Safety and Equipment Is the boat safe and in good condition? Yes, the vessel is currently in survey with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), which requires comprehensive safety equipment standards and regular safety checks. A safety briefing is given to the charter passengers after embarking and safety gear will be provided if required. All vessels in our fleet are selected for safety, comfort, quality and cleanliness. We are proud to keep them this way. What is the maximum capacity of the boat? Although Sydney Sundancer is licensed to carry 70 passengers the owners restrict the number of guests accepted aboard to 50.  This restriction may be relaxed in certain circumstances, consult your charter advisor who will liaise with the operator. Please note, an infant, regardless of age is considered a passenger. Is the boat suitable for children? Yes, Sydney Sundancer is suitable for children appropriate sized lifejackets lifejackets are available on request. Children must be under adult supervision at all times. What toilet facilities are on board? Sydney Sundancer is equipped with two modern, spacious marine toilets with easy access for charter. Catered Food Options Can we organise a meal on board? Yes, we can recommend some excellent caterers for you where we can design the perfect menu to suit your budget and taste. BYO Catering Are we allowed to bring our own food and drinks? Yes, we suggest that you bring boat friendly food that requires minimum preparation e.g. platter-style cold foods or we can provide a barbeque. Is there a BBQ on board? Yes, there is a BBQ on board. Do I have to wash up the dishes? No! Sit back and relax and the crew will do that for you. Do we need to bring ice for the cooler / esky? Yes. On Tour Can we have music on board? Yes, the vessel is equipped with a sound system where you can plug in a music compatible device like an iPhone. Please ensure your mp3 player is fully charged. Where can we go during our charter? Your skipper can take you most places within Sydney Harbour, providing it is within the surveyed boundaries. Should your guests wish to go to a specific location within Sydney Harbour please let us know at time of briefing. Can we extend our charter time during the charter? Yes, although this is subject to availability. Please note, the charter will be extended if there is not another charter following and if the whaft is not pre-booked and payment will be processed post charter by authorised bond. Booking and Payment How do I secure my booking? A minimum 50% deposit is required to confirm booking, with the balance payable 14 days prior to commencement of the charter. Upon payment of your deposit, a Skippered Charter Contract will be emailed to you, confirming details relevant to your charter, which must be signed and returned. Payment can be made by MasterCard, Visa, EFTPOS, Electronic Funds Transfer or cash. Diners Card, Bankcard and Cheques are not accepted. Is there any paperwork to complete before we go on our charter? Yes, we require your signed contract and authorised bond form prior to your charter commencing. Cancellation If I cancel the charter, can I get a refund? We do not offer refunds should you wish to cancel your charter. If boating conditions are unsafe, as determined by the management of Sydney Harbour Escapes, we will offer a six month voucher where you can reschedule your charter based on availability. Please see our General Booking Information on our website or contact a staff member on 02 9328 4748 for details. Preparations and Arrival What do you advise we bring along for our charter? As conditions can vary on the water, it is suggested that you bring along a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, swimmers, and seasonal jumper or jacket. Please wear white-soled shoes or non-marking boating shoes. Strictly no black soled shoes or stiletto-heeled shoes, as this will damage the decking. Does our party need to get there before the set time of the charter? All your party should be at the designated pick up point at least 15 minutes prior to your charter time to allow loading of passengers and gear and to enable enough time for the skipper's safety briefing. Please note, our charter will start and finish at the times on your contract. Can one of our guests be picked up late and dropped off early from another wharf? Multiple pick up and drop off points are not recommended as this will shorten your charter time significantly. We suggest that guests wishing to join the charter late or leave early should arrange alternative transportation via water taxi at their own cost. Are you a deckhand who holds a minimum of a Coxswain?

Are you interested in doing a mixture of both private & charters?

A well run 30m private/charter MY is on the search for a deckhand to join their team for the tail end of the Whitsundays season, before the vessel makes its way back down to Sydney.

