Fancy sitting back and enjoying some dramatic sailing footage from the comfort of your sofa? We pick the best sailing films on Netflix, Prime and more

netflix film yacht

Recent years have seen a proliferation of sailing films arriving on streaming platforms, with Netflix taking the lead on producing original content but there are many other sailing films on offer on the streaming services that can fulfil your sailing addiction from the couch.

So if you are looking for a documentary about the America’s Cup , thrilling dramas based on true life events then look no further (And just because I was banned from mentioning it in full, here by my fellow staff, you can find Waterworld for rent on Amazon , or on Netflix in some territories… just sayin’)

Best sailing films on Netflix

Untold: The Race of the Century

Another big Netflix production to be released last year, this documentary on the 1983 America’s Cup is bursting with iconic footage and up-close interviews with major players. The story of the 1983 America’s Cup is legendary to those with even a passing interest in sailing, seeing John Bertrand’s Australia II crew beating Dennis Connor’s American Liberty crew to wrest the America’s Cup from the New York Yacht Clubs grasp for the first time in 132 years – the longest winning streak in sporting history.

Even though we all know what happens, it’s still edge of the seat stuff and you can’t help but be reminded (or introduced to) the dizzying drama, which so captured the world and the Australian nation that it led the then Prime Minister of Australia, Bob Hawke to claim: “Any boss who sacks someone for not turning up to work today is a bum,” following the famous victory.

This unflinching documentary film tells the story of Tracy Edwards ’ all-female Whitbread Round the World Race campaign, through raw interviews telling of the personality clashes and huge pressures the team were placed under.

It’s an emotional watch, with fantastic footage from the maxi fleets racing mid-ocean: highly recommended.

True Spirit

The latest sailing film from the streaming giant, True Spirit , takes a look at the story of Jessica Watson one of the the most famous sailors from the late Noughties and early 2010’s phenomenon of multiple teenagers bidding to become the youngest sailor to sail around the world.  Jessica Watson, who set off from Sydney in 2009 aged 16, completed her loop of Antarctica – and a dip north across the Equator in the Pacific Ocean – to return an all-Australian hero after 210 days at sea.

The film is a dramatic retelling of Watson’s story and attempts to tread the fine line between staying true to her story and picking drama out of the narrative. Watson’s story is undoubtedly intriguing and any film taking on the challenge of conveying he long, slow, and arduous experience of the solo adventurer is always going to struggle to weigh realism with drama. But for the most par this stays true enough to the story to make for a satisfying viewing experience.

Adrift  is based on the book  Red Sky in Mourning  – Tami Oldham Ashcraft’s true account of sailing into a Pacific hurricane, dismasting, and then sailing solo under jury rig for 41 days alone to Hawaii.

The true story is astounding but the film plays pretty fast and lose with the facts. For pure entertainment it is still well worth hunting out and the terror of the extreme conditions does come across on the screen. You get to marvel as Tami manages to solve the catalogue of near voyage-ending disasters – no matter how implausible some of it might seem.

Pure escapism, and a reminder that when the chips are down there is usually a way out.

Best sailing films on Prime

This critically acclaimed documentary, by the makers of Touching the Void , tells the tale of the 1968 Golden Globe Race and how Donald Crowhurst falsified his position before mysteriously disappearing. There are impressive amounts of original footage to enjoy over 50 years later.

The 2017 cinematic telling of the 1968 Golden Globe Race , in which Colin Firth delivers a stand-out performance as the complex maverick entrant Donald Crowhurst. There’s a strong emphasis on the family narrative to draw in non-sailing viewers, but the yachting scenes were carefully researched and convincing.

It stands above many other sailing films as a pure viewing experience – helped along by Firth’s considerable talents. For those of us who already know the tragic story of Crowhurst there nothing here to fill in any of the gaps, as you’d expect from a broad-appeal drama, but you cannot help but be moved to relive the story once again.

Morning light

This was a real revelation when it came out and remains a solid documentary.

Fifteen young sailors embark on six months of training with the ultimate aim to sail a TP52 across the Pacific Ocean taking part in the TRANSPAC.

