Step On-Board Rafael Nadal’s Sunreef Yacht, Great White

By George Bains

Take a tour of Rafael Nadal’s newly launched 80 Sunreef Power as new images are released of the tennis star and his catamaran yacht.

Delivered in June 2020 , the 80 Sunreef Power superyacht was commissioned by the Spanish icon to provide a luxury basis for sailing holidays spent with family and friends. Speaking at the handover last month, Sunreef Yachts President Francis Lapp said that it was “an unforgettable event for our shipyard to hand over the yacht to such an amazing person and athlete as Rafael Nadal .” Nadal is an experienced boater with a passion for the ocean, which has been reflected in the onboard liveability of this Sunreef Yacht.

Great White, as she has been christened by Nadal, features a custom design which maximises guest space both throughout the interior and exterior, providing plenty of comfort for up to 8 guests. Her four-cabin layout includes a spacious Owner’s suite in the starboard hull with an opening side balcony, sofa, walk-in dresser and a flip-down ceiling TV above the double bed. All guest cabins are luxuriously furnished and complete with en-suite bathrooms.

Nadal’s dream of a vessel fit for entertainment has been realised, with Great White being blessed with generous living space including a bright and spacious saloon with oversized-lounging sofas and a dining facility to the bow. Two back-to-back 77” televisions are perfect for evening movies with the family, or for re-watching some of Nadal’s famous Grand Slam victories.

The stern cockpit offers outstanding alfresco dining space, which is well-protected from the sun and wind and is even fitted with a weatherproof TV. Great White’s aft garage is well stocked for water-borne adventures, with a large jet-ski among the water toys as well as space for a tender.

Launched last month at the Sunreef Yachts shipyard in Gdansk – Poland, the 80 Sunreef Power catamaran was officially handed over to her owner – Rafael Nadal in his hometown in Mallorca, last week.

This is an unforgettable event for our shipyard to hand over the yacht to such an amazing person and athlete as Rafael Nadal. My team in Gdańsk made every effort to create the yacht Rafa and his wife Maria dreamed of. I am convinced that they will have a great time with their friends and family on board.

Francis Lapp – President and Founder of Sunreef Yachts

Inside Rafael Nadal's 'Great White' Yacht

By: Scott Way

Sunreef 80 Power Rafael Nadal Great White

Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal has a new yacht and, to put it mildly, it's a real looker. Not just because it's from renowned builder Sunreef yachts, but because it's truly one of a kind. The Polish shipyard added an insane list of custom features in accordance with the wishes of Nadal and his wife Maria, both of whom were actively involved in the build process (they're also ambassadors for Sunreef as a result).

Some of those specialty features include Rafa's custom Nike logo on the big screen tv mounts in the salon (and there are three massive 77" in tv's, one of which is somehow waterproof), a dropdown terrace in the master suite that creates a water-level lookout at the foot of the king size bed, and a custom Heineken beer tap on the flybridge. The 'garage' is also accessible directly underneath the rear salon, where an electronic lift pulls back the stern lounge to reveal a jet ski, a SEABOB, and a surf foil. While Great White is by no means a small yacht, at 80 feet long it's shocking that it manages to pack 4,000 square feet of comfortable living space. She has a top speed of 24 knots (27 mph), which a cruising speed of 14 knots (16 mph).

Former F1 champ Nico Rosberg recently took a tour around Great White, and it's a great look at a masterfully built boat. Nadal is also a truly interesting and humble guy, and there are some good lessons for everyone.

Nadal mentions that the flybridge was recently damaged in a thunderstorm (of which he takes responsibility for encouraging the captain to take him out in bad weather), and I wish we could get the backstory on that. The tour doesn't seem to include the entire flybridge, so something is afoot there.

