Elena Nappi's 'Carapace' superyacht concept

If you’re fortunate enough to own a superyacht , chances are you want to show it off. But for at least one yacht designer, the greatest luxury a boat can offer may be the ability to disappear.

Witness the new superyacht concept dreamed up by naval architect Elena Nappi. Dubbed the Carapace, the hybrid vessel is engineered to cruise the high seas both above and below the water: The 256-foot boat doubles as a fully functional submarine capable of diving to depths of 985 feet for up to 10 days at a time.

This New 131-Foot Aluminum Catamaran Concept Can Take on a Transoceanic Expedition

Even if this was your run-of-the-mill traditional superyacht, the Carapace would stand out, thanks to a breathtaking tech-meets-organic aesthetic with flowing curves that travel from bow to stern. Like many of its peers, the yacht features several beautiful on-deck entertainment areas, including a beach club complete with a pool. But what really makes Nappi’s boat so unique is its light aluminum superstructure, which can be completely sealed up so that it can operate underwater. The designer believes this capability will offer travelers a truly private getaway. It could also appeal to power brokers who might need an added level of secrecy for important meetings.

“The world of luxury submarines is one of the last frontiers in the field of experimentation, and perhaps the hybrid will be the language of the future,” Nappi told CNN . “Very often yacht owners are looking for original solutions to be able to offer their friends and their family something special, and certainly that of a diving cruise of this type is something unprecedented in the superyacht market.”

Elena Nappi's 'Carapace' superyacht concept

In addition to its submarine capabilities, the three-level boat will also be fully equipped with all the luxury amenities you’d expect from a superyacht. Whether the boat is operating above or below the water, guests will have access to a lounge, large dining room, bar, spa and health club, among the onboard amenities. And just as a reminder that you are underwater, each of these spaces will offer jaw-dropping views of the surrounding marine life when the vessel is submerged.

The boat will offer solid performance specs as well. According to Nappi, Carapace will be powered by a diesel-electric and fuel cell system that gives it a range of 2,400 miles. This powertrain would allow the boat to reach a top speed of 16 knots on the surface and 12 knots below it.

Of course, Carapace is only a concept right now. But it is a glimpse at a very exciting future for superyachts. It will also be an expensive one: If Nappi’s creation ever becomes a reality, expect it to have a price tag that runs into the hundreds of millions. Check out more photos of the boat below:

Tour the World’s Most Luxurious Submarine Superyacht

By Dave Banks

Photography by Migaloo

If yacht owners really want to put everyone at port to shame, they should consider sailing on the Migaloo Private Submersible Yacht. A concept yacht created by Migaloo, an Austrian design and engineering firm, the line of luxury superyachts offers a range of bespoke underwater crafts that vary in size. After sailing the new Migaloo submersible yacht on the water, owners can close up the decks and turn the craft into a fully operational submarine.

“What we are attempting to do is to create a living space where exterior and interior interact in harmony,” says Christian Gumpold, managing director and head of design at Migaloo. With rooms that open to the ocean for dining alfresco while above water, and large viewing galleries for taking in the marine life when submersed, the Migaloo creates that harmony. What’s more, the firm reaffirms its focus on luxury with optional amenities that include helipads, swimming pools, movie theaters, elevators, wine cellars, libraries, and private terraces.

Of course, safety is a major focal point as well. Each superyacht will be built to U.S. Navy SUBSAFE safety standards, which ensure that the interiors will stay watertight and the vessel can recover from unanticipated flooding. According to Migaloo, solitude is a major point of interest for yacht owners, which is why the ability to dive beneath the surface and out of view might have great appeal. “Privacy is a big issue on superyachts,” says Gumpold, “our answer to this concern is simply submerging the vessel into complete privacy.”

11 of the coolest submarine-carrying superyachts

If you haven't already heard, submarines are officially the coolest piece of kit to keep on board. With room for up to six guests and tailor-made to fit the weight and height restrictions of a superyacht tender garage, exploring the underwater world has never been easier for the superyacht set. Discover 11 of the best sub-carrying superyachts on the water...

Shinkai , meaning deep sea in Japanese, was purpose-built to accommodate a U-Boat Worx C-Researcher 3 submersible which the owner already had in build at the time of signing the contract with Feadship . Finished in racing red, the submarine sits flush with the aft deck and is the first to be fitted with an elevator to lower passengers into their seats. A heavy-duty crane with an eight-metre reach is fitted nearby to launch and recover the sub.

