The Discovery Voyage
An exploration of the seas and coasts of Cornwall. Exact itineraries will be flexible according to weather, sea conditions and latest sightings.
Embark on a Marine Wildlife Adventure
Join us on our sailing catamaran, Shearwater II, for a unique marine wildlife watching adventure. The diversity of the wildlife found in West Cornwall is what makes it special. Trips could encounter grey seals, various seabirds, or different species of dolphins and porpoises, enigmatic ocean sunfish or even giants such as minke whales, humpback whales, basking sharks and leatherback turtles!
Sailing gives you the most special encounter possible, the quiet meaning you can hear the splashes of the gannets as they dive and the whistles of the dolphins as they bowride alongside us check out our videos to see for yourself. Be assured also that you have chosen the most environmentally responsible option.
Part of what makes Marine Discovery exceptional is that we use our trips to collect scientific data. No other tour company in the country does this to the same extent and it is an incredibly important part of our job. Duncan, Hannah and their small team are completely dedicated to giving the best experience possible and are looking forward to welcoming you to Marine Discovery – In 2013 Marine Discovery won the Responsible Whale and Dolphin Watch Operator of the year.

Different Wildlife
What people are saying about marine discovery ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.
A fantastic 4 hour trip we both massively enjoyed. We went on the Ocean Discovery trip and saw a great amount of Dolphins, Sea Birds and Seals, as well as the incredible sight of the Cornish coast. If you care about wildlife and the environment, this is most certainly the trip for you as they let the wildlife come to you (which the Dolphins did in abundance for us), instead of motoring into the feeding grounds, disrupting the wildlife, like some other operators. The boat itself is really comfy, with plenty of places to sit and enjoy whats going on around you!
Definitely recommend the 3 hour tour (we would opt for 4 hours next). Hannah and Duncan were very knowledgeable, not only of the local sea-life (above and below) but also coastal landmarks. They were extremely careful to not disturb feeding cetaceans, remaining at a distance for them to break away and visit us. This was in stark contrast to a tourist tripper boat that ploughed straight into their feeding area. Would definitely recommend a tour with these guys.
This afternoon we had a 4 hour trip on Marine Discovery, and were so lucky to see firstly , common dolphin, at a small distance, and then a little later a big pod of Bottle nosed Dolphins. Duncan said it was unusual to see both of these at this time of year. He is very knowledgable and gave us facts and figures of dolphin swim speeds, and bird flight speeds as well as much more interesting information. Such a lovely trip, and all done according to marine conservation code. A really lovely afternoon. Thank you Duncan & Rebecca
Had the most brilliant 3 hour trip with Marine Discovery Penzance - been coming to Cornwall for years but only just stumbled upon the company. Cannot recommend the experience enough - the weather was perfect, the boat is lovely, Duncan and Sara couldn’t have made us feel more welcome (and had so much knowledge to share) AND we got to see seals and dolphins. We felt very lucky to have seen them. We went on board knowing that animal sightings can’t be guaranteed so this was a real highlight. Even if we hadn’t seen much wildlife, the boat ride and the sights would have still been great. Thanks again to Duncan and Sara
We took the 3hr trip in the morning and it was absolutely wonderful! The catamaran was very comfortable with room to move around if need be. It was quiet and peaceful, making it all the more enjoyable for everyone (including the wildlife). We were lucky enough to spot some Risso’s dolphin and grey seals. The guides were super knowledgeable about the area and animals and were constantly on the look out for signs of interesting wildlife. Couldn’t recommend this trip enough and we can’t wait to come back, I just wish I could give more than 5 stars!

