As a long-time auction house professional, I’ve come across countless Yacht-Masters of all references. I developed this list using this background, along with my experience using my choice homages and many more that didn’t cut it. 

I also deliberated with colleagues, watch collectors within and outside of my clientele, and watch specialists in my field. On top of that, I spent countless hours reading and watching reviews, and diving into forums and Reddit threads. As such, All perspectives and priorities are considered in this list.

In addition to looking like the Yacht-Master , the Steinhart GMT Ocean 39 Ceramic boasts the combined qualities of a dive watch and a GMT. It has a 24-hour hand, a complete calendar, excellent Super LumiNova, and a ceramic bezel that’s durable and resistant to fading.

The Ocean 39 isn’t just a great homage, but a compelling value proposition of a tool watch.

Thanks to its generously-sized bezel, you might think it is the Yacht-Master at first glance. As any quality homage though, its thoughtful differences allow it to stand on its own. 

The GMT hand adds a pop of color on top of its extra functionality. Plus, it may not come in as many sizes as its source material, but the 39mm is a reasonable middle-ground between large and small cases that suits most, if not all, wrists. 

It even comes in a two-tone “Chocolate” version reminiscent of the gold and steel versions of the Yacht-Master.

The Ocean 39 runs on the Elaboré version of the already reliable SW200, which is leveled up in accuracy and precision.

What I Like

What I Don’t Like

• The Steinhart stock buckle is friction-based, for a less-than-smooth action. You also need an extra 16mm end link if you want to add a replacement.

What Do Other Reviewers Say?

Reviewers are impressed with the flawless finishing, particularly in how perfectly the bezel lines up with the indices. Many also rave about how comfortable this watch is to wear, crediting it to the universal 39mm case size and smooth lugs.

Many mention that while the 21-click bezel is crisp and strong, it can be hard to grip due to how thin it is.

Overall, the Ocean 39 is popular in watch forum communities , many agreeing it punches way above its price point.

On the function front, this watch has respectably long-lasting lume, and runs on a popular Seiko movement. The NH35A is fairly accurate. More importantly, it will last a long time without needing service thanks to its low rate of six beats per second.

Oris Divers Sixty-Five

Like the Yacht-Master, the Oris Divers Sixty-Five is a robust tool watch with a graduated scratch-resistant ceramic bezel. The Oris, however, is rugged in different places on its body than the Yacht-Master is. The utilitarian rubbers strap offers a less sleek aesthetic than a stainless steel oyster or president would.

Meanwhile, thanks to the Divers Sixty-Five ’s vintage leanings, the bezel is thinner with smaller numbers and the crown is guardless, for a sleeker and simpler look. Still, all of the practical qualities are there from the double-domed AR-sapphire to the Swiss automatic movement.

Longines HydroConquest

Neither the Longines HydroConquest or the Yacht-Master are afraid of big features. Both watches have similar bezels and are designed for amphibious wearers.

The HydroConquest , however, is distinguished in looks because of its gigantic six, nine, and 12 markers. If you love the wide look of the Yacht-Master , but are also attracted to aviation-inspired designs, this Swiss automatic is for you.

Breitling Superocean 44

• Water Resistance:  1000m

The Breitling SuperOcean 44 has bulky features, just like the Yacht-Master. Unlike the Yacht-Master though, Breitling built this watch to be extra beefed up all-around. Its lug-to-lug size is a considerable 52.7mm and, as a true diver’s watch, this guy boasts 1000m of water resistance.

Aesthetically, the SuperOcean 44 has a more animated look to it. Its dial is matte, the indices are heavily outlined like an illustration, and the font for the 6, 9, and twelve look like a cleaned-up version of the BAM!s and POW!s in the ‘60s Batman show. It has fun features that don’t take away from its overall professional look.

With its impressive materials and extra functionalities, the Steinhart is our top pick Yacht-Master homage.

If you want to go the affordable luxury route, the Davosa Ternos and Gigandet Ocean King are both well-respected level-ups.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Alpha Yachtman , Pagani PD-1651 , and the Parnis Yacht Master are cheap but well-built look-alikes each with a distinct offering.

Even if you’re looking to get a Yacht-Master one day, it’s always worth trying out some homages before making the investment.

Is the Yacht-Master a dive watch?

With 100m of water resistance, the Yacht-Master is designed for sports on the water. Though this is enough for most swimmers, a true professional dive watch needs at least 200m of resistance.

Is the Yacht-Master the same as the Submariner?

No. While the Yacht-Master is built for sports near or on water, like boating, the Submariner is the dedicated pro-dive watch.

Luxury for Less: 20 Affordable Alternatives to Rolex Watches

Everybody wants a Rolex . It’s, after all, the most popular luxury watch brand the world has ever known.

It goes beyond the prestige of any other name in the watchmaking world, and this can be seen in the sales as well, making for a quarter of all Swiss watch sales back in 2020.

On the other hand though, due to their extremely high price tags, not everybody can afford a Rolex, which is why most people are left to look for Rolex alternatives.

There’s plenty of watches similar in styling and features to a Rolex, but very different in pricing, usually at least a few times lower.

If you’re curious what are the best affordable alternatives to Rolex watches, you’ve come to the right place.

The watches below are some of our favorites, and definitely the timepieces we recommend. 

There are in total thirteen Rolex watch models, some of them extremely cherished, and others a little less popular, and we’ve found alternatives to all of them. 

We’ll start this list with one alternative for each of the slightly less popular Rolex models (the Milgauss, Air-King, Sea-Dweller, Yacht Master, Cellini and the Sky-Dweller) and then we’ll give you two alternatives for the most popular Rolex watches (Datejust, Oyster Perpetual, Day-Date, Cosmograph Daytona, GMT Master II, Submariner and the Explorer).

Here they are, in no particular order:

• Rolex Milgauss Alternative: Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium

The Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium is a wonderful pick if you’re a fan of the Rolex Milgauss watch, which is a watch used by engineers and scientists all over the world for its anti-magnetic properties, able to withstand magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss, hence its name.

The Tissot version comes with the Powermatic 80 movement, based on the renowned ETA caliber 2824-2, but with some required upgrades.

One of these upgrades has seen the standard balance wheel replaced with one made out of silicon, which is entirely anti-magnetic.

Other features include an increased power reserve from 38 to 80 hours, and a customized rotor.

The watch itself strikes a good balance between a sports watch and a dress one, making it perfectly for every day use.

• Rolex Air-King Alternative: Citizen NJ0100

The Rolex Air-King is not as high priced as other Rolex watches, so there aren’t many alternatives to satisfy Rolex enthusiasts out there.

But there’s the Citizen NJ0100, with a similar simple design as the Air-King, a stainless steel flat three link bracelet, and automatic movement.

It’s a good and cheaper replacement, at least until you save up some money to be able to buy the real deal.

Rolex Sea-Dweller Alternative:  Tudor Pelagos

The Tudor Pelagos is still an expensive watch to be had, but it’s at least half cheaper than the Rolex Sea-Dweller is similar in appearance too.

Since Tudor is a sister company of Rolex, it makes sense they make really close alternatives, but more affordable, without skimping on quality.

Their Pelagos watch features a helium escape vent at the 9 o’clock position, which makes it efficient and keeps it ticking even deep underwater.

It’s got a 42 mm case, with a superb ceramic black dial and titanium unidirectional bezel, both covered with a luminescent coating.

The watch is COSC certified, and comes powered by the hand wound MT5612 Caliber, and has a good 70 hour power reserve.

• Rolex Yacht-Master Alternative: Invicta Pro Diver 9210

The Invicta Pro Diver 9210 is a wonderful choice for those in love with the Rolex Yacht-Master.

