Nest Sparrow Hybrid Review 2024: Universal Comfort for Couples

The Nest Sparrow Hybrid is a comfortable and accommodating bed with some novel features that are very appealing to couples. Could this be a mattress solution for you and your partner?

Nest Bedding makes a handful of interesting mattresses, including the affordable and flippable hybrid Raven mattress and the affordable, all-foam Quail mattress . The Sparrow Hybrid , formerly known as the Alexander Signature, is Nest's flagship mattress because nearly everyone who tries it finds it comfortable, thanks to its fluffy, pillow top feel. It comes in multiple firmness options so it should suit almost everyone's preferences. 

First impressions of the Nest Sparrow Hybrid mattress

I have a pretty long history with this particular mattress. When I first started testing mattresses back in 2018, the original Nest Alexander Hybrid was one of the first beds I ever unboxed, and my first impression was that it was the most comfortable bed I had ever tried, and at the time, it probably was.

After the team and I tested it out and reviewed it I was able to take it home and replace my old, worn-out mattress I had used for well over a decade and my sleep quality improved drastically. I eventually replaced the mattress with a Purple after moving apartments, and then a few years later Nest updated the mattress and rebranded it to the Sparrow Hybrid. 

When we received the new Sparrow Hybrid, it was nearly identical to the old model, with one notable exception, which I will cover later in this review. It is just as comfortable and just as accommodating and my opinion on it remains very positive after the rebrand.

Is the Nest Sparrow Hybrid mattress right for you?

For anyone looking for a mattress that you are almost guaranteed to find comfortable, I think the Sparrow Hybrid is a great choice. I also think this is one of the best mattresses available online for couples because it has a feature I don't see with other brands. When checking out (in king or California king sizes), you can actually choose a split firmness, and that split happens internally. Many couples who have vastly different preferences on firmness wind up getting two twin XL mattresses and fitting them on a king-size frame. This is a fine solution, but there winds up with a gap between the beds, which isn't ideal, or you can get an adjustable air chamber mattress like Sleep Number or the Saatva Solaire . 

With the Sparrow, you can have one side be firm and one side be medium or soft or any combination of the three without a gap, which makes this bed an excellent choice for couples.

Nest Sparrow Hybrid firmness and feel

Sparrow hybrid feel.

The feel of the Nest Sparrow Hybrid is one that I would describe as almost universally comfortable. I can't say that every single person will find this bed comfy because everyone is different with different preferences, but I have a difficult time imagining a person who disagrees that this bed is comfortable. 

It has a responsive, fluffy pillow top feel that is simultaneously supportive and plush, especially in the medium and plush models. I think it is similar to what you might find at a nice hotel, and I would describe it as very accommodating. Some sleepers are looking for a more specific type of feel, like dense, sink-in memory foam or responsive latex, but if you aren't married to a specific type of mattress feel, I think you'll really enjoy the feel of the Sparrow. I slept on this mattress at home for a long time and never had any issues with the comfort.

Sparrow Hybrid firmness

The firmness of the Sparrow Hybrid will depend on which model you choose when you are checking out online. It comes in a plush, a medium and a firm model and the models are appropriately named. The plush model is medium-soft on our firmness scale and will be ideal for strict side sleepers looking for maximum pressure relief.

The medium model we found to actually be slightly softer than a medium and not significantly firmer than the plush model, which means it will still be a great option for side sleepers but will be more appropriate for some combination sleepers. 

The firm model is the only option I would recommend for back and stomach sleepers because it is around a medium-firm. 

One novel feature on the Sparrow Hybrid that I mentioned earlier is with the king sizes, you can get a split firmness internally, so if you are sharing this mattress and one of you wants a plush mattress and one of you wants a firmer bed, you can do that with a single mattress. Usually, the solution to that problem is to get two twin XL mattresses or get a mattress with adjustable firmness like Sleep Number or the Saatva Solaire. 

Nest Sparrow Hybrid construction

The Sparrow mattress is a hybrid, which means its primary support layer is pocketed coils. Hybrid beds tend to be more durable and supportive over the lifespan of a mattress, especially for heavier individuals and coils provide more bounce and airflow as well. There are plenty of sleepers who prefer foam mattresses because they are lighter, easier to move and provide better motion isolation and all-foam beds from Nest are the Finch and the Quail . 

