Inspired in Kodiak Tailored Professional Design Built in Alaska

Alaskan aluminum power catamarans, llc.

Specializing in building aluminum, hydrofoil assist, outboard powered catamarans

Thirty Two/Thirteen Walk Around Plan

Alaskan Aluminum Power Catamarans specializes in the design and building of aluminum, hydrofoil assist, outboard powered catamarans; producing a welded aluminum boat specifically designed for operating in our rugged Alaskan environment. Each of our boats is influenced by a lifetime Alaskan resident who has spent most of his life both commercially fishing and sport fish guiding around Kodiak. They are designed by an accomplished naval architect specializing in hydrofoil assist catamarans, and each boat is built here in Alaska by a team well versed in fabricating within Alaska’s Commercial Fishing and Sport Boating industry.

The catamaran-style hull is well known for its stability, extra width, and fuel efficiency. However, the asymmetrical hulls on our boats recognize that the water inside a catamaran’s tunnel is different from the water displaced on the outboard sides of the boat when underway. This design helps to further improve on the catamaran idea; preparing for and mitigating chop entering the tunnel for a smoother ride at speed, as well as minimizing drag, increasing fuel efficiency, and range.

Our hydrofoil further improves that catamaran concept and acts like an airplane wing securely fixed between the hulls, providing several inches of lift to the entire boat on plane. Lifting the boat reduces the wetted surface, thereby reducing drag, increasing fuel efficiency, speed, and range. Lifting the boat also increases the distance between the water’s surface and tunnel, further softening and improving the ride in chop. Our hydrofoils are designed and placed to maximize lift at practical cruising speeds and anticipate a variety of load conditions.

Cabin and deck layout are easily customizable and easily tailored to suit your specific tastes and goals for your vessel. We are very happy to work with you and include our own personal experiences and suggestions as we help to create your ideal platform; whether you are a charter captain looking for a layout specific to your clients needs, a remote cabin owner interested in hauling material and supplies, or any normal Alaskan looking to take family and friends out for a day or week of fun. These decisions aren’t new to us and we enjoy helping tailor this technology to your application.

Alaskan Dream Ship Reviews from Our Travelers

After 18 months of social distancing because of COVID, it was an absolute pleasure to be on a small boat cruise in Alaska's Inner Passage with 36 fellow travelers. We were all vaccinated and tested and welcomed the opportunity to get to know each other on-board without masks and distancing.

This was the most wonderful vacation my husband and I ever had. Everything was well organized and FUN. We enjoyed our cruise on the Alaskan Dream--the smaller boat was just perfect.

The whole trip including itinerary, organized outings, FOOD, and wildlife contact and sightings were top notch.

The flexibility of the small boat, the sense of community both among passengers and between passengers and crew, was extraordinary.

This was one of the most outstanding trips I have ever been on. The boat was the perfect size for us, the crew was exceptional, the food was fresh and delicious, and the natural beauty was breath-taking. I cannot say enough positive things about this experience.

After 18 months of social distancing because of COVID, it was an absolute pleasure to be on a small boat cruise in Alaska's Inner Passage with 36 fellow travelers. We were all vaccinated and tested and welcomed the opportunity to get to know each other on-board without masks and distancing. We were a diverse age group from around the US and we enjoyed each other as much as our shared adventure. We formed a photo sharing platform that allows us to re-live our trip into the future. I (age 78) was traveling with my oldest daughter (age 53) for the first time. It was the first time since the start of the Pandemic that we felt comfortable planning such a trip and even though the Delta variant was growing rapidly, we felt protected with the safety protocol and arrangements.

The small boat trip in Alaska's Inner Passage was fantastic. The crew, the planned side trips, the food, the fellowship, the accommodations exceeded my expectations. The Denali Backcountry Explorer trip was changed at the last minute because of an avalanche that closed Denali Park at the midway point. The recommended alternative accommodations provided an excellent base to explore Denali and the area. I enjoyed the Inner Passage boat trip with uncharacteristic days of excellent whale watching, bear encounters, kayaking, small towns and lots of insights into local and native culture. Naturalist guides were outstanding. There were no down experiences on our 17 days in Alaska. There was the right balance of sightseeing, fellowship, education and cultural experiences. Even the transition from Inner Passage cruise ship to Denali Backcountry Explorer was enjoyable with built in time to explore Anchorage on our own.

Accommodations Review

The size of the Alaskan Dream ship allowed easy access to all areas, plentiful places to relax and enjoy the other passengers. We appreciated the extras like the binoculars and wet suits provided. The staterooms were tight but well equipped.  Bedding excellent. Loved the on-board talks and captain's making changes to take advantage of weather or wildlife sightings.

Meals Review

Food on the boat was surprisingly good and plentiful. I ate way too much and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Crew & Guides Review

Could not have asked for better - for our Captain, crew, trip leader, and guides on board and at various small town stops. Their obvious knowledge of the area and culture was evident. Such a delightful combination.

Transportation Review

All arrangements were provided and documented in advance and worked as intended. Making a change mid-trip because of an avalanche in Denali was handled professionally and with compassion.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

From the very beginning of our planning, all communications have be thorough, thoughtful and helped identify the right combination of trips to Alaska, including a small boat trip and a planned backcountry trip. We appreciated the pre-trip communications and arrived with the recommended clothing and gear for anticipated weather. When an avalanche made the Denali Backcountry trip impossible, we were notified immediately with suggested alternatives. At their recommendation, we were booked into a quality resort outside Denali Park and sorted through various add-on adventures, including white water rafting and a helicopter ride.