The premise is that this young, inexperienced crew (made up of 18-23 year olds) sailing  Morning Light  race the 2,300 miles against some of sailing’s top professionals.

The whole thing was funded by Roy Disney and remains a stunning testament to the rigours of racing and sailing offshore, and how much can be achieved by young sailors give a chance.

Best sailing films elsewhere

Chasing tokyo.

Chasing Tokyo is available to stream from the RYA and is an emotional watch. Filmed over a full year, it follows the British Sailing Team athletes as they readied themselves for the strangest Olympic Games in history – and the parents and partners who were left behind when the sailors headed out to Tokyo.

The film crews had unprecedented access to the sailors as they navigated lockdowns, covid testing, and disrupted preparations, and the medal hopefuls candidly shared their dreams and fears. It’s an insightful view of the strange balance of tension and monotony, life-changing highs and soul-crushing lows, of life as an Olympic athlete.

The documentary gives an intriguing glimpse inside the ‘medal factory’, the machinery of the British Sailing Team which has made it consistently the most successful Olympic sailing team in the world. The legacy of London 2012, and the importance of the team’s home base in Portland – with all its quirks and characters – stands out.

Must watch viewing for anyone with an interest in the physical and mental toll the Olympics can take on professional athletes.

This one takes a bit of detective work to find, but the full documentary is hosted online and well worth a watch. In contrast to True Spirit , it’s made up of real videos shot by teen Laura Dekker as she sailed around the world in 2010.

Without cinematic production and following Dekker’s stopping route it’s a much less dramatic view of sailing around the world, though no less gripping for it, and a fascinating insight into a remarkable teen. Those who came away from True Spirit frustrated by some of the dramatic license taken may well want to watch this.

It’s impossible to watch  the Untold: The Race of the Century story – or indeed any America’s Cup film – without referring back to Wind , the 1992 movie telling of how America lost, and won back the Cup.

Like any Hollywood interpretation there are a few cringeworthy moments, and I wouldn’t recommend watching it with a sailmaker, but it’s a warm-hearted film with some great 12-Metre race scenes, and the memorable catchphrase “Hoist the Whomper!”.

25 sailing movies for when you’re knot shore what to watch

We share some of our favourite best sailing movies, from Hollywood blockbusters and indie films to illuminating documentaries

I still hang on to the rather fanciful notion of sailing in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race . Until I pluck up the courage (and the funds), I’ve been busying myself with more realistic nautical escapades.

From  tall ship sailing off the west coast of Scotland  to  sailing the Whitsunday Islands  in Australia , more and more of our travels have taken place on the water.

However, until I make the leap from weekend warrior to blue water sailor, I’ll have to make do with films, books and daydreams.

With that in mind, I’ve put together a list of the best sailing movies I’ve seen. What follows is a broad mix of modern and classic, indie and feature, drama and documentary film. Whatever their style, these flicks are thoroughly wet and wonderful.

And, I’m sorry about the pun, but you know, ship happens.

best sailing movies

Listed in no particular order, these nautical movies include terrifying ordeals of tragedy, inconceivable stories of survival, turbulent tales of adventure and wild journeys of discovery – perfect for a night in on a dry and comfy sofa.

1. Kon-Tiki (1950) Let’s start with one of the best sailing movies ever made. In 1947, Heyerdahl and five others sailed from Peru on a balsa wood raft. This is the classic Academy Award winning documentary of their astonishing journey across 4,300 miles of the Pacific Ocean.

21. The Mercy (2017) Starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz, this is certainly no heroic tale. Instead, it’s the dramatisation of the bizarre story of amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst and his attempt to pull off one of the greatest hoaxes of our time: pretending to be the first to sail singlehandedly around the world!

22. Deep Water (2006) Following on from the above, Deep Water is a British documentary about the remarkable story of the first Golden Globe round the world yacht race , focusing on the psychological toll it took on its competitors – particularly one Donald Crowhurst.

