Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club is a fully-volunteer club located on the foreshore of McMillan Straits and Lake Victoria, Paynesville in East Gippsland. The club was founded in 1937 and has been committed to sailing for over 85 years. The facility has grown somewhat since those early days and now boasts to be one of the most successful family sailing clubs in Victoria. Our facilities include a fully-licenced bar, club rooms with lake views, launching area with ramp, crane, and mooring jetties. The Club has wet berth, hardstand and undercover boat storage.

Gippsland Lakes is one of the most active sailing clubs in country Victoria, whereby we are operational all-year round. Over and above our Sunday full fleet cut and thrust seasonal sailing between October and May the club also runs a winter series on Saturdays commencing 1300 hours on 1 day a month. For those interested in competitive stern-chaser sailing, GLYC runs an extremely successful Twilight Series held each Tuesday evening during daylight saving hours, followed by a social meal at the club (Open to all divisions). A full year schedule of sailing is available with an Ancient Mariners Series. This sailing occurs during the week every Thursday or Friday depending on wind strengths and weather with 1300 hours start (Open to trailable and keel boats) . All visitors are welcome but in order to sail with us must be members of a yacht club, or register for a sail pass (which can be obtained for no cost from the GLYC Website) and have proof of insurance if intending to race their own yacht.

During the summer months we also host a number of regattas on behalf of class associations and/or Yachting Victoria, our peak governing body. These regattas/competitions bring in funds and a wealth of knowledge and competition to the Club that otherwise could be lost. Our major annual regatta continues to be the Easter Regatta, held over the three days of Easter and has been well supported by both club and non-Club members for over 50 years.

The classes raced include Flying Fifteens, Mosquitos, Sabres, Castle 650s, Sonata 6/7s, Timpenny 770s, and a mixed fleet of dinghies, trailer-sailors and keelboats including Etchells.

GLYC is also an accredited Discover Sailing Centre, offering sail programs for all backgrounds, ages, and abilities:

• Sailing school: encouraging first time sailors, developing our novice fleet and a youth development pathway.
• Tackers: run in the school holidays, providing learn to sailing opportunities for both kids and adults.
• Sailability: held each Wednesday in terms 4 and 1, for local primary and special schools, centres for people with disabilities and community support programs
• Adult and Teen programs
• Powerboat handling
• School Sailing

We offer venue hire whereby the main hall and rooms can be hired for Functions, Weddings, Community Meetings, Seminars, Corporate Events ... all with a brand new state-of-the art projector and interactive white board system.

Yacht and Motor Cruiser Charter

Riviera Nautic’s charter fleet is the largest in Victoria and offers a diverse range of beautifully maintained yachts and motor cruisers. You are not required to hold a boat operator’s licence or even have previous boating experience to hire a yacht, motor cruiser, or dayboat from Riviera Nautic. A thorough briefing from our friendly staff will get you underway. The one exception is our high speed boat, you’ll need a boat licence for this one.

Mooring Licences and Temporary Mooring

Please be advised that there are currently no moorings available at the Port of Sale. Any future vacancies will be advertised, or the availability status updated on this website.

Transfer of Mooring

If you have a mooring permit, and have sold your vessel and wish to transfer the permit across to a new owner please complete a Port of Sale Mooring Permit Transfer Application Form .

This form is to be printed, completed, signed and returned to the Wellington Shire Council Sale Service Centre for processing and payment.

Transfer of Mooring Fee: $52.00 (Inc. GST).

Swing Bridge

The National Trust classified Swing Bridge is located at the junction of the Thomson and Latrobe Rivers. It is the oldest surviving swing bridge in Australia, being constructed from 1880-1883, and is regarded as one of the engineering wonders of Gippsland.

As the name suggests, the bridge was designed to swing open to allow shipping to and from the Port of Sale. The bridge, built of cast iron cylinders and fittings and wrought iron trusses is 61m long, with a central swing span of almost 46m.

The bridge still opens today, and is a wonderful experience to see. The scheduled opening times are as follows:

Saturday/Sunday: Between 3.00pm and 4.00pm

Second Wednesday of every month: Between 11.00am and 12noon

Requests for openings outside scheduled times can be met subject to payment and operator availability. The current fee is $469.00 (Inc. GST).

Requests for special openings must be made a minimum of 7 days prior to required opening time and should be directed to Wellington Shire Council.

Originally starting out as VicSail Melbourne, the business is one of the longest established yacht and power boat brokers in Australia. However around 2012, the name was changed to 38 South Boat Sales which is more reflective of the latitude that is synonymous with the heart of boating in Victoria and was also taken over by former multiple Moth World Champion and twice ISAF World Sailor of the Year finalist Rohan Veal.

Since then the business has grown substantially now covering marinas such as Sandringham, Williamstown, Martha Cove, Blairgowrie, Patterson Lakes, St Kilda, Hastings, Brighton, Geelong, Docklands, North Haven, Paynesville and Metung. But due to interests in the power catamaran market, we started up new operations in Brisbane in 2021, to sell and commission our Aventura Catamarans into Queensland.

Feel free to ask around and you will quickly find that this level of service, experience and qualifications is unprecedented. We are also members of the BIA (Victoria) and are one of the few boat brokers in Melbourne that have a Second Hand Dealers licence.

We are also very environmentally conscious, with our Chelsea Heights office fitted with a 6Kw optimised solar panel system leaving an almost neutral CO2 footprint, we pay to recycle all of our plastic, paper and packaging materials, as well as collecting aluminum cans and donating them to help raise money for kids with cancer.

We know boats, we own boats, we race boats and we only offer honest advice to customers and boat owners.
