The first yacht of the SW102 project, S/Y Almagores II was commissioned in the Deck Saloon version by an Italian owner who has been sailing for all of his life. Almagores II signaled his return to sailing after a powerboat. Interior and exterior styling were designed for modernity and timeless elegance. The experience of Southern Wind in semi-custom constructions allowed the owner to choose an interior layout with a large master cabin aft, two twin guest cabins midship and a double VIP cabin forward of the saloon. South African yacht builder Southern Wind has launched the 31.42-metre super-yacht christened Almagores II.

The yacht is the first hull of the yard's SW 102 series and succeeds the SW 102 DS series of the shipyard. The SW 102 DS offers 17% more interior volume compared to its predecessor. The design of the vessel's interior and exterior has been conceived by Nauta Design with Farr Yacht Design serving as the naval architect.

Almagores II comprises a master cabin, a VIP cabin, and a pair of twin cabins which have a combined capacity to house up to eight guests. The owner and guest areas are situated aft of the vessel. The yacht, built in carbon fibre, kevlar and epoxy resin, is powered by a single Cummins QSB 5.9 MCD engine.

Sailing yacht Almagores II launched by Southern Wind

On Sunday 5 May the first hull from Southern Wind's new 102 DS series was launched in Cape Town, South Africa. Commissioned by an Italian owner, this 31.42m sailing yacht has been christened Almagores II .

A successor to the successful SW 100 DS series, which saw nine launches between 2006 and 2009, the SW 102 DS was introduced in mid-2010 by the South African shipyard. The first hull was started a few months later, and the construction of a second hull is already under way with a launch slated for December 2012.

The SW 102 DS is a deck saloon sailing yacht with naval architecture by Farr Yacht Design and general design, exterior and interior styling by Nauta Design. The waterline length of the composite hull was increased by 1.35 metres to enhance its stability and performance.

The SW 102 DS has 17 per cent more interior volume than the SW 100 DS and a layout that accommodates eight guests in a master, a VIP and two twin cabins. However, the owners of the first two hulls have opted for completely different layouts, with owners and guests areas located aft on Almagores II , while the second hull follows the standard design with crew quarters aft and the master cabin forward of the mast.

The 36.3m single mast of the SW 102 DS will allow for a sail area of 477 m², and in light winds she will be powered by a single 305hp Cummins QSB 5.9 MCD engine.

Almagores II will start her sea trials soon, and she will make her official debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in September.

Launched in 2012 by the well known South African builder Southern Wind, the 31.4m (103´) sailing yacht Almagores II is a beautiful performance cruiser and the first vessel belonging to the successful SW 102 DS series. The Almagores II superyacht boasts naval architecture by renowned Farr Yacht Design, while both her exterior as well as interior are by Nauta Yachts.

31.4m luxury yacht Almagores II offers comfortable accommodation in 4 lovely cabins, including a spacious master cabin, 2 double cabins as well as one queen-size bed cabin, with crew quarters aft. These consist of 3 crew cabins, one of which can be used as additional Junior guest cabin. Almagores II yacht provides proportionally functional and comfortable owner as well as guests areas. Social life is encouraged not only by the roomy and stylish saloon but also by the ample guest cockpit and sun bathing area. 5 star meals to up to 10 guests can be served both inside or on deck, if necessary protected from the sun by the big sun-shade or from bad weather by the dodger. Privacy, comfort and luxury details are offered not only in the master cabin, but in the guest cabin as well. Built in composite, the SW 102 DS superyacht Almagores II is run by single Cummins QSB 5.9 MCD diesel engine. Her beam is of 6.9m (22´64´´) and her maximum draught is of 4.2m (13´78´´).

SW102 “Almagores II” Races Away From Cape Town on the “Cape2Rio Transoceanic Regatta”

SW102 Almagores II sailed back to her “birth place” in Cape Town recently to race away in the 16th edition of the Cape2Rio Yacht Race. First raced in 1971, the Cape2Rio is a 3,600 nm transoceanic regatta organized by Cape Town’s Royal Cape Yacht Club. Currently in its 16th edition, this race starts in Table Bay and ends in South America and is the longest offshore race held in the Southern Hemisphere. The race started on a clear and sunny day in 15 knots of westerly wind and dozens of spectator boats gathered to enjoy the show and cheer the teams on as they sailed away from Table Mountain.

While the waters of Cape Town are familiar to Almagores II, there are great unknowns ahead. Teams will have to face the challenges that come with transoceanic crossings and find routes that pass a high pressure zone predicted in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean without extending their courses too much. Over twenty teams are racing in this year’s edition with smaller boats getting a start a week ago and the larger and faster boats starting on the 11th. This part of the fleet ranges from the superyacht SW102 Almagores II to Giovanni Soldini’s stripped down racing trimaran Maserati Multi 70. Just as he did seven years ago for her maiden voyage and transfer from Cape Town to Genoa, the owner will be sailing aboard his yacht for the entire race.

Almagores II will be racing with a crew made up largely of the owners’ friends along with Captain Francesco Donati, who has been with the yacht since her launching. As per her previous participation in the ARC, Almagores II will be racing to raise funds for the Fondazione Theodora Onlus, a charity created to help hospitalised children. All funds raised will go towards sponsoring Dream Doctors, artists who have been trained to work with children and help them play and smile even through their illness. Almagores II

Almagores II is a custom sailing yacht launched in 2012 by Southern Wind Shipyard, in South Africa.

Southern Wind Shipyard was founded in 1991 by the Italian entrepreneur Willy Persico, the current Managing Director. The headquarter where yachts are produced is in Cape Town, South Africa, in the industrial zone, a few kilometres from the International Airport and it spreads over a 17.000 sqm area, of which 12.000 sqm under roof.

Almagores II measures 31.42 feet in length, with a max draft of 4.20 feet and a beam of 6.90 feet.

Almagores II has a composite hull with a composite superstructure.

Born in 1985 and acting initially as a yard, Nauta Yachts presented a style and an idea to the market which proved instantly successful, as they designed and built semi-custom sailing yachts, both innovative and soberly elegant. They produced sailing yachts which were both innovative at that time and featuring timeless beauty, such as the Nauta 54’, 70’ and 65’ semi-custom series.

Almagores II also features naval architecture by Farr Yacht Design.
