Lagoon 55 review: new iteration remains quintessential cat

34 years on from the original Lagoon 55, the new iteration shows how much catamaran design has evolved towards loft living with a sea view from the terrace. François Tregouet reports

lagoon 55 catamaran review

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

The number 55 holds a special place in the history of Lagoon – it was its inaugural model, launched back in 1987. The 2021 version of the Lagoon 55, still designed by VPLP, is the quintessential modern cruising catamaran according to the world leader in the multihull market. Yachting World was able to hop aboard to measure just how far we’ve come from one millennium to the next.

Legend has it that the first Lagoon 55 was christened Lagoon , and that her owner drew the logo, the now famous palm frond, on a restaurant tablecloth.

After years of sailing on the family’s First 456, she wanted to ‘sail flat and have more space’. Convinced of the advantages of the catamaran, she wanted the silhouette to ‘resemble that of a monohull ’.

Thirty-four years later, three design studios were involved in the creation of the brand-new Lagoon 55, including former Renault chief designer Patrick Le Quément on the exterior design. The imposing topsides deliver taut lines, sculpted bows and a pronounced lower chine to maximise interior living space yet minimise wetted surface area.

Article continues below…

A new feature from the Bordeaux-based yard is that the sugarscoop transoms extend beyond the topsides to make access to the boat easier. Once aboard, two steps lead up to the cockpit which is flush-decked with the aft platform. With the mainsheet track now on the bimini the aft beam disappears, freeing up the view and your options for moving around: this is a real terrace on the sea.

Such fluidity of circulation is also to be found in the forward cockpit, no longer ‘dug’ into the foredeck but integrated seamlessly on the same level as the trampoline. With its comfortable seating, two options for sun protection and communication with the interior via the opening front window, this is a completely revised living space.

Command station

Higher up, it seems there’s now no longer a question of whether to have a flybridge on a 55ft cat – it’s a mandatory feature. The optional rigid bimini obviously means the boom is quite a lot higher, compelling the crew to undertake some challenging manoeuvres.

A second access to the flybridge on the starboard side deck, an option not fitted on our test boat, will avoid the need for any further acrobatics. Without it, it’s a long way from the helm to the foredeck via the aft cockpit to, for example, set the Code 0.

These couple of reservations aside, the flybridge has a lot going for it. In addition to the forward and aft sunbathing areas and the outdoor galley, the forward-facing flybridge table and seating is very pleasant – in good weather and moderate wind anyway.

From their position to starboard, the person at the helm has a very good 270° view for manoeuvring off the pontoon and leaving harbour. At the foot of the mast, which has been moved aft in keeping with current trends, all sailing manoeuvres are carried out using three winches. The mainsail is hoisted and the self-tacking genoa unfurled with ease, by a single crewmember.

However, on the day of our test, the Catalan coast was building up a swell, and the wind wasn’t forecast to exceed 9 knots. There was a lack of square metres to our white sails to get the fully-laden 33 tonnes moving forward. So a 154m² Code 0 was quickly unfurled, allowing us to sail at between 5.5 and 6.5 knots with the wind on the beam.

We then bore off under the 272m² asymmetric spinnaker at an average of 5.5 knots before returning upwind (40° to the apparent) at 5 knots. The Lagoon is very easy to handle, and with a little more time – and wind– we might have validated the 8- to 9-knot average speeds claimed by the works crew on their European tour.

Italian influence

The third group to have worked on this version 3.0 of the Lagoon 55 is Nauta Design, who drew the interiors. The joinery and materials are reminiscent of the atmosphere aboard Lagoon’s two big cats, the Sixty 5 and Seventy 7. This illustrates the high-end positioning of the 55, which for the time being tops the manufacturer’s ‘classic’ range.

While the hulls are available with four, five and even six-cabin versions, the layout in the nacelle remains identical. The L-shaped galley on the starboard side is extended by a nice bar unit.

The large U-shaped bench seat simply invites you to settle in comfortably, still with an unrestricted view of the sea. The telescopic table also adapts to suit the use.

There is plenty of stowage space, from floor hatches to bookshelves. In the four-cabin version we tested, the owner’s cabin, aft on the starboard side, enjoys a privileged amount of space, occupying two-thirds of the hull. That said, the guests in the three other cabins have nothing to complain about, each with an en-suite.

Some 20 examples of the original 1987 Lagoon 55 were built but, even ahead of the official launch, its namesake from 2021 has already had more orders – confirmation enough that Lagoon excels in understanding the expectations of today’s sailors. The aesthetics may no longer have much to do with that of a monohull, and the displacement inherent with such volumes doesn’t lend itself to pleasure at the helm, but you have to be impressed by the variety of different spaces available inside and out this catamaran, as well as the level of finish. Ultimately, the design team has succeeded in integrating several big innovations, especially on the exterior. In this sense, the Lagoon 55, 2021 version, is a worthy heir to the original. It sets new standards for ‘Crossing the oceans in comfort and serenity’ as was the ambition stated in the sales brochure... from 1987.

The Lagoon 55: Built for the Long Haul

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • September 6, 2022

Lagoon 55

In February, French boat builder Lagoon brought Hull No. 2 of its 55-foot luxury catamaran to the Miami International Boat Show. I can easily see this long-legged bluewater cruiser finding a niche among its siblings that range in length from 40 to 77 feet.

The 55, designed by VPLP, has an interior by Nauta and exterior styling by Patrick le Quément. Given its size and systems, the 55 will likely be a boat that many private owners will staff with a captain and mate, though it’s well-laid-out for a shorthanded crew, and certainly would be suitable for an owner-skipper who is up for the job of maintenance.

And in charter , where Lagoons have long been popular? Well, let’s count the ways the 55 could be enjoyed.

First, there’s the flybridge, where the helm is located. Steps to either side ensure a good flow of traffic. The wheel is offset to starboard. Just forward of it, close at hand, three electric winches handle all the sail-control lines except for the traveler; that’s adjusted using an electric continuous-line winch whose push-button controls are mounted nearby. Abaft the helm, there’s a sink and fridge alongside a U-shaped seating area that surrounds a low cocktail table—a lovely place to sit.

Below, in the cockpit, are two more tables to starboard with tops that unfold to seat a crowd. There are also multiple cushioned lounges, all facing aft to take in the view astern. When raised, the swim platform/tender storage area provides a balcony over the water. Lowered, it’s a place to sit and hang feet in the water.

Directly forward of the cabin house, there’s another U-shaped seating area, and the center window in the saloon opens so refreshments can be passed out to anyone sitting there. The 55 has a self-tacking jib, with a sheet that’s led to a track on the coachroof just ahead of the mast, keeping lines out of the way on the foredeck. There is also a sprit with an electric furler for a code zero. During the show, the boat was rigged with a cloth sunshade over the forward seating area, held aloft by a pair of removable carbon-fiber poles.

