Best wake surf boats: 6 top models for creating the biggest wake

  • Top stories

Our US correspondent Elliott Maurice takes a look at some of the best wake surf boats on the market, from the likes of Axis, Yamaha and Mastercraft…

From the humble beginnings of the speedboat, owners have always towed people behind their boats on skis, boards and a variety of other contraptions.

This has evolved over the decades to include ever more extreme and inventive water sports – from simple water skis and knee boards to towable bananas, boat tubes , discs (in some cases designed to fly high out of the water) and even wearable inflatable toys but in 1974 a new form of the sport started to gain traction – wakeboarding.

Much like snowboards these shorter, twin-tipped boards were relatively easy to get started on but also better suited to jumps, tricks and stunts than traditional water skis as riders progressed.

The trend drove demand for boats that could deliver bigger wakes for ever more extreme tricks. Initially this was done by taking a traditional ski boat, originally designed to create a small, even wake for slalom skiing, and weighing down one side with passengers to create a large enough wake on one side of the boat for riders to use as a launch pad.

However, as the sport took off specialist wakeboard boats were developed with ballast tanks and drop down wedges that could create exactly the size and shape of wake required. At some point during the 1960s another sport took its first tentative steps when longboard surfers tried using the wakes of large motor cruisers to surf close behind them.

Article continues below…

How to wakesurf: Getting to grips with this surprisingly accessible watersport

Cockwells duchy sport review: this £500k stunner is the ultimate wakesurfing boat.

But it wasn’t until 2015 that a group of Australian surfers decided to try the same thing behind a wakeboarding boat. By moving their combined weight to the back and side of the boat to create a larger curling asymmetric wave then towing one of their mates into position on a shortboard, they found they could surf the wave almost indefinitely.

The sport of wake surfing had been invented and soon exploded in popularity as a low impact alternative to wakeboarding. Wake surfing can take time to master, but it appeals to a wider audience, due to being lower impact and less tiring than wakeboarding and waterskiing.

What makes a good wake surf boat?

Today’s specialist wake surf boats are an entirely different breed to the traditional tournament ski boat or any other form of sportsboat . A number of key features are designed into them, not just to improve the size of the wake but also to keep riders safe.

They are either powered by inboard engines running V-drives to a shaft-driven propeller mounted well forward of the transom or by water jets with exhausts mounted to the side instead of the stern.

There are two reasons for this: a wake surfer is often only 5ft off the stern and a stern mounted propeller from an outboard or outdrive leg could easily prove fatal. Also, it’s not nice having gasoline fumes blown in your face. With this in mind, wake surfing should never be attempted off a traditional motorboat.

best-wake-surf-boats-super-air-nautique-gs22e-perf-06

The best wake surf boats use ballast tanks (filled with water via scoops in the hull), drop-down wedges and side-mounted hydraulic fins linked to a simple touch pad control to create the perfect shape and size of wake.

In the more high-end models, this allows you to dial up a large asymmetric wake tailored to your specific needs and ability on either side of the boat. Cheaper models require a lot more user input, trial and error to get the same result often by moving people around the boat and are often based on the same basic design principles as a tournament ski boat.

This means a single high-powered engine, shaft driven with small skegs down the keel to maintain directional stability and a propeller pitched for acceleration rather than high speed for a rapid, sustained pull. Expect to spend from around $70,000 to well over $400,000 for the best in class.

wakesurfung-off-Brighton-Pier

Wakesurfung off Brighton Pier

Wake surfing boats also make excellent day boats with plenty of seating capacity for guests and storage for all the boards and kit required. They usually come as standard with big marine speakers , high-performance engines and great handling. In some cases, they are also some of the best-looking boats on the water.

The downside is they are not designed for rough seas and are completely useless as fishing boats . They also need to be kept out of the water on trailers or floating docks to avoid any fouling of the under-water scoops and propellers, so you’ll need to lift them when not in use for any length of time.

So here, in no particular order, are my six choices for the best wake surf boats out there:

6 of the best wake surf boats

wake boat and yacht

Best wake surf boat for beginners

Starting at around $75,000, the smallest of the Axis range offers exceptional value for a purpose-built wake boat. Despite being only 20ft long it can still carry up to 11 people and packs in all the features you will find on a boat costing three times as much.

