EZ-Loader A96BT 16-18 2800. Let us talk about this particular aluminum boat trailer.  If you have a boat that weighs at or less than 2800 pounds. And is in the 16 feet to 18 feet range. You and your boat will LOVE this trailer.

It is a Great fit for so many brand manufactures.  I personally have my boat on this trailer, it’s a 2000 Model Boston Whaler 160 Ventura with a 2021 Yamaha F115.  The boat runs 48 mph with a 17-pitch prop.

The oil bath hubs are so easy. 95% of our customers have never had issues with the oil bath hubs, and for those of us (me included) that do not like maintaining grease hubs. You will like these.  Just read about them or ask other buyers that you see at the boat ramps.

How Do I Pick a Boat Trailer?

Trailer Size

Trailer Weight

When determining the boat’s weight to estimate your trailer needs, you will need to go a little deeper than just what the manufacturer says the weight is on the spec sheets. The spec sheets do not include any cargo you have on board, fuel weight, additional features you have added, water, and other items like batteries, gear, etc. 

The weight is essential for determining the axles on the trailer. Typically, boats over 3,500 pounds required a tandem axle trailer, and boats under the 3,500-pound mark can use a single axle trailer. 

Boat Trailer Frame

There are two types of frames for boat trailers: steel and aluminum. There are benefits to each frame type, and which you choose comes down to personal preference. 

Steel Frames

Pros: 

• Strong and durable
• Well-protected wiring and brake lines
• Can be painted to match boat or towing vehicle
• Prone to rust and corrosion
• Painting, though inexpensive, can require additional maintenance 

Pro Tip: If you want a steel boat trailer and do not care about the color, opt for a galvanized finish. Especially if you are using a boat in saltwater, this offers protection from corrosion that paint will not. 

Aluminum Frames

• Less protection for wiring and brake lines

The cost of a boat trailer can range from $500 to over $10,000. The price depends on the materials, size, carrying weight, and design. We are going to give some examples of different types of common boat trailers. 

Single-Axle Boat Trailer Cost

A single-axle boat trailer can cost anywhere from $700 to over $4,000. Smaller 10’ to 14’ boats are usually under $1,500 but remember that weight, towing capacity, size, and accessories can always increase the price tag.

For single-axle trailers that carry boats in the 16’ to 21’ range, you can expect to pay between $2,000 and $4,000.

Another thing to keep in mind is that sometimes you pay for a brand name. More popular and well-known brands such as LoadRite or EXLoader can charge more for their products for this reason.

A double-axle boat trailer will cost more than its single-axle counterpart, but they can safely handle longer, heavier, and larger boats. You can expect to pay between $1,500 and $6,000 for a double-axle boat trailer. Most boats that require a double-axle boat trailer are in the 18’ to 25’ range.

Personal watercrafts like jet skis also require a trailer to move from location to location. Fortunately, manufacturers make smaller single-axle trailers specifically for personal watercrafts. These trailers usually cost between $500 and $4,000, depending on the frame material, towing capacity, weight, and size.

How Do I Haul a Boat Using a Trailer?

The first thing you need to think about when gearing up to haul a boat using a trailer is your tow vehicle. You need to have a vehicle available with a towing capacity to carry both the trailer’s weight and the fully loaded (gassed up, water tanks full, gear on board) weight of the watercraft. To find your vehicle’s towing capacity, consult your manufacturer or your manufacturer guidebook for your vehicle. 

Another way to determine towing capacity for your vehicle is to follow these steps: 

• Find out the curb weight of your vehicles, which is located on the VIN sticker 
• Add the weight of passengers, fuel, and cargo to the curb weight
• Subtract this number from your vehicle’s GCWR, which is also found on the VIN sticker (you may have to look this up using your VIN# if it’s not on the door sticker)

= Your vehicle’s max towing capacity

The second thing to think about when towing a boat using a trailer is your hitch. This is what connects the trailer to your vehicle. Boat trailer hitches are rated by ‘Class,’ ranging from Class I, Class II, Class III, Class IV, Class V. Class I hitches are for smaller lightweight boats under 2,000lbs. Class II hitches are good for loads up to the 3,500lb mark. Class III hitches are for boats up to 5,000lbs. Class IV goes up to 12,000lbs, and Class V can tow as much as 18,000lbs. The capacity of the hitch includes the weight of the boat and the trailer’s weight. 