We were provided with sufficient information about what to expect as to weather and time of year. Our daily schedule outlined the high points and included information about meals and lodging. Transfer between points was included. The list of what to bring was very helpful. Including information about how to handle anticipated wildlife helped allay fears.

Traveler Advice

Heed the advice of the trip planners to ensure the best experience. Look for trips that include local narrative and guides and have a track record of melding small groups into long friendships through shared experiences.

This was the most wonderful vacation my husband and I ever had. Everything was well organized and FUN.  We enjoyed our cruise on the Alaskan Dream--the smaller boat was just perfect. (I would never have gone on one of those 5,000-passenger leviathans). Everyone aboard was so much FUN! Of the 37 passengers on the Alaskan Dream, 30 were from Maine--a group of friends who had kind of a travelling club. They were very welcoming, inclusive, and friendly toward those of us non-Mainers--not at all cliquish, as one might expect. And, boy, did they like to party hearty! We had such a wonderful time with these people!

I thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and the visits to the Native Alaskan villages. It was wonderful and a privilege to learn about the Tlingit, Tsimshian, and Haida cultures. I loved hearing the traditional stories and legends, the songs, and the people speaking in their own languages. What a beautiful experience!

The Alaskan Dream was, quite simply, a dream boat. Everyone on the staff, from Captain Eric to the crew onboard, went out of their way to make sure everyone was comfortable and happy. The beds were very comfortable.

My husband had been wanting to go on an Alaskan cruise for quite some time.  I was the one dragging my feet because I didn't want to be stuck on a giant cruise ship.  My husband's cousin and wife had made arrangements through AdventureSmith and just raved about it.  I was particularly taken by the small boat--I figured a 104 foot catamaran holding 40 passengers was much more my speed (I hate crowds).  It was the size of the boat that made me decide to go with this trip.  My husband and I thought it would be more like a floating B & B, and we were right!

Oh, my word! We ate like KINGS! The seafood was absolutely to die for! The menus onboard the Alaskan Dream were varied, and everything Chef Garrett made was incredible. I was impressed that each meal offered a seafood, meat, and vegetarian option; and if someone had special requirements (lactose or gluten intolerance, for example), the chef made special meals for them. Everything--the soups, the appetizers, the main courses, and the desserts--were delicious and plentiful.

Pack for ALL kinds of weather--hot weather as well as "Alaska" weather. We had nine days of sunny, hot weather (totally unexpected, I know) and were really not prepared for it. I'd been looking forward to nice, cool Alaska weather!

Everyone was wonderful. Alex and Kari were both enthusiastic and knowledgeable, very personable and friendly, and just plain nice to be around. Alex was great at identifying birds, land animals, and sea animals. Kari was great at explaining about the Tlingit culture and the local areas we visited. The most wonderful thing she did was "sing up" a pod of orcas. We came upon the pod, and they promptly dived underwater. Kari got a drum and sang a Tlingit killer whale song, and the orcas immediately popped back up! They stayed for as long as she sang; and when the song ended, they dived back down again. It is the most spiritual experience I've ever had, and many of the guests who witnessed this agreed with me. I'll never forget this as long as I live.

Everything was SO enjoyable, so well organized, and so much fun. I've been telling all my friends just what a wonderful job AdventureSmith did and strongly recommending you. I especially appreciated the fact that you folks took care of EVERYTHING from the plane flights to ground transport. It's the first trip I've been on where I didn't have to do every-darned-thing myself.  It was great.

We got lots of good information on what to expect while we were in Alaska, what to pack, etc. What we didn't expect was the totally unprecedented heatwave. We had only one day that was below 75 degrees--thank God the humidity was very low! We'd packed our long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, jean, knee socks, waterproof shoes/boots, windbreakers, and rain gear...and didn't need them! Thank goodness, we'd packed a few summer things in anticipation for our stay in Washington after our Alaska trip--those are what we wore most often! It was amazing.

The whole trip including itinerary, organized outings, FOOD, and wildlife contact and sightings were top notch. The staff was incredible and Captain Erik made sure that our requests and 'dreams' were fulfilled. He went the extra mile as did the excellent naturalists and contacts in the communities. I really loved taking the zodiac raft out to get a MUCH closer look at the wildlife and to generally explore. My husband, a non swimmer, actually tried his hand at the kayaks. The sheer majestic scenery of Glacier Bay, Stikine River (and its link to the Gold Rush), Kasaan and the restoration of the longhouse, Tracy Arm Fjord  glacial flows and on and on made this trip of 31 passengers so much better than the large liners that passed us but couldn't get to the small inlets that we did. How lucky were we!!! Sitka was an interesting town and I bumped into a group of women making baskets out of salmon skin. This was sponsored by a local museum. Great to see Native American art being passed on.

The bed was really comfortable and I loved looking out of the large picture window at night to see the light....LOL and also on occasion when  I would wake up early in the morning I would see the night sky and the moon. The shower and toilet combo worked well but was a bit of a tight squeeze but makes sense for this type of transportation. I really liked the nightly sheet left on our bed about the following day's activities. I could read up about what we were going to see and do. I also liked the intercom in the room to alert us to various wildlife or geological sightings.

