Q+A with My Yacht Group Founder Nicholas Frankl

The Formula One U.S. Grand Prix —where some of the world's fastest and most expensive cars will compete—kicks off tomorrow in Austin, Texas. People travel from all over the world to attend.

On the eve of the second-to-last race of the season, we thought we’d check in with Nicholas Frankl, die-hard F1 fan, founder of My Yacht Group , Olympian bobsledder (who has a friendly but competitive bobsledding rivalry with HSH Prince Albert of Monaco), and collector of many things—yachts, cars, and, yes, even refrigerator magnets.

This Los Angeles- and London-based serial entrepreneur, hospitality guru, and tastemaker has collected over 100 magnets from his jet-setting travels around the globe, everywhere from Christmas Island to Monaco, where he attended his first Grand Prix when he was six years old—and where he first got the idea for My Yacht Group, eight years ago.

“I saw an opportunity to create a unique hospitality experience to cater to the high net-worth and discerning guests who are looking to have ‘game,’ as well as provide a showcase for luxury brands [to] be part of one of the most glamorous events on the annual social calendar,” says Frankl.

We asked Frankl a few questions as he was finalizing details on his F1 events at the Circuit of the Americas.

Q: What’s your favorite race to watch? A: Monaco, hands down. It’s historic (2014 is the 72nd), iconic (every driver wants to win at Monaco), and glamorous (Royalty, rock stars, A-list, global elite!). I’ve been attending for the past 20 years and hosting super yacht events on board My Yacht Monaco for the past 8 years; it’s simply the most incredible experience someone—F1 fan or not—can have.

Q: What’s your favorite car to drive? A: McLaren F1 Why? Still the ultimate expression of formula one meets road car with zero driver aids. For guys who know how to drive!

Q: Tell us about your magnet collection.

A: Monaco (top): I have a very special relationship with this unique principality. Lots of friends, many years of visiting for holidays and family celebrations, including my father's remarriage 17 years ago and my 40th birthday in 2011, plus the flagship event for My Yacht Group during the iconic Monaco Grand Prix. I haven't missed a Grand Prix there in 20+ years, and long may the tradition continue!

Christmas Island, Kiribati (middle): Possibly the farthest flung destination I've ever visited. The magnet is as simple as the island. Basic accommodation, food caught fresh daily, epic waves, campfire stories, and the most incredible night skies I've ever seen.

Salt Lake City (bottom): This was my third time as an Olympian, driving Bobsled for Hungary—and SLC will always be my favorite games. Amazing atmosphere, great organization, plus a bleacher full of friends, it was our best ever finish. I return often to ski at Park City and Deer Valley, sometimes re-visiting the bob track, and it brings back the most special memories.

Q: Top spots to feel like a local in LA and London? A: A mix of members clubs and iconic restaurants: Soho House, Nobu Malibu, Chateau Marmont; RAC Club on Pall Mall, Boodles, Annabel’s, 5 Hertford

Q: What’s your best travel secret? A: Hand luggage only, no alcohol, and a swim upon arrival whenever possible.

The outrageous life of British ex-Olympian millionaire and superyacht party-thrower Nicholas Frankl

The Monaco F1 Grand Prix, considered to be the most glamorous sporting events in the world, kicks off on May 25, and one man is guaranteed to be living it up at the most exclusive superyacht party in town.

Nicholas Frankl, 45-year-old three-time winter Olympian and co-founder of My Yacht Group , will host a four-day exclusive bash on a private superyacht moored in a prime spot on the Quay Kennedy straightaway to mark the 75th edition of the Grand Prix.

In its 12th year, the party prides itself on "connecting the world's most interesting people," and promises to bring together some of the world's most elite circles, including a mix of actors, astronauts, billionaires, celebrities, models, politicians and even royalty.

However, this is far from being Frankl's first rodeo.

He says he has made millions throwing some of the most exclusive parties in the world, where the guests are picked up in Ferraris, have a combined net worth of approximately $75 to $100 (£58 to £77) billion, and go through over 100 bottles of €300 ($335) Champagne.

Business Insider caught up with Frankl to hear about his world of glitz and glamour, which recently earned him a spot on the Channel 4 program "How'd You Get So Rich?"