The Swiss brand, today based in Hollywood, Florida, it has focused on making affordable luxury since its inception back in 1837.

The watch in question is very similar to the Yacht-Master, almost identical, with a case size and dial design that match those of the Rolex.

The timepiece is powered by a Japanese NH35A automatic movement, which is visible through the clear case back.

The case itself has a depth rating of 200m, so you can even go diving with it.

Rolex Cellini Alternative:  Timex Marlin

A good alternative to the stylish Rolex Cellini watch, the Timex Marlin boasts a simple and timeless design, with a nice and clean dial, which makes for an overall elegant look.

The watch comes in several versions, with either a steel bracelet or leather strap, black or white dial, and the case in either silver or gold.

The case is 40 mm, with a water resistance rating of 30m, so you shouldn’t go swimming with it.

The heart of the watch is a 21 jewel automatic movement with a date complication shown in the aperture at 3 o’clock, and a power reserve of 40 hours.

• Rolex Sky-Dweller Alternative: Stuhrling Northstar GMT

The Stuhriling Northstar GMT is a superb timepiece, and one that comes with an aesthetic similar to that of the Rolex Sky-Dweller. It’s got the same features, with the positioning differing slightly.

The Rolex Sky-Dweller is known to be hard to replicate due to its many complications, but this Stuhrling comes close enough, with the same color scheme and those small red accents.

The hands and hour markers have the same shape as well.

On the other hand though, the Northstar GMT won’t have all the functions and complications of the Sky-Dweller, and it’s obvious since its price is just below $160.

But considering the price and the overall aesthetic similarities, it’s a very good alternative.

• Rolex Datejust Alternative #1: Burei Automatic

The Burei Automatic is a homage to the modern Rolex Datejust, with a very similar case shape and design, no crown guards, and a fluted bezel.

The dial has the same layout as the Datejust, and it’s got that oversized date window with magnifying lens at 3 o’clock.

The watch is powered by an automatic movement, and the dial is protected by sapphire crystal glass, so even if it’s a cheaper alternative to a Rolex, it doesn’t skim on quality materials.

• Rolex Datejust Alternative #2: Seiko SARB035

The Seiko SARB035 is a superb alternative variant for the Rolex Datejust.

It’s a premium timepiece with a better price tag, and has the very features found on the Rolex, like the case’s shoulders, the beveled edges, the finishing, boxy shape, and the polished bezel.

Inside there’s a Japanese automatic movement which beats 21,600 times per hour, and it can be admired through the case back.

The dial boasts elegance with its cream white background, and super finishes on the hands and the hour markers.

The o’clock date aperture comes with a metal frame around it for even more elegance.

• Rolex Oyster Perpetual Alternative #1: Seiko Prospex

Another Seiko, the Prospex , SPB243J1, is a superb watch on the more affordable side, as most Seiko’s are, but with that premium elegance and materials.

It’s a good alternative to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, but also the Datejust.

It comes with a 38 mm stainless steel case and bracelet, and a jet black dial that sets it apart establishing a nice contrast.

The dial features gold tone luminous hands and indices, adding to the overall elegance of the piece.

• Rolex Oyster Perpetual Alternative #2: Citizen Eco-Drive Black Titanium

While the Seiko Prospex above is priced somewhere above $700, the Citizen Eco-Drive Black Titanium comes in a lot cheaper at only around $200, and it looks the part as a Rolex Oyster Perpetual alternative.

The 41.5 mm case and the bracelet are both made from titanium, the black dial matches the design as it should, with silver tone hands and hour markers, plus a silver framed date aperture at 3 o’clock.

Rolex Day-Date Alternative #1:  Hamilton Jazzmaster Day-Date Auto

The very elegant Jazzmaster from Hamilton, in its Day-Date Auto variety, is a great looking and high quality alternative to the Rolex Day-Date.

The most impressive similarity is the day aperture placed at the 12 o’clock position like on the Rolex, making them alike.

The date window on the other hand is placed opposite to it, at the 6 o’clock position, unlike on the Rolex, where it’s at 3 o’clock.

Priced at around $845 and powered by the in-house ETA 2834-2 based H40 movement from Hamilton, with its impressive 80 hour power reserve, this is a watch to keep for a lifetime.

Or until you save enough money for the one it replaces.

Rolex Day-Date Alternative #2:  Seiko SGF206

The Seiko SGF206 has a stunningly similar design to the Day-Date, though some features are missing.

The day is placed in the same location as the date, instead of being up at 12 o’clock like on the Rolex.

Overall, and considering the very minimal price of around $250, it’s hard not to take it as a superb alternative.

Sure, the quartz movement doesn’t compare, but you won’t have troubles with it coming from Seiko.

• Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Alternative #1: Le Jour Le Mans

Le Jour is an older name in the watchmaking world, forgotten but resurfaced recently.

The Le Mans chronograph is a modern reissue of an older classic model from their lineup, and comes with plenty of interesting features, much alike the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona.

It also has very similar crowns, with the shape and the position matching those found on the Rolex.

Its price crosses way higher than the $1,000 mark, but it’s around ten times cheaper than the original Daytona.

Le Jour Watches

• Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Alternative #2: Dan Henry 1962

The Dan Henry 1962 is a nice and very modern take on the Daytona, with the three sub dials in the same position, but a more sharp and elegant dial design.

The crowns are in the same position as those on the Daytona, but they don’t have the same shape.

The black tachymeter dial adds a little bit more contrast, being matte black, and overall, you can’t go wrong with this watch.

It’s one of the most interesting chronographs that comes under $300.

• Rolex GMT Master II Alternative #1: Lorier Hyperion

If you’re after the look and feel of the first Rolex GMT Master from back in the days, look no further than the Hyperion from the New York based Lorier watchmaker.

It’s got that style and feel, though with a more subdued design and colors.

The features are interestingly alike, with an old school domed plexiglass crystall, and the lumed plexiglass bezel that’s very similar to the radium-lit bakelite bezel of the original GMT Master.

• Rolex GMT Master II Alternative #2: Tudor Black Bay GMT

Though it’s way pricier than most Rolex alternatives at over $3,700, the Tudor Black Bay GMT is probably the closest match in recreating the appearance of that Rolex GMT Master II.

That recognizable Pepsi bezel and the vintage aesthetic, plus the fact that it’s got a true GMT movement make this the closest thing to a Rolex.

It’s coming from the sister company, after all.

Rolex Submariner Alternative #1:  Gucci Dive

Gucci might not be the first name that comes to mind when thinking of watchmaking, and surely not one that comes as an alternative to Rolex, but their Dive model, is a solid and much cheaper alternative for the legendary Rolex Submariner.

Gucci Dive is a solid diver and a high quality watch overall, and that dial is strikingly similar to the Submariner.

The 40mm stainless steel case has a water resistance rating of 200 meters, so it’s the real deal. And considering that it’s priced around $850, it’s a worthy contender.

• Rolex Submariner Alternative #2: Orient Kamasu

The Orient Kamasu is a very good choice not only as an alternative to the Submariner from Rolex, but as a dive watch in itself, offering plenty of qualities for under $300, which is very rare these days.

It comes with an in-house automatic movement, a 41.8 mm stainless steel case, depth rating of 200m, sapphire crystal glass, and below, all the nice features that make the dial similar to the Submariner.

Rolex Explorer Alternative #1:  Seiko Alpinist

The Rolex Explorer is one of the most popular Rolex models ever created, and the market for alternatives is quite big, but the Seiko Alpinist easily stands out from the crowd for its astonishing similarities and the price tag of $750.

Part of Seiko’s Prospex watch line, the Alpinist is an impressive field watch that borrows plenty of design elements from the Rolex Explorer.

The simplicity of its dial makes it extremely likeable and elegant, and the Seiko Caliber 6R35 Automatic is a high performer with an impressive power reserve of 70 hours.