More about this yacht

The ice-classed La Datcha is an intrepid explorer built for adventures in the world’s wildest regions and is equipped with toys for every climate. A pair of helicopters - twin Airbus H125s – can whisk guests off for an afternoon of heli-skiing, while a three-person Triton submersible, made to match the mothership, is suited to cruising in warmer climes where the sea below is bustling with aquatic life. La Datcha is available for charter with Imperial.

Yachts for charter

Legend started life as a Soviet icebreaker and, after receiving the full superyacht treatment in 2016, now cruises as the ultimate luxury explorer. Legend ’s toy box is impressive – to say the least – but her submarine is by far the coolest toy in her collection. The U Boat Worx C Explorer 5 submersible can take up to four guests (plus a pilot) down to a depth of 200 metres. She is also capable of carrying up to 19 crew on board, plus an extra 10 expedition crew including a doctor, ice-pilot, and expedition leaders, for an adventure like no other. Legend is available for charter with Y.CO.

Nicknamed the ‘ world’s largest floating toy box ’, the 66 metre Hodor is the first of a new breed of shadow cats designed to make the storage, launch and recovery of toys and tenders as slick as possible. Her top deck alone carries a 7.3-metre Novurania catamaran RIB, nine-metre Metal Shark landing craft, and an insane 388 Skater race boat. Below, in the belly of the beast, she carries nine jet skis, four Yamaha ATVs, four Yamaha TW200 trail motorcycles, a hobie cat and two laser dinghies and a Seamagine Aurora-3 submersible. The submarine garage is housed in the centre of Hodor , and its launching system uses air casters to locate from the garage to the beam cranes.

Game Changer

The 72 metre Game Changer was built in 2017 based on the same patented Damen Sea Axe hull as Garcçon , but with a 2.04 metre stern extension for a helicopter hangar. Among the many toys and tenders stored on her aft deck is a Wajer 38 dayboat, a 10.5 metre military-style RIB and a three-person U-Boat Worx C Explorer submarine.

Stern (previously Cecilia ) stands out among this list of sub-carrying superyachts. Not only is she the smallest but, unlike most of her much larger counterparts, the submersible isn’t stored on deck. On Cecilia , a three-person U-Boat Worx SYS3 (complete with a Jules Verne-esque manipulator hand – which clutched a bottle of Bollinger during her Monaco Yacht Show debut) is actually stored in the beach club. It simply slides out on a sophisticated crane installed overhead.

Yachts for sale

Serial superyacht owner, adventurer, environmental warrior and treasure hunter, Carl Allen owns a seriously impressive fleet of toys, tenders and yachts, known collectively as the Allen Exploration fleet. His 50 Westport, Gigi , travels with a 55 metre Damen support vessel in tow, named Axis (previously Fast & Furious) , and is key to Allen’s primary mission to study plastic pollution and fish migration and secondary mission to hunt for treasures lost at sea. The fleet also includes an Icon A5 aircraft and a Triton 3300/3 MKII submarine, both stored on Axis ’s deck.

U Boat Navigator

U Boat Navigator is a 24 metre expedition yacht designed to provide the ultimate dive experience to all guests that step aboard. Well-equipped for a subaquatic adventure, U Boat Navigator is home to two Triton submersibles, including a custom three-person Triton 3300/3, the same model used to film the BBC’s award-winning Blue Planet II. Meanwhile, a second, slightly smaller sub acts as a support vessel. The yacht also runs a full dive centre set-up along with tri-mix facilities, a decompression chamber and a tender to whisk guests to the best dive spots. U Boat Navigator is available for charter with Fraser .

The 63.69 metre explorer SuRi has recently undertaken a two-year expedition to map the ocean floor as part of a wider mission, in partnership with Cookson Adventures, to create a complete map of the ocean floor by 2030 . The mission’s submersible of choice is a seven-seater U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7, capable of reaching depths of 300 metres and piloted by Ofer Ketter. Other toys include a Eurocopter AS350 helicopter, SeaRey seaplane, nine metre Stan-Craft Wooden Speedster and two BMW GS650 motorcycles – to name a few.