The boat in Miami carried a price tag of $2.2 million. That included options such as teak soles on the flybridge, in the cockpit and on the transoms; air conditioning; extra refrigeration; a washer and dryer amidships in the port hull; a pair of upgraded 115 hp Nanni engines with saildrives (80 hp diesels are standard); and a suite of B&G electronics.

Lagoon offers a number of interior layouts. This boat had four staterooms. The owner’s en suite stateroom was aft in the starboard hull, with a smaller guest stateroom forward. On the port side, two additional guest staterooms sat fore and aft, with a crew cabin (with its own head and shower) in the forepeak. The interior volume in the hulls allowed all the guest berths to be laid out athwartships.

Five- and six-stateroom layouts are also available, and an owner can choose to have the galley up or down. All told, the 55 could have berths for 16 people.

Throughout the interior, ports and hatches abound, letting in lots of light and providing views of the world outside. In my notes, I jotted down “elegant” to describe the boat’s look and feel.

Under power at a cruising rpm of 2,000, we saw readings of about 9 knots on the GPS. The steering seemed a bit sluggish both motoring and under sail, but the boat had arrived just prior to the show, and I’d suspected that it just needed an adjustment.

The breeze barely broke 10 knots on our sea trial, and we weren’t able to fly the code-zero sail due to missing gear, but with the self-tacker set, we moved along closehauled at about 6 knots, and gained another knot and a half by bearing off to a beam reach.

It was a comfortable ride. Sailing along, it didn’t take me long to find my sweet spot on the 55: the seat incorporated into the far forward lifeline stanchion, where I hung one arm over the wire and sat watching the bows slice through the waves. Believe me when I say that I could have stayed there all day.

Lagoon 55 Review

Here she is – the British Yachting Awards 2021 Winner in all her beauty! You can immediately notice, that Patrick le Quément didn’t try to go for predatory monohull look with sharp edges and pointy hulls, instead, this catamaran looks quite peaceful and serene, which is exactly the right approach considering the intended target audience – comfort lovers.

This cat is all about incredible for 16.5-meter vessel amount of space and comfort on board and not exactly about beating the racing world records. Even though it has huge 107 m² fully battened mainsail, the job cut out for this mainsail isn’t an easy one, since the boat has enough space for 6 cabins in its charter version, tons of storage space, hydraulic aft platform, solid metal railing in many places and a flybridge with hard top, all of which adds up to hefty 27.7 tons of displacement.

Lagoon 55 Review

Yet once you get on board you understand exactly why the speed here doesn’t matter as much. That’s because it’s unusual for any real estate to move at all actually – Lagoon 55 feels like a real mini-hotel on the water with full-size lockers everywhere, big hatches inside decks, two tables in the cockpit, three places for cooking and, in owner’s version, a separate island bed and a shower for each cabin! And let’s not forget the long-lasting 960-liter water tanks and whopping 1100 liters of fuel for long voyages.

You can easily live here for months and since the boat is qualified for ocean crossings, do so while travelling all around the world at the same. But let’s get on board and discuss these and many other features in more detail.

Virtual tour

Review of lagoon 55 by toprik team.

Our team got a chance to get on board Lagoon 55 in the end of 2022, when the mass production of the boat didn’t even fully begin, but the yachtsmen already ordered shocking 550 models in advance.

When I first saw the yacht live, I immediately thought of something big, happy and tasty, since it kind of looks like a big white wedding cake, with the flybridge being the top layer of it. Overall, this boat just inspires all kinds of honeymoon dreams indeed and makes you think of spending some quality time with your loved ones away from the rest of the world.

Lagoon 55 Review

The transom looks quite Lagoon-esque, as it should – two small platforms for getting on board from the berth, one for each hull, with an enormous hydraulic swimming platform in-between and reliable railing right in front of it (the platform is optional, but highly recommended). Wooden flooring gives you traction and railing to each side of steps leading into cockpit allow you to grab onto something while climbing or hold onto it while you enjoy the views, which is such simple but actually quite rare feature for vessels of this size. As usual, the platform can be used for attaching a dinghy or will become a favorite spot for scuba divers and fishing lovers as is.

Lagoon 55 Review

As you can see, the sides are not exactly symmetrical. The swimming ladder on the right and the seat right next to it could be just copied onto the other side, but two ladders at once seemed excessive to the VPLP’s design team. Instead, you get that white box on the opposite side as an option – this is a grill, which allows you to quickly cook either something you purchased at a marina or caught yourself using a fishing rod. It’s one of the best places for cooking on the entire boat since the smell will be carried away immediately by the wind. Sure, such endeavor will require full stop and anchorage for safety reasons.

Lagoon 55 Review

The wide swimming platform can also be used for sunbathing if you bring some additional lounger there. It can be raised/lowered into the water in about 20 seconds while withstanding the weight of multiple passengers at once.

Lagoon 55 Review

Near the steps you can see the outlines of a hatch – this is how you can access the powerful Yanmar engines – either 2 x 80 hp or 2 x 115 hp (optional). The engines come with so-called common rail, which controls everything that has to do with diesel system with a lot of sensors and indicators. The fresh water pump system is located at the same compartment, which has a lot of space (again) to conduct maintenance.

On the photo above you can already see the inside of the cockpit. And here comes the main superpower of Lagoon 55 – the SPACE. When you think of a boat of this size you don’t really expect to have two tables at the cockpit with such a huge C-shaped sofa around it, a sunbathing area next to it and another coach near the deck steps just for fun.

Lagoon 55 Review

Here’s a photo from the starboard – here you can see the comfortable poufs all around, tables that can be connected into a bigger one if needed and all of that is, of course, covered not by a flimsy canopy but by a full-size hard top with reliable beams supporting it. Behind the tables you get an outdoor galley. Yes, another cooking space for those who love to enjoy the fresh air while at it. It comes equipped with a sink, a large cupboard and a freezer.

Lagoon 55 Review

Thanks to our practical knowledge over the years, we know that during rough weather such openness might become a problem as freezing wind and rain will occasionally try and ruin the party – in that case you can transform the cockpit into a huge wind- and waterproof tent by using a hard transparent cover, that goes all around the perimeter.

Around 8 to 10 people can easily accommodate in here at all times. Those seats are not wasted either – under each of them there are big lockers, where you can store fenders, rafts, halyards and spare parts. In the flooring you can see more hatches – these are also for storage, four in total including one near the platform, providing tons of room for various equipment.

Normally we go and visit other areas first, but there are whole two ladders leading to the flybridge from the cockpit and our already experienced skipper wanted to experience even more helm action right away (starboard ladder is an option). So here we are.

Lagoon 55 Review

This is how the flybridge of Lagoon 55 looks when you climb it using the portside ladder. On this official photo you can see how easily multiple people can fit in here. We figured that much on our own - our team of six people didn’t have any problems at all with finding a seat.

