Pick the Right Boat Hook

  • By Eric Colby
  • Updated: February 20, 2020

What is a boat hook used for? A boat hook is one of those tools that you don’t realize you need until you don’t have one on board. Of course, most use boat hooks for rope, snagging dock and mooring lines, but a boat hook can be also used to fend off at a dock, place a loop over a piling, or even grab a gear bag.

When you start thinking about it, a boat hook can be used for many tasks. Here are three models to consider.

Best Boat Hooks

The Davis telescoping boat hooks come with poles in 4- and 6-foot lengths (retracted) and extend out to 8 and 12 feet, respectively. Both models are anodized aluminum and float. Threads on the tip of the pole allow a brush or mop to attach. It has a soft vinyl top that protects the boat’s finish when fending off. Watch out, as telescopic boat hooks may collapse unexpectedly.

Best Boat Hooks

The West Marine boat hook pole floats and is made of aluminum tubing that telescopes and twist-locks. Nylon heads are curved to aid in line retrieval, and the soft tips prevent scratches. The Shorty model telescopes from 3 to 7 feet and is designed for smaller boats that do not have a place to stow longer boat hooks.

Best Boat Hooks

This hook helps crew members thread a rope through a mooring ring with a push or pull. It uses your mooring line directly — no messenger or guidelines needed — and it works as an ordinary boat hook when the hook head is locked in place. Both 6- and 9-foot models retract to 447/8 inches for storage. This boat hook doesn’t float like some other boat hooks do.

The Best Boat Hooks for Docking, Undocking & Pulling Up Lines

Written by J. Harvey / Fact checked by S. Numbers

best boat hook

Your boating experience is better with the right boating equipment. Apart from a boat cover and docking lines , it’s recommended to get the best boat hook. It’s a tool for pulling and pushing your vessel, checking water depth, retrieving lines, passing items to another person, etc.

A boat hook is more than just a long pole with a spike or hook on the tip. To get a boat hook that’s worth your money, keep these factors in mind.

  • Multipurpose

As mentioned, a boat hook pole is utilized in many things that happen onboard. So, it’s understandable that you should go after the multipurpose type. It’s not a problem as there’s a lot of options in the market. You’ll be able to buy one that you can use to pull docking lines, retrieve objects, hang things, and more.

  • Safety and security

Choose a boat hook that can be handheld with no trouble. What I want to emphasize is the importance of versatility, ease of use, and convenience. A boat hook that delivers on these makes life onboard easier. Apart from a secure grip, the non-slip feature ensures that it won’t slip from your hands. Nothing can spoil boating fun when you don’t have trouble handling this tool.

Some marine hooks have a rubber tip. This feature is most helpful when using this tool as a boat dock hook as your boat won’t have scratches when you dock and undock.

  • Quality and non-corrosive finish

A boat hook in premium quality guarantees long-term use. Furthermore, a non-corrosive finish allows it to last even with consistent saltwater exposure. The best materials that promise durability are aluminum and stainless steel.

Aluminum has a lower price, but it can be bulky and easily scratched. On the other, stainless steel is costlier, but it delivers outstanding performance.

  • Floating ability

Unexpected things can happen like accidentally dropping marine accessories, which will be hard or almost impossible to get back. Thus, in these cases, a floating boat hook is more reliable. With air chambers inside it, you won’t lose it forever when you lose grip.

With these factors, you know now how to identify the ideal boat hook. You can choose one from the following list.

This possesses the highest quality among the telescoping poles in the market, and this is the most heavy-duty boat hook I’ve ever discovered. It’s made of anodized aluminum that resists rust. Therefore, the one-year warranty provided for this product is reasonable. It weighs just 1.5 pounds, but you will be in awe of its sturdiness.

This telescoping boat hook can be extended until 25 ft. To start using, twist it and you can put it in three different lengths. I find it a breeze to change the length as it has latches similar to what tripods have. With the manual lock, there’s assurance of maintaining its length. The non-slip handgrip is also excellent.

It transforms into more than just a boat hook since you can switch the end part to any tool. Hence, it’s an all-around utility pole! It did a lot of things for me outside of the water. For instance, I was able to get my ball that was stuck on a 20-foot tree.

When I use it in my boat, it engages in various tasks. Docking and taking my boat out are both effortless. I don’t have to struggle with protecting my boat as it doesn’t bump or collide on pilings. Whenever I drop something in the water, I can get it back with little complications. There’s no need to look for numerous rope hooks for boats as this does the job well.

  • With the highest quality among boat hook poles
  • With a one-year warranty
  • Can be in three different lengths
  • With reliable manual lock and non-slip hand grip
  • Floating ability is only within 5 minutes

The length of this telescopic boat hook is great to take in small boats as its shortest is 42 inches. Still, you won’t be disappointed with its maximum reach, which is around 92 inches. You can lock it in three sizes. I can hold this pole with one or both hands thanks to the specially designed handle for easy handling.

I owe this multipurpose telescoping boat hook a lot when I go sailing. It helps me with many things aside from docking because its threaded end allows various attachments. Amazingly, it serves as another arm for a quadriplegic. It brings so much ease every time I pull in and out of the dock. Dropping by at refueling docking stops and recovering fishing jugs from the water have never been easier!

I also admire its smoothness, which is similar to a traditional wooden pole. It’s easy to twist and untwist when doing some adjustments. Things in the boat are not under my control all the time. A crew member sometimes forgets to tighten the extension but it doesn’t slip when working on docking lines. So, I can say that it’s exceptional among boat hooks for rope in the market. That’s why the manufacturer is confident to provide a lifetime warranty.

  • Can be in three, various sizes
  • Multipurpose with its threaded tip
  • Smooth to make adjustments and lock
  • Lightweight, floatable, and durability with a lifetime warranty
  • Nylon hook returns to normal shape when jammed
  • Can only handle a fair amount of strength and pressure

This Star Brite boat hook has served many purposes, which is why it’s one of my favorites. I don’t need to test other mooring hooks for boats as it’s functional every time I dock and leave from the marina. It also helped me reach things and avoid obstacles. Besides grabbing lines, it can be used for other tasks outside the boat.

Although this extending boat hook is always exposed to saltwater, no rust occurs to cause malfunctions between closing and opening the pole. It’s also good to use in freshwater, especially for pulling fishing noodles from the river. Its minimum length is four feet but it can extend to eight feet. This length is enough for me but I wish that it allows for a different attachment as I sometimes like to use a smaller hook.

Even so, I have never encountered issues with the fast locking mechanism and its strength even though I pulled things hard. Furthermore, it can handle the stress applied when clinging on a surface or snagging dock. These wonderful qualities are thanks to its marine-grade aluminum build.

The hook on its tip is also well made of unbreakable glass with reinforced nylon. Being durable doesn’t make it hard to use. It’s lightweight and comfortable on the hands so it’s not inconvenient at all.

