The mission of Monomoy Yacht Club is to
• encourage and sponsor boating activities and events
• promote the science of seamanship and navigation
• conduct year-round programs and social activities
• build and develop camaraderie among members
• provide and maintain a suitable Club House and facilities for the recreation and use of its members
Membership is drawn primarily from the towns of Chatham and Harwich, both of which have shorelines on both the ocean and the Sound.
The Yacht Club has two fleets - the East Fleet based in waters that open to the Atlantic, and the South Fleet on Nantucket Sound's harbors and inlets.
On-the-water recreation include activities for power boats and sailboats, and kayaking.
Members can participate in both fleets' activities - one day as captain of one's own boat in home waters, and another day as crew or guest in the other fleet's waters.
The social calendar includes events at the Club House, beach parties, and luncheons and dinners at local venues or on chartered vessels.
The Club sponsors boating information and training seminars for members, and an annual Harbor Update that is open to the public.

Consider your boating needs
Think about what type of boating activities you enjoy and what services you need from a yacht club. For example, if you enjoy racing, look for a club with an active racing program. If you need a full-service marina with access to fuel and other amenities, make sure the club has these services available.
Check out the facilities
Visit the club and take a tour of the facilities to see if they meet your needs. Look for clean, well-maintained facilities, ample docking space, and access to amenities like showers and restrooms.
Research the club’s reputation
Look for reviews online and talk to other boaters to get a sense of the club’s reputation. Ask about the club’s social events, membership requirements, and any fees or dues associated with membership.
Consider the location
Choose a club that is convenient for you to get to and from. Consider factors like proximity to your home, work, or other amenities like restaurants and shops.
Look for a community
Joining a yacht club is not just about boating, it’s also about being part of
a community. Look for a club that has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, with opportunities for socializing and getting involved in community events.

History of the Orleans Yacht Club
The Club was chartered, and incorporated, as the Orleans Yacht Club, Inc. on September 22, 1947. Founding members included Harry Snow, Edgar Downs, Helen Smith, Mrs. Norman Downs, Dr. Fred Raddin and Jarrett Blodgett, who became the first Commodore. The express purpose of the Club as stated in the Charter was, and still is, for "the purpose of encouraging yacht building, sailing, promoting interest in yachting and aquatic sports, as well as social interaction among its members."
The first Clubhouse was Edgar Downs' boat house located in the southwest corner of Town Cove. Although the original building has been modified, it is still visible today as a guest cottage. The Clubhouse, in something close to its current configuration, was built on land donated by Henry K. Cummings of Orleans. It has been enlarged over the years and underwent a total kitchen renovation in 2006. For the off-season storage of the Club's motor and sail boats, trailers and other marine items, the OYC rents a storage facility on Commerce Way in Orleans.
Orleans was first settled in 1693 by Pilgrims from the Plymouth Colony. Originally the southern parish of neighboring Eastham, Orleans was officially incorporated in 1797. Orleans is now the largest commercial center on the lower (outer) part of Cape Cod and is situated between Cape Cod Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The town’s Nauset Beach, on the Atlantic, is part of Nauset Spit which is the southern part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. The population of Orleans is approximately 7,000 year round residents and swells to over 22,000 during the summer months. Orleans is 90 miles south of Boston, MA and about the same distance southeast of Providence, RI.
Organization of the OYC
The operation of the Club is directed by the Executive Committee which in turn is led by five Flag Officers: Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Secretary and Treasurer. The Secretary is the Clerk of the corporation. Each Flag Officer is elected annually by the membership; however current policy is that each Flag Officer serves a two year term. Please click here for the list of the Club's current officers.
The Commodore is the "CEO" of the OYC and is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Club, enforcing it's Constitution, By-Laws, Rules and Regulations, presiding at all Executive Committee meetings, the Annual Membership meetings, and any other Special Membership meetings. Additionally, the Commodore shall be a member, ex oficio, of all subordinate committees. The Commodore is one of the five Flag Officers and is the President of the Robert Radtke Memorial Fund, Inc.
The Vice Commodore assists the Commodore when called upon and oversees and guides the Rear Commodore in the performance of his/her duties. In the Commodore's absence, the Vice Commodore undertakes the Commodore's responsibilities. The Vice Commodore oversees the planning and operation of the Junior Sailing Program and is a Director of the Robert Radtke Memorial Fund, Inc.
The Rear Commodore Chair's the Marine Committees and performs any duties related to the procurement, use and maintenance of the Club's Marine property and facilites includes boats, floats, and the mooring field. Additionally, the Rear Commodore serves as a Director of the Robert Radtke Memorial Fund, Inc. and manages its publicity and communications.
The normal progression of the Commodore's office is Rear Commodore, 2 years, Vice Commodore, 2 years, and Commodore, 2 years. This service is followed by an additional two year term as Past Commodore for a total commitment of eight years.
The balance of the Executive Committee includes the following positions: two House Chair(s), two Entertainment Committee Chair(s), the Membership Committee Chair, the Race Committee Chair, a Corinthian Representative, and three Member Directors.
Volunteer Opportunities
Because of its not-for-profit orientation and limited revenue sources, the Club depends heavily on volunteerism by its members and considers an applicant's attitude toward service and likely involvement on committees and work parties in the review process. Volunteer Coordinators distribute members' preferences to the appropriate committee chairs. For a list and description of the various Club committees, please click here .

