Yacht Party: By Day or Night?

Having a yacht party is a great way to make your bash stand out from the rest. From the breathtaking views and first-class service to the simple fact that you’re aboard a yacht, there are many unique characteristics.

One of the stark differences from a typical event venue is that, once aboard, you’ll enjoy a beautiful cruise on the water–an exciting feature for our clients and their guests. Depending on the time of day, your celebration can bask in the famous Southern California sunshine or sparkle under the night stars. Yacht parties offer a lot of flexibility making them an ideal choice for almost any occasion.

This leads to a question we often hear from our clients: Should we hold our event during the day or at night?

While both have their advantages, there are a few questions to consider first.

How formal is it?

Evaluate the scope of your event. Do you envision cocktail dresses and sharp suits? Formal gowns and classic tuxedos? Then your event is best suited for the evening.

If you’re opting for a more casual feel with a bright, airy vibe then daytime is probably best.

A general rule of thumb is that formal events (e.g. weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, proms, corporate galas , etc.) are planned in the evening while lighter celebrations (e.g. family reunions, baby and bridal showers, engagement and graduation parties, etc.) occur during the day.

Who’s invited?

Scan your guest list and get a sense of the invitees.

Are they early birds? Night owls? Are their weekends filled with work shifts and kid’s soccer games? If you answered “yes,” then a night yacht party will most likely be preferred.

If the group is a little more flexible (i.e. not tied to a specific schedule) then a midday jaunt will probably work just fine.

What’s on the menu?

Decide what you plan to serve your guests. If you’re feeling a three-course sit down dinner complete with bread service and passed hors d’oeuvres, the evening is more appropriate.

Daytime events are a little more comfortable and often call for a more casual setting featuring a fantastic buffet or a gorgeous brunch spread. Either way, food is a MUST for any event and should be served accordingly.

Sunset, stars or sunny skies?

Many clients consider the gorgeous backdrop of the Marina del Rey harbor as an enhanced feature of their event. In this case, clients look forward to a spectacular sunset for amazing photos while others rely on the twinkling lights of the harbor and stars to add a romantic feel.

Our daytime clients really emphasize the sights on the water and enjoy the incomparable views of the Los Angeles coastline–from Catalina Island and the Palos Verdes peninsula all the way to Malibu. Daytime events are also fun for spotting wildlife and seeing other yachts in the harbor.

A nighttime yacht party will have  a different vibe. Depending on the nature of your celebration, dancing and socializing might be more like dancing at a nightclub. Alternatively, for smaller celebrations, the night sky is the perfect backdrop for a luxurious  and intimate experience.

Your choices depend on what your goal is. What do you want to experience with your guests?

Still Not Sure? 

Consider how you want your event to look. For example, enchancements like lighting will produce different looks depending on the time of day. Did you want to do special uplighting? A gobo on the dance floor or on the side of the yacht? If yes, then maybe an evening event is best.

When I had three children, I loved birthday parties. I went all out. I’m not kidding, I spent hours and hours making decorations, planning the decor, and designing invitations. Now I have six kids, and birthday parties are the worst. Not the worst, I take that back, but they aren’t as fun as they used to be. These days, the invitation is usually a text and the party is just a free-for-all at my house with some cupcakes on a table for kids to grab as they please. I’m not even sure I clean the bathroom first.

If you’re a nice mom and want to do something for you children and their friends on birthdays, what are your options? I went ahead and did a little research for you on 10 places in our area (though there are surely more) that might interest you:

