Baltic 67 review: Finnish superyacht yard goes back to its roots with no-compromise cruiser

  • Toby Hodges
  • March 28, 2019

When a renowned superyacht yard builds a 67-footer for short-handed cruising you can be sure the result will be something special

Baltic 67 hull number one Manyeleti

Were money no object and you wanted the ultimate yacht for long-term cruising, what would you choose? How large could you go without needing a paid crew? What do you really need length and space for and how important is displacement and potential speed to you?

These were the sort of questions crowding into my head on first viewing the sensational new Baltic 67 at the Cannes Yachting Festival . It is truly striking. The quality of the yacht is undeniably world class, but it’s the precision of design and engineering that soon absorbs you.

The owner of this first boat is a highly experienced cruising sailor, boat owner and navigator, so joining him for a 24-hour trial from Mallorca proved the ideal way to get under the gleaming composite skin of this athletic new model.

The concept is about combining the pleasure of pure sailing with ease of handling for long-distance cruising at high average speeds. It is the alternative to a full custom yacht – all the engineering is already calculated – but a great deal of flexibility has been worked into the design, with options including single or twin rudders, a fixed or telescopic keel, multiple cabin layouts, and a carbon or epoxy sandwich hull.

Wanting to return to its mid-size fast cruiser roots, Baltic Yachts teamed up with designers and fellow in-demand superyacht specialists Judel Vrolijk and Design Unlimited. The result is this exceedingly attractive, modern-looking sloop, with a powerful hull shape, a flush foredeck and a low-profile coachroof.

Baltic 67 under sail

Powered sail handling systems means Manyeleti can be sailed by just two

The Baltic 67 is very much at the luxury and custom end of the production yacht scale, so our light wind trial of the boat focused more on the various choices and details aboard and how they might be relevant to sailors in general. Hull number one in particular had a lot of owner input.

Manyeleti , the first 67, belongs to Erik Lindgren. It is his fifth yacht from Baltic after a string of upgrades that started with a used 39 in 1989. “It’s very different to design and build your own boat – in my case using nearly 30 years of offshore sailing experience,” Lindgren explains.

Swede Lindgren travelled to the yard once a month and was in daily contact with the project manager, Kjell Vesto.

The Lindgrens’ plan is to head off on another world cruise in a couple of years time, when Erik’s teenage children have finished school. His shakedown sail involved a 5,000-mile trip from Finland to and around the Mediterranean.

“Not a single thing broke,” he reports, saluting Baltic’s build quality. “I could literally go to El Corte Inglés, stock up, fuel up and sail across the Atlantic.”

The Baltic 67 is as big as you can go without needing a pro crew, argues Erik Lindgren.  “I’ve spent a lot of time on World ARC boats… it’s the details that make living on board easier. This is a technical boat, but is less dependent on systems than our old Baltic 56. On the other hand it’s great to have aircon and a lifting keel.

“Half the time spent aboard will be for long distance stuff and holidays for the two of us, but a lot of the time will be spent with friends and family too.”

Privacy at this size is a big benefit. “I have no need to have a big boat for show,” says Lindgren, “but I wanted to have the things I need.”

Baltic 67 bow

The retractable arm for the anchor roller is an engineering masterpiece. It rises from the anchor locker at the touch of a button

The most important features he wanted, which help explain the jump in size from his previous 56, were a furling boom, a large, practical galley, four cabins and a tender garage large enough to house a forward-facing dinghy. While his yachts have grown and become more complex, Lindgren maintains that the methodical way Baltic builds boats results in a lot fewer problems.

A carbon furling boom is an eye-watering investment, but it does make the hoisting, reefing and lowering of sails a quick and largely hassle-free procedure. It can make the difference to whether you go sailing or not. Within minutes of leaving Palma’s breakwaters, we had main and jib unfurled and were matching the 8 knot wind speeds.

Easy performance

The Hall carbon boom uses an electric mandrel motor that is synchronised with the halyard to avoid too much sail spilling out during a hoist. The traveller is also electric, while the sheet car pullers, backstay, vang and furlers are hydraulically-operated. The result is the ease of push-button sailing typically used on modern performance superyachts.

We spent the first few hours reaching across Palma Bay. Despite having 24 hours aboard, the most breeze we found was 11 knots, which translated to 9.5 knots boatspeed – very respectable under white sails only (fully battened main and non-overlapping jib). The majority of the time was spent close-hauled, matching the single-figure wind, even exceeding it when it dropped below 6 knots.