The food was OUTSTANDING. Great choices, so carefully prepared. The baker also did an outstanding job of keeping everyone in fresh, hot, delicious goodies. The afternoon cookies at the bar were very popular. Pounds were gained but who cared!!! As I am lactose intolerant, I was amazed at how the chef and her staff created incredible alternatives for me to eat as did the baker.

I am use to organizing our trips so it was nice to have someone else advising on what we needed to take and things (such as waterproof pants and jackets) etc. would be provided. Aaron cheerfully answered all of my questions.

Larissa and Simon were the two naturalists who guided us through the daily activities and provided evening slide shows on topics of interest. Both were wonderful and knowledgeable. Not only was Larissa knowledgeable about nature but she was an accomplished photographer and artist. At the end of the journey she created a DVD of photographs with music for all of us to take as a great memory of our journey together. Simon was remarkable. He is so eager to learn. He was substituting for the other naturalist who was assigned to us for the trip. It was his first stint at this and honestly his enthusiasm was so huge and his passion for his work so strong. He was funny, a great communicator, and a real joy to share time with. Both were always there to answer any questions and guide us to books in the ship's library for additional information.

I loved my time spent with Alice who shared her Tlingit history with us. She and I had a quiet talk at the end of the day that she spent with us in Glacier Bay. She drummed and sang a welcoming song as we sat in the corner. My goal was to call the Orcas to us and sure enough...the last day we were on water a WHOLE POD came by and accompanied the boat. My dream for the trip. We had a great staff server for food, Mystique. She was light-hearted and fun and personalized her service regarding meals..she remembered the special things we liked when eating the delicious foods. Capt. Erik was, of course, on a mission to find me my Orca experience and sure enough, he delivered.

Take time to just enjoy the majesty of Alaska!

  • Inside Passage Sojourn

Pretty much over the moon. It didn't hurt that the weather gods gave us three sunny days at the beginning and two at the end (esp. in Glacier Bay!). But the scenery, critters (we saw the works), and calving glaciers aside, the flexibility of the small boat, the sense of community both among passengers and between passengers and crew, was extraordinary. And I'm an introvert!

We loved staying in Ketchikan before the trip started, loved the whole town. The Alaska Dream's only shortcoming was the small lounge and lack of a place to read or write undisturbed--except, of course, the stateroom, which was fine.

Chef B's cooking was very fine, and her imagination made for zero gustatory boredom. The only problem was the high-sugar desserts twice a day. Made for over-stress on the self-control muscles. I gained six (right, 6) pounds!

Be sure to bring your own good binoculars and enough warm clothes to bear up under the KATABATIC WINDS!

Captain Erik Morrow was magnificent--steady, laid-back, warm, yet instilled great confidence. Emily Herman was terrific in every way: enthusiastic, knowledgeable, responsive, experienced, imaginative in her presentations. Everyone on the boat fell in love with her. Ranger Nicole Schaub was equally engaging: really knows her stuff, very articulate, sensitive, and more than anything else, smart about the larger environmental and political issues while still being appropriately politic. We have nominated her for Secretary of the Interior in 2020. We trust she is preparing for that position now. Also, Victoria was a marvelous introduction in Ketchikan. She is grounded, genuine, ironic, and fun.

Nick was great--fun to talk with, quick to respond, clear with materials and information.

This was one of the most outstanding trips I have ever been on. The boat was the perfect size for us, the crew was exceptional, the food was fresh and delicious, and the natural beauty was breath-taking. I cannot say enough positive things about this experience.

I most enjoyed the areas of natural beauty - Misty Fjords and Glacier Bay. Perhaps the highlight of the trip was an unscheduled jet boat add-on trip to a glacier that our captain arranged for us with guides he knew in the local area. The jet boat traveled through increasingly icy water until we were basically plowing through slush, with mother and baby harbor seals surrounding us on the ice floes. We saw a young bull moose swimming in the channel, before rounding the bend and gazing on the glacier, which had ice-blue highlights. While we watched, a giant piece of the glacier calved off, hit the water, and spouted into the air. Other peak experiences were watching breaching orcas and humpback whales, close to the boat. The other experience that was so special was in-depth conversations with the guides on board. Both women were knowledgeable, outgoing, and delightful. And finally, the polar plunge!

The cabins were small, but did not seem claustrophobic. I was impressed at how comfortable the mattresses and comforters were. The showers were tiny, but plenty of hot water. The boat had a very nice lounge area with large viewing windows, where everyone on the trip tended to congregate for good company when we were not out on the decks looking at wildlife and the surroundings. I would definitely travel on this ship again.

The food on board was plentiful and outstanding, as my extra five pounds will attest! Every meal had a fresh seafood option, and all the food was delicious. The crew was so accommodating, as we asked for extra dessert, mixed and matched the side dishes, and tweaked our meals at will.

Captain Eric was the best! He not only got us where we were going in style, but he was friendly and went the extra mile for us. One example: We came back late from our jet boat trip, so had to skip dinner. The crew provided sandwiches for us on the jet boat about 7:30 pm, but by about 10 pm, back on the boat, there were a few hungry people still in the bar area. We started making noises about the left-over venison chili in the kitchen. The bartender (Amy, the amazing zen master of the bar) called Eric, who came down to the kitchen, opened it up, and reheated the chili for us. They then served it for us with complete place settings at the bar.

I need to say a few more words about Amy, who took my 21-year old daughter under her wing and taught her about discerning drinking. She quickly figured out what Kate liked to drink, and concocted new drinks for her, all of which were delicious. She was also unfailingly kind and cheerful - the yoda of mixology.