Rolex Explorer Alternative #2:  Vaer C3 Tradition Black USA Quartz

Coming in at just above $250, the Vaer C3 Tradition Black USA Quartz is an extremely good alternative to the Explorer, with that big triangle at 12 o’clock and the 3, 6 and 9 hour marker layout on a black background reminding exactly of the Rolex in case.

The 36mm stainless steel case also fits the profile, and the fauxtina lume, or the three link Oyster style bracelet also look the part.

Vaer Watches

A legendary brand like Rolex, with so many fans around the world, is sure to inspire other watchmakers to create their own replicas, in the hope that they would appeal to the masses who don’t have the buying power for a true Rolex.

7 Best Rolex Yacht-Master Everose Gold Alternatives

After seeing Alpha M’s beautiful grail watch which was the Rolex Yacht-Master Everose Gold, it definitely influenced me to consider one(yeah right…in my dreams). I’m drawn to the aesthetics of it and for me personally I like to vary the look in my collection and would prefer not to have too many overlaps. What’s unique about this look is the rose gold case, the black bezel and a black rubber strap making it look incredibly sporty and elegant. Since the price is way too out of range for a lot of people, naturally I would find other alternatives with a similar look and feel. Here’s a list of what I think is a good affordable alternative to it. Tell me what you think in the comments section below.

Steinhart Ocean One 39 Pink Gold

Steinhart is doing its thing again. Looking by far the most similar to the Yacht-Master, it comes with a reliable Swiss ETA 2824-2 movement. The 39mm pinkgold case has a screwed down crown and is water resistant to 300 meters. The double anti-reflecting coatings sapphire glass also has a date magnifier and a ceramic bezel insert. The indices and hands are coated with Super Luminova BGW9 lume and is paired with a 20mm black leather strap.

Seiko Prospex SRPC44

This Seiko watch is also nicknamed the Turtle because of its cushion case shape. It’s hugely popular and now it has a gold tone case. This automatic watch uses a 4R36 movement, has day and date display at 3 o’clock, awesome Lumibrite lume, screw-down crown and is water resistant to 200 meters. It has a Hardlex crystal and is 45mm in diameter and 13.3mm in thickness.

Seiko Prospex SSC618P

This is more of a diver chronograph watch but is still very eye-catching with it’s rugged look. The case is stainless steel in rose gold coating matching the hour and minute hands and also the Seiko logo at the dial. This is a 43.5mm diameter, 13mm in thickness watch with screw-down pushers and is water resistant to 200 meters. It’s powered by a solar V175 quartz movement which makes this a reliable beater and is paired nicely with a black rubber strap.

Seiko Astron SBXB055

With radio-controlled watches dependent of limited radio transmitters around the world, we see more watches move to GPS signals from satellites to adjust time automatically based on your location. This Seiko Astron is rather large at 45mm diameter and 13.3mm thick. It’s powered by the 8X53 solar powered movement which can last for 6 months if the sun went down. It has a sapphire crystal and is 100 meters water resistant. Other features include perpetual calendar, world time, dual-time, etc. The case is a nice rose gold finish, a black world timezone bezel and paired with a black rubber strap.

Casio G-Shock GST-W120L-1A

This affordable G-Shock looks rugged and cool with a slew of features like solar powered, LED light, shock resistant, radio signal time calibration, world time, stopwatch, etc. Part of the G-Steel series, this is a rather large watch at 59.1mm(lug to lug) x 52.4mm(diameter) x 16.1mm(thickness). This particular one comes in a tough black leather strap and has a more classic look with 3 subdials.

Casio G-Shock GST200CP-9A

This is another G-Steel series but it’s powered by normal batteries instead. It has LED light, world time, stop watch, 5 daily alarms, auto-calendar and is also 200 meters water resistant. The case looks to be more towards yellow gold instead of rose gold and is paired with a black rubber strap that is smeared with some colors to create that dirty rugged look. It seems to have the exact same dimensions as the GST-W120L 59.1mm(lug to lug) x 52.4mm(diameter) x 16.1mm(thickness).

I see this including the G-Steel series is a little similar to the Hublot watches. Nevertheless this is a stunning looking watch with a carbon fibre bezel with Bluetooth time-sync with your mobile device, dual dial world time, solar powered, stopwatch and water resistant to 200 meters. Limited series with the 35th year anniversary engraving on the casebook. Dimensions are 58.1mm(lug to lug) x 53.8mm(diameter) x 14.1mm(thickness).

I got interested in that watch through alpha’s video aswell and after that one video you mentioned I finally know what whatch that is. Coincidentally I recently saw the Seiko 5 SRP560J1 on eBay, which in my opinion is the best homage and most look-a-like to the Yacht-Master everose gold. Take a look at it! 🙂

Making the case: The Rolex Yacht-Master is the most versatile collection of all their ‘Professional’ models

For most, the day after Christmas is Boxing Day. But, for some professional sailors, December 26 marks the beginning of the  Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, the race, which was first held in 1945, and has been sponsored by Rolex since 2002, consists of yachts ranging from 30 feet (9.14 metres) to 100 feet (30.48 metres), with crews both professional and Corinthian, racing through 628-nautical miles (1,163 kilometres) of open water. It is an absolutely gruelling race in which merely completing it is a massive accomplishment. But, I am no sailor myself. So when I heard about the race, my mind immediately wandered to the Rolex Yacht-Master.

As I sat pondering the collection, I began to think about just how underrated the Yacht-Master is compared to other “Professional” Rolex references like the Submariner, Daytona, and GMT Master II. So today I want to make the case that the Yacht-Master is not only massively underrated, but also the most versatile collection of all the “Professional” models. Normally in the Making The Case  column, we present arguments for and against. But, this time around I will make my case by highlighting five Yacht-Master watches (four currently in production, and one discontinued model that is readily available on the secondary market) that, at least in my mind, show why the argument for my case is quite strong.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42

Previously, the Yacht-Master 42 was only available in stealthy white gold. At Watches & Wonders Geneva 2022, Rolex finally introduced not only a yellow gold Yacht-Master 42, but also the first yellow gold Yacht-Master ever outfitted on an Oysterflex rubber bracelet. Lately many manufactures have been ignoring yellow gold, sticking with rose and white gold only. This is due to the fact that, in some eyes, yellow gold is considered dated. While some say dated, I say classic. It is hard to beat the purity of yellow gold. Ultimately buyers now have the best of both worlds, you can get the Yacht-Master 42 in white gold if you want to fly under the radar or in yellow gold if being a casual “G” is your vibe. Fingers crossed though that a stainless-steel Yacht-Master 42, or even a RLX Titanium version which we have already seen a prototype of, makes its debut in 2023.

Rolex Yacht-Master 37/40 Everose Gold

But Zach, what about rose gold? What if 42mm is too big for my wrist.  Well, you are in luck. Not only is the Yacht-Master available in an Everose case, but also in 37mm and 40mm sizes. The Everose model has yet to make the jump to 42mm, but the 37mm and 40mm configurations are every bit as up to spec as the 42mm. It utilises Rolex’s latest in-house automatic 3235 calibre with 70 hours of power reserve, it is also outfitted on the super comfortable Oysterflex bracelet, it follows the same visual theme with a fully polished case and stealthy matte black ceramic timing bezel, and it has a trip-lock screw-down crown secured Oyster case that is equally pledged with a depth rating of 100 metres – but could likely survive even greater depths. So, within this format you have three precious metal options and three case diameters. And the precious meets casual nature of being outfitted on a rubber bracelet makes the aesthetic, along with its size options, highly versatile.