Immediately you can notice a roomy helm station, another huge sofa and a big folding table (unfolded here), helm station and electric winches next to it. It doesn’t seem like something unusual immediately, until you remember that it’s a boat and not a porch of a villa. It’s also the distances between those everyday items that are so surprising. Let’s look to our left now.

Lagoon 55 Review

Here you can see the spiderweb of halyards and all the winches, which are electrically driven for your comfort - except for the traveler sail-control lines, but that can be adjusted with continuous-line winch. You have storage compartments for halyards everywhere, even behind you. The total area with code 0 is 266 m² and all of that goodness can be controlled by just one person.

Lagoon 55 Review

The self-tacking jib is controlled from here by the sheet that is led to a track ahead of the mast – this way the foredeck area isn’t filled with lines as much as it would be otherwise. Electric furler for code 0 is right here also. Harken FlatWinder allows you to manage the boat along during maneuvers.

Lagoon 55 Review

The folding seating area is big enough for two and is just as comfortable as a sofa nearby. Raymarine chartplotter , autopilot, radio and other necessary equipment is under your fingertips, as well as impressive full-size helm instead of a racing steering wheel – nobody is in a hurry when living on board Lagoon 55. Cupholders here are a reminder of that.

Lagoon 55 Review

Yes, we are still on the flybridge. This is an aft sunbathing area and unlike some more limited flybridges out there you don’t have to look out for a boom hitting you on the head or worry about your safety thanks to even more railing, just high enough to prevent rolling onto the deck. There’s enough room for around 5 passengers here and usually on monohull of that size you are lucky to have enough room for a couple. More storages here too – under these comfortable beds there are two more lockers. In front the helm station, behind the mast, there’s another similar sunbathing area, so you get two at once, both with conveniently placed cupholders also.

Lagoon 55 Review

As for the dining area, you might’ve noticed something familiar to galley into the cockpit next to the table. Yes, this is a third cooking area on the yacht and we didn’t even enter the saloon yet. You get the freezer, sink and even more storage. Overall incredible area. Skylights cut into an optional bimini to better see the sails are a nice touch too.

Lagoon 55 Review

While we are still in fresh air, let’s go visit the bow. We go along the decks which are protected with a certain mix of rails and lifelines (a certain compromise) and arrive at this cozy leisure area.

Lagoon 55 Review

As you can see, you can invest some of your funds into getting a soft unfolding tent to be prepared for scorching summer sun and enjoy a cold drink in the shadow. Another huge C-shaped sofa with a coffee table and, of course, under the seats there’s another locker. Here it is without the cover – looks very inviting.

Lagoon 55 Review

There’s more to it though. Various hatches on the bow house a marine generator, which is also very convenient to maintain for a mechanic, more storage and a crew cabin. The crew cabin is very limited in amenities, but has all the necessities, including a sink and a toilet.

The tip of the bow is also well protected, has a usual for Lagoon cats trampoline net and a small seat for each hull for those romantic moments.

Lagoon 55 Review

We go all the way back and open the three-part sliding door as we enter the saloon. If Lagoon 55 is a hotel, then this must be its main hall – look the amount of living areas inside, the windows the are actually windows and not hatches, and even the book shelves behind that sofa! Where else would you have enough room for bookshelves?

Lagoon 55 Review

The colors are very welcoming, without minimalistic cold tones and the wooden textures everywhere create a more relaxed mood. Nauta Design, who planned the interiors, made sure to fill the saloon with as much light as possible not only through the windows around, but also through large skylights on top, which can always be covered with blinds. That beam in the center looks a little out of place, but there’s no other way to design such a large saloon without it having structural weaknesses other than with a holding beam.

To your left you get the full-size skipper’s table with radio, chartplotter and all the necessary switches, good enough to keep the boat steady from here. To the right there’s another (fourth!) cooking area, and this time the designers went full out: the fridge, table and sink are larger, there’s around ten different lockers around, full-size oven and a microwave are available and the stove looks just like that one at your house. Next to it you have a mini-bar with a couple of electric sockets.

Lagoon 55 Review

In the middle of the saloon you get a flexible hydraulic table, that can be transformed from a low coffee table into a legitimate dining table, in case you want to dine inside instead of using the one at the cockpit. The TV controls are right near the sofa. If you look closely at the ceiling, you will see it’s outline – it comes out of the ceiling through an electric life after you push the button. After that you can adjust and rotate it anyway you want.

Lagoon 55 Review

And as if all those lockers are not enough, inside the saloon’s floor there 4 more hatches for storing equipment. Underneath sofa there also drawers for clothes and other luggage.

Now let’s try and see what’s on the other side of that ladder near the skipper’s table.

As we climb down, we immediately bump into a… full-size fridge and a washing machine? Yes, that’s what money buys in the case of Lagoon 55 – full home experience on the ocean waves. Of course, the washing machine is optional, but just the idea of being able to add it in here is wild. This way you can have a pantry and a laundry room just near the steps in the corridor.

Lagoon 55 Review

From here we immediately decided to go aft, into the owner’s cabin (normally we review the owner versions). Our model had 4 cabins total, but there are also layouts for 5 and 6 cabins.

The VIP cabin has larger bed, three large wardrobes, the desk and a lot of drawers underneath the bed.

Lagoon 55 Review

Based on our own experience, we can say that the most defining feature on expensive yachts is the owner’s cabin’s storage space. Previously we had some complaints regarding this issue on other boats we reviewed, but this time we can’t really nitpick at anything. All the luggage, all the suits and shirts you can think of – it will all fit in here easily. The amount of lighting in here is also a sign of luxury – only very high-quality boats can allow such big openings for the hatches in their structure. Of course, a boat with this price tag you have the separate bathroom too with walk-in shower, large sink and mirror.

As for other cabins, they can easily qualify as owner cabin on some more modest yachts and even outshine them in some cases. Here’s the forward port cabin, for example. It definitely has more storage space than VIP cabins on monohulls of the same length and also comes with another bathroom. The starboard forward cabin looks similar, but mirrored.

Lagoon 55 Review

Advantages of Lagoon 55

After finishing our tour, it is time to list what advantages this yacht has over others. Here’s what we think.

  • Space. Multihull World in their review rightfully called Lagoon 55 a “Space Ship” – this is the main feature of the vessel and has very little competitors in this category considering the overall length. The boat is pretty much made of lockers, hatches, drawers and cupboard all with big terraces for a group of friends or a large party.
  • Easy sails management. Yes, some people might shake their head at all-electric winches, but this yacht is not about showing off your regatta skills exactly. It’s is about comfort, including the management – you don’t need crewmen helping you with winches sprinkled all over the deck like at some sporty yachts.
  • Incredible quality of life on board. Teak soles, air conditioning, washer and dryer, full kitchen in the saloon any many other features make you want to live here indefinitely.
  • Marketability. This yacht, thanks to 6-cabin version, crew cabin and very spacious layout in general, is a perfect fit for any businessman who looks to increase to size of his flotilla for tourism.