  • Serve many purposes in a boat and other situations
  • Good for both saltwater and freshwater use
  • Has enough strength and a good locking mechanism
  • Made of good materials to handle stress in some tasks
  • Durable, lightweight, and comfortable on the hands
  • Can float for a few minutes
  • Can’t attach a smaller hook

three yachts hooks

The outstanding quality of this boat hook is not only great for regular vessels but also larger boats. You may get it with a telescoping pole that doesn’t disappoint because it has a long reach. As a tall guy, my shoulders don’t get strained easily when pulling lines, anchoring with other boats, and leaving the dock.

It’s also reliable in checking water depth, especially when you don’t trust the transducer. You can put it at a length that meets your needs. Despite the various lengths, the twist-lock mechanism guarantees security.

Though the threaded tip is limited to ¾ inches, it remains versatile. You have to unscrew when you need to replace the tip with other stuff. My wife was so happy about it since she can connect the pole with a mop or a standard broom for cleaning the house. It seems that it has a universal threaded tip as you can attach the hook to various poles.

My previous hooks make me feel nervous every time they fall overboard. But not this one does not as it floats. I can easily detect its location due to its bright blue color. I’m not clumsy but I need to make sure that I don’t have to buy a new boat hook from time to time. I know it can serve me for many years thanks to its durability.

  • Suitable for all sizes of boats
  • With long reach
  • Used in boats, cleaning the house, and more
  • Float and can easily be detected with its bright blue color
  • Durable to serve for many years
  • The threaded tip is limited to ¾ inches

Recognizing the usefulness of this product, I can say that it’s one of the top-rated boat hooks in the market. There’s nothing to complain about its 6063 aluminum tubing that comes with maintenance-free service and a glass-reinforced nylon hook. I witness that the hook is sturdy every time it clasps on something.

This dock hook for a boat is not only favorably solid but also designed for convenience and optimal ease of use. I feel comfortable holding it since it’s lightweight and the non-slip grip makes it secure. Based on my experience, it’s fine to hold in one hand. Docking and undocking is a breeze because of it. With its 4 or 7 feet in length, I don’t need to hoist myself when reaching for things.

I haven’t encountered issues when collapsing the pole and extending it. The rubber handle prevents the cap from sliding down when putting it in its short length. During expansion, you won’t be bothered as the locking system is pretty good.

When boat owners look for boat hook options, floatability is one of the important features. This proves as a functional boat hook but you need to devote time and effort to maintain its buoyancy.

  • Pole solid construction and hook sturdiness
  • Designed for convenience and ease of use
  • Works with one hand
  • No issues when collapsing and extending the pole
  • Work on making it buoyant

I didn’t regret buying this boat pole hook; it’s worth every penny considering the level of quality. The anodized aluminum construction has resistance against rust for long-term service. Unlike other boat hooks, it doesn’t bend or come apart when being used. Its versatility is promising as well since it’s not only useful in boats but also in homes, pools, and RVs.

The pole length can be 5 or 9 feet long. It’s an essential tool whenever I push and pull my boat to dock or leave the slip. Aside from helping me keep my boat safe from scratches and damages, it’s useful in cleaning. Its length allows me to get into sections that are hard to reach. Thus, I don’t need to bend too low.

When it comes to holding this long boat hook, I can attest to the better grip since it’s oval-shaped. The head is interchangeable so you can turn it into a cleaning tool or other things. Of course, the boat hook tip has a lot to offer.

  • High-quality construction
  • Has resistance against rust for long term service
  • Doesn’t bend or come apart when being used
  • Versatile as it’s used in different places and situations
  • Oval-shaped for better grip
  • Has an interchangeable head
  • The ball-like parts on the hook can grab unintended things

three yachts hooks

The length of this telescopic, extendable boat hook is useful and convenient in so many ways! You can expand it to 6.75 feet for docking, reaching things, and a lot more. It can collapse into a manageable size to save some space, too. Thus, I can keep it in my rod holder.

It’s relatively lightweight and not heavy to carry. There’s a lanyard on the handle so you can hold it even when your hands are slippery. Due to the foam on the handgrip, it ensures comfort.

It doesn’t only work on the usual case of docking and leaving the slip. I’m amazed at how it continues with the task even when there’s a strong current or wind at the docking area. You can trust it in poorweather. Thanks to its strength that comes from rust-resistant,heavy-duty metal. Furthermore, it suits every boating lifestyle.

It’s the right boat hook for fishing on floats and I typically use it to get things from my pontoon. Its usage is not limited to boats; it has other purposes such as hanging things. However, you have to make sure that it’s tight before using it. It collapsed once when I was trying to reach a mooring line on the other side. I realized that I didn’t give much attention to tightening it.

  • Telescopic to reach things and can collapse for easy storage
  • Lightweight, comfortable, and anti-slip
  • Not bothered by strong current or wind
  • Has plenty of strength from heavy-duty metal
  • Suits every boating lifestyle
  • Has floating ability for easy retrieval
  • It can collapse when not tightened before use

There are a lot of telescoping boat hooks in the market but this is my favorite. The enjoyment of sailing and fishing is not ruined because of it. Therefore, this is a marine accessory worth investing in. Its appearance reminds me of a West Marine boat hook but I think it’s much better.

The top-quality aluminum tubing is spectacular because it remains tough despite exposure to harsh conditions. So, there’s no question about its durability even though I use it often. Surprisingly, it’s very lightweight despite the strength that it shows. Hence, it’s handy when I go fishing alone. I always use it when pulling my pontoon to get closer to the dock.

I’m glad to have discovered that this is not only for the marine environment but also on land. It works like a cane as it helps me with my balance when I walk over a floating dock. My mom loves it as she’s able to tend bird feeders in her yard. It’s an ideal reach bar due to its rubber vinyl grip.

It contracts to a size that doesn’t demand too much storage space. I find the 5.5 feet extension sufficient for my boating needs. Boat hooks can get wet since it’s for sailing or fishing. With its molded ribbing, I don’t have problems twisting and grabbing it even if the pole gets wet.

  • Has top-quality aluminum tubing
  • Remains tough and durable despite exposure to harsh conditions
  • Used for other things aside from the marine environment
  • Contract and extend up to 5.5 feet
  • With molded ribbing to easily grab and twist the wet pole
  • Doesn’t mar or leave scratches
  • Not floatable

I have had wonderful experiences with this uniquely designed 3-in-1 Shurhold boat hook. A basic boat hook, centered push-off, and a line carrying feature constitute this tool. It has an exclusive style that is not only for retrieving and setting dock lines. It’s lovely as it helped me get through a tight slip. I use it in making a boat loop just like what a Robship hook can do, as I have read from the Orbold dock hook review.

When you need to grab a handrail or shroud, you have to twist the end prongs. I can attest that this is useful in passing things to another person. I can use this hook to pick trash that floats in the water! It’s also used to check the water depth. As you can see, it’s undeniably multipurpose.

You can connect the pole or the hook to other Shurhold items. It favors users since you have the freedom to choose the length you need for large boats and even smaller boats. It’s a breeze to remove the head for replacement. Take note that the hook alone can float but it won’t once it’s connected with the pole. It’s not a problem with me as I’m careful.