Finally, I must give a shout-out to Erin and Brittney, our two guides. You could not ask for a nicer, more generous spirited couple of women.

I have no complaints about this area - it's just that most of the transportation was arranged by the Alaskan Dream team.

Everything was great - timely, complete, and clear information.

Pack layers, including one pair of shorts and a couple of short sleeved t-shirts, if you're going in the summer. The temperatures got up to the upper 70's. I should have packed one pair of shoes that were easy to slip on and off for the boat, since we spent a lot of time on the boat traveling around and wildlife viewing.

Incredible Wildlife

Come aboard the Alaskan Story to get up close and personal with Alaska’s incredible wildlife. See humpback whales, brown bears, orcas, sea lions, harbor seals, Dall’s porpoises, eagles, and perhaps even wolves and moose.

Crown Jewel Permits

Alaska Yacht Charters has all of the permits required to allow access to Alaska’s otherwise restricted-entry federal and state lands and waters. The Alaskan Story is one of only a few ships to have permits to cruise in Glacier Bay National Park.

Premium Alaskan Cuisine

Using our saltwater fishing gear you can catch Dungeness crab or Alaskan spotted shrimp. The freshest available produce selected by our chef is often combined with the “catch of the day”, and is a highlight of every trip.

truly unplug

Each day ends in a quiet secluded anchorage.

You will have the opportunity to go for a hike or kayak along the shore viewing birds, marine life, and even Alaskan brown bears. Or you can stay aboard and watch a video, listen to music, or read a book from our extensive library.

We are all in awe of the experience we had aboard the Alaskan Story. We all agreed the yacht and the crew are perfect. The fishing and animal sightings were phenomenal.

Alaskan Story is a magnificent yacht! Chef Ryan Lindsay served five-star meals featuring the salmon, halibut, crab and shrimp that we caught. Food was made from scratch; and the desserts!

What makes Sea Roamer Charters different?

Sea Roamer Charters offers an exclusive fishing experience on the custom-built Sea Roamer—”the finest vessel of the fleet.” You charter with Sitka-based Captain Mike ensures personalized attention and your group as the sole charter for the day. We go beyond fishing, providing tailored lodging, meals, and exploration options all at a competitive price. In contrast to lodge packages, Sea Roamer Charters guarantees an individualized experience, avoiding being one among many on a production fleet boat. Choose Sea Roamer Charters for a personalized adventure creating lasting memories with an experienced crew dedicated to serving you.

Our promise to you

As experienced and dedicated captains, we draw on our years of Sitka, Alaska charter and commercial fishing experiences, our respect for the raw power of the ocean, as well as our knowledge and love of wild places. Such a breadth of knowledge and experience allows us to be flexible and tailor your fishing adventure to your unique needs and interests. It is our promise to strive to customize your Sitka, Alaska fishing trip rather than offer you a “canned and packaged” fishing “tour.”

Customized charter packages just for you.

Testimonials, "a great experience always aboard the sea roamer captain mike and first mate erik do everything in their power to make sure you have the best experience. if you want to do more of the work yourself, no problem. they let you get involved. you want to relax and just reel in fish no problem as they'll take care of you.".

Eric Carlton

"I have been fishing in Alaska off and on for 20 years. With Mike and the crew on the Sea Roamer, this was my best trip by far. We have already booked for next September."

Robert O’Neal

"Prior to finding Mike, I fished on five other boats in Sitka during my 30 years of Sitka fishing. There are absolutely no other fishing charters I would even consider as a present-day option. Sea Roamer Charters is the Gold Standard which all the remaining fishermen in Sitka get compared too."

"i have fished a lot, for many years, including many trips with guides. never, however, have i had an experience that equaled the one provided by the sea roamer duo, mike and eric. they know where and how to find the fish, and how to catch them. in our four days of fishing, we caught a lot of fish, including at least 11 species. these included several large and one very large halibut.".

The 9 best Alaska cruises for every type of traveler in 2025

Fran Golden

Even with a season that only runs from April through October, Alaska draws roughly 40 big cruise ships and dozens of smaller cruise vessels each year, making it one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world after the Caribbean and Europe. The best Alaska cruises range from off-the-beaten-path voyages on vessels carrying fewer than 100 passengers to weeklong jaunts through the Inside Passage aboard megaships that hold thousands.

It can be hard to figure out which cruise ship will deliver your idea of a "bucket list" experience in the Last Frontier. A lot comes down to your travel style, preferences and budget.

Some travelers demand luxury Alaska cruises , while others don't mind going less fancy if it means close encounters with bears and other creatures in the wilderness. Some look for romance, while others want to introduce the kids or grandkids to glaciers and eagles, gold panning and sled dogs.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The good news is there's a ship in Alaska for you no matter your taste or style. Here's a beginners guide to the best Alaska cruises to help you narrow down your choices.

Best for megaresort fans: Anthem of the Seas

catamaran in alaska

Royal Caribbean is known for its floating megaresorts, which carry thousands and are big on amenities, glitz and a certain amount of glamor — think flashy casinos, high-tech shows and lavish spas. Dining and drinking venues number in the dozens, while amusement park features thrill the kids and adrenaline-seekers.