  • 360 Gymnastics: Options start at $120 for 90 minutes for 15 children. There’s an extra fee for additional children. What’s included? Entertainment (for an added fee you can add elements to your party like an extra blow-up apparatus or turn your party into a Nerf war), set up (including tablecloth), and a space for parents to hang during the party.   • As You Like it Cakes: This bakery in Lewiston offers birthday parties that start at $50. The basic party provides you with a space for two hours; you provide activities and purchase desserts. For $75, 10 guests get to decorate a cupcake and receive a decorating apron to keep (additional children/guests who decorate are $5 each). The host can bring in decorations, drinks (non-alcoholic) and ice cream. Private parties in which the shop is closed to clients must be held after 6 p.m. or on a Sunday and costs another $30.   • Bonkers Indoor Play Center: Moscow is home to Bonkers, an indoor space that’s available for birthday parties. Parties start at $89 which gives you a private room for one hour to eat cake and open gifts, but the kids can play all day. There is a space for toddlers as well as older kids and several play options (a play structure, play centers, etc). The price covers five children, but more can be added for an additional fee. Hosts literally do nothing but book the party and bring a cake. Bonkers takes care of invitations, set-up, decorations, plates, napkins and drinks. For additional fees, you can add more food or bring your own (nut-free) food to enjoy. To book, call (208) 596-4320.
  • LC Ice Arena: $98 gives you access to a private party room at the ice skating rink in North Lewiston for 90 minutes for 10 children plus the birthday guest of honor. Skate rental is included in the price, and hosts are free to bring cake and decor for the party room.
  • Lancer Lanes in Clarkston has an arcade package that includes 30 game tokens per guest, unlimited soda, and a 500-point game card for the birthday child. That costs $10 per child. A bowling package is also $10 per child and includes two hours of bowling, shoe rental, unlimited soda, and a 500-point game card for the arcade. To book call ( 509) 758-6731.
  • Zeppos in Pullman offers a package for $13 per bowler. It includes two hours of bowling, shoe rental, balloons, a stuffed toy for the birthday guest of honor, soda and water and $5 arcade game cards per guest. To book, call (509) 334-7101.
  • Art Uncorked at the Fourth Wall Art Gallery: Children's birthday parties are a bit different than the regular private parties. $150 covers 10 children and a dozen cupcakes from As You Like it Cakes. Each additional child is $10. The birthday child gets to  pick the artwork, or, with at least two weeks’ notice, a custom piece of art will be created for everyone to paint.   • Wild at Art: For a different spin on a painting party, check out this paint-your-own-pottery shop in Moscow (there’s also a Lewiston location). There isn’t a base price for a birthday party, it all depends on what piece of ‘naked’ pottery the guests choose to paint. Prices for pieces start at $5. Hosts can budget by choosing what guests will paint. Food, decorations and drinks aren’t provided, but are welcome if you’d like to bring anything. Typically, parties last about 90 minutes but can last as long you’d like. Call Mark at (208) 669-2425.
  • Asotin County Family Aquatic Center: Packages for this Clarkston indoor and outdoor aquatic play space start at $100. For that, you get a small party room, themed decorations, indoor admission for 15 party guests and a T-shirt and card for the birthday guest of honor. If you’d like to add party guests, there is an additional fee per guest. You can also upgrade your party to utilize all the outside fun, add soda, cake, even party favors for additional fees.   • Palouse Discovery Science Center: Did you know we have a children’s science museum in our area? The PDSC is located in Pullman and not only can you visit for an afternoon, you can also schedule to have a birthday party here. $150 includes admission for 12 guests and one parent each, 90 minutes in a party room, a 30-minute science activity (you can choose from a number of themes), $10 credit toward the gift shop, and plates, utensils, napkins and tablecloths. Not to mention an incredible experience for each guest. Bring your own food, beverage and cake, and you’re set. Call (509) 332-6869 for booking.
  • Do something outside and create your own fun. Scavenger hunts in Lewiston’s Pioneer Park, the University of Idaho Arboretum in Moscow or (insert your favorite city park here) would be fun. Go to Hell’s Gate State Park in Lewiston and, after playing at the playground, visit the museums on site. Make food yourself, order pizza or have your party catered by a local restaurant or catering company.

4 party entrepreneurs bought 'Beer Can Island' in Florida's Tampa Bay for $63,000. They're now selling it for $14 million.

A party venue with a difference in Florida's Tampa Bay is up for sale for $14.2 million.

Pine Key is an island in the middle of Tampa Bay, created by a state dredging project . It stretches some 69 acres, though only nine of these are above water, and boasts photogenic white beaches and surrounding blue waters.

It is commonly known as 'Beer Can Island' for the beer cans left behind by boaters but it has been transformed into one of Florida's party hot spots in the last seven years.

It was purchased by four entrepreneurial friends in 2017 for $63,650.

Russell Loomis, 46, who was one of the visionary quartet, said in an interview with The Times of London: "We've worked our tails off for the last six years on this project, and we're just ready to pass the torch to the next person."

According to his LinkedIn profile, Loomis has a business background in tech apps and running a debt relief company . In 2017, he built a floating tiki bar with friends from 258 plastic barrels. Finding a parking spot for their floating watering hole drew them to Pine Key.

"It's been an extremely fun time, but it's come with a lot of challenges. We didn't know when we bought it what we were getting into."

When they purchased the island, which already had a reputation as an unofficial party spot for locals, it lacked facilities or utilities, and its owners seemed quite glad to be rid of it.

But in the years since, after hauling in food and alcohol supplies, fixing up toilets, picnic tables, and a 120ft inflatable slide, the once defunct island has become a hub for boaters seeking to let their hair down.

"Running an island is different to running a regular business. There's a whole new learning curve," Loomis said.

"If you run a bar on the mainland, a truck shows up with all the inventory, and they come in and stock the shelves; with the island, you physically go shopping, load it into vans, off the vans into a boat, off the boat onto wherever it's going on the island.