Epic new survival thriller becomes number one movie on Netflix

Epic new survival thriller becomes number one movie on Netflix

The survival film has dropped on netflix and has taken the number one spot.

Anish Vij

A newly released survival film has stormed straight to Netflix's number one spot and we can't work out why.

Set in the Caribbean, the movie follows Naomi (Mădălina Diana Ghenea), a round-the-world yachtswoman, who sets out on a solo trip to meet her boyfriend, Jackson ( Ed Westwick ) in Grenada .

However, her three-day sail aboard 47-foot yacht 'The Serenity' takes an unexpectedly turn when a storm swerves her offtrack to an uninhabited island.

After managing to find survivors who are clinging to the shattered remains of a boat, she learns that these people are in fact savage drug traffickers played by Stany Coppet, Macarena Gómez and John-Paul Pace.

The group then force Naomi to dive down into the hull of the sunken wreck to retrieve 350 kilos of cocaine, where she is confronted by a frenzy of great white sharks .

Take a look at the trailer for Deep Fear below:

Although the 2023 film has charged to the top of Netflix 's Top 10, Deep Fear only has a 13 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

And viewers aren't convinced on the movie, despite the promising premise.

One wrote: "Great scenario if they had had some money to actually hire capable actors and a film crew.

"Despite the bad acting, insignificant technical advising means all screenplay for either diving or sailing are p**s poor. Great movie if you are fighting through insomnia.

"I watched it out of curiosity and was amused at finding out all irrelevant facts and errors."

Viewers aren't convinced on the film, despite the promising premise.

A second added: "A very slow and boring movie.

"The acting was bad and the writing was so boring I about fell to sleep. The plot was the same tired shark plot that has been seen in every single movie since the beginning."

Another also wrote: "Perhaps there are some who will enjoy this film. Unfortunately, even though I am a die hard creature feature fanatic, I'm not one of them.

Deep Fear is available to stream on Netflix now.

"I can tolerate sharks on cocaine, and other plot holes, but the divers communicating by radio whilst underwater was something I couldn't abide. The movies greatest disappointment was that it was an exercise in deep boredom."

Though a few did enjoy the thriller, with one viewer writing on X: " Deep Fear is one of the best shark movies I've ever watched recently, especially after the Meg ."

While someone else added: " Deep Fear on Netflix get a 10/10 for me. Good movie."

If you want to check it out for yourself, Deep Fear is available to stream on Netflix now.

Every Adam Sandler Netflix Movie, Ranked

"I'll say one last inspirational thing to you; they can't kill you if you're already dead."

Adam Sandler is still one of the biggest comedy actors on the planet, even if his movies are very hit-or-miss. Sure, Happy Gilmore , The Waterboy , and 50 First Dates are legendary, but he's made many awful movies in his time: when it comes to Raspberry Award nominations, he's second only to Sylvester Stallone . Unfortunately, for every Punch-Drunk Love , there's a Jack and Jill (or three).

This trend has continued with Sandler's lucrative Netflix deal, first inked back in 2014 and was extended in 2020. His work with the streaming giant has yielded a few stinkers, many mediocre projects, and a handful of gems. The best of them are a reminder of Sandler's massive potential. The worst will make you want to tear your hair out. These are the most entertaining of the Netflix movies featuring Sandler in a lead or major supporting role, ranked.

11 'The Ridiculous 6'

Released: 2015.

As its title suggests, The Ridiculous 6 is a Western comedy riffing on movies like The Magnificent Seven and The Hateful Eight . Sandler plays Tommy "White Knife" Stockburn, a man raised by Native Americans who discovers his true heritage after his long-lost outlaw father, Frank Stockburn ( Nick Nolte ), reappears in his life. When Frank is kidnapped by a gang of bandits led by Cicero ( Danny Trejo ), Tommy sets out to rescue him. Along the way, he encounters five half-brothers he never knew he had.