Rolex Yacht-Master 37/40 Oystersteel and Platinum

But Zach, precious metal is totally out of my budget.  Well, while we wait for an Oysterflex-fitted Yacht-Master to be executed in steel or titanium, you still have Oystersteel and platinum options to work with as well. Available in 37mm and 40mm, on mixed finished oyster bracelets rather than on Oysterflex, the examples above are primarily made of 904L stainless steel. The platinum comes into play with the timing bezel, the insert made entirely of platinum. The gray ruthenium dial offers a really cool monochromatic look, broken ever so slightly by the turquoise Yacht-Master text and central lollipop seconds hand. If you are a New York Giants fan, or just simply prefer a more common blue dial with a pop of red, the configuration on your right is also available to explore. Both also utilise the 3235 movement as well.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 White Gold Falcon’s Eye

Rolex is known for incremental change, and, for the most part, a sombreness befitting of their reputation for incredibly solid robust performance watches. But, in the modern era, as Rolex has skewed away from utility towards full-blown luxury, the Crown has begun to experiment a bit more. Sure, we have crazy pave dials, ombre dials, and rainbow Daytonas. But, the quietly released Yacht-Master 42 with a “Falcon’s Eye” dial shows just how strong their dial-manufacturing capabilities are. Many jested Rolex stole a page out of Grand Seiko’s playbook, with nature-inspired palm tree-motif dials on the Datejust. But this “Falcon’s Eye” dial is much more apt example of how Rolex can transform natural elements into an astoundingly cool looking dial. So, for those that need something out of the box, the Yacht-Master 42 is capable of such thrills as well.

Rolex Yacht-Master 35 ref. 168622 with platinum dial

While discontinued, older 29mm, 31mm, and 35mm Yacht-Master watches are also available for purchase as well – and for less than the retail pricing of a current 37mm model in Oystersteel and platinum. This means you have five size options on the table. To explore references like the Daytona and Submariner in their discontinued smaller sizes would require a large-budget worthy of bidding against serious collectors at auction houses like Phillips. A particular Yacht-Master favourite of mine is the ref. 168622 with a platinum dial. Yes, you read that right, the entire dial is made of solid frosted platinum. While the case and bracelet may be steel, the bezel and dial are full-platinum – very stealthy precious metal thrills. I also cannot recall another Rolex dial that utilises a frosted finish. Quite neat.

My closing statement

So, with six size options that can be explored, and a wide aesthetic range, the Rolex Yacht-Master offers the most versatility within the pantheon of Rolex “Professional” models. Prove me wrong.

Let's take a look at one of the latest and most spoken about Rolex Yachtmaster watches, the 116655. This watch is a special watch for many reasons. Namely, this is a historical landmark for Rolex since it is the first Rolex watch to ever use a rubber strap. Most people wouldn't bat an eye at the idea of a Rolex with a rubber strap so why the fuss? This is not any typical rubber strap. Rolex has been raving about this new rubber Oysterflex bracelet which is not only very comfortable to wear, it is also hypoallergenic.

The research and development team at Rolex has engineered a bracelet that is as easy to wear as a rubber bracelet but also holds its shape like a metal bracelet. They do this by using nickel-and-titanium inserts inside the band. An Oysterlock safety clasp keeps the watch from opening and looks stunning in 18ct Everose gold. You'll also find a black matte Cerachrom dial which is a hardened ceramic material that is a tough and highly scratch resistant material that has anticorrosive properties and is impervious to discoloration from exposure to Ultra Violet rays. The dial on the Rolex Yacht-Master 116655 with its cyclops date magnifier could be passed as that of a Submariner if it weren't for all the Everose gold used. You can find this material used on the rims of the index hour markers, the Rolex logo, and luminous filled hands. You won't find rose gold on the dial of any watch in the Submariner series (yet?). The combination of black and Everose gold is a real eye-grabber giving this the look of a really luxurious watch.

What's running inside this stunning watch? The Yacht-Master 40mm runs off an automatic Rolex perpetual movement, the Rolex caliber 3135. This 31 jewel movement beats at 28,800 vph and has a power reserve of about 50 hours.

Rolex Yachtmaster II

At a glance, this watch is an impressive piece of eye-candy with a polished case and two-tone rose gold and stainless steel bracelet. The design used vibrant colors from the blue Cerachrom bezel to the rose gold pushers and patented Triplock crown. Unlike most bezels which don't operate as a component of the movement, the easy-to-use and bi-directional Ring Command bezel on the Yachtmaster II operates in conjunction with the regatta chronograph as an integral component of the movement. This bezel is the method in which you can synchronize the countdown timer to the start times of a race. Each time you press the button you can adjust the timer by one-minute increments for up to a 10-minute countdown timer. When you adjust the rotating bezel back to its default middle position, it resets the chronograph back to its main function.

This COSC certified Swiss chronometer is the self-winding caliber 4161 automatic movement beats at 28,800 vph and is completely manufactured by Rolex. This movement features the Rolex antimagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring. After receiving a COSC certified chronometer certification, the movement the goes through a thorough in-house chronometric testing once installed into a watch case. Once the watch achieves a precision of -2/+2 seconds per day in the case, it gets a Rolex Superlative Chronometer designation. Even with all these mechanical features, the 31 jewel caliber 4161 movement holds its power for 72 hours.

Rolex Yacht-Master II vs. Rolex Sky-Dweller Comparison

Although they are by far the two most complicated watches in Rolex’s current lineup, on the face of it, the Sky-Dweller and the Yacht-Master II wouldn’t seem to have that much in common. Certainly, as far as the visuals are concerned, there is a world of difference. One is elegantly understated, the other just about as in-your-face as anything in the portfolio. However, once you get away from the aesthetics, the pair of watches actually share a number of similarities. Below we examine each model, and explore what makes them both rather special additions to the Rolex lineup.

Rolex Complications

Rolex has built much of its unassailable reputation by producing watches that are stylish, elegant, robust, and most of all, mechanically simple. Aside from the Daytona’s chronograph complication, as far as Rolex’s main production models are concerned, a GMT function or the President’s double calendar is really as complicated as the brand has ever gotten.

Dig back far enough into the archives and you will find a moonphase model from the 1950s (now resurrected in the Cellini line) but apart from that, for the first century in business, Rolex has really been perfecting the art of the simple three-hand time teller, with perhaps a date display if you’re lucky.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II

That all changed in 2007, when Rolex launched the sequel to the original Yacht-Master, and brought us the inventively titled Yacht-Master II. Identical to its sibling in no way whatsoever, the Yacht-Master II (sometimes referred to as the Yacht-Master 2 or YMII) was as radical a departure from the usually conservative Rolex playbook as you could get.

At 44mm, it was easily the largest watch in the collection, and was a big, bold attention-grabber marketed at a particularly niche section of the buying public. Shouting its name in huge letters across the bezel, and given a mishmash of elements on its dial, there was no chance of it going unnoticed. It was released in two variants initially, the ref. 116689 in white gold was the slightly more underplayed (and expensive) of the pair, while the ref. 116688 in yellow gold with a bright blue Cerachrom bezel was the real grandstander.

Inside both, the Cal. 4160 was a heavily reworked version of the Daytona’s Cal. 4130, and it powered the industry’s first programmable flyback or fly-forward regatta timer with a mechanical memory. What would you possibly ever need one of those for? Well, the clue is very much in the name, with the watch built explicitly for the world’s competitive yacht-racing crowd.

Rolex has been involved in the impossibly glamorous sport of professional sailing for decades, sponsoring some of the highest profile events around the globe, including the Rolex Fastnet and the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. It was to help captains of the ships in these races overcome the timing challenges of regatta competitions that the Yacht-Master II’s very specific complication was invented.

