ENGLISH GALLEON GOLDEN HIND

Sir Francis Drakes ship of exploration was a small English galleon called the Golden Hind. Drake circumnavigated the world in this ship between 1577 and 1580 ( wikipedia entry ).  This sailing ship is a popular subject of wooden ship modelers, and Ages of Sail carries several different kits.

OcCre's  wooden model ship kit is probably the most popular at the time. This plank-on-bulkhead kit is easy enough for new builders, but includes beautiful quality wood, and carries an affordable price.

Constructo makes a much bigger ship model kit, which features more cast metal fittings, which have a better, more realistic appearance, but it probably for more advanced ship modelers.

We also carry Golden Hind kits from Mamoli , Mini-Mamoli , and offer a Deluxe Combo Set that includes tools, glues, and more, based on the OcCre model kit.

ARMED TRANSPORT HMS BOUNTY

HMS Bounty was an armed merchant ship in service with the British Royal Navy, and it was on a mission to collect breadfruit plants in the South Pacific, but the ship is most well known for the infamous mutiny against Captain Bligh by a crew led by Fletcher Christian ( wikipedia entry ). This 3-masted square-riggers is another popular subject among ship model builders.

Amati's kit may be the most beautiful of the available wooden model kits of Bounty. It is one recommended for advanced ship modelers, though a careful intermediate modeler might build a successful model

Amati's First Step kit is a small, solid hull, wooden model ship kit designed for the first time ship modeler, young or old.

Artesania Latina's kit  as well as OcCre's kit actually have one side of the ship open, showing the framing and life aboard. This is a more expensive kit, and far more challenging, but it's fun and interesting to look at when it's done.

HMS VICTORY - NELSON'S FLAGSHIP

What ship modeler doesn't dream of building a model of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar? ( wikipedia entry ) The Victory was a 100-gun first-rate ship of the line that is one of the most complicated ship model builds available. Kits of the Victory are available from many manufacturers, and some of them are simplified versions of the ship, so you to choose the complexity of your build. Any version will still be a serious challenge.

Caldercraft makes what is currently the largest and most detail wooden kit of HMS Victory on the market. This 1/72-scale plank-on-bulkhead wooden model ship kit is highly prized among model ship builders.

Mantua makes a few different HMS Victory kits including this smaller 1/200-scale kit that's small in size, but big on detail. This kit will provide to be a challenge that won't take up a lot of shelf space.

Corel's HMS Victory kit is a classic wooden model ship kit that has been one of the more popular kits of Nelson's famed ship of the line.

Many other kits are available including those from Billing Boats, Constructo, Mantua/Panart , Mantua , Mamoli , and even a paper model version from Shipyard .

PIRATE SHIPS and BUCCANEERS

Pirates are all the rage in popular culture these days, though the real ones were murderous cutthroats and seagoing robbers. Still, who wouldn't love to build a wooden ship model of a pirate ship under sail, flying the Jolly Roger? At Ages of Sail, we have more pirate ship model kits than you can shake a hook at. OcCre's Buccaneer kit is a designed for beginning ship modelers, but offers the look of the classic pirate ship. The kit features a double-planked hull using a beautiful looking finish wood, and even includes a set of pre-sewn sails and, of course, a Jolly Roger flag.

Amati's First Step series Pirate Ship is ideal for the first time model builder, young or old. This easy to build series of wooden model ship kits feature a simple solid-hull designed for ease of construction.

OcCre's HMS Endeavour kit is one of the largest and most complete at 1/54-scale. This plank-on-bulkhead wooden model ship kit includes a good set of instructions that should make this challenging subject a bit easier. 

Caldercraft's wooden model ship kit is among the smallest of the available Endeavour kits, but it's scale accuracy is excellent, making it a popular kit.

Constructo's HMS Endeavour kit is designed to build into a classic and beautiful wooden ship model that is bound to make you proud when complete.

Other kits of the famous ship include ones from Billing Boats , Corel , Mantua , and paper model version from Shipyard .

POLAR EXPLORERS

Many expeditions have search the frigid waters of both the Arctic and the Arctic. The search for new territories and new trade routes have caused many to risk life and limb in their quests, and here are a few available to wooden model ship kit builders.

Astrolabe was a French warship which discovered many new territories for France in the 1800s, and Mantua makes a beautiful kit of this famous ship.

HMS Terror was one of two ships of the ill-fated Franklin Expedition sent into Arctic waters in search of the allusive Northwest Passage. OcCre's kit is a faithful reproduction of this bomb vessel turned explorer.

Gjoa was the first ship to find and successfully navigate the Northwest Passage. Roal Amundsen's ship is well represented by this beatiful wood ship model kit from Constructo of Spain.

Endurance was the Antarctic exploration ship of Sir Ernest Shacklton. OcCre's kit of this famed expedition ship is well detailed and has become quite a popular kit following the recent discovery of the sunken ship which was found amazingly intact.

Why Premier Ship Models?

We are a global ecommerce business founded 20 years ago serving both the corporate and private sectors with our growing range of different services. Our current offering includes ready-made model ships, model boat kits, display cases, model restoration, 3D printing, rendering and architectural models. With an international reach that spans over 80 countries and a website with four currencies, our presence in the market has continued to grow and we have 1000’s of satisfied customers across the world.