His zany siblings are burro rider Ramon ( Rob Schneider ), the un-hangable Lil' Pete ( Taylor Lautner ), reclusive moonshiner Herm ( Jorge Garcia ), Danny (Luke Wilson), the washed-up former bodyguard of Abraham Lincoln ( Dan Patrick ), and saloon pianist Chico ( Terry Crews ). The goofy premise aims at being a good slapstick time but consistently fails. As a result, The Ridiculous 6 was excoriated by critics and currently holds a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

10 'The Week Of'

Released: 2018.

The Week Of follows the chaos leading up to the wedding of the respective children of Kenny Lustig (Adam Sandler) and Kirby Cordice ( Chris Rock ). Kenny, a hardworking middle-class father, is determined to give his daughter Sarah ( Allison Strong ) the wedding of her dreams, despite his financial struggles. On the other hand, Kirby, a successful surgeon, offers to cover the expenses but struggles to connect with his son, Tyler ( Roland Buck III ).

Rather than let Kirby contribute to the wedding, Kenny stubbornly insists on paying for everything himself. Much of the humor stems from his various schemes at organizing the event on the cheap, like enlisting his 12-year-old nephew as the DJ or getting wacky relative Charles ( Steve Buscemi ) to release bats as a distraction (don't ask). The cast is strong (the hilarious Rachel Dratch also appears in a supporting role) but they are let down by an under-cooked script. The Week Of may not be as atrocious as The Ridiculous 6 , but it's in some ways even more disappointing, since it falls short of its potential.

9 'Sandy Wexler'

Released: 2017.

Sandy Wexler (Sandler) is a talent manager working in Los Angeles during the 1990s. Despite his unorthodox methods and peculiar personality, Sandy is dedicated to his clients, who are mostly struggling entertainers on the fringes. His life takes an unexpected turn when he discovers Courtney Clarke ( Jennifer Hudson ), a singer performing at an amusement park. Unlike most of Sandy's clients, Courtney actually has talent, so he sets out on a mission to make her a star. In the process, he naturally develops feelings for her.

There are interesting ideas here, especially around the challenges of mediocre performers accepting that they will never make it big. The recreation of the '90s is also well done. However, Sandy Wexler suffers from two fundamental problems: it's bloated at 131 minutes long and, simply put, it's just not that fun. The slight plot would have been fine if it was dotted with solid jokes, but they are few and far between.

The 10 Best So-Bad-They're-Good Movies on Netflix

8 'the do-over', released: 2016.

"You only live twice, right?" Max (Sandler) convinces his old pal, Charlie ( David Spade ), a meek and downtrodden bank manager, to join him on a wild journey to escape their mundane lives. They fake their own deaths and start fresh with new identities. There's one snag though: they accidentally assume the identities of two deceased men who turn out to have dangerous connections to the underworld.

The goofy chums are soon in over their heads, dealing with far more excitement than they had bargained for. The Do-Over clearly wants to be a mistaken identity movie like Dumb and Dumber or Date Night but lacks the fun or warmth of either. The gags are juvenile, which would be fine, except they're also simply lackluster. Once again, it's a pity, since Sandler and Spade have had great comedic chemistry in the past. Not even the entertaining appearance by Kathryn Hahn as Max's ex can salvage this one.

7 'Hubie Halloween'

Released: 2020.

This horror-themed comedy takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, during Halloween. The hapless Hubie (Sandler) is a delicatessen employee who is mocked by almost everyone in the town. Police sergeant Steve Downey ( Kevin James ) makes Hubie an "AUU" (auxiliary undercover unit) in an attempt to get him out of his hair, but Hubie takes to this role with zeal. When people begin disappearing, Hubie becomes the unlikely hero as he sets out to solve the mystery and protect his neighbors. His investigation involves haunted houses, a self-proclaimed werewolf, and a vengeful kidnapper.

Hubie Halloween is veritably stuffed with talented performers, including Julie Bowen , Rob Schneider, Ray Liotta , June Squibb , Kenan Thompson , Steve Buscemi, Shaquille O'Neal , and Maya Rudolph . Nevertheless, it mostly wastes them, producing only a few charming moments. While not a travesty on the scale of The Ridiculous 6 , the film did not go down well with audiences. At that year's Razzie Awards, Sandler received a nomination for Worst Screen Combo (for "Sandler and His Grating Simpleton Voice"). Ouch.

