Star Gaze Hawaii

Big Island Stargazing

Stargazing tours.

star-gaze-tour

Not your Usual Star Party

This is not your usual Star Party where you only look at the top 10 easy and bright deep space objects. We select a curated list of visually stunning space objects. You’ll see a stimulating variety of obscure and well known space curiosities designed to open your mind to the mystery and romance of astronomy.

Our equipment is beyond question, well maintained and performing at the optimum, limited only by atmospheric conditions. We ask you to focus the image for your personal eyesight. Unlike other stargazing experiences where only one eyepiece is used all night, we use a variety of high quality eyepiece optics to reveal delicate details and obscure overlooked aspects.

Novices and experienced stargazers will enjoy the high quality views, carefully selected list of objects and the star lore narrative on the history of Astronomy told by an experienced Astronomer.

Seaside Stargazing

All our stargazing tours are done on coastline hotel properties in warm weather near all the amenities you enjoy. Join us at any of the following locations based on the spot or the day of the week that works best for you.

Notes on Standing

Our activity requires participants to stand for the entire hour, and we do not provide chairs. If you or others in your party need to sit during the hour, please bring a beach chair with you. Stargazers must stand in queues to look through our telescopes. We may have one to three telescopes depending on the number of reservations.

AstroPhotography Session

Vaonis Stellina Robotic camera

Star Gaze Hawaii offers 2-hour astrophotography sessions featuring a Vaonis Stellina Robotic camera. The session’s goal is hands-on, acquiring pictures of many deep space objects.

Deep space objects are dim and require long exposures. We can most likely obtain just a handful of objects in two hours.

The Stellina is an 80 ED F/5 400mm refractor with a Sony CMOS sensor. Artificial Intelligence software will post-process the images in real-time as the customer watches on an iPad.

The client will control the telescope and camera exposures.  The images obtained will be sent to the customer’s email, airdropped, or SMS to their cellphone.

Our Fee for an astrophotography session is $400.00 + 4.712% Tax = $418.85 (Credit Card or cash). Please get in touch with me if you want to book this, and I will send you a link to book and pay for it online.

Scheduling and Location

The Moon will prevent astrophotography of deep space objects – schedule for dates with minimal moonlight. We do these sessions at the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort.

Private Stargazing Session

private-stargazing

We love being part of your small group event. We offer Private Stargazing Sessions at the amazingly dark (except for Star light and Moon light) Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, Kohala Garden Parking Lot. Unsurpassed Stargazing with pristine skies and wide-open vistas.

Private Sessions lasting from 1 to 2 hours for families or small groups.

One Hour Session

Guided tour of the sky with private access to the telescope for groups of up to 6 10 people.

Equipment Rental

Frequently asked questions, why stargaze at sea level when all the observatories are at high altitude.

The Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii has unique geographic topology that allows world class stargazing–sub-arc-second viewing–from Sea Level.  1 arc-second is 1/3,600 of one degree of angle.  In most places on this planet, due to turbulence in the air, stars will be 2-3 arc-seconds in diameter.  At Star Gaze Hawaii’s selected sites, we can attain ½ arc-second star images routinely, limited only by weather.

Additionally, high Altitude reduces oxygen levels in the air that your eyes need. Your eyes require oxygen to metabolize rhodopsin in order to see anything. Dim space objects require maximum oxygen to be realized at all. Mauna Kea Observatories (at 40% oxygen levels) are remote controlled telescopes where the astronomers are at low altitude.  Nobody views directly through any of the telescopes at the summit. Astronomers using the telescopes can be anywhere in the world as they operate over the internet.  If an Astronomer comes to Hawaii at all, they will be in a warm, low altitude environment while using the telescope.

Why should you go and freeze and suffer high altitude effects when no professional astronomer does that anymore? Instead, wear your aloha shirt and shorts (or Muumuu) in warm weather, close to hotel amenities at 100% oxygen levels and world-class arc-second viewing.

How does Star Gaze Hawaii differ from the Mauna Kea tours?

Star Gaze Hawaii concentrates on observing the sky. We look at interesting and many obscure objects not on any top 10 lists in Astronomy. We seek to stimulate the mind as well as the eyes of the participant. The principal astronomer has been doing this since 1962 and he knows a lot of history of Astronomy as well as the physics of the objects viewed. He keeps current with the news in Astronomy and has a unique ability to explain physics in plain language. Astronomy brought down to Earth. We use visual aids such as Green Laser Pointers and Original photographs taken of the objects viewed in the telescope.

What will happen if it is cloudy at sea level?

We do not control the weather.  Even professional astronomers have that same problem.  We call it “Astronomy in the Trenches”.  We bring the telescope and our expertise and deal with Mother Nature on her terms.  If the weather is a lost cause by 5 PM, we will cancel the session.  If there is hope or if it is clear at 7 PM, we will proceed and deal with clouds as they will do whatever they will.  We offer extensive historical accounts of Astronomy in the trenches when that happens.  We demo our equipment and make equipment reviews and recommendations.  In 1991, the Total Solar eclipse in Hawaii was encumbered by cloudy weather.  The astronomers and general public that made the investment to come to Hawaii were frustrated by the cloudy weather.  But, some people got partial data and photographs through breaks in the clouds.  This is Astronomy in the trenches.

The Kohala Coast has unique weather patterns that no weather forecast covers. It can be cloudy at 6 PM and clear up completely by 8 PM. We have been doing this since 1992 and we can predict the weather fairly well. Due to the high mountains to the East and South East, we get a Venturi effect from the winds funneling through the mountain valleys. If the trade winds are out of the North East, we can depend on clear weather by 8 PM. If it comes out of the East or South East, then we have a wind shadow effect and clouds may linger a bit longer, beyond our time frame for stargazing, but it will eventually clear. If we have Westerly winds, the clouds will pile up against the mountains and we can have clear skies overhead. If it comes out of the South, bad weather can persist all night.