As for who has the best celebrity yacht, there may be some footitus going on. Tom Brady recently went up in size to a Wajer 77 , and Nadal matched the length of Michael Jordan's 80-foot Viking sportfishing yacht Catch 23 . Length doesn't always tell the full story, though. NBA champ Klay Thompson rides around in a measly 37-foot fishing boat, but it's an Axopar 37 Cabin , so he gets some slack. And Conor McGregor's tiny 63-foot boat doesn't match up with the big boys either, but it's literally a Lamborghini boat , so he gets a pass. If we are judging length (and let's be honest, some of us will), Tony Parker reigns supreme with a 115-foot expedition yacht .

Check out Nadal and Rosberg exploring Great White in the video below:

80 Sunreef Power - discovery of Great White, Rafael Nadal's catamaran motoryacht

July 21 2020

Written by Yachting Art English Edition

80 Sunreef Power - discovery of Great White, Rafael Nadal's catamaran motoryacht

The tennis world champion has a passion for beautiful motoryachts. Today, he shows us, in pictures, his brand new acquisition, an 80 Sunreef Power, a luxury motoryacht catamaran, an exceptional unit that has enabled the Polish shipyard to enter the super yacht market on the same level.

80 Sunreef Power - discovery of Great White, Rafael Nadal's catamaran motoryacht

If there is one development that everyone in the yachting world is watching with great attention, it is the current transfer of part of the clientele from monohull yachts from 100 to 200 feet to catamaran motoryachts from 70 to 120 feet.

This strong trend can easily be explained by a desire on the part of owners for greater privacy on board - less crew - for an equivalent living area and larger volumes.

In fact, demand is exploding in this sector, which reflects the soundness of the strategy of the Polish shipyard Sunreef Yachts, the world leader in semi-custom luxury catamarans, whose move upmarket in recent years is currently enabling it to take full advantage of this strong wave.

Among the latest units delivered by Sunreef, ActuNautique invites you to discover today, the motoryacht delivered a few weeks ago to Rafael Nadal, a unit which is much talked about in the yachting world.

Rafael Nadal, a yachting enthusiast

An experienced sailor, Rafael Nadal has been passionate about yachting since childhood and never misses an opportunity to go out to sea with his friends and family. Having owned monohull yachts until now, he decided to have a custom catamaran built for him after visiting and chartering Sunreef Yachts catamarans in the past.

Seduced by both the design and the living space of the 80 Sunreef Power, he opted for the latest model from the shipyard and took delivery of Great White last month.

Great White, Rafael Nadal's 80 Sunreef Power can accommodate up to 8 guests thanks to its comfortable 4-cabin layout. The starboard hull houses the owner's suite, one of the guest cabins and the crew quarters.

The spacious master suite features a walk-in wardrobe, sofa, overhead fold-out TV and a private sea view balcony. The port hull accommodates two other guest cabins and the catamaran's galley.

Great White's bright saloon offers great comfort with its two large sofas next to the entrance to the aft cockpit, a dining area for 8 people at the bow and two 77" TVs installed back to back. An additional lounge area with sofa is located next to the entrance to the forward sundeck.

The large aft cockpit of the catamaran offers an exceptional open-air dining area, well protected from the sun and sheltered from the wind. Under the large sofa, the aft garage of Great White accommodates a three-seater jet-ski and a selection of nautical toys as well as a refuelling station. A hydraulic platform has been installed to carry the yacht's tender and provide additional space for sunbathing on the water's edge.

The flybridge is the privileged relaxation area where guests enjoy an outdoor lounge equipped with solariums and a bar.

Equipped with two 1200 HP engines, the 80 Sunreef Power Great White expects a top speed of 23 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots.

Podcast Exclusive: Tennis Superstar Rafael Nadal On His New Superyacht

BOAT International 's brand new podcast, BOAT Briefing , launched this week and features an exclusive interview with tennis superstar Rafael Nadal , who spoke to the team from on board his new Sunreef superyacht.

The 19-time Grand Slam champion revealed in the interview how being on his boat was the perfect counterweight to the stress of the pro tour.

“The pressure of competing every single day is high, you can’t hide that,” he said. “When I come back home, I have the chance to go out and spend maybe just one day away from everything without thinking about tennis, just diving and spending the night on board.”