The Axis has hydraulic surf gates port and starboard to shift the wake from side to side, hydraulic wedges that add 1,500lbs of displacement and a ballast system controlled via a 7-inch touchscreen on the dash, all with the sole purpose of creating the perfect surfing wake.

Even the smallest engine option (a Malibu M5DI 5.3l 360hp V8) offers the levels of torque needed to push a fully loaded and heavily ballasted Axis up to surfing speeds.

You also get an excellent, purpose-built trailer, customizable board racks and a Wet Sounds stereo package (including tower pods and Bluetooth integration), plus the option of fitting a dampened wake tower to ease lowering. This is a compelling, high-value, decent quality choice.

Super Air Nautique GS22E

Best electric wake surf boat

Based on the petrol powered GS22 wake surf boat, the Super Air Nautique GS22E is packed with the best features available.

These include a hydraulic folding wake tower, custom finishes, a configurable cockpit, and a customizable running surface that can change the characteristics from ski boat to wake surf or wakeboard use via a simple touchscreen at the helm.

The boat can even be optioned with an electric stern thruster to make docking a doddle.

super-air-nautique--gs22e-int-01

As well as being virtually silent underway, this electric boat version can offer up to three hours’ use on a single charge. The huge flat torque curve of the electric power plant perfectly suits tow sports use and onboard telemetry constantly monitors and reports the engine’s performance.

The significant $140,000 premium over the petrol powered version means this model will not be for everyone, however the emissions-free GS22E is the first of its kind and potentially the wake surf boat of the future.

best-wake-surf-boats-super-air-nautique-g25-paragon-ext-01

Super Air Nautique G25 Paragon

Best luxury wake surf boat

With a base price a shade under $250,000, the G25 Paragon can take up to 19 people out for a day on the water. With both petrol and diesel engine options and a maximum of up to 600hp there is plenty of performance on offer.

The wide 8ft 5in beam and squared-off bow, typical of the Paragon range, give this model unprecedented lounging space on board.

Options include a full custom paint job, Elite JL Audio sound system and an electric folding and telescopic wake tower. Throw in a mesh bimini top with pockets to store surfboards and underwater lighting on top of the massive standard spec and you can easily push the price to over $400,000.

super-air-nautique-g25-paragon-int-09

The base boat comes with a class-leading integrated Nautique surf system and configurable running surface.

All of this creates a seamless computer-controlled wake system, and by incorporating a supplemental ballast system under the floor amidships, you can add a further 1,450lb of water ballast to create a huge wake with a variety of different wave shapes.

The app-based Mynautique system also allows you to monitor the boat’s fuel, battery and engine management information by remote. From stem to stern the G25 is dripping with desirability, justifying the boat’s lofty price tag.

best-wake-surf-boats-yamaha-222XD

Yamaha 222XD

Best jet-powered wake surf boat

If you are looking for the outright best wake surf boat then a jet-drive boat isn’t necessarily the best option, but if you are looking for a jet boat you can also wake surf off, the 222XD is a great choice. Starting at $86,000, the Yamaha comes fitted with twin 1.8L Yamaha marine engines as standard.

The jet drive system has no external propellers and a shallow draft, making it a safe, user-friendly day boat with capacity for up to 10 passengers. The base boat also comes with a folding wake tower and fin-based wake boosters on the stern.

An additional 360lbs of ballast can be provided by speccing the optional ballast tanks. Mounted within the bathing platform, these cost an extra $660. This creates a significant wake, albeit without the finesse of the integrated systems on higher-end prop-driven wake surf boats.

The 222XD is a fun and cost-effective way to get into the sport, with all the additional features and performance you’d expect from a jet boat thrown into the mix as well.

best-wake-surf-boats-Tige-23-RZX

Tige 22 RZX

Best tournament wake surf boat

There are a number of boats that fall into this category, so it’s tough to pick a winner. For me however, the 22 RZX stands out for the sheer versatility of its convex hull shape, which literally sucks the hull down.

