Best Summer Weekend

Sailing is a very social sport and attracts great people. You will have fun, meet other sailors and discover new friends.

Our student instructor ratio is 4 to 1. And we normally teach between 5 and 10 boats every weekend. So you will be part of a group of 20 to 40 students who are all learning to sail. At the end of each day, we encourage you to hang out and have a cold drink. This is when you can really savor the sailing vibe, meet more people and develop a great love for this sport.

After graduating from Basic Sailing, you will be ready for your next steps. One of the best options is to join Manhattan Yacht Club. This will connect you with the harbor’s largest group of sailors and you will have something to do every weekend for the rest of the summer. MYC has great cruising and racing programs, plus a floating clubhouse in the harbor.

You can also sign up for advanced courses such as Basic Coastal Cruising. Then in winter, you can join your fellow graduates at “Manhattan Caribbean Week” which is one week of fun, sun and sailing in the British Virgin Islands.

It all starts with you here and now. Just sign up before the course you want sells out.

We have 2 summer meet-up locations where students connect with their instructors.

  • Jersey City MEET UP – This is our headquarters and home of the Manhattan Yacht Club, the largest sailing organization in New York Harbor. Our fleet is based at Liberty Harbor Marina. We have beautiful decks overlooking the water, plus picnic tables, grass, flagpoles, games, tents, BBQs & a sailing atmosphere where you can relax with new friends before and after sailing.
  • Manhattan MEET UP – Our second meet-up location is in Lower Manhattan at the Occulus. This is where you meet one of our instructors who will escort you across the river on the PATH where you will discover huge marinas filled with sailboats. This is NY Harbor’s sailing capital! It’s an easy and short 8 minute walk from the PATH station to the Manhattan Yacht Club.

In winter, we teach in the Caribbean with most classes in the British Virgin Islands. This is where you can enroll in higher level courses such as Basic Coastal Cruising, Bareboat Chartering and Catamaran Chartering.

Lake Michigan sailors describe dramatic man overboard rescue during storm

  • Published: Jul. 18, 2024, 7:10 p.m.

Chicago to Mackinac race

LAKE MICHIGAN - There’s being in the right place at the right time - and then there’s clearly being prepared for the unexpected.

A man overboard incident during last weekend’s Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac sailboat competition led to a dramatic 20-minute rescue amid a storm that lashed Lake Michigan with some big waves and 46 mph winds.

Boat crews worked together to rescue the sailor who’d been tossed into the big lake at night. Luckily, he was prepared, too. He had a self-inflating floatation device, an emergency beacon and a strobe light.

“He was lit up like a Christmas tree,” said the owner of the boat who facilitated the rescue.

Race organizers gathered all the details of the on-the-water drama. Here’s what they shared:

The tense moments began Saturday night when the severe storms were rolling across Lake Michigan. It was a threat mostly to members of the contest’s Racing Division, which had left Chicago’s Navy Pier earlier in the day for the 333-mile trek to Mackinac Island. The oldest annual freshwater race in the world is known as America’s Offshore Challenge.

Shawn Dougherty, a crew member aboard the Callisto, was helping take the spinnaker down during the storm when a large gust of wind hit the boat and he was knocked into the water.

Dougherty was not tethered to the Callisto. But he was wearing a personal flotation device and a bag that had an Automatic Identification System emergency beacon that allows others to track his position via a distress signal. He also had a good strobe light, a knife and a whistle, race officials said.

Callisto’s owner, Jim Murray, said he saw Dougherty fall into the lake. Crew members hit their man overboard button, which locked in Dougherty’s location for rescuers.

An untimely rudder issue meant the Callisto was not immediately able to return to where Dougherty had fallen into the water.

“As soon as the man overboard (MOB) distress call went out, at least three boats in the vicinity responded to offer assistance, including the Santa Cruz 52 Madcap owned by John and Marian Hoskins ,” a race spokesperson said.

