About Enterprise V

The owner of this 51.20m yacht describes why Enterprise V was the favorite of his four ships: 'I guess what really stands out is her dark blue hull. We've taken her to Europe and back to the Caribbean five times and up and down the Eastern seaboard. She's got lots of miles on her and still works great. I have always thought that the real test of a boat is how she looks ten years after being built. With a Feadship, you just put on a coat of paint and it is as good as new. A Feadship is a joy to have.'

Nordhavn 55 – Enterprise III 360° Tour

Listing Broker

Jeff Merrill, CPYB +1 949.355.4950 [email protected]

Enterprise III resides in Ventura, CA on a cruising permit since she is flagged Australian. She is available for inspection by appointment.  A previous potential buyer was unclear on the US Duty status, so the owners reached out to the CBP (Customs and Border Patrol) for clarity. On September 1, 2021, we received an email ruling that confirms the US duty status: (Entire ruling available by request).

Under the facts of this case, the above-described foreign-built vessel would not be considered to have been exported and would not be subject to duty upon its sale within the United States to a U.S. citizen.

The unrivaled popularity of the Nordhavn 55 is due to many factors, not the least of which is the genuine joy owners experience operating and traveling aboard these exceptional trawlers. Full time cruising? Ocean crossing capability? All the comforts of home? Economical to own and operate? Gorgeous interior accommodations? If you desire all of the above, you deserve to know more about Enterprise III.

Enterprise III is hull number three of the incredibly popular Nordhavn 55 design. She has been underway seeking adventure since she was commissioned.  A boat like this Nordhavn is not meant to park in a marina, its purpose is to travel and by keeping on the move systems are maintained in good working order, ready and reliable.

Her sellers are the third owners, experienced boaters, who knew ENTERPRISE III was something special when they purchased her and have actively travelled thousands of miles while maintaining her in “ready to go” condition. They have pampered her while actively cruising along the west coast of North America, splitting their time between Alaska and the PNW (all seasons) and Mexico Sea of Cortes. The original buyer had owned many other trawlers and was one of the first to realize the potential of the 55. He made excellent selections in layout out and equipment and traveled thousands of miles before turning her over to the second owners. They too were active cruisers owning her for four years and for the past seven years the current owners/sellers have enjoyed full time cruising aboard this remarkable trawler home.

The interior on ENTERPRISE III features lovely teak. Veneers originate from the same tree for uniform grain and hue. Spending most of the last few years as full-time cruisers, the sellers have made her sparkle and she has been an ideal getaway.

With production halted after (45) Nordhavn 55s were launched, ENTERPRISE III will allow her next owners the pleasure of cruising aboard one of PAE/Nordhavns’ most popular designs. Sistership 55s have crossed the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and they are truly scattered all over the world. The Nordhavn 55 is an ideal platform for adventurous cruisers who seek the benefits of a two-person manageable passage maker.

The demand for 55s has continued well after production ceased. Finding a Nordhavn 55 that is suitable for your ambitions is not an easy task. The market availability is limited, and each hull has evolved over its years of enjoyment to reflect the tastes and priorities of her operators. As the product developed Nordhavn incorporated new features as the building cycle developed but starting with hull number one they really got this design right, a testament to solid engineering and exceptional craftsmanship.

It is not uncommon for 55s to change hands privately through a knowledgeable broker who can match up a buyer and seller, we have done this several times in the last few years, and buyers relying solely on internet MLS announcements have missed out on sales that never became known publicly.

ENTERPRISE III – HULL NUMBER 3 The Nordhavn 55 design is substantial, she measures nearly 61’ overall and her impressive size features a tall freeboard for a dry ride and contains generous headroom throughout. Appropriate ballast keeps her on her on her feet while underway.

ENTERPRISE III has been actively operated and cared for; she is a proven trawler that has delivered on her promises of comfortable cruising to remote and exotic ports of call.

The Nordhavn 55 is a strong, capable offshore cruiser and one of the most successful and popular designs that Nordhavn has built. Her high bow, efficient hull, practical layout, and luxurious amenities make this yacht ideal for ocean passages and coastal cruising.