The Tige’s breadth of configurable wakes is impressive – anything from a virtually flat profile for slalom skiing, to an asymmetric curling wave that can rival some of mother nature’s best surfing conditions.

The combination of Tige’s convex hull shape and its TAPS3T control system means you can programme pre-set configurations of cruise speed, running attitude, ballast and wedge system, and then recall them at the touch of a button.

Tige-23-RZX-2

The system constantly monitors contributing factors and fine tunes the boat on the fly. Sporty performance comes from Indmar Raptor series engines – the top-spec Raptor 575 provides 510hp and an even more impressive 580 lb/ft of torque for seemingly endless pulling power.

Like all competitors at this level, the Tige can have full custom paint, as well as top-of-the-line Ausdison audio and a hydraulic Alpha E3 Tower, fitted as standard.

Prices start at $230,000, but expect to pay over $300,000 for a top-spec boat. The fit, finish and build quality justify the high price, not to mention the performance and stunning looks.

Mastercraft XStar S

Best all-round wake surf boat

It is difficult to pick one overall favorite, but if I had to, the Mastercraft is it. The aesthetic of this boat for one thing is truly stunning.

For over 50 years, Mastercraft have been the benchmark for tournament tow boats. Not only does the XStar S have all the premium features of its competition for 2023, but it is now available with the most powerful production tow boat engine ever produced.

Built by Ilmor, known for building NASCAR engines, the new 630hp supercharged motor is the new gold standard in both torque and horsepower.’

wake boat and yacht

The Mastercraft is also available in a saltwater spec, featuring closed freshwater cooling, hydraulic steering, extra electrical bonding and teflon-coated aluminum components. Other new features included an optional fold-down step on the bathing platform, aft facing chaise lounges on the transom, and convertible seating throughout.

With arguably the best and driest ride on this type of boat, along with wake producing systems that are level best in this segment, the 23ft XStar S gets my pick for the best overall wake surf boat.

Starting at just under $245,000, this is a premium boat, and when fully optioned nearer the $400,000 mark, complete with metalflake paint, powder-coated hardware, twin-screen helm, underwater lights and a top-of-the-line sound system, this wake surf boat wants for nothing.

1.  Axis Wake T235

Axis Wake T235

The T235 is the newest boat from Axis (2023 model) and it has all the latest tech to turn rides into thrills. It’s designed specifically for both wakeboarding and wake surfing, with the ability to adjust and shape wakes via the Power Wedge III tab (which generates up to 1,500 pounds of displacement) and the Axis Surf Gate (equipped with hydraulic actuators to shift the wake from side to side in a blink).

  • Estimated MSRP: $129,000

Visit Axis Wake to learn more.

2.  Chaparral 30 Surf

Chaparral 30 surf

A 30-foot surf boat?! Well, yes and no. This won’t be the choice for wake sports connoisseurs, but if you want a mega-monster bowrider and you also enjoy watersports, no surf boat gets more mega than this Chaparral 30 Surf.

It’s also one of the few surf boats around that has twin engines, a pair of Volvo Penta V-8s hitched to Forward Drive units, which places the props far forward of the transom to allow for safe wake surfing.

For many people size will matter, and in this case, the extra space nets you a roomy enclosed head compartment with a vanity, sink, and pull-out freshwater shower; comfy seating for a dozen people (note that the boat is yacht certified, so it doesn’t carry a maximum on the number of passengers); and 7,200 pounds of mass that will squash the waves of all those other boats without effort.

  • Estimated MSRP: $155,995

Visit Chaparral to learn more.

3.  Four Winns Surf Series

Four Winns Surf Series

In the case of Four Winns we’re not going to focus on one single boat but instead on their Surf Series model line , because these 22’ to 26’6” boats are essentially Four Winns runabouts tweaked for watersports with a Volvo Penta Forward Drive.

Are they hard core wake boats? Heck no. Do they deliver all the versatility and family fun of a bowrider? Heck yes. Any of the boats in this lineup will score high among families with boating interests that go beyond wake sports alone, but still make a great beginner boat for those who love the sport.