6 'Murder Mystery'

Released: 2019.

This comedy mystery centers on husband and wife Nick (Sandler) and Audrey Spitz ( Jennifer Aniston ). Nick is a cop while Audrey is a hairdresser with a passion for murder mystery novels. During a European vacation, the couple are invited by the wealthy Charles Cavendish ( Luke Evans ) to come aboard his family's yacht. There, they meet a collection of colorful characters like billionaire patriarch Malcolm Quince ( Terence Stamp ), Quince's son Tobey ( David Walliams ), Cavendish's former flame Suzi Nakamura ( Shioli Kutsuna ), actress Grace Ballard ( Gemma Arterton ), and Quince's old bodyguard Colonel Ulenga ( John Kani ).

After Quince is found stabbed through his heart, the guests begin meeting grisly fates one by one. As they navigate a maze of suspects and red herrings, Nick and Audrey must use their wits to unravel the mystery before they become the next victims. Knives Out , this is not, but Murder Mystery is a decent flick for those who enjoy this subgenre, with charismatic performances and a decent story.

The 10 Best Netflix Original Animated Movies

5 'murder mystery 2', released: 2023.

"Team buffoon wins again." In the sequel, Nick and Audrey have started their own private detective agency and have landed a case that could put them on the map. They attend the wedding of their rich friend Vikram "The Maharajah" Govindan ( Adeel Akhtar ) on a private island, only to discover his bodyguard dead. Soon after, Vik is abducted by two cloaked figures and spirited from the island by boat. The kidnappers demand a $70 million ransom.

The police arrive, but the Spitzes start digging into the matter on their own. The suspects include bride Claudette ( Melanie Laurent ), Vik's ex, Countess Sekou ( Jodie Turner-Smith ), sister Saira ( Kuhoo Verma ), business associate Francisco ( Enrique Arce ), and even the negotiator Miller ( Mark Strong ). Ultimately, the mystery is a way of connecting the gags and action set pieces but, for a movie like this, that's not a bad thing. It makes for breezy if not particularly essential entertainment.

4 'You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah'

This coming-of-age story focuses on best friends Stacy Friedman ( Sunny Sandler ) and Lydia Rodriguez Katz ( Samantha Lorraine ). They're dealing with the awkwardness of 7th grade and the usual challenges of puberty. However, after an embarrassing incident at a party and Katz's revelation that she is dating Stacy's crush Andy ( Dylan Hoffman ), the friendship turns rocky. Meanwhile, Stacy, anxious about her future, also clashes with her parents as her bat mitzvah approaches.

It's an enjoyable comedy-drama about family, friendship, and growing up. Notably, Sandler's family members play several of the lead roles. Stacy and her older sister are played by Sandler's daughters, while Sandler's wife Jackie plays Lydia's mom. You get the impression that they were having a good time on set together. In addition, while this is not an out-and-out comedy, Sandler still has some hilarious moments, like when he yells in exasperation, "That's why we fought the Nazis? So you could have a mojito bar?” More of this, please.

3 'Leo'

"Guys, you don't have to be afraid of change." Leo is an animated kids' movie, in which Sandler (who also co-writes) voices the title character, a 74-year-old tuatara . He's the class pet to a bunch of fifth-graders at Fort Myers Elementary. Each weekend, a different one of the kids gets to take Leo home, and he reveals to them that he can talk. He listens to them, learns about their lives, and offers advice, like literal animal therapy. However, after Leo is abandoned on a field trip, it's up to the kids to help him.

Sandler shows off his trademark goofy voice here, which is either delightful or annoying, depending on the viewer. Bill Burr is better as Leo's friend Squirtle, a Florida box turtle. Either way, the simple but catchy musical numbers and sweet story will surely appeal to many young viewers . Leo may not be S-tier animation, but one could definitely do a lot worse.

2 'Hustle'

Released: 2022.

