The ultimate man cave? Inside 66m superyacht shadow boat Hodor
- Superyachts
This cavernous support vessel can carry up to five tenders, as well as jet skis, quad bikes, helicopters and submarines
What do you do when your 87m Feadship can’t fit all your toys on board? Build a 66m shadow boat to carry them of course!
Launched this week by Spanish yard Astilleros Armón and designed by multihull specialist Incat Crowther, Hodor is the latest member of a growing global fleet of superyacht support vessels.
The owner clearly has a need for speed, as the pictures above show an impressive array of rapid toys, from a 56ft chase boat packing four Seven Marine outboards on the transom to what looks like a Fountain 32 Thundercat.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg, however, as Hodor can also carry a further three tenders, a submarine and a Eurocopter 145, not to mention jet skis and quad bikes galore.

Hodor is no slouch either, with a top speed of 22.5 knots – enough to overtake the mothership so that the 20-strong crew can set up all the toys in the next secluded anchorage via the four built-in davits.
When the owner and his chums tire of charging around at top speed, they can explore underwater, as Hodor has a fully-equipped dive store, complete with Nitrox and O2 compression facilities.

VESSEL REVIEW | Hodor – Super yacht support vessel and reception space
Spain’s Astilleros Armón has recently launched and delivered the 66-metre composite catamaran shadow vessel Hodor , designed by Incat Crowther.
Shadow vessels are a new breed of workboats. They are designed to blend in amongst super yachts with their smooth lines and gleaming chromed steel, however their purpose is to reduce crew numbers on the main yacht, allowing room for more guests, whilst also offloading other tasks that interfere with the enjoyment of being on a motor yacht.
Hodor offers large amounts of deck and storage space, flexibility, stability, efficiency and capability. The design offers a stable platform for the safe transfer of guests from helicopter to the mothership, via tenders.
Hodor allows for more luxury space to be available onboard the mothership while offering access to toys on demand. It also gives the crew a separate space to manage the operation and maintenance. The vessel can also act as a reception space for visiting guests, transferring them from helicopters to tenders.
Hodor has been completely customised to carry the specific equipment and supplies to support and enhance the owner’s mothership capabilities. The design uses the robust engineering of hulls proven in offshore platform service, such as the Seacor “Crewzer”-class and Incat Crowther’s 70-metre fast crewboat class. The hull incorporates a reverse bow, a deadweight capacity of 240 tonnes and a low propeller draught of 3.1 metres.
The platform accommodates an astounding number of toys, facilities and personnel. This includes five tenders (the largest being 17 metres in length), jet skis, quad bikes, a submarine garage, a helipad, a large complement of crew, staff and support equipment.
The tenders and submarine are flexibly located and can be launched from the upper and main decks. On the upper deck via the two large knuckle boom cranes, and on the main deck via twin beam cranes. A primary feature of the vessel is the the aft lifting platform for the 17-metre chase boat. A portable davit on the fore deck facilitates the launch and recovery of the vessels ROV and can also be used for additional jet ski storage.
The submarine garage is housed in the centre of Hodor . The launching system for this uses air casters to transfer it from the garage to the beam cranes for launching.
Incat Crowther has a number of vessels with fast launch and recovery systems – these existing proven systems were scaled up to the suitable size to allow the chase boat to be launched easily and quickly between the catamaran hulls.
The helipad is a fully-certified and CAP437 compliant for helicopters of six tonnes and up to D-value of 16 metres including the Eurocopter EC145. A large reception room, finished to a yacht standard, sits forward of the helipad, allowing guests to be transferred in comfort between helicopters and tenders.
Incat Crowther found that the catamaran platform lent itself well for helicopter support operations given the increased deck area, in particular the wide beam, and good level of stability.
The port hull shell door, provided for guest access is finished to a yacht standard and directly connected to the guest lounge via a guest staircase. The starboard hull shell door is reserved for crew operations. There is also water access via two stern platforms, should weather conditions require stern boarding.
Dive equipment is fully integrated with compressors, nitrox and oxygen facilities, as well as a hospital with decompression chamber.
Specialised spaces are dedicated for fresh and frozen food storage, additional storage for the mother vessel, waste treatment and general and spares stores.
Propulsion is provided by two main engines, giving a max speed of 22.5 knots, or long-range cruising at 14 knots up to 5,500 nautical miles. The catamaran platform allows fuel savings of around 40 per cent, affording the full vessel range with only 160,000 litres of diesel fuel. The vessel’s tankage supplies toys and vehicles with jet fuel, petrol and diesel from dedicated bunker stations.
A complement of 20 crew and staff are comfortably accommodated in a mix of double and twin ILO-compliant staterooms, each with ensuite bathrooms.
The wheelhouse is situated with excellent visibility. Access to electronics systems is simplified with incorporation of a walk-around main helm console and a dedicated MEC.
Fitted with an exhaust cleaning SCR system for IMO Tier 3 and EPA Tier 4 compliance, greenhouse gas emissions are significantly reduced, allowing the design to be more environmentally friendly.
The inherent stability of the catamaran does not require gyro or roll stabilisers whilst at rest. When underway, the vessel pitching motions are reduced by twin Humphree active interceptors on the stern.
A twin anchoring system is provided, which, combined with the widely spaced twin hulls, provides reduced motions whilst at anchor.