And you beginner boarders — check out Wakeboarding Basic Tricks before you step aboard and you’ll have a few stunts up your sleeve from day one.

  • Estimated MSRP: 102,998

Visit Four Winns to learn more.

4.  Heyday WT-2DC

Heyday WT-2DC

The Heyday WT-2DC is one of the few dedicated watersports boats that offers fans a way to get into the game without blowing the budget. Its priced 30- to 50-percent below many competitors, but has a hull designed to maximize wake-throwing displacement with an angled transom that adds curl to the wake.

Standard power is a potent 350-hp Crusader inboard, standard ballast is 1,800-pounds (an additional 650-pound ballast system is optional), and up to a dozen people can jump aboard for the ride. Heyday also equips the WT-2DC with a removable swim platform and folding tower, for easy storage.

  • Estimated MSRP: $66,995

Visit Heyday to learn more.

5.  Malibu 26 LVS

Malibu 26 LVS

The biggest boat ever built by Malibu, the 26 LVS is all new for 2023 and is one of the largest dedicated wakesports boats around. You want to be king of the lake? Here you go. The 26 LVS has an amazing 17-person capacity, carries an eye-popping 6,100 pounds of ballast, and powers across the water with a 607-hp 6.2L direct-injected Monsoon LT4 engine.

A cool perk found on the 26 LVS is the “Max-Pivot” seat in the stern , which converts between a rear-facing seat and a sunlounge.

  • Estimated MSRP: $165,500

Visit Malibu Boats to learn more.

6.  MasterCraft Xstar S Piranha

MasterCraft Xstar S Piranha

This limited edition 2023 model is stacked with just about every upgrade and premium feature you can imagine. From the purple flake gel coat to the Klipsch 10 speaker stereo system to the stern thruster — yes, this is a wake boat with a stern thruster for the ultimate in dockside handling — the Xstar S Piranha really does have it all.

Power is provided by a supercharged 6.2L Ilmor inboard and waves are crafted with Surfstar, which integrates the ballast, tabs, and wake-shaping software in a touchscreen-controlled system.

  • Estimated MSRP :$329,446.00

Visit MasterCraft to learn more.

7.  Moomba Mondo

Moomba Mondo

The Mondo is Moomba’s smallest boat at 20’ of LOA, and with a trailer length of 23’9” and a height of fewer than eight feet with the tower folded down, gives watersports fans the ability to step into a top-quality wake boat that fits into many garages.

Storing a boat indoors extends its lifetime and boosts resale value tremendously, so this can be a make-or-break characteristic. Features of note include 3,700 pounds of ballast, and options for the Flow3 and Smartplate tabs for enhanced wake-shaping abilities.

  • Estimated MSRP: $86,720

Visit Moomba to learn more.

8.  Nautique G25 Paragon

Nautique G25 Paragon

If you’re searching for the wake boat that delivers the maximum in luxury , the Nautique G25 will doubtlessly be a top contender. The bow has recliner-size seats with armrests and a drop-in insert turns the entire area into a huge sun lounge.

The stern has a center three-position seat that can face either way or join the side loungers to span the entire width of the boat, and the actuated helm seat adjusts at the press of a button. The stereo system is another highlight, boasting six speakers in the boat, four on the tower, a pair of subwoofers, a monoblock amp, and a JL Audio MM100 head unit plus a transom remote. Whew!

  • Estimated MSRP :$375,000

Visit Nautique to learn more.

9.  Supreme S240

Supreme S240

Supreme’s S series is intended to deliver a top-end wave-making machine at a lower-than-expected price, and the S240 is the largest model in the line. It comes with the boarding perks you expect in a top-shelf wakeboarding boat, like up to 4,800 pounds of ballast pumped into six individual locations, a stainless-steel tower, and optional Stinger wake plate and QuickSurf systems.

What’s surprising, however, is the boat’s capacity for its size: it can hold a whopping-big crew of 16. If you like to hit the lake with all your friends and their friends too, this one is the ticket.

  • Estimated MSRP : $128,285

Visit Supreme to learn more.

10. Yamaha Wake Series

Yamaha Wake Series

This is another case where it makes sense to look at the entire model line as opposed to a single boat, because Yamaha’s Wake Series is the ideal pick for watersports lovers who also love jet boats .