Okay, now that you have all the properly fitted materials, it’s time to hook up the trailer to your tow vehicle. Here are the steps for this process: 

1. Align the hitch and ball, then lower the trailer hitch down over the ball.

2. Close the latch and insert the safety pin. 

Pro Tip: Never tow without the safety pin in place because the hitch might pop  off the ball when you hit a bump

3. Cross the safety chains, and attach them to the tow vehicle. They should always be crossed so if the hitch fails, the chains will support the trailer tongue, and it won’t dig into the asphalt

• Safety chains are underneath the ball and hitch and criss-cross each other. They hook into a specified area to ensure that if the ball and hitch fails, you still have a backup safety measure, so the trailer doesn’t fall on the road or crash. 

4. If your trailer has brakes, attach the safety line to the tow vehicle. (This will engage the brakes if, for some reason, the trailer comes free from the vehicle)

• These are safety brakes that are built into the trailer itself. If the vehicle becomes disconnected from the trailer, the wire will be pulled, and it will activate the trailer brakes so it will slow down. Think like the bracelet you wear on your wrist when you ride a jet ski that turns the machine off if you fall off. 

 5.  Plug in the lights, and run a full check to make sure they’re all working.

• Your vehicle should be compatible with towing, which means there will be a clear place to plug in the trailer’s lights, which is a wire that comes with every trailer. Simply plug this into your vehicle (like plugging in a power cord) and then test them to ensure it is working correctly. 

How to Get a Boat onto a Trailer

If this is your first boat or your first time using a boat trailer, you might be wondering how the heck you get the boat on it from in the water. It may seem obvious, but step one is to drive the boat to a docking site where you can back your boat trailer into the water and drive the boat up onto the trailer. There are a few best practices for getting a boat onto a trailer:

• Idle up to the launch ramp while you wait for the tow vehicle to back up into the water. 
• The tow vehicle should be in park and use the parking brake once in position in the water. 
• The tow vehicle driver can get out of the vehicle and help guide the boat onto the trailer. 
• Make sure the bow peak is aligned with the bow stop on the trailer.
• The boat should be able to float onto the back ⅔ of the trailer bunks. 
• Be conscientious of an outboard engine. If the boat docking area is shallow, you may need to trim the engine. 
• Once the boat is on the bow stop of the trailer, your helper (driver of tow vehicle) can use the winch strap to pull the boat up snug to the winch post. Once this is done, secure the safety chain to prevent the boat from slipping. 
• If the boat is crooked, you will need to back down the ramp and try to straighten it. 
• Once the boat is secure, pull the tow vehicle out of the water and finish securing the boat out of the way of the launchpad. 

Remember that every boat is different, and although these guidelines are helpful, you will need to take it slow and see how your boat reacts to launching and trailering. 

Tips and Tricks for Towing a Boat Safely 

Towing anything can be a challenge. It adds a lot of length to your vehicle, making turns and high speeds more difficult. We highly recommend practicing in an open parking lot or area before you tow anything on the road. To ensure you are towing a boat as safely as possible, we have some general guidelines and recommendations to follow: 

1. Always check your vehicle and the trailer to ensure everything is in street-ready working order.

• Connections are all tight
• Walk around vehicle 
• Ensure you have a chalk block 
• Check all the lights (hazards, brakes, etc) 
• Make sure the load is secure, and everything is strapped down 

2. If you sense swaying when towing, stop and recheck everything. 

3. Make wide turns to avoid clipping a curb or other obstructions.

4. Leave extra following room between your vehicle and those in front of you. When towing a heavy load, braking distance may be significantly increased.

