yachts over 300 feet

  • Lurssen Yachts

On the 5th April 2013 Lürssen, the leading shipyard for large luxury yacht building, launched the 180m yacht AZZAM - the largest motor yacht in the world. The sleek and elegant superyacht features exterior design by Nauta Design.

Fulk Al Salamah

  • Mariotti Yachts

This 164-metre (538ft) superyacht was built in Italy by Mariotti Yachts and now sits in the Omani capital as part of the royal fleet. The Italian built superyacht is currently the second largest privately owned yacht in the world, after Lurssen's Azzam.

  • Blohm + Voss

Roman Abramovich's yacht Eclipse has received a huge amount of industry attention, not just for its size but for the celebrity of its owner. Eclipse is the largest and most expensive superyacht ever built. When initially ordered she was estimated to cost approximately £330million, by the time she was delivered however, her overall costs were closer to the £1billion mark due to the extra luxury fittings and security measures required by her owner. With a crew of up to 60, Eclipse is a giant of the sea. She was the fourth superyacht comissioned by Abramovich.

  • Platinum Yachts

This magnificent yacht was originally commissioned by Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei. Construction was suspended in 1998 and the vessel left unfinished until HH Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum secured the rumoured $300 million project. Platinum Yachts took the mega yacht to completion and in 2006 launched Dubai to become the world’s largest private yacht. Today however, Dubai is the second largest privately owned yacht in the world.

Launched in February 2022, Project Blue is Lurssen's latest secretive yacht project. With little revealed about her specifications and designers, her expansive size was confirmed by the German shipyard following her launch: an incredible 160m. Project Blue will be Lurssen's second-largest superyacht, and is due to be delivered in 2023. She was recently spotted in Bremerhaven, Germany, making her way out to sea for her maiden sea trial. She is expected to have a beam of 21m, and a gross tonnage of 15,320 GT. Her other specifications are currently unknown.

Originally known as Project Omar, the 156 metre superyacht Dilbar was launched in 2016 after over 4 years of construction. A favourite with yachtspotters worldwide, Dilbar is considered the largest superyacht in the world by volume.

Like most royal superyachts, little is known about Al Said, a giant mega yacht formerly codenamed "Project Sunflower". She was delivered to the Sultan of Oman in 2008 as a replacement for a smaller mega yacht of the same name. At a stunning 155m, Al Said consists of six large decks and features striking exterior and interior design by Espen Oeino International, the same company that designed the stunning 127m mega yacht Octopus. According to reports, Al Said is said to accommodate as many as 70 guests and 154 professional crew, as well as featuring a concert room capable of accommodating a 50 piece orchestra.

When construction of A+ (formerly named Topaz) first began she was forecast to be the 4th largest yacht in the world and to measure approximately 147m (482’3’’ft). Having left her floating shed at the Lürssen shipyard located in Bremen, Germany, she is now ready to claim that mantle and undergo the final phases of construction.

Prince Abdulaziz

  • Helsingor Vaerft

As one of the yachts of the Saudi Royal Family, Prince Abdulaziz is used to conduct official business as well as for pleasure. The largest yacht built in the 20th century, the interior alone took 15 months to complete. Originally built for the late King Fahd of Saudi Arabia who named the yacht after his son, it is now owned by his brother Abddullah.

Very little is known about Lurssen's mysterious superyacht OPERA. At 146m, the superyacht will be the sixth largest yacht Lurssen has built at the time of her launch in September 2022. OPERA was first spotted in May 2021 when she transported to the yard's Bremen outfitting facilities in Germany.

El Mahrousa

  • Samuda Bros.

This Egyptian presidential yacht is not only one of the world’s largest but also one of the oldest. Built in 1865 in London, the yacht was intended for the King of Egypt. Originally named Mahroussa, El Horriya was extended in 1872 and again in 1905.  Nowadays she is berthed in Alexandria and is listed as a training ship by the Egyptian Navy.

Developed by German shipyard Lürssen, construction of Project Luminance is underway at their facilities near Lemwerder. Due to enter the esteemed list of the Top 10 largest superyachts in the world, information about the 145m superyacht is limited at this moment in time. Lürssen are world-famous for their incredible innovations and their capacity to build extremely large mega yachts filled with numerous features. Photos that have been captured of the boat indicate that she will have considerable deck space with plenty of room left over indoors to be packed out with luxury.

SAILING YACHT A

Sailing Yacht A is a highly unique vessel, with an LOA of 142.81m. She is one of the world’s largest and the most advanced superyachts with a number of unique features, including an underwater observation pod, hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system and premium navigation systems. Her three masts are the tallest and most highly loaded freestanding composite structures in the world. Her futuristic design was created by Philippe Starck, her smooth silver-metallic surfaces challenging the expectations of conventional aesthetics.

As one of the most well-known builders of Top 100 yachts, Lurssen's NORD (formerly Opus and Redwood) has been highly anticipated as one of the largest ever to launch from the German yard. Also the largest project set to launch in 2020, at 142m, she will accommodate up to 36 guests in 20 cabins and was designed by Nuvolari Lenard.

  • ADMShipyards

The 141m superyacht Swift141, now christened 'Yas', was successfully launched by ADMShipyards in November 2011; entering the record books as both the largest launch of 2011 and most significant superyacht in recent history. ADMShipyards, members of Privinvest, has proudly announced the launch of their first superyacht. At 141 meters, this stunning private yacht ranks as the sixth largest superyacht in the world.

  • Lloyd Werft

Project Solaris is the revolutionary explorer yacht built by German masters of engineering Lloyd Werft. Topping off the yard's record for ultra large luxury yacht build, Project Solaris is an estimated 139m+ explorer yacht at the German giant's shed.