Scroll down for a sneak peek inside Frankl's outrageous life, which he spends globe trotting and partying with the top 1%.

Meet 45-year-old millionaire Nicholas Frankl, former Olympian, avid Formula 1 fan, and co-founder of My Yacht Group.

He was born in London to a British mother and Hungarian father, Andrew Frankl. Andrew was a sports journalist and commentator, focusing on Formula 1.

He took Nicholas and his twin sister, Annabelle, to their first F1 race when they were only six weeks old.

'Like all young school boys I wanted to drive in Formula 1,' Frankl told Business insider. 'I grew up around drivers because of my father. But at that time, in the 1960s and 1970s, lots of motor racers were being killed and he was not keen on the idea.'

Andrew also commentated on bobsled during various Olympic Games for Hungarian TV, which peaked Nicholas' interest in the sport, and ultimately led to him competing in three Olympic games.

nicholas frankl my yacht group

Frankl participated in the 1994, 1998 and 2002 Olympic Games as driver and captain of the Hungarian bobsled team. "I went from zero to Olympics in one year," he said.

"Most other teams had like 25-30 people, and we had three. But my main objective was to compete and make friends."

His connection to the lives of the rich and famous began when the family moved to Monaco, where Frankl now lives.

When his bobsledding career ended, he started to focus on working sponsorship deals. Between 1996 and 1999, he had worked running a big sponsorship deal for royal jeweller Asprey and Ferrari's Formula 1 team. This gave him his first exposure to ultra high-net worth individuals.

"If you can't drive with them you may as well be hired by them," says Frankl. "Yeah, you get some prima donnas who may need their egos massaging, but I was quite adept at it and I enjoy looking after people."

'The one thing they all appreciated more than anything else was being on a superyacht,' he said. 'And the fact is, super yachts trump anything else.'

Once the sponsorship job finished, Frankl says people continued to call him up asking him to get them into the coolest and most exclusive venues, such as Jimmy'z in Monaco. "I became sort of an unpaid concierge," he said.

Frankl and Annabelle saw a niche opening on the partying circuit, and founded My Yacht Group in 2005. They now throw some of the most talked about parties in the world.

nicholas frankl my yacht group

"I could see that Formula 1 did not cater very well to the ultra high net worth crowd, so I set out to create an environment where like minded people could connect on a much higher level," he said.

The parties keep him busy. There are usually around 120 guests at the parties with a combined net worth of approximately $75 to $100 (£58 to £77) billion.

nicholas frankl my yacht group

"That doesn't mean to say that everyone on board is a billionaire — that would be boring," he said.

There is no expense spared. 'Everything is six star,' says Frankl. 'We drink Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque vintage rosé champagne which costs €300 ($335) a bottle, and we will go through 100 bottles pretty easily.'

nicholas frankl my yacht group

"And we'll have at least a kilo of caviar on board if not more," he adds.

Frankl's firm provide all transport to and from the superyachts and party venues with the various event sponsors, which to date include Ferrari, Cadillac limousines, and Mercedes Benz.

Lewis Hamilton apparently drove the Silver Arrows Mercedes speedboat at last year's Monaco Grand Prix event.

Guests at one of Frankl's events can expect to rub shoulders with the rich and famous. His clientele includes the likes of His Royal Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco (pictured below).

As well as royalty, you can expect the likes of other celebrity guests, such as Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner and Julian Lennon, son of John Lennon (both pictured).

Lewis Hamilton, Nigel Mansell, the Countess of Wessex, Prince Edward, Boris Becker, actress Michelle Rodriguez, and Easyjet entrepreneur Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou have all also attended Frankl's events.

Models adorned in expensive jewels paraded the "White Party" thrown in partnership with Bulgari in St Barts. Frankl estimates around $10 million worth of jewellery was on board that superyacht.

His upcoming four-day shindig in Monaco will set guests back $17,000 (€16,000) per couple, which Frankl considers 'very reasonable' if you take into account the competition.

"Lots of people offer hospitality in the harbour where you can’t see anything. We have the best view, the best quality champagne, and the best crowd," he says.

After Monaco, Frankl has the America’s Cup Finals in Bermuda and San Francisco Fleet Week to look forward to, among many other dazzling events. However, if his Instagram is anything to go by, the millionaire does occasionally take a moment to relax.