5. When wind-blast shoves your rig sideways, you can minimize the effect by taking your foot off the accelerator. Do not step on the brakes.

6. Learn to use your side-view mirrors and not your rear-view mirrors. Consider getting an extender for your side-view mirrors if you need additional visibility. 

7. As soon as you arrive at the boat ramp, walk back to the trailer hubs and check that they’re cool to the touch. If they’re hot, your bearings aren’t functioning correctly and need to be serviced immediately.

8. Practice! This is not something anyone knows how to do well without some practice. Practice making right and left turns, practice backing up, and practice accelerating.

Genoa and mainsail halyards and the lines for the two furlers are brought back onto powerful stoppers that free the halyard winch, whenever necessary. All handling lines are to hand. The Oceanis 40CC's deck is totally logical, simple and efficient, with steps in the transom (standard bathing ladder), liferaft fixing point on aft coachroof, solid aluminum bulwark the full length of the hull, as well as an aluminum rubbing strake. The numerous opening hatches and Dorade vents are positioned in such a way so as not to impede movement on deck. Rebel 16 2008 January 8 By Staff This nimble and tough classic is perfect for a daysail or a day of racing This year the boat that holds claim to being America's first production fiberglass one-design will celebrate its 60th birthday. That the boat is still in production makes this milestone that much more remarkable. In 1948, fresh out of the Navy, Ray Greene began building a 16-foot family daysailer out of his Toledo, Ohio, shop using a revolutionary new material called fiberglass. The design of the boat was based on lines drawn by a local high school drawing instructor by the name of Alvin Younquist. With its wide, 6-foot, 7-inch beam and 110-pound steel centerboard the stable little boat known as the Rebel soon became a hit on the Midwest's inland lakes. And while Greene said he never intended to create a racer, thanks to the boat's performance-courtesy of a large 120-square-foot main and 46-square-foot jib on a fractional rig-it wasn't long before a competitive structure was built around the boat. By 1952 a class association had been firmly established and by 1963 the class boasted 138 active members. Not bad. Fleets started popping up across the Midwest, south into Kentucky and all the way down to Texas. Meanwhile, class members could be found sailing the inland lakes of the Eastern Seaboard from New York to Florida. After 25 years of building the Rebel, with more than 3,000 hulls produced, Greene was ready to call it quits and sold the works to a group of Chicago investors. Production of the Rebel continued at a steady pace during the 1970s, and was done under a number of names: Melling Tool Co., Rebel Industries and finally Spindrift One Designs. After Spindrift folded, the Rebel moved to Michigan in 1988 when Nickels Boat Works of Fenton took over with the production of the Mark V model. Nickels continues to build the Rebel, offering buyers a choice of a daysailer version for $9,860 or the optimum racing version for $11,872 less sails and trailer. A stainless steel centerboard now comes standard with the Rebel. Nickels also continues to be a great source for parts and accessories, as well as information, on the Rebel. One tough Rebel While there have been reports of problems with the foam flotation on older boats becoming waterlogged, that has been less of a problem on boats from the 1970s and later. Other than that, a buyer of a used Rebel should find few issues with the condition of this durable little boat. Indeed, boats 25 years and older will still top regatta leaderboards. "They're well made, very rugged boats that will last forever," said Al Vorel, National Rebel Association Commodore, who has been racing the same boat, No. 3914, for almost 20 years. "You don't have to run out every 5 to 10 years to buy a new boat." This is one of the reasons for the longevity of the class. Boats tend to stay in the family, passed down from parent to child, with the younger generations wanting to keep the racing going. "My mother races, and my daughter sometimes races, so there are times we'll have three generations on the course," Vorel said. This also, of course, keeps a lot of boats off the market, and finding a used Rebel can be a bit of a challenge. But thanks to the Internet, it's possible to locate a few sellers. Prices can vary from just under $1,000 for an older boat in need of some work to $3,000 or more for a later model. Buyers can typically expect to pay in the neighborhood of $1,500 for a pre-Nickels-era boat in good shape. We were fortunate enough to find a late 1970s Rebel listed for sale