Baltic 67 jib car puller

Neat details: the forward end of the jib car puller, which is hydraulically powered

I found myself gravitating to the side deck to sit and steer, instinctively wanting to sail the Baltic 67 like a cruiser-racer. There are good views over the low coachroof and flush foredeck, but nothing except freeboard height to prevent a wet backside if the decks ship green water.

The helmsman can also sit forward of the wheel and reach the two winches. I like the way the primary is mounted inboard, though the positioning of the turning block for the jib sheet creates an obstacle on the side deck. Baltic reasons that it helps provide the option to use either winch for the sheet.

Speed for oceans

A flying sail would have helped to get the most out of the conditions, but Lindgren was still awaiting delivery of a Code 0 and A3, both on top-down furlers. However, even when the evening breeze died to around 4-5 knots, the Baltic 67 still provided an enjoyable experience on the helm. It’s rare that you can say such a thing while only using main and jib.

The 67 is designed for potent offwind performance, to limit engine use on transocean voyages. The aggressive sail area to displacement ratio of 30.9 is possibly taking things too far: the boat has so much power to weight that it will need to be treated as a real performance cruiser and tamed accordingly (i.e. reefed early). But what our trial sail did show was how well the Baltic 67 fulfils its brief of being able to offer enjoyable sailing in light wind.

“Bluewater boats don’t usually sail in 10-15 knots downwind – and we had a lot of that,” Lindgren points out, with reference to their previous Pacific crossing. “At 150º true, this boat is sailing at 8-9 knots, which is a big difference. As long as you are over 8 knots you are properly moving through the water,” he reasons. “Below that you’re in the swell and not in control.”

Baltic 67 helm position

The twin pedestals are well designed to site plotter screens and remote controls for powered deck functions and sail handling

With the relatively low coachroof and cockpit backrests and aft positioning of the helms, protection from the elements may be a concern. When you look at Baltic’s large new designs in build, the 142 and 146, both have lengthy deckhouses that provide plenty of protection. But it chose the more in-vogue deck design for this semi-custom size, so its solutions for cockpit protection depend largely on a retractable sprayhood and bimini. These can remain in place while sailing and have already been tested in up to 40 knots.

The cockpit area on this first Baltic 67 has been adapted according to the owners’ wishes, including a narrower space between benches and no fixed table. The Lindgrens like to be able to brace feet between benches and to be able to sleep on the sole between them when offshore. The table and carbon legs stow beneath the central saloon soleboards.

We anchored at dusk at Es Trenc beach, 25 miles to the south-east of Palma, in water so clear we could pick the spot to drop the hook between weed patches. The ability to anchor in less than 4m amply demonstrated the appeal of a lifting keel. The keel system, from the highly reputable Italian brand APM, raises the T-keel hydraulically up to 2.5m.

The anchor arrangement is another fine piece of engineering: the arm is concealed in a shallow locker and rotates over and into place at the push of a button. The roller then extends out to keep it clear of the stem. The second Baltic 67 will have a fixed roller incorporated into the bowsprit.

Open transom choice

The garage houses a 3.2m dinghy stowed longitudinally, with the engine mounted, between the dual rudders. Lindgren chose an AB tender with aluminium hull (53kg). It has a 20hp outboard so can plane with four adults yet is light enough to be dragged up the beach. He also opted for an open transom that, although an unconventional choice for ocean cruising, gives easy access to the swim platform and dinghy.

There is copious stowage space throughout the Baltic 67. In addition to the tall sail locker in the forepeak, the aft quarter lockers easily swallow electric bikes, inflatable paddleboards, snorkel gear, waterskis, spare fuel and a liferaft valise. Here there’s also access to the steering gear with independent autopilots used on both quadrants.

I particularly like the way multiple Antal T-lock fittings are flush-mounted along the toerail and in the cockpit. These enable quick and easy swivelling toggles to be inserted for loops and blocks, or for harness attachments.

Weight versus noise

The following morning was windless, leaving us with a three-hour motor back to Palma. The 150hp six-cylinder Steyr was specified for its low noise and emissions, and drives a four-blade Bruntons prop via a standard shaft.

E-glass was chosen over the standard carbon hull. Lindgren’s previous Baltic 56 was carbon and he wanted the better noise insulation over the weight difference (up to one tonne). The 67 is a very quiet, relaxing boat under motor, with no need to raise voices under power.