  • Uniquely designed 3-in-1 boat hook
  • Can make a boat loop
  • Undeniably multipurpose in the boat and other situations
  • Can connect either the pole or the hook to other Shurhold items
  • Well-made ad rugged to serve for many years
  • The hook won’t float when it’s together with the pole

three yachts hooks

I know that boat hooks are made for multi-purpose but this one takes it to a higher level. Due to its pushing and pulling patented design, there are a lot of things that you can do. That’s why it’s very handy when you’re above the waters. You can depend on it for things other than docking properly and safely, like hanging Christmas lights.

I tried using it to clean the rain gutter and pull down moss or palm husks. It seems that the capability of this hook is limitless. I say so because I was able to get into all the hard-to-reach areas, as well.

I studied the whole thing and I confirmed that you can link it with an ACME thread pole, threaded pole, telescoping pole, and broom handle. It’s great that there’s a screw to secure the hook. I tried using it right after assembling. The stopper got stuck in the pole extension but it was easy to fix. Good thing that it only occurred once. I guess it happens during first-time use.

The structure of this telescopic pole hook is terrific. It’s made of non-rusting zinc alloy that is solid and fire-proof. Since I looked at it closely, I can say that the hardware parts are high quality as well. Thus, this is one of the sturdiest boat hooks that you can find.

  • Multi-purpose into a higher level
  • Gives access to hard-to-reach areas
  • The hook can be attached to different poles
  • Terrific structure of non-rusting, fire-proof, and solid zinc alloy
  • One of the sturdiest boat hooks
  • Suits larger boats with 12 ft or 24 ft Doca poles
  • The stopper can get stuck in the pole extension during first-time use

three yachts hooks

Apart from taking care of the mooring lines by using the handle as a hook, I can use it as a paddle.

I can adjust it from 26 to 72 inches. I put it in its shortest form to make it handy when keeping it in my small sailboat. It won’t get in your way since it only takes up a little space. It can even fit in the front box of a jet ski.

It also suits my friend’s deep boat as its length can be extended. But the length extension is much longer than the usual boat hook.

This item is well-made. Corrosion-resistant aluminum is used for the tubing and the molded paddle is tough. As a result, it can survive marine use. But I have to grind and sand it before I start using it. It’s just a trivial process for the benefits that I gain from it. It’s not only useful for boating and fishing but also water sports.

  • Can be extended up to 72 inches; longer than the usual type
  • Compact so it’s convenient to keep it in your boat
  • Well-made with high quality
  • Can be used for water sports
  • Sturdy but lightweight
  • Can help during an emergency
  • Need to grind and sand before using

Types of Boat Hooks

It’s best to know more about boat hooks before you buy one. In this way, you can choose from boat hook options. The main types of boat hooks are wooden boat hook poles and telescoping marine boat hook poles. It all depends on your preference and boating lifestyle.

The wooden type is sturdier than the telescopic ones but it’s quite heavy, especially when you carry it for a long period. Even so, you can use it for dredging, retrieving things, and boat maneuvering. Another downside is that it doesn’t retract since it’s in a fixed length. It will be a challenge to store for some users.

You can also rely on the telescopic type that’s typically made of aluminum, which is a material that adapts to the marine environment. It is adjustable, lightweight, functional, and easy to store.

A plastic hook head is also available. Some boat hooks are made of stainless or rubber. Others have a soft vinyl top to not harm the hull.

Benefits of Getting a Premium Boat Hook

  • Can be used for roping , anchoring lines, and mooring
  • Makes it easy to make a boat loop, grab a gear bag, and fend off at a berth
  • Is straightforward to set up
  • Can retrieve wires in various sizes
  • Can float so it doesn’t get lost easily

boat-dock-hook

A boat hook is a vital piece of boating equipment. It looks like a pike pole but is designed with a blunt tip for pushing when docking or undocking. It’s also handy when a boat owner separates the boat from the anchor.

When you drop something in the water, it can help you with the retrieval. You’ll find it effective in fetching tasks once you know how to use a boat hook.

The basic boat hook length is 4 feet or 6 feet. The telescoping type typically allows adjustments of 8 feet to 12 feet. The standard length is applicable when accessing things, docking, and fending. But there are variations depending on how and where you will use the boat hook.

Do you ever think of a DIY boat hook? When you spend a lot of time at the dock, you would notice boaters settling for a makeshift hook. They may opt for a shovel but it’s not ideal for the purpose. It’s still advisable to get a boat hook.

The best boat hook makes a difference in your sailing experience. Comfort, convenience, and trouble-free movements are the remarkable benefits you can gain from it. So, you will just focus on enjoying every moment in the trip.

Best boat hook for catching a mooring buoy

Fox Morgan

  • April 18, 2023

Tech Editor Fox Morgan shares their top tips for the best boat hook for catching a mooring buoy and other jobs around your boat.

boathooks

What’s the best boat hook? Well that depends. There’s never just one is there…

I don’t know about you, but I have a love hate relationship with my current boat hooks onboard my sailboat. I have two different aluminium boat hooks

three yachts hooks

The long fixed length one, required for hooking buoys and anything that falls overboard lives in my lazarette and has to be carefully slid past a gas pipe and other snaggable items. I swear at it regularly and curse my lack of long pole stowage options.

The other boat hook I’ve got is a telescoping one that fits on the coach roof or under the sprayhood and is used for pulling the top section when dropping the main sail. It’s constantly getting jammed with salt water and doesn’t want to telescope. I swear at it regularly.

Deployment of boat hooks on my boat usually results in some form of cursing.

Revolve Boat Hook

Read our review of the Revolve boat hook

Best boat hook for tiny stowage

Specifications : Length – fixed 190cm (15cm when rolled) | Pole material – carbon | Handle material – foam | Hook material – plastic

Reasons to buy: light weight | tiny rolled size fits in the smallest of spaces | plastic end less likely to damage boat fittings, alternative attachments available Reasons to avoid: takes a few seconds to unroll and prepare | might be a little long for some jobs

I recently tested this boat hook and I have to say I was very impressed with how light and agile it was when unrolled.

You can do it slowly or if you’re feeling energetic then a quick flick of the arm and the pole is unrolled within 2 seconds.

You basically unravel the first bit with the foam which is the handle. Take a firm grip and swing it wildly like your wielding a light sabre or a sword.

When stowed coiled up the hook slots in to the middle on a small metal peg holding everything together. Just make sure you remember to remove the hook first if you’re going for the rapid deployment method! The pole floats but the hook doesn’t. I haven’t sworn at this one yet, so that’s a pretty good sign.

Lalizas Telescopic Boat Hook with 2 Ends

Best boat hook for pulling down sail slides

Specifications : Length – 65cm – 100cm | handle material – aluminium | hook material – plastic

Reasons to buy : light weight, short stowed size, plastic end less likely to damage boat fittings Reasons to avoid : when telescoped this is a still a short pole, twist lock can get furred up with salt

This is my least cursed at boat pole. That’s probably because it’s really short and stowed under the sprayhood where I can grab it quick. I use this triple hooked end most specifically for the small curved hook. I slip this this between my mast and main sail allowing me to pull my sail slides down easily without scratching the mast. I can save myself climbing up the mast step to pull down the slack halyard with this too.