ENTERPRISE III has a 3,000+mile range at cruise speed (7.5kts). Dedicated ownership with so much time aboard has enabled the sellers to focus on continual improvements, upgrades and maintenance. The generous freeboard allows for a safe and comfortable ride as well as providing spacious interior accommodations.

The current owners (liveaboard for 8 years) have travelled almost 19,000 nautical miles, spending full years in both the PNW (Canada and Alaska) and Mexico (Sea of Cortez). ENTERPRISE III is a full four-season vessel equipped with all the necessary infrastructure for self-sufficient security and comfort in the most extreme of conditions.

The quality of fit and finish has earned Nordhavn a reputation for seaworthiness, comfort, and strong resale values. The Nordhavn 55 model has been the choice of both novice and veteran cruisers and her ocean crossing capability, storage for provisioning and reliable equipment installed make her a mostly self-sufficient vessel for visiting remote locations for long intervals.

The owner stateroom door opens from the saloon, and there is a forward door access from the stairway. This allows for privacy when sleeping and easy traffic flow when the stateroom is unoccupied.

The bow thruster is located forward along with some plumbing and through hulls. The center section has shelves for storage and holds the forward batteries. The ladder entry has the watermaker installed on a shelf to port. Aft is the fresh water area with hot water tank, fresh water pump, hot and cold water manifolds and air pressure accumulator tank. Aft of the helm chair is a raised L-shaped settee and table that accommodates up to five people. The windows and outboard Dutch Doors are all Diamond Sea/Glaze commercial strength.

  • Wide bed with sheets, pillows and comforter
  • 12V nav com battery charger installed under the bed

PILOTHOUSE DAY HEAD: One of the great features that helped launch the success of the Nordhavn 55 is the incorporation of a private head and sink on the bridge deck. This “day head” is aft to starboard and is a great use of space to provide this essential convenience. The location is ideal if you are on watch in the pilothouse and is a quick few step away from the action in the saloon.

UTILITY ROOM: The inboard stairway from the galley takes you down to the Utility room landing. A top load freezer is forward and it is surrounded on either side by the separate clothes washer and clothes dryer for laundry. A large storage locker is available to port. There are drawers and access lockers. Under the port cabinetry is the actuator for the active fin stabilizer. Access to the starboard active fin actuator is under the removable stairs. This area is an ideal prep location before entering the engine room.

  • Large capacity top loading GE freezer
  • Bosch Axxis clothes washer
  • Storage lockers and drawers

ENGINE ROOM: The engine room is fronted by a thick gasketed Diamond Sea Glaze door with inspection window. The large John Deere primary engine is on centerline. Immediately to starboard upon entry is the gravity fed supply tank which receives fuel from the four main fuel tanks and distributes to the main engine, generator and the hydronic heating diesel boiler (note: the wing engine has its own diesel supply tank).

On the starboard fuel tank bulkhead the plumbing manifolds for fuel return and fuel transfer are neatly arranged. There is also an oil change system installed. The port outboard bulkhead comprises the mounting location for the extensive hydraulics package. The engine room also includes a Sea Fire fire suppression system. There is a proprietary dual inlet seachest located on centerline beneath the main engine shaft which provides cooling water for the wing engine, generator, air conditioning, etc.

Aft on the starboard side is the Lugger 984 wing engine and its 10-gallon isolated supply tank. This tank cannot be filled from the dock, only from one of the four main tanks; meaning that all fuel reaching the wing engine has been filtered by the Racor filter incorporated in the fuel transfer system. This filter can contain a 30, 10 or 2 micron element. So if poor fuel has compromised main engine operation, the likelihood of it compromising the wing also is significantly reduced by this default filtering.

Aft to port is the Northern Lights 20kW generator. The floor panels are designed with removable lids in key areas for access to service and inspection. All the way aft is a door to the lazarette which is a great feature since it provides underway access to the steering, inverter and batteries without having to go on deck.

The spaciousness in the engine room for getting around and observing provides the crew with areas to stand and/or sit making this vital area of the boat extraordinarily inviting.