Scheherezade

As with most yachts in construction at Lurssen, little is known about this 140m project. We do not yet know the designer or architect, but she has been spotted moving around the build-hall. Her sightings have lead yacht spotters on the docks of the yard to aptly name her 'Project Lightning.' We hope to see her launch towards the end of 2019.

Ocean Victory

  • Fincantieri Yachts

The largest yacht ever built in Italy and one of the ten largest in the world, Fincantieri has announced the successful delivery of Project Victory - a 140 metre superyacht launched in 2014 - under the official name of Ocean Victory.

Code named as Mipos (short for Mission Possible) during her construction, Al Salamah belongs to Saudi Arabian Defence Minister Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz. Kept a great secret, rumours tell that she has over 80 rooms, a helipad, and an indoor swimming pool complete with glass roof. A real working wonder, this yacht was completed in 1999 after only two years.

Owned by media bigwig David Geffen, Rising Sun is rumoured to have been commissioned by Ellison specifically to be larger than Paul Allen’s Octopus. This 2004 yacht is spread over five decks and is equipped with everything from Jacuzzi bathrooms and wine cellars to a top deck basketball court.

Enter the Giga-Yacht

  • By Dudley Dawson
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

What in blue blazers is going on in the yachting world? Big yachts getting bigger-so big they’re calving submarines. Big yachts looking like small yachts-enormous versions of what are essentially open and express cruisers. Yards and builders getting bigger. Heck, even owners getting bigger, with larger-than-life characters: American and Arab and Russian and Chinese. (Which of course means the bodyguards are getting bigger, too.) Wherever you look today, yachts are straining to escape the bounds of gravity and even at times credibility, and as we try to put our arms around these trends, the word that comes to mind isn’t super, or mega…but giga.

We have entered the era of the gigayacht. And here are the trends to prove it.

Supersize It!

Big yachts are getting bigger. The increase in length is an easy statistic to use, but it doesn’t tell the story by far. When you go from 150 feet to 300 feet, it is not twice the yacht, but closer to six times as large in terms of interior volume, tonnage, complexity and cost. As I stood in Oceanco’s yard a few years ago, gazing at the 312-foot Al Mirqab, one of the builder’s staff could not help making the obvious comparison with two smaller superyachts floating alongside. “How’d you like to be the owner of one of those, and arrive to see your new 170-footer looking like a runabout?”

The last year or two has seen several launches of yachts that would dwarf Al Mirqab, including Octopus (410 feet) and Pelorus (377 feet), both from Lürssen. Although recent months have been short on announcements of such megamonster deliveries, they have not gone away. Often bound by draconian secrecy clauses, the builders refuse to talk about these supersized superyachts, but a few clues escape.

Lürssen recently delivered Northern Star (210 feet) and Air (300 feet), and a 453-footer is reported from the yard this year as well. (For more on Northern Star, see this month’s Superyacht Report.) Besides her length, Air is newsworthy for her propulsion system. With no gearing, shafts or rudders, she is powered by eight diesel generators. The generators supply electrical power to a pair of electric motors directly driving propellers. The motors are encased outside the hull in watertight pods that rotate for steering, hence azimuthing, giving rise to the name: Azipods. The advent of such systems, and the technical reasoning behind them, was foretold by Yachting in our June, 2001 issue (“The Pod Squad”); expect to see more of them.

Germany doesn’t have a complete monopoly on the large ladies, but it certainly seems to be in the lead. In addition to the Lürssen deliveries, both Blohm + Voss and HDW have delivered significant yachts in the past and are actively promoting new projects at this time. Blohm + Voss launched the 344-foot Lady Moura in 1991 and, with Lürssen, the 525-foot Golden Star/ Platinum more recently. Latest information from Blohm + Voss shows their Project M-147, a 482-foot yacht that carries a helicopter topside, a drydock for the tender at the stern and a submarine garage integrated into the hull. Design is by Hermidas Atabeyki.

HDW grabbed the headlines several years ago with the 452-foot Mipos, now Al Salamah. A more recent delivery is the 303-foot Tatoosh, owned by Paul Allen as he worked his way up another 100 feet to Octopus. More recent information from HDW shows Crystal Ball, a strikingly modern 460-footer with a glass-enclosed superstructure. She is from the boards at francisdesign.

In addition to the German yards, two of Holland’s builders have toyed with the big time. Amels Holland has built yachts into the 250-foot range and with its huge Schelde yard, a former naval shipyard, was negotiating at one point for a 525-foot yacht. Feadship, amid strict secrecy, delivered the 282-foot Ecstasea last year and is busy completing facilities and hiring workers for a third yard intended for even larger yachts.

While U.S. builders are not yet knocking at the door with 300- and 400-footers, they are closing in on 200 feet. Trinity Yachts launched the 180-foot Mia Elise this spring, the largest steel-hulled displacement yacht built in North America in the past 75 years. Palmer Johnson’s La Baronessa, launched several years ago, was 195 feet, and even the fiberglass builders, including Delta Marine and Christensen Yachts, have grown beyond 150 feet recently, continuing to push the limits of the material.

Let’s drop the top and party…

Not only are big yachts getting bigger, smaller ones are getting bigger, too, while keeping that sportboat feel. Open day boats and express cruisers have crept past 100 feet with 108-foot models from both San Lorenzo and Sunseeker. Not content with that, Pershing and Riva have pushed upward to 115 feet with fiberglass yachts and Codecasa with aluminum models, last year’s Maria Carla being the first issue with a second delivered this spring.

More traditional motoryachts, large and small, are opening up to the great outdoors as well, with sliding and convertible tops and glass aft bulkheads that retract to create huge alfresco areas; many are adopting sleek superstructure lines that mimic the day boats. The Azimut 116, Palmer Johnson’s 120-foot Cover Drive and Baglietto’s 135-foot Just Cavalli are but three examples.