It’s a bit short for MOB drills as it doesn’t reach the water, but it can be handy for hooking a line from a pontoon or for grabbing and holding on to a filthy ladder in a lock while I throw a line up top or other jobs like that. This is my second one of these as my previous one was washed overboard during some particularly sporty conditions in the Celtic sea. So make sure it’s lashed down securely if stowed outside.

SANLIKE Telescopic Boat Hook

Specifications : Available in blue and gunmetal | length – telescopic 60cm – 140cm | handle material – aluminium | hook material – plastic

Reasons to buy : light weight | compact stowage size | plastic end less likely to damage boat fittings Reasons to avoid : You can’t use the pole fully extended to push things due to the decreased tube diameter on the full extension | the telescoping mechanism can get fouled with salt water

There’s no shortage of telescoping poles on the market (pardon the pun) so we picked three of the type we’ve used personally. This one has a little quirk of a light up blob that fastens to the hook so you can see it in the dark.

It telescopes in length from a tiny 60cm which I find incredibly handy for hooking the head of my sail down with to a longer but not very long 140cm. This is ok for hooking things from the water if you have a smaller boat. If you have a boat with high topsides or a lot of freeboard then you will be needing a longer pole than this one.

What I find a pole like this one handy for is flicking my lines around a cleat on the pontoon or for hooking things that are just our of arms reach to save me from leaning over the water unsafely.

Five Oceans Telescoping Boat Hooks

Best boat hook for budget/value

Specifications : weight 680grams | length – 120cm to 210cm | handle material – aluminium | hook material – plastic

Reasons to buy : light weight | stows easily | plastic end less likely to damage boat fittings Reasons to avoid : telescopic poles are difficult to use to push things with | the telescoping mechanism can get fouled with salt water

This is a really popular boat hook and can be seen on a great many boats across US and Europe. I suspect mostly due to the budget friendly nature of it and it’s do everything appeal.

It features that universally familiar twist lock opening and closing cam that allows extension or shortening of the pole. This isn’t without flaws as that cam can become salt encrusted with time so if you hook is going to live outside or get a dousing then make sure you rinse it to avoid the cam jamming up or becoming sticky. The double hook is useful for pulling as well as snaking lines around it to grab hold of a loose rope.

three yachts hooks

Hook & Moor Telescopic boat hook model 2019

Best boat hook for mooring buoys/rings

Specifications : length – 1m when in stowage mode. 1.8m when in use. (available inn longer lengths up to 320cm) | handle material – aluminium | hook material – plastic and metal

Reasons to buy : stows easily | sturdy hook end | efficient for catching mooring rings and automatically feeding rope through it Reasons to avoid : has a specific single use so not suitable for fending off or pulling halyards etc.

This hook has a designated purpose and if you, like me spend a fair bit of time going on and off of buoys, it can make life a bit quicker and mean you have to spend less time on your belly, up on the bow feeding a line through the mooring buoy ring.

It’s useful to feed a line around any cleat or ring actually so it can save a jump to a pontoon too if you have a good aim.

I did find it a bit of a fiddle at first and had to re-arm it a couple of times after my aim was off. the weight of the pole is considerably more than those others in this buyers guide, mainly due to the sturdy mechanical hook end.

If you have a larger sail boat with high freebaord there’s a longer length 3.2m version that will enable easier mooring buoy hooking.

three yachts hooks

Lahnakoski Pine / Metal Boat Hook

Best boat hook for simplicity

Specifications : length –  3 options 180cm, 240cm, 300cm | handle material – pine wood | hook material – metal | rubber end

Reasons to buy : solid wooden pole, sturdy metal hook, great for pushing with as well as hooking. Reasons to avoid : harder to stow a long fixed pole, metal hook can damage delicate boat fittings.

A wooden boat hook is a lovely thing to hold if it is nicely varnished and maintained. There’s nothing to go wrong with a simple wooden boat pole apart from keeping an eye on the metal hook for signs of corrosion if you choose the metal hook option. This pole can also be fitted with a plastic hook which a lower cost option. I’ve always preferred a solid pole where possible. It feels stable and secure. The trouble can be in the safe stowage though so some boats have these mounted at a back stay or up against a vertical mount near the helm position. If you were trying to hook a MOB or pet over board (POB), then I’d be a lot happier having the option of a solid pole than a smaller telescoping pole. Get the longest you feel you can handle. don’t scrimp in length!

three yachts hooks

Trem Cadet Telescopic Boathook

Best boat hook for visibility

Specifications : Available in red or white | length – telescopic 120 to 210cm | handle material – aluminium | hook material – plastic

Reasons to buy : light weight, stows easily, plastic end less likely to damage boat fittings Reasons to avoid : telescopic poles are difficult to use to push things with, the mechanism can get fouled with salt water

Most boat hooks come in plain alumium and wood colours. So it’s a refreshing change to see one that is er, easy to see. A red boat hook is much easier to find amongst an array of similar looking aluminium poles, dinghy paddles and so on.

The telescoping Boat hook stows at its smallest length 120cm and extends up to 210cm which is long enough for most jobs. The pole extends by twisting to unlock and relock. Extending poles are most useful for retrieving thongs from the water and for pulling down on sail slides or halyards that are hard to reach. They’re also useful for hooking a mooring buoy, but this one will require on your own dexterity to pull a line through a mooring loop as it has a standard plastic double hook end. Whilst you can push smaller boats away from a dockside with this pole, you are unlikely to want to put a lot of load through that push, else you will find your pole starting to shorten as it might reach the limit of the twist grip clamp on the telescoping mechanism.

In Search of the Ultimate Boat Hook

Plastic hooks snap, crackle, pop in test of strength and utility..

three yachts hooks

The basic design of the humble boat hook hasn’t changed much over the years, but it has seen upgrades in construction and materials, along with some minor design tweaks. For this report, we set out to determine what constitutes the ideal boat hook. We evaluated boat hooks currently on the market and took a look at some old models still in service.

Most modern boat hooks come with put-or-take hooks at the tip. These feature a secondary, forward-facing hook of variable size for placing a loop over a piling (put), as well as the standard, aft-facing hook (take).

14-foot Heavy-duty Boat Hook from West Marine

Theres not much required to create a good put hook, but designing a durable take hook requires some thought. It needs to be strong enough to heave with, yet still slim enough to slip under a line; a cheap, plastic hook simply wont do.

The question of the ideal boat-hook length is often debated in sailing circles. Six feet is a minimum, in our opinion, and 12 feet is adequate for almost any boat. Telescoping poles give you the stowability of the shorter pole with the boosted reach of a longer pole, and they can serve double-duty as mop/deck-brush handles, but as we found in our test, telescoping poles are less foolproof than fixed poles. For the full-time cruiser with adequate room for a fixed-length pole, it will undoubtedly last longer with fewer hassles.