  • Main Engine: John Deere 6081 330 HP turbo-charged diesel
  • Four main fuel Tanks: (2) 990-gallon primary engine room sides with sight glasses and (2) 160- gallon forward. All gravity-feeding to a central 30 gallon ‘Supply tank’
  • Independent 10-gallon wing engine tank – can only be filled via internal fuel transfer, therefore reduced chances of ‘contaminated’ fuel compromising wing-engine performance
  • High capacity (nominal 180 gph) fuel transfer pump with new larger Racor (30, 10 or 2 micron) transfer filter element
  • Comprehensive fuel management and control valve manifold
  • Mathers electronic controls in wheelhouse, on fly-bridge and on remote station

The Cadillac of Yachts Docks in Washington

The Ship of Soap Enterprise III, The Amway Corp.'s Ultimate Hospitality Suite

Rich DeVos would like to set the record straight. He is not, repeat not , giving his $5-million corporate yacht to President Ronald Reagan.

"No way ," ways the deeply tanned Grand Rapids, Mich., millionaire and finance chairman of the Republican National Committee.

The yacht is the 131-foot Enterprise III, the glorious Goodyear blimp of the seas.

It steamed into town last week, a custom-built Cadillac of corporate yachts, for a flotilla of exclusive parties, private dinners and twilight crusises feting cocktail-quaffing Cabinet members, ambassadors, representatives and senators. The ultimate hospitality suite.

"The last time I had gone down the Potomac was on the Sequoia," sighs Frank Ursomarso, former Nixon advance man and now White House director of communications. "I haven't been down it in a long time."

Indeed, when Jimmy Carter sold the 104-foot Sequoia in 1977 as part of an austerity move, some Washingtonians saw it as grounds for impeachment. But Ursomarso says Ronald Reagan's well-publized search for a replacement has been temporarily scuttled. "We're doing nothing."

The good ship Enterprise is owned by Amway Corp., which is to soap what Tupperware is to plastic. Company President DeVos and Chairman Jay Van Andel -- two former vitamin salesmen who parlayed the direct-sale company begun in their basement 21 years ago into a $1-billion corporation -- are in town for Friday's dedication of a new "uplink facility" in Fairfax for the Mutual Broadcasting System, which is owned by Amway.

DeVos, sporting a diamond pinkie ring and Gucci loafers, says the yacht is used primarily for floating seminar sessions in the sun, rewarding Amway distributors who sell $100,000 worth of merchandise during the year with a one-week Caribbean cruise.

But when in Washington, the ship of soap is more nautical nightclub than conference room.

It all started last Monday night with the Michigan congressional delegation. Tuesday night, it was the Republican National Committee staff. Wednesday night was "International Night," with embassy personnel from 12 countries Amway does business with, including England, France, Germany, Japan and Canada.

The Reagans, according to an Amway spokesman, were invited "any night they wish to come." So far, they have declined.

Ridgewell's Washington's premiere catering firm, was hired to handle the week-long, gala for a reported fee of $10,000.

There were waiters in black tie. Sterling silver candelabra on the buffet table. Tenderloin of beef, rack of lamb, chicken Wellington, chocolate-dipped macaroons, mousse royale, cucumber boats with ham salad and Clams Casino. All washed down with Chateauneuf du Pape and Chablis Grand Cru.

Beefy security guards kept groups of gawkers behind a locked gate at the Washington Marina, where the Enterprise III is docked.

Between sightseeing in rented limos, making speeches, seeing friends on Capitol Hill and chatting with Vice President George Bush, DeVos and Van Andel sank into plush chairs on the orange-and-yellow afterdeck of the Enterprise III to talk about the zen of yachting.

"The yacht is what America stands for," says DeVos. "We were told for a long time that it wasn't, but it's changed."

It's like his $40,000 green Rolls Royce. A yacht, he says, stands for "opportunity and reward for achievement." It stands for wealth and power. Above all, he says, it stands for success. "It's like Air Force One," he says proudly.

Jay Van Andel, tall and platinum-haired, interrupts.

"I happen to think the American people want the president to have these things in life," he says.