Cotuit Mosquito Yacht Club
Cape Cod Life / August 2019 / History , Recreation & Activities
Writer : Chris White
Generations Round the Mark
The Cotuit Mosquito Yacht Club continues to make waves while holding fast to tradition
Photos provided by chris white & abby ford.
In 1998, the Nantucket Yacht Club hosted the Cumming Cup, the triple-handed junior regatta of the Southern Massachusetts Sailing Association. The team from Cotuit—three 16-year-old girls and one 15-year-old boy—showed up ready to compete but without any paperwork; their coach was back home on the other side of the Sound, scrambling around to cover the sailing classes they normally taught, and no one had thought to bring a parent. When the race organizers tried to make sense of this apparently feral pack of children, they discovered that the Cotuit Mosquito Yacht Club had not yet paid its annual dues to SMSA. Given the circumstances, they felt there was no choice but to declare the team forfeit, saying something to the effect of: “Sorry, kids, but we cannot allow you to participate unless your commodore sets things straight.”
“Wait,” said Lydia Jackson. “I am the commodore. And this is our treasurer.” At this point, Caitlin Riordan produced the club’s checkbook and asked, “How much do we owe, again?”
Flabbergasted, the well-meaning adults of Nantucket were at a loss. It’s rare enough to find a woman commodore, but one who is also only 16 years old? Unheard of. And besides—liability. Lawyers were everywhere. Riordan recalls, “No one would believe us. But then this super old dude from the Hyannis Yacht Club asked us where we were from. When we said Cotuit, he said he’d vouch for us because he knew our yacht club and ‘it sounded par for the course.’”
Whether his assessment was meant as a slight or a compliment is unclear, but the elder statesman’s advocacy clarified the situation, and the organizers relented. Caitlin Riordan would recount the full events of their adventure in an essay that she wrote for the club’s centennial celebration in 2006, but in brief summary, she says: “What was really funny was that a group of teenagers—and we were the only girls in the regatta that year, by the way—would show up with nothing, no knowledge of the Rhodes 19 we were racing in, no spinnaker skills, yet we still finished in second place. And it was totally normal to us.”

New Cape Coral Yacht Club designs: Most on council like a coastal, Key West vibe
Given three different design options for the new Yacht Club Community Center , most of the Cape Coral City Council is leaning toward a coastal, Key West-flavor architecture.
At a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, the city sought direction from the council on a design direction for the outside of the community building.
"It's a concept, just like we do with anything else, and as we are designing, things may come up that we want to shift and be nimble (on)," said Cape Coral City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn.
James Pankonin with Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, presented the information about the look of the community building.
Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park, which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has been a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations after Hurricane Ian delayed the original plans .
The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.
The city is also preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.
No estimates could be provided for the price of the new building.
"It will really come into how much of certain materials are needed and construction methods," Ilczyszyn said.
The city will have that information once they have 30% of the construction design.
Two public meetings for the designs are planned for April 2 and May 7.
After getting public input, the city will vote to amend its contract with Kimley Horn to approve all these changes.
The plan is to have these changes approved or introduced before the summer hiatus.

New Designs for the Yacht Club building
John Bryant with Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors, a Sarasota-based design firm, said the goal with the new designs was to maintain the experience of the original Yacht Club.
The majority of the council preferred option one.
Design one:
Bryant described the first option as "coastal vernacular" and similar to the park buildings at Lake Kennedy and Yellow Fever Creek.
"So it's sort of informed by the current architectural work in 2024," Bryant said. "Kinda Key West."
Councilmember Dan Sheppard and Mayor John Gunter preferred option one.
Gunter said the design was the most pleasing for him.
Councilmember Keith Long liked option one and said he liked the Key West aesthetic.
Councilmember Tom Hayden liked option one.
Design two:
Option two is more informed by the current Yacht Club and would have a stone base and mid-century feel to it, according to Bryant.
"There's certainly opportunity to kind of further develop this option to have even more of the existing Yacht Club feel, but a different vibe, feel than option one," Bryant said.
He also said option two might be more expressive the closer they try to recreate the aesthetic of the old ballroom building.
Councilmember Jessica Cosden liked design two as it incorporated design elements of the old building though she lamented how similar it looked to the first design.
"I wish we could have done more, but I know it's hard with a two-story building, to make it look the same as a very unique one-story building.
Councilmember Bill Steinke said two would be his choice as well, but was wary of additional maintenance of natural wood products used in the design.
"As long as we can bring that aesthetic and keep the maintenance down, number two would be my choice," Steinke said.
Councilmember Robert Welsh said he could go either way, but he liked the look of two.
Design three:
This would be more contemporary and modern.
"Even with a more contemporary language, you can still have warmth, incorporating some wood elements and stone elements," Bryant said.
None of the council members expressed any favorability for the third design.
Inside the new community center
The Community Center will have an additional 10,000 square feet for a total of 47,000 square feet, a history room to remember the first ballroom building on the first floor, and more rooms for civic and community use on the first floor.
Additionally, the new ballroom has shifted slightly as the balcony area on the second floor has been expanded to wrap around the top of the building.