Available in 22’ and 25’ sizes in multiple levels of trim and wakeboarding tech, these boats run on a pair of Yamaha 1.8L high-output or supercharged engines blasting H2O through 155- or 160-mm high-pressure waterjet pumps. Not only will you never have to worry about having a propeller spinning beneath the surface, these boats offer all the fun and maneuverability of jetboat-style handling.

  • Estimated MSRP :$81,299

Visit Yamaha Boats to learn more.

9 Best Small Wake Boats 2024

  • By Garrett Cortese
  • Updated: January 24, 2024

Heyday H20 ready for wake sports

Given the growth of the inboard watersports boat market over the last decade, it should come as no surprise that the trend of offering bigger and bigger models has only—for lack of a better term—grown. Manufacturers such as Centurion , Malibu and MasterCraft all offer models 26 feet or longer. But does bigger always mean better? Not necessarily. Fortunately, for prospective buyers who need something smaller, there are still plenty of options to choose from. Most brands offer at least one model 21 feet or under, and several offer multiple. While the advantages of larger boats specific to wakeboarding and wakesurfing are fairly obvious, such as more room for friends, larger ballast systems for superior waves, etc., there are a lot of benefits to smaller boats.

The most obvious advantage is the purchase price. Generally, a 20- to 22-foot model is going to cost significantly less than a 25- to 26-footer. The second biggest economic advantage for smaller boats is fuel efficiency. Less fuel consumed means more wallet savings. Plus, if you’re a boater who needs to trailer your boat to and from your favorite riding spots, a smaller boat means better gas mileage for the tow vehicle (and quite possibly a cheaper vehicle that doesn’t require such a large tow rating).

Along with being easier to tow, smaller boat models are much easier to store, especially if you need to keep one in a standard-size garage. Every model listed in this roundup features a collapsible tower, making it ideal for storing in tighter places. The smaller size also presents an advantage when it comes to handling. A 20-foot boat is going to be easier to maneuver than its 26-foot sibling. MasterCraft’s XT20 is 6 feet, 5 inches shorter, 2 inches narrower and 1,800 pounds lighter than the Yacht Certified X26 , so you know it’s going to be less demanding to handle in tight quarters.

With all the advancements in hull design and wave-shaping technologies, the smaller boats in the watersports segment are able to produce better wakes and waves than ever before. In years past, buyers who wanted clean surf waves with plenty of push for all the riders in their family often had to go for the bigger boats that displaced more water. In 2024, that’s not always the case. All the boats in our list can create waves that cater to all types of different riding levels and styles. You won’t be able to bring 16 or 17 of your closest friends; however, you can have a blast on the water with everybody you can bring, and you’ll likely save some money while doing it.

Here’s a look at nine of the best wakeboats under 21 feet.

MasterCraft XT20

The MasterCraft XT20 has been redesigned from the bottom up and MasterCraft have put a lot of time into making sure this 20-footer packs a punch more in line with bigger models. Equipped with the revamped SurfStar system, the XT20 can push out sizeable waves with plenty of push, along with clean, symmetrical wakeboarding wakes. The convertible rear bench and transom lounge seats–built with MasterCraft’s triple density foam and ultra-comfy vinyl–ensure everybody onboard will be comfortable. The XT line is one of the most customizable in the market, so buyers can opt to go more minimal with a new build, or take this 20-footer to the next level with all the bells and whistles MasterCraft have to offer.

Pricing and Specs

All-new for 2023, the Heyday H20 builds on the success of its bigger sibling, the H22. Heyday has carved out a solid spot in the marketplace by offering great performance at a very affordable price. The H20 is the only boat in this lineup without an automated surf system, but it doesn’t necessarily need one – it still puts up a solid wave, and that can be added to with an optional suction-cup-mounted wave shaper device. Two features we love about the H20: the rear-facing transom seats are an awesome way to watch the action on the water–no other manufacturer has seats like these, and the power-folding swimstep. This makes the H20 even easier to store in a garage or other tight spaces.