…But party sensibly

While yachting has the reputation of a relatively carefree recreational pastime, security concerns cannot be overlooked. Royal yachts have long had various levels of protection quietly built into them. One, to my personal knowledge, has a very secure area deep within the hull that quarters a couple-dozen commandos, very serious-looking individuals who constantly monitor a bulkhead full of video screens and alarm panels, ready to react to any threat. Another has been rumored to carry SAM missiles. Most far-out claim (in Vanity Fair, so add salt): that Paul Allen was offered torpedoes on Octopus, but declined.

Private yachtsmen with lesser concerns nevertheless are facing a changing reality and adding increasingly sophisticated monitoring and alarm systems. It is not unusual for crew members to take training in defensive skills, or even for a crew cabin, or perhaps the “nanny cabin” adjacent to the owner’s suite, to be occupied by a bodyguard. At least one super-sailboat has been built with bullet-resistant glass and with Kevlar laminated into the deckhouse, not for structural strength but for ballistic protection. Safes and gun lockers are not new, but they are becoming more common, and while we’ve not been able to confirm it, there are rumors of virtually impenetrable “safe rooms” aboard some superyachts.

The Russians are coming, and the Chinese, too

Russians are getting into yachting in a big way. Ecstasea, the 282-foot Feadship, is the third smallest-yes, “smallest”-yacht owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. The other two are Le Grand Bleu, a 354-footer originally built for John McCaw by Bremer Vulkan, and Pelorus, the 377-foot Lürssen. Other Russian oil barons have also dabbled in the realm of megayachts, but changes in both the oil and yacht markets and in the domestic political situation leave the realities of some current ownerships a bit muddled.

At the lower end of the size range, from more modest superyachts on down to 40-footers, sales are booming in Russia. Most of the early yachts were imported, but now domestic shipyards are starting to take up the slack. Marinas are being developed to moor the yachts and there is at least one Russian-produced yachting magazine to satisfy the growing demand for news and information.

Not to be outdone, and spurred by a booming economy, the Chinese are taking an increasing interest in yachting. Far East builders such as Cheoy Lee have established new yards in mainland China, but it is not only the builders that are involved. While Chinese ownership of superyachts is limited, they have taken an interest, much like the Russians, in chartering on both an individual and a corporate basis. One broker recently reported what is thought to be a first: a Chinese company chartering a superyacht to entertain clients in Cannes.

Love means never leaving a friend ashore

The Russians and Chinese are only the latest converts to the joys of chartering, and the selection of yachts available is broader and more numerous than ever. Almost all of the new superyachts are built to MCA safety standards in order to qualify for charter service, whether initially intended for that service or not. International treaties limit the number of charter guests to 12 in many cases, but with the supersizing of yachts, it’s a limit that does not enable the owner to take full advantage of the yacht’s interior volume. To overcome that restriction, some new charter yachts are being built to tougher passenger ship standards and are carrying up to 36 guests. That’s a boatload.

Built by Greece’s Neorion Shipyard to a detailed specification by Liveras Yachts, and with design by Alpha Marine and H. Poulias, the 280-foot Annaliese was delivered last year in time for the summer Olympics. Her sister Alysia was completed this year, and another 36-passenger charter yacht for Liveras, the 295-foot Mia, will be completed in 2007. With the enthusiastic response they have enjoyed toward the first two yachts, the company is busy working on plans for a 351-footer, Eleni D.

Alysia has a 1,300-square-foot master suite, plus an adjoining twin-berth stateroom for children or personal staff, on a private owner’s deck. A VIP stateroom is situated on the bridgedeck, as is a twin-berth special-needs cabin that has wide doors and a special shower room. Ten additional guest staterooms are on the main deck, and four more are located on the upper deck. Whether dining inside or out, all 36 guests can be seated at once.

Oh, cabaña boy…

The level of amenities aboard Alysia, equaling those of the world’s best resorts, is perhaps a step above many yachts, but such pampering is becoming more common. Nanny cabins and owner offices are appearing on many superyachts, as are wine cellars, spas and gymnasiums. Entertainment systems often allow on-demand viewing for each stateroom from a selection of hundreds of movies, and audio libraries can be customized to each guest’s preferences.

Alysia still goes them one better, though, and a peek at her crew list gives a clue. In addition to the captain, mates and engineers, she carries nine in the steward’s department, a chef plus three in the galley, a nurse, a masseuse, a beauty therapist and two laundry staff. Her wine cellar has a capacity of 500 bottles, and is temperature and humidity controlled. Her laundry is open around the clock. She has no mere gym, but rather a health center with a multi-gym, treadmill, rowing and cycling machines, and free weights. For guests who are a bit out of shape, the post-relaxation/treatment areas-one for men and one for women-each include a sauna, steam room, cold plunge pool, whirlpool spa and shower. There’s also a beauty salon, facial/body treatment area and massage room. For guests who are seriously out of shape but can’t resist the gym anyway, Alysia offers her twin-berth medical suite with a nurse on call 24 hours a day.

All that pampering is nearly irresistible, but for those who just can’t leave the working world behind, she has a business center on the bridgedeck with an internal LAN for connecting computers and peripherals. There’s a digital PBX phone system with ISDN capability, with a total of 80 lines, five of which are satellite ship-to-shore connections via Inmarsat.