The line always stations one or two Quantum Class ships in Alaska for the season. On the 4,180-passenger Anthem of the Seas, you can order a drink from a robotic bartender, try simulated skydiving or surfing experiences, and take a ride in a glass capsule that travels high above your ship on a mechanical arm — a weird and wonderful way to see the Alaska scenery. Adults can linger in the glass-walled Solarium, relaxing in the indoor pools and whirlpools, while their kids zoom around the SeaPlex in bumper cars.

Anthem of the Seas sails round-trip from Seattle on seven-night cruises, but the exact itinerary varies by week. The ship cruises Endicott Arm for scenic views of Dawes Glacier and typically visits two Alaska ports and Victoria.

Best for land and sea adventures: Koningsdam

catamaran in alaska

Holland America Line has offered Alaska cruises for 75 years and is clearly a market leader. The line tops the list in terms of cruises, as well as cruisetours, which combine time sailing with overnight stays on land. The company operates its own lodges, rail cars and motorcoaches for exploration of Alaska's interior and beyond.

Related: The coolest things to do on an Alaska cruise

The line will send six ships to Alaska in 2025, with tour offerings to Denali, Fairbanks and Anchorage. However, it's the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam that offers some of the most interesting cruisetour itineraries out there.

The ship offers nine- to 14-night cruisetours that head into the Canadian Yukon, following the route of the Klondike gold rush from Alaska to northwestern Canada. You'll sail from Vancouver to Skagway, with a stop in Tracy Arm or Glacier Bay National Park, then travel to Whitehorse and Dawson City in the Yukon before continuing on to Fairbanks (the gateway to Arctic Alaska), Denali National Park (home to North America's largest peak) and Anchorage.

On board, enjoy live music at Billboard Onboard and B.B. King's Blues Club, play a game of pickleball on the outer deck or enjoy fine dining at numerous restaurants serving sushi and Asian cuisine, steak, seafood, Italian fare and Dutch treats.

Best for families: Disney Wonder

catamaran in alaska

If you're traveling with young kids in Alaska and want an activity- and entertainment-packed experience, make a beeline for Disney Cruise Line and its Alaska-based Disney Wonder. The ship has an extensive children's program, high-quality entertainment and such activities as waterslides and play areas.

Cabins are designed with families in mind and include split bathrooms (one with a toilet and sink, the other with a shower/tub combo and sink), as well as pullout sofa beds and bunks to sleep four in a cabin. Disney-themed restaurants and attentive wait staff take the stress out of family mealtimes.

Bonus: Everyone's favorite Disney characters will be on board for shows and meet-and-greets. Goofy might even make an appearance as you admire soaring eagles, blue icebergs and glaciers.

Best value Alaska cruise: Radiance of the Seas

catamaran in alaska

When cruise lines send a fleet of ships to Alaska for the summer, the older, smaller ships tend to offer more reduced prices than you'll find on the lines' larger and newer ships.

Royal Caribbean's 23-year-old ship Radiance of the Seas mainly sails weeklong, one-way cruises between Vancouver and Seward, Alaska, with prices below $100 per person, per night, for inside cabins on many departures.

However, its late-season September 2025 sailing from Seward to Vancouver is the cheapest weeklong Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise you can book for next year. At the time of this guide's posting, it started at just $417 per person for an inside cabin. (Generally, you'll find better Alaska cruise deals from April to early June and in September and early October than you will in the height of summer.)

The ship might not have all the crazy attractions of its Alaska counterpart Anthem of the Seas, but it still offers kids clubs, outdoor movies, an indoor adults-only solarium, a rock-climbing wall, themed parties and multiple dining venues — making it a great value for the price.

If you're looking for other surefire ways to save, inside and ocean-view cabins are often much cheaper than balcony cabins on Alaska cruises. Those private verandas are highly desirable, with everyone seeking views of the wilderness, snowcapped peaks and glaciers. As those reserves get low, the prices tend to get higher.

Bargain seekers should either book early for these accommodations or choose inside, outside or guarantee cabins (where you don't pick your room location) to save more.

Best for Alaskan adventure: Wilderness Legacy

catamaran in alaska

If adventure is what you crave on an Alaska cruise, you should seek out the small ships of UnCruise Adventures. All of the line's itineraries boast an active component, but its "Wild, Woolly and Wow" itinerary claims to be "the most active back country itinerary" of UnCruise's 2025 Alaska cruises.

A day aboard the 86-passenger Wilderness Legacy might start out with a hike through a forest to see waterfalls followed by a late-day kayak adventure in Thomas Bay. Or, you might enjoy a bit of scenic cruising by LeConte Glacier (where the big ships don't go) by small boat or even stand-up paddleboard. Big ships can only offer deckside viewing of the marvels of Glacier Bay, but UnCruise Adventures sends its ships to the rarely visited outback.

Mountain biking, whale watching and glacier hiking are all on your cruise agenda. Just when you're ready for a rest, guided skiff tours will take guests in search of Alaskan wildlife in remote bays and secret coves.

The seven-night itinerary sails round-trip from Juneau.

Best for multigenerational groups: Discovery Princess

catamaran in alaska

Alaska has become a hot spot for multigenerational family travel, with grandparents taking their kids and grandkids of all ages on a memory-making holiday. Princess Cruises is a line that offers something for everyone, and its Alaska-based Discovery Princess is our top choice for family reunion groups.