How do weather cancellations work?

Hard cut off at 5 pm for reservations. we will send out email and (optional) text messages to confirm or cancel stargazing just after 5 pm. we are based over an hour away from the stargazing venues and with travel and setup times, we are unable to respond to changes in weather after 5 pm..

If the weather is poor at 5 PM we will cancel stargazing and send out email and (optional) text messages.

If it turns bad after 5 PM we will inform you around 7 PM of a cancellation in the same manner.

Check your email before you travel to the stargazing location. During Hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, having any storm in the vicinity can make weather highly unpredictable and rapidly subject to change.

Is VOG (Volcanic haze) a problem for stargazing?

In general, no. VOG indicates calm steady air free of turbulence. Strong winds and clear air go together and result in blurry views from moving turbulent air. With VOG, Planetary views are greatly improved as they will be sharp and finer details can be viewed. Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and the Moon are very bright. In our telescopes, they are so bright that your eye will be saturated and see no color, just white. The dimming due to the VOG can improve the colors and finely detailed views of these bright objects. Galaxies will be impacted negatively by dimming. But, Galaxies are commonly called “Dim Fuzzies”, best photographed rather than viewed by eye. Galaxies are always hazy and nebulous in small telescopes. Edwin Hubble required the 100” Mount Wilson telescope to be able to see individual stars in the Andromeda Galaxy a mere 2.54 million light years away. Galaxies offer intellectual stimulation of actually seeing ancient photons from millions of years ago as dim fuzzy patches. To see spiral arms, photography is the best method.

Can we see a Black Hole?

Visual light telescopes such as the ones that we use cannot “see” a Black Hole.  By definition, Black Holes emit no visual light.  As matter falls into a Black Hole, it can form an accretion disk that emits infrared and x-ray radiation.  The Infrared is from friction and compression of material falling into the strong gravity field.  The X-Ray is from ionized plasma that is accelerated to the speed of light as it falls into the event horizon around a Black Hole.  Visible light will be obscured by the accretion disk in all directions.  What can be seen in visual light are an artifact of a Black Hole: the jets of ejected matter from the poles of the spinning accretion disk.   We have a different name for those: Quasars.  Quasars are the incandescent glow from matter that is ejected out along the poles as jets of high speed material.  It is not a view of the actual Black Hole.  Unfortunately, most of these are very dim and billions of light years away.  There are no active Black Holes nearby with jets of ejected material.

Can we see Saturn’s Rings?

Yes, even a 60mm (2.4”) telescope can do that. We use 11” or 280mm telescopes and we normally magnify Saturn 200x. We can get up to 550x but that would cut off the Moons orbiting Saturn. We get fabulous views of Saturn’s rings, Moons and delicate banding in the atmosphere.

Show us the Milky Way.

All of the stars you can see in the sky at night are part of the Milky Way galaxy that we occupy. During the summer months, Sagittarius and Scorpius are high in the sky and the core of our galaxy is in that area. The Milky Way is the bright band of hazy light running through that area. In the winter, we are looking out towards the rim of the Milky Way and the hazy band is much dimmer running through Cassiopeia and Perseus.

Why are the pictures from NASA and in Magazines so vivid and the telescope views so dim and hazy?

The Human eye is very different than a camera. Cameras can store light over time and build up an image from multiple exposures. Essentially, Photoshop and image manipulation software is used to highly enhance the images through adding together many dim hazy exposures. The human eye has to work with the light it can sense through the telescope and what we show is the truth about the sky. Only a camera can get those magazine views of deep space objects. Planets are actually subdued in color and details are fleeting and hard to see. The atmosphere blurs out fine details except for short periods of time when it is stable. We extract this fine detail in images via video methods that average together many frames of video and build up the details from averaged data. Very often, we like to use 2,000 video frames to produce a decent image of Jupiter, Mars or Saturn. The human eye cannot do this type of processing. The Human Eye is very insensitive to red light. Hydrogen, the most abundant element in the Universe emits a deep red color in nebulae. Most people see that as blue or green since the rods in our eyes are most sensitive to dim light and they are monochrome. The Cones in our eyes need lots of light to see the red.

Have Star Gaze Hawaii staff used the telescopes on Mauna Kea?

Yes, we have been to the mountain many times, but to use the telescopes, you do not go up there. 95% of the time, there is no astronomers on the mountain. Only telescope operators who live at the 9,000 foot Hale Pohaku dorms actually go up to the summit at night. The astronomer goes to Waimea or Hilo where the main control panel is located. All of the telescopes are remote controlled robots. The staff at the summit are there to fix things that break or jam. The folks calling the shots are at low altitude and warm. The summit is at 40% oxygen levels and people need to acclimatize to that to work there. There is no good reason for astronomers to do that. Remote operations can be done from anywhere in the world over the internet. Star Gaze Hawaii has participated in observing sessions for the Keck Telescopes. Some of our staff work part time for us and full time for the Keck Observatory.

Will the views through the 11-inch telescope be similar to the pictures on this website?

The short answer is no. Telescopic views of astronomical objects are dim and faded to the human eye. The vast distances (thousands to millions of light-years) to the objects dim the view due to the inverse square law of light – twice the distance, one-fourth the brightness. Our eyes evolved to adapt to bright sunlit vistas on Earth. Space is a new frontier where we need to develop tools to extend our vision into an alien Universe. Some people are disappointed with the telescopic view of deep space objects. Others expand their view of the vastness of space and our situation among the stars. Star Gaze Hawaii gives one a first-hand experience sensing the actual photons from a deep space object. Then we show you our processed images which reveal it further to your minds’ eye.

An analogy in paleontology is the discovery of a fossil bone millions of years old, which we interpret into a dinosaur. Telescopes look far into the past at light, which left stars, Nebulae, and Galaxies thousands to millions of years ago. Per my paleontology analogy, I show you a bone in the telescope and try to reveal the entire dinosaur.