We have pursued our interest in building ready-made ship models and offer three levels of quality, with multiple workshops located over the globe that can meet a variety of requirements and budgets. The likes of our best quality can be seen in prestigious places including a variety of different museums and the offices of high profile shipping, yachting and cruise companies. Working with a portfolio of corporate customers from different industries has expanded our collection to include model tankers, container ships, technical vessels and modern yachts.

We provide a highly bespoke service and have a strong philosophy based on meeting customer’s needs. We promise that if you can supply plans or photos of your boat or boats, then we can build it. We have carried this philosophy over 19 years of model making and have completed 200 custom built projects. Our latest venture has been in to the World of 3D printing and we are looking forward to using this technology in our ever evolving business.

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

• The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
• The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company. 
• Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

Francis Scott Key Bridge collapses after a container ship smashes into the four-lane span, plunging cars into the river.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, has collapsed after a cargo ship hit one of its support columns.

Officials say at least six people from a construction crew remain missing and are presumed dead .

Here is what we know so far:

What happened in Baltimore and when?

• About 1:27am (05:27 GMT) on Tuesday, a container ship collided with one of the pillars supporting the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the city on the East Coast of the United States.
• Cars using the bridge fell into the Patapsco River, while six workers were missing and presumed dead.
• The ship, named the Dali, is 300 metres (984 feet) long. The Singapore-registered vessel left Baltimore at 1am (05:00GMT) and was heading for Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was supposed to arrive at its destination on April 22.
• Local pilots, not the crew, were guiding the ship at the time of the accident, according to Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld. These pilots are trained to avoid accidents like the one on Tuesday.
• Authorities said all 22 crew members on the Dali and the two pilots have been accounted for and there were no reports of injuries.

Why did the ship lose control?

• According to a report by ABC News, the ship “lost propulsion” as it was leaving port, and its crew notified Maryland officials they had lost control of the vessel.
• Clay Diamond, the executive director and general counsel of the American Pilots’ Association, said the ship underwent a “complete blackout” at approximately 1:20am (05:20 GMT).
• “Just minutes before the bridge, there was a total blackout on the ship, meaning that the ship lost engine power and electrical power, it was a complete blackout,” Diamond told CNN.
• The vessel was moving at a standard speed of 8 knots (14.8 km/h), typical for the area. Despite the ship not recovering its main power source, Diamond mentioned that a diesel backup generator activated, thereby reinstating the electrical systems.
• The pilot immediately ordered the rudder hard to port to keep the ship from turning right and ordered the port anchor be dropped, Diamond said. The pilot also contacted a dispatch office to get the bridge shut down.
• Diamond said widely circulated images show the ship’s lights turning off and then back on, leading to questions about whether the vessel had regained power. But, he said, the emergency generators that kicked in turned the lights back on but not the ship’s propulsion.
• One of the pilots did “everything that he could have done”, Diamond said according to a report by the New York Post.

Where did it happen?

• The 2.6km (1.6-mile), four-lane bridge — named after the man who wrote the words of The Star-Spangled Banner, the US national anthem — spans the Patapsco River just southeast of central Baltimore.
• It is a key part of the road network around Baltimore, an industrial city northeast of the US capital, Washington, DC. The bridge carried more than 12 million commercial and passenger vehicles in 2023.
• Baltimore’s port handles farm and construction machinery, sugar, gypsum and coal as well as imports and exports for major automakers, including Nissan, Toyota, General Motors, Volvo, Jaguar and Land Rover.

What do we know about the people on the bridge?

• According to authorities, eight people were on the bridge at the time of the collision, and six remain unaccounted for. They were part of a construction crew filling potholes on the bridge.
• From those six, two of them were from Guatemala, according to the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Some of the people missing were also from Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador.
• Among the missing individuals were a 26-year-old and another aged 35, who were both workers. The Guatemalan ministry said they were members of a team assigned to “repairing the asphalt on the bridge at the time of the accident.”
• In the operation, at least two people were rescued – one was taken to hospital and was later discharged, officials said.
• A fellow construction company employee says he was told his missing co-workers were on a break and some were sitting in their trucks when the bridge collapsed.
• Maryland Governor Wes Moore said he’s spent time with the families of victims. “The strength of these families is absolutely remarkable,” he added.

What happens next?

• President Joe Biden, speaking from the White House, promised the nation a large federal response to the collapse, emphasising that there was no evidence suggesting it was a deliberate act.
• In the port, the traffic was suspended until further notice, according to Maryland transport authorities.
• The collapse is almost sure to create a logistical nightmare for months, if not years, along the East Coast, shutting down ship traffic at the Port of Baltimore and snarling cargo and commuter traffic.
• “Losing this bridge will devastate the entire area, as well as the entire East Coast,” state Senator Johnny Ray Salling said.
• The Port of Baltimore is also the ninth-busiest major US port in terms of both foreign cargo handled and foreign cargo value, and is directly responsible for more than 15,000 jobs while supporting almost 140,000 more.
• In the evening of Tuesday, Colonel Roland Butler, superintendent for Maryland State Police, announced that the search and rescue mission was transitioning to one of search and recovery.
• Starting at 6am (10:00 GMT) on Wednesday, “we’re hoping to put divers in the water and begin a more detailed search to do our very best to recover those six missing people”, Butler added.