The yacht, with a cruising speed of 14 knots, was custom-built in the Netherlands last year at a cost of approximately $5 million. Since then, Amway has put an indeterminate amount of money into keeping the boat shipshape. "Yachts are like racehorses," says Van Andel. "The first cost is the smallest."

Helen DeVos flips through a scrapbook of photos taken at the boat's christening. "It was so cold I had to borrow the shipbuilder's wife's fur coat," she says.

The yacht, says her husband, is "an ego trip."

"It's the Rolls Royce of yachts," says chief steward Frank Padrone, passing a tray of cocktails.

"It rides like a Cadillac ," says Ridgewell's waiter Miguel Yanos, holding a silver tray of hors d'oeuvres.

The 292-ton, steel-and-teak behemoth boasts five plush staterooms, a bar, two lounges, galley, library (titles include "Born Again" and "What the Bible Is All About"), stereo system, closed-circuit television alarm and a crew of nine. Currently, it's on its way from the Caribbean to Nantucket, where it will spend the summer.

To qualify for the coverted five-day cruise, distributors (usually a husband-and-wife team) must make "diamond" by selling $100,000 worth of panty hose, biodegradable laundry detergent, jewelry, bug spray and various other Amway products. If the "diamond distributor" gets seasick, he can stay on the Caribbean resort Peter Island, another Amway holding. DeVos says Amway has a special department in the Ada, Mich., corporate headquarters that chooses the cruise couples based on their "compatibility" with one another.

Currently, there are 750,000 distributors. Only 400 have made diamond.

"We think this is a unique incentive," says DeVis. "It's the symbolism of achievement, the hope of achievement. Some of the joys of life that could be theirs."

In fact, says DeVos, at company conventions, when a picture of the Enterprise III is flashed on the screen, "People who make $50 a week stand up and cheer. They say, 'One of these days I'm going to get on that.'"

The fact that the boat is so inaccessible makes it more attractive. No, they say, no celebrities have ever been on board the Entrprise III. The boat is for the employes .

"But it's really funny," says Helen DeVos, watching the sun set on the Potomac. "When the boat is docked somewhere, people always ask if Frank Sinatra's on board."

The Enterprise III was docked on the Caribbean island of St. Martin in late January when two men approached the gangplank and asked to come aboard.

It was Richard Nixon and his brother, Donald.

Capt. Keenan Van Mill, a bearish man with a Burl Ives goatee, walked out from the bridge, looked down and, he says, refused to let the ex-president pass. The Amway owners had already left the island, Van Mill says, and besides, "I didn't have anything to talk with him about."

As most Amway afficionados know, the captain says, "We don't just let anybody on board."

Standing behind the chain-link fence at Pier 4 are two D.C. policemen with Polaroid cameras. Rich DeVos steps out onto the rail of the Enterprise III and waves like a politician from a podium. The policemen quickly click their cameras.

"How ya doin'?" DeVos calls to the men.

"Pretty good," answers D.C. policeman Henry Cole, who started selling Amway products seven months ago.

DeVos says Amway distributors from the Washington area have been straining against the fence all week to get a glimpse of the yacht. DeVos cups his hands like a microphone to the sides of his mouth.

"When ya gonna make diamond?" he shouts.

Henry Cole beams and calls back: "1984."

Keenan Van Mill, a salty 47-year-old sailor, stands on the bridge while guests from the RNC staff party wander up from the bar.

Amway, which bills itself as the "success story of the 20th century," has owned three corporate yachts. The Enterprise I has been sold. The Enterprise II, smaller than the new yacht, is in a Miami shipyard for repairs.

Van Mill has been with the company for the last four years. Yes, he says, being a corporate captain for Amway is "one of the top" private positions in his chosen field.

"Up to a month ago, this was the largest corporate yacht in America," he says. "Then somebody came along last month with on that's four feet longer."

The Enterprise III operates 40 weeks a year and, since delivery last summer, has logged 11,000 miles.

"We're here to entertain people," Van Mill says. "We're very busy doing so."