As for disadvantages… We thought about it and decided that the main con here for some potential buyers might be the price tag. Like all good things in life, this yacht demands a large investment to enjoy it, especially with recommended packages, effectively putting you into a very small and prestigious circle of yachtsmen as a result.

Reviews of Lagoon 55 from Professionals

As we promised, we provide you the opinions of people who know a thing or two about yachts themselves.

Robert H. Perry

Right off the bat Robert writes that Lagoon 55 has room for a crowd for comfortable sailing that also should definitely get everybody’s attention at the marina. He rightfully admits that cruising catamarans are all about amenities. The more features you can fit on board, the more buyers you get. It just keeps working.

He also praises the space of the living areas, including the galley, the size of which can be adjusted thanks to the layout choice. Usually, the author has a problem with cruising cats when it comes to dining areas, but this time he agrees with the designer’s decision at the aft cockpit.

As for sailing performance, Robert likes that sail controls keep the lounging areas free of halyard chaos. He specifically pointed out the convenience of bimini at the flybridge.

Overall, Robert calls it a handsome cat that is “nicely sculpted” and is sure that this one will be popular.

Mark Pillsbury

One and only Mark Pillsbury starts by showcasing various uses of the boat by potential buyers: it is attractive both for picky owners and for charter businesses, where Lagoons have always been popular. He points out the comfortable way the sails are managed at the flybridge, convenience of lunges at the cockpit and a nice swim platform that can be used as a balcony above the water surface.

Additional to five- and six-cabin layouts, owner can also choose to put the galley up or down. Overall, the boat can have enough space for 16 people on board total if you go for quantity. As for lighting and feel of the interiors, the author wrote down the word “elegant” in his notes to describe it.

The performance is not the strongest side of this cat, but it still felt comfortable. With wind of 10 knots the yacht moves at around 6 knots and under engines with cruising rpm of 2000 you can reach 9 knots in similar conditions.

Video Reviews

More reviews from other sources, this time caught on camera.

First, we give the word to Toby Hodges, a true scholar in his field, working for Yachting World:

TMG Yachts continues the streak of amazingly detailed reviews:

A little biased, but high-quality – video from Lagoon Catamarans themselves:

More technical point of view on Lagoon 55 from Salty Mechanics:

Great commentary and demonstration of the boat at Miami Boat Show:

Not all yachts are made the same. This one is definitely built different – built for comfort, for relaxation, for holidays and long ocean crossings without a care in the world. Some will try their best to squeeze out as much as possible knots out of their vessel and some just want to barbecue a steak next to their friends. We can definitely see that lately many manufacturers are definitely turning more towards the latter, including Lagoon .

Lagoon 55 Review

This boat is made for enjoying life instead of challenging it. It is made to throw a party for your friends or for the entire marina if needed – they can all fit no problem. It is made for a couple who have no problem managing the boat together, just like they manage their family. And during a vacation as a parent, you will not have to worry about children’s safety on board the yacht as it is built with that in mind too.

With Lagoon 55, you buy accommodations and comfort instead of speed and manual management. If you are into that, then this yacht is for you – short and simple.

The Lagoon 55: Sailing Luxury Reimagined in Croatia and Greece

The Lagoon 55: Sailing Luxury Reimagined in Croatia and Greece

The Mediterranean, with its glistening waters, historical landscapes, and sun-kissed islands, remains an eternal favorite among sailors. When exploring these azure waters, especially around the scenic coastlines of Croatia and Greece, it’s essential to have a vessel that matches the grandeur of the surroundings. Enter the Lagoon 55 – a symbol of modern luxury combined with performance that promises unparalleled yacht experiences.

The Lagoon Essence:

Over the years, Lagoon has solidified its position as a leader in luxury catamaran construction. Each of their yachts is a testimony to the brand’s dedication to quality, performance, and aesthetic appeal. The Lagoon 55 holds true to this legacy, merging sophisticated design with state-of-the-art features.

An Interior that Speaks Luxury:

The all new Lagoon 55 is offered in 4, 5, and even 6 cabin layouts to choose from. In the variant with six cabins, the saloon area has a slightly modified layout, which makes gaining access to the rooms both simpler and more discrete. Every single cabin has its own private bathroom and en-suite amenities, regardless of the version you choose.

The owner’s cabin on a vessel with four cabins is the largest and most private of them all. It is located on the starboard side and takes up two-thirds of the hull. Other travelers have nothing to gripe about because every one of their cabins has its own private bathroom. This means that they have nothing to worry about.

In the variant with five cabins, the owner’s stateroom is split into two separate cabins, with the exception of the aft starboard cabin, which has its entrance in the cockpit.

In the version with six cabins, the cockpit may be used to enter either of the aft cabins, but the saloon’s arrangement is modified in such a way that steps can be used to enter any of the forward cabins.

When you buy a brand-new Lagoon 55, you also have the option of designing your own interior arrangement.

The selection of high-end materials sends a strong message that Lagoon intends for this new model to compete in the high-end market.

Additionally, there is a generous amount of natural light provided in the bar area by two large windows located overhead. Each cabin has been designed with careful consideration paid to the nuances of its natural lighting, and the cabin’s designers collaborated closely to achieve the ideal sense of being in perfect harmony with nature.

Upon entering the Lagoon 55 , one can’t help but be taken aback by its meticulously crafted interior.

  • Rooms: Each cabin, designed with utmost precision, offers a harmonious blend of comfort and luxury. The use of high-quality materials, plush linens, and ample space ensures that each moment inside feels regal. Large windows allow natural light, making the rooms feel airy and offering breathtaking views of the seascape.
  • Saloon: The saloon stands out with its expansive layout. It serves as a perfect setting for relaxation, entertainment, or simply admiring the beauty outside. Equipped with modern entertainment systems and comfortable seating, it’s the heart of the yacht’s interior.
  • Kitchen (Galley): The kitchen in the Lagoon 55 isn’t just functional; it’s a chef’s delight. With state-of-the-art appliances, spacious countertops, and storage solutions, preparing meals, whether simple or gourmet, becomes a pleasure.

Yacht Specifications:

Exterior excellence:.

There is no longer any debate over the necessity of a flybridge on big catamarans; today, it is standard equipment. If we consider the Lagoon 55 to be an extension of the Lagoon 52 (which it is), then it goes without saying that the flybridge is far more impressive and spacious. Its primary function is that of an additional deck, and in addition to a dining area that faces forward and a mini-bar with a refrigerator, there is also a sunbathing area on this deck. When the weather is nice, sitting on the flybridge is a very pleasurable experience.