Sandler turns in one of his more restrained performances of recent years in this sports drama. He is Stanley Sugerman, a down-and-out basketball scout with a strained home life. He sees a chance to change his fortunes after coming across a talented, unknown player in Spain named Bo ( Juancho Hernangómez ). Stanley brings Bo to the U.S., hoping to sign him, but a host of personal and professional obstacles stand in their way.

Bo has a troubled past and a violent streak. He reveals to Stanley that he was previously convicted of aggravated assault. The two of them set about working on Bo's mental toughness as well as his skill on the court, bonding in the process. They're great to watch together. In particular, Sandler received critical acclaim for his work. Reviewers praised his everyman appeal, understated emotion, and obvious affection for the source material. Sandler has long been a basketball fanatic, so it's not surprising that he would give his all to a project like this.

1 'The Meyerowitz Stories'

One of Noah Baumbach 's strongest movies , The Meyerowitz Stories revolves around a dysfunctional New York family, led by patriarch Harold Meyerowitz ( Dustin Hoffman ). He's a once-prominent sculptor struggling to accept his fading relevance in the art world. Harold's adult children, played by Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller , and Elizabeth Marvel , each carry their own emotional baggage as they muddle through their relationships with their father and with each other.

The performances are great across the board, but Sandler may be the highlight. In contrast to Stiller's successful but emotionally distant businessman Matthew, Danny (Sandler) is a lovable underachiever who moves in with his dad after separating from his wife. He changes a lot over the course of the movie, too. This could have been a two-dimensional character - the screw-up man-child - but, instead, Sandler plays Danny with a ton of subtlety. He conveys so much with just body language or a facial twitch. It's a reminder of what Sandler is capable of, under the right circumstances.

TIRES. Shane Gillis as Shane in Episode 101 of TIRES. Cr. Courtesy of Netflix © 2024

At this month’s Cannes Film Festival, Francis Ford Coppola and Kevin Costner each unveiled passion projects they opted to finance themselves after institutional backers initially passed. This week, three auteurs make a trend — except instead of putting his own funds toward a deeply personal, sweeping epic, comedian Shane Gillis has made a lewd, bro-y workplace comedy set at a Pennsylvania tire shop.

Popular on Variety

The “Tires” setup recalls a version of “The Bear” stripped of racial diversity and any shred of romanticism. Two cousins, hapless manager Will (co-creator Steven Gerben) and gleeful shit-stirrer Shane (Gillis), struggle to keep the family blue-collar business afloat. Entrusted by his father, a looming offscreen presence, with a location of his local chain of Valley Forge auto shops, Will runs through a succession of harebrained schemes designed to boost sales. Like Gillis’ stage act, “Tires” indulges the fratty, puerile humor of bored young men while also making it the butt of the joke. The season starts with Will launching a cringey initiative aimed at empowering female customers — “You’ll go, girl!” — and ends with Shane strong-arming him into hosting a bikini carwash.

“Tires” keeps Gillis’ longtime crew of collaborators intact. “Gilly and Keeves” partner John McKeever, credited only by his surname, directs all six episodes and serves as Gerben and Gillis’ third co-creator. The cast remains unchanged from the original pilot, casting fellow veterans of the Philadelphia comedy scene Chris O’Connor and Kilah Fox as Will and Shane’s coworkers. Besides Gillis, the best-known series regular is likely stand-up Stavros Halkias, who plays district manager Dave and rose to prominence on the now-defunct podcast Cum Town. The origins of “Tires” may recall “Horace and Pete,” the grim drama Louis CK bankrolled himself prior to his own exile from the spotlight, but it lacks that show’s highbrow cachet of having an Edie Falco or a Jessica Lange in its cast.

In both locations and length — or rather, lack of either — “Tires” shows its bootstrapped roots. Gillis’ pockets may be deep, but it’s still clear less than two hours of total material taking place in a handful of rooms didn’t arise from a Netflix level of resources, even if that’s where viewers can find the finished product. The style isn’t full mockumentary, but McKeever favors hand-held camerawork and close-up shots that (accurately) invoke the wince factor of early episodes of “The Office.” The stakes are microscopic: Will’s big, potentially business-saving idea is offering a discount on tires to upsell customers on other services after they’ve agreed to the lower price. The wistful piano theme music hints at a sentimentality that largely isn’t there, and indeed falls flat when it arrives. We’re here to watch these people dunk on each other, not because we care about how many brake pads they need to move until Will’s dad approves of him.