Sailboats are getting bigger, too, and a lot more sophisticated. Wally Yachts just signed a 100-foot version of their innovative Y3K, and has a 143-footer in the works, too. Vitters will soon be delivering the 180-foot Adele. The typographically challenged MITseaAH, a 157-footer built by Pendennis, has a variable-geometry hull bottom that allows her to plane under power. Mirabella, 247 feet and built by VT Shipbuilding, carries all her sail in a sloop configuration with the world’s tallest mast. Athena, a classically styled three-masted schooner, is at 295 feet the world’s largest private sailing yacht since the Great Depression; the Royal Huisman beauty cannot be sailed without her complex and powerful hydraulic sailhandling system. To be launched later this year is Perini Navi’s 286-foot Maltese Falcon. She will definitely be an attention grabber with her DynaRig sail plan, looking something akin to a Star Wars square-rigger.

From a Hybrid Gigayacht to a Go-Fast Tender, Here Are the Best Vessels of the Year

The seven seas have never looked so inviting..

Robb Report's Best Concept Boat 2019, Sinot

From submarine exploration to over-the-top interiors, this year’s Best of the Best marine winners include vessels as varied as a 48-foot go-fast tender with oodles of fold-out deck space to a 357-foot award-winning hybrid gigayacht with opulent staterooms—and everything in between. We applaud an interior that, at the owner’s request, emulates Italy’s art nouveau rendition, Stile Liberty, with exacting execution, as well as a semi-custom model that comes with designer furniture and sculptures in place. In our 200- to 300-foot category, we recognize an efficient and fast yacht that employs a historically commercial-and military-vessel technology that improves comfort while under way, as well as a low-key and tasteful explorer yacht built for family fun.

With larger and longer, faster and more efficient yachts leading the global fleet, we give a nod to the best examples as we see them.

MOTOR YACHT OVER 300 FEET: Oceanco Bravo Eugenia

Robb Report's Best Motor Yacht Over 300 Feet 2019, Oceanco Bravo Eugenia

Oceanco Bravo Eugenia  Francisco Martinez

Following through on last year’s Best of the Best trend of going green, Dutch shipyard Oceanco delivered the 357-foot, four-deck Bravo Eugenia to Gene and Jerry Jones, owners of the Dallas Cowboys, in December. This lean and mean yacht with naval architecture and engineering by UK-based Lateral Naval Architects, sporty exterior design by Nuvolari Lenard of Venice and elegant interior by Reymond Langton, also in the UK, receives Best of the Best honors for its LIFE-designed hull (lengthened, innovative, fuel-efficient and eco-friendly), a new ethos for Oceanco. Bravo Eugenia ’s long, slender hull means less drag, making for a lower propulsion-power need (read: efficiency), and its single-story engine room (the big yachts usually require at least two levels) provides space for the fun stuff—staterooms, spas, beach clubs.

Besides its efficient architecture, Bravo Eugenia offers up two helipads—one on the foredeck and one on the aft deck—a large tender garage with tons of space for a flotilla of water toys, and an onboard spa with massage room, plunge pool, rain shower, steam room and sauna. Oh, don’t forget the gym on the lower deck, which is part of the must-have beach club.

Reymond Langton’s interior decor exudes contemporary elegance, featuring light maple wood and white pearl lacquer with contrasting accents of walnut and ebony. Bravo Eugenia provides accommodations for 14 guests and 30 crew.

CONCEPT: Sinot Art of Life

Robb Report's Best Concept Marine 2019, Sinot Art of Life

Sinot Art of Life  Courtesy of Sinot

There’s something disarmingly divine about Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design’s Art of Life concept. The 377-foot motor yacht is long, simple and sleek. While its two-tier superstructure looks more like an open, tropical beach house than a gigayacht, the sloped stern takes cues from a sailing superyacht . The unassuming elegance of the yacht’s “monolithic” shape, as designer Sander Sinot calls it, comes from the open aft and foredecks, bridge deck and unassuming lines. Those features distinguish the vessel from more ostentatious gigayachts. Meanwhile, its inner beauty is the connection with the outdoors: Large sliding panels provide ocean views from the formal dining area, and the stern’s floor-to-ceiling windows are one-of-a-kind in the world of yachting. The owner’s stateroom also has a unique private lounge that traverses the main and upper decks, while the wellness center offers a Roman-style bath, massage area, sauna and loose sofas. And of course, Art of Life’s indoor cinema includes a retractable screen that covers an entire wall. The concept is a work of exceptional beauty.

SAILING YACHT: Royal Huisman Aquarius

Robb Report's Best Sailing Yacht 2019, the Royal Huisman Aquarius

Royal Huisman Aquarius  Carlo Baroncini/Foto Arcobalen

The owner of Aquarius assembled the dream team of Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman , Dykstra Naval Architects in the Netherlands and UK-based Mark Whiteley Design to create this singular 184-foot sailing superyacht. Designed as a world cruiser that will participate in superyacht regattas, the yacht’s classic exterior has an elegant, muscular look, bolstered by carbon-fiber masts and rigging and extensive sail plans. The downwind sail plan, which gives the boat a majestic presence, measures a staggering 32,292 square feet. To minimize manpower, the yacht has remote units that raise and lower the sails with the push of a button.

MOTOR YACHT 200 TO 300 FEET: Benetti Spectre

Benetti Spectre superyacht best of the best

Benetti Spectre  Courtesy of Benetti

When landlubbers dream of superyachts, this is the kind of boat they have in mind. Launched and delivered last year, the five-deck, 227-foot S pectre is the third Benetti yacht for John and Jeanette Staluppi in a line of James Bond–named vessels. Besides the necessary pool, spa, gym, helipad and elevator, Spectre is the “first yacht of this size equipped with a ride control system, an innovative hull by Mulder and much more,” says Dario Schiavo at Benetti. Schiavo is referring to the Naiad Dynamics Ride Control System designed to improve comfort and performance at sea for navy and commercial vessels. With the collaboration of Dutch firm Mulder Design, Spectre is the first monohull superyacht to use the technology. The system significantly improves cruising stability and onboard comfort.