Debuts and anniversaries for My Yacht Group

nicholas frankl my yacht group

While My Yacht Group is primed to ride the swelling wave of F1 popularity across the Atlantic, the Principality-based company will celebrate 15 years at the Monaco GP. Co-founder Nicholas Frankl shares with us his plans for the busy 2022 racing calendar.

Glamour and motorsport tend to go hand-in-hand, especially Formula 1. Accustomed to playing a nexus role and uniting these elements in Monaco each year, My Yacht Group is setting its lofty gaze further afield this year as they prepare for the first Miami Grand Prix.

As Co-Founder Nicholas Frankl told Monaco Life, “You want to be on a superyacht, that’s the special magic of the harbour of Monte-Carlo.” Now, they’re taking that “magic” to Florida as the sporting world, as well as the yachting and hospitality communities, prepare for the latest addition to an ever-expanding F1 calendar.

The race, which takes place on 8th May, will do so in one of the least glamorous settings – a car park. This led then Race Director Michael Masi to say in November that “it’s far from a race in a car park,” and that it will be “something unique.”

The original plan for the Miami circuit was for it to run around Biscayne Boulevard and downtown Miami. That plan was ultimately foiled, but is one that, according to automotive writer Frankl, might have gone through if it were proposed today. “At the time, Miami and Miami locals didn’t really know a lot about Formula 1,” he began.

“I have a suspicion that the mayor, who is pro-business and pro-Miami, and governor Ron DeSantis would have made it happen. Also, locally, I suspect that there would be a much higher level of support, because now thanks to Netflix and their documentary series ‘Drive to Survive’, it’s the biggest growth sport in America today.”

nicholas frankl my yacht group

The race in Miami has been sold out for weeks. Offering a different kind of experience, and a VIP one at that, will be My Yacht Group, who are primed to ride the swelling wave of F1 popularity across the Atlantic.

Frankl, who co founded My Yacht Group with his sister Annabelle, detailed their upcoming super yacht party in the ‘Sunshine State’: “We are very well known for hosting sophisticated, fun and elegant super yacht parties, always charity related and charity themed, and so that is exactly what we’re doing on a special boat called Gene Chaser , a 55m research vessel.”

“They have labs on-board, as well testing facilities and a mobile MRI machine, so it’s very much a technical showcase. We are hosting a business networking and investor reception for a curated guest list of only 100 people, representing around $250bn of net worth,” says Frankl. “We will then turn it into a My Yacht Club, which is the pop-up nightlife experience we’ve successfully hosted at the Austin GP since 2012. It’s a combination of a charity and investor reception, then a full-on party, DJ, bottle service, VIP event… We have partnered with world-famous celebrity chef Todd English, who will be personally catering on-board for our guests.”

Frankl also revealed that they will be running an event at the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix in November 2023, a race that was announced back in March and will be the third US GP on the calendar. Frankl, however, isn’t worried about F1 saturating the American market. “I think the US can easily absorb three races,” he says.

15 years of Monte-Carlo glamour

Heading back to more familiar shores, just as they have been for the last 15 years, My Yacht Group will once again be hosting a full track side super yacht hospitality weekend and their popular Friday night party during this May’s Monaco Grand Prix.

After last year’s more muted event, which involved two private astronaut receptions, My Yacht Group returns to normality in style. In what Frankl describes as a “huge charity weekend”, guests will board the DB9 yacht, acquired in the auction at the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation gala back in September. “All the proceeds from that auction item, which is several hundred thousand euros, went to the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, and we are very proud to be promoting and supporting the PA2F once again throughout the weekend,” said Frankl.

nicholas frankl my yacht group

My Yacht Group has just released three on-board luxury cabins for “the ultimate experience”. Guests will be able to stay in Port Hercules during the Grand Prix weekend, trackside, as well as mingle with VIP guests.

“We will have commander Michael Lopez-Alegria, a five-time world-record holding, US hall-of-fame astronaut who has just arrived back from the International Space Station (ISS). He is commander of the first all-private mission to the ISS with Axiom Space, a company that I and several other Monaco residents invested in.”