Sailing Holidays Cornwall
Classic Sailing offers hands on sailing adventures on traditional boats and tall ships all over the world, but our heart is in Cornwall. Our office is in Portscatho and our home port is the sailors paradise of St Mawes.
Pilot cutter ‘Eve of St Mawes’ was our first charter boat and for 20 years she explored every cove and creek in Cornwall and the Scillies. She has been replaced by her bigger sister ‘Tallulah’ who carries on the company ethos of adventure afloat and exploring ashore by rowing boat. In addition to our St Mawes based pilot cutter we now have a growing fleet of beautiful boats that are based in Cornwall for you to enjoy. Cornwall has many picturesque anchorages, fishing villages and tree lined creeks to visit and plenty of sea room in deep waters without strong tides.
Why is Cornwall Great for Sailing?
North Cornwall offers you the crashing waves, old mine chimneys and rugged scenery straight out of the Poldark TV series. Ideal for surfers but an unfriendly shore for sailing ships. In contrast South Cornwall is just about perfect for sailors. The Isles of Scilly are a granite archipelago off Lands End are a more advanced sailing playground to navigate but a holiday destination that is out of this world.
The granite cliffs of West Penwith protect Mounts Bay from the North West and the Lizard Peninsula cuts down some of the ocean swell and creates a varied sailing ground to explore around Falmouth Bay. Small fishing villages nestle in every sheltered bay or river from Cadgwith to Cawsand and there are plenty of anchorages where you can be the only boat.
Cornwall is windy, one of the sunniest regions of Britain, un polluted, the seas are unbelievably blue. There are plenty of headlands to aim for, creeks to navigate, picturesque ports small stone quaysides to discover.
There is a long tradition of boat building, seafaring, fishing and world exploration from Cornish shores. World renowned chefs have made their home here and we can row to some great waterside pubs without a streetlight in sight.
Isles of Scilly – Wildlife and Sub Tropical Flora
Located 35 miles from Lands End are the Isles of Scilly. Part of Cornwall but totally unique, this archipelago of granite reefs, white sand beaches offers a challenging but rewarding sailing ground. The islands of Tresco, St Agnes, Bryher, St Marys and St Martin all have their charm and there are awesome anchorages off uninhabited islands too. The seas are crystal clear as there are no rivers in the Scillies so it is great for snorkelling. The wide range of habitats from moorland, woodland, dunes, inaccessible rocks and mud and sand flats make a great home for wildlife and staging post for migrating birds.
We have been taking guest crew to this amazing archipelago 35 miles off Lands End since 1997. If you want to connect with the islands history then sail on a pilot cutter like Tallulah. For 100 years the pilot trade was the islands main economy, before flowers and then tourism took over. Built in oak and larch 44ft Tallulah is an authentic replica of the Scillionian pilot cutters that were based in the islands around 1870-1890’s, so the islanders love to see her visit. Bristol channel Pilot cutter Mascotte also visits The Isles of Scilly regularly.
Also setting sail to the Scillies on a regular basis are larger wooden sailing ships like ‘Grayhound’, ‘Pilgrim’, Anny and Johanna Lucretia. They might not be able to tuck into the smaller anchorages but they can drop their hook in deeper places. All know the isles well and offer a great social atmosphere on board. The islands sit in the Gulf Stream so ashore sub tropical plants flourish and the seas are rich in wildlife with good opportunities to spot dolphins, basking sharks and seals.
The Isles of Scilly have their own destination pages describing what to do on each island, the routes you might sail amongst the islands and some of our favourite anchorages.
A Mecca for Wooden Boats, gaffers, luggers and tall ships
Cornwall has a lot of wooden boats and boatyards. Down here in the SW of England we race Falmouth Oyster Boats and in winter similar half decked gaffers dredge for oysters under sail. In Fowey the iconic Troy keel boats race amongst the moorings and there are numerous boats with bowsprits in all the South Coast ports.
Artists and photographers love us because we help bring historic ships and authentic wooden replicas to Cornish shores. By sailing our vessels you can play a part in creating a maritime spectacle that enhances the small ports and quaysides of Cornwall and brings a timeless quality to a remote anchorage or creek.
Based in St Mawes, Tallulah is a replica of 19th Century pilot cutters that were once a vital part of the economy of Falmouth and the Isles of Scilly. Three-masted lugger ‘Grayhound’ is a replica of a 1776 Cornish revenue lugger that began chasing smugglers and then became a privateer. Pilgrim, is an original deep-sea trawler that would have ranged the whole West Country Coast.
Anny and Johanna Lucretia are wooden tall ships under 100ft that were similar to the working trading ships that unloaded cargoes in tiny harbours all round the coast of Europe.