But when refracted through an ensemble and a fictional narrative, Gillis can’t be as precise in toying with the line between offensive and insightful as he is onstage. The classic Gillis joke deploys his meathead energy — his favorite filler word is “dude” — to toy with audience expectations about his beliefs. (He opens “Beautiful Dogs” by turning an applause line about American exceptionalism into a bit about mass shootings.) “Tires” is less adroit and more straightforward. If anything, the blink-and-it’s-over season is an audition for a second, Netflix-funded round of episodes — and, sure enough, the company announced a renewal before the first had even aired. Perhaps an extended run could develop the rhythms of a long-running sitcom, be more artful in its risk-taking and more fully differentiate the characters beyond Shane and Will. For now, “Tires” is a step forward, but not a full one.

All six episodes of “Tires” are now streaming on Netflix.

Charter yacht SARASTAR stars in new Netflix movie 'Murder Mystery' 2019

By Rebecca Bradbury   1 August 2018

The 60m/198ft motor yacht SARASTAR from Mondo Marine will feature in the 2019 Netflix movie Murder Mystery starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.

Filming for the new movie began aboard SARASTAR at the end of July in the harbour of Santa Margherita Ligure in Genoa , Italy , as well as in other idyllic locations along the Italian Riviera  such as Portofino .

In the film, Sandler plays an NYC cop who takes his wife (Aniston) on a long-promised trip to Europe. A chance meeting on the flight with a mysterious man (Luke Evans) gets them invited to an intimate family gathering on the superyacht of elderly billionaire Malcolm Quince.

This is where the Mondo Marine build, which was launched just last year, makes an appearance. Quince is murdered on board the yacht and the married couple become prime suspects in the modern day whodunit.

The movie marks the reunion of Sadler and Aniston, who starred together in 2011’s romantic comedy Just Go With It . It will be the Friends star’s Netflix debut, while the American actor has been involved in a number of projects for the streaming service.

In fact, Sandler has spent the past few years making Netflix his exclusive feature film home, thanks to a deal which was upped last year to include four more films.

This year, Netflix original The Week Of , in which Sandler teams up with Chris Rock, has been released and, in 2017, Sandy Wexler and highly-acclaimed The Meyerowitz Stories , both starring the actor, hit the service.

In addition to Sandler and Aniston,  Murder Mystery  also features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Gemma Arterton, Luis Gerardo Mendez, Shioli Kutsuna, David Walliams, Adeel Akhtar, John Kani, Olafur Darri Olafsson, Danny Boon and Terence Stamp.

Walliams has shared some images of his fellow cast members on social media. One photo reveals the two leads filming on the foredeck helipad of luxury yacht SARASTAR, while the actress poses in one shot with her hair and makeup team and another sees Sadler trying to keep cool under an umbrella.

Other photos see the British actor taking some time away from the set to soak up the picturesque Italian scenery and restaurant offerings with Arterton and Olafsson.

Other images taken by Walliams reveal the sleek lines of the charter yacht up close as well as from an elevated viewpoint along the Italian Riviera. Also visible is why the coastline stands out for its tranquil blue waters, rocky green cliffs, bright pink pops of flowers and pastel-hued houses.

Welsh actor Luke Evans also posted some photos on Instagram of himself cruising through Portofino and standing on the helipad. He shared a film clip too, which shows the crew in action aboard the motor yacht .

Other deck spaces on board SARASTAR include a large open-plan sundeck with a green marble-topped bar, dining facilities and no end of lounging areas, and an inviting beach club with a drop-down swim platform where guests can relax even closer to the ocean on their yacht charter .

She also impresses with her interior, which thanks to Luca Dini Design, exudes high-sheen glamour.
