The story starts as follows: Best New Horror A month before his deadline, Eddie Carroll ripped open a manila envelope, and a magazine called  The True North Literary Review  slipped out into his hands. Carroll was used to getting magazines in the mail, although most of them had titles like  Cemetery Dance  and specialised in horror fiction. People sent him their books, too. Piles of them cluttered his Brookline townhouse, a heap on the couch in his office, a stack by the coffee maker. Books of horror stories, all of them. 20th Century Ghost The best time to see her is when the place is almost full. There is the well-known story of the man who wanders in for a late show, and finds the vast six-hundered-seat theatre almost deserted. Halfway through the movie, he glances around and discovers her sitting next to him, in a chair that only moments before had been empty. Her witness stares at her. She turns her head and stares back. She has a nosebleed. Her eyes are wide, stricken. My head hurts, she whispers.

Pop Art My best friend when I was twelve was inflatable. His name was Arthur Roth, which also made him an inflatable Hebrew, although in our now-and-then talks about afterlife, I don’t remember that he took an especially Jewish perspective. Talk was mostly what we did – in his condition rough-house was out of the question – and the subject of death, and what might follow it, came up more than once. I think Arthur knew he would be lucky to survive high school. When I met him, he had already almost been killed a dozen times, once for every year he has been alive. The afterlife was always on his mind; also the possible lack of one.

You Will Hear The Locust Sing Francis Kay woke from dreams that were not uneasy, but exultant, and found himself an insect. He was not surprised, had thought this might happen. Or not thought: hoped, fantasised, and if not for this precise thing, then something like it. He had believed for a while he would learn to control cockroaches by telepathy, that he would master a glistening brown-backed horde of them, and send them clattering to battle for him. Or like in that movie with Vincent Price, he would only be partly transformed, his head become the head of a fly, sprouting obscene black hairs; his bulging, faceted eyes reflecting a thousand screaming faces.

Abraham’s Boys Maximilian searched for them in the carriage house and the cattle shed, even had a look in the spring house, although he knew almost at first glance he wouldn’t find them there. Rudy wouldn’t hide in a place like that, dank and chill, no windows and so no light, a place that smelled of bats. It was too much like a basement. Rudy never went in their basement back home if he could help it, was afraid the door would shut behind him, and he’d find himself trapped in the suffocating dark.

Better Than Home My father is on the television about to be thrown out of a game again. I can tell. Some of the fans watching at Tiger Stadium know too and they’re making rude, happy noises about it. They want him to be thrown out. They’re looking forward to it.

The Black Phone The fat man on the other side of the road was about to drop his groceries. He had a paper bag in each arm, and was struggling to jam a key into the back door of his van. Finney sat on the front steps of Poole’s Hardware, a bottle of grape soda in one hand, watching it all. The fat man was going to lose his groceries the moment he got the door open. The one in his left arm was already sliding free.

In The Rundown Kensington came to work. Thursday afternoon with a piercing. Wyatt noticed because she kept lowering her head and pressing a wadded-up Kleenex to her open mouth. In a short time, the little knot of tissue paper was stained a bright red. He positioned himself at the computer terminal to her left and watched her from the corners of his eyes while he busied himself with a stack of returned videos, bleeping them back into the inventory with the scanner. The next time she lifted the Kleenex to her mouth, he caught a direct glimpse of the stainless steel pin stuck through her blood-stained tongue. It was an interesting development in the Sarah Kensington story.

The Cape We were little. I was the Red Bolt and I went up the dead elm in the corner of our yard to get away from my brother, who wasn’t anyone, just himself. He had friends coming over and he wanted me not to exist, but I couldn’t help it: I existed. I had his mask and I said when his friends got there, I was going to reveal his secret identity. He said I was lunch meat, and stood below, chucking stones at me, but he threw like a girl, and I quickly climbed out of range.

Last Breath A family walked in for a look around, a little before noon, a man, a woman, and their son. They were the first visitors of the day – for all Alinger knew they would be the only visitors of the day, the museum was never busy – and he was free to give them the tour. He met them in the coatroom. the woman still stood with one foot out on the front steps, hesitant to come in any further. She was staring over her son’s head at her husband, giving him a doubting, uneasy look. The husband frowned back at her.