OceanXplorer

To call OceanXplorer a superyacht might be a stretch. You won’t find any sundeck swimming pools or two-storey master suites with sweeping views out across the foredeck. But that doesn’t mean she’s not “super”. The 87 metre expedition vessel started out life as a commercial surveying ship before she was converted into the ultimate research vessel by filmmaker Mark Dalio in partnership with non-profit organisation OceanX. The vessel is home to two twin Triton submarines that can dive to a depth of 1,000 metres, launched and recovered via an A-frame crane on the stern.

It looks like something straight out of a James Bond movie, but this concept might just signal that the future of superyachts is sub-aquatic.

Dreamed up by Italian-based naval architect Elena Nappi, the hybrid vessel can travel on both the surface of the sea and underwater.

Known as the "Carapace," it submerges to a depth of 985 feet for up to 10 days at a time, offering amazing views of marine life.

Nappi, who came up with the innovative concept after years of nautical experimentation research, says it represents a "new class of mega yachts," bringing together the cosiness of luxury yachts and the "privacy" of immersion navigation.

Hybrid vessel

"The world of luxury submarines is one of the last frontiers in the field of experimentation, and perhaps the hybrid will be the language of the future," Nappi says in a statement.

"Very often yacht owners are looking for original solutions to be able to offer their friends and their family something special, and certainly that of a diving cruise of this type is something unprecedented in the super yacht market."

Carapace, which would be powered by a diesel-electric and fuel cell system, is designed to have a light aluminum superstructure that measures 256 feet in length.

It would hold three deck levels, with VIP cabins, a lounge, a spa, a bar and health club among the onboard amenities.

Pioneering design

Nappi envisions it being hired for private trips, as well as business meetings that require "complete secrecy."

Although there's no indication of a price as yet, it's thought the vessel will set buyers back some hundreds of millions.

But anyone hoping to get this hands on this mega yacht should sit tight.

At present, the Carapace is merely a concept, and Nappi predicts it will be a long while before anything like it hits the waters.

"If we make a comparison with the automotive sector, it is not hard to understand that the road to this type of boat is still very far away," she adds.

"The first electric car was built in 1884 and is only on the market today, so it is impossible to think that a harness like this could be put on the market before 100 years."

Nappi is currently a designer for Italian shipyard Fincantier, but the company is not involved in the Carapace project.

Meet Carapace - superyacht which transforms into a submarine

Meet Carapace, a 78-meter-long, ultra-luxury yacht that looks like it fell out of a James Bond movie…

Conceptualized by thirty-four-year-old Italian designer, Elena Napi, this yacht moves through the water like a normal ship, but can also be transformed into a fully functional submarine. The idea behind this radical yacht design may remind you of Captain Nautilus and sounds like the perfect billionaire toy.

The decadent hybrid ship is currently under development in Italy and is expected to be completed by 2021. According to the designer, Carapace has a maximum floating speed of 16 knots, so it can sail on a regular basis, as well as all other yachts of sailing dimensions, while it can be transformed into a submarine with a maximum depth of 300 meters.

As Elena states, the luxury hybrid ship has a lightweight aluminum superstructure and is powered by a diesel-electric powertrain, with a fuel cell system. “The Carapace Yacht is designed for both private and public markets. Its interior offers top-notch amenities such as a VIP cabin, lodge, spa, bar and gym. The company working on the development of this ship says it is designed to accommodate passengers with reduced mobility. ” For now, we do not have information yet on how much this yacht will cost when it's finished, but we believe the price will reach several hundred million dollars

What an underwater superyacht could look like

by Mariska Buitendijk | Oct 17, 2022 | News , Ship design , Shipbuilding , Submarines , Yachts

Underwater superyacht designed by U-Boat Worx

Dutch U-Boat Worx has revealed the design of a 1250-tonne, 37.5-metre yacht submarine, the Nautilus. The underwater superyacht could be built within thirty months and comes with a price tag of EU 25 million.

Since Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea came out in 1870, people have been dreaming of a luxury yacht with dive capabilities. Since then, inventors produced a lot of impressive concepts. Unfortunately, not one of these designs has ever been realised.

U-Boat Worx designs and builds small submersibles, and says it has now finally succeeded in engineering a realistic combination of luxury and safety in a fully certified private submersible.

The diesel-electric Nautilus has a depth rating of 200 metres, with a surface cruise speed of 9 knots and an underwater speed of 4 knots. Once ordered, the company can deliver a Nautilus within thirty months.