Baltic 67 interior

The spacious saloon has enough room for both dining and coffee tables

Down below the Baltic is an aircon-cooled haven of charm and exquisite quality. The more time I spent aboard and the more I learned of the systems and engineering, the more I began to appreciate what sets this boat apart.

The Design Unlimited styling is elegant and tasteful, with a mahogany finish on this first boat. With four different layout configurations plenty of scope is allowed for owner customisation. But behind the scenes is what you really pay for with the Baltic. It’s the telling result of what happens when a yard goes down in model size – this 67 is built like a superyacht.

For example, the engine room, used for hot items like engine, genset and water-heater, links through to a proper mechanical/utility room abaft the galley, where equipment is mounted on three walls for easy access (including chargers, inverters, pumps, watermaker and compressors).

“The thinking is that everything should be in reach and that you should be able to maintain it easily,” says Lindgren, pointing to the Spectra watermaker (his fourth) mounted on one bulkhead.

Baltic 67 technical spaces

The boat’s systems are beautifully laid out for ease of inspection and maintenance

Stowage throughout has been brilliantly conceived. The 2,000lt of water and diesel tanks, plus the batteries, are all mounted centrally, under the saloon, leaving cavernous practical stowage under the berths. Custom-made fabric bags are used under the saloon seats to maximise useable volume.

Lifting the carbon sandwich soleboards at the base of the companionway reveals the sea chests and main manifolds for fuel and water, a prime example of the meticulous and practical systems layout. The 1,440Ah of lithium gel batteries further forward have a reservoir surrounding them, which can cool the cells if necessary without flooding them. And there are custom-made drip trays below any filters to prevent mess or corrosion.

The keel uses a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) to activate the hydraulics, the cylinders for which can be replaced from within the boat. All other electrics are on manual relays. The fuse locker is a work of art and opens out for full access to the wiring, with every wire and fuse numbered and labelled.

Smart cabin choice

Manyeleti ’s owner’s cabin, with adjoining heads and shower in the forwardmost section, has an offset double berth positioned aft by the main bulkhead, a relatively central area of the boat to sleep. However, on passage, Lindgren says he sleeps on deck, or in the single cabin amidships. There are also leecloths on the saloon berths, a comfortable option if guests don’t want to share the twins.

Baltic 67 cabins

The owner’s cabin is (purposefully) the only one aboard Manyeleti to feature a double bed

There is a good reason why there is only one double bed. Lindgren often sails with male friends, hence twin and single berths are a pragmatic choice. The use of a split heads and shower shared between the twin and single cabins is also sensible.

The central section of the interior is superb, with a traditional lower saloon, a navstation beside the companionway and a formidable U-shaped galley. It was important to the Lindgrens that the galley was large enough for two to work in yet still be seamanlike. The result is a very practical area with superb chilled, dried goods and crockery stowage. Ventilation ducts keep it nice and cool, though personally I’d want to have a hatch through to the cockpit.

Lindgren swears by the dishwasher, reasoning that it uses less water than washing up and helps keep the galley tidy. This and an induction cooker would be sensible options if you had sufficient power, and would avoid the need for gas.

The exemplary finish and smaller details help furnish the boat with a top quality feel. From the hinges, light switches and showerheads to the gas sprung hatches and overall joiner work, the Baltic 67 oozes quality.

The Baltic 67 has been designed with short-handed sailing in mind

Baltic 67: the verdict

Baltic has spent the last decade building some of the finest performance superyachts. You don’t receive commissions for yachts such as Hetairos , Pink Gin VI , or My Song without a top reputation, and to get that sort of quality on a 67-footer is truly special. Attention to detail and class of engineering and finish are hallmarks of this new model.

The Baltic 67 has the performance in light airs to match her on-trend looks and is a joy to helm. The choice of a comparatively unprotected cockpit and an open transom may not sit well with conventional bluewater sailors, but times are changing and this design is aimed as much at port-hopping from Portofino as at Pacific passagemaking . It is the solutions, stowage and systems employed throughout that help make it a valid option for distance cruising.

The Baltic 67 has the legs to outrun virtually any other cruising monohull and to keep sailing fast in light apparent winds. To know you’re buying the best in terms of design and composite build – and created by the same team involved in a yacht that costs tens of millions – must help compensate for the significant initial outlay. For the rest of us, we can but dream.