Dead-Wood It has been argued even trees may appear as ghosts. Reports of such manifestations are common in the literature of parapsychology. There is the famous white pine of West Belfry, Maine. It was chopped down in 1942, a towering fir with a whit smooth bark like none anyone had ever seen, and with pine needles the color of brushed steel. A tea house and inn was built on the hill where it had stood. A cold spot existed in a corner of the yellow dining room, a zone of penetrating chill, the exact diameter of the white pine’s trunk.

The Widow’s Breakfast Killian left the blanket on Gage – didn’t want it – and left Gage where he lay on a rise above a little creek bed somewhere in eastern Ohio. He didn’t stop moving for the better part of a month after that, spent most of the summer of 1935 riding the freights north and east, as if he was still headed to see Gage’s best cousin in New Hampshire. He wasn’t though. Killian would never meet her now. He didn’t know where he was headed.

My Father’s Mask On the drive to Big Cat Lake, we played a game. It was my mother’s idea. It was dusk by the time we reached the state highway, and when there was no light left in the sky, except for a splash of cold, pale brilliance in the west, she told me they were looking for me. ‘They’re playing-card people,’ she said. ‘Queens and kings. They’re so flat they can slip themselves under doors. They’ll be coming from the other direction, from the lake. Searching for us Trying to head us off. Get out of sight whenever someone comes the other way. Quick, get down. Here comes one of them now.’

Voluntary Committal I don’t know who I’m writing this for, can’t say who I expect to read it. Not the police, anyway. I don’t know what happened to my brother, and I can’t tell them where he is. Nothing I could put down here would help them find him. And anyway, this isn’t really about his disappearance… although it  does  concern a missing person, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think the two things had anything to do with each other. I have never told anyone what I know about Edward Prior, who left school one October day in 1977, and never arrived home for chili and baked potatoes with Mom.

Bobby Conroy Comes Back From The Dead Bobby didn’t know her at first. She was wounded, like him. The first thirty to arrive all got wounds. Tom Savini put them on himself. Her face was a silvery blue, her eyes sunken into darkened hollows, and where her right ear had been was a ragged-edged hole, a gaping place that revealed a lump of wet red bone. They sat a yard apart on the stone wall around the fountain, which was switched off. She had her pages balanced on one knee – three pages in all, stapled together – and was looking them over, was waiting with concentration. Bobby had read his while he was waiting in line tot go in to makeup.

The Saved Jubal Scott and Drake Hough were at the side of the road a little before noon, holding their shovels but not putting them to any use, when the foreman Tuerney came upon them. “Scott,” he said to Jubal. “You better get on now.” “I said I’d wait till three.” Tuerney pointed a finger straight up, at the low and overcast sky. The bottoms of the heavier looking clouds were streaked with a color like that of fresh turned earth. Here and there a little round fleck of snow dropped spiraling from above.

The Black Phone: The Missing Chapter An Introductory Note “The Black Phone” kept trying to spin itself out into a novel, only I wouldn’t let it. I had set out to write a short story, and I meant to finish with one? Publishers think readers don’t want short stories, only novels. But that isn’t right. Really, what readers want is a story so intense they can’t put it down, and stories like that never go on one word longer than they have to. Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and Larry McMurtry’s  Lonesome Dove  have one thing in common, that they were both as long as necessary and no longer, and it makes no difference that one was 15 pages and another was 945.

Scheherazade’s Typewriter Elena’s father had gone into the basement every night, after work, for as far back as she could remember, and did not come up until he had written three pages on the humming IBM electric typewriter he had bought in college, when he still believed he would someday be a famous novelist. He had been dead for three days before his daughter heard the typewriter in the basement, at the usual time: a burst of rapid bang-bang-banging, followed by a waiting silence, filled out only by the idiot hum if the machine.

Other information: · All stories are included in later prints. · The collection was first presented to Richard Chizmar at Cemetery Dance but he forwarded it to Peter Crowther at PS Publishing in the UK because he guessed that it could be Stephen King’s son.