Yacht features

When functioning as a boat, the Nautilus offers a massive sundeck equipped with a freshwater pool, a bar, and a luxurious dining table. This al fresco arrangement is retracted before the submersible slips below sea level.

The Nautilus interior features a 50-m2 dinner and lounge area with four circular windows. Each with diameters close to 4 metres. The proposed design has a master bedroom and four staterooms, as well as sleeping quarters for up to six crew. The vessel will also be fitted with a fully equipped galley, while the interior layouts are fully customisable.

Underwater for four days

The superyacht submarine will be able to stay under water for up to four days. At cruise speed, the underwater endurance is six hours. When not in use, the Nautilus can be docked at any quay that can accommodate its 6.5-metre draugh. The Nautilus has a starting price of EUR 25 million.

A newly invented, completely pressure-resistant electrical tender is stowed under the Nautilus’ aft deck and will stay outside while diving. This tender, the Aronnax, may also be used for transporting five scuba divers underwater to the intended dive spot.

‘People that have decided to buy a yacht will now have to consider if their vessel of choice can also dive down to 200 metres,’ says U-Boat Worx Chairman and Founder Bert Houtman. Elena Nappi’s Futuristic Submarine-superyacht Hybrid Concept

The concept for the CARAPACE yacht is sent straight from the future.

The 78m vessel has been conceptualized to double as a submarine that can dive to 985 feet.

Elena Nappi, an Italian based naval architect, has dreamed up this futuristic vessel.

The hybrid is designed for cruising the high seas and exploring the underwater world with its marine capabilities.

Many superyacht owners may enjoy showing their boat off on the water surface.

But there are a select few who would be willing to pay the estimated $300 million price tag to submerge beneath the ocean and buy themselves the privacy of a vessel that can disappear underwater for up to 10 days at a time.

2 1

CARAPACE yacht interior

The interior of the CARAPACE yacht has all the features that one expects from a luxury superyacht.

The vessel has on-deck entertainment areas that include a beach club and pool.

The three-level boat has several indulgent amenities that can be accessed whether the boat is above or below the water.

There is a lounge, large dining room, a bar, a spa, and a health club.

In addition to the onboard amenities, the underwater views promise to be breathtaking.

The CARAPACE yacht designer Elena Nappi told CNN , “The world of luxury submarines is one of the last frontiers of experimentation, and perhaps the hybrid will be the language of the future.

Very often yacht owners are looking for original solutions to be able to offer their friends and their family something special, and certainly, that of a diving cruise of this type is something unprecedented in the superyacht market.”

4 1

The exterior of the CARAPACE yacht stands out amongst the traditional superyacht crowd, with organic lines meeting futuristic technology.

The light aluminum superstructure makes the exterior truly unique.

These are also the features that can be completely sealed up, allowing the vessel to submerge beneath the waves.

Nappi believes that this submergible feature will offer guests a truly private getaway while on board.

The hybrid vessel will be able to stay underwater for up to ten days.

This privacy feature will likely appeal to business people who want an added level of secrecy for important meetings.

7

Specifications

Nappi is designed to be powered by diesel-electric and fuel cell systems that will give the CARAPACE yacht a range of 2400 miles.

The yacht’s top speed will be 16 knots on the surface and 12 knots below the surface.

If the creation ever comes to life, the yacht hybrid will have a price tag in the hundreds of millions to achieve the futuristic design.

lexus debuts LY680 yacht with expanded swimming area and flybridge at japan boat show

Lexus expands ly680 luxury yacht’s flybridge.

At the Japan International Boat Show 2024, Lexus unveiled the 1/20 scale model of its new LY680 Luxury Yacht , an upgrade of the previous LY650 water vehicle . Lexus’ latest model comes with an expanded swimming platform and flybridge to accommodate more guests on deck. The extended flybridge, which measures 1,400mm, now features a spacious lounge area and a dedicated barbecue grill, while the swimming platform has been expanded by 700mm to accommodate additional guests who wish to take a dip in the sea.

When Lexus conceived the idea for its LY680 Luxury Yacht, even before its debut at the Japan International Boat Show 2024 , the design team aimed to create a water vehicle that would feel like a ‘tranquil hideaway at sea.’ They imagined it as a moving space where ‘discerning customers could feel free and at ease.’ The resulting concept was a three-level luxury yacht equipped with living spaces that make the LY680 feel like a deluxe apartment on the sea.