The only issue the inspection crew found with the ship was the way it allowed passengers to access the flybridge. Because the starboard entry was not installed in the version that was used for testing, we strongly recommend having that starboard entrance installed in the new boat that you purchase. When there are two access points to the fly, it is significantly simpler for a single member of the crew to handle all of the motions. If you don’t have it, getting from the flybridge to the bow of the ship via the aft deck is a somewhat laborious process.

Since the bimini is stiff and cannot be adjusted, it stands to reason that the boom should be situated higher. Because of this, the crew may have to perform some acrobatic maneuvers in order to manage the sails and ropes around the boom.

The exterior of the Lagoon 55 is as impressive as its interiors.

  • Flybridge: One of the yacht’s crowning jewels, the flybridge provides a 360-degree view of the surroundings. Whether you’re steering the vessel, sunbathing, or just soaking in the panorama, the flybridge experience is unmatched.
  • Sailing Experience: The Lagoon 55 isn’t just about luxury; it’s a beast on the water. Its unique hull design, combined with the latest navigational systems, ensures smooth sailing, whether you’re coasting along the calm waters of Croatia or venturing into the deeper seas of Greece. The yacht promises stability, making even first-time sailors feel at ease.

Material & Craftsmanship:

No detail is too small for Lagoon. The Lagoon 55 is constructed using the finest materials, ensuring durability, stability, and luxury. From the teakwood decks to the stainless-steel fittings and the soft furnishings within, every inch echoes Lagoon’s commitment to excellence.

Performance that Matches Its Looks:

A yacht’s true test lies in its performance. The Lagoon 55 , with its twin engines and aerodynamic design, promises speed and power without compromising on comfort. Its adaptability to different sea conditions makes it ideal for sailing in the varied terrains of Croatia and Greece.

Conclusion:

Lagoon, the world’s most well-known brand of catamarans, did not choose the name “Lagoon 55” for their very first model because they wanted to make a good impression. We should offer our congratulations to the designers of the new model because it features several design advancements that have not been seen before. Cooperation with Nauta Design on the interiors unmistakably places this model in the “Big Four” category of the Lagoon brand, which denotes a more opulent category of boat that is, nonetheless, still accessible to the average person, particularly in the charter business. It is possible that in the following six to seven years, it will be a “great buy.”

This boat comes furnished with a BBQ and a number of different water equipment, including stand-up paddleboards, a kayak, a wakeboard, a water tube, waterskis, and electric scooters, in order to make your time on the water an even more enjoyable one.

To charter the Lagoon 55 is to embrace a world of luxury, performance, and unforgettable experiences. Whether anchored by a secluded Croatian beach or sailing through the iconic Greek isles, this yacht promises memories that will last a lifetime.

The New Lagoon 55: Launch

You can also find our full Lagoon 55 Review here .

We recently attended the Lagoon 55 press conference (online of course: thanks Covid!)

lagoon 55 catamaran review

Despite the limitations of doing a Zoom call to launch a new catamaran, Lagoon did a good job of showcasing their new model.

The new 55 is a special boat for Lagoon as their first ever launch was a 55. This boat represents decades of development from the French manufacturer.

The Terrace

One of the key features of the new curvy Lagoon is the design of the transoms which bring you closer to the water at anchor. They have opened up the back and extended the living space at anchor with an innovative hydraulic aft platform. The steps up from the sugar-scoops flow up diagonally rather than fore-aft.

In the saloon, big windows and two skylights help to bring the outdoors in with lots of natural light and all round views from the living spaces.

lagoon 55 catamaran review

The Lagoon 55 has some innovative design features while keeping close to the Lagoon DNA of recent years. With the huge aft cockpit extended with the swimming platform, the flybridge, the saloon and the forward cockpit, this is not a catamaran that is going to feel cramped.

This yacht should be another top seller for the Bordeaux firm.

Are Lagoon Catamarans Good? A Complete Review

Lagoon is a leading catamaran manufacturer famous for its luxury products and state-of-the-art boats. However, if you’re considering purchasing a cruising catamaran, you may get overwhelmed by the vast selection of boats on the market, and you might be left to wonder if Lagoon catamarans are worth the money, especially after the big “bulkhead-issues” debate started by Youtube channel Parlay Revival.

Lagoon catamarans are great if you’re looking for spacious interiors and exteriors and have a large family to consider. They’re perfect for parties, and the sturdy construction and luxurious looks are favorable. However, they are known for having bulkhead issues (L450) and are sometimes critiqued for poor build quality.

In this article, I will explore the pros and cons of Lagoon catamarans, describe the most popular Lagoon cats’ features in detail, and offer some useful tips on choosing the right cat for your needs.

The Pros of Lagoon Catamarans

Lagoon has been building catamarans for almost 40 years , and with nearly 6,000 vessels under their belt, it’s safe to say they know what they’re doing. They have nine different sailing models, meaning you have even more choice than ever.

Let’s take a look at what sets Lagoon apart from the rest.

They’re Spacious

Lagoon catamarans are famous for being large and spacious , making them a perfect choice for big families and gatherings. Most Lagoon models have 3 or 4 cabins with lots of storage space and roomy sleeping arrangements.

The galleys feature under-counter fridges and nestled microwave ovens, creating a safe and even more spacious accommodation. Dining tables, freezers, and bench seats easily fit in the big galleys to create a homey feel.

Most models also feature large flybridges with enough room to offer navigation and relaxation at the same time.

Lagoon cats’ saloons and cabins are famous for being friendly to tall sailors. Most of them feature double-berth accommodations with individual showers and head compartments.

They Are Bulit Strong (Most…)

One of the biggest advantages of Lagoon cats is their sturdy construction. Made of balsa wood covered with fiberglass layers through vacuum infusion molding, the furniture in the interior and exterior constructions are strong and lightweight.

Plus, all parts of the boats are well-finished with vinyl ester resin to avoid osmosis.

The interior is also a combination of luxury and long service life with core-mat sandwich or solid glass and Alpi wood laminates.

They use dry layering instead of wet layering, leading to more resistance and precise positioning. Plus, the dry technology allows for the use of less resin, making the designs more lightweight.

Every corner has perfect seals to avoid any leakage or cracks, and the infusion technology makes sure the construction is soundproof, durable, and rigid.

BUT! And this is a big but, there have been some issues with the Lagoon 450 bulkheads, the issue involves some very poorly constructed main bulkheads which tends to break and once broken it will transfer the loads to other smaller bulkheads. This starts a chain reaction that in the end weakens the boat’s structural integrity to the point where I would question its seaworthiness.

If you are buying an Lagoon 450 it is a MUST to check the bulkheads for cracks! Gabo

If you want to better understand this problem I suggest you check out this video from parlay revival.

They Boast Spacious and Clean Decks

Another strength of Lagoon cats is their exterior spaces. Like the interiors, the decks are spacious and wide, with many storage compartments and lockers with trampolines and sunbathing areas.