Oliver Design , a Spanish firm specialising in naval design and architecture has just completed interior outfitting on the “ Hodor ”, a spectacular 66‑metre catamaran design “Shadow Boat” by Incat Crowther from Australia and built at the Armon shipyards in Burela-Lugo ( Spain ), with Project Management/Technical Consult by Robert Smith of YCTS, Ltd . This is Oliver Design ‘s first Interior design for a shadow boat, a highly sophisticated new class of vessels, designed to act as support ships for super-yachts. The “ Hodor ” will service one of the world’s most exclusive private luxury yachts, of which details have not been revealed.

Oliver Design ‘s contribution to the project involved designing the interiors and outfitting all living spaces on board the “ Hodor ”, including both the stylish guest areas and quarters for the ship’s twenty crewmembers . The firm also carried out the meticulous work of insulating the ship’s technical areas , including the engine room.
Owner´s Lounge ©Clint Jenkins photography.
For the most luxurious areas, designed by the specialized firm Halberg Design , Oliver Design provided a scale replica , competing with leading companies in this sector to produce a quality product that would meet the highest standards requested by the client. The replica was successful and OD was granted with the contract for the guest areas interiors .
The crew’s quarters include two officers’ cabins and seven other twin cabins , as well as a galley , lounge and mess hall , laundry , workshops and a medical centre . Design & outfitting includes mineral-wool insulation, primary deck coverings, sandwich bulkheads, Oak and teak furniture, vinyl, carpeted and teak floors, electrically operated curtains and decorative panelling with sculpted Corian.

The interior outfitting work took 10 months and over 20,000 person hours to complete, with up to 30 operators working on site at peak periods.

The “ Hodor ” is a three-deck 66‑metre catamaran with an aluminium hull and superstructure . With a 14‑metre beam , it can reach a cruising speed of 25 knots . It is the first shadow boat to be built in Spain. It boasts a helicopter and heliport , mini-submarine , sophisticated diving equipment with a hyperbaric decompression chamber, an 18‑metre tender and several smaller vessels, including motor boats , jet-skis and ATV vehicles .

The ship marks Armon Shipyards and Oliver Design ‘s first incursion into an exciting new market sector , and the two firms are already partnering on the design of a second Cat Shadow Boat utilizing strategic partnerships with Incat Crowther and YCTS, Ltd.

A new and highly sophisticated range of vessel
The “ Hodor ” joins a highly sophisticated new range of vessels , called “ shadow boats “, built to provide support for luxury yachts . Like the auxiliary vessels used by naval fleets to transport fuel, food, ammunition, medicine and spare parts, shadow boats are tasked with providing the most complete experience to passengers on the yacht.
Shadow boats make it possible to complement the usual levels of luxury on the mother ship with exciting extras such as underwater exploration , helicopter trips and outings in a whole range of floating devices —from humble canoes to powerful water-skis, motor boats and even ATV vehicles. In this way, the shadow boat can act as a sort of floating toybox .
ATV y Quads ©Clint Jenkins photography.
The first examplesv of this new breed of boat were developed in the 1990s , but early versions were more like unattractive floating warehouses. In recent years, however the trend has been to create a new type of mega-yacht , rivalling the mother ship in luxuryv and aesthetic appeal . There are currently only about twenty units in servicev around the world, but the numbers are growing and in the future, it is expected that most super yachts will boast their own support vessel. The “ Hodor ” is the first significant launch of a Shadow Boat in the world using a Catamaran hull (“Shadow Cat”), which gives her a much greater volume. As well as housing a wide range of extra artefacts and means of transport, shadow boats also offer other benefits : they can provide space for fuel supplies , a repair workshop , waste storage and additional security .