"The logistics are the most difficult," Loomis said.

Nonetheless, Loomis, Cole Weaver, James Wester, and John Gadd, having invested $5 million in the project , have turned the island into a hot spot for party-goers. They've even hosted weddings and music events, selling up to 3,000 concert tickets a time.

Others weren't so keen on the friends' business plan

While many enjoyed the friends' decision to pimp out the island, some were less sure.

"A core group of people thought it was their island and didn't understand that before we bought it, it was actually privately owned, and they were trespassers — the owner just didn't enforce it, so they felt entitled. We opened it up and created facilities and entertainment," Loomis said.

In an attempt to placate some locals, Weaver spent 100 days living on the island, building relationships with the boating community and reassuring them that they could still come to the island when they wished.

Weaver, an estate agent and architectural engineer, decided to keep most of the island open to anyone who wished to step ashore but sectioned off some of it for fee-paying "members only."

Local authorities also kicked up a fuss, saying that the island ought to be used as a nature reserve rather than for parties. Manatees reside near to the island, seeking comfort in the warm waters during the winter. Weaver, though, believes the only wildlife that lives on the island are seagulls and a rat that pestered him during his stay, per The Times.

The island will be auctioned off as an NFT for cryptocurrency, though cash offers will also be accepted, Fox reports. The auction began in early March and will end on April 1, 2024.

The highest bidder will be the new island owner. However, the unique property does come with specific problems. Last year, it was submerged under five feet of water during Hurricane Idalia, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

"We've had so much interest and many, many phone calls, from developers who want to build homes to people who want to continue doing what we're doing," Weaver told The Times.

"It was a fun time … it was a good time. It's not every day you wake up to your own island," he said.

At least 40 killed and dozens injured in Moscow concert hall shooting; ISIS claims responsibility

Several gunmen burst into a large concert hall on the edge of Moscow on Friday and sprayed the crowd with automatic gunfire, killing at least 40 people, injuring more than 100 others and setting fire to the venue in a brazen attack just days after President Vladimir Putin  cemented his grip on power in a highly orchestrated electoral landslide.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the attack as a "huge tragedy" and which state authorities are investigating as terrorism. The attack, which left the concert hall in flames with a collapsed roof, was the deadliest attack in Russia in years and came as the country's  war in Ukraine dragged into a third year.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on affiliated channels on social media. In a statement posted by its Aamaq news agency, the group said it attacked a large gathering of Christians in the city of Krasnogorsk on the outskirts of the Russian capital of Moscow, killing and wounding hundreds. It was not immediately possible to verify the authenticity of the claim.

A U.S. official tells CBS News the U.S. has intelligence confirming the Islamic State's claims of responsibility, and that they have no reason to doubt those claims. The U.S. official also confirmed that the U.S. provided intelligence to Russia about a potential attack under the intelligence community's Duty to Warn requirement.

National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson confirmed that in a statement provided to CBS News Friday evening.

"Earlier this month, the U.S. government had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow —potentially targeting large gatherings, to include concerts— which prompted the State Department to issue a public advisory to Americans in Russia," Watson said. "The U.S. government also shared this information with Russian authorities in accordance with its longstanding 'duty to warn' policy."

A U.S. law enforcement official tells CBS News that there is no known threat to the U.S. emanating from the Moscow attack.

Russia's Federal Security Service, the main domestic security and counter-terrorism agency, said 40 people were killed and more than 100 were wounded in the attack at Crocus City Hall, a large music hall on Moscow's western edge.

The assailants threw explosives, triggering the massive blaze at the hall, which can accommodate 6,000, according to Russian news outlets. Video from outside showed the building on fire, with a huge cloud of smoke rising through the night sky. The street was lit up by the blinking blue lights of dozens of firetrucks, ambulances and other emergency vehicles.

The attack took place as crowds gathered for a performance by the famous Russian rock band Picnic. Russian news reports said concertgoers were being evacuated, but that an unknown number could have been trapped by the blaze.

The prosecutor's office said several men in combat fatigues entered the concert hall and fired on concertgoers.

Repeated volleys of gunfire could be heard in videos posted by Russian media and on Telegram channels. One showed two men with rifles moving through the venue. Another showed a man inside the auditorium and saying the assailants had set it on fire, as gunshots rang out incessantly in the background.

Other videos showed up to four attackers, armed with assault rifles and wearing caps, who were shooting at screaming people at point-blank range.

Guards at the concert hall didn't have guns, and some could have been killed at the start of the attack, Russian media reported. It wasn't immediately clear what happened to the assailants, but some Russian news outlets suggested that they fled before special forces and riot police arrived.