There are sliding doors between the exterior and interior spaces that can provide extra room for big gatherings, and all parts on the flybridges are easily accessible.

In some models, the stairs directly go to the cockpit, leading to more safety, too.

A few weeks ago a went on a day trip on a Lagoon 380, the boat is quite small with its 38ft, but Lagoon really utilize every centimeter and the boat feels huge.

Lagoon Has a Huge Owners Community

Since there are so many Lagoons sailing around the world, getting an experienced sailor to answer your model-specific questions is never hard. This, I believe, is one of the largest benefits of having a Lagoon, since sooner or later you will have to do repairs, it is a comfort to know there will be people around you that can help you out.

They’re Luxurious

Luxury is the word intended to come to mind when thinking of Lagoon catamarans. All the sturdiness, rigidness, and durability come wrapped under a rich layer of anti-UV finishes.

The interiors are very well-lit, with big windows at eye level offering panoramic views, making it seem like an exclusive hotel room rather than a boat’s cockpit.

Most of the boats have U-shaped seating areas and pleasant furnishing, and the Alpi wood finish gives everything a sleek, elegant look, combining comfort and sophistication.

They’re Safe

Lagoon cats are all well thought out for safety considerations, with handrails all over the place for safe movements even in bad weather conditions. The decks are wide and clutter-free, and the running rigging is suitable for short-handed sailing.

They all conform to the Conformitè Europëenne ( CE ) standards for the unsinkability of multihulls. Everything in the living space is waterproof, and all the wiring is high quality and reliable.

If you are looking for some serious offshore cruising, there will be things you will have to change on every boat so that it fits your specific needs, if you want to know more about offshore cruising, I suggest you read some other articles I wrote called:

Cons of Lagoon Catamarans

As with any product on the market, nothing is perfect. Lagoon catamarans may exceed in luxury and safety, but there are some areas that customers find they are lacking.

Below are some of the areas that may leave you opting for another catamaran manufacturer.

lagoon 55 catamaran review

They’re Bulky

Although Lagoon has tried hard to reduce weight, some experts still consider them to be bulky. For example, some models, like the Lagoon 440, are among one of the heaviest models on the market. Some call it a “condomaran” to refer to its lowered performance due to its large size.

However, the company has tried to address this issue by making more compact models while allowing for more volume.

They Can Be Costly

Lagoon cats’ high costs are probably the most significant drawback compared to other big names with similar features. Their hefty prices may be a real turn-off for some sailing enthusiasts. But with their large selection of boats from different models and specs, they have a boat for every budget.

Expect to pay a little bit more just because of the name.

They’re Not Very Fast

These wide spacious catamarans come at the cost of speed. However, newer models have addressed the issue and perform reasonably well both upwind and downwind.

Lagoon catamarans will never be Gunboat or an outremer so if your looking for exciting and fast sailing this is probably not the right boat for you.

But, If you don’t have much sailing skill and want to make sure you have some extra margins of safety Lagoon cats might be the best choice for you.

The Tall Rig Can Be an Issue in Ports and under Bridges

Some models, such as Lagoon 52, have tall rigs to increase windward efficiency and improve the performance in the wind. However, the tall rig can be a problem under bridges.

Popular Lagoon Models

Lagoon has constantly been trying to address its most common issues with newer models and beat their previous models, even if they were wildly popular.

This sense of competition has led to plenty of innovations. For example, it launched its Lagoon 420 in 2006 as the first catamaran in the world with hybrid propulsion.

Below are some of the most popular Lagoon cats in its history, starting with the best seller and working down in terms of units sold. If buying new is not an option, some of these older models may be just what you’re looking for.

lagoon 55 catamaran review

The Lagoon 380 is the top seller catamaran globally, although the company has discontinued it.

As mentioned before, I sailed an L380 just a few weeks ago, and here is a short description of that cat.

The L380 has four cabins with two bathrooms, is 11.5 m (38 ft) long, and has two engines. Its most praised feature is its comfortable, simple, and convenient accommodations with oodles of overhead clearance, spacious galleys, and large cabins.

Although it’s slow, it gets the job done because it’s easy to control and performs well enough in poor water and weather conditions. It’s also easy to dock because of its small size, and the two engines make it highly maneuverable.

The 380 is said to reach up to nine knots in good weather with a decent breeze , (we maxed out at 6kts during my sail) – an acceptable speed for cruising catamarans. It sails up to six knots to windward, which is not impressive but not surprising. Though it hobby horses in medium to high waves, it can be managed by putting the weight in the center of the boat.

It also features Lagoon’s signature vertically-positioned windows that provide maximum space in the cabin while at the same time allowing a lot of light inside.

lagoon 55 catamaran review

That said, it’s not lightweight, which shouldn’t come as a surprise given its bulky construction. Below the waterline, it features solid fiberglass and a mix of balsa wood and foam.

Although the interior looks cozy and spacious, the furniture finish wears pretty quickly because it’s not the highest quality. And like other Lagoon’s older models, the top bimini is soft, which you can replace with a hard one if you can’t take care of it.

All in all, the 380 is good value for money and stands up well to frequent, private cruising. It’s a classic catamaran that delivers more than what it promises.

For a more detailed review of the cat, watch the YouTube video below:

The 400 is another highly successful Lagoon model produced between 2009 and 2017. The 400 S2 was a refresh introduced in 2012.

Like most Lagoon models, the 400 also suffers from being heavy, struggling in lighter airs. It belongs to the company’s third-generation boats that favor comfort over speed and performance.

That said, it’s easy to maneuver and performs well in a breeze. In lighter winds of under ten knots, you can perform well if you fly the larger sails by the bowsprit.

It features a mainsail with a square top that boosts the sail area and makes her tack well. The rig is also easy to handle because all the line sheets come back to the helm with one manual winch.

The deck is clean and clutter-free so that you can get around the boat safely. The flush decks are wide with recessed hashes, and the bow lockers can accommodate all the lines, sails, and fenders.

This model has many different variants on the market in terms of living space. There are three or four cabins with different head configurations, and the refreshed model (the 400 S2) added cupboards aft and made space for a freezer by moving the electrical panel from the galley to the nav station in the saloon.

For a more detailed review of the 400, you can watch the YouTube video below:

The 40 is one of the most reasonably-priced Lagoon cats that combines luxury, comfort, and performance, making it another top seller. Compared to the 400, it’s lighter and has a wider mast. Plus, the company shed 800 kg (1763.7 lb) of its weight compared to its predecessor, the Lagoon 39.

Watch this YouTube video to see more of the Lagoon 39:

Although space isn’t a rarity on lagoon cats, the 40 is the best in its class space-wise. The bigger windows and the more angular look are pretty easy on the eye, with the signature Lagoon look on the inside. However, it has a more streamlined appearance due to its stretched windows.