The new Baltic 67 PC (standing for performance cruiser) from Baltic Yachts carries a future-retro look, with its plumb bow, long bowsprit, and curved, aerodynamic enclosure over the interior. The sailing yacht was designed to be fast but easy to handle, so families can cruise aboard. The Finnish yacht builder used carbon-fiber hull construction to save on weight, which means the yacht requires lower rig loads for faster speeds. Baltic says the boat is nearly 8,800 pounds lighter than production sailing yachts of the same size. The 67 PC has four staterooms and a large saloon, which enjoy plenty of natural light from the center skylight and windows. Its rear garage accommodates a 14-foot tender.

Cutting edge design combined with fast, easy sailing and high-performance capability makes Baltic 67 an attractive long-distance cruising yacht that’s perfect for competitive events. Carbon fiber engineering and sandwich construction give the yacht a relatively light structure that can be handled by a limited crew. Light and responsive with dual steering wheels, access to essential equipment like the powered trimming winches has been thoughtfully considered and are within easy reach. A telescopic lifting keel provides shallow water access, while a long-running beam and foam cores give Baltic 67 a well-balanced, light structure with a stable feel.

Baltic 67 Performance Cruiser Yacht review

Construction of the vessel is based on a standard hull but offers extensive customization options for deck and interior design. Selections like single line slab or in-boom reefing are the owner’s choice and are complemented by a non-overlapping working jib and bow thruster. With moderate consumption while on auto-pilot and good directional stability, Baltic 67’s performance capabilities will provide a leading-edge for competitive sailors.

Precision engineering and carbon construction techniques honed from Baltic’s 44 years of yacht building experience have created a vessel that provides not only performance advantages but has stunning attention to detail. Deck options feature open or closed transoms and a selection of layouts to maximize deck space or create comfortable seating areas. Hatches, windows, and storage lockers can be placed in versatile arrangements to suit. Swing out, or permanent anchor stowage may be selected along with an optional integral bowsprit.

Baltic 67 Performance Cruiser Interior Design

Interior design can be styled traditionally and comfortably or for a more streamlined and modern appearance. Floor plans can be based around a versatile 3 or 4 cabin layout. The 4 cabin design features a master cabin forward with twin and single cabins each side of the keel casing. For the 4 cabin layout, an additional twin cabin is positioned to the starboard aft with shower facilities. For those who prefer a 3 cabin layout, this version removes the keel side single cabin, allowing larger head and shower areas to both the master and twin cabin. Each design features an ample seating area in the main saloon and a linear galley to the rear portside.

Personalization of Baltic 67’s interior can be developed with a wide range of woods, finishes, and fabrics to suit the owner’s taste. Sophistication and elegance can be achieved with a palette of tasteful color options that may be combined to create contemporary urban or soft traditional characteristics. For the more traditional seaman, rounded edges and fiddled worktops can be utilized for a more practical yet updated look. The more modern styling choice resembles a city apartment with harder lines, recessed features, and suspended lighting. Ample passage berths and safety features like recessed stowage allows for safe movement below deck while sailing in any conditions or during long-distance cruising.

Interior design of the Baltic 67 Performance Cruiser

The saloon offers ample seating and dining space in an open plan arrangement that can be designed depending on the interior layout. Seating spaces vary slightly, but both feature U-shaped settee areas with additional seating opposite. Both designs wrap around a large dining table. One layout option features a forward-facing dedicated chart table, while the other favors more space dedicated to seating and includes a centerline bench to the far side of the dining table for additional places. Views of the ocean can be seen from the long side windows, and overhead hatches create a light and airy aspect to the saloon.

Cabins are bright and comfortable with the generously proportioned owner’s suite featuring a desk/vanity unit and a relaxed seating space from a starboard side settee. Natural light pours in from the windows running along both the port and starboard sides of the cabin. The en-suite head and shower are also on the starboard side and features a glass shower stall and mirrored overhead units along with heated towel rail. Guest cabins are single and twin, with 2 or 3 cabins available depending on the chosen floor plan. Twin berths have easy access to en-suite head and shower facilities, and all rooms have ample wardrobe space available.