I show pictures of the actual object as it would be up close. Science aware people will perceive the physics of the object by its appearance. Star Gaze Hawaii will explain in plain language what is going on in an image. Looking through a telescope with the human eye will not be comparable to a long exposure image. Astronomers use instruments such as spectrometers, CCD Cameras, multi-spectral sensors, and filters to seek out what processes are present. Knowing this data, I photograph and process my images to be a good representation of an object.

Time exposures with a camera accumulate the colors for beautiful images. If we could be closer to the objects, those colors would be visible. The vivid colors in Nebulae originate from ionized gasses excited by ultraviolet light from stars. Many of my images are 1-hour or longer exposures. Amateur astronomers learn to use averted vision to see dim details directly, with little or no color. Colors depend on each individuals’ threshold of color, which is dependent on genetics and eye health. Still, colors in Nebulae are very subjective at these distances.

Observatory in Big Island

Are you interested in astronomy? Many people love to see stars, galaxies, and the beautiful world above the sky, but they weren't getting any opportunity to observe carefully. But, Hawaii gives you this most significant chance of stargazing and feel above the world with its Big Island observatory tour. The Maunkea Observations has recently allowed local residents of Hawaii to come and observe everything being at the top of the highest mountain of Hawaii. It’s a treat for astronomy lovers because they can see the culture closely with telescopes. But going for, such a hilarious adventure need a lot of knowledge. This post has some things that you must know before setting off.

Things to know for Big Island observatory tour

You can drive anytime to the summit in your car if the weather is clear. Also, your vehicle must be appropriate for this journey. Some things that you should follow during Big Island observatory tour are:

1. Stop at the visitor station

Though you want to reach there as soon as possible but stop at the visitor's station for 30minutes. This is for acclimatizing the changing altitude. The summit is about 4250 m above, which can cause health risks like breathing problem and much more. It can be avoided with stops.

2. You should have to come back after sunset

At the summit, people taking telescopes with them are returned to home after sunset. So, if you are visiting the mountain, come back early.

3. Dress warm and comfortably

You may think that it's a natural temperature, but once after the sunset, the temperature goes down. For protecting yourself in this extreme weather bring your warm clothes and a lot of snacks.

4. Take care of weather

Most of the time, the road towards the summit is closed, and visitors are sent back because of bad weather. If you are going for this tour, try to check the weather report first for a better journey.

These are some facts that you must know during Big Island observatory tour. If you want us to help you on this tour, contact us, we are ready to help you.

Stargazing Tours & Mauna Kea

From the slopes of Mauna Kea to the summit, there are incredible sites for viewing the night sky that is sure to leave you in awe. Hawaii Activities has a selection of Hawaii’s best stargazing tours on the Big Island. Find great deals and discounts on the best Hawaii stargazing experiences departing from Kona, Waikoloa, and Hilo. Book early as they sell out quickly!

Where can you stargaze in Hawaii?

Mauna Kea is a premier location to view the stars. The high altitude, the geographic location, and the lack of light pollution create perfect conditions for astronomical observation. There are several different types of stargazing tours in Hawaii, and all the options provide excellent opportunities to observe the Milky Way, planets, galaxies, nebula, and the moon.

The most popular tours are operated by Hawaii Forest & Trail , Mauna Kea Summit Adventures , and Nature SchoolMauna Kea Tour by Hawaiian eyes tour . They are the only tours licensed to take guests to watch the sunset at the summit of Mauna Kea and do stargazing at the Mauna Kea Visitor Center. We recommend making reservations at least 2-3 weeks in advance since they sell out quickly.

There are other fantastic stargazing tour options that take place on the slopes of Mauna Kea or Mauna Loa mountains, or at remote areas along Saddle Rd. They all provide excellent conditions for observing stars, planets, and galaxies.

What are the advantages of doing a stargazing tour on the slopes of Mauna Kea compared to at the Mauna Kea Visitor Center?

Here are some advantages of stargazing from the slopes of Mauna Kea compared to the visitor center near the summit:

• Family Friendly - Due to lower altitude, kids younger than 16 years old can join the tour.

• More Affordable & Easier to Find Last Minute Availability.

• Premier Location - Secluded spots on the slopes of Mauna Kea.

• Small Group Tours - Skip the crowds of Mauna Kea Visitor Center.

• Kapohokine Mauna Kea Stellar Explorer combines both daytime solar viewing and nighttime astronomical observing. It is also the most family friendly stargazing tour in regards to age restrictions.

• Epic Tours Mauna Kea Stargazing Experience + Free Photos specializes in night photography and the guides are also astro-photographer experts. You can learn how to take memorable pictures of the Milky Way.

Do you have any tours that combine Volcano Sightseeing and Stargazing on the same day?

Kilauea Volcano Private Tour, Black Sand Beach, Petroglyphs & Stargazing by Big Island Backroads Adventure and Wasabi Tours Twilight Volcano & Stargazing Tour are two great options that will take you to explore Volcanoes National Park top attractions and the recent 2018 eruptions sights. At the end of the tour, they stop along Saddle Road for a 20 - 30 minute stargazing experience with telescopes.

When is the best time to go on a stargazing tour?

Stargazing is great year-round in Hawaii, although the weather can be unpredictable. For the most superb conditions, try and book your tour for a New Moon night (moonless night). Try using a lunar calendar to select your tour date and book as early in advance as possible to get the best tour.

Can we go into the observatories at the Mauna Kea summit?

The Mauna Kea observatories are used exclusively for Astro scientific research, especially at night, and are rarely open to the general public. However, if you choose to go on one of the summit sunset or sunrise tours, you’ll have some free time to walk around and see the massive observatories from the outside. Just after the sunset you can also watch the domes of the observatories open and rotate as the astronomers inside are setting the telescopes for their research.