Its performance is impressive upwind, and the square-top mainsail makes it sail well in a breeze. Still, it needs a bit of wind to get going fast because it doesn’t perform well in light airs.

It’s also easy to handle short-handed because you can handle all the sheets and lines from the helm. However, the saloon’s roof doesn’t have ventilation, making the area down below stuffy.

There are three or four-cabin options with two to four heads, and the other parts of the saloon and galley are standard lagoon layouts with plenty of storage space.

Check out this YouTube video for a detailed review of the Lagoon 40:

Lagoon 450F

The Lagoon 450F (F: Flybridge version) is fourth in line in terms of the units sold. It’s one of the two versions of the 450 series, the other one being 450S. Although it doesn’t boast high performance, it sails well upwind.

Compared to its predecessor, the 440, it’s quite an improvement in terms of luxury and comfort. The flybridge is easily accessible from down below, and it has a new basking lounge.

The elegant, luxurious interior is big enough for up to 12 people to sleep in, with four bathrooms, four to six cabins, and eight to 12 berths.

The 450S, which is not even a performance cat, does surprisingly well in different weather conditions, and the boom is lower than the 450F, increasing performance due to reducing the rig inertia. It also prevents the cat from hobby horsing, leading to faster and more stable rides.

One of this model’s winning features is its semi-raised helm station which doesn’t stand out from the rest of the boat. It gives the cat a pleasing look and makes the helm more easily accessible.

This YouTube video shows a walkthrough of this model:

The Lagoon 55 is Lagoon’s latest model, launched in March 2021 with Lagoon’s characteristic sleek look. Generous living space, an outdoor galley, a forward cockpit, and a roomy flybridge featuring a dining table are the new design’s features.

It also has internal overhead windows that take the sky-watching experience to the next level. It comes with several three to five-cabin layouts, and the internal furniture comes with a walnut wood finish.

Tips for Choosing a Catamaran

Choosing the catamaran that suits your needs can be confusing and overwhelming. After all, you’re putting a considerable amount of money into the purchase, and you want it to be a long-time investment.

Here’s what I consider when looking for a cat, and maybe it will be useful for you as well:

Consider Your Needs, Skills, and Budget

If you’ve chosen a catamaran over a monohull, you know the advantages of the former over the latter. For example, it’s more stable, better for big families, and offers more visibility due to raised helms.

For a deep dive into the differences, I suggest some of my other articles:

  • Cats vs. Monos
  • Are trimarans faster than catamarans?

But, in choosing the right cat, you should dig deeper. The first thing you should consider is your budget, as a tight budget will significantly narrow down your options. Plus, you should consider additional costs for insurance, taxes, marina fees, and maintenance. Unfortunately, this may take some Lagoon models off the table.

How much does it cost to live aboard a catamaran ? real numbers from liveaboards!

Although, you could opt for second-hand, well-maintained cats if you’re short on budget. The best-selling Lagoon models described above are all available in used markets, and you should have no problems reselling them in the future because of their popularity.

If you need the catamaran for short-term getaways, your choice will differ from what you need for long-term living aboard. Are you going to sail around the world or spend most of your time at anchor? These factors determine the type of catamaran in terms of performance, space, and comfort.

Want to see some good examples of offshore capable cats ?

Since Lagoon is known for its spacious interiors and luxurious finishes, it might be worth spending a little more if you’re planning on longer journeys.

If you don’t have great sailing skills (yet), you should opt for a smaller cat setup for solo sailing.

How to learn to sail a cat!

Inspect Everything

Before you buy the boat, inspect every little corner to make sure it’s safe and secure, and pay attention to all structural details such as main and support bulkheads, standing and running rigging, etc.

What are the parts of a catamaran called?

Pro-tip; if you entertain frequently or have a big family, you need to think of both space and privacy.

What about fixed vs. removable furniture? Is it important for you to move everything outside when entertaining? Even round and square furniture can prove to be a nuisance in different situations.

The amount of light, airflow and ventilation, and ceiling height are also important considerations. If you’re tall, you don’t want to be crouching all the time when you’re inside.

When buying new, you should have no issues getting all the little details your need on your Lagoon catamaran. However, if you purchase second-hand, you may need to compromise on certain amenities to account for the lower cost.

How Much Weight Can You Carry?

Boats have certain limitations in terms of the allowed payload, and excess weight will affect your catamaran’s performance . With full water and fuel tanks, there’s a fixed amount of gear you can take on board.

Does the cat offer emergency water or fuel storage on deck? Lightweight cats sometimes have more wiggle room for adding extra gear and provisions.

The galley layout also plays a major role, especially if you travel with your family. Can you live with the current size of the galley, and is there room to add appliances such as a microwave, ice maker, or coffee machine?

Check out this guide to choosing the right design!

Think about where you’ll be preparing food, putting the dishes to dry, or laying out plates to serve. How much space do you need for cooking?

In general, Lagoon cats are known to offer plenty of room inside , and most of the kitchens come with plenty of optional extras to make your time aboard as stress-free as possible.

Do Your Homework

Finally, never jump into buying the first catamaran that catches your eye. Shop around online and offline, considering every little detail. Talk to experts and perform “sea trials” if possible.

Some companies let you try the boat by staying on it for a few days. This way, you’ll get a real feel of what it’s like.

It’s also possible to work with a broker who can help you search for and negotiate when buying new and used catamarans.

I have put together a few buyers guide that could help you on your journey towards a good buy!

  • Catamaran buyers guide
  • How to buy a used catamaran
  • How much does it cost to liveaboard a catamaran?

Final Thoughts

If you’re considering getting a cruising catamaran, Lagoon is one of the brands I would recommend looking into. It’s famous for its luxuriously spacious interiors, sturdy and safe construction, and easily accessible and manageable decks.

Since there are a lot of Lagoons roaming the planet there is also a huge community and help is never far away.

However, the Lagoon models aren’t the best performers, especially in upwind due to their bulkiness. Although you can find them at various prices, they can be too steep for some budgets. If you don’t mind the lower speed, you can find some used ones at reasonable prices.

Lagoon 55 Vs. Bali 5.4

Catamaran comparison, in this article, we compare the all-new lagoon 55 to the existing mega success of the bali 5.4, multihulls have been growing in popularity for the past years, and there is no sign of catamarans stopping their conquest anytime soon.

Major brands known for their monohull production have now a dedicated line for multihulls. In this article, we compare the all-new Lagoon 55 to the already establish Bali 5.4 that has become a sure bet for the investor looking for crewed charter management catamaran.

The popularity of catamarans can be explained by their stability, manoeuvrability and comfortable and spacious living areas. They are  great for chartering .In case you are unfamiliar about the two brands or the catamaran models in question, here’s a brief introduction.