Baltic 67 Is Stylish Performance Cruiser

baltic yachts 67 price

The continued interest in the Baltic 67 PC has resulted in a new commission for a yacht which features a distinctive hardtop bimini and remote control for single-handed sailing

Baltic Yachts announced the sale of the third Baltic 67 PC, confirming continued interest in a versatile yacht designed for fast, efficient, long distance sailing. The latest order for this stylish performance cruiser is another illustration of how varied a specification is possible in a yacht based on the same hull mould using Baltic’s expertise.

Baltic 67 PC was conceived as a robust, fast, easy to handle long distance cruising yacht able to perform well in light to medium airs downwind sailing conditions and maintain high daily mileage averages without recourse to the engine.

Included in the brief is a requirement to keep the cockpit area well protected and to this end a hard-top bimini has been specified. The distinctive, advanced composite structure extends aft to a load-bearing arch upon which the push-button electro-hydraulic mainsheet car is mounted, keeping the mainsheet safely out of the cockpit.

The hardtop features a large sliding, tinted skylight and provides a mount for solar panels adding to an array on the coachroof. A stylish soft awning can be fitted to the aft end of the hardtop, extending to the twin fixed backstays to provide further protection for the twin helm stations. With its extensive protection, the cockpit almost doubles as a deck saloon, well equipped as it is with comfortable seating and a large dining table.

With a considerable electrical demand to drive the yacht’s press-button operations a comprehensive battery charging system has been specified. Although the main propulsion unit for the yacht is a conventional diesel engine, it is linked via a clutch to a large 40kW alternator which not only charges a bank of 10 lithium-ion batteries, but can also be used to drive the propeller as an alternative to the main engine. Battery charging is also available via hydrogeneration using the free-wheeling propeller when sailing.

The extensive array of solar panels will provide sufficient power to run the yacht’s fridge and freezer units and an additional generator will be installed to charge the 48-volt electrical system, an advantage of which is considerable weight saving through the use of smaller guage cabling.

Another notable feature of this project has been the use of virtual reality for development meetings. The owner has been involved in the ergonomics of deck layout and interior design by using virtual reality headsets enabling him to ‘walk’ through the yacht with the Baltic Yachts’ team to discuss design and detail.

Customize this beauty to make a personal dream yacht

baltic yachts 67 price

Baltic started out as the counterpoint to Nautor’s Swan line. But to my young eye the early Baltics were more exciting boats, more daring in design than the sedate, but beautiful Swans. Today, Baltic produces large custom and semi-custom boats. Semi-custom is a boat that uses a stock hull, out of a mold, usually along with a stock deck, but not always. The rig may be stock or not. This means that the interior layouts sent to me are just ideas of what can be done. The final interior layout will be left to the client’s whims and requirements. “You have eight Basset hounds?”

Unfortunately, I have nothing in my presentation package that shows the underbody of this yacht. But I think we can imagine based on prior work from the Judel/Vrolijk office. The D/L is 89.72 so this is a light boat. The draft is listed at just under 13 feet with a fixed keel, but I suspect Baltic would be open to draft changes. You could maybe even go with a lifting keel. Looking at the large garage aft with a stowed dinghy I’d say there will be twin rudders. That way the rudder stocks will bypass the dinghy stowage area. The L/B is 3.76.

Baltic shows four different interior layouts. There are variations on how you want your stateroom arranged: stacked singles versus double berths and one layout has a “sitting room.” Three of the layouts feature an off-center double forward in the owner’s cabin. Layout “A” features a centerline double berth forward. I think a centerline double has advantages over “off-to-the-side” type double, so I will focus my comments on layout “A.”

The galley is aft and to port. Needless to say, it’s a big galley. On the starboard side aft is the crew’s stateroom.

Up a couple of steps to the saloon and you have a big U-shaped dinette to port and a smaller L-shaped settee to starboard. Aft of the settee is the nav station. Stepping down as you go forward you have a twin single-berth stateroom to port and a single-berth stateroom to starboard. These staterooms share a head and shower to starboard. Forward of this is the owner’s cabin with a centerline double berth and large head with shower. I think as long as you retain the changes in cabin sole height you can change this layout any way you like, within reason. Baltic may want you to stay within the established bulkhead locations for structural reasons.

baltic yachts 67 price

The SA/D is 29.22 and that’s a lot of horsepower per pound for a cruising boat this size. I suspect that you would have every mechanical and hydraulic sailing assist known to man so sail handling won’t be that taxing. The jib leads are on athwartships tracks adjacent to the mast and outboard aft. Lines from the base of the mast run aft under the deck to exit on the coamings just forward of the wheels in the cockpit for a sleek, clean deck with easy access to lines for the helmsman. The mainsheet traveler is forward of the twin wheels. I have no details on the garage aft, but I’m sure it’s huge and the door opens up to become a broad swim platform. That’s pretty typical these days. I see an indication of running backstays and a forward babystay from the upper spreader. Maybe this is for a storm sail combination. But if you are not up for sailing you can cruise under power with a 150-horsepower Volvo.