The 2-year-old Discovery Princess sails round-trip to Alaska from Seattle, a convenient U.S. home port for families to fly or drive to. Its "North to Alaska" program will delight kids with totem pole decorating, sled dog puppies in the ship's Piazza and northern lights viewing in an on-ship planetarium. Parents and grandparents will appreciate local seafood on restaurant menus and onboard cultural programming with Alaska residents.

While the kids enjoy Discovery Princess' spacious children's and teens clubs, the adults might linger over a craft cocktail or enjoy a massage in the onboard spa. The family can come together for meals in a variety of casual and fine dining restaurants, and enjoy original production shows as the ship sails between ports.

Best for luxury lovers: Seabourn Quest

catamaran in alaska

If you envision sipping Champagne as you watch a glacier thunderously calve into the sea, consider booking an all-inclusive luxury cruise on a Seabourn ship.

The 458-passenger Seabourn Quest throws a dash of adventure into its luxurious surroundings. In addition to offering passengers complimentary Champagne and caviar and housing them in spacious suites, the ship boasts an onboard expedition team and does a posh version of expedition cruising in Alaska, using inflatable Zodiac craft and kayaks.

Seabourn calls its program Ventures by Seabourn. Experts on board these sailings include naturalists, biologists and other scientists who are members of the expedition team. They lead the outdoor activities and provide passengers with a deeper insight into Alaska. Once guests finish communing with nature, they can indulge in gourmet cuisine in multiple restaurants, enjoy a complimentary cocktail or relax in an upscale spa.

Seabourn Quest sails both one-way, weeklong itineraries between Vancouver and Juneau and two-week round-trip itineraries from Vancouver. It visits popular Alaska ports like Ketchikan and Sitka, as well as less-touristed destinations like Wrangell, Prince Rupert (a port city in Canada) and Rudyerd Bay.

Best for off-the-beaten-path travel: National Geographic Quest

catamaran in alaska

If you're looking to get away from the mega-cruise-ship crowds, the best Alaska cruise for you might be with Lindblad Expeditions. The 100-passenger National Geographic Quest (and its twin, National Geographic Venture) frequents off-the-beaten-path destinations in Alaska on weeklong itineraries between Juneau and Sitka.

Guests can explore the small fishing town of Petersburg or search for orca and humpback whales in Frederick Sound. Lindblad has special permits to bring passengers into the wilderness of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and the Tongass National Forest, beyond what the big ships can offer. A hike on Chichagof Island is the perfect opportunity to spot bald eagles in the wild.

One day is even dedicated to serendipitous exploration. The ship's captain has the flexibility to seek out the best remote islands and bays for beachcombing, tide pooling, hiking and kayaking adventures.

As long as you don't mind a mellower environment where lectures and impromptu guitar singalongs replace casinos and show productions, you'll be right at home as you deeply experience coastal Alaska.

Best for solo travelers: Norwegian Bliss

catamaran in alaska

Solo travelers don't always have to pay double to cruise Alaska on their own. Several ships feature cabins designed and priced for one. Several Norwegian Cruise Line ships feature cozy studio cabins designed and priced for one person, and the 4,004-passenger Norwegian Bliss offers 82 solo rooms on its round-trip Seattle cruises to Alaska.

These solo cabins get our vote because they're located in a complex where a private lounge encourages mingling. Lone travelers can also meet their shipmates while waiting to hop into a race car on the ship's go-kart track, at a showing of "Jersey Boys" or over a muddled drink at the Sugarcane Mojito Bar.

The ship sails seven-night cruises from Seattle, visiting Dawes Glacier, Sitka and Icy Strait Point, as well as Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria, British Columbia.

Introducing Norwegian's New Season of Summer 2026 Sailings

Norwegian Announces New Season of Sailings for Summer 2026

We’ve just unveiled our first itineraries for Summer 2026 — a group of sailings based on guest feedback and global travel trends. One major point of growth across the world of travel is the desire to see new destinations while remaining close to home. Our gorgeous fall New England & Canada cruises offer the unique opportunity to do just that. Guests can discover new regions, landscapes, and cities they’ve never seen before, but do so from a close-to-home port.

Cruises to Bermuda are also the perfect way to get a dose of sun and sand without travelling too far. And everyone loves The Caribbean , how can you not? So we’re sending one of our newest ships, Norwegian Prima, on both Eastern & Western Caribbean itineraries that can be enjoyed separately or combined together for an unforgettable tropical vacation. One bucket-list destination that is not close to home but is best explored by cruise ship is Alaska , and no one does Alaska like NCL. The summer and fall are the best time to explore The Last Frontier (think Northern Lights and Midnight Sun), and our 2026 itineraries to The Greatest Outdoors are sure to be our best yet!

Ready to start planning? Explore all 2026 cruises .

Norwegian Jewel in Philadelphia

A Philadelphia Story for Norwegian Jewel

What do the Liberty Bell, Rocky Balboa, cheesesteak sandwiches and Norwegian Jewel have in common? They'll all be in Philadelphia in the spring of 2026. (OK, Rocky is a statue, but you get the idea). Yup, Norwegian Cruise Line is officially the only cruise line home porting in the City of Brotherly Love.

The exquisitely refurbished Jewel will start her journey in April 2026, transporting guests from the streets of Philadelphia to the pink sands of Bermuda . These months are ideal times to visit this beautiful British territory, thanks to the region’s mild, sub-tropical climate and its southerly winds. All sailings spend multiple days in the famous Royal Naval Dockyard , providing plenty of time to explore the island’s exciting attractions, first-rate shopping, world-class golf and maritime history. From a family beach day on beautiful Horseshoe Bay to snorkeling through an underwater world to a moonlight on a catamaran ride, this destination has it all.

