Model MARINER

1981 O'Day MARINER This is the proven hull of the Rhodes 19, designed by the famous naval architech Phil Rhodes. The Mariner version was re-designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates and has a self bailing cockpit with a mini cabin that sleeps 4 in a pinch and has a sink and a place for a porta pottie. It has a jumbo cockpit. This boat has a stainless steel mast stepping system that most likely no other Mariner has. This makes it easier to step the 25 foot mast. She is a tall fractional rig.  Knot-a-Clue is self righting, with a heavy cast iron ballast centerboard and internal lead ballast fiberglassed in to the bilge, at the builder. You do not baby this boat, you can sail it hard in heavy weather and be perfectly safe. The best part, is you can pick a different place to sail every time you go out and it is beach-able!

2012 Precision 185

2012 Precision 185

St. Paul, Minnesota

Make Precision

Length 18'5''

Designer Comments: The first offerings from PRECISION BOATWORKS nearly 20 years ago were open daysailors with a focus on good all around performance, and they have come full circle with their new PRECISION 185. In the interim, all but one of our eight previous PRECISION designs have featured enclosed interiors as part of their appeal. Only the PRECISION 15 (and PRECISION 15K) have been open boats, offering the joy of small boat sailing in its purest, simplest form. The P-15 design focused on stability, safety, lively performance and reliable handling, and she has been a huge success. The new PRECISION 185 expands on the broad appeal of her smaller sister by adding an extra dose of acceleration and speed to her performance profile. The *big daysailor* type is still probably best defined by the Lightning, Rhodes 19 and Flying Scott, all old favorites introduced nearly forty years ago. There has not been a great deal of innovation and development in this market for some time, and various new offerings have come and gone without making much of an impact. The PRECISION 185 will make her mark by using true state-of-the-art design and construction technology to combine vastly improved ergonomics and higher performance with low weight, low maintenance, and low cost. Comfortable seating, computer-shaped hull and fins, and precise tooling will all contribute to the appeal of this *new century* competitor. Like her smaller sister, the PRECISION 185 features a large, self-draining cockpit, a secure spot for a portable ice chest, practical under-deck storage, straightforward rigging, and high quality hardware. Her swim platform at the transom is an unusual feature usually reserved for large offshore cruisers. In addition to contributing to the fun by getting swimmers back aboard more easily and allowing youngsters to trail their toes in water, this *back porch* can contribute to safety by facilitating boarding from a dinghy, and recovering from an accidental *man overboard* incident more easily and quickly. The performance parameters of the PRECISION 185 are not intended to put her in the realm of a *crash and burn* Australian 18 skiff, but they will give her the kind of acceleration and speed that will turn heads and quicken the pulse when desired. She will offer speed, stability and control over a wide range of conditions that will be the envy of both her classic and contemporary competitors. She will sail beautifully under main alone when shorthanded or in heavy weather. Her broad deck beam and high-volume side decks will help keep her crew dry, and maximize her resistance to capsize. She shares the careful balance and dynamic stability that have earned the PRECISION 15, 165, 18, 21, 23 and 28 their well-earned reputations as lively, reliable performers in all conditions. PRECISION BOAT WORKS continues to focus entirely on small boats, and their long experience and expertise in this market is second to none. They have built all of our PRECISION designs with meticulous care, and their commitment to high- quality construction is unwavering. We share their pride in everything they build, and we are confident that the new PRECISION 185 will quickly earn her place as a worthy addition to their well-respected line. Charging SystemsIn 2004 Tai-Pan's electrical charging system was recently rewired by Rasmussen Marine Electric. Inc. for AC and DC charging. This involved installing new Phase Three model PT-14 3 stage smart charger, two battery banks (house and starter), New breaker switch for windlass, charging solinoid, volt and temp guages in cockpit, FWD bilge pump, new ground bar and wiring, with new electric switches charging, outlets, and heating. (Total cost $3,268.24),I later added a third house battery bank and three solar panels (18 w, 23 w, & 48 w) hooked separately to each battery bank w separate battery controllers. Deck:Tai-Pan has a cosmetic teak deck overlaying a solid wood deck, which is covered on both sides with fiberglas. The teak deck is tough as nails and as long as she is well caulked with Boat Life Teak Deck Sealant, her deck should stay high and dry many years to come.Recently added another scupper on both port and starboard side, to aid water drainage. Entire deck appears hard and firm, with no signs of damage to underlayment. Sails: Tai-Pan is a simple mast head sloop with a Hood twin grooved jib roller furling system? The only sails Tai-Pan really needs to go sailing are her main sail, her furling jib. However, because my plans were to circumnavigate on Tai-Pan, I have added much to her sail inventory and her rigging. Her sail inventory now consists of:Two main sails, Two Furling Genoas approximately 150% (One low cut light, and one high cut heavier sail. One Storm sail hanks onto an inner forestay with two running back stays during extreme weather conditions. One Trysail that fits on separate mast track for extreme stormy weather. Spars: In 2008, I removed the Sitca Spruce mast, rebonded open joints with epoxy, repainted mast, replaced old brass masthead wire sheaves with custom built Acetal (also known as Delrin) sheaves to accommodate two new main and jib halyards of VPC New England rope, which are polyester braid cover with a core of blended Vectran and MFP (polypropylene). I also replaced three old wire rope winches on mast with Barient 22's and one Barient 21. I left on wire mast up haul intact. I also installed one new spinnaker halyard and inner stay halyard of same VPC material. of same material.Tai-Pan still contains her original Sitca spruce furling boom, which would be handy for shortening sail or raising boom to accompany a high bimini.Original Sitca spruce spinnaker pole. Removable Bow Sprit added for flying Asymetrical or Code Zero sails off spinnaker halyard. Two extendable 19' whisker poles for downwind sailing wing-on-wing with two jibs, either both attached to the twin grooved Hood furler, or attached to the new Solent stay, which has yet to be installed. She won in the end, and we are now raising our new child high in the mountains of the Philippines. And thus, this very special boat is now desperately in search of a new caretaker. 2004 Stuart Marine Rhodes 19