on www.craigslist.org. Better yet, the seller was within trailering distance. The offer on the boat was $1,400, so we drove out to take a look. The boat was well cared for, kept under a roof winters, and showed no structural damage. Other than some algae stains and scuff marks the finish looked good, and all the gear was there, including the main and jib, which the owner said he bought new about seven years ago. We did see some possible issues, including a rusty, pitted centerboard and a wooden rudder that looked to have some rotting. So we offered to pay the full $1,400 if the owner threw in the trailer, which he originally wanted an extra $200 for. The deal was closed and we drove off with the Rebel in tow. Rebel with a cause With the boat parked in our yard the first item of business we wanted to take care of was the rusty centerboard. Nickels offers a stainless steel replacement board, and we could picture how sweet the boat would look with a shiny new stainless fin. Unfortunately, these centerboards run close to $1,000; more than two-thirds the cost of the entire boat. So such an extravagant purchase didn't make much sense. Instead we set about rehabilitating the old board. We removed, with a bit of difficulty, the 110-pound board and set in on sawhorses. The first step was to remove the old paint using paint stripper, then power sanding. We then slathered on some Duro Naval Jelly to remove the rust, wiping down everything with paper towels then finishing up with a clean, acetone-soaked rag. Next, we filled in the pits and hollows with West Marine Surfacing Putty, and sanded everything smooth. We made certain the blade was fair by running a straight edge along the board. We also further faired the rounded leading edge of the board to within the class rule limits, which prohibit tapering less than 1/16th of an inch and more than one inch in from the leading edge. We then primed the board with several coats of Interlux Primocon primer, which when dried we wet sanded with 400-grit paper, and finished with a couple coats of Interlux VC-17m Extra bottom paint. With the centerboard done, we then turned to the rudder. An ice pick determined the wood was beginning to rot near the lower trailing edge. We probably could have rehabilitated the rudder as well, but since we had saved some money by not replacing the centerboard we decided to spring for a new rudder. We opted for a fiberglass blade, supplied by Nickels for $375. This cost covered just the blade, as the original aluminum rudder cheeks and hardware were still in good shape. While we were on the phone with Nickels, we decided to order all new running rigging to replace the weathered lines the boat came with. This included lines for the cunningham, boom vang, centerboard system, as well as sheets and halyards for both main and jib. The total for 112 feet of ¼-inch line and 105 feet of 5/16-inch line came to $100. Next we took a closer look at the standing rigging. The spars showed no defects, and with a bit of metal polish and elbow grease the rotating mast, boom and aluminum whisker pole looked good as new. The 1-by-9 stainless steel shrouds and forestay also showed no visible defects. We did, however, find the diamond stays on the mast to be tuned rather tight. According to the North Sail's One-Design tuning guide for the Rebel, an overly tight diamond can limit fore and aft mast bend, and can even cause negative pre-bend, where the mast bends forward at the tip. Since we want to have a competitive boat, we loosened the diamond tension and will readjust after doing some sea trials. As we said, we ultimately wanted to race our Rebel and didn't want a slow boat. So obviously the 7-year-old suit of sails had to go. This would be our biggest expense, and a new suit of sails would alone exceed the original cost of the boat. A new main and standard jib (a light air jib is also available) from North Sails set us back $1,615, which included $20 for class royalties but not shipping. Certainly this was a blow to our budget, but we rationalized it by thinking about the fun we would be having with some close racing come summer. Our last order of business was getting our bottom clean and smooth. We first scrubbed the hull down with a detergent then wet sanded everything below the rails to a slick surface with 1,200-grit paper. After a rinse and wipe down with the hose and clean towels we were satisfied we had a slick bottom. We finished off by treating all our hardware and moving bits to a little McLube Sailkote spray. We now have what we feel will be a contender on the course for our racing crew of two. Yet, with the roomy Rebel cockpit that can seat six, we're also looking forward to some lazy summer daysailing when friends and family show up. How is it made unsinkable?