An 8-foot boat hook is a good compromise, but if youve got room to stow a 12-footer-especially on a bigger boat-you will find good use for it. The ideal inventory, in our view, is a fixed pole for routine docking and use as a deck-brush handle, and a telescoping 12-footer for situations requiring long reach. Unfortunately, the brush-handle versions we tested were not impressive.

The following is a summary of the testing; for more detailed information on each of the poles, see the Inside Practical Sailor blog post The Blow-by-Blow Boathook Test. “

Boat Hooks

What We Tested

For this test, we looked at 15 boat hooks-telescoping and non-telescoping-from five manufacturers: Davis Instruments, Garelick, Sea-Dog, Seachoice, and West Marine. The selection included a tiny 25-inch model, emergency paddle hooks, and a 14-foot monster that reached halfway across the neighboring slip.

How We Tested

We tested the hooks in the lab and on the water. Testers evaluated telescoping poles for slip when being pulled and pushed, both wet and dry. We also observed whether the poles would float for at least five minutes. We pushed, scuffed, and gouged the poles against a soon-to-be-scrap fiberglass boat, looking for evidence of gelcoat damage.

We then put them to work on our test boat, snagging lines off pilings, and pulling on docks and toerails. Once the field testing was complete, we took one of each model and bent it over a soft edge 48 inches back from the tip until it would no longer telescope. This showed testers whether the pole would still be useful after getting bent or stepped on.

  • Davis Instruments

All of the Davis poles share the same very strong, dexterous hook, a key plus. Its hooks were undamaged in our pull testing. While we like the idea of a hook-cum-deck brush, threaded tips offer little advantage due to their inadequacy for placing lines. Testers found the telescoping action to be the smoothest and most dependable; however, we do wish Davis made a non-telescoping pole.

Paddle hook: Any small-boat sailor would understand why a paddle needs a hook; in light winds, both tools are useful aids in getting you back to the dock. These arent meant to be used as regular oars, but they are effective as emergency paddles on small boats, and the bright orange blade makes an effective, short-range distress signal. Davis also makes a regular paddle (4330) that we like better as a paddle, as its shorter and the rounded handle is more comfortable to use.

Bottom line: We like dual-purpose products that work. The Davis hooked paddles (models 4372 and 4330) are Recommended for small dinghies or trailer-sailers as emergency paddles.

Telescoping boat hooks: Davis offers several sizes of telescoping poles (models 4122, 4132, and 4152). Featuring the same compact, strong hook, smooth locking mechanism, and lightweight design, these were our favorites in this category. Theres nothing flashy about these boat hooks, but they tick all the right boxes and held up well.

Bottom line: Davis has put some attention to detail in these telescoping hooks, which stood out above the others, earning the Best Choice pick.

One of our favorite, non-telescoping, aluminum poles is made by Garelick, and weve been it using for over 20 years. The thick-walled stick has survived the test of time extremely well, better than a lot of other gear that saw much less use. Sadly, Garelick doesn’t make that model anymore (it does offer a different fixed-length design though), so we checked out the companys telescoping Premium Twist-lock (55170/02) and Tri-tube (552901) models.

Premium Twist-lock: Testers liked the above-average, twist-lock mechanism on Garelicks premium telescoping boat hook; it was not difficult to lock down beyond any reasonable push or pull. But the hook gave way under energetic pulling, snapped when used to pry, and it was clumsy fetching lines.

Bottom line: This is an adequate boat hook, but its performance in our tests was middle of the road.

Tri-tube: Unique in the group, this pole uses a spring pin to lock the pole in extension rather than the typical twist-lock mechanism. The usual twist-and-hunt routine to find the pin is avoided by using a rounded triangular tube section, ensuring that as the pole is extended, the pin will always drop into place.

During testing, however, the pin lock fell out of position when the pole was dropped, leaving us with a non-functional boat hook. Corrosion was also a problem with this pole, and it bent and jammed where others did not. The poles thread would not screw into the commonly available marine-grade deck brushes that we tested it with.

Bottom line: Although it appears robust, the Tri-tube was the only hook to bend in ordinary use. Garelick makes fixed-length boat hooks (55004, 55006, and 55008) in this line, which would surely not suffer the same problems.

As we often find, one manufacturer often does a good job with one design element but doesn’t match the others in a more critical feature, and this was the case with the Seachoice boat hook.

Telescoping boat hook: The telescoping Seachoices (model 71050) low-profile tip was the only one tested that would pickup a line off the dock with either the tip or the hook. It also passed the strength test with flying colors. The test unit survived being stowed on deck for 15 years, proving its durability. This model is still in production.

Bottom line: This is the cheapest hook in our test. It will serve the average boater fine, but it is not up to the rigors that a fixed-length pole will endure. It gets the Budget Buy pick.

Sea-Dog Line

Sea-Dog poles mate only with Sea-Dog brushes, which is a drawback in our opinion. They have the best hand grips, but the hook tips were not as strong as others during hard pulling. The hooks are rubber-coated all around, which makes them a little more secure for fending or grabbing a toerail. The downside is that they do not easily slide along a line, which was occasionally awkward. Since you can’t have it both ways, this compromise is a matter of taste.

Fixed length: The fixed pole models (491012-1 and 491013-1) got the job done, but the hook fell short of expectation, bending when others did not.

Bottom line: Recommended. This boat hook will hold up to ordinary use, but the hook could be stronger.

Telescoping pole: The telescoping mechanism in Sea-Dogs models (491036-1, 491021-1, and 491024-1) featured a knurled grip at each joint that locked securely and easily. In fact, it required the lightest twist of those tested. However, the twist-lock became noticeably stiff from corrosion and salt deposits after a few months, and eventually jammed due to exposure to rainwater. Additionally, we consider the hook to be under strength.

Bottom line: There are better choices.

  • West Marine

West Marines role as the nations largest marine retailer has given it plenty of opportunity to learn what works and what doesn’t in boat gear.

Fixed Length: For day-to-day use, we like a sturdy, one-piece pole. We spotted two of these poles on cruising boats that had been bent by people stepping on them. Not surprisingly, they still worked, supporting our preference for simple tools. Unfortunately, the clunky head on the West Marine model (6867840) isn’t as good as others for grabbing lines.

Bottom line: This is a suitable one-piece pole. The price is competitive, too. Recommended.

Telescoping: West Marines telescoping poles (8243123 and 71050) featured an average locking mechanism, a strong but bulky tip, and both the hook and pole held up well in our strength testing. This, combined with their relatively light weight, add up to an average, but very usable pole.

Bottom line: Recommended.

Heavy-duty Boat hook: Extendable to 14 feet, the West Marine Heavy-duty hook (7784267) is the longest of the group, and you certainly can do some burly pushing with it-though you will need some strong arms to control it. Adding two feet to a boat hook is a bit like Nigel in the movie Spinal Tap, touting a guitar amplifier that goes to 11 instead of 10. The extra reach isn’t that much greater than that of a 12-foot pole, especially for a smaller person who will have to broaden his or her stance to support its weight when fully extended.