Latest reviews of Stargazing Tours & Mauna Kea

Henry is a wonderful tour guide. He told us so many interesting things about Big Island culture, history, plants, geology, stars. He was great with the kids and took a good care of us all. The Rainbow fall was beautiful ... more and the banyan tree nearby was insane! The star gazing was great even though the conditions were not the best (bright moon). For me the best experience of the tour was getting deep inside the cave - it was amazing, I had never seen anything like it.

Worth the money for sure!

We really enjoyed this tour. It is a long one so be prepared. But they keep you hydrated and fed. I loved the black sand beach, and the sea turtles and the stop along the shore the most. But all of the events were really ... more fun. They packed so much into one day. it was a great tour and we had a lot of fun. The picnic, the stop at the bakery, and the dinner, you were all excellent quality as well.

Out of this world!

The tour was well-organized, and our guide was knowledgeable and personable.

Fabulous event

This tour was one of my families favorite adventure while vacationing in Hawaii. James, our guide, was great. Very knowledgeable, had a sense of humor, and did a great job with the photos. He shared some of his other ... more work with our group and his photos are outstanding. I would do this trip again! But I would pack some additional clothes; it was cold at that elevation.

Awesome - everything

We had the best time Tour guide was so knowledgeable and friendly We learned so much about Hawaii and the big Island and astronomy On the way we learned so much Tour guide was exceptional - always told us what wa ... more s coming - very organised - everything was like clockwork Everything was high quality and expert in every way I can think of nothing to improve

Stargazing tour

The trip was fantastic and Ray was super informative. It was a beautiful night and we got to see a lot of stars and planets and the moon rising as well. It was spectacular and a must try for everyone! We thoroughly enjoy ... more ed it and I highly recommend it!! Also loved the hot chocolate touch at the end because it was quite cold on the slopes. The pickup and drop off was on time. The one thing that could have been better in my opinion was the food options and I also wished we had stopped somewhere to see the spectacular sunset. Apart from that, we really enjoyed it

Serving the big island of hawaii and astronomy enthusiasts around the world, ancient polynesian navigation by the stars, ancient polynesian cultures, including hawaiians, traveled thousands of miles across the oceans between islands from new zealand to easter island, the society islands (including tahiti) and the hawaiian islands.  stars played an important role in polynesian cultures including religious practice and navigation.  hawaiians developed a deep knowledge of the stars, their patterns and how they could be used for navigation.  this allowed them to sail across thousands of miles of ocean at a time when europeans feared straying far from the continent.    , you can find out more here:   https://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/users/steiger/early_hawaiians.htm, tupaia was one of history's greatest navigators, tupaia was born around 1725 in one of the society islands.  he was trained in the origins of the cosmos, history, calendars and star navigation.  he developed an in depth knowledge of the polynesian islands, including their coastlines, harbors and reefs.  , in 1769 tupaia joined captain cook's ship endeavour as navigator and mapmaker.  he drew a map of 130 islands within 2000 mile radius, including the island of oahu.  many of the "discoveries" attributed to captain cook, including hawaii, were the result of tupaia's navigational and map making skills.  tupaia accompanied captain cook on many of his voyages including to new zealand and australia.  you can learn more here:    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/tupaia_(navigator), king kalakaua brings astronomy to hawaii,        king kalakaua reigned over the kingdom of hawaii from 1874 to 1891.  in 1881 he visited the lick observatory near san jose and was so enthusiastic about astronomy he expressed a desire to bring such a telescope to hawaii.  in 1884 a five inch refractor was installed in a dome constructed at punahou school.   unfortunately the telescope mount made the telescope unusable.   in 1892 a meridian telescope was introduced on mauna kea.  an extensive recount of the history of astronomy in hawaii can be found here:   history.dvi (hawaii.edu).

Mauna Kea Observatories

big island astronomy tour

Latitude: 19-49’25” N Longitude: 155-28’15” W Altitude 13,803 ft

Hawaii is Earth’s connecting point to the rest of the Universe.  The summit of Mauna Kea on the Island of Hawaii hosts the world’s largest astronomical observatory, with telescopes operated by astronomers from eleven countries. The combined light-gathering power of the telescopes on Mauna Kea is fifteen times greater than that of the Palomar telescope in California — for many years the world’s largest — and sixty times greater than that of the Hubble Space Telescope.

The telescopes on Maunakea are operated by 12 separate nonprofit observatories

Together, the Observatories make Maunakea the most scientifically productive site for astronomy world-wide.

Visiting Maunakea

The Visitor Information Station (VIS) is open 7 days a week from 8am to 300 pm, with Interpretive Guides and Maunakea Rangers to answer questions. Luas are available twenty-four hours daily. During the day, a solar telescope is available for viewing the sun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is maunakea a volcano.

Mauna Kea (“White Mountain”) is a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii, the largest and southernmost of the Hawaiian Islands. It is located about 300 km (190 miles) from Honolulu, which lies on the island of Oahu. The highest point in the Pacific Basin, and the highest island-mountain in the world, Mauna Kea rises 9,750 meters (32,000 ft) from the ocean floor to an altitude of 4,205 meters (13,796 ft) above sea level, which places its summit above 40 percent of the Earth’s atmosphere. The broad volcanic landscape of the summit area is made up of cinder cones on a lava plateau. The lower slopes of Mauna Kea are popular for hunting, hiking, sightseeing, and bird watching in an environment that is less hostile than the barren summit area.

Why Mauna Kea is a unique site for astronomy?

Mauna Kea is unique as an astronomical observing site. The atmosphere above the mountain is extremely dry — which is important in measuring infrared and submillimeter radiation from celestial sources – and cloud-free, so that the proportion of clear nights is among the highest in the world. The exceptional stability of the atmosphere above Mauna Kea permits more detailed studies than are possible elsewhere, while its distance from city lights and a strong island-wide lighting ordinance ensure an extremely dark sky, allowing observation of the faintest galaxies that lie at the very edge of the observable Universe. A tropical inversion cloud layer about 600 meters (2,000 ft) thick, well below the summit, isolates the upper atmosphere from the lower moist maritime air and ensures that the summit skies are pure, dry, and free from atmospheric pollutants.