What is the construction material, why are the bows of each float not level with the bow of the principle hull.

Can it be capsized or pitchpoled?

Can it be righted if is does become capsized, are the amas for the magnum 21 the same as for the virusplus, would the amas (floats) be large enough to form a kataram for two, is there access to the inside of the amas, how long does it take to rig or derig, single-handing.

How about raising the mast?

The mast can be hauled into position by a single person using the purchase of the main sheet blocks provided that lateral movement is prevented by the use of temporary short shrouds attached to the rings that hold the floats on (see below). But even this is unecessary unless you have strong winds. I now lift the mast up in one movement on my own. I have the spinnaker halyard already attached to the bow and once the shrouds are tight I pull on the mast-foot-end of the halyard until it is tight. Then the mast is secure and I can attach the forestay via the jib furler at my leisure.

During mast erection or lowering a couple of short temporary shrouds will help stabilise the mast in windy conditions or when you are doing the job alone.

Note the use of the main sheet attached to the ring at the bow intended for the gennaker. This gives plenty of mechanical advantage and makes the job of raising or lowering the mast really easy.

Magnum 21S - 2005 year. Stored in barn in Sussex This boat has had a lot of upgrades / work done to make it easy to sail shorthanded. It is great for daysailing adventures with a real turn of speed. 12 knots is not uncommon... Upwind performance is good in flat water and she points much better than a Hobie cat or Dart. She can be also be pulled up on a beach.

Draft is 1.4m with centreboard down. Bothe the rudder and centerboard have breakaway cleats that pop up if you touch the bottom. This prevents any damage. With foils up she draws a few inches. Can be stored on the trailer, mooring or marina.

With practice, 2 people can rig the boat from trailer to sailing in under an hour. There are some good videos on line that give tips. She can easily be sailed singlehanded, including the Code Zero/furling gennaker. Unsinkable design with foam filled hull and armas. I have had a lot of fun with this boat in UK and Greece but selling as I now have a larger yacht.

• Specification • Repainted topsides (Toplac) and polished white areas. Needs re-waxing /polishing but paint good. • Full bespoke storage cover - covers main hull and trampolines with zip cut outs for mast and shrouds. Made from Sunbrella - high quality with zips etc. • New composite rudder (2016 from Virus) with spare wooden original (in VGC) • Reinforced trampolines in good condition plus a brand new spare set from Virus.

One of the trampoline rods is missing a plastic end cap - replaced with gaffer tape. • New halyards, trapeze lines and some new sheets (2016). • Upgraded kicker with clam cleat 2016. • New jib - made by Batt sails 2016 • Spare jib in decent condition • Mainsail with 2 reefing points. One small repair but sail in good condition • Fully battened Mainsail converted to track cars - much easier to hoist and lower.

• Jib chute with line to raise. Protects jib from UV • New mainsail cover (2016). Much easier to leave main rigged than removing main each outing. • Lazy jacks • Topping lift • Upgraded metal camcleats on mast and boom. Some are side entry for ease of use.

Plastic lam cleats replaced • Barely used asymmetric spinnaker with new Hyde snuffer (2016) • Code zero on continuous line furler. Works very well for short handed or higher winds reaching up to 65 deg apparent. * Extending bowsprit for spinnaker. Plastic bush on bow for Bowsprit is cracked and has repair to limit any water ingress. • Furling gennaker • New main block with ratchet and adjustable sheeting angle (much easier to handle in a blow) • Danforth style anchor with Anchor bag.

• Additional cleat and fairlead for stern mooring or anchoring • Masthead wind vane (installed 2016) • Coppercoat antifouling • Compass• GPS "speed puck" readout mounted at base of mast. • Trailer with new wheel bearings 2016. £500 spent. I am selling without outboard but have a 6hp 4 stroke Mercury outboard in good condition fresh from service that I could negotiate to include for additional price. I also have a 10 HP Honda 4 stroke that gives 10knots under power.