Each contest begins with a countdown to the starting gun, usually between five and 10 minutes long, during which the boats must tack back and forth behind the start line. The watch’s timer allows the wearer to set that duration on the dial as a normal method but, crucially, also gives the ability to resynchronize it with the official clock if it is accidentally started too early or late. In addition, instead of a typical flyback, the Yacht-Master II resets itself forward or backwards to the nearest minute rather than to zero.

The complex operations require not only two pushers either side of the winding crown, but also the first generation of Rolex’s Ring Command Bezel, which links the outer bezel of the watch directly to the internal movement. The bezel on the Yacht-Master II serves as a form of analogue on/off switch, locking and unlocking the various features, to facilitate the setting process for the countdown timer.

Since the original launch of the Yacht-Master II collection, the range has expanded to include a two-tone Everose Rolesor edition and an all stainless steel piece, both fitted with blue Cerachom bezels. In 2013, the Yacht-Master II got an update to its movement in the form of the Cal. 4161. An evolution of the Cal. 4160 that contains 360 components and took Rolex over 35,000 hours to devise.

Although no one was in any doubt that the watch was an impressive technical achievement, the aesthetics split opinions. There was none of the subtlety that traditionalists have long valued with Rolex, with the face made up of an unusual set of features – a small seconds sub dial at the bottom and a horseshoe-shaped counter around the top, numbered 1 to 10 for the regatta countdown, along with an arrow-tipped additional hand.

However, as with many offerings from the brand, the Yacht-Master II’s looks have found their footing over time, and the watch has become more and more accepted. Today, although not worn by that many skippers (in the same way Rolex’s dive watches rarely see the ocean) the Yacht-Master II has certainly found an appreciative audience beyond its intended boat-racing market.

The Rolex Sky-Dweller 

Even though you would never guess from its appearance, the Sky-Dweller is an even more complex beast than the Yacht-Master II. Its graceful silhouette and fluted bezel land it firmly in dress watch territory, and at first glance it could be mistaken for a Datejust or Day-Date. However, look closer and you see the dial has far more information to tell us than either of those classic pieces, and it actually does what no other Rolex watch ever has.

As well as a date function at the standard three o’clock position, the rotating off-centered disc is a new take on a dual time zone display, and expertly hidden is the brand’s first ever annual calendar. To cram all that in on a watch with no additional buttons to ruin the symmetry of the case is little short of amazing, and involves an updated version of Rolex’s Ring Command Bezel. This time, instead of just allowing the functions to be turned on and off like on the Yacht-Master II, the Sky-Dweller’s three-position bezel selects each individual operation as you rotate it, and all settings and adjustments are done with just the winding crown.

First released in 2012, the Sky-Dweller was originally only available in all precious metal; either yellow gold, Everose gold, or white gold. The hefty price tags attached to each, coupled with the somewhat unorthodox looks, meant that the watch failed to catch on at the beginning. Three more versions followed in 2014, with a changeup of dial color and bracelet options, but they were still pricey, solid-gold affairs.

It was only in 2017 that the first two-tone and stainless steel models arrived (albeit with an 18k white gold bezel), with a corresponding drop in price, bringing the Sky-Dweller within reach of a wider audience and starting it on its journey towards its current highly desirable status. All iterations are driven by another massively complex movement, in this case the Cal. 9001. Made up of 380 parts, it is the most component-heavy caliber Rolex has made and powers not only the standard functions and the GMT, but also the annual calendar, a system that the brand calls SAROS.

Like all annual calendars, the Sky-Dweller’s date only needs correcting once a year, at the end of February. At all other times, the mechanism compensates for the different number of days in the month. And the way it presents the month display for the complication is also unique: above each of the 12 hour markers is a small aperture, used to represent the month of the year. The current one is filled in in a solid color – so a blocked out window above the six o’clock signifies June, over the seven is for July, etc. It is a superbly economical way of doing things, and allows for a far more uncluttered display than would otherwise be possible.

The GMT function is likewise a novel experience. The small inner disc does away with the need for an extra hand as on the GMT-Master or Explorer II. Instead, it is simply marked with a 24-hour scale and rotates to show the correct time at the top, which is indicated by a small triangle. All told, the Sky-Dweller adds up to one of the most complete and impressive luxury traveler’s watches presently on offer.

Yacht-Master II vs. Sky-Dweller

So we have two pretty extraordinary watches, each designed for a definite purpose, and containing technology unseen anywhere else in the brand’s collection. One is a born showman, the other quietly sophisticated, but both do their respective jobs extremely well.

Is there a case for calling one better than the other? Like all these things, is it completely subjective. Yes, the chances are that you will rarely (if ever) use the Yacht-Master II’s party piece for its intended purpose. However, the countdown timer can still be used for timing anything else (just as long it doesn’t take more than 10 minutes). Additionally, it is a quirky, imposing, supersized watch that is guaranteed to get you seen.

The Sky-Dweller, on the other hand, wins out in day-to-day usability, with the annual calendar one of the most valued complications a watch can have, and the GMT functionality perfect for jet-setters or frequent travelers. At 42mm, it is also slightly more compact than the Yacht-Master II, and can be worn with a wider selection of outfits. The model you choose will always come down to personal taste, but it is reassuring to know both come from just about the finest watchmaker on the planet, and have an engineering virtuosity that is second to none.

Swanky sailor: reviewing the rolex oyster perpetual yacht-master.

In this feature from the WatchTime archives, we take a close look at the modern version of Rolex ’s Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master , with black Cerachrom bezel and Oysterflex bracelet. Original photos are by Nik Schölzel.

A water-resistant Oyster case, large hour markers and bold hands are essential elements of Rolex’s Submariner , introduced in 1953 and made for use underwater. In contrast, Rolex’s Yacht-Master, launched in 1992, is a luxury liner – equally at home on board a yacht on the high seas or on land at a ritzy yacht club. But to enjoy this luxury you’ll need to pay almost $25,000 for the 40-mm Everose gold and Cerachrom ceramic version shown here. Stainless-steel versions of the Yacht-Master are priced about $13,000 less.

The Yacht-Master was the first watch in Rolex’s Professional Oyster Collection to come in three different case sizes: 29, 35 and 40 mm. The model we tested, launched last year, is offered in two sizes: 37 and 40 mm. We chose the larger version, which we measured at precisely 40.19 mm in diameter and 11.49 mm in height (excluding the magnifying “Cyclops” lens for the date).

The well-known Cyclops date lens was patented by Rolex in 1953 and introduced in 1954 on the Datejust. This magnifying device is made of sapphire, like the watch’s crystal, and has nonreflective coating on both sides. The jumping date advances exactly at midnight.

The watch is powered by a seasoned caliber, the Rolex 3135, used in the very first Yacht-Master in 1992. The 3135 debuted in 1988 in the Submariner. The blue Parachrom balance spring was added to the movement in 2005, five years after it was first introduced in the Cosmograph Daytona. Its paramagnetic alloy resists changes caused by temperature variations and magnetic fields.

The Parachrom balance spring is thinner than a human hair and up to 10 times more resistant to shocks than a conventional balance spring. Provided with an overcoil, it is attached to a large balance wheel with a variable moment of inertia. Fine adjustments are made using four gold Microstella regulating screws. The balance wheel is supported by a height-adjustable bridge. The entire construction ensures rate results that bring the Yacht-Master (as well as the other watches in the Oyster collection) to the rank of “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified.” These words on the Yacht-Master’s dial mean that the watch has endured 15 days and nights of testing by COSC in addition to a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratory. Acceptable rate results for a Superlative Chronometer allow deviations of less than +/-2 seconds per day, while COSC’s test permits average deviations between -4 and +6 seconds per day. In addition, Rolex’s tests are carried out under conditions that correspond more closely to real-life situations than COSC’s tests and are conducted on fully assembled watches, while COSC tests just the movements.