Even this short time away from shore allows Nadal to return to training “with energy and peace”.

“It gives me positive vibes,” he said. “When I am on the ocean, I normally come back with positive energy.”

You can listen to the full interview now through Apple podcasts or on Spotify .

BOAT Briefing is a new podcast that will bring listeners a weekly dose of news and views about the superyacht industry, as well as an exclusive interview each week.

For the first episode, editor-in-chief Stewart Campbell was joined by deputy editor Caroline White and features director Charlotte Hogarth-Jones to discuss everything from the latest America's Cup spying scandal to some of the most impressive new yachts hitting the water.

"We're excited to launch this new podcast, which gives us an opportunity to talk about the world of superyachts in an entirely new way," said Campbell. "To get Rafael Nadal as our first interview was a major coup, and I'd encourage everyone to who loves yachting to listen and subscribe – there is lots more to come."

Rafael Nadal: 12,000 fans, an inside-out forehand, and a dream in Madrid

MADRID, SPAIN - APRIL 27: Rafael Nadal of Spain celebrates victory against Alex de Minaur of Australia in the Men's Singles Round of 64 match during Day Five of the Mutua Madrid Open at La Caja Magica on April 27, 2024 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)

This is why it’s so hard to quit and so easy to dream.

When Rafael Nadal’s tennis career ends, there is absolutely nothing he will experience that compares to battling on an acre of red clay, in front of more than 12,000 Spanish loyalists (and Zinedine Zidane) who are hanging on his every shot.

And then comes the moment when, after an hour-and-a-quarter, that crucial first set down to its pivotal moment, he sees the ball coming to his backhand side with just enough float.

He knows he can do the thing he has always done.

He can take those few quick stutter steps and shift his hips and hunt that forehand that will seal this first-set tiebreak, on his fifth chance to get the lead he so desperately wants.

And he knows, as soon as he takes that inside-out rip, that it is done. He knows that ball is not coming back. Then he’s down in a crouch, punching at the air below his knees three, four, five times.

The screams of the crowd are rattling the metal roof of the Caja Magica, basically his country’s national stadium. It’s on and he can feel it: the rush of competition that he and those 12,000 want to feel just one more time, and then one more, and one more, because they know that when it’s gone, it’s never coming back.

inside rafael nadal yacht

A week ago, in Barcelona, Nadal basically called it a day after losing the first set to Alex de Minaur , the increasingly powerful Australian roadrunner who reached the top 10 earlier this year.

On Saturday in the Spanish capital, Nadal came to play all evening against De Minaur, if that was what it would take.

After a little more than two hours, he had the sort of win he has been working for since undergoing surgery on his left hip nearly a year ago and suffering another injury in that area in January on his first comeback attempt.

He had a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 triumph over a top player on his beloved red clay. He had one more step on his journey to Paris next month, to try to win the French Open for a 15th time — or at least to feel what he felt on Saturday in the place that made him who he is.

It was “a great test,” Nadal said. “Let’s see how I recover.”

Nadal has said repeatedly that he will only play in Paris if he can compete the way he always has . Through a win and a loss in Barcelona, and his opening-round beatdown of a 16-year-old wildcard entrant named Darwin Blanch on Thursday in Madrid, Nadal said his injury-riddled body was not where it needed to be.

Ghosts of clay courts past: Rafael Nadal's comeback is really about his legacy

Where does it need to be? Nadal wants to be able to dream, not just of getting a nice sendoff in the tournament and the stadium that has meant everything to him during his career. He wants to walk onto the court thinking anything is possible — that his body will be able to withstand somewhere between 21 and 35 sets of the most gruelling kind of tennis over 14 days.

“It’s not about winning or losing, it’s about going on the court with the feeling that I can fight,” he said after his emotional win on Saturday.

“If I can’t go on court and dream, even if it is the minimum, minimum percentage, for me it doesn’t make sense. I prefer all the memories that I have.”