Who owns or manages the land at the summit the telescopes are built on?

Starting in the 1960s, the UH Institute for Astronomy provided the scientific impetus for the development of Mauna Kea into the world’s premier site for ground-based astronomical observatories. More major telescopes are now located on Mauna Kea than on any other single mountain peak, and Mauna Kea is widely recognized as offering better conditions for optical, infrared and millimeter/submillimeter measurements than any other developed site.

The University of Hawaii has a lease from the State of Hawaii for all land within a 2.5-mile radius of the site of the UH 2.2-m Telescope – essentially all of the land above 3,700 meters (12,000 ft) elevation – except for the portions of this circular area which lie within the Mauna Kea Ice Age Natural Area Reserve. The leased land is known as the Mauna Kea Science Reserve. The adoption of the Mauna Kea Science Reserve Master Plan by the University of Hawai’i Board of Regents in June 2000 marked a critical milestone in the management of Mauna Kea. Meetings and public hearings spanning a period of nearly two years went into the formulation of the Master Plan, which establishes management guidelines for the next 20 years. The process reflected the community’s deeply rooted concerns over the use of Mauna Kea, including respect for Hawaiian cultural beliefs, protection of environmentally sensitive habitat, recreational use of the mountain, as well as astronomy research. Management of the summit area is now the responsibility of the Office of Mauna Kea Management in Hilo.

At the left is the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. The large cylindrical structure at the right is the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The building in the foreground on the right is the antenna assembly buidling for the submillimeter array. The array is not visible in this photograph; it extends to the lower right.

Telescopes

From left to right, the telescope structures are JCMT, Submillimeter array assembly building, CSO, Subaru, UH 0.6-meter, Keck 1, Keck 2, UKIRT, IRTF, UKIRT, UH 2.2-meter, Gemini, and CFHT. The true summit of Mauna Kea is located immediately in front of the UH 2.2-meter telescope dome in this photograph. In the distance is Haleakala on the island of Maui.

Telescopes

From left to right, the telescope domes are JCMT, Subaru, CSO, Keck 1, Keck 2, IRTF, UH 0.6-meter, UKIRT, CFHT, UH 2.2-meter, and Gemini. The submillimeter array will extend behind the JCMT.

The Subaru Telescope

The Subaru Telescope

The Subaru Telescope is being constructed by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. First light is planned for 1998, and it is expected to be fully operational in 2000. The building in the foreground is the support building, where telescope operators and astronomers will be located. This design was chosen to minimize sources of heat inside the telescope structure, in order to maximize telescope image quality (heat degrades image quality).

VLBA antenna

VLBA antenna

This antenna is one of a large network of radio antennas that comprise the Very Long Baseline Array. The Hawaii antenna is the westernmost antenna; the easternmost antenna is in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Kecks and Subaru Telescopes

Kecks and Subaru Telescopes

In the center are the open domes of the W.M. Keck Observatory. To the right is the Subaru Telescope. Some of the antenna pads for the submillimeter array can be seen to the right of the Subaru Telescope. These concrete pads have been painted brown to help reduce their impact. In the distance, at the left is the almost perfectly formed cinder cone Pu’u Hau Kea, and to its right is Lake Waiau, at an altitude of 13,020 feet. It has an area of about 40 acres.

Keck Telescopes

Keck Telescopes

The mirrors of the Keck telescopes can be seen inside the open domes. The mirrors are relecting light from the sky, so appear blue. Both telescopes are pointing towards the north – a direction chosen to avoid getting sunlight on the telescope. Close-up photographs of the Keck telescopes may be found later in this series.

Telescopes

All of the optical/IR telescopes can be seen in this photograph. In the distance at the right is the Hawaii antenna of the Very Long Baseline Array, located about 2 miles from the summit. The submillimeter telescopes cannot be seen in this photograph.

The Gemini and UH 2.2-meter telescope

The Gemini and UH 2.2-meter telescope

The Gemini telescope, on the right, is presently being built. Adjacent and to the left of the Gemini telescope is the UH 2.2-meter telescope. The extension at the top of the dome of this telescope houses a crane. This crane is used to bring the aluminizing tank to the telescope when the primary mirror is aluminized. (In most other telescopes, the mirror is transported to the aluminizing tank.) In the distance is the dormant volcano Hualalai.

Ridge near the summit

Ridge near the summit

The ridge near the summit, only about 10 feet lower than the summit, was the first area on which telescopes were built on Mauna Kea. The UH 2.2-meter telescope (center) was the first large telescope on Mauna Kea. The Gemini northern 8-meter telescope is the largest and newest telescope in this area (open silver dome).

Telescopes

In the center are the open domes of the W.M. Keck Observatory. These are the largest optical/IR telescopes in the world. Each telescope has a mirror 10 meters in diameter. Each telescope mirror is made up of 36 separate precisely controlled segments, joined together in a honeycomb pattern. At the left of the photograph is the NASA IRTF. To the right of the Keck telescopes is the Subaru telescope (scheduled to become operational in 1999). In the valley below are the submillimeter telescopes – CSO (left), JCMT (center, open), and the submillimeter array. The roads leading to antenna sites for the submillimeter array (also scheduled to become operational in 1999) can be seen on the right. No array antennas had been installed on Mauna Kea when these photographs were taken.

Telescopes

In the foreground on the summit ridge, from left to right, are the UH 0.6-meter telescope (small white dome), the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope, the UH 2.2-meter telescope, the Gemini Northern 8-meter telescope (silver, open) and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. On the right are the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (silver), the twin domes of the W.M. Keck Observatory; behind and to the left of them is the Subaru Telescope. In the valley below are the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (silver), the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (white, open), and the assembly building for the submillimeter array.