Both hulls have a lower deck swim platform leading to the main deck, where a side passageway flows down both sides and the central area is semi-open for the launch and retrieval of water toys and land-based motorised vehicles.
Above, the upper deck exterior is slightly lower that the upper deck interiors, and there is plenty of space for storing water toys amidships. The stern section has a certified octagonal helipad with a forward reception area for fast, efficient and safe guest transfers. Both the helicopter and the water toys can draw from the fuel supply aboard S/Y HODOR to refill their own tanks.
On the lower decks, the port hull shell door opens up to reveal a beach club that connects directly to the main guest lounge via a staircase. The starboard hull shell door is reserved for crew operations.
The interior styling has a fresh and contemporary feel throughout, with white-painted walls and wooden panelling complemented by broad windows and eye-catching pops of colour in ochre and blue. The main salon is an excellent example of this laid-back styling, where guests will find a square 'formal' dining table to seat eight guests and a massive widescreen TV taking up the space on the nearby wall. A corner sofa curves away from the dining area and follows the wall to provide a comfortable open area and cosy nook for relaxing together or alone. Superyacht with 66-metre support yacht spotted off Victoria
A pair of multimillion-dollar yachts sailed past Victoria on Monday, both owned by billionaire brothers who made the bulk of their fortunes as owners of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
The 87-metre yacht Lonian was trailed by its 66-metre support yacht Hodor, described by Boat International magazine as "the world's largest floating toy box."
While the Lonian can accommodate 12 guests, 27 crew and a helicopter of its own, the catamaran-style support ship acts as a kind of floating garage, carrying speedboats, jet skis, motorcycles and ATVs.
"The idea was to get all the clutter off the mothership and on board a dedicated vessel," the Hodor's first officer told the magazine last year.
"There was no need to restrict the quantity of toys we put on board. The owner just let us go ahead and fill it with cool stuff."
The Hodor's designer, Incat Crowther, says the support ship "accommodates an astounding number of toys, facilities and personnel," which includes a submarine garage and a scuba-diving platform complete with onboard air compressors and "a hospital with decompression chamber."
According to financial transparency website OpenCorporates , the vessels are owned by a pair of holding companies controlled by Fertitta Enterprises, the family company of Lorenzo Fertitta and brother Frank Fertitta III.
According to Forbes magazine, the casino-magnate brothers bought the UFC for US$2 million in 2001 and sold it in 2016 for US$4 billion, while retaining stakes in the company which sold in 2017 at a US$5-billion valuation.
Vessel-tracking website marinetraffic.com indicates the yachts were en route to Vancouver from Seattle.

The Need for Speed: Exploring the World’s Fastest Superyachts
In the realm of luxury yachts, where luxury knows no bounds, there exists a class of vessels that stands apart – vessels that blend luxurious living with exhilarating speed. Welcome to our exploration of “The Need for Speed: Exploring the World’s Fastest Superyachts.” In this exhilarating journey across the high seas, we unveil the marvels of modern engineering and design, showcasing a selected group of superyachts that defy convention with their remarkable velocity. From cutting-edge propulsion systems to breathtaking top speeds, join us as we delve into the world of high-performance yachting, where luxury knows how to pick up the pace.
Cutting-Edge Propulsion Technologies in World’s Fastest Superyachts
Conventional diesel engines.
Many superyachts, even the fastest ones, are powered by conventional diesel engines. These engines typically run on marine-grade diesel fuel. They use a system of pistons and crankshafts to convert the energy from diesel combustion into mechanical power, which turns the yacht’s propellers. These engines are reliable and fuel-efficient, providing the necessary power for cruising.
Gas Turbine Engines
Some high-performance yachts, especially military and custom-built vessels, use gas turbine engines. These engines are known for their exceptional power-to-weight ratio. They have the ability to provide a high amount of thrust, which results in impressive speeds. Gas turbine engines are often used in combination with other propulsion systems or in hybrid setups for improved efficiency.
Hybrid Propulsion Systems in Fastest Superyachts
In recent years, there has been a trend towards hybrid propulsion systems. They combine traditional diesel engines with electric motors and batteries. These systems offer greater flexibility, allowing yachts to operate in all-electric mode for silent and emission-free cruising at lower speeds, and then switch to diesel power for high-speed operation. Hybrid systems are more environmentally friendly and can improve fuel efficiency.
Waterjet propulsion is a technology commonly used in high-speed yachts. Waterjets draw water into the yacht and expel it at high velocity through a nozzle at the stern. This system provides excellent maneuverability, shallow draft capabilities, and reduced vibration, making it suitable for fast and agile yachts.
Pod propulsion systems, such as those manufactured by companies like Volvo Penta and Caterpillar, involve the use of pods (outdrive units) that are mounted below the yacht’s hull. These pods can rotate, providing thrust in various directions, resulting in increased maneuverability and efficiency. They are often used in combination with diesel engines for both power and control.
Advanced Hull Designs
Beyond propulsion systems, the hull design of a yacht plays a crucial role in achieving high speeds. Yachts with planing hulls are designed to lift out of the water at higher speeds, reducing hydrodynamic drag and allowing for increased velocity.
Crafting the Perfect Propulsion Strategy for Fastest Superyachts
The selection of a propulsion system for a superyacht is a multifaceted decision that hinges on several critical factors, including the vessel’s size, intended purpose, and the preferences of its owner. Each propulsion method comes with its unique set of advantages and trade-offs, making it crucial to tailor the choice to suit the yacht’s specific requirements. Moreover, it’s not uncommon to witness a synergy of multiple propulsion systems within a single yacht, a testament to the industry’s dedication to optimizing both performance and efficiency. The pursuit of the perfect balance between speed, range, maneuverability, and environmental impact underscores the meticulous craftsmanship and innovation inherent in the design and engineering of these high-speed marvels.