In addition to providing a smooth ride, the naval architecture includes Mulder’s high-speed cruising hull, which Frank Mulder says will not only be about 30 percent faster than “normal” displacement yachts with a similar engine configuration, but will also reduce fuel consumption at long-range speeds. The yacht does in fact deliver a speedy 21.2 knots and a range of 6,500 nautical miles at a speed of 12 knots.

Giorgio M. Cassetta created Spectre ’s exterior lines, giving it a long forefoot, with a hint of classic sports car. The interiors, crafted by the Benetti team, include four—yep, four—wine cellars. A spiral staircase and glass elevator grace the lobby, while six cabins sleep 12 guests and nine more sleep 14 crew.

PERIOD INTERIOR: CRN Latona

Robb Report's Best Period Interior 2019, CRN Latona

CRN Latona  Courtesy of CRN

The pale turquoise hull color gives the whole theme away. The owners of the CRN -built Latona requested a Liberty-style (or Italian art nouveau) motif for the whole 164-foot five-deck vessel, which launched in 2018. Italian studio Zuccon International Project and the CRN interior design team accepted the challenge, and the result was a to-the-T, no-detail-left-untended, fin-de-siècle-Italy yacht, with all the modern amenities and tech, including a premium entertainment system.

True to the Liberty style, which draws on elements such as repeated patterns, floral themes, fluid shapes, organic lines and rounded forms, the owner chose a sinuous dark-brown embroidery line found across all decks. The design travels along both marble and carpeted floors as well as on furniture in the main saloon and on the curved handrail of the internal staircase and the chandelier in the dining area— essentially tying the whole theme together.

The yacht accommodates 10 guests in five staterooms, plus cabins for a total of nine crew members.

MOTOR YACHT 100 TO 200 FEET: CBI Navi Stella di Mare

Robb Report's Best Motor Yacht 100 to 200 Feet, the CBI Navi Stella di Mare

CBI Navi Stella di Mare  Courtesy of CBI Navi

Stella di Mare , the 131-foot explorer yacht by Italian shipyard CBI Navi , is built for long, autonomous periods at sea. The designers included serious storage, refrigeration and freezer units for far-flung adventures. This star of the sea distinguishes itself, however, with an 800-bottle, climate-controlled wine cellar. The owner, who has a large, extended family, wanted to ensure that a two-week voyage many miles from the nearest port didn’t compromise the culinary experience.

Beyond the expedition infrastructure, Fossati Design Bureau also created a nautical look to the interior that was contemporary without being flashy. Walnut, mahogany and wenge provide a classic look, but leather and burnished bronze give a modern appeal. The designers commissioned globe-maker Bellerby & Co. to create a globe near bookshelves in the window of the main saloon, with another hand-painted map of the world behind the dining table. The children’s staterooms have their favorite cartoon characters on the walls. Outside, the boat’s versatile sundeck works as a sunning area or can be set up as a gym, and there’s space for a grill and an alfresco dining area. There is even a nook with a couple of seats on the front of the radar arch that allows for exceptional water views.

SUBMERSIBLE: Triton Hadal Exploration System

Robb Report's Best Submersible, the Triton Hadal Exploration System

Triton Hadal Exploration System  Courtesy of Triton

Costing $48.7 million, the Triton 36000/2 Hadal Exploration System is actually two vessels, comprising the research boat DSSV Pressure Drop and Triton submersible Limiting Factor . The dynamic duo was funded by Victor Vescovo for his Five Deeps Expedition, which is exploring the deepest, most unexplored places in the world’s five oceans. Limiting Factor is Triton’s first full-ocean-depth model, which is capable of carrying two submariners into the oceans’ hadal zones ( hadal derives from Hades, the Greek mythological underworld) that range to 36,000 feet below sea level. The sub is significantly lighter than previous deep-diving vehicles and features 10 electric thrusters to enhance sub-surface maneuverability. Last December, Five Deeps completed its Atlantic dive in the Puerto Rico Trench (27,480-foot depth); the expedition dove the South Sandwich Trench in Antarctica (24,390 feet) in February; and in April, it explored the Java Trench in the Indian Ocean (23,596 feet). Beyond ocean exploration, Five Deeps will be hosting 50 scientific missions into the lands around those remote locations.

YACHT-SUPPORT VESSEL Damen  Power Play

Damen Power Play

Damen Power Play  Coen de Jong

The shadow-vessel market has matured in the last decade, with examples like this boat from Damen Yacht Support pushing the category forward. The 182-foot Power Play has all the amenities to support the owner’s more traditional mother-ship yacht, including a 2,600-square-foot open deck and a 12-ton deck crane to hoist toys, tenders and submersibles. The yacht also has a 540-square-foot adventure area that converts to a dive center on expeditions and a rare three staterooms for six guests, an evolutionary step forward for the shadow-boat category. That means owners’ parties can stay aboard for autonomous expeditions into distant waters, given the vessel’s 5,000-mile range. It can also operate in zero-discharge zones where other yachts are banned. The crew quarters can hold seven people, with additional berths for four other staff, such as pilots, security guards or guides. Power Play could be the ultimate explorer yacht for adventurous owners, not just a vessel that lurks in the shadows.

150 TO 200 FEET: Heesen Irisha

Heesen Irisha

Heesen Irisha  Dick Holthuis

The great outdoors on yachts is typically all about the sea. But Heesen ’s 167-foot Irisha took a more residential approach to the outside experience, putting a winter garden (no plants in sight) in place of the usual main saloon. The indoor/outdoor space has large windows and sliding-glass doors that open on three sides and allow for flow between the boat’s aft-deck seating area and the “garden,” kitted out with beachy-cool furniture and floor coverings. The space allows for the adjacent dining table to expand from 14 settings to its full 22-seat magnificence, catering to the owner’s request for a fast day boat with an emphasis on fine dining.

