Some of the other famous parks of Victoria include Fisherman's Wharf Park, Abkhazi Garden, and Thunderbird Park.

The Royal BC Museum is a natural and human history museum which showcases natural wonders like dinosaurs. About Big Blue Sailing

Big Blue Sailing School is a Victoria area based, Sail Canada (CYA) registered Sailing School and Sailing Charter Company. If you’re like us, you have dreamed about sailing and enjoying the fun and adventure that sailing provides. Our dreams have captured us and we want to share that with you. Our sail school offers a safe learning environment that is both challenging and rewarding for anyone who wants to learn to sail.

We created the sailing school to share with people the joy of sailing. Even an afternoon in the harbour on a sailboat is a very rewarding experience. It’s hard to explain. Knocking about in boats is about as fun as it gets.

Your Instructors

When I was a child I had two dreams. One was to be a Voyageur, the other was to sail the world. Fortunately, I had access to both in my youth. I grew up in lake country in Ontario and had access to both canoes and sailboats. My parents had a little daysailer, a 20-footer, with a 9.9 kicker. We’ve had boats ever since. Growing up around the water was part of my childhood.

Now, I’m coming back around to those dreams. I’ve eased up on the Voyageur idea, but still own the canoe. We may sail the world yet, we’ll see. My wife Leslie and I have had a sailboat on the north coast for at least the last 20 years and now we’re very pleased to be located in beautiful Sidney BC. We really like sailing and the opportunity it brings.

We are very excited to call the Canoe Cove Marina in Sidney BC our new home.  Canoe Cove Marina is located immediately adjacent to the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal.

Sailing. Have you ever wondered what the fascination is all about? Here is your chance! Our vessel is a Beneteau 351 moored in Oak Bay (a 10 minute scenic drive along the ocean from downtown Victoria). You can choose a half-day or full-day sail in and around these protected waters. Previous sailing experience is not a requirement.

You can participate fully in all aspects of sailing and even take command at the helm if you desire. You will be introduced to basic sailing skills and safety at sea. Your skipper, is a Certified Cruising Instructor with Sail Canada.

Before each departure we spend a half hour or so familiarizing everyone with the safety features and basic operation of the boat, including emergency procedures. We also introduce you to area charts which allows us to plan our trip and discuss sailing options. Our “hands-on” approach will have you sailing this beautiful yacht sooner than you think.

You can choose between an Individual Sign Up (booking per person) and an Exclusive Charter . If you sign up as individuals, we will try to find others to go with you. If you sign up as an Exclusive Charter then you and your group will have the whole boat and the instructor to yourself.

*The above prices are in Canadian dollars and include skipper. They do not include a 5% tax. Just a single or double? Don’t worry, we can find a compatible group for you.

HALF-DAY AND FULL-DAY SAILS

Sailing Adventures: if you have a half day to spend, we could sail around the Discovery and Chatham Islands. These are amazing islands: solitary, wild, natural, and set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Half-Day Sails (3 hours) typically run between 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM or from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM.

Having a full day allows extra time for lunch and refreshments while anchored in a secluded cove among the islands. If you desire, we can go ashore to hike and explore. Full-Day Sails will typically go from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

The advantage of departing from Oak Bay Marina is that this area features the most reliable winds for sailing to be found around southern Vancouver Island. Oak Bay is especially popular with boaters because of the many islands which offer protection from the prevailing winds and waves, and provide sheltered anchorages and fun places to explore. For wildlife enthusiasts, the marine ecological reserves are home to many seals, eagles, and marine birds as well as the occasional sea lion and whale. If more challenging sailing conditions are desired there is the choice of sailing the open waters of Juan de Fuca Strait or Haro Strait.

OAK BAY DEPARTURE POINT

For day sails and cruises, Ibis, our main yacht leaves from the end of “C” dock at Oak Bay Marina. This is the first dock you will encounter, just to the right of the bottom of the ramp leading down to the water. Food and drinks are available at the coffee shop on the bottom level of the marina building and there is a fine dining restaurant overlooking the harbour on the second level. Good bus and taxi service from downtown is available. If you have your own vehicle, free and ample parking is available at the Marina. Directions to the boat (PDF)

WHAT TO BRING

The clothing you choose will be dependent on the weather for that day. Remember that it can be cooler on the water than it is on land. Bring an extra layer that should include a windbreaker of some kind. Be sure to have deck shoes or runners, preferably with a non-marking sole. The Ibis has a warm, comfortable cabin and there is protection in the cockpit under a dodger and bimini. Sunglasses, sunhat and sunscreen are a must on bright days. If you are coming for the full day, bring a lunch. We supply life jackets, non-alcoholic refreshments and a friendly skipper.

“The Ibis” is a graceful 35 foot Beneteau Oceanis 351 and is classified as a performance cruiser. She is spacious, comfortable and very stable. All sails are self-furling with all the controls leading back to the cockpit which make her fun and easy to sail.

The cockpit is protected by a dodger over the companionway and the “Bimini” offers overhead protection for the person at the helm.

Only you and your guests will be on board to sail on your schedule. Individual seating with back support for 6 passengers provides optimum comfort. Designed and built in France the Medline III is actually approved for 8 persons for the open ocean in the "Offshore Design Category B" of the ERCD, and 15 passengers for at sea but close to shore in the "Inshore Design Category C"

A marine toilet in the privacy of the helm cabin and 2 fuel tanks totalling 345 litres give us a long-range cruising capacity to offer any type of excursion from 4 to 8 hour day trips to multiple days with on-shore overnight accommodations. Unlike the public whale-watching zodiacs the Medline III is built for comfort. You can move around and are not restricted to staying in one spot for the entire trip. Lunches and snacks can be part of the package or you can bring your own. There is an ice box, gas burner and even a kitchen sink with running water.