We were disappointed to see the tip bend when we hauled hard, and surprised when the rubber guard split as it slid off the toerail. West Marine was smart to leave the Acme thread off; this isn’t a pole that you are going to use for deck washing. It is noticeably stiffer and stronger than other poles.

Bottom line: This is a heavy-duty pole, but the bendy tip and added weight pushed it out of the running as a favorite.

Sea-Dog design

Traditional hooks

Just for fun, we tested two old hooks we had lying about.

Plain aluminum hook: We found this no frills, plain, 6-foot boat hook by a dumpster 20 years ago. It outperformed all but the Davis hooks in general utility. This is why it remained our standard hook for so long; we like no frills.

Bottom line: Our experience with this hook confirms that simple can be good.

Crabbers hook: Although about twice as heavy as the equivalent aluminum poles, this 10-foot, wood pole with an iron hook was also over twice the strength of any other pole, proving that wood remains a good construction material for boat hooks. The iron hook has the potential to scratch fiberglass, but it grips a piling better and was one of the few hooks adept at handling line in tests. Sea-Dog and others sell smaller bronze hooks for sailors who prefer to make their own boat hooks.

Bottom line: Proof that a traditional wooden pole is still a valid option.

Conclusions

These boat hooks were closely matched, so the data itself tells only part of the story. On the water is where a single winner really shined. By the end of the summer, testers realized we were always reaching for the same pole: the Davis Instruments telescoping boat hooks. The company offers a length for every purpose in its three models: 4122, 4132, and 4152. They are light, durable, and the telescoping action is easy and fast. The thin take hook and compact head make it easy to snatch a line off a piling singlehanded.

Despite the advantages of a telescoping pole, our testers prefer fixed-length poles. While the telescoping poles will survive being stepped on, so long as they are collapsed when not in use, the one-piece poles still work even when bent. We didnt like the idea of putting extra padding on the tip. Were on a boat, not a porcelain vase. A plastic hook isn’t going to scratch anything, and adding a cover made us feel like a butler with white gloves.

The extra rubber on the Sea-Dog and the West Marine Heavy-duty hooks made pulling along a lifeline and fending a little more secure, but they were more clumsy when handling lines, a trade-off that may come down to use and personal preference. We much preferred a pole we could hold out with one hand-weight is important, especially when reaching out to lay a line on a piling. Light and basic won the day.

Adding and removing a brush-head turned out to be more of a hassle than wed imagined, and the scrub brush thread is not as good as a proper hook for snagging a line from a piling. We returned to a plain 4-foot broom handle for deck washing.

The classic-boat owner should consider a wooden pole with a bronze tip. Yes, it is a little heavier and the tip could mark something if mishandled, but they are relatively light, stiff, potentially beautiful, and will out-live the boat if properly maintained. Fitting the bronze hook and finishing the pole, perhaps with some fancy work, sounds like a pleasant winter project.

There are many more boat hooks on the market than we could test. If you find one in a store that you like, its easy enough to give it quick trial. Find something you can hook it onto. Can you lift your own weight? Does the tip bend or the locking mechanism slip? Can you pick a three-quarter-inch line off the floor with the tip or hook? Can you hold it out with one hand? If it passes all these tests, it is probably good for the job, although passing the durability test can only happen with time.

In Search of the Ultimate Boat Hook

1.The Garelick Tri-tube head was the strongest, but it was also the only one that would scratch gelcoat.

2.The tip on the Davis poles were the only ones that could pick up a line off a dock. It earned its “unbreakable” billing.

3.The head on the fixed-length boat hook from West Marine held up well during our stress test.

4.The locking pin on the Garelick Tri-tube was easy to use, but it unexpectedly released during testing.

5.The tip of the West Marine Heavy-duty boat hook turned out to not be so heavy-duty.

6.The Garelick Twist-lock tip bent during load testing.

In Search of the Ultimate Boat Hook

Some ideas that look good on paper don’t seem so brilliant in execution.

1. The head was a weak link in many of the boat hooks we tested, and although the pole often survived the test, replacement fittings were not an option. Only the Davis tip (bottom) was stronger than the pole, allowing it to still be usable. Our tester was surprised how many of the poles snapped under relatively light loads.

2. Our tester’s old, thick-walled Garelick fixed pole bent, but it could be straightened back out. Several others in our test crumpled beyond repair.

3. Stainless steel and aluminum don’t mix. Without some insulating compound like Tefgel, Duralac, or Lanacote, the locking pins on some designs invite corrosion.

4. The Garelick Tri-tube has an industrial-strength head that is meant to double as a deck brush—except common deck brushes won’t fit.

5. Our brushes didn’t fit the Sea-Dog hook, although a Sea-Dog brush will.

6. Testers like Davis paddle/hook for use aboard engineless, small boats.

Two seasons of use with this Star Brite boat hook, and I’m hooked. My boat sits in a slip in the salt, and no issues with opening and closing this boat hook. Great long reach to grab my dock lines (or push off away from the dock or neighbor’s boat in the wind) and it’s always there at the ready. I bought clips and some velcro strap and it’s always easy to reach when I need it. Quality product.

Great article! The best boat hook makes a difference in my sailing experience. Comfort, convenience, and trouble-free movements are the remarkable benefits I can gain from it. So, I will just focus on enjoying every moment in the trip.

Better Boat Boat Hook

Made with a rubber sturdy bumper, this boat hook can be used with a broom, telescoping pole, or a mop rod. It comes with a screw-on design and doesn’t scratch or damage the hull.

Better Boat Hook is heavy-duty and has metal threads for added strength with a sturdy rubber tip. It locks tight and is made of high-quality materials but still floats if it falls into the water. However, the screw size may not fit some six-foot painter roller rods.

Overall, this is a well-made hook and offers plenty of utility if you can find a compatible pole to use with it.

Boat Hook reviews

Eversprout Boat Hook

This boat hook can withstand hundreds of pounds of pressure and features a galvanized locking mechanism, which prevents it from rusting. It’s made with non-slip foam hand grips for extra control.

The manual clip locks onto the extensions of the Eversprout boat hook. They are strong and the poles feel sturdy. It has an elegant design and is easy to use. The exterior of the material can become scratched and scuffed up, but this doesn’t affect its durability or functionality. The pole is sturdy enough to push/pull up to 30lbs when fully extended, or up to 100lbs in its contracted form.

Rainier Supply Co Boat Hook

Rainier Supply Co Boat Hook is unrivaled in terms of durability because of marine-grade premium aluminum. It has two different handle designs, which you would absolutely adore. Also, it readily allows you to utilize the hook and provides more leverage because of its two-tiered design, particularly when extended fully. Since it doesn’t leave any surface with scratches or scrapes, you will also feel at ease when pressing other items. Additionally, the boat hook is made even more resistant by the strengthened nylon at its end. It can effectively support high weights, enabling you to do all jobs quickly.