We, too, tested the finished watch – fully wound and after running for 24 hours – first in five positions on the timing machine and then with a two-week wearing test on the wrist (or simulated on a winding machine). In our tests, the Yacht-Master remained within the standards specified by Rolex for a Superlative Chronometer. On the wrist it showed virtually no deviations over the two-week period. On the timing machine it showed a gain of about 1 second per day with minimal variations among the positions.

The tests performed by Rolex include a water-resistance check. Unlike the Submariner, the Yacht-Master’s water resistance is “only” 100 meters. This means that the Yacht-Master is not designed to be a professional dive watch , which requires water resistance of at least 200 meters.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional bezel also keeps it from being a dive watch. The bezel on a dive watch usually rotates in only one direction so it won’t show a shorter dive time if it’s repositioned inadvertently. But the Yacht-Master’s bezel is impressive: it has 120 ratchets and shows graduations in 5-minute increments using both Arabic numerals and line markers. The first quarter has well-defined minutes markers. Polished, raised graduations on the ceramic inlay stand in relief against a sandblasted, matte black background. The bezel is made of Cerachrom, Rolex’s ceramic material. The Ceramic inlay is set in a deeply grooved ring made of Everose gold, Rolex’s rose-gold alloy. A grooved caseback seals the case hermetically and can only be opened using a special tool. Three dots on the screw-down crown indicate that this watch has been sealed with the Triplock sealing system, a triple water- resistance system developed by Rolex.

The screw-down crown sits securely inside the case between two crown guards. Releasing the crown allows it to spring away from the midsection, which makes it easy to use for manual winding, rapid date change and setting the hands.

The dial has a characteristic Rolex look. The applied markers and elongated triangle at 12 o’clock are filled with Rolex’s luminous substance, Chromalight, and are displayed on a matte black background. The hour hand has a “Mercedes” circle filled with Chromalight and the seconds hand has a luminous Chromalight dot. The stark contrast of black and white ensures excellent legibility during the day; at night the Chromalight emits a blue glow for easy reading in the dark.

This watch is the first Rolex with an Oysterflex bracelet. (We use the term “bracelet” rather than “strap” because the Oysterflex, unlike standard rubber straps, has metal on the inside.) Combining a rubber strap with a gold case is nothing new, but at Rolex, known for its conservative approach to design, it’s a major innovation. The patented bracelet has a core made of nickel-titanium alloy blades, which provide excellent flexibility and are coated with a black elastomer, a synthetic type of rubber. When the material is subjected to tension and pressure, it returns to its original shape quickly. It resists environmental changes and is long lasting, waterproof and hypoallergenic – a good alternative to a metal bracelet. The bracelet’s black color goes well with the ceramic bezel and with the Everose gold case, presenting a modern, two-tone look.

Inside the bracelet is a patented cushioning system that increases wearing comfort. The bracelet accommodates changes in wrist size. The single-sided Oysterlock folding clasp made of Everose gold offers additional flexibility; it allows for three length adjustments. Screws attach the clasp securely to the bracelet. A safety bar makes opening the clasp more difficult but prevents it from opening accidentally.

gold on rubber = cool if one can afford it. I still prefer my S/S Y-M with PT dial & bezel = an understated goes everywhere quite comfortable piece. By the way… hardly mentioned BUT the curved lugs on all Yacht-Master models make for a wonderfully contoured fit + way better than straight lugs on most Rolex’

May I request for an article or review regarding swiss made SELECTRON chronograph / computer watches made possibly during the 60s-70s?

That patent on the Cyclops would have expired over 40 years ago, meaning whatever it covered now can be freely-used by the public, I’m not sure it’s a bragging point (and, no, patents cannot be renewed).

It actually comes with three different sizes, so you just pick the pair that works best for your wrist.

Sizing is a bit of a problem, I bought mine 2nd hand but never worn. AD will have various sizes in combination to make it fit. So if i were to sell it on that person may have a heck of a time getting it to fit.

Love the watch but I was told I had to wait a year to purchase the 40mm size in Canada. So, off I went and purchased a watch from a different manufacturerer!

Any other year, the titanium yacht-master 42 would steal the show for rolex. this year, the brand has so many crazy releases that the ym flies under the radar. here's why it still matters..

A year ago, the very idea of a titanium Rolex was relegated to wild dreams. A prototype had been seen on the wrist of British competitive sailor Sir Ben Ainslie, but the widely circulated online photo had gotten so old that some of us began to wonder if the watch would ever see the light of day.

Now, in less than five months, we've gotten two watches from the Crown cased in RLX Titanium (a grade 5 titanium). The first was last year's 50mm Deep Sea Special , the mega dive watch that obliterated the water-resistance record. And now this week we have the Yacht-Master 42, which unlike the DSS is sized so that a normal human being could conceivably wear it. 

Here it is. The first practically sized titanium Rolex, the new Yacht-Master 42. 

It's a big deal. But when seen next to Daytonas with display casebacks, Day-Dates with emojis, a solid-gold GMT-Master II, and an entirely new line of dress watches, a titanium Yacht-Master barely moves the needle of surprise and excitement. What a wild 48 hours this has been for the House of Wilsdorf.

In some ways, it feels like the appropriate response to not be that excited. After all, at this point every other watchmaker under the sun has made a titanium watch, from affordable Citizens in multiple colors of bezels and dials to Jean-Claude Biver's $500,000 minute repeater tourbillon announced Sunday.

And yet, as soon as the new titanium Yacht-Master ref. 226627 started to be passed around the room of Hodinkee editors during this week's Watches & Wonders trade show, the general reaction was just to laugh with surprise. This 42mm watch, which looks so sturdy, feels so unbelievably light. I mean, that's titanium for you. But still. You can't quite believe this watch is real, on a number of different levels. 

For any of us who've ever tried on a steel Submariner (a.k.a. anyone with a passing interest in Rolex), it's kind of comical to find out how much your brain is preconditioned to see a 42mm steel Oyster case, round indices, and Mercedes hands and think about the luxurious heft that awaits you.

At around 100 grams, according to Rolex, the titanium Yacht-Master is so light it breaks your brain.

For a moment, let's compare the new YM to last year's titanium Pelagos from Rolex's sister brand Tudor. Rolex's choice to put the watch on a bracelet instead of a sportier Oysterflex makes the comparison obvious. I've now spent time with both pieces, and I prefer the Yacht-Master. 

The YM, like the Pelagos, is distinctly a tool watch – something that would have been hard to say about Yacht-Masters in the past. But the finishing a world apart, which is saying something for such an understated metal as titanium.

Rolex's proprietary grade 5 "RLX Titanium" (stronger than the grade 2 of the Pelagos) has the curious property of being equally able to be brushed satin or polished, which means it has the nice sharp and shiny chamfers that you'd like to see contrasted against the dark grey and relatively matte metal. That combination also works well with the more matte and textured dial – and with the contrast of the raised black numerals against a matte ceramic bezel insert, which is is the main giveaway that this is still squarely a Yacht-Master.

My main critique (which I share into the void, knowing that Rolex designers will do whatever they think best) is that I wish they'd  stuck to the no-date design of Ainsilie's prototype. In the practical application of most sailing races, there's really no use for a date. If you're blue-water sailing and circumnavigating the globe, maybe its useful, though just like dive watches the practical application gives way to the reality of technology. So why not refine the design further and leave the date off altogether? And while we're at it, a better quick-adjustment option would be great.

The price is somewhat immaterial – CHF 13,400 – since the average collector won't be able to get it at retail anytime soon. But the new Yacht-Master 42 is more than a solid release. It's a more than a titanium proof of concept. It's a wearable piece that portends at least the possibility of future experiments with this fascinating material.