But the Enterprise III -- which is scrubbed down daily with Amway liquid detergent -- is no love boat, he says.

"These people are pretty much family-oriented," he says. "In fact, it's a little too quiet sometimes."

A tall young man holding a drink wanders into the room. He is Dick DeVos, 25-year-old son of the Amway president. The company owners have four children each and live next door to each other in Grand Rapids.

"This is very formal, very stuffy," says DeVos, compared with the smaller boats the family sails at home on Lake Michigan.

He calls the Enterprise III "a floating corporate conference room," and says, if it's not the biggest in the world, "we kinda think she's one of the prettiest."

A man with a tan suede jacket points to a technical-looking gadget above the varnished, spoked wheet. He turns to Keenan Van Mill and says, in an officious tone, "Tell me about that circle thing up there."

"It's the windshield wiper," the captain replies.

The tour continues as the party moves out onto the bridge.

"Listen," Dick DeVos whispers, "don't say I said this is stuffy. My Mom'll kill me."

DeVos and Van Andel, both in their late 50s, met each other as teenagers back in Grand Rapids. They served in the Air Force together during World War II and returned home to start a flying school which never got off the ground. Then they decided to sail to the Caribbean. Their boat sank off Cuba. After a year in the sun, they returned to Michigan and began selling Nutrilite vitamins. In 1959, they started selling liquied detergent out of a basement and Amway ("American Way") was born.

DeVos and Van Andel say the secret to Amway's success is remarkable simple. A customer is contacted by a company distributor, who buys the merchandise from Amway and then sells it, usually at a 30-percent mark-up. If the customer becomes interested in selling Amway products, he or she must be sponsored by an existing distributor. You make money, says DeVos and Van Andel, not just by selling products, but also by sponsoring other distributors. Like Avon and Tupperware, the products are similar to those found in stores.

Some Amway distributors work at it full time, others do it to supplement their income. But the message is clear: You too can be a self-made millionaire.

"It's the despair," says DeVos, which destroys most people today. Amway offers a chance to get out of the rut. Amway, he says, stands for motivation. It stands for free enterprise.

"It used to be thought of as sinful to be successful," he says. "Only the poor are virtuous."

Van Andel pipes up. "That, of course, stems from jealousy."

DeVos wants to right "the mixed signals our young people have been given" about the sweet smell of success. "The unions are against motivation," he says. "It's evil to be eager. You're laughed at. That's going to have to change if we're to compete with Japan and Germany."

"If a rich person gets richer, a poor person doesn't necessarily get poorer," says Van Andel.

Rich DeVos takes a sip of his dirnk. "That's why a boat like this raises eyebrows."

The motor starts, the foghorn blows and the Enterprise III chugs backwards for 100 yards in the river. The partygoers stand in small groups near the bow, cocktails in hand. The men are in three-piece suits. The women are dressed in pastels and chiffon. They wave to a group of onlookers on the shore. The onlookers wave back, some of them jumping up and down.

"It's not the ship of soap, it's the ship of hope ," says Debbi Bard, a housewife from Forestville, Md., who drove all the way to the Washington Marina just to see the Enterprise III. She says she has sold $2,500 worth of Amway products to her friends, neighbors and relatives since February. She reaches into her van with orange shag carpeting and pulls out a few samples.

"Amway is going to get people back on the right track," says Valerie Kline, a paralegal from Landover Heights "Did you know there's less than a one-percent divorce rate for Amway people?"

It takes two years, they say, to get the right, positive mental attitude. To get out of your rut and stop being shy and start selling. Sell enough to make emerald, then enough to make pearl, and finally enough to make diamond.

As the Enterprise III steamed off down the Potomac, Martha White, a housewife from Landover Heights, snapped her last picture from her Instamatic.

Above all, she says, "Amway offers common people a chance to get on something like that ."

Hitler’s yacht sits off the coast of this florida beach. here’s why, the ostwind is one of many strange objects found in florida’s waters.

Anthony Talcott , Digital Journalist

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Nearly 5 miles off the coast of Miami Beach, a yacht sits at the bottom of the ocean.