Catamaran Sailing Experience
- By Adventure Cornwall
- August 5, 2008 May 29, 2019
Cool for Cats
But my foray into catamaran sailing in Cornwall was not going to be an ordinary affair. I was going right to the top with a one-to-one, intensive training course with one of the world’s best cat sailors. My teacher was none other than Tom Phipps – the 2006 Junior World Champion and Olympic hopeful for 2012.
As a complete beginner I was not taken out on the Olympic class Tornado, which Tom now sails competitively, but on a slightly smaller, more manageable Dart 18. Even so, the acceleration from the shore was phenomenal as Tom sheeted in the sail to catch the gusty winds. “When people sail on one of these, they generally never look back,” said Tom as we cruised past a couple of dinghy boats which looked almost stationary in comparison.
With its revolutionary design and alternative ‘surfy’ image, it’s little wonder that sailing purists resisted the arrival of the catamarans. In this way it is similar to snowboarding which took decades to find acceptance in ski resorts across the globe. Many sailing clubs still turn their noses up at the ‘new kid on the block’ and don’t allow catamaran sailing on their waters. Luckily in Cornwall we have plenty of water to go around and cats have been a part of the Falmouth sailing scene for years.
I was quite content to just crew and enjoy the awesome ride but Tom was keen for me to take the helm, so we swapped seats and I was suddenly skippering a world champion! Although I’d sailed a few times, this was my first time in a cat and I was not quite prepared for the responsive behaviour of the boat. Tom’s smooth control was replaced by erratic movement and yo-yo style lift and fall as I struggled to get used to multi-tasking a technical boat at high speed.
As the session came to an end, Tom steered us safely back to shore. I’d only had a small taste of what catamaran sailing was all about but I was instantly hooked by the speed and sensation of flying over the water. As a surfer I was also intrigued by the sport’s ‘surfy’ beginnings and its radical reputation. If I was to take up sailing, I would almost certainly cast off in a catamaran. Life on the ocean wave, it seems, is so much cooler for cats.
Elliot Walker sailed with Windsport International at Mylor Harbour. The school offers Catamaran training courses, Cat Conversion courses for dinghy sailors and a Cat Clinic for experienced catamaran sailors.

Skippered Yacht charter in Cornwall, Devon and the Isles of Scilly
Cornwall and Devon are also called the English Riviera, and for good reason, because it is beautiful here. Perhaps it is even more beautiful than the French Riviera, because the hills are greener and the water just as clear and azure blue. It is also a true sailing paradise. Often there is a fresh breeze and a long swell of the Atlantic Ocean. The harbors are all equally pleasant. The locals are friendly and helpful. If the wind allows it, it is possible to sail to the Isles of Scilly. From the UK’s most south-westerly point, it’s a day’s boat out into the ocean before anchoring in arguably Europe’s most remote archipelago.
Newquay is the closest airport.
The ports are fairly close from each other, so that nice day trips can be made to ports like: Dartmouth, Salcombe, Looe, Falmouth and, weather permitting, to the Isles of Scilly.
If you would book a yacht through me and hire me as your charter skipper or sailing instructor , you can enjoy your sailing holiday in a safer and more relaxed way and for those who wish: improve their sailing skills and knowledge.