The deckhand will need to hold a minimum of a coxswain to meet the minimum manning requirement.

The deckhand should also have an interest in water sports, as the vessel mans various toys including flight boards, SUP’s, diving and fishing equipment

The deckhand will work under the captain and be in charge of all deck operations, from detailing to anchoring, docking and lines

The deckhand should also be happy to learn to drive their small 5.5m jet tender.

The vessel is typically based in Sydney (Mosman / Spit marina)  8 months Sydney with winters away around the gold coast / Whitsundays region.

Generally there are BYO drinks options available for groups up to 45 guests. BYO boats will provide large eskies to keep your drinks nice and cold. Ice may or may not be included in your hire. We will let you know upon booking if your boat has the BYO option available and/or if a BYO fee applies so there will be no surprises.

Having sufficient food onboard to abide by RSA guidelines is compulsory on all cruises. The majority of boats and yachts up to 45 guests, will allow you to BYO food. Most boats have onboard BBQs and the crew will cook your food. We will let you know upon enquiring if your boat has the BYO food option available so there will be no surprises.

Larger catamarans, yachts, and event boats are especially suitable for hosting DJ parties. Upon booking, we will inform you if having a DJ onboard is possible on your chosen boat. If you’re interested in having a DJ at your event but don’t have one lined up yet, don’t worry! We can help you arrange a DJ for your private boat party. Pricing and options for DJ services are available upon request, so please let us know if you need any assistance with this.

Depending on the vessel, this is possible. In particular, catamarans are a great option for a day of water play on Sydney Harbour. If you are on a vessel that has easy water access included, your captain will take you to the perfect secluded swimming spots. Please let our team know if swimming is something you’re interested upon enquiring.

Boats will head out in all weather conditions when deemed safe by the captain. If the weather is deemed unsafe and the captain needs to cancel, you will receive a 12-month voucher. This voucher is equal to the value of your booking and can be used to reschedule your charter. The past years we’ve had quite a few groups out with a bit of rain, and they all still had an amazing time! There is plenty of space on the boats to keep dry, and sometimes a little rain even adds to the fun!

Melbourne's snap decision to remove hire e-scooters from CBD could send 'shock waves' to other states, experts say

The City of Melbourne has voted to break its contracts with two share hire e-scooter companies six months early, in response to safety concerns.

Other states are currently conducting their own trials, with some saying Melbourne's decision might have widespread impacts.

But despite the perception of a safety risk, experts say e-scooter riders do not differ significantly in accident risk from cyclists or drivers.

The dramatic ban on share hire e-scooters in Melbourne's CBD has been described as a "big kick in the teeth" for the rollout of scooter networks in other Australian cities.

On Tuesday night, Melbourne joined cities like Paris, Montréal, Rome, Toronto and Utrecht in winding back or banning the rollout of e-scooter networks.

"We heard from shop traders in the city. We heard from residents. We heard from the head of the emergency department at the Royal Melbourne Hospital," Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece said. "We heard from a blind lady. They told us that the city's footpaths have not been safe."

The decision has disappointed Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan.

"I really hope the city of Melbourne can have a change of heart on this decision," Ms Allan said.

"There is a role for e-scooters in our public transport network, particularly for those last mile journeys, for getting cars off local roads."

Professor Stephen Greaves, from the University of Sydney's Institute of Transport and Logistic Studies, said other Australian cities would be watching the Melbourne decision closely.

"I think this is a step backwards, but like anything, you've got to take a few hits before you get to the to the end game," he said.

"I'm very disappointed — for those of us that really see e-scooters playing a really important role in the whole sustainable, active travel debate, I think it's a big kick in the teeth."

Safety concerns cast heavy shadow over e-scooter ban

The push to ban e-scooters in Melbourne's CBD has been brewing for some time, with concerns about dangerous behaviour and the growing injury toll for both riders and pedestrians.