Bali catamarans is part of the Catana Group , which in turn is part of the Fountaine Holding group which one’s majority share is the largest network of yacht charter businesses in the bareboat market (Dream Yacht Charters). In less than 5 years, Bali Catamarans has succeeded in establishing a new style and imposing technical choices in a market which, although expanding and being boosted by fleet replacements (following Hurricane Irma, among others), is one that is highly competitive. The skill of the designer and the mastery of composite construction has allowed for reducing or even eliminating the objections linked to this nacelle architecture (for this type of program), which has facilitated the scale-up of the Bali family to charter and private owners. Catana Group’s Bali range is incredibly dynamic and several evolutions are currently in the pipeline! The launch of the Bali 5.4, however, is a major step forward that will allow the brand to enter the charter fleets at the right time, at the right level, and at an affordable price

Lagoon is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cruising catamarans.  The brand values freedom and lifestyle, resulting in elegant and comfortable yachts. Designed by Nauta Design and Patrick le Quément, The Lagoon 55 represents innovation, freedom, and courage – the fundamentals of the Lagoon brand. Nauta Design followed Lagoon’s brief closely in creating this Interior Design concept. The shipyard’s primary objective was to bring the same level of high-quality lifestyle defined by bright and elegant spaces and a sense of peaceful, harmonious lightness as is found on Lagoon’s larger cats, to this new catamaran. An objective we shared with the builder. Nauta worked closely with Lagoon and with Patrick le Quément to open up vistas and sources of natural light, using horizontal lines to give a sense of continuity with the seascape and the horizon and to free up visual space so that guests can really enjoy the sea, the sky, the sun and the beauty of their surroundings.

The global launch has been held back a bit, but we have been promised to see the first hulls launched and handed over to its new owners in spring 2022.

exterior design features and aspects

lagoon55 exterior5

Lagoon 55   Exterior

The Lagoon 55  has a contemporary design with voluminous hulls.

It is the shipyard’s latest model and stands to replace the Lagoon 560. The Lagoon 55 was officially unveiled in early March 2021 and received a huge amount of interest from dealers and buyers alike, with the order availability now opening up. Bearing the signature Lagoon profile – classic, sleek and timeless – this new sailing catamaran reflects a new concept of onboard living and increased connection to the sea.

This boat has no straight line, no flat surface, all lines are stretched, all surfaces are compound. This is done to express strength and quality. Nothing has been left to chance, it is is a boat totally designed in every detail.

The design includes generous spaces allowing guests to find their own private relaxed area in the many different spots onboard. Her multi-function transoms are not just for moving around the boat but also serve as a living space when at anchor, either for cooking outdoors or for direct access to the sea.

A highlight is the transom, which has been designed to be an on-water terrace, equipped with an outdoor galley, that is perfect for socializing. The new concept of access on board and circulation offers a new sensation. The aft skirts are no longer just a space for movement, but a real living space at anchor, for cooking outdoors or simply dreaming at the water’s edge.

The Lagoon 55 provides first-class comfort with a large forward cockpit ideal for sunset aperitifs and a huge flybridge with a dining table, extensive sun pads, and a wet bar.

Docked Bali 5.4 from behind

Bali 5.4   Exterior

The Bali 5.4 is all about lounging space. The decks seem to go on forever, with cushioned surfaces everywhere. Up to 12 vacationers can take in the views on the foredeck, the afterdeck or atop the flybridge. Contrary to the trend of the majority of catamarans of this size, the Bali 5.4 doesn’t offer the traditional cockpit with table, bench seating and lounger, but completely redraws this aft space by merging it with the convertible saloon/gallery (open to the outside with the tilting bay window and side panels). This “revolution” goes against the “cockpit lounge” option chosen by their French or South African competitors by replacing it with a nacelle space and by adding a new living space forward.

With the exception of the comfortable bench seat athwartships, the stern of the boat is more dedicated to the role of an exchange area between inside and outside and for access to the sugarscoops or gangway (when the tender is in the water). The design for moving around the boat unveils new possibilities and allows you to reach the huge forward cockpit directly through a forward door: an unparalleled solution, conquering the usual trampoline, to offer a friendly relaxation/sunbathing/brunch/happy-hour space worthy of a model 10 feet longer!

Considering the extreme optimization and innovative organization of the space on board the 5.4, the flybridge was essential for clearing the technical hardware from the deck and offering a fitting helm station that also serves as a desirable marine terrace (accessible from both sides). The deck layout is simple and efficient with a readable and direct distribution of sail handling maneuvers: the 2 electric winches are obviously essential

interior design features

lagoon55 interior4

Lagoon 55   Interior

The Lagoon 55 has a 360-degree loft-style saloon connected to the cockpit.

As in all of Lagoon’s collaborations, Nauta Design worked jointly with Lagoon to design the interior design of the Lagoon 55. The main objective of the project was to create a high quality of life on board: bright and elegant spaces, as well as a serene and harmonious atmosphere, directly inspired by Lagoon yachts. Nauta design worked  with Patrick le Quément, to offer new perspectives, and to open the interior to natural light sources using horizontal lines, in order to enjoy continuity with the seascape and the horizon. The visual field is freed so that the guests can enjoy the sea, the sky, the sun, and the beauty of the surroundings.

Another stunning feature is the internal overhead windows, which provide a breath-taking vista of star-studded skies. Large windows and two spectacular skylights in the saloon are key features of this new model that further enhance what Lagoon catamarans are famous for spaciousness, comfort, stability, modern design, and plenty of practical solutions on board. There are several layouts available with 3-5 cabin layouts depending on the yacht’s usage. The interiors by Nauta Design  are bathed in an abundance of natural light with a soothing walnut wood finish.

The galley of the Bali 5.4 with elegant design on everything from the windows, sink and stove, to the practical built-in bottle holders

Bali 5.4   Interior

The designers have done an exceptional job of providing for this multitude of guests in only 54ft. Each cabin has a full double berth and ensuite head. The layout plan provides direct access from the outside to the two aft cabins (extra freedom for late nights or early risers!). The other 4 cabins (all equipped with private bathroom and toilet facilities!) are accessible by 2 lateral companionways, on either side of the chart table (which will be better integrated into the hulls on future units to facilitate forward passage) and from the galley.

The individual volumes of our 6 cabin version are only slightly smaller than those of some traditional owner’s versions and meet the primary expectations of the typical client couple: privacy and comfort. A real achievement on a boat of this size! The clean style is effective without being impersonal: the upholstery and the combination of materials create a pleasant and functional atmosphere that lends itself well to personalization through simple decorative contributions and the woodwork is of a high standard.

The two crew cabins are comfortable and practical, and their individual access via deck hatches is coupled with the possibility of entering in bad weather via an internal watertight door: very well thought out!

“Our idea was to design a boat offering an unequalled view of the splendor of the sea, giving all our attention to anticipating the circulation on board, offering generous space, and allowing those on board to find their very own preferred spot.

We wanted to draw a beautiful boat that would be immediately identifiable, as being a Lagoon.”