On her journey down to the tropics, Jewel will also make stops in America’s picturesque and historic cities. While on board, guests can enjoy Jewel’s delicious dining at restaurants like Cagney’s Steakhouse and Le Bistro , play on the multi-level sports court, sip cocktails at Sugarcane Mojito Bar, take in spectacular entertainment, and live it up at Bliss Ultra Lounge.

US Coast Guard spots Chinese naval ships off Alaska island

In this photo provided by the U.S. Coast Guard, a Coast Guard Cutter Kimball crew-member observes a foreign vessel in the Bering Sea, Monday, Sept. 19, 2022.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A U.S. Coast Guard cutter on routine patrol in the Bering Sea came across several Chinese military ships in international waters but within the U.S. exclusive economic zone, officials said Wednesday.

The crew detected three vessels approximately 124 miles north of the Amchitka Pass in the Aleutian Islands, the Coast Guard said in a statement. A short time later, a helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak spotted a fourth ship approximately 84 miles north of the Amukta Pass.

All four of the People’s Republic of China vessels were “transiting in international waters but still inside the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone,” which extends 200 nautical miles from the U.S. shoreline, the statement said.

“The Chinese naval presence operated in accordance with international rules and norms,” said Rear Adm. Megan Dean, Seventeenth Coast Guard District commander. “We met presence with presence to ensure there were no disruptions to U.S. interests in the maritime environment around Alaska.”

U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Kimball is a 418-foot ship based in Honolulu.

This wasn’t the first time Chinese naval ships have sailed near Alaska waters. In September 2022 , the Kimball spotted a guided missile cruiser from China in the Bering Sea. And in Sept. 2021, Coast Guard cutters in the Bering Sea and North Pacific Ocean encountered Chinese ships, about 50 miles off the Aleutian Islands.

The U.S. military routinely conducts what it calls freedom of navigation operations in disputed waters in Asia that China claims as its own, deploying Navy ships to sail through waterways such as the South China Sea . The U.S. says freedom of navigation in the waters is in America’s national interest.

Alaska considers new limits for cruise ship visitors in this popular port city

The visitor limit agreement would go into effect in 2026.

The pristine natural beauty of Alaska boasts breathtaking landscapes with vast national parks, glaciers and 6,640 miles of coastline that makes the destination particularly popular for cruises.

Now, the capital port city of Juneau, where crowds have been sailing in in record numbers, is considering a limit on large cruise ships with 250 passengers or more that would cap the number of daily visitors starting in 2026 to help combat overtourism.

New agreement in Alaska to limit cruise ship visitors

catamaran in alaska

Last month, cruise lines including Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian signed an agreement with Juneau tourism officials to help manage the thousands of passengers getting off the boats at the same time and visiting the area.

While the numbers are subject to change, Sundays through Fridays, cruise crowds are expected to be capped at 16,000. That number will be limited to 12,000 on Saturdays.

The new agreement expands on last year's decision to implement a limit of five cruise ships per day in Juneau.

catamaran in alaska

Juneau is home to some amazing outdoor attractions, such as whale watching and Mendenhall Glacier, but some local residents said they've had enough of the post-pandemic crowds.

"I personally came to the realization that Alaska was being sold as a friendly place and that my friendliness was a commodity for the cruise lines," resident Karla Hart told ABC News. "The idea is just one day every week to just take a pause -- to have our community back."

In 2023, a record 1.6 million cruise passengers visited Juneau, including Sarah Grathwohlwent, who was there for the first time earlier this spring and documented her journey on social media.

"It was beautiful to go and see a glacier -- was my first one," she said. "I'm not against limiting the amount of cruise ships, I think it would make it nicer for the locals who live there year round."

Overtourism around the world prompts new crowd management systems

catamaran in alaska

Scott Keyes, travel expert and founder of Going.com, said that the challenges of overtourism are not isolated to Juneau.

"We have been setting new travel records every month so far in 2024, and there's no reason to think that's going to stop," he told ABC News.

In the U.S., Mount Rainier is among the National Parks that have begun implementing timed entry reservations to help manage large crowds. In Europe, hotspot destinations like Venice and Barcelona have implemented day trip fees for visitors .

Over the weekend in Barcelona, thousands of locals protested in the streets with water guns to take a stand against tourism, which they say has resulted in a higher cost of living for residents.

Venice implements visitor entry fees: What to know about the new system

Due to increased demand in Athens, Greece, the city is also studying limits on tourist capacity.

Experts believe that as more destinations see surges in visitors, local officials may implement restrictions to deal with crowds diplomatically.

"I'm all in favor of steps taken to try to make sure you're managing that properly and respecting the local environment and everything," Keyes said.

  • Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer Honored for Saving 3 Imperiled Sailors in Alaska

A Coast Guard MH-60 helicopter aircrew rescues three people

The video doesn't do justice to the heroic rescue of three mariners Jan. 9 off Khaz Point, Alaska, in 15-foot seas, 35-degree water temperatures and a capsized boat heading dangerously toward shore.

Into the maelstrom jumped Aviation Survival Technician 2nd Class Aaron Mulkey, a veteran Coast Guard rescue swimmer facing a series of critical decisions to ensure that everyone would make it out alive.