London studio Harrison Eidsgaard helmed the design, creating an efficient full-aluminum, semi-displacement motor yacht reminiscent of a fighter jet, with clean exterior lines, double-curved glazed glass and a raised wheelhouse. Partner Peder Eidsgaard customized Heesen’s award-winning 5000 Aluminum class engineering platform and gave Irisha a two-tone paint job that changes from metallic blue to dark olive-green hues in sunlight.

Powered by two MTU 16V 4000 M93L diesel engines, the boat clocked a top speed of 26.1 knots during sea trials and has a transatlantic range of more than 3,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 11 knots.

Its interior lines, design and decor sync in neutral palettes and sophisticated light settings for a seamless flow from room to serene room. Irisha accommodates 10 guests in five staterooms, including a full-beam main- deck owner’s suite, and two double and two twin guest cabins down below. Crew quarters can house nine. Also on the lower deck is a split-level tender garage that becomes a beach-club area with a sauna and bathroom.

COMEBACK: Oyster Yachts

Oyster Yachts

Oyster Yachts  Courtesy of Oyster Yachts

Last year, in the middle of the two-year Oyster World Rally, Oyster Yachts suddenly shut its doors, stranding in Australia 18 of its sailing yachts and their crews, as well as all of the British company’s maintenance agreements. After the brand scrambled for a financial life preserver, Oyster yacht owner (of Lush) Richard Hadida, cofounder of Evolution Gaming, jumped in and used his own assets to purchase and salvage the neglected shipyard. A year later, at the culmination of that same rally in April and the kickoff of the Oyster Antigua Regatta, I was witness to the earnest dedication of the new Oyster executive team, quite a few of the brand’s boat owners, their families and the warmth and enthusiasm that all brought to the docks. While Oyster has been busy finishing and delivering the yachts that were in build—whose orders seemed in danger of going unmet—the storied yard introduced a new model in May, the Oyster 565. The determination and personal financial commitment to keeping this family of yachts and yacht owners together deserves recognition.

TENDER: Anvera 48

Anvera 48

Anvera 48  Alessandro Guerrieri

With so many fresh designs, the tender category is usually difficult to judge. This year’s Best of the Best winner, the Anvera 48 , was an easy choice because it combined advanced technology, space-age looks and an offshore hull. The foldout sides, which turn the stern into the ultimate beach club, are true advances in technology and measure 215 square feet. The 48 also has a highly impressive top-end speed of 55 knots. Other noteworthy features: a large helm area, a dining table in the center and three aft-facing lounge seats. The carbon-fiber hard top floats back over these areas without external supports, adding to the aesthetic appeal. Below, there is a large cabin in the foredeck, along with a full bathroom. The lightweight construction gives the boat one of the best power-weight ratios in its size, which means a smaller engine without sacrificing speed or fuel efficiency.

MOTOR YACHT UNDER 100 FEET: Azimut Grande 25 Metri

Azimut Grande 25 Metri

Azimut Grande 25 Metri  Courtesy of Azimut

The launch of the Grande 25 Metri last year was the culmination of Italian builder Azimut ’s Metri series. This new boat shares the carbon-fiber superstructure of its sister ships, the 32 and 35 Metris, with exterior designs by Italian yacht architect Stefano Righini. The 87-footer is instantly recognizable as an Azimut by its long, aggressive forefoot, curving saloon windows and sleek hull. The distinctive beauty of the Metri series is highlighted by how the interiors—curved, soft and often whimsical—by acclaimed designer Achille Salvagni contrast with the strong masculine lines of Righini’s exterior. Rome-based Salvagni designed the light fixtures and furniture, even placing sculpture in bulkhead nooks. He also did away with the usual dividing line between saloon and formal dining room. In the large, open-plan saloon, the owner simply pushes a button and a dining table rises from the floor between sofas, creating an instant eatery. The yacht has four staterooms for the owners and guests, with additional quarters for crew.

Mega Yachts for Sale Worldwide

Mega yachts for sale worldwide, like M/Y NATITA

A mega yacht is generally understood to be a large superyacht that represents the absolute pinnacle of luxury yachting. View all mega yachts for sale worldwide here , including images and full specifications.

Mega yachts for sale like NATITA always have incredible sun decks and Jacuzzis

Exact definitions of mega yachts vary tremendously, although some believe that around 200 feet to be the starting size for a mega yacht for sale. Here in the United States however, the words ‘mega yacht’ is often used interchangeably with the words ‘super yacht’, which is used to refer to any privately owned-yacht over 80 feet in length.

Mega yachts for sale like NATITA always have wellness centers

Cinemas, helipads, spas, gyms and private owner’s decks with balconies are often standard fixtures on the larger mega yachts for sale – like the photos here show of yacht for sale NATITA – due to their luxury of size.

The biggest mega yachts will extend to basketball courts, large swimming pools, magnificent beach clubs and float-in tender garages to house sailboats, high-speed chase boats and even submarines.

Mega yachts for sale like NATITA always have cinema movie theatres

One of the most famous features of a mega yacht was the (reported) missile shield on Roman Abramovich’s yacht Eclipse, which held the title of the largest private yacht on earth at 522 feet until it was ‘eclipsed’ by Azzam, a Lurssen mega yacht measuring in at a staggering 590 feet.

Mega yachts for sale like NATITA always have palatial staterooms

The palatial accommodations on board a mega yacht are superb for entertaining groups and hosting extended families. Mega yachts generally carry large crews to offer a simply spectacular level of service, with guest-to-crew ratios only dreamt of in elite hotels.