Frankl says it would be great to help send a Monegasque to space. “We would love to take the first Monaco astronaut to the ISS. It would be incredible to see a member of the Princely family, or a Monegasque citizen, spend 10 days aboard, conducting medical and scientific research for humanity.”

nicholas frankl my yacht group

Commander Lopez-Alegria will be attending both the Miami and Monaco VIP events, as well as representatives from Vita Inclinata, a manufacturer that has designed a “life-saving autonomous power system” to stabilize cradles on helicopters and cranes. The company recently delivered $500,000 worth of their equipment to Ukraine, and trained Ukrainian medevac crews how to use it during the ongoing war. They will exhibit their technology on the superyacht crane in Monaco over the GP weekend. “That’s the first time it will be demonstrated in this way,” revealed Frankl.

Nicholas Frankl Talks My Yacht Monaco at Monaco Grand Prix

By P. Joseph

My Yacht Monaco is one of the great modern success stories of the Monaco Grand Prix. Founded in 2004, the yacht hospitality firm has become a thriving one-stop shop for guests seeking a unique experience at one of the world’s most prestigious motor-racing events.

The three-day hospitality event offers clients a prime vantage point from which to view the racing on-board a private superyacht parked right by the race track. Guests are treated to an entire weekend programme, including a Royal yacht party attended by the cream of Monaco society.

The brains behind the concept is Nicholas Frankl, whose association with Monaco extends beyond yachts, or indeed Formula One. Mr Frankl is close friends with Prince Albert of Monaco - who attends the yacht party - and has competed three times against the Prince in the Winter Olympics at bobsleigh.

Sitting down with Superyacht.com’s Shari Liu at the recent Monaco Grand Prix, on-board the 44.6-metre Feadship Harle, Mr Frankl discussed the inspiration behind My Yacht Monaco, and why this year’s offering has been better than ever.

“My Yacht Monaco was founded catering specifically to luxury brands - companies like Bombardie business aircraft, Vertu, Spyker, Luxor champagne, Aspery jewellery and watches,” said Mr Frankl.

“Their clients are executives who fly around the world, are expected to be treated well, and are used to being treated very well in their home countries.

“But when they get to Monte Carlo they don’t know anybody, they haven’t been here before, and everything is ‘Ooh monsieur, impossible’ because nobody know who they are.”

Mr Frankl said he estimates that there was between $75 and 100 billion dollars worth of guests at this year’s event – out of a total of 250 guests. And with that level of wealth on-board, it is no surprise that luxury brands are clambering to join the party.

“We have Victor Muller of Spyker here – and the brand new Spyker Aileron outside – we have Henrik Fisker and the new Fisker electric car, we have Luxor Gold champagne at 500 euros a bottle that we’re serving like water, we have caviar, we have a Gold show, we have Chateau d'Esclans who make the finest rose wine in the world, Whispering Angel,” Mr Frankl said.

“So we have an amazing combination, and then we have the magic which is the guests, because you can put all that together but if you have the wrong guests you’ve got the wrong atmosphere.”

An 18-time veteran attendee of the Monaco Grand Prix, Mr Frankl believes there is nothing like it on earth – and for luxury brands, it is a no-brainer to get involved.

“Some of the brands are affiliated to formula one, but most of them are not, they’re just extremely luxurious brands that want to enjoy the Monaco Grand Prix, reach their audience, reach their clients, host their clients on-board, and reward them at what is one of the greatest weekends in the world, Mr Frankl added.

“We have Formula One sponsors, we have Formula One guests of course, we have drivers coming and attending as well, and we have the Prince.

“For luxury brands who want to reach the best clients in the world in a convivial, social environment, there’s no better place to do it than at the Monaco Grand Prix on a private 30 million dollar Feadship. Where else can you go?”

With My Yacht Monaco consistently adding to the glitz and glamour of one of the world’s great sporting occasions, the Monaco Grand Prix will be hoping that Nicholas Frankl and his innovative hospitality venture will be going nowhere.

An interview with ‘My Yacht Group’ Founder Nicholas Frankl

An interview with ‘My Yacht Group’ Founder Nicholas Frankl

Now in its 12th year, My Yacht Monaco is an exclusive four-day experience that takes place during the Monaco Grand Prix. During the event, discerning guests and luxury brand partners are invited to enjoy an extraordinary weekend of Formula One race viewing and luxury hospitality aboard a private yacht.