Almost Obscure: The Rolex Yacht-Master II 116689

Rolex does not simply release watches on a whim. New models are rare, and updates to existing models are often minor, sometimes not even warranting an announcement. Regardless of timing or subtlety, everything The Crown does is met with scrutiny and drama. So, too, it was when the Yacht-Master II was released in 2007. The watch was met with mixed reactions: With an obscure complication that no one really asked for and the largest case in Rolex’s catalog, some thought it sullied the robust elegance of its forebear. Others rightfully praised its technical innovations. Fast forward more than a decade and the model seems to have won out: the Rolex Yacht-Master II 116689 seen here (and its sister references) remains in the Rolex catalog and is a favorite among those seeking a Rolex with a bit more panache and functionality than the standard Submariner.

When the original Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992, it was Rolex’s first entirely new model since the Sea-Dweller in 1967. The watch was an immediate hit with the seagoing elite, and has remained incredibly popular, with a variety of colorways and sizes released to satisfy demand.  Then, in 2007, the Yacht-Master II was released. Rolex spent over 35,000 hours designing the movement for the watch, which was designed to aid skippers in tracking the starting sequence of a regatta, including a novel integrated bezel and programmable countdown timer with memory function. Two models were part of the original release: the 116688 in solid 18kt gold with a blue ceramic bezel and the 116689 in 18kt white gold with an embossed platinum bezel.  

Design Details

At 44mm wide and 14mm thick, the Yacht-Master II features the largest production case Rolex offers. Despite its size, the watch is good to just 100m of water resistance—certainly sufficient for most aquatic adventures, but a subtle hint that Yacht-Master II is aimed at those who plan to remain aboard. The solid 18k white gold case and bracelet of the 116689 remain classic Rolex: polished throughout, with gentle curves, it gives way to the dual-finished Oyster bracelet, which features an Oysterlock clasp and Easylink 5mm extension for fine-tuned sizing. The patented Triplock crown and its guards maintain the aesthetic, with ringed chronograph pushers at its flanks. A white gold bezel—dubbed the Ring Command bezel for its added functionality—features a frosted platinum insert with embossed, polished numerals and model name. Protecting the dial is a sapphire crystal. 

Despite the watch’s functionality, Rolex has kept things extremely legible with a clean white dial. Square hour markers are applied and filled with the brand’s proprietary Chromalight lume. At 9 o’clock, the Crown logo is accompanied by the traditional Rolex dial text. At 6 o’clock, a running seconds subdial features a radial finished ring. The hands are all blued, with the hour and minute featuring lume; the minute hand has a cutout to allow for better timing legibility. In a large arc bounded by bright blue, the 10-minute regatta scale lines up perfectly with both the applied markers and the bezel. The countdown time is displayed by a bright red chronograph sweep hand and a lumed triangle minute hand.

To set the countdown timer, turn the Ring Command bezel 90 degrees counterclockwise, press the 4 o’clock pusher, and use the crown to set the desired interval (the triangle hand will snap back to 0 if pushed past 10). After rotating the bezel back, the watch’s pushers operate similarly to a normal chronograph. But Rolex has added two unique functions. When the timer is set, the initial countdown time is memorized: if the countdown is 7 minutes and needs to be restarted, stopping and resetting the timer will return it to 7 minutes. Equally impressive, the watch can be resynchronized to the official race countdown if necessary: pressing the reset pusher without stopping the timer will jump the timing hand to the nearest minute. 

Inner Workings

Powering the Rolex Yacht-Master II is the automatic Rolex 4161 caliber, based on the 4130 chronograph movement (seen in the Daytona). Comprising over 360 components, including 44 jewels, the movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a robust 72 hours of power (a number of the constituent parts are so small, they require specialized micromanufacturing mastered in-house by Rolex). The watch is further equipped with Rolex’s Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock system, together delivering exceptional antimagnetism and shock resistance. As with all modern Rolex movements, the 4161 is certified to their Superlative Chronometer standards, accurate to -2/+2 seconds per day. 

Instead of the traditional chronograph functions of its base movement, the 4161 has been retooled to allow for use as a countdown timer. In conjunction with a vertical clutch, a column wheel extends through the main plate, allowing for the programmable countdown. Additional reworking has added instantaneous re-synchronization functionality and countdown memory; and as discussed above, the bezel is coupled to the movement to allow its use as a locking mechanism for the timer (though considering the bezel part of the movement might be a stretch). All of these decidedly niche features make for one of the most complicated Rolex calibers ever made. 

Versus the Competition

Watches and regattas have been linked for quite some time, and indeed many brands sponsor teams, races, or entire series. Omega and TAG Heuer have both released limited edition America’s Cup watches featuring countdown mechanisms. Panerai makes the Luminor 1950 Regatta Chrono Flyback and Ulysse Nardin has its Marine Regatta model. Of course, sometimes only a Rolex will do, in which case one can opt for the timing function of the Daytona, the Ring Command bezel of the Sky-Dweller, or the nouveau riche appeal of the original Yacht-Master. 

Personality

While the original Yacht-Master appealed to the owners of superyachts by providing a higher-end alternative to the Submariner, the Rolex Yacht-Master II 116689 builds on that appeal with the added bona fides of regatta timing functionalities. In the white gold execution, it’s perhaps best suited to the sailing enthusiast with who enjoys the occasional regatta and may even partake in one from time to time, but also likes a splash of luxury on the wrist and isn’t afraid to let others know.  

Final Thoughts

Be it as it may an undeniable piece of luxury sailing kit, the Yacht-Master II does what only a few Rolexes do: provides both the exceptional quality the brand is known for and unique functionality. For that alone, the model is well worth a look.

With their new 88  footer from the Double Deck range, Sunreef are unveiling an ultra-comfortable cruising catamaran built for an experienced boating family, and are confirming their ability to complete fully customized projects on the same timescale as production boats.

Description.

The start of the ambitious Sunreef 88 Double Deck project was officially communicated during Sunreef Yachts’ press conference at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016. After eight months of intensive work, the shipyard proudly announced the launch of this catamaran with a zealous, sporty look.

An experienced yachtsman switching from a massive motor yacht , the owner decided to commission the Sunreef 88 Double Deck to pursue a more stable navigation style with greater living space. Indeed, a challenging project for the shipyard’s engineering and design teams.

Nonetheless, this journey was destined to keep the promise of delivering a state-of-the art fully customized sailing catamaran from the start. To achieve the goal of building a seaworthy and dynamic catamaran, Sunreef Yachts’ team of naval architects conceived a completely new yacht design which seemed far sportier than the rest.

Same as all yachts within her range, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck too features a mezzanine level inside the saloon and a spacious master stateroom with a panoramic view in the bow part of the main deck. However, her superstructure was granted a more aerodynamic aspect. As a result, the 88-footer emphasis equally on both performance and luxury, offering over 300m² of living space and an outstanding sailing experience.

Despite this, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck remains a family-friendly yacht offering the best of comfort and safety. The innovative composite superstructure of the sailing yacht conceals a smart and functional layout with luxurious accommodations for eight guests and up to five crew members.

Upon the owners’ request, the interior decor of the Sunreef 88 Double Deck features exclusive natural materials: Chambord oak, linen, leather, natural stone, and quartz tiles – all contribute to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the sailing yacht . The feeling of warmth was also achieved through applying numerous orange accents to the interiors – an important color for the owner’s family who consider it to be a symbol of energy.

New Sunreef 92 Double Deck Sailing Catamaran

From the same people who brought you the original Sunreef Yacht, comes the new Sunreef 92 Double Deck , with a new design which not only streamlines the deck house, but tops it with a giant 40 m 2 fly bridge.