Above the six-inch-thick layer of edge-reinforced pocketed coils, there is a thin layer of high-density transition foam. Above the transition foam is a three-inch-thick layer of "Energex" foam which is a responsive, neutral foam that most sleepers find comfortable. The final layer is a two-inch-thick quilted cover that is filled with memory foam. 

One might think that with memory foam at the topmost layer, the Sparrow Hybrid would have more of a memory foam feel, but thanks to the coils and another responsive foam layer the construction adds up to the accommodating, responsive pillow-top feel that is incredibly comfortable. 

Nest Sparrow Hybrid performance

Edge support.

The edge support of a mattress refers to how well the perimeter of the bed holds up under pressure. If a mattress has poor edge support, if you end up sleeping near the perimeter it can feel like you are going to roll off the mattress. 

The perimeter coils on the Nest Sparrow Hybrid are reinforced with a thick gauge coil, and in our testing, we found the edge support to be very good. I also slept on this mattress for over a year and never had an issue with the edge support, which only makes this mattress more compelling for couples.

Motion isolation

Motion isolation is another factor important for couples because a bed with poor motion isolation can wake you up if your partner tosses and turns throughout the night. 

In our testing of the Nest Sparrow, we found the motion isolation to be pretty average. The coils and responsive foams make this bed not perform as well as beds like Tempur-Pedic , and if you are a light sleeper, you might wake up more often on this mattress than others, but I don't see it being a dealbreaker. 

Temperature regulation

There are no construction elements of the Nest Sparrow Hybrid that are active cooling, despite what the brand says online. Having slept on this bed for a long time I did find that I slept kinda warm some nights in the summer when I didn't want to run the air conditioning, but for the majority of the time I had no temperature issues and would describe it as temperature neutral.

Having watched mattress prices for over six years now I would say the Nest Sparrow Hybrid is reasonably priced, after a discount. Even before the discount this mattress is competitively priced when compared to other pillow top hybrid beds we regard highly like the Winkbed and the Saatva Classic .

All Nest Bedding mattresses come with an extra-long trial period of 365 nights in comparison to the usual standard of 100 nights. So you have quite a while to really test it out and see if you like it. 

Keep in mind that it can take a month or longer for your body to adjust to a new mattress, no matter how well-suited it is to your sleeping preferences. The trial period begins the day the mattress is delivered, not when you actually start sleeping on it.

If even after swapping the comfort foam the mattress still isn't working for you within the trial period you can return it and get a refund. This refund as of writing should be free but that may change in the future. Most brands that have return fees charge only $99.

All Nest mattresses are backed by a Lifetime warranty, which is above and beyond the usual online mattress standard of ten years.

Like pretty much any warranty that lasts longer than 10 years, this warranty is tiered and offers more protection in the first 10 years in comparison to the years after but Nest has an additional policy with that mattress that will help extend the life of the mattress.

The Nest Sparrow Hybrid, Owl Hybrid, Finch Natural and Starling Contour mattresses all have a design where the top comfort layer of foam is easily removable and replaceable. With the Lifetime Renewal Exchange Program , if your Nest mattress starts to get too soft or the foam starts to degrade, you can get a new layer of foam sent to you for free to help extend the life of the bed. 

I think this is a really nice feature, and more brands should offer a similar replacement scheme. We have seen similar construction styles from Leesa and Helix that would allow for a similar program, but we haven't seen any other brand offer it yet.

I think the Nest Sparrow Hybrid is an excellent mattress for anyone seeking an accommodating, supremely comfortable bed with the ability to pick and choose your firmness profile. I think it is a great choice for single people, but it is an even better choice for couples in my opinion. 

Because it has such a universally comfortable feel, it should be very easy for two people to agree on the feel and because of the internal split firmness and excellent edge support, it is an even more compelling option for co-sleeping. Couples looking for a new mattress should definitely strongly consider the Nest Sparrow Hybrid.

