The capsize screening value for Medalist 33 Mk II is 1.76, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Medalist 33 Mk II is about 149 kg/cm, alternatively 839 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 149 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 839 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

LeComte Medalist 33???

  • Add to quote

I''m in the midst of purchasing a LeComte 1964 Medalist 33. I''ve searched the internet and found very little info on this boat. If anyone out there has any knowledge or experience sailing this craft, I''d really appreciate your help.

Sailed one of these a long while back. It was pretty nicely balanced. It didn''t do funny things going to leeward with the chute up, and moved along fairly well upwind too. Space below was adequate - almost roomy for the period of her design. They look distictive, with the essentially flush deck/doghouse, but purposeful. I cruised with a family from Long Island Sound to Nantucket and back, and we had a great time. Practical Sailor should have something on the design in their Used Boat Buyer''s Guide.

Try lecomteyachts.com The people there have information on the boat. I had been looking at one some time ago and they were very helpful. They have some printed material which they copied and sent to me, however I did not keep it. Bob

I''m sorry, the correct address is [email protected]

Regarding buying a Medalist 33, I will selling my Medalist 33 soon. She has been on Lake Michigan for all her years (40), two months in water each. Updated with roller reefing of jib, Harken self tailing winches, much easier main sheet block and tackle system and more. I am interested in what shape your recent Medalist is in and price range? Bob

Hi Bob, Thanks so much for responding to my message. We ended up buying a 1964 Medalist 33 and the interior is in excellent condition. The exterior needs some work, especially the hatches and wood trim. The asking price was $16,500, but the engine had water in it and wouldn''t run. We paid 12,500 and spent some time refurbishing the engine and luckily it is now in working order. There have been alot of people interested in our boat and if you''d like, we would be happy to tell them your asking price. We had the original plaque stolen from her and we are wondering where we might get a rubbing so that it is possible to make another one. Also, do you know where we could purchase parts for the original galley sink and head sink water faucets? Thanks so much, Jennifer Ryman

Bump. Looking at a late Medalist Mark 2, with the flush deck ("gun turret") and split underbody. The Lecomte owners site seems to have gone dead - anyone here have some personal experience with these boasts? Tom

medalist 33 sailboat

This is a close cousin to my favorite CCA era boat of this size, the Tripp designed Galaxy 32. A Medalist 2 with the gun turret house and fin keel/spade rudder would be a very rare boat. I had thought that all of the fin keel/spade rudder had the swoop trunk house. These were extremely well built boats and came from the factory with a magnificent fit and finish. I have not sailed the fin keel/spade rudder version, but the fin keel with attached rudder version was pretty slow in light air, but sailed well in a breeze. Tripp experimented with firmer bilges and more powerful stern sections than was popular in this era. It gave these boats a bit more stability and better dampening for a nicer roll motion (smaller angles and gentler end of roll motion) than was typical during that era. Jeff

In the Mark 2 you could specify the turret or the full doghouse on the split underbody. I think the turret looks absolutely killer and I love the functionality of the flush deck, but you probably give up a little light and ventilation in the bargain. Pretty boat..

Owned a Mark I for two years. So beautiful. Interestingly constructed with a thin (for those days) skin with stringers. There were some problems with construction the worst being the built into the skin mild steel chainplates (in my case they were swelling and staining as there was nothing to stop water from egressing straight into the haphazardly glassed pocket that held them.. I beat that problem but, as you can imagine, not fun.). The glue was giving out on the pretty joiner work and so it seemed to be falling apart as I restored. Deep keel void thast was intended to double as a watertank made it VERY difficult to access keelbolts that were buried under glass at the bottom. Existing brochures offered that the keelbolts were either stainless or everdure and I could find no record of the years in which either was used. Reef early, reef often was my experience as it easily developed a strong weather helm. Beautiful boat but I moved on quickly. Caveat Emptor big time. If well looked after worthwhile but...

Hi Jennifer, My name is Martin. I have Lecomte Medalist hull #62 from 1964. Which hull number is yours? I have a spade rudder and flush deck with bubble cabin top. I am trying to determine which model I have-maybe its one of the rebuilds as the aft end of the keel looks to have held a rudder post at one time. Happy sailing, Martin

33' Feet 1964 Lecomte Medalist

$10,000 (usd), boat id: 40430, contact us directly - 800-675-4089, learn how the process works (faq).