"There are just too many people breaking the rules — people not wearing helmets, double dinking, riding on footpaths, creating a hazard for people around the city," said Cr Reece, who led the charge to scrap the city's e-scooter trial six months early.

Victoria Police issued 1,964 e-scooter infringements across the state between December 1, 2021 and July 31 this year, for both hire scooters and privately owned ones.

The majority of the infringements were issued for offences such as failure to wear a helmet (714), riding e-scooters on a footpath (585) and carrying more than one person on an e-scooter (342).

In the same period, there were also 860 collisions involving e-scooters, with a total of seven fatalities.

Three of those fatalities have occurred since April this year.

Milad Haghani, a lecturer in urban mobility at the University of NSW, said international evidence showed the injury risk and death risk of e-scooter riders was no higher than for bike riders.

"The thing is that we are used to bikes, and the accidents around bikes do not make as big headlines," he said.

Professor Greaves said e-scooter riders were no worse than bad car drivers when it came to breaking the rules.

"There's always 10 to 15 per cent who choose to [break the rules], and yet we don't go on and on and on about them like we do with these scooters," he said.

E-scooters around the country

Australian capital cities have been rolling out e-scooters, each with their own regulations and at their own pace.

New South Wales bans private scooters completely, but has allowed local councils to run e-scooter trials since 2022.

The trials limit the speeds of e-scooters to 20 kilometres per hour, and are currently being run in Kogarah, Albury, Forster-Tuncurry, Wollongong and Armidale.

Hired e-scooters have been allowed on Adelaide footpaths and shared paths since 2019.

However South Australia currently bans private scooters, but is set to allow them under new laws that will set a speed limit of 25 kilometres per hour.

Since April 15, Hobart residents have had access to e-scooter provider Beam, with the city earmarking a trial of stricter parking regulations in the CBD and Battery Point this year.

In Brisbane, the council estimates around 3,200 e-scooters and e-bikes are available to hire through two companies, with a speed limit of 25 kilometres per hour on shared and bicycle paths.

Safety has also posed a concern in the state, with some in Queensland calling for random breath testing to be introduced to combat drunk e-scooter driving.

The City of Perth is conducting its own two-year trial of hire e-scooters, limiting the speed of private scooters to 25 kilometres per hour, while the ACT has run a shared e-scooter hire scheme since September 2020.

Professor Greaves said Melbourne's decision was sending "shock waves" to other states.

"Being in Sydney, where we essentially outlaw the use of these scooters, we've been watching Melbourne and Brisbane closely," Professor Greaves said.

"I was feeling quietly confident that some regulation would be forthcoming in New South Wales, probably towards the end of this year. Now I'm not so sure."

Is there a solution to the safety issue?

Even though major cities like Paris and Madrid have banned e-scooters, many more haven't.

An analysis by insurance broker Compare The Market last year found the top four bike and e-scooter friendly cities in the world were Vienna, Seoul, Berlin, and Bordeaux.

Seoul alone has 20 share hire scooter providers, while Berlin has 12.

"European cities that have a good bicycle infrastructure have managed to control their e-scooter injuries to a great degree," Milad Haghani said.

"They have not seen the level of surge in injuries that we've seen in many other cities after adopting e-scooters."

Professor Greaves said apart from better infrastructure, technology would help iron out the problems in the adoption of e-scooters, such as a lack of helmet wearing, riding in the wrong places, and riding while intoxicated.

"Some of the things that have happened in Melbourne should not have happened. But there are a lot of technological fixes to those things, and perhaps that's a learning out of this," he said.

"It's the e-scooter providers who are at the forefront of adopting these technologies. It might give them an extra push."

Just last month, share hire company Neuron announced a plan to roll out AI-powered safety cameras on its Melbourne fleet, in what would have been a world-first deployment of the technology at scale.

But with Melbourne now poised to remove scooters from its CBD, the task may now fall on a different city to lead the charge on e-scooter safety.