Nomination(s): · Bradbury Fellowship · Bram Stocker Award for Best Fiction Collection · British Fantasy Award for Best Collection · British Fantasy Award for Best Short Story for ‘Best New Horror’

Movie: · Pop Art · Abraham’s Boys · The Black Phone

Custom-made slipcase wrapped with a woven cloth and stamped with hot foil About the Book: "An inventive collection. brave and astute." - New York Times Book Review (Editor's Choice) From New York Times bestselling author Joe Hill comes this award-winning collection of short fiction that launched him into the bright lights of the literary world's big stage fifteen years ago. Imogene is young, beautiful. and dead, waiting in the Rosebud Theater one afternoon in 1945. Francis was human once, but now he's an eight-foot-tall locust, and everyone in Calliphora will tremble when they hear him sing. John is locked in a basement stained with the blood of half a dozen murdered children, and an antique telephone, long since disconnected, rings at night with calls from the dead. Arthur Roth is a lonely kid with big ideas and a gift for attracting abuse. Nolan knows but can never tell what really happened in the summer of '77, when his idiot savant younger brother built a vast cardboard fort with secret doors leading into other worlds. The past isn't dead. It isn't even past. APPLE BOOKS REVIEW

Joe Hill’s eerie, disquieting short stories feature vampires, a deranged kidnapper, an unsavory writer, and even ghost trees. Hill asks us to contemplate what’s mysterious and terrifying in the everyday world, spinning tales about two brothers who make a disturbing discovery about their father or a very spooky phone that becomes a boy’s key to survival. We love that while all of Hill’s tales are unsettling, they each have their own distinctive mood: Some are funny, others are nostalgic, and a few are downright harrowing. 20th Century Ghosts is full of nightmarish brushes with the surreal that will haunt you long after you’ve put the book down for the night.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY DEC 12, 2005

Fully developed characters with complex emotional lives enhance the 14 horror stories in Hill's extraordinary debut collection. In "Abraham's Boys," Count Dracula's nemesis, Dr. Van Helsing, tries to teach his young sons his dispassionate methods of vampire slaying, but succeeds only in demonstrating his soullessness. "Voluntary Committal" tells of an idiot savant who applies his uncanny architectural skills to helping his adored older brother find a suggestively sinister way to remove problems from his life. Whether detailing relationships between children and parents or between teenage peers, Hill is flawless in his ability to articulate frailties that humanize his characters and make them vulnerable to intrusions of the strange. This is particularly noticeable in the title story, about a haunted cinema whose young female ghost seduces patrons with unfulfilled lives, and the surreal "My Father's Mask," which disturbs with subtle hints of taboo sexuality. There's not a false note or disappointing effort in this book, which introduces one of the most confident and assured new voices in horror and dark fantasy to emerge in recent years.

Great stories.

I give the beginning and end stories 5, but the middle stories 3s or 4s. Hold out to the end, that one kept me up late at night, very original. Scary in a very different way

Great Collection

Loved them all some more than others. The last one was my favorite, and I hated it too, because the book was over. I've read everything out there by this author and haven't been disappointed yet.

How can I be the first person to review this?

If you don't know who Joe Hill is you are not paying attention. This collection of short stories ranges from the frightening, to giddy, to truly heart breaking. "Pop Art" will move you, "My Father's Mask" will blow your mind, and the last story...well...you'll just have to wait and see...

It’s conceivable that Joe King did not have the easiest of times at school. The slightly unfortunate moniker, a gift from the gods to that most merciless type of person, the child, also marked him out as the son of America’s most famous King: Stephen.

It was an association that Joe was keen to avoid when he embarked on his own writing career, where he goes by the name Joe Hill. In the acknowledgements proceeding 20th Century Ghosts , a collection of short stories first seen in various publications during his early career, Hill proudly states that his publisher “took a chance on 20th Century Ghosts without knowing anything about me except that he liked my stories”.

Short stories have fallen out of fashion. Most of us want a story that we can really get our teeth into. This is especially true for fans of science fiction and fantasy, of whom a publisher once said, measure the worth of a book ‘by the kilo’.