At the time Dougherty went into the water, Hoskins was down below on his boat monitoring the radio - a safety habit of his during bad weather.

“Majority of the time it’s a boring job, but it’s important to have that designated person on board, exactly for this reason,” Hoskins said. “The lesson here is I was ready for this call. We quickly established we were the closest boat to offer assistance and my crew jumped into action.”

The Madcap’s crew lowered its sails and motored in the overboard sailor’s direction. The beacon and strobe made him hard to miss.

Dougherty was scooped up about 20 minutes after he fell in the lake.

“Everyone knew exactly what to do. Who’s the spotter, who’s operating the searchlight, who’s in charge of the lifesling. We had our best driver on the helm, so the approach was nothing to worry about,” Hoskins said. “We were able to clearly communicate with Shawn in the water and could tell he was calm, he was not injured and very much in control, which helped to release our tension.

“It was a textbook recovery, thanks to the great preparation and coordinated teamwork.”

Because of the dicey weather conditions, Dougherty ended up staying on the Madcap for the rest of the race, though the rules prevented him from acting as a crew member on board.

It was Dougherty’s third Chicago-to-Mackinac race. “Every single event we go through the same preparation and practice,” he said. “We do so much racing together as a team but we practice this [scenario] over and over again.”

Wind conditions made this year’s running an extremely fast race, with a new record being set by Maverick’s crew.

Maverick racing by the Mackinac Bridge

The Maverick broke a 22-year record in the 115th Chicago Yacht Club Race To Mackinac Presented By Wintrust. Chicago Yacht Club Race To Mackinac

But the rescue effort also earned a reward - and lots of cheers once all the crews reached Mackinac Island. Madcap’s crew was awarded the Arthur B. Hansen rescue medal by US Sailing. It recognizes not only outstanding seamanship but good situational awareness that results in a sailor’s rescue.

“We do our best to ensure the sailors and boats are extremely well-equipped and prepared,” said Winn Soldani, chair of the 115th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust. He commended both crews for how they handled the situation. “From required Safety at Sea seminars, man overboard drills and an extensive list of equipment – this is exactly why all of it is worth it.”

“There’s a reason offshore sailors get along so well,” Callisto’s Murray said. “When you go to sea, you’re putting your trust in not only your crewmates, but all the people that you’re racing against.

“Madcap was incredible. You can’t thank somebody enough for something like that. It is one of those things that’s very heartwarming about the sport. And I think it separates sailing from other sports; that this really is a big family out there when you’re on the water together.”

The First Annual Lenny Shabes Sailing Festival is in the Books

By: Zeke Quezada, ASA American Sailing Vacations , Flotillas

I strolled along the sandy shores of Anegada as a Caribbean squall swept over the island. The rain fell heavily, yet the sudden chill was oddly refreshing. The scene around me resembled something from a travel brochure.

Another American sailor who had joined us for the Lenny Shabes Sailing Festival flotilla approached me on the deserted beach. His floppy hat shielded his face from the downpour.

As we passed each other, he grinned. “It doesn’t get better than this.”

If there were words to capture the essence of this flotilla, it would be those simple yet profound words.

Sailing has a way of making any moment perfect. On that beach in Anegada, the entire journey seemed to find its definition.

Fourteen boats, 85 guests, and numerous islands to explore—this was what the Lenny Shabes Sailing Festival was all about. It celebrated sailing while honoring the legacy of ASA Founder Lenny Shabes. When a group of sailors gathers, you can imagine the tales spun over rum drinks. Whether on catamaran decks or sandy beaches, we all became part of the ASA Family in the British Virgin Islands.