The passengers enter the Lexus’ LY680 Luxury Yacht, and when they descend, they can find a kidney-shaped sofa nestled in one corner. Adjacent to the sofa is a desk with a plush seat, tailored as a workspace at sea for those who still need to hustle. Panoramic windows adorn the space, offering views of the waters and allowing natural light to flood in. The use of dark, varnished wood adds a sense of opulence to the interior, and across from the sofa and desk, a semi-circular bed invites passengers to relax while watching the waves and scenery through slanted windows.

Walking up to the control area, the captain of Lexus’ LY680 Luxury Yacht navigates the water vehicle with ease through the expansive set of windows. The openness of the space is further enhanced by plush seating, two of them reminiscent of cinema seats. Even the wooden floors help brighten up the overall aesthetic. During the Japan International Boat Show 2024, where yacht enthusiasts could view the 1/20 scale model of the LY680, Lexus revealed that the luxury yacht can accommodate up to 15 passengers across three rooms with six beds.

For those interested in specifications, Lexus’ LY680 Luxury Yacht is expected to be equipped with Twin Volvo IPS 1350/1050 engines and have a fuel tank capacity of 4,012 liters and a fresh water tank capacity of 852 liters. Production of the luxury yacht will be carried out by the Horizon Group, based on the Toyota Production System. Lexus has announced that yacht enthusiasts can reserve their water vehicle model through Toyota Marine sales offices in Japan and select dealerships. As of publishing, Lexus aims to deliver the first batch of the LY680 Luxury Yacht in Spring 2026, with international availability pending based on customer demand.

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

What’s the $130 million ‘phoenix ii’ superyacht really like.

Phoenix II is for sale

After spending quite a bit of time aboard Phoenix II , the 295-foot-long superyacht designed by Winch Design and built by Lürssen , during the Monaco Yacht Show with Chris Cecil-Wright of Cecil-Wright Partners , I’m going to come right out and say it. No other yacht achieves such opulence, style and over-the-top superyacht luxury quite like it.

PHOENIX II celebrates NYC in art deco style

But Phoenix II was not the first yacht Winch Design developed and Lurssen built for an owner who is fascinated by skyscrapers and art deco style. In fact, he was so happy with his original Phoenix —smaller at just under 200-feet, launched in 2004 with a French Art deco-inspired interior—that they were not surprised when the wish list for the new yacht called for another opulent art deco interior.

PHOENIX II is built for style and fun

“The owner wanted Phoenix II to reference the boom time of 1920s New York and the art-deco architecture of that period,” says Jim Dixon, Winch Design Managing Partner & Creative Director, Yachts & Aviation. “It’s much stronger in character than his previous yacht.”

Disney Cruise Line Reveals Name And Theme Of New Ship

Why you should add a land extension to your alaska cruise.

As you can see in these photos and video, the results speak for themselves.

“ Phoenix II is an extravagant and heavily personalized boat,” Dixon adds. “And I still hold her up as one of the best projects we’ve ever done.”

PHOENIX II pays homage to NY art deco

Iconic landmarks, from the skyscrapers on the bar stools in the sky lounge bar to the massive figurehead that looks like it could have been taken directly from the Chrysler Building, pay homage to New York City. Everything, from the door handles to the cutlery, was custom-designed specifically for the yacht. The yacht also had a significant refit in 2019.

PHOENIX II features multiple hot tubs and lounge areas

There’s a Steinway grand piano in the formal salon, in addition to silk carpets and a ceiling adorned with hand-gilded phoenix birds. The dining room is brilliantly lit from above like a Broadway stage. The large forward bulkhead is emblazoned with a six-paneled relief sculpture of musicians. And the foyer is inspired by Radio City Music Hall.

The owners study

Other notable features include the rivetted-aluminum spiral staircase, the Radio City-inspired cinema with popcorn maker and a gym overlooking the aft helipad (there is a second helipad on the foredeck).

“The owner is a consummate host and Phoenix II is all about dining, music and entertainment,” says Winch Design founder Andrew Winch. “He likes to think that his dinner guests become the orchestra, while he was seated at the head as the conductor.”

