Yacht Club Monaco
Founded in 1953 by Prince Rainier and presided over by HSH Prince Sovereign Albert II since 1984, the Yacht Club de Monaco brings together more than 2.500 members from 80 nationalities. Inauguration of the new YCM building
At 43°44’15’’ N and 7°25’40’’ E, this hi-tech building which looks like a liner docked on Quai Louis II is home to two of the Principality’s historic clubs: the Société Nautique (rowing club) and the Yacht Club, a meeting point for owners and focus of international yachting activities. Yacht Club de Monaco marks 70 years with Prince Albert II’s leadership
Friday, December 22, 2023 Favorite
In 2023, Yacht Club de Monaco celebrated 70 years with awards and sustainable yachting focus, led by Prince Albert II and featuring global sailing achievements.
In a grand celebration of the momentous year 2023 and the 70th anniversary of the Yacht Club de Monaco, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II, the club’s esteemed president, honored its members at the traditional winter gathering. This event was not just about recognizing the club’s esteemed ambassadors but also a time for welcoming new faces and unveiling the plans for the upcoming season. Prince Albert II expressed, “These festivities mark a commemoration of seventy years filled with memorable sailing experiences and remarkable encounters.”
The Prince went on to emphasize, “Yachting isn’t just a sport; it embodies the spirit of athletic excellence and values that I hold dear.” This year, the club’s accolades included a gold in the Small States Games in the ILCA 4 division, world championship triumphs in various categories like Finn, RC44, Swan50, and 5.5, and a prestigious win at the Voiles de Saint-Tropez with the club’s pride, Tuiga. The upcoming year, 2024, is set to be sports-centric with events like the Olympic Games potentially featuring a club sailor, the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona with club members participating, and the Vendée Globe. Pierre Casiraghi, vice-president of the Y.C.M. and founder of the Malizia team, along with skipper Boris Herrmann, will rejoin the global race with their IMOCA Malizia-Seaexplorer. Casiraghi shared, “We’re striving to accumulate as much sea experience as possible before the race start, to thoroughly understand our IMOCA.”
The evening’s pinnacle was the presentation of the Ubs YCM Sailor of the Year 2023 trophy, awarded to Nico Poons, RC44 world champion. Poons expressed immense pride in receiving this recognition, noting the heightened competition and his successful season, including winning the ‘Worlds’ and the overall season. The nominees were a distinguished group of YCM members and expert sailors like Edward Wright, Leonardo Ferragamo, Benoît de Froidmont, Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio, Vladimir Prosikhin, Graeme Peterson, and Joost Schuijff. Bernard d’Alessandri, the club’s Secretary-General, reflected, “2023 was a landmark year for us, showcasing our members’ passion with five world championships.”
The ceremony also spotlighted the youth, awarding Noah Garcia for his remarkable season, including a gold in the Small States Games in ILCA 4 and a notable position in the French ILCA 6 championship.
Sustainable yachting was another key theme. Echoing Peter Drucker, Prince Albert II highlighted the necessity of shaping a sustainable future, citing initiatives like the SEA Index, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, and the YCM Explorers Awards. He commended these efforts and encouraged further research in sustainable yachting.
The event also revisited the commitment of shipowners to environmental stewardship, exemplified by Mike Horn’s four-year global expedition named ‘Whats’Left’, with a YCM delegation joining him briefly in Greenland aboard Pangea.
Prince Albert II emphasized the club’s role in pioneering sustainable practices in recreational boating. As 2024 marks a decade since the inauguration of the new Club House, designed by Lord Foster, the Yacht Club de Monaco continues to actively contribute to Monaco’s environmental policies. The club collaborates with key industry figures through its think tank to foster international initiatives, reinforcing Monaco’s position as a leader in advanced yachting.

YACHT CLUB DE MONACO
The latest project by Foster & Partners is their stunning Yacht Club situated in the wonderful city of Monte Carlo, the capital of the Principality of Monaco. With a size of 26,550 square metres, the club is not only spacious but beautiful and, as with all of Foster & Partners designs, exceptionally well designed for utmost functionality and at the same time dampen the effect that we have on the climate by using renewable energy in the forms of solar panels, sea water cooling systems and photovoltaic cells.
At ground level there are a variety of shops and public spaces that shows that Yacht Club de Monaco is a community project as well as one for members of the club. The scheme has a circular stairway that connects all the floors and on the first floor you will find an exclusive club room, swimming pool and bar restaurant. The second floor is comprised of double height executive offices and ‘cabins’ for guests who are staying for the night and the uppermost level is comprised of a terrace that gives a complete view of the grand prix inland or the yacht racing out into the beautiful sea.
As for Yacht Club de Monaco’s effect on climate, senior partner at Foster & Partners, Nigel Dancey, says, “W ith all of our projects, our approach to sustainability is to maximize the natural advantages of the local climate, while mitigating its extremes. We have also used locally sourced or recycled materials.” [ via ] watch video below

The Yacht Club de Monaco celebrates its 70th anniversary!
The Yacht Club de Monaco was founded by Prince Rainier III in 1953, and H.S.H. Prince Albert II has been the organisation's President since 1984. The Club is famously associated with the maritime 'art de vivre' and hosts prestigious events that ensure Monaco is at the centre of the sailing world throughout the year.
The 2023 season began in style for younger sailors, with 64 competitors aged under 14 from 16 nations arriving in January for the 13th Monaco Optimist Team Race. The international elite then came together off the Principality for some 120 top level races!
This winter, one-design racing is dropping anchor in the Principality. The best J/70 crews (a class of regatta yachts, most of which adopted Monaco as their training base to prepare for major races) will be in the waters off the Principality from 2 to 5 February for the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series, ahead of the Primo Cup-Trophée Crédit Suisse from 2 to 5 March. That event, since its creation in 1985 by H.S.H. Prince Albert II, has established itself as the biggest European one-design elite meeting in the Mediterranean.
Following the course set by the Principality, the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) is also committed to sustainable development. Organised from 20 to 26 March by the Albert II Foundation in conjunction with the Oceanographic Museum and the Centre Scientifique de Monaco, Monaco Ocean Week is an important fixture of the Monegasque calendar, a prominent event that aims to raise awareness about the conservation of marine ecosystems. The Yacht Club de Monaco will be contributing to the week's activities by hosting the 12th Environmental Symposium on the theme "Encouraging the future of more responsible yachting".
The future is a priority for the YCM, as reflected in the hosting of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, which is now into its 11th year. From 3 to 8 July, this meeting on the theme of alternative energy sources will bring together young engineers and stakeholders from the yachting industry. In its sights will be the first E-Boat Rally, which will offer the public a glimpse at the future of yachting.
The climax of a busy 2023 will be the famous Monaco Classic Week – La Belle Classe. The charm of yachting will be calling at the Principality from 13 to 16 September, an opportunity to discover the most prestigious vintage sailboats, classic motor yachts. This year's 16th edition of the event will be particularly special, as Monaco marks the centenary of the birth of Prince Rainier III.
The varies and prestigious calendar is worthy of the YCM's "Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting" strategy, aimed at positioning the Principality as a leading centre of excellence in this sector!