The Raft Up

Our lead captain from the American Sailing School Sailing Virgins organized a sailor’s paradise—a raft where our boats formed a floating alley off Prickly Pear. The music blared, and swimmers danced inventively in the water. The jovial antics of sailors reached their peak as the Rum Runner arrived, elevating the energy on every boat and the water itself. Grills were fired up, flotation devices tossed into the water, and the biggest open-water pool party many of us had ever seen ensued.

sailor yacht club & sailing school

The Regatta

Fifteen Hobie Cats set sail to compete in the inaugural Lenny Shabes Hobie Cat Regatta. While the winner was uncertain, everyone was too engrossed in the fun to mind the outcomes. Rumor had it the PhD in Meteorology took the race, but no sailor would admit to losing. The Bitter End Yacht Club hosted the race and a bonfire party that stretched into the night. Dinner, drinks, and dancing on the beach solidified friendships that felt lifelong after racing Hobie Cats together.

The Willy T

No trip to the British Virgin Islands is complete without a visit to the Willy T. People leaped off the back, singing and dancing as the day melted away. Our day began with a floating party aboard the lead American Sailing Catamaran and ended with farewells under a full moon, accompanied by a small glow party.

The Lenny Shabes Sailing Festival in the British Virgin Islands marked the first-ever celebration of American Sailing’s founder, Lenny Shabes. At its core, the festival embodied the spirit of sailing and camaraderie among sailors. It was more than just an event; it was a gathering of our sailing family, a heartfelt tribute to the sport we cherish, and a joyous celebration of the sea.

Sports, art and science day camps around Zurich and Zug

Summer is almost here and summer day camps will make the holiday experience fun and educational for your kids, day camps in zurich, spring and summer is almost here and all parents are wondering which activities they should enroll their young ones in.

We bring to you the most requested sports camps on Momizen and created a list for a large range of hobbies and interests, including sports, science and robotics, as well as artistic and creative camps.

The summer camps will not only free-up the hands of parents after the closing of schools in the Zurich region, but, above all, will help children have an unforgettable summer full of educational experiences, new friends and endless play!

Is Summer Camp Right For Your Child?

Before deciding if summer camp is right for your children, ask them how they would like to spend their time over the summer holidays.  It is always important to know if your children would like to deepen their knowledge on a specific skill such as art o r theatre, if they would like to catch-up on other skills such as languages or sports, and if they are willing to participate in a structured program throughout the day.  After taking into consideration your children's preferences, it would be great to build a short list with options that fit their age-group, family schedule and budget, and decide together.

3 Types of Summer Camp for Kids & Teens

When choosing a summer camp there are different types of summer camps to consider.  Depending on your location and the preferred type of learning for your children, you can choose among a virtual camp, a day camp or an overnight camp.

Virtual Camp

A virtual camp is often a suitable match for children that are not able to attend a physical class or commute to the camp facility.  It is also a great way for children to learn new skills from the comfort of their own home.  Virtual camps include art workshops, programming, language classes to name a few skills, and have a set starting and ending time.  It is still possible to connect and make friends during virtual classes as children have the chance to meet like-minded peers online.

A day camp often combines indoor and outdoor activities throughout the day, while children return home in the afternoon.  While focusing on a specific skill in the morning, there are opportunities to enjoy outdoor play in the afternoons.  A day camp offers time away from the parents throughout the day and provides the opportunity to socialise on a one-to-one as well as group level.  Most day camps around Zurich offer a late pick-up for an extra fee.   As most camps include lunch, several do not have facilities to prepare food and children are requested to bring their own packed lunch.

Overnight or Residential Camp

At residential camps children can stay away from home one to eight weeks.  Residential or sleep-away  camps often focus on a sport or outdoor activities in combination with a preferred skill such as music, languages, art and programming .

Through games and physical exercises, a child develops strength, speed, flexibility and endurance while achieving motor development and proper neuromuscular coordination.

Children who play sports develop self-confidence and improved social skills. Sports and athletic activities reinforce principles such as discipline, cooperation, noble rivalry, acceptance of defeat, all while sharpening the spirit.   Children also learn to communicate effectively with others and at the same time they have fun. Sports also improve a child’s self-esteem.