Moomba Mondo

Moomba have consistently upgraded the performance and capabilities of their models, allowing buyers to get solid performance at a more budget-friendly price. The 20-foot Moomba Mondo is the smallest in the lineup, but thanks to an impressive 3,700 pounds of ballast, the Swell Surf System plates and AutoWake technology, it kicks up seriously fun wakes and waves. AutoWake is key for the Mondo, as the system utilizes onboard sensors to monitor the boat’s running attitude. It will automatically adjust the Swell Surf System and ballast as needed in order to keep the wake or wave in an optimal spot. This takes a ton of the guesswork out of setting the Mondo up, which is great for new users or veteran riders alike, because it means less time trying to figure things out and more time on the water having fun.

The Axis A20 has been a staple in the Axis lineup since the brand’s inception, and it saw a major refresh in 2020. An improved running surface, combined with a more comfortable ride make the A20 a great option for families getting into the watersports scene. The ease-of-use of the Surf Gate and Power Wedge III systems for wakeboarding and wakesurfing can’t be overstated. The A20’s versatility make it great for riders just learning to get up or those looking to add more advanced tricks to their bag.

Centurion Fi21

The Centurion Fi21 is the smallest boat in the Centurion line, but it still prides itself on the wave-making performance Centurion is known for. At 5,100 pounds, the Fi21 is the heaviest in this group (tied with the MasterCraft XT20), and combined with its whopping 4,750 pounds of ballast (by far the most in this group), it can displace a lot of water. Featuring Centurion’s acclaimed Opti-V hull for a running surface, that means riders are getting clean, powerful waves with a large pocket and plenty of push. The QuickSurf Pro plates at the transom ensure the waves stay consistent and fun, while allowing for limitless customization for riders of any skill level.

Malibu 21 LX

Introduced in 2022, the Malibu 21 LX is a model that takes influence from several previous Malibu models and molds them into a multisport, family-fun machine. The hybrid bow is one easy-to-spot representation of this–the 21 LX has lines similar to a traditional bow, but the interior area is shaped like a bigger pickle fork bow, allowing more room for passengers. Buyers can choose between two hull types, Wake Plus and Diamond. Wake Plus caters to those looking more toward wakesurfing and wakeboarding performance, while Diamond is geared toward ultimate versatility for users who also want to water ski more aggressively behind the 21 LX. As for the wakes and waves, the combination of Surf Gate and Power Wedge III ensure the 21 LX can be quickly and easily tweaked for all different levels and styles of riding. Opt in for the Surf Band remote and the rider can control those systems from their wrist while riding.

Nautique GS20

The Nautique GS20 underwent a complete redesign and is all-new for 2023. Touted as a true crossover performer, it can pull a fun wakesurf session with solid waves and then in a matter of minutes tow a skier through the slalom course. The GS20’s hull takes design cues from its Ski Nautique and Super Air Nautique G23 cousins, allowing it to perform better than you’d think in both extremes for a 20-foot V-drive. With Nautique Surf System plates tooled into the transom of the boat, the GS20 can quickly kick up solid wakesurfing waves that can be fine-tuned for beginners to more advanced riders. NSS plates are also much smaller than other surf system plates on the market, allowing for quick transfers from side to side when wakesurfing.

The 20′ 11” Supra SR offers the sporty, aggressive looks Supra have become known for, with all-around performance that caters to first-timers and more advanced riders alike. At just under 21-feet, the SR is rated for 14 passengers, more than any other boat on this list, and if you load up with friends, along with the 3,300 pounds of ballast and Supra’s Swell Surf System, you’re going to get some endless waves that are a ton of fun. Supra’s patented AutoWake system comes standard, making the on-water experience that much easier and more fun for both the rider and the captain.

Tigé 20 RZX

Despite being 20 feet on the dot, Tigé’s pickle-fork shaped 20RZX offers room for 13 while holding up to 3,000 pounds of ballast. With just one screen at the helm–the vertically-mounted Clear Screen–the 20 RZX keeps things simple and clean. The single screen on the right of the steering wheel means the captain has a clean line of sight and minimal distractions, while the 20 RZX’s systems can still be quickly and easily controlled with a couple finger taps. Preset settings for surfing, wakeboarding and water skiing make the 20 RZX a breeze to set up and start riding, and the TAPS 3T surf plates allow for easy customization of the waves for a variety of riders.

