Enjoying Food & Drinks at Morrays at the Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa

For some people, a hotel is just a place to rest their heads at night. For others, it’s part of the overall experience. If you’re one of the latter people, Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is the place for you.

Designed to look and feel just like a tropical oasis inside and out, this Mission Beach hotel is situated on prime real estate, with Mission Bay on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Within its gates and walls, guests feel as if they’re in a tropical hideaway.

The Catamaran boasts an authentic Polynesian theme with elegant palm trees rising in its courtyard, tiki torches and lush vegetation surrounding its borders and koi ponds and waterfalls entrancing guests in the middle. Exotic birds conversate with guests who choose to relax poolside or in the hot tub.

The Catamaran Spa is like an oasis within an oasis. Inspired by Asian and South Pacific healing traditions, patrons are privy to innovative treatments they are unlikely unable to find anywhere else. The menu of services includes full-body exfoliation treatments, massage, water therapy and rituals. Many treatments utilize rejuvenating marine and plant-based products, which only adds to the experience.

Local Tips

In addition to relaxation services, the spa also offers an array of beauty treatments. Guests can stop in for hair care, nail services, makeup application and more before a night out in nearby downtown San Diego .

The Catamaran is close to many nearby attractions, including Cabrillo National Monument , SeaWorld San Diego , Old Town San Diego , LEGOLAND California , the Embarcadero , Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo .

However, many guests of the bayside resort find that the nearby outdoor activities hold their interest for the duration of their vacations. The beach and bay offer a wealth of things to do, including paddle boarding , surfing , cruising, biking, touring on Segways, swimming, scuba diving and more.

The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a favorite dining destination of locals and visitors alike, as it offers an inviting atmosphere for all occasions. Oceana Coastal Kitchen, the resort’s signature restaurant, serves up California-inspired cuisine for lunch and dinner while patrons take in the view of the captivating Mission Bay. At Moray’s, diners can let their hair down and relax while enjoying beer, cocktails and a casual meal over tiki lights or around a firepit.

The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is listed as one of our top picks for the Best Family-friendly Hotels in San Diego .

How guest reviews work.

Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.

An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).

We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

Guidelines and standards for Reviews

These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.

Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.

Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa

Explore the exotic side of san diego.

The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a paradisiacal destination located on the shores of Mission Bay and mere steps from San Diego’s famous Pacific Beach. With features including lush tropical gardens and private beach, this Polynesian-themed hotel offers an ideal blend of fun and tranquility all year-round.

Established in 1958, the Catamaran is a paradise featuring more than 1,000 varieties of exotic plants and animals from around the world. Palm trees, bamboo, waterfalls and koi ponds appeal to the senses, while playful parrots delight and intrigue guests.

The Catamaran’s architecture, reminiscent of the traditional Colonial Hawaiian style, boasts accents including totem poles handcrafted in Bali, art pieces such as tapa cloth from Vanuatu and a beautiful front desk constructed of Black Koa wood imported directly from Tahiti.

At the Catamaran, guests are checked into one of 310 guest rooms, studios or suites, each with a private balcony or patio that opens to stunning views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Beach neighborhood and coastline, or the hotel’s lush tropical gardens. All guests are provided a full range of amenities including complimentary Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service.

On-site dining options include Oceana Coastal Kitchen, rated by Zagat as one of San Diego’s most anticipated restaurants and featuring chef-driven surf and turf dishes. Next door to this signature restaurant is Moray’s, where guests can sip on a signature Moray’s Mai Tai, savor a local craft beer and enjoy happy hour specials Monday-Friday. Both venues feature a blend of indoor and patio spaces, the latter lined with tiki torches, fire pit tables and lush palms.

Guests may also choose to grab a bite at Lava Java, the on-site grab and go café, or poolside at the Catamaran’s full bar and grill which serves up barbecue favorites during the spring and summer months. Another standout summer special is the Catamaran’s signature luaus, featuring live performers that guide guests through the cultures of the South Pacific as they enjoy a Hawaiian buffet.