This was inspired by similar designs found on other super yacht designs. In collaboration with K-Epsilon and Rivoyre Ingenierie , The Sunreef Naval Architecture Bureau has intensely studied performance and sea capabilities using state of the art CFD, computational flow dynamics to create the ultimate in catamaran luxury.

Using integrated stepped hull chins, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck catamaran increases interior space, without compromising performance. Now this yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests, in up to 5 double luxury suites, as well as a crew of four.

Sunreef’s 92 Double Deck also features a canoe style boom and carbon mast, one of this manufacturer’s specialties. How are they able to accomplish such feats? They added a new mezzanine floor, which includes a coffee table and lounge, located on the port side of the main deck dining area, freeing up more space below for larger cabins and storage space, or even more suites if you prefer.

Because of this innovative design modification, now the owner’s suite occupies two floors of the entire front area of this yacht, with a private luxury office, gym and leisure area on the upper level, with the bathroom, wardrobe and storage area below deck. Each cabin has an extended size, three way access to their King sized beds, with spectacular panoramic sea views. Not only this, but each luxury suite comes with its own separate bath and shower area, large closets, storage lockers, as well as their own air conditioning and a comprehensive entertainment system.

With a LOA of 27 meters, an 11.2m beam, and a 1.6m draft, this super yacht has a 80 ton displacement. It will also be powered by two 405HP 1200 L/3170 Gal engines, and will be able to cruise at speeds up to 15 knots. The 70m 2 cockpit will also include a large dining area, sunbathing mattresses, and diving equipment. Its spacious fly bridge is fitted with a jacuzzi, two wet bars, barbecue, ice makers and even a pair of jet skis. It will also include a tender, hidden in a specially built locker under the main sun pad of the cockpit.

Even though this is only the second of such models, it isn’t hard to see why the Sunreef 92 Double Deck sailing catamaran is on it’s way to be one of the most sought after luxury yachts. With it’s innovative design, state of the art electronics, and focus on luxury, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck is top of the line, and a must for people who may still think they have it all. A seafaring adventure on island routes double-decker catamaran cruise.

Embark on a luxury catamaran cruise adventure out of Ocho Rios, Jamaica that takes adventure to new heights.

Standing on the dock, I pause a moment to let my gaze travel slowly upwards at the gleaming catamaran floating before me. Rocking gently in the calm Caribbean Sea, the beautiful double-decker  Calipsoul  seems familiar yet exciting and new to me all at the same time. I had chosen Island Routes Catamaran Dunn’s River Cruise the last time I was in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It had been the perfect combination of relaxation and excitement that I had been looking for. We had also done the romantic Lovers Rock evening cruise, literally sailing into the sunset together. Making the cruise reservation Both times it had turned out exactly as promised and this time around when I knew I was heading back to Jamaica, I reached out to the wonderfully helpful Island Routes team yet again. I spoke with them about how much I had enjoyed the last catamaran excursion I did with them and shared that this time I would be coming with a group of friends and family of all ages. I had enjoyed the snorkeling aspect of the Dunn’s River cruise so much but it had been fairly short and some of my group said they really wanted to let loose and relax.

Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise They suggested the Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise. They explained that it was like The Dunn’s River cruise minus the climbing, which my mom was happy to hear about, and a lot of time spent exploring the underwater world. Then they told me how great my timing was as they now have a brand new double-decker catamaran! To be honest, I couldn’t quite picture it so I didn’t know what to expect. Standing here, about to step onto the Calipsoul , I am filled with delight as the kids all leap aboard. We aren’t the only family on board that day and as my group is fairly large, coming over on the shuttle service from the Beaches all-inclusive family resort, I had been worried about feeling crowded. Yet, what we discover is the perfect blend of being able to find ample areas for ourselves while also having the opportunity to meet other people as equally excited as we are.

Snorkeling lesson Once in the water, we are directed by the crew, who have joined us, where to swim and, along the way, they make sure to point out coral formations and beautiful fish ensuring we have an amazingly immersive experience (pun intended). I explore for ages and I am very excited as I brought my waterproof camera with me this time and aim to meet my self-imposed challenge of taking an underwater selfie with tropical fish. Although unsuccessful because they move pretty quickly, I still have a blast. Suddenly, someone is tapping me on my shoulder and I pop my head up to see one of the crew members guiding me back to the boat. Making my way back I realize that, as strong a swimmer as I am, I’m pretty happy to have the life vest on as it allows me to keep looking underwater while I make my way back without having to put in too much effort in keeping myself headed in the right direction so all my focus is on the magical world below me. Trampoline for the kids, hammocks for the adults We climb aboard and the teenagers head to the trampoline area (I was told that’s what it’s called). For people who may not normally hang out on a boat, this area serves an engineering purpose but is also a pretty cool place to just hang out on as it’s like a flat stretched-out hammock where you can just lay out and chill. I divest myself of the fins, mask, and vest and realize I’m pretty hungry! Lunch on the ocean Luckily, the food comes out and everyone piles up their plates with tropical fruit, delicious wraps and chips, and salsa, and we head for a sunny spot on the upper deck of the catamaran. We start chatting with other people and decide it’s just about the right time for the rum version of that delicious fruit punch (after all we’re in Jamaica, how can we pass up the delicious rum when no one is driving or diving). My husband opts for a cold Red Stripe instead and leans back to work on his tan. Learning Jamaican dance moves We hear music and a lot of laughter below and realize the trampoline is empty. I decide to leave my husband happily tanning and I follow the music only to discover a full-blown dance class, as the crew is teaching everyone the latest Jamaican dancehall dance moves. Although I feel a little self-conscious when I join in, that quickly fades away as everyone tries their best to match the expertise of the crew. Over on the right, two little girls have their own crew member showing them what to do and they catch on quickly, delighted grins lighting up their faces. I manage to muddle through and I’m pretty sure my sister is going to show these videos to everyone once we get back home for an evening full of a similar level of laughter at my expense. In that moment though, I don’t care. I feel the salt from the sea drying on my skin, my hair is a tousled mess and I’m dancing with my children in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. This, I think, is what happiness is.

First Sunreef 88 double deck catamaran launched

The first hull in the Sunreef 88 range of double deck sailing catamarans has been launched in Gdansk for a European owner, the Polish yard has announced.

This fully personalised multihull superyacht measures 26.82 metres LOA and was styled inside and out by the in-house team at  Sunreef Yachts .

In a statement, the Polish yard added that the design of the Sunreef 88 is “a great display of the shipyard’s non-conformist attitude and a genuine example of an avant-garde sailing catamaran concept”.

Captain Ian Sellers added: "She is a beautifully crafted, fully customised transoceanic catamaran, with superb quality and finish."

The design brief was focussed on three key themes: luxury, performance and privacy. To this end, the Sunreef 88 features more than 300 square metres of living space — an impressive figure for a yacht of this size, proving that bigger isn't always better .

This two-deck sailing yacht will feature an extensive flybridge with a central helm station and plenty of al fresco dining and relaxation spaces. Back aft, the cockpit features a central dining table with seating space for ten guests as well as a second sunbed, making good use of the Sunreef 88's 11.2 metre beam.

The in-house design includes sporty and dynamic exterior lines, as well as a fully customised interior layout. Key features include a mezzanine level in the saloon and a main-deck owner's cabin , which boasts superb views out to sea through panoramic windows.

Auxiliary power comes from a pair of 425hp engines drawing on a total fuel capacity of 8,000 litres, while her total sailplan is in excess of 345 square metres.

Sunreef added that the designers drew inspiration for this single-masted sailing yacht from the 35 metre flagship yacht Che , which was launched in 2010. The Sunreef 88 is the sixth superyacht from the Polish yard, which has also created the Sunreef 102 yacht Ipharra .