Mega yachts for sale like NATITA always have various palatial salons

Because mega yachts over 200 foot are such extraordinary machines, there are a limited number of them afloat, although as the race for the biggest boat continues between the oligarchs we can expect this number to grow.

As of October 2015, there were only 200 yachts in the world larger than 213 foot. Given their rarity and ultimate exclusivity, the opportunity of purchasing a large mega yacht for sale does not appear often.

It’s useful, however, to know that the term ‘mega yacht’ is not a universally- recognized term and its exact meaning is debated, although it has gained common currency in the United States and in mainstream media around the world.

As mentioned, in the United States you will often find the words ‘mega yacht for sale’ being used interchangeably with the words ‘super yacht for sale’, yet in European yachting circles, the word super yacht is generally still preferred.  ‘Giga yacht’, meanwhile, is a relatively new word on the scene, often used to describe yachts over 100 meters, or 328 feet – but let’s not muddy the waters any further!

Regardless of what you call it, a mega yacht for sale is an investment offering an almost unbelievable level of luxury, performance and glamorous fun.

For further information about any of the mega yachts we have for sale, contact the team by email , by this sales inquiry form or by calling one of our yacht brokerage offices worldwide.

What Size Yacht Requires a Crew? (For Different Lengths)

While smaller yachts can be operated by a single person, larger yachts require a trained crew to operate them safely. Different types of yachts also have different crew needs, which can depend on the yacht's size, features, and intended use. In this article, we'll let you know what size yacht requires a crew, and how many crew are needed for different types and lengths of yacht.

Yachts that are over 30 feet in length require a crew to operate them safely. A yacht that is 100 feet in length requires a crew of at least four to six people, including a captain, engineer, stewardess, and deckhand. Meanwhile, yachts that are under 30 feet in length can be operated by a single person.

Recreational yachts are typically smaller and used for leisure activities like fishing, cruising, and water sports. Since these yachts are usually 30 feet or smaller, they can be operated by a single person without a crew. Let's see how many crew members are needed for other types of yachts.

  • If the yacht is under 30 feet and is being used for recreational cruising, a crew of two is usually sufficient.
  • A 90-foot yacht with multiple decks and luxury amenities may require a crew of 8–12 people, including a captain, first mate, chef, stewardess, and deckhand.
  • For sailing yachts between 30 and 50 feet, a crew of four to six is typically required.
  • A small superyacht may have a crew of around 20 people, while a larger one may require a crew of 50 or more.
  • The cost of hiring a full-time yacht crew can range from $50,000 to $200,000 per crew member per year.

yachts over 300 feet

On this page:

Crew requirements for different yacht sizes, yacht types and their crew needs, the cost of hiring a yacht crew and the role of each member.

The size of the yacht is a key factor in determining whether you will need a crew and how many crew members you will require. Below is a table summarizing the crew size requirements for different yacht sizes:

Crew size for yachts under 30 feet

Yachts that are under 30 feet in length are generally small enough to be operated by a single person. However, you still need to have some experience and knowledge of boating to operate them safely. It is also recommended to have at least one additional person on board for safety reasons.

If the yacht is being used for recreational cruising, a crew of two is usually sufficient. You may also need to obtain a recreational boating license depending on your location.

Not sure how to get a boating license? Find which state you're in and get a boating license here.

Crew size for yachts between 30 and 75 feet

Yachts that are between 30 and 75 feet in length may require a crew. These yachts are designed to be operated by a small crew or a couple, with one person serving as captain and the other as crew.

If you have experience and the yacht has upgraded features like autopilot, you may be able to captain your own yacht without a crew. However, if you are new to yachting or the yacht has more advanced features, you may need to hire a crew.

yachts over 300 feet

For recreational cruising, a crew of two to four people is usually sufficient . For larger yachts, there may be additional crew members such as a chef, stewardess, or engineer.

Crew size for yachts over 75 feet

Yachts that are over 75 feet in length generally require a crew to operate them safely. The exact number of crew members you will be based on the size and features of the yacht.

  • A 90-foot yacht with multiple decks and luxury amenities may require a crew of 8-12 people, including a captain, first mate, chef, stewardess, and deckhand.
  • A 100-foot yacht with advanced navigation and communication systems may require a crew of 10-15 people, including a captain, engineer, deckhand, chef, stewardess, and possibly a security officer.
  • A 120-foot yacht with a helicopter pad, swimming pool, and other high-end features may require a crew of 12-20 people, including a captain, engineer, deckhand, chef, stewardess, helicopter pilot, and other specialized staff as needed.

Crew size for yachts over 300 feet

Bigger yachts require more crew members because they tend to be more complex and have more systems and equipment that need to be maintained and operated. Additionally, larger yachts typically have more amenities and features that require specialized staff, such as spa therapists, dive instructors, and security personnel.

A yacht that is 300 feet or more in length may have multiple decks, a helipad, a swimming pool, a movie theater, a gym, and other luxurious amenities that require a larger crew to operate and maintain.

In addition, larger yachts may require more crew members to ensure the safety of the guests and the vessel, especially when navigating in challenging waters or during adverse weather conditions. Larger yachts also often provide a higher level of service, which requires more crew members to ensure that every guest's needs are met.

Different types of yachts have different crew needs, which can depend on the yacht's size, features, and intended use. Here's what you need to know about yacht types and their crew needs:

Crew size for recreational yachts

Recreational yachts are typically smaller and used for leisure activities like fishing, cruising, and water sports. Yachts that are 30 feet or smaller can usually be operated by a single person without a crew.

However, larger recreational yachts, like those in the 50-100-foot range, may require a small crew for maintenance and management.