PHOENIX II dazzles

Needless to say, I was blown away by the level of craftmanship and attention to detail I found onboard. But I was also a bit curious to find out why Chris Cecil-Wright was so happy to give me the grand tour of the yacht in Monaco that’s very much for sale now. (Cecil Wright Partners shares this listing with the lead broker Burgess Yachts .)

“ Phoenix II very much represents the type of yacht that our company has been working to be known for,” he said. “She’s large, custom built, in immaculate condition and from a top Northern European pedigree yard; in this instance Lürssen.

Dining in style onboard Phoenix II

“We won the listing for Phoenix II having closed the sale of Kismet , a 95-meter (311-feet-long) sister ship of Phoenix II , in only 4 months. An industry record for this size of yacht. Turnaround time from listing to completion is something that our company is becoming renowned for; with an average time on market of 4 months and only 3 months for Feadships both unmatched in the industry.

The main deck lounge onboard PHOENIX II.

“An additional attribute is that we work as a collective. Yes, we are a boutique business, but as the client you will receive the attention of multiple team members to ensure that you are looked after to the nth degree.”

Makes sense to me. We all want to be looked after to the nth degree, now don’t we?

Paul Alexander lived in an iron lung for more than 70 years. Here's how he spent his life

Paul Alexander drinking his coffee with his caregiver Kathryn Gaines who is eating cereal

Paul Alexander, a polio survivor who became known as "the man in the iron lung" died on Monday, aged 78.

He contracted polio as a boy, leaving him paralysed from the neck down.

Unable to breathe on his own, Paul was placed in a metal cylinder known as an iron lung, where he would spend the the majority of his life.

He would later go on to earn two university degrees, practice law for 30 years, write a memoir and, in the last few months of his life, become a social media star on TikTok.

Here's a look back at his extraordinary life.

Caught up in an outbreak of largely forgotten disease

Paul contracted polio when he was six years old.

Polio — short for poliomyelitis — is a virus that has been eradicated in many countries, with Australia officially declared polio-free in 2000.

More than 20 years on, the disease is relatively unknown to younger generations.

But in 1952 when Paul contracted the virus, the US was in the midst of its worst polio outbreak in history.

The World Health Organization (WHO) statistics show more than 3,000 people died from polio in the US the same year Paul caught the disease.

Polio is a highly contagious viral infection that invades the gastrointestinal tract and nervous system.

One in 200 polio infections leads to permanent paralysis, the WHO says.

Of those, it's estimated 10 to 15 per cent die when their breathing muscles become immobilised.

Paul could have been one of them.

But when his condition deteriorated, a doctor performed a tracheotomy — when a slit is cut in a patients' neck to allow for breathing tube to go in — to save his life.

He was put into a negative-pressure ventilator — better known as an iron lung — to keep him breathing.

Not only was he paralysed from the neck down but the tracheostomy meant he was unable to speak.

The tracheostomy was temporary but Paul has relied on a machine to breathe for him ever since.

He holds the Guinness World Record for the longest period for a person to make daily use of an iron lung.

What is an iron lung? How does it work?

An iron lung is a breathing machine, which has since been replaced by modern ventilators.

It's a long, air-tight metal chamber, which a patient lies inside with only their head poking out.

With a few windows on the side to people to care for the patient inside without opening the sealed chamber, it looks a bit like a submarine.

Air was pumped in and out it, which changed the air pressure inside.

The changes in air pressure forced air in and out of the patient's lungs in a process called external negative pressure ventilation,  the UK's Science Museum website says .

When air was sucked out, the patient's lungs would automatically expand with air — effectively breathing in.

Then air was blown in, the pressure would cause the lungs to deflate — breathing out.

"The rhythmic ‘whoosh’ of air from the iron lung became the reassuring sound of patients breathing," the museum says.

These machines were typically only used by a patient for a few weeks or months until they could gradually recover.

But fortunately they were built to last because some patients — like Paul — depended on them for decades.

Could he leave the iron lung?

While Mr Alexander spent much of his time in the mechanical respirator, he was not completely confined to it.

In his early years, he learned a technique called 'glossopharyngeal breathing', otherwise known as 'frog breathing'.

It was a technique that required Mr Alexander to gulp air into the lungs using his lips, tongue and throat as the main pump.

This gulping action looks like a frog gulping, hence the nickname.

Paul Alexander in his iron lung at home while a nurse washes his face

To motivate him, he was promised a puppy if he managed to frog breathe for three minutes.