Honorable Mention

Boat Hook reviews

Star Brite Boat Hook

This boat hook extends from four to eight feet and is constructed of unbreakable, glass-reinforced nylon. It can be used as a push pole, a pole for docking, and has a lightweight design due to its aluminum construction that makes it very easy to use.

Star Brite boat hook has an excellent reach for grabbing dock lines and for pushing off of the dock. The sturdy design makes it reliable to use and it doesn’t require a lot of effort or strength to extend or retract. The flexible hook can make it challenging to latch onto cleats because it can occasionally bend.

Boat Hook reviews

WindRider Telescoping Boat Hook

This three-part telescopic hook comes with a second grip for easier handling and can reach up to 12-feet in length when fully extended. It can be used to push, pull, and scrub, and has a universal threaded tip.

WindRider boat hook can float in the water and has a long reach to avoid getting too close to the seawall by motoring. It has a telescoping design and can fit in a small storage locker on the deck of the boat, making it easy to store. Some of the sections may fail to lock firmly in place so they can occasionally release, requiring you to adjust the pole length again.

Buyer’s Guide to Finding a Boat Hook

Boat hooks are one of the unsung heroes in the sailing world. While other tools hug all the attention and grab the accolades, the boat hook goes about its work diligently without any fuss or recognition. Perhaps one of the main reasons why boat hooks are often overlooked is the simplicity of the task they carry out. Who rates a long tool when its only job is to hook and unhook mooring ropes ? It is even easy to forget a boat hook exists until that awkward moment where you have to moor your boat, and you can’t find a boat hook. In this moment of truth, you will wish you had treated your boat hook better

Without a boat hook, the mooring process will be a long, tedious process of trial and error. After making a loop with the mooring rope, delivering it accurately around the moor becomes a game of chance. You throw the loop across and hope that everything is in your favor. If not, you try again over and over. A boat hook will complete this task in less than two minutes.

Traditionally, the wooden hook used to be the most popular type of boat hook. The hook consists of a wooden rod with a metallic hook attached to it at the top. More recently, there have been new brands of boat hooks that are not made with wooden rods. The new hooks are made from light aluminum material and have entirely plastic hooks attached to the rod.

Tips For Handling Boat Hooks

Most modern boat hooks feature plastic hooks at the end of the long rod. However, certain types of boat hooks still have a sharp hook covered with plastic at the end of the long rod. Proper care should be taken when handling such hooks to avoid injuries.

What Do I Need To Consider Before Buying Boat Hooks?

To get the best out of boat hooks, there are several factors to consider. Some of these factors include length, storage, flotation ability, and durability.

Since a boat hook is essentially meant to transport mooring ropes over, the length of the hook is the first factor to consider. The longer the hook, the better it is for hooking and unhooking mooring ropes.

Boat hooks are not tools that you use once and forget about. They will come in handy for many docking and undocking episodes; hence, they should be durable enough to withstand the rigors of long-term use. One significant way to ensure durability is to check the quality of materials used to manufacture the hook.

Floatation ability

It is not news that boat hooks will be used mainly on water, and mistakes do happen. If a mistake happens and you drop the boat hook into the water, it should float. Not all boat hooks float; some fall and sink immediately. A boat hook that floats makes it easy for you to recover it in case of such an occurrence. It saves you the cost of getting a new one every time it drops.

Multipurpose

A boat hook serves one essential purpose of helping you dock and undock a boat. However, there are boat hooks that go one better; these types of boat hooks double as mini-paddles. Therefore they could come in handy when you need to lightly paddle. These types of boat hooks are cost-saving as they save you the extra cost of getting a paddle.

Wooden boat hooks vs. Aluminum boat hooks

The choice between wooden boat hooks and aluminum boat hooks boils down to preference. Aluminum boat hooks are lighter than wooden boat hooks. However, many are more comfortable with wooden hooks and find the switch to aluminum boat hooks unnecessary.

Telescoping boat hooks vs. non-telescoping boat hooks

Another feature to look out for when buying a boat hook is whether the hook is telescopic or not. A telescoping boat hook’s length is adjustable so that when not in use, it can be adjusted to a shorter length for easy storage. A non-telescoping boat hook does not have this feature and may be hard to store when not in use.

Lock mechanism

The lock mechanism factor only applies to telescoping boat hooks. After elongating the hook’s length for use, the hook may start curling back to its previous short length without a lock mechanism in place. A good lock mechanism will lock the hook at the desired length and keep it there till the lock is deactivated. Thus, when choosing a telescoping boat hook, you should check well to ascertain it has a good lock mechanism.

How Much Do Boat Hooks Cost?

The average price of aluminum boat hooks ranges from $15 to $35. Also, the price of wooden boat hooks ranges from $11 to $28.

Final Thoughts On Boat Hooks

Boat hooks are best stored horizontally in a corner of the boat where they cannot be stepped on. When a boat hook gets matched often, it spoils the rod.

If kept vertically, the hook may fall, and repeated falls may damage the rod. A damaged rod makes the boat hook entirely useless.

People Also Asked

If you have a boat, yes, you need a boat hook. Apart from its well-known use in docking, it is also useful when retrieving items thrown overboard. Instead of diving in and getting wet, the hook does the job seamlessly.

Wooden boat hooks are generally not floatable. However, there are new brands of wooden hooks being made now that are floatable. These wooden hooks are designed in such a way that the hook end of the rod points downward when drowning, leaving the rod standing upright.

The two types of boat hooks are good since they both perform their intended tasks well. However, aluminum hooks have an edge over wooden hooks because they are relatively lighter and can be easily stored.

How to Tie a Three Hook Flapper Rig

Three hook flapper.

The three hook flapper rig is a short to medium distance rig when used for shore fishing. From the boat, it is a general purpose rig mainly for smaller species.

As an alternative to the crimps to secure the swivels, silicon stops can be used which are movable unlike the fixed crimps. Billy Buckley shows one version of  these in use in his video . Coils of telephone wire, wound tightly round the trace body can also be used.

Breakaway Tackle supply an adjustable crimp , these are more bulky and require a specialised crimping tool.

Three Hook Flapper Rig Components

1 x Medium Swivel

6 x 3mm Beads

3 x Snood Swivel

6 x Soft Metal Crimps

1 x Lead Link

Approx. 1 – 1.5 metre length 60-80lb BS main line

3 x 450mm approx lengths 10-20lb BS snood

3 x 6 to 1/0 hooks

The Rig Body

  • Tie on the lead link and thread on the rest of the components in this order; Crimp / Bead / Swivel / Bead / Crimp
  • Repeat for the other two snood swivels.
  • Tie on the swivel or oval split ring to the top of the trace body.
  • Fasten the crimps to the line, the distance apart should ensure that the snoods will not tangle when casting or fishing. Care should be taken when fixing the crimps not to damage the line. Round nose pliers work better than “crimping” pliers.
  • Tie the hooks to the snoods and then to the swivels; the snood lengths should be around 300 – 500 mm depending upon the length of the trace body. If you need to fish with longer snoods then it will be necessary to either lengthen the trace body, which may restrict casting. or reduce the number of snoods to two.
  • Beads and / or sequins can be added to the snoods as attractors before adding the hooks; buoyant beads can be effective on the upper snoods.
  • The breaking strain of the snoods and size of the hooks will depend upon the target species.