Crew size for sailing yachts

Sailboats are a popular type of yacht used for racing, cruising, and exploring. For sailing yachts between 30 and 50 feet, a crew of four to six is typically required. This crew would include a captain, a first mate, a cook, and one or two deckhands.

yachts over 300 feet

For yachts over 50 feet, the crew size can range from six to 20 or more. This is because some yachts may also have additional staff, such as a chef, a stewardess, and a masseuse. These staff members are typically hired to provide luxury services to guests onboard.

One of the hidden costs of buying and owning a 50-foot yacht is the costs for staff and crew, which ranges around $50,000 - $150,000 per year.

Crew size for superyachts

Superyachts are the largest and most luxurious yachts on the market, typically measuring over 100 feet in length. A small superyacht may have a crew of around 20 people, while a larger one may require a crew of 50 or more.

Larger superyachts with more amenities and more guests on board will require a larger crew to ensure that all aspects of the vessel are properly maintained and operated. The team will typically include a captain, first mate, engineer, chef, stewardesses, deckhands, and other specialized roles depending on the yacht's amenities.

Some owners may prefer a smaller crew to maintain a more intimate and personalized experience, while others may opt for a larger crew to ensure that all tasks are handled efficiently and to the highest standard.

Crew size for commercial yachts

Commercial yachts are required to have a crew size that is appropriate for the size and type of the vessel, as well as the number of passengers on board. The crew size can vary greatly depending on the yacht's size, amenities, and intended use.

In general, larger yachts will have a larger crew, while smaller yachts may only require a few crew members. For example, a small yacht that is used for day trips or short-term charters may only require a captain and a mate. However, a larger yacht used for extended charters or as a luxury hotel at sea may need a larger crew.

The crew size for commercial yachts is regulated by various maritime authorities, such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the United States Coast Guard (USCG). These authorities have established minimum crew requirements based on the size and type of the yacht, as well as the number of passengers on board.

yachts over 300 feet

Based on USCG requirements, a commercial yacht that is less than 100 gross tons and carries up to 12 passengers must have at least one licensed captain and one crew member. If the yacht carries between 13 and 36 passengers, it must have at least two licensed crew members. For yachts that are over 100 gross tons, the crew size requirements will be higher.

A captain license costs around $700 - $800 , but this may vary according to the country as well as potential extras you might need to purchase.

Crew size for luxury yachts

Luxury yachts are designed for comfort and style, typically featuring high-end amenities like spas, gourmet kitchens, and entertainment systems.

Luxury yachts require a larger crew because they are typically larger, more complex, and more luxurious than other types of boats. A larger crew is necessary to ensure that everything runs smoothly and that the guests have an enjoyable and comfortable experience on board.

Here are some of the reasons why luxury yachts require a crew of 10-30 persons:

Safety: A larger crew is necessary to ensure the safety of the guests and the yacht. The crew must be trained and experienced in handling emergency situations, such as fires, medical emergencies, and adverse weather conditions.

Navigation: Luxury yachts require a skilled crew to navigate the vessel safely and efficiently. The captain and crew must be familiar with the yacht's systems, equipment, local waterways, and navigation rules.

Maintenance: Luxury yachts require constant maintenance to keep them in top condition. A larger crew is necessary to perform routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, painting, and repairing the yacht's systems and equipment.

Service: Luxury yachts are known for their high level of service and hospitality. A larger crew is necessary to provide guests with personalized service, including gourmet meals, housekeeping, and other amenities.

Entertainment: Luxury yachts often have a variety of entertainment options, such as water sports equipment, movie theaters, and music systems. A larger crew is necessary to operate and maintain these amenities, as well as to provide instruction and assistance to the guests.

The cost of hiring a full-time yacht crew can range from $50,000 to $200,000 per crew member per year. This includes their salary, benefits, and any other expenses associated with their employment, such as training and uniforms.

Here's a breakdown of the average annual salaries for different yacht crew positions:

The roles and responsibilities of the captain

  • Responsible for the overall operation of the yacht including navigation, safety, and communication with other vessels
  • Must have extensive knowledge of waterways
  • Must make quick decisions in case of emergency
  • Must hold valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) issued by USCG
  • For yachts over 100 gross tons, a captain must hold a USCG license for appropriate tonnage and route
  • May need to hold specific endorsements, such as a towing endorsement or a radar observer endorsement

The roles and responsibilities of the captain engineer

  • Responsible for mechanical systems on board the yacht such as engines, generators, and other equipment
  • Must have a good understanding of how systems work
  • Troubleshoots problems that arise
  • Works closely with the captain and other crew members
  • May be responsible for managing inventory and ordering spare parts and supplies

The roles and responsibilities of the stewardess

The stewardess is the first point of contact for guests and they are responsible for the following:

  • Greet guests warmly and show them to their cabins
  • Provide information about the yacht and its amenities, as well as local attractions and activities
  • Clean and maintain guests' cabins
  • Make beds and ensure fresh towels and linens
  • Responsible for serving meals and drinks, setting the table, and clearing dishes

The roles and responsibilities of the deckhand

The deckhand is an entry-level position on a yacht and they work under the supervision of the first mate. They are responsible for a variety of tasks such as:

  • Cleaning the yacht and handling lines and fenders
  • Assisting with navigation and docking
  • Maintaining the exterior of the yacht, such as washing and waxing the hull, cleaning the decks and windows, and maintaining the yacht's equipment and machinery

The roles and responsibilities of the chef

The billionaire Meta Platforms CEO reportedly purchased the 287-foot vessel with the name Launchpad, according to The Sun and New York Post.

He has Meta Platforms, the corporate parent of Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and Threads, to thank for that. He co-founded Facebook about 20 years ago.