That's where he got the name for his memoir  Three Minutes for a Dog: My Life in an Iron Lung.

It took him a year to master this skill, he wrote.

And after three years of practice, he was able to leave the iron lung for a few hours at a time in a wheelchair.

He became a lawyer

At 21, Mr Alexander became the first person to graduate from a Dallas high school without ever physically attending a class.

He graduated with almost straight A's.

After repeated rejections for two years, he eventually was offered a place at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and later, went to law school at the University of Texas at Austin.

In a video on his TikTok account, which he set up in January this year, Mr Alexander explained how he managed to make it through such an intense area of study.

"I was confronted by a couple of problems that turned out to be major problems, and that was I can't write," he said.

"That means I can't take notes.

"And I couldn't record, cause it takes way too long to listen when you're getting ready for your exam.

"So right off I had to decide how to handle all of the work and the information which is massive.

"What I did was I got my mind ready, I listened very carefully, and remembered what I heard.

"That was a lot of concentration, but yet I found it to be the most effective and rewarding process amongst all of them."

When the time came to take the exam to be admitted as a lawyer, he wasn't able to use his iron lung.

So he "frog breathed" his way through the gruelling exam in his wheelchair.

Mr Alexander explained that this was "the least laborious" of all the "dreadful" options he had to sit the test.

He passed the exam and went on to become a lawyer in Dallas and Fort Worth.

He would represent his clients in court in a modified wheelchair that held his paralysed body upright.

Then he'd return to the machine.

He ended up working as a lawyer for 30 years.

"You can't believe how many people walked into my law office and saw my iron lung and said: 'what is that?'," he told the Guardian in 2020 .

He wrote a memoir with his mouth

It took five years for Mr Alexander to write his 155-page memoir.

"I wrote the book with my mouth and a pencil typing away at a computer," Mr Alexander said on TikTok.

"It was the first book I've ever written and it was kind of a major thing in my life.

"The incredible part of doing it was that it took off all over the world, all the way from Russia, Belize, and Europe, and now millions of people know my name today."

Paul Alexander in his iron lung with his memoir next to him as he talks about it

Why did he stay in the iron lung?

Iron lungs are a rarity in 2024.

The ventilators most commonly used today are much more compact machines which typically sit by a patient's bed and can be wheeled around.

While they don't encase a patient, they can be quite invasive.

"Artificial or mechanical ventilation involves sedating a patient, placing a tube into their airway, and using a mechanical ventilator to push air in and out of their lungs," Melissa Preissner and Stephen Dubsky explained in an article for Monash University .

Generally, this is a temporary measure.

A more permanent option allowed a patient to be conscious, however, it required the breathing tube to inserted via a hole in their neck.

But this technology wasn't available when Paul was young.

And by the time newer machines were developed, he'd grown accustomed to his "old iron horse".

The breathing technique he mastered allowed him to spend part of his day outside the iron lung, he said.

Paul "never wanted a hole in his throat again", according to The Guardian.

However, in his last few years, he had been almost permanently confined to the machine.

"As he got older he had more difficulties in breathing outside the lung for periods of time so he really just retired back to the lung," longtime friend Daniel Spinks said.

While there have been countless medical advancements in the decades since his diagnosis, there's still no cure for polio.

But thanks to intensive global vaccination campaigns, the disease has been largely kept at bay for decades.

This was a cause Paul championed and still spruiked online in his final months.

He became a TikTok star in his 70s

Paul only began posting videos on TikTok this year.

He tagged himself as "Polio Paul" and called his account "ironlungman".

In less than three months, his account amassed nearly 400,000 followers.

And even after his death, his videos continue to reach millions.

As of Friday evening, his videos had attracted more than 6 million likes.

Remembered as a 'bright star'

Paul's brother Philip Alexander said he was someone who "commanded a room" in a statement posted to social media.

"It was an honour to be part of someone's life who was admired as he was," he wrote.

"He touched and inspired millions of people and that is no exaggeration.

"He loved good food, wine, women, long conversations, learning, and laughing."

Mr Spinks said Paul's positivity had a profound effect on those around him.

"Being around Paul was an enlightenment in so many ways," he said.

"He was just one of the bright stars of this world."

Fans also took to social media to express their condolences.

"Forever rest easy Paul Alexander, you were the most inspirational person I have had the enjoyment of following forever fly high," one TikTok user wrote.