This vessel — dubbed the Ostwind — has a strange history. It was once owned by Adolf Hitler.

The 80-foot-long yacht was commissioned by the infamous dictator in 1938 as an Olympic racing yacht, though it never actually competed.

According to historian Mike Miller , Hitler’s plan was to ride the yacht into England after Germany’s victory, where he would accept Winston Churchill’s surrender aboard the boat.

However, history had different plans.

After Germany’s defeat, the U.S. reportedly took control of the Ostwind, which was used as a training craft at the U.S. Naval Academy before being sold to a Nazi memorabilia collector in the 1970s, the Ocala Star-Banner reports.

The collector took the yacht to Jacksonville for repairs, but it was ultimately abandoned, and a marina owner then took possession.

Despite offers from a Nazi group to buy the yacht and turn it into a shrine, the marina owner ultimately reached out to Miami Beach officials about using the Ostwind as an artificial reef.

Eventually, the boat was taken from Jacksonville down to Miami Beach in 1989, and it was sunk off the coast to around 275 feet deep, state records indicate .

Nowadays, the only way to view the WWII-era relic is to throw on some scuba gear and take a dive.

Of course, the Ostwind isn’t the only strange object to be sunken off of Miami’s coast.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the following items have also been sunk near Miami Beach to create artificial reefs:

  • Smoke stacks
  • Radio towers
  • A water tower
  • Oil rig structures
  • A railroad barge
  • A minesweeper warship

Who is Ralph de la Torre? The CEO of Steward Health Care with a $40 million yacht

enterprise 5 yacht

Once a respected cardiac surgeon, Dr. Ralph de la Torre, chairman and CEO of Steward Health Care , has been publicly criticized for living a lavish lifestyle — owning not one but two yachts — while running his company into the ground.

De la Torre bought his $40-million yacht after Steward sold its hospital properties to Medical Trust Properties (MTP), a real-estate investment trust, in 2016 — a deal that resulted in a massive payday for executives while leaving the Steward-operated hospitals to face steep annual rents as they transitioned to being tenants under MTP’s ownership.

On Monday, those financial troubles came to a head when Steward filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy .

When de la Torre first started Steward in collaboration with Cerberus Capital Management, a New York-based private equity firm, his self-described goal was to create an affordable approach to healthcare that served vulnerable populations.

Instead, doctors, nurses and elected officials have criticized the for-profit network for prioritizing their own profits over patient care.

Here’s everything you need to know about the man behind Steward's downfall.

6 jaw-dropping revelations Stunning takeaways from Steward Health Care's bankruptcy filing

Does Steward’s CEO have a $40 million-dollar yacht?

In February of this year, Boston Globe columnist Brian McGrory revealed that Steward’s CEO owns not one, but two yachts.

De la Torre bought the $40 million, 190-foot yacht named the "Amaral" a few years ago, according to McGrory’s reporting for the Globe . De la Torre's other yacht is a $15 million, 90-foot sport fishing boat named the ‘Jaruco.'

The Amaral is a massive, six-bedroom yacht that costs about $4 million a year to run, according to SuperYacht Fan .

What will happen to Good Sam? What to know about Steward Health Care amid bankruptcy, financial crisis

According to reporting by The American Prospect , Steward acquired at least two business jets and a private suite at Dallas’s AA Arena, where the NBA’s Mavericks play.

Where did Ralph de la Torre work before Steward?

In 2008, de la Torre became the CEO of Caritas Christi Health Care, a struggling hospital network in Massachusetts. A few years later, he made a deal with Cerberus Capital Management to start Steward Health Care and invest money into struggling hospitals.

Is Ralph de la Torre a medical doctor?

De la Torre graduated from Duke University in 1988 and got his medical degree from a joint program between Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1992, according to his biography.

Before his stint as CEO of Steward, he was the founder and CEO of the Cardiovascular Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Cardiovascular Management Associates, according to his biography on Steward’s website . He also worked as the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at BIDMC.

What is Ralph de la Torre’s salary?

According to reporting by The American Prospect , an individual familiar with Steward’s finances estimated he makes about $16 million per year.