Rumor has it this boat was sailed to America from Holland when originally purchased. The boat is on the yard right now and is in need of significant work below the water line. There is evidence of a substantial amount of osmosis, resulting in blistering of the gel coat and a small amount of delamination in the fiberglass. The engine runs well but the heat exchanged unit will need to be replaced shortly as the current unit is patched with epoxy. She is a beautiful boat in need of an enthusiastic owner. I have had her for 7 years and have completed many projects on here such as topside paint, wood stove installation, tiller refit and canvas work. She had a substantial refit in 2006 which provided new standing rigging, , running rigging, diesel engine , galley countertop, alcohol stove and new elctrical wiring and lifelines.

LeComte Yachts

Founded by Adolf “Dolf” LeComte, originally an exporter of Dutch built yachts for an expanding American Market. He soon opened his own yard in the town of Jutphaas, south of Utrecht. Contracts with the yacht design firm of John Alden Co. followed, resulting in the wood construction of 33’ Malabar Senior sloops and 42’ Nordfarer yawls, as well as finishing the Halmatic-molded 38’ Challenger yawls. In 1961, LeComte-Holland moved into fiberglass construction exclusively, starting with the Medalist 33 sloop, followed in 1962 with the North East 38 sloop/yawl. Quality construction was the norm, with solid-glass hulls, Airex-cored decks, yacht quality varnished interiors and attractive designs joined in a competitive hull and rig design. 1965 brought the flush-deck, teak-decked 52’ Ocean Racer, the last of the Tripp designs with LeComte. In addition to constantly upgrading the yachts, in 1966 a complete redesign of hulls, rigs and interiors kept these designs current and popular. In 1968, soon after opening a modern building facility in Vianen on the Lek River, (just south of Jutphaas) the Luders-designed Fastnet 45 sloop/yawl joined the LeComte family. 1970 brought the phasing out of the Medalist 33 in favor of the LeComte-designed ALC-35 sloop, and 1971 replaced the North East 38 with the ALC-40 sloop. 1973 brought the redesign of the Fastnet 45 as the ALC-46 sloop/ketch. While all this was going on, LeComte-Holland was conducting an active program of military/commercial building of fiberglass powerboats, such as 20-meter pilot boats for the Hook of Holland, landing craft for the Dutch Marines and fishing trawlers. These contracts gave the company experience in foam-cored hulls, which served as a basis for the later move into rigid hull inflatable (RHIB) boats and tunnel-hulled landing craft and utility boats. In 1963, Dolf LeComte purchased a piece of waterfront property on New Rochelle’s Lower Harbor, bulkhead, dredged and back filled, and built a 32-slip marina. In addition to moving the sales office there, Dolf developed a small staff of skilled workers to commission and service the new yachts arriving from Holland. Incorporated as Glen Island Yacht Club, the slip holders benefited by having these craftsmen on site to service their yachts, too. Retiring in 1994, Dolf LeComte closed LeComte-Holland and sold the Vianen property to a non-marine industrial user. Army will present Purple Heart to veteran 73 years after he was wounded in Korean War

FILE - Earl Meyer, who fought for the U.S. Army in the Korean War, talks with fellow veterans...

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — After 73 years and a long fight with the U.S. Army, a Korean War veteran from Minnesota who was wounded in combat was set to  finally get his Purple Heart medal  on Friday.

The Army notified Earl Meyer, 96, of St. Peter, last month that it had granted him a Purple Heart, which honors service members wounded or killed in combat. Meyer, who still has shrapnel in his thigh that continues to cause him occasional pain, was scheduled to receive it in a ceremony at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

An Army review board had rejected Meyer’s application several times due to a lack of paperwork, but it  reversed course after a campaign  by his three daughters and an attorney. U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota also intervened on his behalf along with the service’s top noncommissioned officer, the sergeant major of the Army. A federal judge ordered the review board to take another look.

Meyer’s case showcases the challenges for wounded veterans to get medals they’ve earned when the fog of war, the absence of records and the passage of time make it challenging to produce proof.

“Seventy-three years, yeah. That’s a long time all right. ... I didn’t think they would go for it,” Meyer said in an interview after he got the news last month.

Klobuchar will be one of the dignitaries at the ceremony, while one of her former aides who worked on the case will sing the national anthem, said Meyer’s daughter, Sandy Baker, of New Buffalo, Michigan.

Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael Weimer said he wouldn’t be able to attend, but he sent a latter of gratitude for Meyer’s “selfless service and dedication.” And in a handwritten addition at the bottom of the letter Weimer said: “Thank you for not giving up on us! Long overdue!”