I flew economy on American, Delta, and United. The flights were strikingly similar but with small quirks that may help you choose which airline to fly.

• I recently flew in domestic economy on American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines.
• Each has pros and cons, but are all competitive. I'll continue to book based on price and convenience.
• Differences in comfort and service among the airlines may influence other travelers' choices.

The US has three "Big 3" mainline carriers : American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines.

Frequent flyers commonly have a favorite, whether for the fares, on-time rate, route options, or the airline's loyalty program.

I have historically favored Delta because it's what my family always flew growing up. But these days, I usually book based on price and convenience rather than loyalty. (If you're looking for the best airline for free upgrades or point redemptions, this isn't the article for you).

As someone whose job often involves flying on airlines and comparing them, I recently pit the Big 3 against each other by flying each on the same ticket type, on similar routes, and all within a reasonable timeframe.

What I found won't change how I approach booking flights because the experiences on each airline were similar enough overall, but I can imagine the small comfort and service differences could sway other travelers.

My three domestic tickets were for basic economy on flights of about four hours, giving me the most apples-to-apples comparison.

In mid-May, I flew on a Delta A220 from New York's LaGuardia Airport to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and returned on an American Boeing 737-800 .

My United Boeing 737 Max 8 flight was from LaGuardia to Denver International Airport in early July.

I book basic economy because I like to save money where I can, and the unbundled fares are perfect for my style of travel.

I'm a low-maintenance budget traveler who usually only has a carry-on. I mostly don't like checking luggage because I'm impatient and don't want to wait for it at bag claim.

There's also the risk that my bag won't reach my final destination, but I mostly trust the airlines — and I have an AirTag for backup.

However, if you're worried, Department of Transportation data says American and United had the worst mishandled luggage rates in 2023, with 0.76 and 0.73 bags mishandled per 100 bags enplaned, respectively. Delta was the best-performing of the three, with a rate of 0.47.

In all cases, the ticket can be upgraded to regular coach for things like an assigned seat and no change fees. I'd recommend paying up if you want a little more control over your reservation.

Out of the three discount options, American and Delta often offer more bang for your buck than United's more restrictive basic fares.

The point of basic economy is to lure in price-sensitive travelers (like me) with a fare that only requires you to pay for what you need. It's basically the low-cost model but with the perks of mainline cabins , like inflight entertainment, free snacks, and reclining seats.

Unlike American and Delta, United made its offer as barebones as possible by not allowing carry-on bags at all.

Except for most international routes, anything more than a personal item on United has to be checked. Delta and American allow a carry-on and a personal item for free.

Meanwhile, the seat rule is the same across the board — you pay extra to reserve one. Otherwise, you'll get a random seat at check-in — and I ended up with a middle seat on every flight.

United's policy required me to spend an extra $40 to check my carry-on, which isn't ideal and could be a dealbreaker if a competitor is cheaper.

For example, a one-way basic economy flight from LaGuardia to Chicago in mid-October is $56 on American, Delta, and United, according to Google Flights. Other dates show similarly close fares.

After the added fee and hassle of checking a bag on United, I'd book one of the other two by probably flipping a coin since I simply don't care about status.

While the no carry-on bothered me, it's not a problem for everyone. United earns points for its more tech-savvy cabin.

The United plane I flew on was retrofitted with the airline's enhanced "United Next" cabin that it unveiled in 2021.

It offers the regular bells and whistles you'll find on most American and Delta narrowbodies, but you can also connect Bluetooth headphones to the seatback screens.

It was a much better option than using regular earbuds, especially if you're stuck with the scratchy airline-provided ones.

You'll get a similar cabin layout on Delta, but without Bluetooth, unless you're in first class on an A321neo.

Delta's Bluetooth is not available in coach. United is the only US airline to offer it cabin-wide , fitting Bluetooth on some 100 planes.

The airline expects to roll it out on 800 aircraft by 2032.

American has installed seatback tablet holders instead of screens. It makes me an oddball, but I actually prefer it that way.

I am addicted to competitive reality television shows like Big Brother and Survivor, and they're my go-to on flights. The tablet holder was perfect for my taste, but I doubt I'm the popular opinion.