Russian authorities said security has been tightened at Moscow's airports, railway stations and the capital's sprawling subway system. Moscow's mayor canceled all mass gatherings, and theaters and museums shut for the weekend. Other Russian regions also tightened security.

Gunmen attack concert hall in Moscow

The Kremlin hasn't blamed anyone for the attack, but some Russian lawmakers were quick to accuse Ukraine of being behind it. Hours before the attack, the Russian military launched a sweeping barrage on Ukraine's power system, crippling the country's biggest hydroelectric plant and other energy facilities and leaving more than a million people without electricity.

John Kirby, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said Friday that he couldn't yet speak about all the details but that "the images are just horrible. And just hard to watch."

"Our thoughts are going to be with the victims of this terrible, terrible shooting attack," Kirby said. "There are some moms and dads and brothers and sisters and sons and daughters who haven't gotten the news yet. This is going to be a tough day."

The attack followed a statement issued earlier this month by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow that urged Americans to avoid crowded places in the Russian capital in view of "imminent" plans by extremists to target large gatherings in Moscow, a warning that was repeated by several other Western embassies.

Asked about the embassy's notice issued on March 7, Kirby referred the question to the State Department, adding: "I don't think that was related to this specific attack."

Responding to a question about whether Washington had any prior information about the assault, Kirby responded: "I'm not aware of any advance knowledge that we had of this terrible attack."

Russia was shaken by a series of deadly terror attacks in the early 2000s during the fighting with separatists in the Russian province of Chechnya.

In October 2002, Chechen militants took about 800 people hostage at a Moscow theater. Two days later, Russian special forces stormed the building, and 129 hostages and 41 Chechen fighters died, most of them from the effects of narcotic gas Russian forces used to subdue the attackers.

And in September 2004, about 30 Chechen militants seized a school in Beslan in southern Russia, taking hundreds of hostages. The siege ended in a bloodbath two days later and more than 330 people, about half of them children, were killed.

Premier Steven Miles could delay contracts for Olympics upgrade at athletics centre until after state election

Queensland Premier Steven Miles holds a media conference.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles could wait until after the state election to lock in contracts for a key 2032 Olympic Games stadium upgrade, but he wants construction to begin on smaller venues within months.

Mr Miles has also revealed he spoke with International Olympic Committee (IOC) vice president John Coates in the days before announcing his new plans for Games venues.

The government last week axed its plans to rebuild the Gabba , with Suncorp Stadium now set to host the Games' opening ceremony and the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC) to be used for athletics.

Speaking on ABC Radio Brisbane on Monday morning, Mr Miles suggested he was open to delaying his plans to revamp QSAC until after the October election.

"I've offered to engage with the leader of the opposition [David Crisafulli] to make sure that he's fully briefed and understands our plans," he said.

"If he asked us to delay the tender on that one, we'd consider that request depending on what that meant for the finishing time frame.

"The message I've heard is that it's time to get on and do these things now that we know what we are going to do."

Mr Miles indicated his government would lock in projects he believes are not contentious before the October poll.

This would include smaller community sporting venues and regional stadium upgrades.

"They will start going to tender from April," Mr Miles said.

"We want to get on with those and we want to see those delivered.

"In fact, I'd like to see construction underway on some of them prior to the election."

Timeline for alternative plans

Earlier this year, the government commissioned an independent 60-day review led by former Brisbane lord mayor Graham Quirk to probe infrastructure plans for the Games.

The review suggested the Gabba be demolished and the site be repurposed, and that a new stadium be built at Victoria Park at a cost of $3.4 billion.

It also warned against using QSAC to host track and field events, finding that an upgrade to the venue did not represent value for money.

Mr Miles ultimately rejected these proposals.

He wants to instead use QSAC for the athletics, which he says was proposed by Mr Coates.

The premier indicated he had spoken on the phone with Mr Coates before Mr Quirk's review was released, but after the government had received a draft copy.

"What happened was Graham Quirk indicated to us what his likely recommendation would be, and I knew that that was likely to be unacceptable," Mr Miles said on Monday.

"We started working then on what an alternative would be.

"The fact is anything we decided would have to be negotiated with the IOC … so adopting the proposal that came from John Coates effectively jumped us ahead on that process of negotiation."

Mr Miles insisted the government had still made its final decisions on the venues after it received Mr Quirk's review.

LNP promises 100-day venue review

Opposition leader David Crisafulli last week said he did not support a new stadium for the Games.

He has vowed to set up an independent coordination authority that would be tasked with conducting a 100-day review of the Games' venues.

"Queenslanders were told 1,000 days ago that there wouldn't be new stadiums. That was never part of the deal," Mr Crisafulli said on Friday.

Queenslanders will head to the polls on October 26.