Ordinance to prohibit wake surfing being challenged on Waupaca chain of lakes

An ordinance passed jan. 15 to prohibit wake-enhanced boating on two lakes in the waupaca chain 'o lakes is being challenged. the town will hold a meeting monday on the matter..

wake boat and yacht

A showdown is looming in a small Wisconsin township that could have large implications for wake surfing restrictions in the state.

At issue: an ordinance passed by the Town of Farmington in Waupaca County to prohibit wake-enhanced boating on two lakes in its jurisdiction.

The 2-1 vote on Jan. 15 by the town board is broadly supported by local residents and aligns with recommendations of lake district committees.

However, a group of wake surfing advocates hired an attorney last fall to sue the committee members and pressure the town board to rescind or modify the ordinance.

The town board has so far not changed its stance. But it will hold a public meeting on the matter at 6 p.m. Monday.

Members of the public and legal representatives on both sides of the issue are expected to appear.

It's the latest battle – with arguably the most direct ramifications – over wake surfing in Wisconsin.

"If Farmington backs down the word will spread and lots of other towns may be deterred from adopting enhanced wake ordinances," said Richard Phillips, a member of Last Wilderness Alliance , a non-profit group based in Presque Isle that has raised concerns about the impacts of wake surfing.

From local boards to state legislatures, wake surfing is becoming a hot-button issue.

Wake boats are power craft with special ballast tanks designed to increase their displacement and create larger than normal waves for surfing or tubing. Several thousand pounds of lake water are commonly taken into the tanks to increase the wake.

The waves are large enough to allow surfers to follow the boat without a tow rope.

The sale and use of wake boats has increased in recent years, according to the Water Sports Industry Association.

While the boats provide a new option for water sports enthusiasts, the large wakes and powerful downthrusts  raise concerns  of ecological damage, shoreline erosion and conflicts with other lake users.

In addition, there are concerns about aquatic invasive species being spread between lakes via the boat's ballast tanks. A group of Wisconsin citizens  recently filed a petition  with the Department of Natural Resources in an effort to require wake boats to stay on a single waterbody or prove they were decontaminated before moving.

Such concerns led officials in Vermont this year to enact the strongest wake-surfing restrictions of any state. The rules allow wake sports only more than 500 feet from shore, in water at least 20 feet deep and in an area of a lake with at least 50 contiguous acres that meet both requirements.

In Wisconsin a Republican-led attempt to implement a state law on wake boating foundered earlier this year in the Legislature. A bill widely regarded as "boating industry friendly" and lacking in protections for lakes failed to receive a hearing.

It has left municipalities concerned about the impacts of wake surfing with no immediate alternative but to attempt to enact a local ordinance on the activity.

So far 17 Wisconsin towns have adopted ordinances to restrict or prohibit wake-enhanced boating, including three this year, according to the Last Wilderness Alliance.

In 2022 the Town of Farmington (population 3,757 in 2022) started to take a closer took at the issue of wake surfing on its lakes, part of the 22-lake Waupaca Chain O' Lakes.

The Waupaca chain is made up of small (all less than 115 acres), spring-fed lakes. Half have slow, no-wake regulations but a few allow standard motor boat activities.

The Town of Farmington has a long history of enacting ordinances to protect public safety and the health of its lakes.

In 1949 it passed an ordinance to prohibit aircraft from landing on the lakes. And in 1987 it added an ordinance that created slow, no-wake zones to provide "safe and healthful conditions for the enjoyment of the aquatic recreation consistent with public rights and interest and the capability of the water resource."

After a review of issues and information, last year the Chain O' Lakes Lake District found "the use of wake-enhanced capabilities severely reduces the number of boaters that can enjoy/use the lakes" and a citizen advisory committee recommended a local ordinance "prohibiting the use of wake enhanced capabilities on the Chain O’ Lakes." The committee vote was 7-0 in favor of the wake surfing prohibition.