James Wharram: Lifetime Achievement Award
A special award was presented to James Wharram for a 'Lifetime Achievement' as Pioneer catamaran builder - sailor and multihull designer.
About James Wharram
In the mid 50's, based on his research into ancient Polynesian boat design, James Wharram built the first off-shore Catamaran in Britain and sailed it out into the Atlantic. While the world's yachting community still did not accept such a design as a worthy sea-going vessel, James was landing his 23'6" 'Double Canoe' called TANGAROA in Trinidad in the West Indies.
There he built a second 40' Polynesian style Catamaran, RONGO, and in 1959 sailed it up to New York and back to the UK accompanied by two German women - being the first to sail a catamaran West-to-East across the North Atlantic. These amazing Trans-Atlantic crossings and the follow up book ' Two Girls, Two Catamarans ' have etched the name 'James Wharram' into the annals of yachting history.
Since then, James Wharram has been designing, building and sailing offshore catamarans longer than any other multihull designer. James was a 'hands-on' designer having, over his lifetime, built personally many of the prototype designs. These prototypes were built in the open, in barns, workshops and all the range of building sites available to self-builders, in a variety of climate types from northern European to the Tropics. James was often referred to as a 'Living Legend' or as written in 'Yachting Monthly' in January 2006: "James Wharram is considered by many to be the father of modern multihull cruising."
James’ last achievement was his autobiography published in 2020 as ' People of the Sea ', which he wrote in conjunction with his design/life partner Hanneke Boon. James died in December 2021 at the age of 93. The design business is carried on by his co-designer Hanneke Boon .
Hui Wharram Cornwall Gathering 2024
We are having another Annual Hui! This Hui will mark 70 years since James designed his first Catamaran 'Tangaroa' and we are excited that we will be mooring at Devoran Quay just a 5 minute walk from the Wharram Headquarters based in Cornwall. It would be lovely to celebrate his achievement with all of you.

Pacific Islander History Month
This month of May in America is 'Pacific Islander History Month' and we at James Wharram Designs would like to join in and celebrate alongside them! As you may know, double canoes/catamarans are of ancient Polynesian origin. The modern day catamaran is a direct descendent of these original ocean-going vessels.

James Wharram's Last Ride
On 23 July, a motley fleet of self-built catamarans gathered off Cornwall to give James and Ruth Wharram their final escort. It was a fitting farewell to a legend. The ashes of James and Ruth Wharram were consigned to the sea to be carried by the ebb current out to the open ocean.

James' Eulogy
Hi everyone. I'm Matt. And apart from being truly honoured to be here to help send James on his way to his next adventure, I am here above all as a representative, really, for the many many people worldwide who's lives have been changed, for the better, as a result of James' life work.

A Living Legend Lives No More
We are very sad to announce that on the 14th December James Wharram left this earthly world, joining Ruth, Jutta and his many close friends that departed before him. At 93 years old his spirit has set out on the voyage to sail the oceans of heaven.

People Of The Sea - Compact Edition
The new second edition of the autobiography of James Wharram and Hanneke Boon is now available! This more compact edition at the lower cost of £16 contains all the text and illustrations of the special first edition. An easier size to fit the bookshelf on your boat. A must for all Wharram enthusiasts and other sailors.

Accessible Expedition Dazcat “Artemis”
Built by Multimarine, ‘Artemis’ is a fully wheelchair accessible sailing boat, set for circumnavigation and exploration. Her design incorporates a number of innovations including the radical sail configuration, aimed at enabling singlehanded sailing from the wheelchair and much, much more.
Tom’s enthusiasm for exploration, on and in the water and on land, is apparent in everything he does. Tom is a technical dive instructor, trained in using a re-breather (no bubbles) so he can get closer to marine animals. Artemis is also a dive platform and comes equipped with a compressor and bottle storage. Also a bespoke landing craft type tender that can carry his 4×4 ‘terrain-hopping’ wheelchair/ buggy.
The series of videos on this page show you Artemis at various stages of the build and launch, including the first test sail and an interior tour. Also an early interview with Darren Newton, designer and a pre-launch interview with owner Tom where he talks about the boat and how it has been working with Multimarine.
2023 – Artemis Rounds The Horn
In 2023, Artemis accomplished a groundbreaking milestone by successfully navigating Cape Horn, marking a momentous achievement. Tom and Hannah’s journey was beautifully captured by their friends from the sailing YouTube Channel, Sailing Sweet Ruca .
Following this triumph, Tom and Hannah continued their exhilarating two-handed adventure. This time through the enchanting but rugged, snow and ice covered Patagonia Channel. To add to their increadible 2023 journey, they also later announced their engagement. You can follow their extraordinary expedition on Artemis’ Instagram .