This Saturday in Madrid gave him a little more hope that at some point in the next three weeks he is going to step onto a court knowing that when he pushes his foot down on the gas pedal, he will feel his engine rev just as he wants it to, enough to make him think some crazy thought about getting across a finish line.

inside rafael nadal yacht

Make no mistake: Nadal remains a shadow of what he was at the peak of his powers. Soreness in the middle of his body has reduced him basically to hitting two second serves.

His feet barely leave the ground when he serves. In men’s tennis, getting so-called “free points” — aces and service winners — or inducing service returns that come back for an easy put-away (“plus-one” points) are the fruit that every player collects in bunches at some point in a match.

Nadal basically gets none of these now.

That means his serve is little more than a rally starter. It worked just enough against a sub-par De Minaur.

The Australian was tight at the beginning, knowing he was taking on Nadal and 12,000 of his closest friends. He could sense early on that this was a different version of Nadal than the one he faced in Barcelona. In the second game, Nadal ripped a forehand down the line to get his first chance to break De Minaur’s serve, then induced an error to take an early lead.

There was also an early confrontation with the chair umpire when Nadal was certain he had challenged a call, but the umpire ruled he had not raised his hand in time and instead played the shot. Nadal, who almost never takes on an official, railed at the umpire for more than a minute.

Very quickly, this match felt like far more than a dry run or a ceremonial sendoff in what could have been Nadal’s last competitive tour match in his country.

He had come to win.

“His level lifted,” De Minaur said of Nadal a few minutes after the end when he still seemed a bit dazed from enduring this unique crucible for the second consecutive week. “He was looking quite good out there if I may say.”

All things considered, he was.

Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and the hunt for a graceful and glorious exit

inside rafael nadal yacht

A deep forehand-backhand combination to opposite corners brought the opportunity for him to rear back on his heel and crank an overhead, the kind of vintage Nadal pattern that will get the brains of the Rafa-faithful dancing with visions of a deep run in Paris. No longer able to hunt as many forehands, he ripped backhands across the court with some of his old ferocity instead.

There were points where he hit every kind of forehand and backhand, flat and sliced and lobbed, twirling with topspin, using every inch of the court and playing with the kind of variety he is going to need to compete at this level. When he needed to, he feathered the ball around the front of the court on angles that tested the sturdiness of De Minaur’s ankles.

Two points away from the win, Nadal tore into a backhand that fired past De Minaur as he moved onto the court. The ball had barely left Nadal’s racket when he let out a primal roar, as though he was releasing nearly a year-and-a-half of hurt, struggle and frustration in one moment.

What happens now?

Nadal’s body has proven so brittle in recent years that he is always a bad step away from the end, but anyone who watched him Saturday, or catches the highlights, or hears those roars and sees those fist pumps, now knows what is possible, at least for one afternoon in the Spanish capital, in a best-of-three match.

The next test is what happens when he wakes up in the morning, how his body feels after pushing it in a way he hasn’t in nearly two years by his estimation. Assuming that goes well, he will play again on Monday against a journeyman from Argentina named Pedro Cachin, who knows his way around a clay court, like most of his countrymen. Another test.

“It’s not about playing better, playing worse,” he said. “It’s about going on court with real hope. Then anything can happen.”

Whatever does happen, he will always have this Saturday afternoon in Madrid, in a stadium called the Magic Box.

It will also be equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and robotics. Madrid farewell for king of clay: Rafael Nadal bids for one last miracle

As the end of his career draws ever closer, the ailing 14-time French Open champion faces a race against time to find form

T owards the end of last week, before most of the 192 players in the Madrid Open main draw singles had even touched down in the Spanish capital, Rafael Nadal was already pounding balls on the courts of the Caja Mágica in preparation for the coming tournament.

The four-times champion’s early arrival made sense. He is, after all, in a race against time to find at least a semblance of form before it’s too late. Not only is he tasked with somehow finding his feet after so many injuries, but this is it. Nadal may fast be approaching his endgame and he will likely compete at an ATP tournament on home soil for the final time in Madrid over the next two weeks. There will be no do-overs.