Just about everyone who visits Victoria gets out on the water, one way or another.  In fact, since we’re located on the south end of Vancouver Island, if you don’t fly in, you get here by water: either the BC Ferries ’ routes from Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, or from the USA by either the Coho ferry (from Port Angeles) or the Anacortes Ferry from Seattle via the San Juan Islands.

Here is a sampling of some of our most popular excursions. If we see whales while we’re out on a charter we will of course stop and view them from at least 400 metres distance, however, we do NOT expressly do whale watching excursions on our private charters. Marine EcoTours and Nature Photography

Southern Vancouver Island has an abundance of marine wildlife. While the commercial whale-watching outfits have perhaps ensured we are best known for our resident and transient Orca Killer Whales there is so much more to be seen. Humpback, Gray and Minke whales also frequent the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Haro Straight. Race Rocks Ecological Reserve/ Marine Protected Area is abundant with pelagic birds and from September through March with Sea Lions.

Marine eco tours can include bird watching, wildlife observation along shores, lagoons and in many of our west coast harbours.

• Custom Charters

Day trips can include visiting Salt Spring Island for arts and crafts, exploring other Gulf Islands and the San Juan Islands, a run over to Vancouver, up Howe Sound to Squamish, or to the sunshine coast from Gibsons to Seschelt. Transportaion to any number of island camping spots.

Overnight trips to anywhere between here and the Queen Charlottes can also be packaged with on-shore overnight accommodation. For northern Vancouver Island charters we can easily trailer the Zodiac to the apropriate launch site if you prefer to start your trip from somewhere other than Victoria. We can arrange an exclusive custom boating excursion for whatever you wish to do.

Historical and Heritage Tours

Before the trans-canada railroad was built in 1885, the only way to access western Canada was by ship. Hundreds of shipwrecks off Vancouver Island’s west coast are a testament to the martime traffic and dangers of those days.

Some 27 staffed Lighthouses and another 18 auotmated lighthouses - 2 more at Albert Head and Triangle Island have been removed - dot British Columbia’s west coast. The oldest amongst them is Fisgard Lighthouse marking the entrance to Esquimalt Harbour, literally in the "back yard" of Birds of a Feather B&B.

While Fisgard is easily reached by land - yet presents entirely fifferent from sea - the same is not true for most of the other 9 or so lighthouses and beacons near Victoria, or the remaining 38 further up the coast. These are best accessed and viewed by boat. A day trip from Victoria can easily include the lighthouses at Sheringham Point in Sooke, Race Rocks (2nd oldest lighthouse) in Metchosin, Trial Island and Discovery island in Victoria, the Gulf Island of Saturna, and Active Pass.

Humpys, Orcas, Stellars and California Sea Lions all in one afternoon

Every day is a unique adventure out on the Salish Sea but today’s trip stood out. We launched at Pedder Bay Marina in Metchosin to place us close to Race Rocks. As the California and Stellar Sea Lion bulls were entertaining us from their perches on the rock formations we suddenly found ourselves surrounded by a dozen or so of these mamoths swimming, diving and porpoising. Then the incredible happened. One of the stellars suddenly sprang out of the water not 40 feet from us with a huge salmon which it had just caught as it breached the surface. The salmon was squirming it the sea lion’s mouth. Just as quickly as the stellar had surfaced he dove again and repeated this motion 2 more times. All the while a dozen or so of his very excited mates were porpoising almost in unison as a group. In 12 years being out here on the ocean that was a first for me. This was just the begginning of our adventure. We had heard reports of 4 to 6 humpbacks in the general vicinity over the past week. As we networked with our colleagues we heard 6 transient orcas were nearby. We spent a bit of time enjoying the orcas before heading out in the direction of the shipping lanes where soon we spotted 4 humpbacks. They put on quite a show for us including some excellent tail flukes. The humpbacks were also very vocal. All this in the space of 4 hours on one of those special autumn days when the seas were calm and the sun was out.

3 Hour Sail

Join us as we embark on a tall ship adventure with spectacular scenery and marine life.

Sights can include the historic Fisgard Lighthouse, Naval harbour, Esquimalt Lagoon, Whitty’s Lagoon and Trial Island. We may go out as far as the shipping lane and down to Clover Point.

Our knowledgeable crew can share info on marine history, wildlife and local history and geology. We can also throw in a casual sailing lesson. You are encouraged to help sail by hauling the sails, taking the helm, riding on the bowsprit, or simply relaxing onboard.

There is opportunity to view eagles, great blue herons, seals, dolphins and occasionally whales!

Depart 10 am or 2pm, adult: $145 + tx 13 – 17 yrs: $135 + tx 2 - 12 yrs: $125 + tx.

You are welcome to bring along a picnic on your sail, as we do not have food available for purchase. There are many local restaurants near the dock which offer takeaway meals and snacks for your enjoyment.

Alcohol is permitted on board (within reason). We have coolers, ice, glasses and bottle openers available for our guests. However, our sailings are family friendly – we are not a booze cruise!

Be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure. Departure times may vary slightly due to weather and special events in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.