In 2020, de la Torre bought Steward from Cerberus for $335 million, but with his own stake in the investment company, used Steward’s cash to pay himself a $100 million dividend, according to that same reporting.

Where does Ralph de la Torre live?

According to reporting by the Globe , de la Torre lives in a Dallas "mansion" and shares a neighborhood with former President George W. Bush and Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks and longtime panelist on ABC's "Shark Tank."

When de la Torre was living in Boston, he lived in a seven-bedroom home in West Newton that he sold for more than $6 million in 2013, according to reporting by .

Who is Ralph de la Torre’s wife?

According to reporting by the Globe , de la Torre met his first wife, Wing Cheung de la Torre, a native of Hong Kong while he was in medical school. They married in 2004 and had twin boys in 2008. In 2018, she filed for divorce.

He later remarried Nicole Acosta, a self-described real estate representative, according to the Globe.

Eric Schmidt was supposed to buy a yacht once owned by a Russian oligarch. Here's the one he bought instead.

  • Eric Schmidt backed out of buying the Alfa Nero megayacht last year.
  • He instead purchased the Kismet, formerly owned by Shahid Khan, and renamed her Whisper.
  • The ship — one of the biggest yachts owned by a tech billionaire —was listed for about $161 million.

Insider Today

Last year, Eric Schmidt made waves in the yachting community when news came out that he was the soon-to-be owner of the Alfa Nero, an 81-meter megayacht that belonged to a sanctioned Russian oligarch .

The former Google CEO, who is worth $32.1 billion, per Bloomberg, was to pay $67.6 million for the yacht, which was being auctioned off by the government of Antigua and Barbuda , where the ship had been moored since February 2022, the month Russia invaded Ukraine. The small Caribbean nation had been spending $28,000 a week simply to maintain the mammoth boat.

But as the sale proceedings went on, legal challenges piled up as people laid claim to Alfa Nero, and Schmidt backed out of the deal.

It didn't take long for him to rebound, though. In September 2023, just three months after he won the Alfa Nero auction, the billionaire purchased Kismet, renaming her Whisper, Business Insider has learned.

A spokesperson for Schmidt declined to comment to Business Insider.

The 95-meter-long yacht, built by the renowned German shipyard Lürssen and delivered in 2014, was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner, Shahid Khan — hence images of the cat featured on her figurehead and throughout her decor.

Whisper, which can fit at least a dozen guests and a crew of 28 features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, as well as a full-service spa, lap pool, hammam, and outdoor fireplace. Made for entertaining, the megayacht has a cinema, a grand piano, and two helipads — one of which doubles as a basketball court and the other than transforms into a disco.

Her interior was designed to "create a feeling of relaxed opulence, based on a 'Champagne & Caviar' theme," according to the brokerage that sold the ship.

While the yacht's final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates).

At a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet — a steal, considering she typically goes for $3 million a week.

Head of Russian Ad Giant Buys Stake Cinema Chain (Report)

Moscow Downtown - H 2015

Sergei Vasiliev , general director of Russia’s largest TV ad seller Vi (formerly known as Video International ), has reportedly obtained a stake in ADG Group, the owner of a 39-theater chain in Moscow.

Vasiliev bought an unspecified stake in the company, entering into a partnership with the group’s owners, Grigory and Mikhail Pechersky , the Russian business daily Kommersant reported . ADG Group declined to comment.

ADG Group privatized 39 old film theaters previously owned by the Moscow city government for 9.58 billion rubles ($152 million) and pledged to invest about 40 billion rubles ($637 million) in their renovation, as many are in poor condition.

A spokesman for ADG Group told The Hollywood Reporter that the company is making all efforts to observe the previously announced schedule, under which renovations are set to begin in the first half of 2016.

ADG’s renovation project is set to be the largest revamp ever implemented in regards to movie theaters in Moscow. Under the privatization conditions, the investor can turn theaters into multi-functional cultural centers, but film exhibition has to remain one of their activities.

Vi is Russia’s largest TV ad seller, which works with major broadcasters Channel One, VGTRK and National Media Group .