  • Description

Seller's Description

Get sailing with this well-maintained 2004 fast-but-forgiving Rhodes 19 sloop. Beautiful navy blue hull with white cockpit and decks. Its stored on-trailer rigged and ready to sail at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. Sail it there, or trailer it to its new home.

The Classically styled Rhodes 19 is the ideal family daysailer and spirited one-design racer. She’s an accomplished heavy-weather performer built upon a fast and forgiving hull. Fifty years and 3500 hulls have proven her design, construction, and sailing character to beginning and experienced sailors alike. Production of the Rhodes 19 began in 1958 by ODay, and continues to this day by Stuart Marine in Rockland Maine.

Equipment: This is a complete package: mainsail with jiffy reefing, roller furling jib, boom-end main sheet for a clear cockpit and custom Bimini, working masthead anchor light and tricolor, 2 100 Ah deep cycle batteries and 2 100w solar panels on the foredeck, tiller pilot, Dandorth 8s anchor with 6 of chain plus 100 of rode, 6 hp 4-stroke Tohatsu longshaft outboard with 5 gal tank, fold-up transom swim ladder, canvas boat cover, and galvanized boat trailer with light bar. If you might want to use it as a pocket cruiser, also included are custom v-berths and a complete bug-free cockpit tent. Towing weight is 1500 pounds, doable even for many smaller vehicles.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The RHODES 19 has it’s origins with HURRICANE class (1945) which was a molded plywood centerboarder with an open cockpit built by Allied Aviation Corp. Another builder, Palmer Scott, purchased a number of unfinished HURRICANE hulls, added a foredeck with cuddy cabin, and a fixed keel. This boat was sold as the SMYRNA. It was from the SMYRNA that Marscot Plastics made a plug for a fiberglass version. This was the boat that was later sold by O’Day Corp. as the RHODES 19. There are keel and centerboard versions. The fixed keel version become the standard for class racing.

The customer portal was easy to use and lets you keep track of where in the process your sails are. Great sails, great service -Graham Edwards (Facebook)

“ We received our spinnaker and launched it yesterday and I just wanted to let you know how pleased we are with it. The service we received from your company was exceptional and the quality of your product is second to none. We will certainly be return customers in the next few months to replace our main and jib sails and will recommend your company to all our sailing buddies. Once again-thank you.” -Daniel Jackson (Google)
“ we had good communication during the planning stages and the knowledgeable people at precision sails really got me fixed up good! The sails look and work fabulous! my boat sails better than it ever had! couldn’t be more pleased with the product AND the service!” -Fred Jelich (Facebook)