Press & Media
Rugby england profile tom and his plans with ‘artemis’ in this great article….
“Tom Hughes was catastrophically injured playing rugby having just returned as an Army captain from a tour of Afghanistan but in the intervening decade his achievements have been nothing less than extraordinary.
Right now he is vaccinating people against the coronavirus, having completed all the appropriate training, at London’s Science Museum which he found a “wonderfully appropriate location”.
This comes after spending months creating a remarkable 4×4 camper van as a lockdown project. Being designed and kitted out by Tom, it is unique. Having bought it on eBay, he created a self-sufficient vehicle with its own communications system and power. This monster can pump up its own tyres, lift Tom into bed, stow his Terrainhopper all-terrain wheelchair and power its own kitchen. It has souped up suspension, outstanding insulation and can go where no ordinary camper van could ever venture…”

Rugby England visit and interview Tom on pre-departure day
“ Catastrophically injured playing rugby having just returned as an Army captain from a tour of Afghanistan, Tom Hughes has set off on his accessible catamaran Artemis to sail the world, having planned the trip for six years.
Leaving on the tide from Plymouth’s Mayflower Dock seemed appropriate as Tom’s intrepid spirit matches that of the early Pilgrims who set out for the New World. Much of Tom’s trip will, however, see him exploring new worlds under the ocean.
A Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, his exploration on land, coast and beneath the sea, sees him well equipped…”
Rugby England’s video interview with Tom via Twitter
"I’m heading to Gibraltar, then the east coast of Spain, north Africa and then across to the Caribbean. I’ll be away for a couple of years.” @TheRugbyCharity client Tom Hughes set off this morning to sail the world ? His remarkable story ? https://t.co/ouK1TpgrKp pic.twitter.com/86hlw4STYx — England Rugby (@EnglandRugby) September 23, 2021
Artemis will operate as a dive platform capable of long-distance expeditionary cruising with up to eight crew on board. Her design will allow access to shallow waters, thereby extending the potential cruising grounds.

Multimarine’s accessible builds brought us more transatlantic links in the form of Dan and Kika from Sailing Uma.
They first encountered the Impossible Dream, providing accessible sailing for all in the US, then came to visit us here at the Multihull Centre Yard to meet Tom and Artemis…
There will be more from Artemis as her circumnavigation evolves.
You can read more about Tom’s plans on his website or follow progress on his Insta .

YOUR SAILING AREA
The irish sea.
The maritime port of Falmouth is Cornwall’s sailing hub and the fair southwesterly winds make it one of the best places in the country to sail. Join Steady here and after you’ve got acquainted with the boat, sail a short distance to the neighbouring Helford River. A beautiful tranquil spot where ancient woodland rolls into the sea – perfect for your first overnight anchorage.
An early start sees us officially start on our offshore sailing adventure as we set course for Dublin, covering some 300 nautical miles sailing continuously over two days. Once we’ve reached Dublin, we’ll spend a day in port to give us a chance to regain our land legs and explore the city.
As long as the wind and weather permits, the next stop will be the Isle of Man, lying between Ireland and England in the Irish Sea. The plan would be to berth in the fishing port of Peel on the west of the island, staying for a day to give guests the chance to explore – make sure you visit the 140-year smokehouse for the famous and delicious Manx kippers (smoked herring).
The final leg from the Isle of Man to Belfast is about 50 nautical miles. We aim to land here on day 8 to give plenty of time to explore the city but it will depend on how fair the weather is!