Above the summit access road

Above the summit access road

From high above the summit access road, but about 500 feet lower than the summit (at approximately the altitude of the submillimeter telescopes), not all of the telescopes can be seen. The top of the Gemini dome can be seen directly above the summit. This photo shows how steep the access road is. The Keck telescopes and IRTF are hidden behind the summit ridge.

Telescopes

From an altitude of about 13,800 feet (level with the summit, seen on the left of this photo), the Keck telescopes are hidden by the summit ridge. The Gemini northern 8-meter telescope dome is the largest structure from this perspective. In the distance is Haleakala, on the island of Maui.

Hale Pohaku

Hale Pohaku

Because of the extreme altitude of Mauna Kea, astronomers and technicians must acclimatize and live at an intermediate altitude. The Onizuka Center for International Astronomy (also known as Hale Pohaku – Hawaiian for “Stone House”) has living facilities for up to 72 people working at the summit, as well as a visitor center and other support buildings. This photograph is partially obscured by drifting smoke from a distant fire – the 1998 winter was very dry, with drought conditions and extreme fire danger on the Island of Hawaii.

Head for the main street of Carlos Buigas where many of the liveliest bars are to be found and also the popular nightclub Kiss.

There are plenty of English and Irish pubs and bars such as Murphy’s Sports Pub, 007, Tropical, Bus Stop, Flash Back and Underground.

Playa Larga, Salou

Salou has become, through its own merit, one of the main tourist centres on the Costa Daurada. It is also a certified Family Tourism Destination and has been awarded the Sports Tourism for the quality of its facilities.

Along its extensive coastline, protected by the cape of Salou, there is a series of beautiful beaches and coves of fine sand that have an exceptional climate, offering you endless possibilities for enjoying the sea, as well as all kinds of water sports.

The sprawling Paseo de Les Palmeres is one of the most emblematic places of this town in Tarragona, where leisure and fun are guaranteed. The area around Salou will allow you to discover beautiful landscapes, or to spend an unforgettable day at the PortAventura World theme park. Another option is to follow the coastal path, a nine-kilometre trail that stretches along the coastline, as well as the route of the 23 viewpoints, which runs between the sea and the mountains. That's not to mention the local gastronomy, founded on excellent seafood. Salou is located inside Cape Salou , just a few kilometres from the city of Tarragona. This town, which emerged as a small centre with mercantile and fishing origins, has a centuries-old tradition of tourism, thanks to its great climate and a coastline of crystal-clear waters. Between the cape and Vilafortuny , Salou has an extensive stretch of coastline where wide beaches , such as Llevant and Platja Llarga, alternate with secluded coves of fine golden sand. A sun and beach experience that is complemented by the numerous possibilities offered by the marina, where all kinds of leisure boats dock and where you can enjoy all kinds of nautical sports. The city The Paseo de Les Palmeres , which runs parallel to the iconic Llevant Beach , has become the town's main thoroughfare. This long avenue, the main focal point for locals and foreigners alike, is home to some of the city's main tourist attractions. On this busy promenade, beautiful examples of modernist architecture stand out, such as the Cal Bonet Tower , as well as the monument erected in memory of King James I , who chose the coasts of Salou to embark on the conquest of Majorca in the Middle Ages. At nightfall, this part of Salou and the surrounding area is home to a lively nightlife , with numerous terraces, bars, restaurants and clubs. The tour of the city will lead us to discover other places of interest such as the Torre Vella , a 16th century building that is now used as a venue for exhibitions and cultural events, or to see the old railway station , which has now been restored. To round off the wide range of leisure activities on offer in Salou, it is worth heading to the outskirts to enjoy an unforgettable day at the PortAventura World theme park , one of the most prominent theme parks in Spain. Countryside and cuisine The Salou's location invites you to visit various coastal and inland towns of the province. Several kilometers to the east, Tarragona has an important legacy of monuments among sprawling beaches. Its ensemble of Roman archaeology , declared a World Heritage Site, is one of the points of interest in the capital. Also on the coast are towns such as Vila-seca, La Pineda Platja and Cambrils , which combine historic buildings with excellent tourist infrastructure. Inland in the province is the important ensemble of monuments made up of the modernist buildings of the Plaza de Prim and the Casa Navàs de Reus . Also, the Route of the Cistercian Monasteries takes you see the monasteries of Santes Creus and Poblet, the latter of which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In the extreme south of the province lies the Ebro Delta Natural Park , a protected area considered to be one of the most important wetlands on the Iberian Peninsula. The local gastronomy is renowned for its excellent fish and seafood from the coast. The crustaceans of Cambrils and the prawns of San Carlos de la Rápita are famous throughout the area. Romesco sauce (made with dried red peppers, tomatoes and almonds) is used to accompany both the local vegetables and the fish. What's more, the extensive vineyards of the province have produced six intriguing designations of origin: Tarragona, Montsant, Conca de Barberá, Penedés, Priorat and Terra Alta .

Visit Salou, Spain; a travel guide to the resort of Salou

Photo of Salou

Visit Salou

Salou is one of the main resorts on Spain's popular Costa Dorada coast. It is in the Tarragona province in the Catalonia region of Spain.

  • Explore Salou

The Costa Dorado is known as the Gold Coast for its long sandy beaches. Salou is one of the key resorts on this stretch of the coast. Popular for its beaches, its proximity to PortAventura, one of the biggest theme parks in Europe, and to the small airport of Reus which is only 15 minutes away and has regular flights to and from London.

Salou is also only about an hour's drive away from Barcelona .

Salou beach

The main action in Salou is centered around the Passeig Jaume I, a long boulevard running along the edge of the main beach. The boulevard is edged with rows of palm trees and has a wide pedestrian path as well as a cycle path and the road.

There are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from when you are looking for a break from a leisurely day on the beach.

