Model yacht racing is a popular hobby that involves miniature sailboats racing against each other. This hobby originated in the 19th century and has since grown in popularity around the world. Model yacht racing is not only fun but also requires skill and strategy, making it a challenging and satisfying activity for participants. Model yachts come in different sizes and designs, ranging from small remote-controlled boats to larger traditional sailing yachts. Some popular types of model yachts include radio-controlled boats, pond yachts, and racing skiffs. Each type of model yacht has its own unique features and requires different skills and techniques to navigate. Model yacht racing has established rules and regulations that vary depending on the type of race. The International Radio Sailing Association (IRSA) governs radio-controlled model yacht racing, while traditional pond yacht racing often has its own set of rules. Most races follow a set course and have different point systems for determining the winner.

Sarasota Model Yacht Club

Welcome - About Us

model yacht racing near me

The Sarasota Model Yacht Club got its start in Sarasota in 1996.  Our club sails the American Model Yachting Association-sanctioned one-design Soling One Meter R/C , RC Laser, DF65, DF95 and (during the winter only) IOM model yachts. The club meets six (seven times a week when the IOM sail) times per week for practice and racing. We sail at the  Nathan Benderson Park at  the West Lake on Athletes Drive.   The West Lake is off of Honore at Athletes Drive.

The Soling 1-Meter kit-based model is a pleasure to sail. As a one-design, it is an ideal introduction to model yachting, yet it provides a  competitive boat for the best of veterans as well and is available from  “ Boatyard John ” (our club builder).

The RCLaser is factory-built ready to sail and available at  intensitysails.com

We also sail the Dragon Force (DF) DF65 and the DF95 RC boats.

The DF 65 is one of the fastest growing class of RC sailboats in the U.S. The boat has earned this distinction by being a great one-design sailing boat while being the least expensive ready-to-sail boat on the market. At around $350 for a boat with radio and receiver and about 3 hours of assembly and you're on the water.

The DF95 is the fastest growing class in the USA and is near Ready-to-Sail in a kit form from  Radiosailing.net  or from “Boatyard John”.

All skill levels are welcome, from neophytes to crusty old salts! You will find that our members can be very helpful in getting you involved with this great hobby. Come on out to watch the hard-fought races or join us for practice and racing.

The Soling One Meter (S1M) :  This S1M the largest class in the U.S. and Florida. We sail Solings Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Race Captains rotate throughout the year. Craig Collemer is the Race Captain.

The RC Laser :  This is the largest RC class in the world. We sail Lasers on Friday. Steve Lippincott is the Race Captain.

The DF65 and the DF95 :  These are the newest and fastest-growing restricted one-design class in both Florida and the U.S.

We sail DF95's on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Bill Hendrickson is the Race Captain. The DF65 fleet sails Monday and Wednesday.  Rob Wucki is the Race Captain.

IOM The IOM Class is considered a Development Class by the AMYA.

The International One Metre class is the fastest-growing class in the world. This class is distinct and different in purpose from the US One Meter class, and complements the International Marblehead Class as a simpler, less expensive boat. The International class has a one-design rig, and has minimum weights on the keel and overall, and restricts the hull material. The net effect of these differences is that the typical cost spiral of lighter weight, and more expensive materials and manufacturing processes, is arrested. This allows amateur designers and builders a chance to design and build with little concern that they are building in a disadvantage due to weight. This is a feature not found in any existing AMYA class and is one of the reasons that the class is so popular around the world.  We sail IOM's on Sundays in season.  John Stryhn " Boatyard" is the Race Captain.

Radio Control Model Yacht Club

Mid Atlantic Model Yacht Club

The Mid Atlantic Model Yacht Club is a group of sailing enthusiasts who get together once a month to race radio-controlled model sailboats.  Our club is a member of the American Model Yachting Association, AMYA  , which is the National governing body of model yachting.  Our members come from the surrounding areas in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware.

