Building and history

CONTEST 48 CS polyester cutter-rigged yacht built in 1999 by Coniplex BV to the designs of architect Nissen Dickzaal Yacht Design. This Dutch construction is renowned for its flawless solidity, which can rival the quality of a Najad. The first owner wanted a yacht with every safety and comfort feature. Her hull is robust enough for all types of seas, and her equipment is oversized. The fin keel (6 T) is integrated into the hull. The boat has sailed the North Sea, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Adriatic Sea and then the Pacific with the second owners, who stopped their trip in Polynesia. Recent sails on hydraulic furlers with helm control - in a central cockpit - guarantee easy and safe sailing. Life on board is very pleasant, thanks to the light and airy interior.

Meet our floating home on the Ocean: SV Adhara - Contest 48CS

We bought her in beginning of July 2020 in Plymouth, UK in the middle of the pandemic and a nation-wide lockdown. Because of travel restrictions we basically decided to buy after a via FaceTime Call with the broker. In essence, we had decided on the type of boat we wanted long before. We had visited the shipyard of Contest in the Netherlands several times, and had also been on board a few 48CS models before, so we pretty much knew what we were getting ourselves into. And so we packed up our belongings, booked a one-way flight to the UK, and moved aboard our new home. Well. Maybe it was a bit more complicated than that 🙂

More Details and Upgrades

Designed by Dick Zaal and Georg Nissen and built in Medemblik at Contest Yachts Shipyard in the Netherlands, the Contest 48CS is designed for blue water cruising. She was built to Llyods standards from wood cored GRP in 1998. In total 64 of these boats were built and Adhara is No 15.

For us, the most attractive features besides the center cockpit and the very solid construction are the raised cockpit salon (CS), longitudinal galley down below, and the amazing master stateroom. We also like that she is cutter (two foresails) rigged and we can carry our dinghy on davits at the back. We even have a dedicated workbench for the inevitable repair works, which is very useful and we haven’t seen it on other 48CS models so far.

Dinghy and Outboard Engine: We quickly upgraded from a 5PS Outboard Engine to a 15HP 2-Stroke Engine. Gamechanger! We can now really explore our surroundings, drive into town if we’re anchored a little outside and also wakeboard. Yes! 

The Anchor We have kept the original Anchor that came with the boat. It’s called “Bügelanker” and so far we’re happy with it. It’s stainless steel and so is our 80m chain.

Accommodation Because Adhara has a center cockpit we have a really nice large aft cabin with a 150×200 double bed and “en-suite” bathroom (or “head”). There is a side cabin with 2 bunk berths that shares a head with the forward V-berth cabin. The long side of our Salon seating can be turned into a comfortable sea berth.