The Jaume I promenade is also home to the fountains of Salou which incorporate 1000 jets and there are regular sound and light spectactles throughout the day and night. The fountains are spread out along the length of the promenade. Each set of fountains has its own timetable for its displays.

There are some historic sights to look out for in Salou including the Santa Maria del Mar church and the Torre Vella, a defensive tower built in 1530 to defend the town against pirates. There is also a lovely coastal path which is 6.5km long and runs between the Pilon area and the Salou lighthouse and passes various beaches and coves along the way.

Salou is not a luxury holiday resort. It is a fairly budget resort with lots of cheap eateries and bars around. The beaches are good, long strips of golden sand and the delights of Catalonia are at your fingertips.

There are two tourist trains to help you get the most out of your visit. The first includes various high points of the town including the Santa Maria church, the Modernist villas and the Jaume I boulevard. The second explores various pretty coves near to Salou and the Salou lighthouse.

There are plenty of opportunities for watersports, golf, karting or tennis. In fact really everything you need is at hand at this lively resort.

The main beach is the Platja Llevant though there are plenty more beaches as well as small sheltered coves. All in all there are 34 blue flag beaches in and around Salou and they are sheltered by Cape Salou.

Nightlife in Salou is lively with plenty of bars and clubs to choose from. However if you are looking for something quiet or authentic this is not the spot for you.

It’s such an easy, family-friendly destination with gorgeous beaches, endless sunshine, great restaurants and a relaxed vibe. It’s also a really affordable place for a family holiday abroad.

But Salou is much more than cheap package holidays! There are so many things to do in Salou and the surrounding area. It’s also a great place to hire a car or bike and get out and explore.

So once you tire of your swimming pool and nearest beach, here’s my mini guide and the best things to do in Salou.

Here are just some of the amazing things to do in Salou, Spain that will guarantee you have a jam-packed and enjoyable holiday to remember!

Where is Salou in Spain?

Salou is a resort town in Costa Dorada. It’s a strip of coastline in the Catalonia region of Spain on the Mediterranean Sea. Beaches here have calm and shallow waters and Salou itself has both smaller coves and long stretches of beaches.

The town is around 98km (approximately a 70-minute drive) south of Barcelona. Salou’s nearest airport is Reus Airport which is only 10km or a 15-minute drive away.

You might think this is an obscure airport that few UK airports fly to direct but that’s not the case at all. Around 15 UK airports fly to Reus during the peak summer months including Cardiff, Glasgow, Belfast, Manchester and several London airports. Jet2, TUI and Ryanair all fly to Reus and their flight times are between two to three hours.

Salou is very close to the cities of Tarragona and Reus and the resort town of Cambrils. All three of these places would make excellent day trips from Salou if you wanted to explore other parts of the region.

1. PortAventura World

salou tourist map

Starting off strong, without a doubt one of the number one things to do in Salou for families is PortAventura World. It’s a huge complex of several theme parks including PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land, Caribe Aquatic Park and SesameAdventure.

There are other, smaller amusement parks in the same general area, too. It’s like a Spanish mecca of adrenaline and entertainment that will keep your kids buzzing all day!

PortAventura Park is the main one and it boasts more than 40 rides and rollercoasters as well as theatrical performances and plenty of restaurants. There are even PortAventura hotels so it’s like a mini DisneyWorld right on the Mediterranean coast.

And like Disney or Universal theme parks, you can buy package deals if you want to visit more than one of PortAventura World’s parks. There are also express passes which might be a good investment in the summer months. It’s a popular place and some lines have an hour’s waiting time so you’ll be glad you splashed out!

Travel Hack Tip: If you’re expecting to love PortAventura World then I would highly recommend staying in one of the nearby hotels where you get early access into the park. The theme park is brilliant and you could easily spend a few days there.

But it is also very hot with little shade so, personally, I’d want to go into the park for two hours each morning and then leave when it gets busy and the queues are 1-2 hours long! My kids would really struggle to stand in queues in the heat for so long.

2. Fountains of Salou

salou tourist map

You might not think fountains are that exciting, though the Bellagio Fountain in Las Vegas and the Trevi Fountain in Rome might beg to differ! And in Salou, the fountains are definitely something you need to check out.

Salou has a series of cool fountains including Font Lluminosa, which is the oldest one, Fonts Ornamentals, Font Cibernètica and Font Laberint. A Catalan architect called Carles Buïgas, who also built the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc in Barcelona, designed Font Lluminosa back in the 1970s. So he knows a thing or two about making water look interesting!

During the summer months from July 1st to September 10th, you can catch all four fountains performing their own light and music displays every day. It goes without saying that your kids will love running through these jets. Pack a spare change of clothes in your daypack just in case they get soaked!

Fonts Ornamentals has a light display which is ongoing between 6pm and 10pm. It’s pretty cool because there is a walkway across the fountain where the water sprays an arch over your head! Font Cibernètica performs at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm and Font Lluminosa’s display is at 10:30pm.

In the spring and autumn months, they all perform on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (bank holidays too) somewhere between 10pm to 11pm.

3. Visit the beautiful coves around Salou

salou tourist map

Some of the best things to do in Salou have to be the beaches! There are two main beaches (more on those soon!) and several smaller cove beaches called the Cap de Salou Coves.

There are five in total: Cala de la Vinya, Cala els Crancs, Cala Morisca, Cala de la Font and Cala de la Penya Tallada.

These coves are further east of the main strip beaches so you’ll probably need a car to drive to them. Or, you can walk along the Punta del Cap de Salou hiking trail (if you’re feeling active!) because seeing them is definitely worth the effort.

You could easily swim between some of them too as Cala de la Vinya and Cala Font are very close together. Just watch where you’re standing as the coast is rockier here.

These coves are much quieter than the main beaches with more rugged, natural scenery though the payoff is fewer facilities and things to do nearby. But if you’ve got warm, clear waters to swim in and lush scenery to look at, what more do you need?!