While there is a program throughout the day, residential camps offer relaxing time so children can socialise and connect.   The age groups for residential camp begin as of 7 years old, but it is always important to consider the readiness of the children to stay away from home for at least a week.    Separation anxiety among children that are not ready to be away from home, may be an obstacle in having fun and immersing in the summer camp experience.

Most importantly, summer camp is about having fun, building friendships and creating life-long memories.

Day camps around zurich.

Our list includes a wide range of interests so that you can find the right camp that fits for your kids.  Check out our top providers in these categories:

  • 12th August - 16th August 2024

Full and half-days are available, plus extra care available.

In the region of Zurich those who enjoy one-on-one sports, tennis is a great choice. Tennis is a sport that teaches children self-control and concentration. Among other things, tennis can teach a child

  • responsibility
  • social skills and
  • healthy competition.

It also boosts a child's self-control, concentration, self-esteem and self-confidence while helping them have patience on and off the field. Also, tennis is a sport that enhances the mood for noble rivalry and at the same time discipline, elements that result in the improvement of their learning ability.

Padel Arena

If tennis is too mainstream for you or your child you should definitely try out padel. Padel is a fun mix of tennis and squash and it is played with a small racket and a soft tennis ball inside a closed glass room! Children from 4 years old and their families can play together during all days of the week. Padel Arena offers a camp and a junior academy for young learners aged 10 to 18. After training everyone can relax and have a snack at the comfy bistro.

Tennis Center Horgen

Another great tennis centre is The Horgen Tennis Centre. Here children from 3,5 years old can train on tennis, have individual lessons, join the holiday camps or throw a children's birthday party.

Football on the other hand is a team sport with many health and social benefits. Playing football can help a child acquire a strong and flexible muscular system as well as strong bones, due to the strength and flexibility exercises included in the training. Shots and dribbles of the ball develop agility and coordination. Running and sprinting guarantees very good physical condition. Playing on a soccer team develops the child's ability to work and interact with other children as part of a team. To win a football game, the whole team must communicate and work together. Sailing, A Part of Eastern Shore History by Regina Oliver

July 16, 2024 by Spy Desk 1 Comment

Share

Rock Hall Yacht Club hosted their 84th Annual Log Canoe Regatta on the Chester River Saturday and Sunday, July 6 and 7. The weather barely cooperated, but the race committee, the boats, their crews and their skippers were determined to finish the course. Chester River Yacht Club and Corsica River Yacht Club’s Log Canoe Regatta is July 13 and 14.

Last week, with temperatures reaching 90 degrees plus, humidity pushing the heat index to extremes, winds at about five knots, the starting gun sounded at 10:00 a.m.  Seven log canoes crossed the starting marker just east of Lawyers Cove, Langford Creek. Winds would rest and gust again, die out, pick up. Saturday and Sunday’s airflow did not make for the swift, powerful show of speed and agility one sees on YouTube videos of these races. But the majesty of the betoken boats emerged nonetheless.

Since 1859 on the Miles River for the Douglas Cup, a Log Canoe Regatta has been a signature event at a handful of yacht clubs of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Watching their distinctive sails open to the wind and their hulls slide at the surface of the water is watching living history. Miles River Yacht Club’s website chronicling the sport indicates these boats “were originally…for commercial oystering.” The sport grew out of the need to race one’s catch to buy boats and “this racing tradition continues with more than a dozen canoes – most built in the 1800s or early 1900s and listed on the National Historic Register.” The Bay herself is the solitary home of this type of regatta and this specific canoe.

“Part of the attraction of racing on these very special boats,” Pete Lesher, Chief Historian at Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum says, “is that we understand these boats date back to the 1880s. There is a sense that we are connected to and perpetuating a deep Eastern Shore tradition.”

Some of the owners and skippers of these boats are members of families owning the log canoes that extend back generations. But the crews themselves have changed and evolved over the decades, with the sport’s popularity soaring and waning. Skippers and their crews must practice and prepare for each regatta and Mr. Lesher indicates, “a culture develops unique to each boat.”