Those who prefer to spend their time on the water can opt for a cruise on the Bahia Belle, a replica of an 1860s-era sternwheeler that tours around Mission Bay. Operating seasonally, the Bahia Belle is a turn-of-the-century, Mississippi-style boat that provides a 45-minute sightseeing cruise of Mission Bay. The 74-foot, 3-story sternwheeler boat offers an observation deck to view the beautiful sites of the 4,200-acre aquatic park.

The Catamaran Spa—the only beachfront spa in San Diego—offers a South Pacific-inspired menu of treatments including massages, facials, body wraps, hydrotherapy treatments and more—carried out with all-natural marine and botanical elements. Additional wellness amenities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, beach cabanas, an open air fitness center, seasonal outdoor yoga classes and more.

Further vacation activities include rental paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks, surfboards, bicycles and Segways. The Catamaran is also located within the beach towns Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, where guests can stroll the boardwalk or the iconic Crystal Pier, play at the beach or experience a variety of cafes and boutiques. The resort is within 10 miles of major San Diego attractions such as SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Downtown’s Gaslamp District and the San Diego International Airport.

Discovering Mission Bay’s Catamaran Resort Hotel

With 27 miles of sandy shoreline and 4,600 acres of aquatic activities from boating and kayaking, paddle boarding and jet skiing, there is plenty of space for fun and social distancing.

The Catamaran Resort Hotel

During the summer the Polynesian-themed resort hosts Sunset Luaus providing guests with authentic Hawaiian tastes, music and entertainment. Every Tuesday and Friday nights, starting on June 24 to September 2, 2022, guests receive a silk lei, a tropical Mai Tai cocktail, all-you-can-eat buffet, dancing and entertainment by local luau group Pride of Polynesia. Learn how to hula, and watch the fiery torch dancers.

Dine at Oceana Coastal Kitchen

Dine at Oceana Coastal Kitchen

The onsite Oceana Coastal Kitchen, helmed by Executive Chef Steven Riemer, embraces fresh California flavors in his sushi options, small bites and fresh grilled proteins that include seafood from the coast of Baja and the Pacific.

The   modern interior dining room is marine-focused in design with an 800-gallon aquarium stocked with colorful   tropical   fish.  O utdoor  dining on the covered  patio offers panoramic   bay views for sipping tropical cocktails, beer and wine with food items.

Bayside bonfire

Other resort activities include the unique Catamaran Bird Show. It’s the only hotel in the area that enlightens and educates guests daily about colorful talking macaws and Rita the cockatoo.

The Catamaran Resort Hotel

Led by bird handler Jackie Kohlman, guests will learn that Rita is an Umbrella Cockatoo, and joined the Catamaran flock in the spring of 2016. She charms guests with her dramatic beauty and intelligence at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Guests who check-in on Fridays and Saturdays receive complimentary snacks and beverage in the lobby at 3 to 5 p.m. Families who pick up a self-guided scavenger hunt at the Concierge Desk can tour the resort to see and learn more about the property. When the scavenger hunt is completed, take it to Lava Java to redeem it for a free cookie.

The resort also offers a classic sternwheeler boat ride onboard the Bahia Belle.  Purchase a ticket to take a 45-minute sightseeing cruise along Mission Bay. The 74-foot, 3-story replica of a turn-of-the-century boat offers an outdoor observation deck for fresh air and photo opportunities. Stand outside under the stars and see the lights sparkle on the bay.

Right outside the resort is 12 miles of flat, scenic bike paths that meander around Mission Bay. Ride by public parks, Belmont Park, a historic amusement park, plus Sea World and a portion of the San Diego River. Fit City Adventures is a lifestyle concierge experience offering e-bike tours.

Stop for a beverage or ice cream

A fun stop while biking is at the Mission Bay Beach Club for iced coffee, fresh juice and ice cream. It’s San Diego’s newest waterfront destination with picnic tables, fire pits, a small vineyard and hopefully a wood-fired pizza oven and full bar soon.

Rates at the Catamaran Resort Hotel start at $300+ a night during the summer months.