Koru and Abeona
The 75-metre Abeona marks the largest support vessel ever built by Damen Yachting . Fitting, as the custom project accompanies Oceanco 's flagship (and world's largest sailing yacht), the 125.8-metre Koru . Abeona was launched in October 2023 at Vlissingen, the Netherlands, sporting a grey hull and orange bootstripe designed entirely in-house. Key numbers include a 12.6-metre beam and volume of 1,900GT. She has the capacity to accommodate 45 people and features a helicopter hangar, a vast array of marine gear and additional tenders and toys.
More about this yacht
Gene machine and gene chaser.
Originally launched by Damen Yachting as Blue Ocean , this 55-metre support vessel has been transformed into Gene Chaser to accompany the Amels 180 superyacht Gene Machine . The yacht is being used as a working research laboratory to support the scientific research of owner Dr Jonathan Rothberg . The main saloon has been converted into a working wet and dry laboratory, while other interior areas are used for conferences and other educational purposes. Gene Chaser 's sleeping quarters can accommodate a total of eight visiting researchers or experts, while the crew quarters allow for a crew of seven and four full-time scientists.
Lonian and Hodor
Dubbed "the world's largest floating toy box" , the 66-metre Hodor is the first hull in Incat Crowther 's ShadowCat range and boasts enough deck space to house every toy imaginable. Among Hodor ’s cargo is a 7.3-metre Novurania catamaran RIB, a nine-metre Metal Shark landing craft and an insane 388 Skater race boat, capable of a genuine 240km/h. Toys and tenders are launched from two knuckle boom cranes, while a submarine garage offers a launch and recovery system for a submarine. Her mothership is the ultra-private 87-metre Lonian , delivered by Feadship in 2018.
Gigi and Axis
The 55.3-metre Axis belongs to serial superyacht owner Carl Allen, who first saw her at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in 2016. It was to be the perfect vessel to accompany his 49.9-metre Westport mothership Gigi around the world. Axis carries a Triton sub, an Icon A5 aeroplane, several tenders, Jet Skis and a complete dive shop. She also holds 60,000 gallons of fuel and her watermaker produces 20,000 gallons of fresh water daily. A Viking 52 Frigate completes the Allen Exploration fleet.
White Rabbit and Charley
Charley was launched in 2017 by Echo Yachts to serve as the shadow boat for the Australian shipyard's 84-metre trimaran White Rabbit . Measuring 51 metres in length, this catamaran support vessel has ample space to entertain guests with her sheltered observation deck and piano lounge. However, it is her tender storage capacity that is the most notable feature, as Charley can carry a fleet of up to ten watercraft, including five tenders, four Jet Skis and a hovercraft. Other key features include a dive store, decompression chamber and sonar system for searching out the best wreck dives.
Moonrise and Nebula
Featuring architecture by Incat Crowther , the 68.2-metre support yacht Nebula joined her ShadowCat siblings Hodor and Wayfinder on the water in 2022. Her primary mission is to support her 99.9-metre mothership Moonrise in helicopter operations, and she fits the bill with a wide enough beam to host a full-size hangar. It is the largest hangar found on any private vessel and can accommodate a twin-engine helicopter without it having to fold its rotor blades.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital
There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.
How to find the right boat?
There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.
Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.
This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.
Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such option offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).
If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.
Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.
How to buy tickets?
Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.
“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!” wrote (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.
Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.
Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.
Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.
Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as this offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.
This website (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other website sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.
Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.
“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.
There are two main boarding piers in the city center: Hotel Ukraine and Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.
Where to sit onboard?
Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.
The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.
Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.
There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