A public hearing was held last October on the matter. And Jan. 15 the town board approved it by a 2-1 vote.

However, some wake surfing advocates have opposed the process and decision.

On Nov. 15 lawsuits were filed against the members of the Waupaca Chain O' Lakes Protection and Rehabilitation District and the Waupaca Chain O' Lakes Citizen Advisory Committee.

The plaintiffs in both lawsuits are listed as Andrew Gottschalk, Todd Kelsey, Andrew Koehl, Matthew and Laura McGourthy, Scott and Joan Panzenhagen, Scott Schroeder and Gregory Werner. All list Waupaca addresses, engage in recreational activity on area lakes and pay property taxes to the lake district, according to the legal filing.

The defendants in one lawsuit are the members of the lake district (Kevin Baker, Kevin Denow, Robert Ellis, Daniel Johnson, Paul Mazzoleni, William Morgan, Gerald and Caroline Murphy, Catherine Raynor and Frederick Silloway) and in the other are members of the citizen advisory committee (Peggy Jesion, Daniel and Fawn Johnson, Carl Nelson, Craig Klapper, William Morgan and Roseanne Spaar).

The lawsuits allege violations of the state's open meetings law.

However, the Waupaca County district attorney issued a "will not prosecute" letter on the matter.

On Jan. 22 the plaintiffs' attorney, Anders Helquist of Weld Riley SC in Eau Claire, wrote a letter calling on the Town of Farmington Board of Supervisors to either rescind the wake-surfing ordinance or substitute it with less restrictive rules. Lacking a change, the letter suggested legal action would follow.

Helquist suggested restricting wake surfing to areas at least 200 feet from shore and 100 feet from an anchored boat or personal watercraft.

In an email seeking comment, Helquist on Friday said "we appreciate the Town’s openness to a collaborative approach that will hopefully result in practical, inclusive solutions for all, not a divisive outright ban."

The town board hasn't indicated whether it intends to change the ordinance.

Phillips, a retired attorney who plans to be at Monday's meeting, said it was unfortunate to see legal threats against the town.

"I will say thank you to the Farmington Town Board for its guts to stand up and say that enhanced wakes on the small lakes of the chain is not responsible," Phillips said. "And if this legal issue gets pressed, we will assemble a formidable legal team. And it won't cost Farmington a dime."

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at the Town Hall, E913 Prairie View Lane, Waupaca.

Wake surfing enthusiasts look to overturn ban on Chain o' Lakes

T OWN OF FARMINGTON (WLUK) -- A popular outdoor recreational activity has an unclear future in the town of Farmington, and it's making waves among the divided community.

“It's a complete ban on a legal activity," Attorney Anders Helquist said. "My clients are looking for reasonable and safe setbacks and allowances to continue to use their wake boats.”

This due to a town ordinance banning wake surfing . While supported by many, it’s causing others to threaten taking legal action if not repealed or amended.

“We appreciate the steps the town board has taken to have this public hearing to potentially rescind and amend the ordinance and we hope the town will continue down that path rather than the legal, court path," Helquist said.

Helquist is representing landowners in the area who want to see wake surfing saved. During a special public hearing Monday, he shared his desire to find a compromise that allows wake surfing.

Meanwhile, dozens of others shared support of the existing ordinance.

"Thank you for prioritizing safety on our lakes," resident Fred Silloway said. "Your decision on Jan. 15 to restrict wake surfing on Rainbow and Round Lakes was the right one. It's backed by strong science and supported by the majority of lake users."

Concerns range from safety to environmental effects and property value loss.

“It's up to us to protect these beautiful gifts of lakes that we have and it's already too late," one person said.

"We have lost our enjoyment of that lakefront," another person said. "It is like a war in front of us. It is loud and now the waves are just crashing on the boats, the canoes, on the sailboats, against people, against the dock. It's unreal."

Those on the other side of the debate also made their voices heard.

"Ice, wind, there's all sorts of different variables that could be taken into affect besides a boat," one person said. "And which boat are we talking about? There's many models."

No action was taken. The board decided to schedule a vote on April 4 to make a final determination.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

wake boat and yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