“If you’ve crewed on one of these boats,” notes Chip Lausman of Rock Hall, “then you know they simply don’t sail like other boats. Their tremendous sails and long, narrow design make it particularly important to prepare for all weather. You might have strong winds, thunderstorms. Or you might have to contend with hot, sticky days like last weekend, where you drift as much as you sail.”

Most crew members come from the yacht clubs themselves, or from family members of the skippers/owners, and from friends of friends. Many are students from local colleges with rich sailing traditions, like Washington College or St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

“There are three things you look for in your crew,” notes Jim Smith of Quaker Neck, Chestertown. “First, they must have knowledge of how the sails work. Sailing experience helps tremendously. Second, it helps if the crew are younger. And third, crew members must be tough. It’s not uncommon to walk away from a race with shins banged and fingers smashed, with splinters and bruises. We sail light. This sport is not for the faint of heart.”

Connie Ranney of the Rock Hall Yacht Club School of Sailing has been part of the race committee for her club’s reggatta for years. This year she was the scorer and notes that the culture of the different boats and their crews is like any organization. Teamwork is crucial to a crew’s success and every team is different. But the camaraderie and celebration of tradition makes attending a log canoe awards ceremony unique.

“There are other regattas, and other types of sailing vessels, but the log canoe requires something special – hours and hours on the boat, a lot of effort to downrig and stow her sails and boards. When the awards ceremony at the Rock Hall yacht club this year began, we had between 50 – 80 people attend,” she explains. “The energy they bring, the celebration of the sport, it’s fabulous. Everyone chats about the results and the race, and a buzz, buzz, buzz – it’s just a very fun time at the club.”

“We may, as crew members, feel like a bunch of crazy people on a boat,” says Pete Lesher. “But there’s an understanding, and a bit of wonderment, that there were folks that were just as crazy doing this 100 years ago. We celebrate skippers and dominant boats at awards ceremonies, but you also find the connectedness to the tradition as a whole and the specialness in an individual canoe that we hope to sustain by continuing to care for and race these unique boats.”

Liz Smith of Quaker Neck notes that things are changing in the world of regattas, whether the Log Canoe or other vessels.

“When I was young,” she notes, “we lived on the water. We would get on a sunfish and sail all over the Chester River, and our mother knew if we went out somewhere and it got too late in the day, we’d call her. And she’d come pick us up. But today, sailing seems to be losing popularity all over the country. Our culture is changing, not so many young people pick up sailing like we did.”

Liz Smith is only the second woman in the history of the regatta to skipper a log canoe. She was in her teens on a boat with all men at a time when women’s empowerment was forefront in the news.

“It was the time of women’s lib,” she explains. “In those days, there were a lot of people involved in Log Canoe. There were over 20 boats sailing in these events regularly. Only seven boats came out last weekend. My hope for the future of the sport is not only that it continues, but that it retains its rich history of limited gadgetry. The rules used to be much more stringent than they are now and of course, the sport will evolve, it has to. But these boats that have been in the water since the 1880s, they’ve lasted because they’ve been respected as the unique vessels they are.”

Each club’s Log Canoe Regatta culminates with awards and a celebration of the day. The Whittum Trophy is one of several perpetual trophies awarded annually at the RHYC awards ceremony. Unlike other awards given on corrected time, this award goes to the Log Canoe who finished first in elapsed time. This year’s winner of the Whittum trophy is 22-year-old Wade Anthony of Chestertown who skippered the Silver Heel. Mr. Anthony is currently the RHYC Sailing School’s head sailing coach and has grown the RHYC racing team from just five kids to 13 young sailors over the past 3 years.

Connie Ranney notes, “this young man is a fantastic log canoe skipper and human being. He learned to sail with us and has been a fabulous junior racer on the Bay. Wade has a serious passion for the sport. He knows how to talk to anyone, is so skilled and is a real leader. He grew our own sailing team recently from just five kids to 13 young sailors last year. And it’s exciting – now he’s earned serious silver for the Chester River clubs.”