For his actions that evening, Mulkey has been named the Armed Services YMCA Angels of the Battlefield Award recipient for 2024 for the Coast Guard and will be nominated for the Department of Homeland Security's Lifesaving Award.

Read Next: New Research Finds Blood Cancer Cases at Malmstrom Air Force Base Likely Not 'Due to Chance'

According to his nomination for the Angels of the Battlefield Award by Cmdr. Rand Semke, commander of Air Station Sitka, so much could have gone wrong with the rescue.

On that night, the Coast Guard received an SOS alert from an iPhone on a capsized catamaran with three people aboard, including one who was critically injured. The distress signal was faint but urgent, and air response was dispatched within 17 minutes.

When the boat was finally spotted, it was drifting toward an inhospitable coastline, requiring immediate rescue. Mulkey was put in the water, where he swam toward the vessel, timing the waves and maneuvering through currents to reach the boat. The plan was to retrieve the three using a rescue basket, and Mulkey swam to it with the most injured victim.

But the conditions were too violent for that method of extraction. Mulkey then swam the injured sailor back to the overturned hull and used a sling to hoist them to the helicopter above, holding the sailor's bleeding head gently during the ride up. Once the survivor was put into the helicopter, he performed the maneuver two more times, plucking the remaining two victims from the roiling ocean to safety.

His job wasn't over, however. Once he was in the helicopter, he administered medical aid to the boaters, treating them for hypothermia and the severe head injuries.

According to the award write-up, Mulkey's actions epitomize "the utmost ideals of courage and selfless service," Semke wrote.

"AST2 Mulkey's steadfast commitment to duty and unmatched skill in the face of adversity served as a beacon of hope and assurance to the three survivors that fateful evening," Semke said.

The Angels of the Battlefield honor is given each year to an enlisted medical professional in each of the armed services' medical branches.

The recipients for the Army , Navy and Air Force , as well as the Defense Health Agency, will be announced in the coming weeks, according to an Armed Forces YMCA spokeswoman.

But the Coast Guard proudly issued a servicewide message about Mulkey's award nearly as soon as the service found out on July 2.

"AST2 Mulkey's actions were extraordinarily heroic, brought great credit upon the Coast Guard, and highly merit this year's recognition as the Coast Guard's 2024 Armed Services YMCA Angel of the Battlefield. Bravo zulu for a job very well done," wrote U.S. Public Health Service Rear Adm. Shane Steiner, executive director of health services for the Coast Guard.

An event to bestow the honors is scheduled for October.

US Coast Guard patrol spots Chinese naval ships off Alaska’s Aleutian Islands

A U.S. Coast Guard cutter on routine patrol in the Bering Sea came across several Chinese military ships in international waters but within the U.S. exclusive economic zone, officials said.

The crew detected three vessels approximately 124 miles north of the Amchitka Pass in the Aleutian Islands, the Coast Guard said in a statement Wednesday. A short time later, a helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak spotted a fourth ship approximately 84 miles north of the Amukta Pass.

The encounters occurred July 6 and 7, according to the Coast Guard .

All four of the People’s Republic of China vessels were “transiting in international waters but still inside the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone,” which extends 200 nautical miles from the U.S. shoreline, the statement said. The Chinese vessels told the Coast Guard their purpose for being there was “freedom of navigation operations.”

The Coast Guard said there is no requirement for foreign nations to proactively contact a country before entering their Exclusive Economic Zone and in this case said the Chinese vessels responded when the Coast Guard reached out on radio.

The Coast Guard did not respond to questions about how long the Chinese ships were in the Exclusive Economic Zone but said the Kimball and an air crew monitored them until they transited south of the Aleutian Islands and into the North Pacific Ocean.

The sighting of the ships came a week after the Chinese navy began its annual joint patrol with the Russian navy in the Pacific Ocean, the U.S. Naval Institute reported July 5. It said the patrol is scaled down from previous years, including last August when more than 10 ships from China and Russia formed a flotilla off Alaska.

In September 2022 , the Kimball spotted several ships from China and Russia in the Bering Sea. And in September 2021, Coast Guard cutters in the Bering Sea and North Pacific Ocean encountered Chinese ships about 50 miles off the Aleutian Islands. The Coast Guard said there was a similar incident in 2023 that the Navy responded to.

“Our military needs to be ready for increasing Chinese, and joint Chinese and Russian military activity near Alaska’s coast,” U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan, an Alaska Republican, said in a statement after being briefed on the Chinese presence.

“I also met yesterday morning with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and specifically raised this issue — how America must be much more prepared for the increasing activity in the Arctic, and to also let Alaskans know that our military is on the job protecting our state and our country,” Sullivan said.

The U.S. military routinely conducts what it calls freedom of navigation operations in disputed waters in Asia that China claims as its own, deploying Navy ships to sail through waterways such as the South China Sea. The U.S. says freedom of navigation in the waters is in America’s national interest.

Aaron Davenport, a retired senior Coast Guard officer who’s now with Rand, said when the Chinese vessels describe what they’re doing as “freedom of navigation operations,” it’s essentially China flexing its muscles by showing up in a part of the world that the U.S. considers part of its sphere of influence.

He said it’s similar to how the U.S. has deployed Coast Guard or other ships to the Taiwan Strait to uphold freedom of navigation and support American allies in the region — with the important distinction that the Aleutian Islands are clearly part of the U.S. The Taiwan Strait separates the island democracy of Taiwan from China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory.