Guest berths: 8 Rig: Staysail Ketch
Join husband and wife team, Jan-Willem and Mariëlle Kerkmeer aboard their 1993 Dutch ketch as they take guests on sailing holidays exploring the wonders of the Hebrides in Scotland.
Steady is true to her name with a sturdy steel hull and was originally built as a charter vessel giving a considered layout below decks. Fitted with all the mod-cons and keeping guests comfort at the forefront, she sleeps eight guests in four comfortable twin cabins sharing two bathrooms with a generous shower. Newly re-fitted for 2022, the galley and saloon area live at the heart of the boat with a peninsula galley and plenty of seating alongside the cosy multi-fuel stove.
On deck level there’s a spacious cockpit with a navigation station and more seating, perfect for breakfast and morning coffee as the sun rises. There’s plenty of room on deck too to take in the surrounding views and learn the ropes alongside Jan-Willem and Mariëlle who love sharing their passion for Scotland and sailing with their guests.
Onboard Steady, most guests like to lend a hand with the sailing of this eye-catching vessel, and Jan-Willem and Mariëlle are excellent guides if you do want to get involved. They cater for all abilities and ages, so if you’d rather sit back and relax with a book, then that’s fine too!
Steady’s voyages explore the islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides and St Kilda; an area of unspoilt wilderness and breathtaking beauty in the Western Isles of Scotland. Her sailing adventures give you access to the most captivating and remote hidden secrets of this incredible and beautiful place. As you sail through this stunning marine landscape you will likely be lucky enough to experience close encounters with rare wildlife and have time to soak up the unique and fascinating history and culture of the Hebrides and St Kilda.
Watch this short video of Steady sailing around Oban.
Steady Deck Plan
Steady has been sailed by Dutch husband and wife team Jan-Willem and Marielle for over 10 years. Their love for Scotland, sailing and the natural world are clear for guests to see and they are well versed in all the secret hot spots.
Getting Involved
Steady is true to her name with her simple rig and winch system easy to navigate, providing a great base for guests to learn the ropes. Jan-Willem and Marielle can sail Steady comfortably on their own but they invite and encourage guests to take part in all aspects of sailing. From taking the helm, sorting and setting the sails, basic navigation and rope work, Jan-Willem and Marielle provide a safe and supported environment for guests.
Sleeping and Relaxation
The main deck is well designed with plenty of open spaces and a cockpit for alfresco dining. The undercover deckhouse has 360-degree windows so is great for morning coffee while watching the sunrise or some shelter if the Scottish weather takes a turn!
Below decks give way for a beautifully appointed galley kitchen and generous, comfortable saloon which has been recently re-fitted to a high standard. The fore leads along a small corridor where there are four well-considered twin bunk cabins with a toilet and separate shower for guests. The crew quarters are situated in the stern so have their own facilities.

Lone sailor 20 miles off Cornish coast rescued
A sailor has been rescued after he was unable to control his yacht due to rigging issues 20 miles (32km) off the Cornish coast.
Sennen Cove lifeboat was sent to the sailor at 01:40 GMT on Sunday.
He was north west of Longships Lighthouse and was unable to control the vessel, the RNLI said.
The Sennen lifeboat crew found the yacht and began towing it to Newlyn before swapping the tow with the Penlee lifeboat at 07:00, two miles (3.2km) from the harbour.
The RNLI said the crew had to reconnect the tow twice but arrived safely in the harbour by 11:00.
A spokesperson for the RNLI Penlee Lifeboat Station said: "The yacht skipper was very appreciative of the assistance provided by both lifeboat crews and Falmouth Coastguard.
"He also very much enjoyed a sausage sandwich and coffee at the RNLI’s Penlee Lifeboat Station."