This season had started with far greater hopes for Nadal, who had returned to competition in the first week of the year after an 11 month layoff due to a hip injury. Even though he suggested that 2024 could well be his final season, the prospect of him returning healthy and in a rich vein of form was irresistible, a sentiment only bolstered by the way he rolled through his first two matches in Brisbane with ease.

But in his third match back, Nadal lost a brutal three hour, 24 minute match against Jordan Thompson, which included three squandered match points, and he suffered another hip injury. It has proven to a bitter reminder of how badly his body is struggling to deal with the demands of professional tennis after over two decades of play. Nadal missed another three months before returning last week in Barcelona, where he lost in the second round .

Having already withdrawn from Monte Carlo, it is clear that Nadal had run out of time for his preparations and he had to simply make do with what he had. Not only did he have minimal training hours behind him, but he has now had to adapt some of his strokes due to his physical ailments.

His serve is currently the most glaring weakness due to his lingering hip issues, which he has been careful not to aggravate. During most of the buildup to Barcelona, Nadal did not serve during his training sessions. He is now serving with minimal body rotation and the delivery is almost entirely driven by his arm.

Rafael Nadal serves

“I haven’t been able to serve for a few months and, although I’m very excited, I’m not going to do things that are out of logic and serve like a crazy person. I have to serve with the caution that the moment dictates to me,” he said.

In his first round match there, Nadal blew away the young Italian Flavio Cobolli in straight sets but then against Alex de Minaur, the Australian’s ability to make it physical was fatal. After a competitive opening set, the Spaniard faded quickly, losing 7-5, 6-1. He later noted the task ahead as he tries to build his form.

“It wasn’t today that I had to give everything and die, I have to give myself the chance to do that in a few weeks, or at least try to. I will try to take a step further in Madrid, then another one in Rome and, in Paris … there is the moment to do it, whatever happens, there is no better place,” he said.

This week in Madrid, the next step, Nadal has been offered a further reminder of his age before he even steps onto the court. In the first round, he will face Darwin Blanch, a 16-year-old wildcard, in the opening round of the tournament. The age gap of 21 years and 117 days is the biggest age gap in any Masters 1000 match since they began in 1990. After learning of his improbable impending match with Nadal, Blanch took to his Snapchat, covering his face with his hand in shock: “Guys I play Nadal,” he wrote.

For anyone else arriving in this shape in the final stretch, the odds would be heavily stacked against them. But this is Nadal on the surface he has dominated and transformed like no man before him, the owner of 14 Roland Garros titles with a ridiculous 112-3 (97%) win-loss record and 26 Masters 1000 titles. The last time he won Roland Garros , in 2022, he did so with a foot that had been deadened with a painkiller injection.

As the end of his career draws ever closer, Nadal will look to make one last miracle happen as he tries to build his fitness and form across the clay season before arriving at Roland Garros in strong enough shape to throw everything he has at the tournament one last time, and to die, figuratively, on the court. He will take his next step this week on home soil.

During this time, tennis fans are preparing for a post-Nadal tour, and Del Potro is one of them. “I think we have to start assimilating that an era of tennis is going to end," he told Punto de Break .

“Roger [Federer] is no longer here, but his legacy was marked forever. And now Nadal is giving himself the pleasure of retiring in his own way and under his conditions.

"It is something that, unfortunately, I couldn’t do because of my health." Del Potro retired after the 2022 Argentina Open , citing knee pain.

Juan Martin del Potro consoling Rafael Nadal

The former world No. 3 continued: “What Rafa does is impressive. Watching him play and seeing that passion for competing and that energy he has is something unique, and I don’t know if there will be something similar in the next few years.

“I will continue watching him on TV. I’m not watching much tennis, but if Rafa or Novak [Djokovic] plays; of course, I watch it.”

Del Potro also reminisced on the most memorable of their on-court meetings. “The Rio match [a semifinal at the 2016 Olympics ] was emotionally very strong and spectacular, as an Argentine in Brazil and against Rafa.