Reid Higgins passed away peacefully on March 8, 2024 in Vero Beach, Florida. He was born on May 2, 1934 in Exeter, NH to Dr. Donald E. Higgins of Marstons Mills, MA and Mary Reid of Osterville, MA. In 1936 his parents returned to Cape Cod and opened a medical practice in Cotuit where Reid and his older brother David were raised. Reid was a lifelong patriot of Cotuit and passed his love of the village on to his family, fostering the conviction that wherever they may travel, Cotuit is always home.
Reid was a member of the Cotuit Mosquito Yacht Club, where he developed a great love of sailing and the sea. He attended Barnstable public schools, and graduated high school from Tabor Academy. He went on to attend Brown University for a semester, then began a hiatus to serve for three years in the United States Marine Corps, where he achieved the rank of Technical Sargeant. After his honorable discharge he had a brief career as a seaman on the Research Vessel Atlantis out of Woods Hole, MA, and traveled to the Bahamas, Cuba and the Carribbean.
Returning to Brown University in 1956, he married Joan Borton of Cotuit and Cleveland, OH. They lived in Providence, RI until graduation, then in Springfield, MA before settling in Drexel Hill, PA, where they raised four children. Reid held positions with the Atlantic Richfield Company and the United Gas Improvement Company as an assistant director of personnel, then went on to create and head up the personnel department at Wellington Management Company, where he rose to the position of Vice President. He enjoyed a long career at Wellington and transferred to their Boston office in 1975, moving the family to their summer home in Cotuit as year round residents.
In 1983 Reid married Helen 'Len' Sessions of Cotuit and Worcester, MA. The couple lived in Cotuit, Stuart, FL, Woodbridge (England), Mashpee, MA, and Vero Beach, FL, enjoying 41 years together. They loved traveling by land and sea, and had many adventures during those happy years.
Early in life Reid developed a love of wood carving, from model boats and airplanes to artistic figurines, to his true love: carved models of New England shorebirds. Following his retirement from Wellington in 1989 he was able to turn his hobby into a second career, selling his birds through specialty shops and at craft fairs, along with a line of brass and silver belt buckles cast from his carvings. He taught an annual seminar on bird carving in Cotuit. In his later years his focus shifted to watercolor paintings, mostly of nautical and pastoral scenes, and of course shorebirds.
Reid will be best remembered for his salty, irreverent, off-beat and joyous sense of humor, featuring clever plays on words and keen social insight delivered with an infectious sense of fun. He passed his humor on to his children and grandchildren, and delighted in their understanding and perpetuation of it.
Reid is survived by his wife Len, former wife Joanie Higgins, his children and grandchildren: Jeffrey Higgins and Lawrie Peirson of Cotuit and their son Haydn (Devon) of Washington, DC; Christopher and Kyle Higgins of Croton-on-Hudson, NY and their children Sam (Alysia) of Springfield, MA and Kilynne of New York City; Alexander and Lisa Higgins of Mashpee, MA and their children Holly of Montreal, Quebec, Nathaniel (Missy), Elias and Rowan also of Mashpee; Cynthia Higgins Bathgate of Wickham Market, England and her sons Alistair (Ilhan) of London, Jacob (Belle) of Woodbridge, Rory (Tarini) of London, and William (Leah) of Wickham Market.
Perhaps Reid's most endearing quality was his boundless and incurable optimism. All through his life and especially near the end he always displayed a sunny disposition and believed that things would work out for the best, and was able to pass that certainty on to those around him. He was widely loved and enjoyed a rich social life wherever he lived.
Reid always said he hoped to return to life as a herring gull, his chief carving inspiration. He would then be free to spend his days fishing and inhabiting Cotuit's Sampsons Island, stealthily raiding picnics and dive bombing beachcombers. Next time you're at the island, look for a gull with a mischievous grin and a slightly wild glint in its eye....
A celebration of Reid's life will be held on August 3, 2024 at 1PM in the Cotuit Federated Church, Cotuit, MA

The first option had a “Key West, old Florida” architectural style. The second option was based on the existing yacht club building, and the third option was a contemporary architectural design.
Some people in Cape Coral raised concerns about the parking garage and financing the project.