However, any true connoisseur of genre fiction will know that there are real treasures to be found in the short form. You need look only as far as H. P. Lovecraft’s Necronomicon to see the influence it can wield when in the hands of a master.

Ad – content continues below

In genre terms, the stories here are a mixed bunch, ranging from adrenaline-pumping horror to character-driven drama.

The (nearly) title story, 20th Century Ghost , is the tale of a young boy who, on a visit to his local cinema, sees a ghost. And it changes his life. A more detailed description of a short story would provide a disservice to the reader, but it is a sweet and wistful yarn about nostalgia, loss, and the movies.

On the other hand, the story that opens the book, Best New Horror , is a different kind of beast. In some ways it is a classic horror story which depends on the reader’s knowledge of the genre’s tropes in order for it to be fully appreciated. Like Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott in Scream , who knows she shouldn’t go back inside the house but can’t see a better way to escape her situation, the choices that the central character makes build tension in a way that relies on the reader to provide many of their own scares.

It’s this confidence in both his readership and his own ability that sets Joe Hill apart from many début authors, and makes it easy to see why the publisher give a chance to some kid with only a handful of short stories under his belt and not even a famous surname.

It isn’t necessary for a reader to be aware of Hill’s lineage to know that he is someone who understands and loves a good story, regardless of which genre it ‘belongs’ to. As fantasy and horror writer Christopher Golden rightly says in his introduction to the book, “It happens so rarely for a writer to pop up fully formed like this.”

Of course, as with any collection of short stories, or sketch shows, or bag of Revels, there are some that will hit the spot and some that won’t. This will largely be a case of personal preference. There are no stinkers here that shouldn’t have been included, but you will certainly find yourself remembering some morsels more fondly than others.

When the last page is turned and you’re enjoying that just finished feeling, I suspect you will be glad you gave the book, and short stories in general, your time. But perhaps the greatest joy of 20th Century Ghosts is in how clearly it illustrates Joe Hill’s potential.

The comparison may be unfair, but it is hard to escape and is, of course, a compliment. Joe has many of his father’s strengths, and after closing the book you sense that it is only a matter of time before he, too, writes something that becomes part of the landscape of popular culture, as his old man has done so many times before.

And, no, I’m not joking.

20th Century Ghosts is out now and available from the Den Of Geek Store .

20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill: John C Adams Reviews

Book name: 20th Century Ghosts

Author: Joe Hill

Publisher: PS Publishing

Format: ebook, print, audiobook

Genre: Horror

Publication Date: 2005

Star Rating: 5/5

Joe Hill is now such a well-known and respected horror writer that feels like so long since he made his debut with 20th Century Ghosts , a collection of horror short stories.

In fact, it was only in 2005 that PS Publishing shared Joe Hill’s writing with an unsuspecting world.

20th Century Ghosts is an anthology of fifteen short stories, with a cheeky bonus story slipped into the ‘Acknowledgements’ section to reward those of us who always religiously read a book’s back-matter.

Some of the stories weren’t really horror at all, but many fell squarely within the horror ambit so 20th Century Ghosts can confidently be placed within that genre.

My personal favourite story was actually the first one, ‘Best New Horror’. I was very drawn in by the way that the narrative unfolded, and how reflective it was about the process of creating and publishing horror fiction.

Eddie Carroll edits a horror magazine. He’s exhausted and demoralised by the same old, same old that seems to arrive in his mailbox. He yearns for something fresh and new.

Then he unexpectedly receives a letter from a fellow editor, Harold Noonan, recommending a story to him.

Eddie’s intrigued. “Buttonboy” has proven too disturbing for the readers of the literary review that Harold Noonan edits, but he’s keen to see it gain the recognition it deserves.

Eddie begins an astonishingly thorough search for “Buttonboy”’s elusive author.

This leads Eddie via a horror convention to a house in the mountains, and some terrible discoveries worthy of a horror book or movie of their own.

