Okean 50X: On board the Paolo Ferragni-designed Okean yacht

I like gadgets, but not the kind that are just for show. I like the kind that do something special. The wing-like retractable side balconies on the Brazilian-built Okean 50X immediately catch the eye. But which variety are they? I need to find out more.

Arthur Grin, Okean brand manager at HMY Yacht Sales , interrupts my contemplation. He steps forward, opens tray-like compartments in the teak deck and gently folds the stainless-steel stanchions down. The rails stowed, he pushes a button activating the hydraulics and the side balconies gently retract and become part of the gunwales. It’s impressive. This is not just a gizmo, it is a functional system that adds breadth to the open aft deck. 

Loose furniture accented in bright blue complements the grey Sunbrella seating that makes this an ideal party spot or a place to relax. With its expansive 6.27-metre beam, this deck is reminiscent of much larger yachts: Italian designer Paolo Ferragni has combined functionality with a contemporary look.

“Our motto is “Open up your world,’” says Luis Henrique Ferreira, the marketing director of Okean. “It is a play on the way the balconies open the deck, but also because the boats can deliver you to another place – ideally to another state of mind. We promote the escape.”

It’s easy to see how the boat delivers on the premise. Grin opens the stainless-steel and glass folding doors that connect the saloon to an outdoor galley and wet bar, complete with bar stools – it is located at a transition point where it can equally serve the open aft deck or the interior space. The saloon has contemporary finishes with contrasting wood laminates, lounge seats with textured cloth and engineered stone surfaces atop the cabinets. It’s wrapped in glass – interrupted only by narrow mullions – and there is incredible visibility both from the black-leather centre helm and the surrounding seating. A feeling of openness permeates the whole space.

“The boats are extremely customisable,” says Grin. “Some prefer the galley forward or down, which can easily be accomplished. The enclosed area of the cabin can even move further back to create additional interior space.”

Sample panels show a variety of finish options. The Graphite finish on board consists of grey, black and white fabrics, counters and panels and a contrasting light-wood veneer with a dark-wood stripe. Other options with warmer wood colours are Teka and Oak. Floating teak and stainless steps lead to the open flybridge. Perched up here the view is 360 degrees and, despite the height, an unmistakable connection to the surrounding water remains.

A single helm seat provides access to the wheel and controls housed in a stylised pod. We fire up the twin Volvo Penta D8 IPS 700s and talk from the L-shaped seating as we work our way out to more open water. “The boat is designed to be fast and fun for day cruises at 25-plus knots but can also run at trawler speeds for increased range and fuel economy,” Ferreira says. “We call this Duo Mode.”

In the open water of Biscayne Bay, I ease the throttles forward and the Okean 50X comes on to plane. Manoeuvring at over 20 knots I make sharp turns in two to three boat lengths. The boat leans into the turns but pops back up promptly and accelerates quickly as I straighten out. We hit a top speed in excess of 26 knots and Grin and Ferreira say she can go faster with a clean bottom. We cruise comfortably at 20 knots where I calculate a range of over 200 nautical miles.

The Okean 50X satisfies an affinity for useful gadgets, transforming from a stylish trawler to an entertaining day boat. Fold-down balconies, extensive saloon windows and open spaces on all the decks create a constant connection to the water. Three cabins including a full-beam master, queen VIP, and two heads add to the versatility. She delivers flexibility and flair in one neat package.

Think of the new, Brazilian-built Okean 80 Fly as a cross between a Swiss Army knife and that Bumblebee robot from the Transformers movie franchise. At the press of a button, wing-like sections of the yacht’s hull fold down on both sides, adding over six feet to the yacht’s 19’10” beam, and creating wide terraces for sunning or sunset cocktails.

Another button levitates a large section of the lower stern deck, transforming it into a high-diving board, in-water swim platform, or tender lift. Okean worked with Italian hydraulics experts Opacmare to integrate their aptly named Transformer multi-function platform system into the yacht.

One more button raises a near full-width section of the transom to reveal a cozy beach club hidden away behind it. That high-lifting section of hull provides welcome shade for the built-in sofa.

“We really wanted to create a yacht with real flexibility and versatility; one that allows those aboard to feel truly connected to the water,” Paolo Ferragni, Okean lead designer and head of the Cremona, Italy-based studio, Ferragni Progetti, told Robb Report .

Launched late last year, and making its U.S. show debut at the recent Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the Okean 80 Fly is the newest flagship of this young Brazilian builder. It joins the smaller, mini-me Okean 50, and the go-fast Okean 55 dayboat.

Complementing those fold-down “wings” is a main deck salon that showcases true indoor/outdoor living. Huge, floor-to-ceiling, sliding-glass doors open to let fresh air in, with equally expansive doors at the rear of the salon that open on to the large rear deck. “It is a magical feeling when you are relaxing on a sofa in the main salon, with both side doors and the rear doors fully open. It’s as if you are floating on the water,” explains Ferragni.