With this year’s Monaco event less than two months away, we took the opportunity to sit down with Nicholas Frankl, co-founder of My Yacht Group, to find out more about the prestigious occasion and the company’s burgeoning operations across the world.

Superyachts: Can you start by telling us a little about the company’s background and what inspired you to create it?

Nicholas Frankl: I was running the royal jeweller Asprey’s sponsorship with the Ferrari F1 Team from 96-99 when Michael Schumacher, Eddie Irvine and Jean Todt were with the team and quickly realized that the guests of the team’s commercial sponsors were from a totally different socio-economic background than these high net worth entrepreneurs, CEOs, Lords, Ladies, music and movie celebrities. It was clear that we had to create a like-minded & sophisticated experience with which all of our guests were comfortable, so I suggested a VIP yacht at the Monaco F1 GP. We hosted a fabulous evening aboard “Iroquois” with owner John Henry and It was a tremendous success!

Since those early days, as mass luxury has expanded with globalization around the world and true luxury occasions for UHNW guests have diminished with too much clutter trying to reach the 1% and 0.1%, we built on our annual signature My Yacht Monaco weekend experience with the generous support of some extraordinary guests, and have organically and annually expanded to more and new events globally.

What type of services do My Yacht Group provide and what events can people find you at around the world?

We connect the world’s most interesting people, using a super yacht to elevate the brand and guest experience whilst showcasing the yacht for sale or charter and whilst remaining focused on our category-exclusive, best in class brand partners’ objectives whether they be private Swiss banks like Vontobel, The Government of Bermuda and Bermuda Business Development Agency, Silver Arrows Marine, Bvlgari or Perrier Jouët to host & appreciate their top clients whilst also engaging with our own qualified Ultra High Net Worth attendees.  We concentrate on curating a very intimate and friendly environment that enables meaningful relationships to be established.

How would you describe your clients – do they share any common characteristics?

They are all successful in their chosen fields. From astronauts to surgeons, industrialists to financiers, photographers, models, actors, to musicians, artists, racing drivers, Olympic athletes, each one is a high achiever who appreciates being in like-minded, synergistic company.

Why do you think yachting and Formula One complement each other so well?

They are both at the pinnacle of human engineering and design. They represent the best in the automotive and nautical professions and attract a very similar clientele. There is no greater experience and ‘bucket list’ item than watching the Monaco Grand Prix weekend from the stern of our super yacht moored trackside on Quay Kennedy whilst sipping chilled Perrier Jouët and Whispering Angel rosé!

I understand you are planning an event for the America’s Cup Final in Bermuda later this year – what can you tell us about that?

Yes. In partnership with our global partner the Bermuda Government and BDA we will bring the magic & glamor of My Yacht to the America’s Cup for the Finals week, June 21-26, with two separate experiences.

Firstly a private invitation-only My Yacht Group reception for 120 America’s Cup and Bermuda dignitaries aboard a super yacht moored in Hamilton.  And secondly we will create My Yacht Club Bermuda, an exclusive nightclub experience on Front Street, right in downtown Hamilton, similar to our past 5 years of success with My Yacht Club at the Austin F1 GP (Oct 21-23).  Four nights only, private tables, bottle service, international DJs, live entertainment.

Are there any ambitions to expand the company over the coming years?

We are expanding every year! We were the first to host a super yacht reception at the famed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance five years ago, the first to host one at Art Basel Hong Kong three years ago, and the first to establish the My Yacht Club at the Austin F1 Grand Prix.

We launched My Yacht St. Bart’s last December as the opening event of the high season on that little Caribbean paradise with our partners Bvlgari, Si Barth, Perrier Jouët and Gustavia Yacht Club, and benefitting Operation Healing Forces. It was such a hit we repeated it again for Valentine’s week and are making this an annual celebration with Bvlgari in December.

This is in parallel with our new Los Angeles yacht party on October 14th, plus Bermuda is taking our fabulous experiences to new audiences and locations, which is really exciting.  And for 2018, we’re also looking at Singapore and South America.

Victor Mukhin, Speaker at Chemical Engineering Conferences

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.