Weimer will send two command sergeant majors from the Army National Guard in his place, Baker said.

Few men in Meyer’s unit who witnessed the mortar attack in 1951 survived. Only a few members of his platoon made it out unharmed. He didn’t even realize at first that he had been wounded. He said he thinks the medic who treated him on the battlefield was killed before he could file the paperwork. And he wasn’t thinking then about a medal anyway — he just wanted to survive.

When the Army denied Meyer’s first applications for the medal, it said his documentation was insufficient. Klobuchar’s office helped him obtain additional documents and an Army review board finally concluded last month that the new evidence “establishes beyond reasonable doubt that the applicant was wounded in action in early June 1951.”

The board cited records from the Department of Veterans Affairs, where doctors concluded the shrapnel in his thigh had to be from a combat injury. The board also cited a recent memo from Weimer, who said he believed Meyer’s account was accurate, and that his medal request deserved another review.

Olympics | uconn moves historic spirit rock: ‘a blatant attempt to suppress’ speech, subscriber only, olympics | this ct athlete is looking for the full olympic experience – and a medal – this time around.

Liam Corrigan, a rower from Old Lyme, is returning to his second Olympic Games, this time in the U.S. men's four, after finishing fourth in the men's eight boat at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 (photo by row2K)

Corrigan, a rower from Old Lyme, finished fourth with the U.S. men’s eight boat.

That was his first Olympic experience. He is expecting something quite different when he heads back to the Paris Olympic Games in July, this time as a member of the U.S. four boat.

“The biggest thing I’m excited for is to certainly win a medal but the other part is just the whole COVID thing (last time),” Corrigan said by phone from Princeton, N.J., where the team is training. “The Games were well orchestrated but kind of the Olympic part of it, the pageantry and all that, was pretty much gone. We were isolated in our rooms; we didn’t go to any of the other events. We had to leave right after our event finished. That was a little tough.”

His friends and family will be there for the Games, which run from July 26-Aug. 11. The qualifying heats for the men’s four are July 28 and the final will be Aug. 1. Corrigan is one of three Olympic rowers from Connecticut who have qualified. Oliver Bub of Westport will row in the men’s pair and Kelsey Reelick of Brookfield has qualified, though it was uncertain in which boat she would compete. Others could qualify May 19-21 at a World Cup regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland.

The last Games were not quite the experience Corrigan wanted; neither was the result. It was the second time in a row the men’s eight had finished fourth in the Games.

“Yeah, fourth is pretty much the worse place to finish,” said Corrigan, 26, who lives mainly in San Francisco now, where he works full time for a private equity company. “I think the thing was it wasn’t a horrible result. We were a young crew, we didn’t have so much race experience. If you were to replay that race 10 times, we’re probably getting a medal somewhere between 3-6 of those times. We were racing fast crews. We were only a second behind second and third and two seconds behind first.”

After that, and another fourth place at the 2022 world championships, the U.S. teams were revamped. Three of the rowers from the 2021 Olympic eight, including Corrigan, and one from the Olympic four boat were placed in this year’s four boat, making the team very experienced.

Last year, the four placed second at the world championships with essentially the same group of teams which will compete in Paris this summer.

Liam Corrigan (left), a rower from Old Lyme, will return to the Olympics for the second time this summer, this time in the U.S. men's four boat. Corrigan, who rowed at Harvard and Oxford, was in the U.S. eight boat that finished fourth in the Tokyo Olympics (photo by row2K).

“That was a good result,” he said. “We lost to Great Britain by less than two seconds. We had been in the boat for about two months. We’re pretty excited; we think we’ve made some pretty significant improvements since then.”

After the last Olympics, Corrigan – who rowed at Harvard, graduating in 2019 – decided to get a masters degree from Oxford. His ulterior motive was to row for Oxford and get a chance to compete in The Boat Race , one of oldest and most prestigious amateur sporting events in the world, where Oxford rows against Cambridge. Corrigan was the only American in the eight boat, which had five Olympians in it for the 2022 race. Oxford won.

The rowers in the U.S. four boat have been training together for about a year. They will head to Switzerland for a regatta May 19-21 to race then will spend a little more time training then head off to Paris. His parents, his girlfriend and friends from college will be coming to watch this time.

“I’m very excited,” Corrigan said. “Excited to race too. You do a lot of training, long miles, and this year we have two races – this World Cup and the Olympics.”