If you rely on seatback content, Delta and United may be your better bets.

However, according to American's website , some of its single-aisle planes, including some A319s and the transcontinental A321T, have screens.

In my experience, besides the screen difference, the Big 3 largely offer the same level of comfort and service in their narrowbody cabins.

Most of the airlines' updated Airbus and Boeing narrowbodies have headrests, tray tables, seatback pockets, power ports, free snacks and drinks, and decent legroom and seat padding.

According to their websites, all three offer the standard 30-31 inches of pitch in regular coach, which is always plenty of space for my 5'3" self. Taller travelers may consider upgrading to an extra legroom seat, though.

I also had no customer service issues, with all of the airlines' airport agents and flight attendants being equally helpful and friendly . Granted, that's not always been the case in my years of flying, but bad apples exist at every airline, so I don't put much thought into that.

Delta has the best internet, but all of the Big 3 participate in a T-Mobile plan that gives free WiFi to eligible customers.

As a remote worker , I fly mainline airlines partly for the WiFi because I can access it fully free with my T-Mobile phone number. In my experience, the connection is mostly consistent across the board, and I could stream with no problem.

If you don't have T-Mobile, Delta is the best for internet as it continues to add unlimited free WiFi for loyalty members on its planes (you just need to make a free account).

American offers very limited free internet, while United offers complimentary messaging.

United's domestic WiFi costs $8 for MileagePlus members and $10 otherwise. Messaging is free and works on apps like iMessage and WhatsApp.

Meanwhile, American does offer ad-powered free internet, but my flight was limited to just 20 minutes.

American's strategy is likely to show people what the WiFi is like and entice them to buy a flight pass, but the up-to-$20 price for internet on my flight may be a little steep for some travelers.

Of course, there are some outliers, as all three still fly older jets that haven't been retrofitted with updated cabins.

I specifically flew the updated cabins on American, Delta, and United's single-aisle Airbus and Boeing aircraft. However, all three still have some dated narrowbodies that don't offer all of the latest perks.

According to their respective websites, Delta's Boeing 717s lack seatback screens, as do many of United's 737-900s and 757-300s and select cabins on its Airbus planes (minus the A321neo). And you won't find power on all of American's Airbus narrowbodies.

While this will likely change as airlines continue to retrofit their fleets, I suggest you always check the airline's website outlining its fleet to see what you can expect before booking. The plane type will be displayed at booking and on your reservation.

Still, you'll more likely than not be on a retrofit plane with enough comforts to survive a four or so-hour flight.

I got a headrest and a comfortable enough seat on all three airlines' planes despite getting stuck in the middle seat on each.

Plus, every flight was perfectly on time. In fact, all three scored an on- time rate of at least 80% in 2023 — Delta at about 84% and the other two both just over 80%. United got roughly the same rate as in 2022, with Delta and American both improving year over year.

According to global travel data provider OAG , that's considered good punctuality in the airline industry. But remember, delays and cancellations can happen to any airline at any time, so sometimes it is just luck.

And if you're on Delta's A220 plane, you may want to visit the lavatory.

The aft lavatory on Delta's A220 fleet has a full-sized window . I'd consider it the best window seat onboard, and we aviation enthusiasts have dubbed it a "loo with a view."

You won't find the unique window on other US A220 carriers like low-cost airlines Breeze or JetBlue — though the latter has better legroom than any of the Big 3.

Overall, my recent flights gave me more confidence in American and United after previous mediocre experiences.

Delta consistently has the best on-time performance of the Big 3 year over year. It's, personally, rarely done me wrong. However, the other two have been hit-or-miss over the years, but customer-focused improvements are evidently working.

American has proven it isn't the inconsistent airline I used to avoid, while United's new domestic product is easily competitive but still lacks some freebies like the WiFi and carry-on offered by its rivals.

My main hesitation would be the route. I'll almost always pay more or go out of my way for a nonstop.

I live closest to New York-JFK and LaGuardia, so booking American and Delta for convenience , even if it costs more, makes sense since United has much fewer flight options at both NYC airports.