Private jet and yachts seized as three arrested in £76m luxury care homes raid

Three people have been arrested as part of a sting by the Serious Fraud Office into property developer the Carlauren Group.

A private jet and two yachts have been seized, as three people have been arrested, in a £76m raid on a group who ran luxury care homes.

Two sites were raided across St Leonard's, Dorset, and Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, as part of the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) probe, supported by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

The investigation is looking into the UK registered property developer, the Carlauren Group, which collapsed into administration in November 2019.

When it folded, the SFO said that it led to some elderly residents being forced to move out, and left 600 investors out of pocket.

The Carlauren Group bought 23 properties across the UK, often former hotels including the historic Windlestone Hall in Durham, and allegedly claimed to offer annual 10 per cent returns to investors as it sought to turn the buildings into high-end care homes.

The SFO raided two sites today

However, the SFO said only nine of these became operational and some continued as hotels instead of care homes.

Alongside that, the group allegedly purchased a number of supercars, including two Lamborghinis and a McLaren 570GT, a private jet and two yachts.

Nick Ephgrave QPM, director of the Serious Fraud Office, said: "This company's abrupt collapse has created turmoil and enormous anxiety for many, with elderly people forced to vacate their homes and investors left with nothing.

"Today's arrests are a major development in our investigation and a step towards getting the answers so many people need."

The group was said to have had 600 people and companies invest in the scheme through the purchase of rooms that were to be rented out to the elderly.

This was inside luxury facilities that boasted of swimming pools, room service and other amenities.

According to the SFO, the rooms were advertised and sold with a guaranteed annual payout and opportunity to sell the asset back for a profit after 10 years

18 Rescued Following Westport Rowing Club Accident At Compo Beach

Eighteen teens and juveniles, in addition to several others, were rescued after three rowing sculls overturned and the chase boat took on water at a Fairfield County beach.

Westport firefighters and other first responders help those impacted out of the water.

The incident occurred off Westport off Compo Beach on Long Island Sound around 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 20.

According to Lt. Eric Woods, of the Westport Police, police, fire and EMS responded to Compo Beach on a report that numerous people were in the water after a boat capsized.

Responding units found a chaotic scene of youths swimming to shore, arriving by boat, and some still in the water near Cockenoe Island.

First Responders immediately began providing care to those who made it to shore and coordinating the recovery of people in the water, Woods said.

While accounting for and locating all the people involved, medical care was provided, and two individuals were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Woods said an initial investigation indicates that three rowing sculls and one chase boat were launched from Saugatuck Rowing Club. Each rowing scull is 60 feet long and holds nine rowers ranging in age from 14 to 18 while the chase boat was operated by their coach.

When the boats reached the area of Cockenoe Island, the weather began to change, and the rowers attempted to return to the rowing club, he said. The sculls began to take on water causing two of them to capsize throwing 18 people into the water.

The group swam to the chase boat and began to hang onto the side of that boat which caused the chase boat to sink as well.

Another chase boat from the rowing club arrived and began to shuttle people to Compo Beach Marina, Woods said.

At the time of the incident, the air temperature was 40 degrees, and the water temperature was 44 degrees.

In total, there were 29 people from the rowing club that were involved in this incident.

The following agencies assisted Westport Emergency Services with this incident:

  • Fairfield Police Marine Division
  • Stamford Police Marine Division
  • Noroton Fire Boat
  • Norwalk Police Marine Division
  • Norwalk Fire Marine Division
  • US Coast Guard

The following Emergency Medical Services provided a combined 8 ambulances and 20 personnel:

  • Norwalk Hospital
  • American Medical Response (AMR)

Westport Board of Education assisted by providing a school bus to transport the individuals from Compo Beach to Saugatuck Rowing Club.

“This was truly a team effort” Westport Police Chief Fotis Koskinas stated. “We are grateful for our surrounding agencies who assisted us with this incident and remind our communities that when a large-scale event, like this, happens we all show up to help.”

BYD expands reach in Europe with best-selling Atto 3, Seal EV launching in Greece

Avatar for Peter Johnson

China’s leading EV maker, BYD , is expanding its presence in Europe by launching its best-selling Atto 3 and Seal in Greece. BYD said more models are launching soon.

BYD expands in Europe, launches two new EVs in Greece

BYD is “just getting started” in Europe, according to the region’s CEO, Michael Shu. After dominating its home market, BYD is taking its best-selling EVs overseas to challenge legacy automakers.

Although BYD began selling EVs in Europe in 2021 (in Norway), the company only sold 15,644 electric cars in the region last year. According to global data collection firm DataForce , that would give BYD a 1.1% share of the European EV market.

In an interview with Automotive News Europe last week, Shu said BYD is just learning “how Europeans respond” to the new tech, products, and services it offers.

Shu highlighted how Europe is a much different market than China or the US, with multiple legislations and languages to work with.

After admitting that ramping sales in the region will take time, Shu said BYD aims to more than triple its market share . Even before it begins producing vehicles at its Hungary plant.

BYD-Greece

BYD aims for a 5% share by then, up from just 1.1% currently. The company’s European boss confirmed the plant will begin production in 2026. To speed up output, it will also build battery packs in Hungary.

Once up and running, the plant will be able to build 150,000 vehicles a year, which can be doubled if needed.

“It will be Europe for Europe,” Shu said, adding, “We will be closer to customers, offering faster deliveries, and people will trust us more.”

BYD-Greece

According to its Weibo page , BYD launched two new EVs in Greece as it expands the brand overseas. BYD launched the Atto 3 and Seal EV, marking its official entry into the Greek passenger auto market.

Last year, BYD’s Atto 3 was its best-selling EV in Europe, with 12,363 models sold. BYD’s Seal was fifth, with 284 vehicles sold, behind the Dolphin (1,079), Tang (1,055), and Han (849).

BYD-EVs

BYD said it will introduce additional vehicles, including the Dolphin, Song Plus EV Champion Edition, and Song Plus DM-i in the future.

Electrek’s Take

Despite BYD’s minor presence in the European EV market, the automaker plans to expand aggressively.

BYD launched a “liberation battle” against gas-powered vehicles earlier this year to drive EV adoption by slashing prices and introducing drastically lower-priced models.

The Atto 3 starts at just $16,644 (119,800 yuan) in China. In Europe, it starts at around $40,000 (37,990 euros). Once its Hungary plant begins production, BYD will be able to cut prices closer to what’s offered in China.

The EV maker has an advantage by building nearly all components in-house, enabling low prices.

According to a new report, BYD is working on its next-gen EV platform , which will further lower costs and promote even cheaper electric models.

In the meantime, BYD’s first auto transport ship docked in Germany last month, carrying around 3,000 vehicles set to hit the European market.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.