"You were extremely inspirational and you honestly helped me change my perspective on life, you really will be missed," another said.

‘Below Deck’ Sails Into a New Era

With a different captain at the helm and new production elements, the reality show about charter yachts is switching up its style.

A man in a crew member suit stands behind a bar and tends to flowers in a vase.

By Shivani Gonzalez

Starting a new season of “ Below Deck ” can be similar to returning to summer camp as a kid — you know it’s going to be fun and that you’ll be in the same environment, but some of the people will be different and you’re not quite sure what the vibes will be.

This time around, in particular, feels that way because for the first time in the show’s 11-season run, Captain Lee Rosbach is no longer at the helm. It’s a pivotal moment for a franchise that has become one of the most popular entities in the sprawling universe of reality TV since premiering on Bravo in 2013 . The show’s appeal was built on endless romances between various crew members (“boatmances,” as they came to be known), horrible charter guests and some sort of passive-aggressive fight about how many shackles of the anchor chain should be in the water. And there was always Rosbach presiding over the drama as he trudged around the boat, reeling off one liners like “I’m madder than a pissed-on chicken” and “we screwed the pooch so many times we should have a litter of puppies running around.”

At the center of the show now is Kerry Titheradge (the stern yet goofy captain of “Below Deck Adventure” fame), who is managing the Motor Yacht Saint David with the cheeky chief stew Fraser Olender by his side.

With that change in captain, the energy on the boat — both onscreen and off — is different, according to Olender.

“Lee has a no B.S. attitude, which I love with him,” Olender said in an interview. “With Kerry, he taught me a lot and sort of forced to me confront issues directly with my team, work them out, as opposed to making executive decisions too soon.”

This shift in management style changes the central conflict — whereas the drama once focused on the captain swiftly kicking out any unpleasant crew member (as we might have seen with Rosbach), the drama now focuses on the whole crew trying to get along (since Titheradge gives people those second chances).

Additionally, Olender noted that the captain’s relationship with the crew can also affect the drama on board.

“Captains absolutely do get involved, whether they know it or not,” Olender said, adding that for the crew, everything is about “trying to impress your captain.”

This phenomenon plays out early in the new season when the lead deckhand, Ben Willoughby, called out a fellow crew member over the radios about not wearing a life vest — something he easily could have done in private. The drama that followed became an interpersonal conflict between the two of them, both with the ultimate goal of impressing Titheradge. (Of course, the two deckhands had kissed on the previous crew night out, which is more in line with the “Below Deck” drama viewers are used to.)

For “Below Deck” showrunners, the changeovers in the cast allowed them to rethink what the show would look like.

From the season premiere, it was immediately apparent that Rosbach’s absence wasn’t the only change this season: The filming is sleeker, the daily, multicourse meals prepared by the chef are given their own glamour shots and the cameras sometimes cut to the perspectives of yachties running around on deck and through the galley.

“Our showrunner, Lauren Simms, is an avid consumer of all different kinds of media,” Noah Samton, a senior vice president of unscripted current production for NBCUniversal, said in an interview. “She pitches us different ideas on how to stylistically evoke different feelings and change the mood a little bit of ‘Below Deck’ without removing what really works.”

Moving through the rest of the season, and potentially through seasons to come, Olender is aiming to bring a cutthroat management style while also bringing affection for his stews, all with his signature British humor.

On Bravo’s side, there are changes in the works for the other “Below Deck” spinoffs — including “Sailing Yacht,” “Mediterranean” and “Down Under” — which collectively, have 26 seasons. Specifically, Samton said that “Down Under” is currently filming and that even though fans should be ready to see new things, the show will stay true to its original concept.

“These are real yachties doing a real job so you have to stay within those confines because the audience isn’t going to want anything that is too produced or fake,” Samton said. “So we have to find ways to reinvent while staying true to the original concept of the show.”

And as Olender said: “I’m sure that every year if I were to work with this franchise again, that I’ll be thrown a collection of total chaotic and disastrous stews — that’s what makes it watchable.”

An earlier version of this article misquoted Fraser Olender, the chief stew of “Below Deck.” He said, “I also feel like Kerry this season. ... Lee has a no B.S. attitude, which I love with him,” not “I feel like Kerry this season, as opposed to Lee, has a no B.S. attitude, which I love with him.”