I'd also prefer not to travel all the way to United's Newark, New Jersey, hub for a flight. Again, it's case-by-case, but United's fare would need to be stupidly cheap.

And remember, we're talking domestic flights here. International is an entire other ballgame.

For those still stuck between one or more of the three for a particular economy flight, here's my best advice on how to choose.

Firstly, if you care most about punctuality, the data says book Delta. Plus, the airline is consistently awarded for its premium-focused service and comfort, so it's just a safe bet — but you may see higher fares because of it.

United's upgraded cabin is just as nice as Delta's , and I'd argue it's actually better with the Bluetooth option. But you'll want to pay up for at least regular economy to get a carry-on for domestic flights.

While I've had my issues with American in the past, the airline has fully grown on me. It is often among the cheaper options , but most of its narrowbodies don't have a seatback screen.

You'll still get entertainment on American but on a handheld device. If you're like me, who watches content on a personal device, I'd say that's a win-win.

“It’s Zen, But Make It Technical”—Mordecai’s Ludovico Bruno Makes Comfort Clothes With a Sophisticated Mien

As brand names go, Mordecai might seem a rather odd choice, unless The Royal Tenenbaums is your favorite movie and Mordecai the falcon (whose plumage turned white after a kidnapping trauma) is a character you have a soft spot for. On a more scholarly level, Mordecai’s etymology has ancient Babylonese origins of auspicious meaning. So what’s the story?

Shrugging off any erudite excursus into history books, designer Ludovico Bruno, the Italian menswear label’s founder, said it’s just a name he liked. Yet after some prodding, he concedes that he’s a Wes Anderson stan, and that it felt like a good omen to name his collection after a bird whose “lightness and stealth exactitude of flight seems to sharp-glide over the heaviness of life. I certainly wouldn’t have referenced a fluttering feather, carried by the wind with no direction.”

Bruno launched his menswear brand in 2023. After studies at Pratt Institute, he was offered jobs at 3.1 Phillip Lim and Edward Buchanan’s Sansovino 6 before embarking on a decade-long stint at Moncler. There he worked on the Gamme Rouge and Gamme Bleu lines before they transitioned into Moncler Genius, where he was head designer. During his Moncler years he collaborated with a string of A-list creatives, from Giambattista Valli to Hiroshi Fujiwara to Thom Browne, whose “almost obsessive” tailoring standards had a strong influence on his design. When Browne was Moncler Gamme Bleu’s creative director, he and Bruno experimented on ways of adapting the sartorial to the technicalities of the piuminos, using high-end flannels or light wools and introducing new padded shapes, more fitted and sophisticated than any standard puffer.

After Moncler he went to work for Yoon Ahn of Ambush; then it was time to launch his own line. “I wanted to find an alternative both to streetwear and to the technicalities of sportswear,” he says. “I also wanted something to wear that suited my personal style, a way of dressing much more leisurely, comfortable, and easy to travel in but always adequate.” Bruno’s love of traveling is on par with his commitment to fitness; he trains religiously every day, and he’s adept in martial arts. His physique isn’t of the ephebic variety in the least. “I couldn’t wear any of today’s skinny menswear propositions even if I tried,” he jokes.

His line combines technical elements of high-performance sportswear, memories of ways of dressing he has encountered in his travels, the cool of streetwear, and some formal polish. While volumes are generous, fabrications and construction are all about lightness, to allow functional layering and versatility; the silhouette “has the shape of an 8, with neck, wrists and ankles as points of definition,” he explains.

Ponchos, stoles, capes, and kimonos are staples in the Mordecai wardrobe, often lightly padded and made of ultra-light cotton nylon. In the spring 2025 collection, presented in Milan during Men’s fashion week last month, standouts included a series of ample kimono coats inspired by gym robes, made in featherlight leather lasered and treated to replicate terry cloth textures. Cotton waffle coexists with three-layered membranes and light performance padding; zippered net segments regulating body temperature can be manipulated to change the volume from round-shaped to kimono. Garments are mostly rendered in calming gradients of white. There’s something confidently centered about Mordecai’s look. Says Bruno: “It’s Zen, but make it technical.”