There’s no shortage of places to stretch out and relax. On the foredeck there’s a large U-shaped built-in sofa, while the covered aft deck features a dining table for six. Take the steps up to the vast flybridge and there’s a sun pad in front of the helm, another dining table behind and a full outdoor L-shaped kitchen.

To deliver full 360-degree visibility throughout the salon, the designer created tall, vertical, wraparound windows with slender, almost invisible mullions so as not to affect the view out. It’s the same story below decks. Ferragni created almost bow-to-stern windows set into the hull to flood the cabins with light.

His favorite element of the design? That funky quartet of windows in the full-width master cabin, flanked by smaller triangle-shaped glass. Viewed from outside, it looks as if the windows are almost touching the water.

Below decks there’s accommodation for eight guests in four spacious cabins, plus room for two crew.

The semi-displacement hull has so-called Dual Mode architecture that lets the 79-footer cruise at 12- to 14-mph displacement speeds with good fuel efficiency, yet climb close to 30 mph when the owner wants to get somewhere in a hurry. Powering the Okean are two 1,550-hp MAN turbodiesels. With 1,518 gallons of fuel aboard, the 80 can cover around 300 miles at 21 mph.

While the Fort Lauderdale 80 Fly show boat was hull number one, two more are currently under construction.”Interestingly, both owners of these new 80s have requested a fully enclosed pilothouse, rather than an open flybridge,” he says. “It is all about flexibility and versatility. Plus the appeal of air conditioning.”

The Okean 80 Fly lists for $4.58 million, or around $5 million nicely loaded, with HMY Yachts .

The first pavilion of Crocus Expo IEC hosted an extraordinary exposition of the 5th International exhibition of yachts and boats Moscow Boat Show. The show had been incredibly famous for five years already not only thanks to the specialists of the market segment as well as professional sportsmen but also thanks to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

The organizer of the project was the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. The show was supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine.

The exposition space increased up to 30 000 sq m and was accommodated in all 4 exhibition halls of the fairgrounds! 280 Russian (Arkhangelsk, Vyborg, Kazan, Kaluga, Republic of Karelia, Moscow and Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk region, Sochi, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Yaroslavl region) and foreign ( Denmark , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , Poland , USA , Turkey , Ukraine, Finland , France , Montenegro and Croatia ) companies participate in the show.

Moscow Boat Show provided the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continued to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

Unique exhibits were presented at the show for the first time: exposition of private submarines from U-Boat Russia company, Marquis Yachts 420 SB motor yacht from Sport Bridge S. Marine series, SAGA-415 yacht from Saga Boats Norwegian shipyard, Jetlev-Flyer from MS Watersports.

Moscow Boat Show a Great Success

More than 400 yachts were displayed within the frames of the event including the largest boats ever exhibited in Russia – the 19-meter giant motor yacht Princess 54 as well as the Princess 50 yacht from Nord Marine and Baja speed boat from Burevestnik.

Domfinland OY unveiled a luxury project from Finnish real estate: a seaside premium class hotel in Hanko named consonant with the location Merihanko.

The trade fair was traditionally opened by a Gala Opening Ceremony. Arcady Zlotnikov, First Deputy Director Crocus Expo IEC, was the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show. Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspection on Small size Vessels (GIMS) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, Georguiy Shaiduko, Acting President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), Olympic champion in Atlanta and Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show also spoke at the ceremony.

The high-ranking guests noted dynamic development of the branch which well reasoned the intensive growth of the exposition and appearance of rather unique “gems”.

A number of business meetings and negotiations were held within the frames of the project: the exhibition was visited by a large delegation of Greek businessmen for the purpose of establishment of mutually beneficial cooperation with the Russian colleagues.

More than 400 yachts on display at the Show

Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS) celebrated its 100 anniversary within the frames of Moscow Boat Show and arranged an exposition of future sailing sport museum (rare awards, gifts, articles from private collections, pictures and etc.) which had been collected since 1912.

Due to carefully chosen running dates the show was visited by more than 26 000 people. The majority of the visitors were of targeted audience – vessel owners and specialists of the branch.

The work at the next edition of the show is under way! The show will be held in March 2013. The overall exhibit space will comprise 40 000 sq m. The exhibition will impress with exclusive exhibits and the latest technological achievements.

Moscow Boat Show was not only an entertaining but at the same time a business promotional event. Participation in the trade fair was a unique opportunity to present a company and products to a distinctly selected targeted audience of industry specialists. They were well prepared to discuss business in the Russian market and even to close a deal on-site.

The show helped representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improved national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 5 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar.