Obviously this is the ultimate boat. Now Baltic needs to find some ultimate owners.

LOA 67’6”; LWL 62’10”; Beam 17’10”; Draft 12’10”; Displ. 52,690 lbs.; Sail area 2,745 sq. ft.; Auxiliary Volvo D3 150-hp.; SA/D 29.22; D/L 89.72; L/B 3.76; Fuel capacity 238 gal.; Water capacity 264 gal.

Baltic Yachts is a world-leading yacht builder that's built on a strong heritage of design and engineering excellence. The company was founded in 1973 by a team of experienced yachtsmen and craftsmen who sought to create a range of high-performance, custom-made yachts that blended innovative technology with traditional craftsmanship. Since its inception, the Finland-based company has consistently pushed the boundaries of yacht design and construction, establishing itself as a market leader in the luxury yacht sector.

The shipyard is renowned for its advanced facilities and skilled workforce, excelling in carbon fibre technology to deliver some of the world's most advanced yachts. Baltic 67PC Freedom

The baltic 67pc is a semi-custom sailing yacht with a fixed hull design and a custom interior..

After its delivery last year and a recent trial sailing in Palma de Mallorca, Baltic 67PC Freedom has rigorously tested its iPhone app and handheld remote-control systems. These tests have demonstrated that these systems are valuable for facilitating easy, fast, and shorthanded sailing.

Freedom is the third Baltic 67PC to be launched and showcases the extent of customization possible in a yacht built from the same hull mold. While all three 67s share identical hull designs by judel/vrolijk, each yacht has a unique interior layout. In the case of Freedom, its distinctive Targa-style protective hardtop, featuring extensive glazing, a large sliding hatch, solar panels, and a safety-focused mainsheet track, has genuinely elevated the deck design of the 67 to a new level.

Baltic 67 Sailing Yacht Freedom

Baltic 67PC Freedom is made for shorthanded sail cruises.

The owner of Freedom desired a yacht that would allow him to sail effortlessly on his own or with his partner. He carefully selected the yacht’s name to symbolize the enduring Freedom that sailing offers in a world increasingly burdened by limitations.

His primary criteria included exceptional sailing performance and the capability to manage the sail plan and other tasks through advanced press-button electro-hydraulic and remote-control systems. As an example, he can effortlessly maneuver the 3m tender in and out of its stern garage storage solely by utilizing his phone. In a broader sense, he aimed to use his iPhone app to monitor Freedom and enjoy heightened remote surveillance, providing him tranquility.

Lars Gripenberg, the project manager responsible for overseeing the construction of this groundbreaking yacht for Baltic over two years in Jakobstad, has expressed that the system has achieved remarkable success with just a few minor enhancements to the owner’s iPhone application. This innovative system enables the owner to utilize a CZone control system integrated with Sentinel surveillance, granting access to comprehensive electronic monitoring capabilities throughout the entire yacht, including four strategically positioned cameras.

The project manager comments: “With a little fine-tuning the app is working well so that the owner can check on anything from the wind speed and camera surveillance to tank levels and battery state – in a way it’s guardianage by iPhone!”

baltic yachts 67 price

An iPhone can control the stern garage and passerelle.

As the owner approaches the vessel named Freedom on his electrically-powered tender, he can use his iPhone to open the stern garage, allowing the boarding platform to be deployed upon his arrival. Additionally, he can operate the stern pasarelle, which includes an electric crane designed to lift the tender onto the boarding platform and then slide it into its stern garage storage, all through his phone.

The tender, the 3.00m Zero-Jet produced in New Zealand, showcases remarkable innovation. It utilizes a powerful waterjet propulsion system that is electrically powered. Capable of reaching speeds of at least 25 knots, the boat’s 80kg battery pack provides approximately three hours of use at high speeds and even more when operating at lower speeds.