We have skilled model builders in the club who will help new members get started and resolve construction problems along the way.  We also have accomplished racers who are willing to share their knowledge to help a colleague improve his boats performance.  The competitive spirit is always present at our races but the real emphasis in our club is to have fun and to promote the hobby of model boat sailing in the Mid-Atlantic region.  We welcome new members.

What We Sail

We race the East Coast 12 Meter (EC12) boat at the Mid Atlantic Model Yacht Club.  The EC12 is a one-design boat where all dimensions are strictly controlled.  The hull is 58 inches long with a sail area of 1200 square inches.  The AMYA  website and the EC12  website have lots of information about this model yacht.

VM 11/4/2023

Final regatta of the season, VM, was attempted. With a forecast of 6-10 knot winds, 6 boats began only to find more like 3 knots which tapered off as the day progressed. After 3 races, a lunch break was called hoping for bettering conditions. After a reasonable time, a poll was conducted. The result was suspension (cancellation) of the regatta, making these results unofficial. We were however afforded amusement in the form of watching Rick Gates retrieving some of the marks in the new dinghy.

Old Man Of The Mountain Footy Regatta 9/23/2023

Cliff wins Footy Regatta coming from behind Herb to take the lead in the last race. We only completed 9 races because of light showers beginning 2 hours before the weathermen predicted. [ Perhaps they should be called whether( or not) men?] Wind was actually better than predicted with normal Sandy Pond dead spots and swirls keeping everything interesting. We were a little disappointed with the turnout but an iffy forecast might have been the cause.

EC12 9-9-2023

Cliff wins our EC12 regatta under very nice skies with somewhat spotty, fairly light wind conditions. Interestingly, several places were determined within a foot of the finish line, leading to good racing. Luckily, there were almost no weed calls ( except Chris who picked some up while launching through the weeds- go figure). Speaking of Chris…. he also took a dip in the pond while resetting the start mark after one off the young locals decided to pull it in for who knows what nefarious reason. Afterwards Chris said that wearing Crocs near a slippery shoreline might have been a less than great idea.

3rd annual V36 regatta

Cliff Martin wins our 3rd annual V36 regatta with his Rip Tide under sunny skies with challenging winds which varied from almost knock down force to very light conditions. Both Ricks were forced to change boats during the regatta (Note the 6’s).

V36 8-12-2023

With very light and at times non-existent breeze, the racing started.  After a dead boat retrieval just before the first race, racing commenced 20 minutes late.  The breeze just got worse with the first 2 races taking 30 minutes each, including 2 boats stuck together, then the next 4 pushed us until 2:20.  After the break, the wind got worse and we called it after 8 races. 3 rescues with the club kayak “Breaking Wind” were accomplished.  Although the racing was slow and frustrating, to everyone’s surprise there were almost no fouls all day.

EC12 8-5-2023

model yacht racing near me

It was a very hot and humid day with very unstable winds with shift from east to southwest then back again for most of the day. With a great tacking leg to start the races the first mark (and furthest out mark) seemed to separate the boats with the #10 and 549 boats missing the first mark almost every time it gave the 90 and 82 a chance to slip away and battle for the win with the 82 coming out on top of the tie with 1 extra win. Jim L started the regatta skippering the #58 boat but half way gave the controls to Cliff M for a stunning 3rd place for the 58 boat. leaving the 10 (Rick L) and 549 (Rick G) to fight for 4th with Rick L (#10) took when Rick G’s rudder gave out and he retired early.

Cliff wins V36 race 3 held at Rosemary Pond due to poor surface conditions (weeds, algae and general pond scum) at Sandy Pond thanks to the Minuteman Model Yacht Club and Sue Martin.

Herb wins EC12 regatta. We were greeted with good, nearly constant, winds from the East. Unfortunately it was accompanied by heavy mist through most or the races. Cliff had winch problems, which kept him on the beach. Dave skippered his newly acquired EC12 for his first regatta.