I loved ‘Best New Horror’. There were hints of HP Lovecraft, the Texas Chain Saw Massacre and much else besides. A cracking start to 20th Century Ghosts .

My other favourite story in this anthology was ‘You Will Hear the Locust Sing’, which was straight out of the ‘central character turns into insect’ school of horror.

It reminded me a lot of The Fly , of course, but in ‘You Will Hear the Locust Sing’, the protagonist (Francis Kay) is a child.

The treatment was sympathetic as Francis becomes a locust, though the explanation of how his dietary choices have driven the transformation is pretty stomach-churning.

Francis’s home life is pretty dismal, and he’s so hungry but come nightfall, when he returns home, he can’t help but feast on his father and his father’s girlfriend.

I felt incredibly sorry for Francis before his transformation but, like any good fictional transformation, he was in many ways better off afterwards. This gave ‘You Will Hear the Locust Sing’ a surprisingly up-beat feel.

I didn’t take to the story which gave 20th Century Ghosts its title quite as much. This was such a shame, because the discussion of the relationship between horror and film was of interest, and I do love a ghost story.

There was just something too reflective for me, which I think was what prevented me from immersing myself in the ghost story element sufficiently.

Joe Hill used almost every element of horror in this short volume of stories. ‘Abraham’s Boys’ was a vampire story and ‘Better Than Home’ was a subtle tale of the descent into mental health problems in a young boy who is obsessive compulsive.

The most powerful narrative came from ‘The Black Phone’, where a boy is abducted by a paedophile. Finney receives help from the spirit of the last boy killed before he was snatched, a child he knew slightly from the sports’ field. This story was both terrifying and inspiring at the same time.

20th Century Ghosts was incredibly strong for a debut collection. I was no surprise to me to see Joe Hill’s subsequent success as a horror writer. His deep understanding of the genre and love of horror were both evident.

20th century ghosts audible audiobook – unabridged.

Imogene is young and beautiful. She kisses like a movie star and knows everything about every film ever made. She's also dead and waiting in the Rosebud Theater for Alec Sheldon on an afternoon in 1945....Arthur Roth is a lonely kid with big ideas and a gift for attracting abuse. It isn't easy to make friends when you're the only inflatable boy in town....Francis is unhappy. He was human once, but that was then. Now he's an eight-foot tall locust and everyone in Calliphora will tremble when they hear him sing....John Finney is locked in a basement that's stained with the blood of half a dozen other murdered children. In the cellar with him is an antique telephone, long since disconnected, but which rings at night with calls from the dead.

The past isn't dead. It isn't even past.

20th Century Ghosts: 10th Anniversary Edition

Cover, Endpapers,  and Slipcase Art:  Vincent Chong

Anyone out there heard of this cat Joe Hill? Yeah, of course you have. And I’ll bet ya heard of Joe’s Ray Bradbury’s Fellowship award for the story ‘20th Century Ghost’ and maybe you heard he also received the William L. Crawford award for best new fantasy writer in 2006, the A. E. Coppard Long Fiction Prize in 1999 for ‘Better Than Home’ and the 2006 World Fantasy Award for ‘Voluntary Committal’. His stories have appeared in a variety of magazines, such as Postscripts, Subterranean Magazine and The High Plains Literary Review, and in many anthologies. Well, it’s 10 years since, overloaded to the back teeth with projects,  CD Head Honcho Richard Chizmar sent Joe our way to ask if PS might be interested in publishing his collection of tales, wrapped around the title of that Bradbury Fellowship story. On the night Joe responded to my suggestion that he send me his three best yarns. I read ‘Ghost’, ‘Pop Art’ (sheer genius and containing a killer closing line) and, heck, you know, I don’t recall the third one. I do recall dropping him a line first thing the next morning and asking for a phone number and I called and we spoke and we made a deal and, well, you know the rest—20TH CENTURY GHOSTS, GUNPOWDER, HORNS, plus a little something special just down the pike that we’ll talk about a little later. But before that, just to re-whet your whistle, here’s the 10th Anniversary edition of the book that started the ball rolling and which notched up in quick succession the World Fantasy Award, the British Fantasy Award, the International Horror Guild