To control the forceful water flow from the jet, a “bucket” is employed. The designers have ingeniously developed a tiller steering system that overcomes the inherent challenges of some water jet propulsion units, ensuring smoother handling.

The electric tender offers several advantages. It eliminates the need for fuel storage or special ventilation on board the Freedom. When the Zero-Jet is retrieved, it can be connected to the yacht’s extensive electrical system for recharging. Its emission-free nature is an appealing selling point, and the absence of an exposed propeller enhances safety and enables operation in extremely shallow waters.

Baltic 67 Sailing Yacht Freedom

The handheld radio remote controllers are utilized for various tasks onboard, such as unfurling and furling the in-boom mainsail, controlling the hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system, and deploying and weighing the anchor. A Dockmate joystick is employed for close-quarters maneuvering, utilizing the yacht’s 50kW Molabo electric motor. This eliminates the need to rely on an internal combustion engine while in marinas or alongside.

Freedom’s authentic diesel/electric hybrid powertrain consists of a Volvo D3 150hp main engine and the Molabo unit, which drives a controllable pitch propeller. Lars Gripenberg explained that the diesel engine serves as the primary means of propulsion for the yacht; however, in scenarios where reduced emissions and noise levels are preferred, such as marina work, the electric motor can be selected. When cruising at normal speeds of nearly seven knots, the electric option provides a range of approximately three to four hours, depending on the prevailing conditions. Freedom is equipped with two sets of Mastervolt lithium-ion batteries.

Baltic 67 Sailing Yacht Freedom

Considering the impressive control systems and hardtop of Freedom, they would be even more astounded by what lies below. The covered cockpit seamlessly leads into the yacht’s stunning and unusually spacious interior. Design Unlimited, the same team responsible for the remarkable hardtop, has made excellent use of the saved space by providing only three sleeping cabins: a large owner’s double suite forward and two cabins aft. In between, the layout is open plan, with the saloon, large galley, and navigation-cum-office merging into one.

The contemporary styling is enhanced by abundant natural light, thanks to deckhead skylights and two large hull-side ports. The result is a spectacularly modern and airy atmosphere.

Baltic 67 Sailing Yacht Freedom Interior

The amount of space available is quite remarkable. This is partly achieved by positioning the main bulkhead, which separates the main living area from the forward sleeping quarters, further forward than in the previous 67s. Besides being equipped with a lifting keel, Freedom’s telescopic design minimizes any intrusion into the accommodation.

The designers have chosen light oak bulkhead panels, contrasting natural oak sole boards, leather-finished grab handles, contemporary lighting, and clear-coated carbon elements of the yacht’s internal structure to create an incredibly stylish and functional living space.

Baltic 67 Is the Almost Perfect Performance Long Distance Cruiser

September 1, 2019 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

The 20 meters LOA Baltic 67 is the highly customizable sloop easy to handle by only two people. It is fast, good looking, and very easy to sail, as I already mentioned. I don’t know if I’m not gonna repeat myself again about this perfect attribute. High-quality materials, luxurious style, and exquisite engineering skills were used by the experienced Baltic Yachts builders. They used a sandwich construction with carbon Epoxy Sprint, which gave the Baltic 67 a very light structure allowing her to sail faster downwind.

Baltic 67 Exterior

Baltic 67 Exterior

It is perfect for competitive sailing, perfect for the ocean crossing, extremely comfortable, offering a genuine performance edge. Builders claim that it can participate in regattas without having to convert to race mode.

Spacious Saloon on Baltic 67

Spacious Saloon on Baltic 67

The main distinguishing attributes are powered trimming winches within the helmsman’s easy reach, a non-overlapping working jib, a well-balanced helm, good directional stability. As all the Baltic Yachts models, she has a bow thruster and twin steering wheels, but one finds more often these two qualities.

Carbon fiber and the very light foam assure the low weight, the best insulation, and the easiest maintenance. Baltic 67 benefits of a telescopic lifting keel which guarantees access to much shallower anchorages.

Many people consider this model much to dear for the luxury level it offers. It is indeed an expensive toy with which you can’t charge the $100k per week to offer blue cruises to celebrities. The pleasure you may derive from it is the knowledge that you could afford it. With this kind of money, you can buy a hotel in a prime location and make even more money. But this is not the point. Knowing that you’re buying the best in terms of design and build, created by the same team involved in yachts that costs tens of millions, must help to compensate.