4. Salou Tourist Train

When you start travelling as a family, all the cultural tours you used to enjoy doing are soon replaced by more entertaining and stimulating activities. You can have the best of both worlds with the Salou Tourist Train.

It is literally an adorable open-door red bus that looks like a toy train. The train departs outside Salou’s tourist office and drives a circular route around Salou’s main landmarks and points of interest. Some of these are the fountains, the Jaume I monument, the City Park, Torre Vella art gallery and the Church of Santa Maria del Mar.

The Salou Tourist Train runs approximately every half hour and it’s only 6€ for adults and 4€ for kids aged 3+. They have audio guides for both adults and children (if you can persuade them to wear their guides for more than two minutes!) in several languages.

5. Llevant Beach

salou tourist map

Llevant beach is one of the most popular beaches in Salou and therefore one of the top things to do in Salou! It runs parallel to the promenade, Passeig de Jaume I, where all the fountains are. It’s surprising how many activities and amenities this city beach manages to squeeze in because it’s only 1.2km long.

There are two huge car parks on Passeig de Jaume I so finding somewhere to park won’t be an issue. Plus, there are tons of public toilets along the promenade. Showers, beach bars, ice cream shacks, volleyball courts, restaurants and so much more are available too.

If you love lounging on a beach with everything you need nearby (and you don’t mind the crowds!) then Llevant is perfect. You can hire a sunlounger and beach umbrella or bring your own.

Travel Hack Tip: Try Kayaking!

You can hire kayaks while you’re in Salou which is a great family activity to have fun, keep fit, stay cool and see Salou from a different perspective. Kayaks can be hired from Salou Yacht Club which is between Ponent Beach and Llevant Beach.

6. Ponent Beach

On the opposite side of the port to Llevant is Ponent beach. While it’s much narrower and has fewer facilities, it’s usually the quieter of the two. Ponent also has a huge children’s play area with lots of palm trees to offer some much-needed shade.

It feels less commercialised yet there are still a few restaurants and bars on the sand. In the off-season, it’s a popular place for the locals to go fishing.

But the difference between the two beaches is negligible. They’re both beautiful, clean beaches with soft sand and calm coastlines. Lifeguards are on duty during the day in the peak seasons and you will no doubt have a great beach day no matter which you choose.

If you want to give both of them a shot, head to Llevant in the morning first when it’s quieter and then go to Ponent beach after lunch.

7. Camí de Ronda Coastal Path

salou tourist map

Who doesn’t love going for a hike in 30°C heat on a relaxing beach holiday? It’s actually quite fun if you venture out in the morning or the evening when the sun isn’t as strong. And keeping active will help you feel a little less lethargic when you return home!

The Camí de Ronda is a 6.5km coastal walk beginning at Llevant beach and finishing at an old lighthouse called Far de Cap Salou. The first 2km of the path is fully paved and the other 4.5km is a natural path.

The lighthouse itself is pretty cool but the views of the rocky cliffs in this part of Salou are stunning. It’s definitely a hike to do around sunset if you can!

You can also walk down the coastal path in the other direction along Ponent beach, Vilafortuny beach and Cavet beach towards Cambrils. But don’t forget you’ll also have to walk back unless one of you stays behind and picks you up further down the track!

Remember to pack your trainers because walking 6.5km in flip-flops won’t be much fun.

8. Passeig de Jaume I

On the surface, Passeig de Jaume I looks like just another pedestrianised street. It runs alongside Salou’s main beach, Llevant, and it’s just a big slab of marble, right?

In reality, there is more to do on this street than you might expect. First, it’s dedicated to James I the Conqueror and there is a huge monument to him in the middle of the street. He was a 13th-century Catalan king and he’s an icon to the Catalonian people.

Palm trees line both sides of the street leaving a huge walkway in the middle. And there’s plenty of room to gather around the Fountains of Salou for the nighttime displays.

Salou’s name features in the middle of the strip in huge letters which you can usually find children attempting to climb over. But it’s a great place for an Instagrammable picture.

This promenade and the street just behind it is where you can find a lot of restaurants, ice cream cafes, souvenir shops and tour companies. The tourist office is on this street as well as bike rentals, snorkelling excursions, boat tours and kite surfing.

Don’t forget to check out the old olive tree that grows on the corner of Passeig de Jaume I and Calle de Barcelona. It’s roughly 1,000 years old and looks unrecognisable compared to every other olive tree you’ve ever seen because of its gargantuan size.

9. Ferrari Land

salou tourist map

Located in PortAventura World, Ferrari Land is exactly what you think it is. It is a Ferrari-themed amusement park with over 16 rides and games where everything is gold and red and has at least a vague connection to cars.

Plus, they lean hard into the Italian theme. You’ll find cypress trees, a mini version of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence and restaurants like Ristorante Cavallino serving Italian cuisine.

One of the most surprising and coolest things about Ferrari Land is that it’s home to Europe’s highest and fastest roller coaster. Yes, right in Salou! Who would have thought that would be one of the top things to do in Salou?! The Red Force looks absolutely terrifying and hopefully your children who are tall enough to ride it agree.

With any luck, they’ll satisfy their need for speed on the Junior Red Force coaster or the racing tracks. There’s also an exhibit on former Ferrari racing legends and some of their old Formula 1 cars.

10. Caribe Aquatic Park

Isn’t it against the law to go on a family holiday to Spain and not go to a water park? You’d think so considering how many of them there are all over the country. The PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park has to be up there as one of the best, though.

There are over 16 attractions and pools in the water park including waterfalls, wave pools, pirate ships and mega slides. There’s plenty to do for kids of all ages and lots of Caribbean-themed restaurants and snack bars.

If your kids aren’t too busy plummeting down slides with names like “Torrent” and “Rapid Race” then you can float along Caribe’s lazy river. Or, you can relax on one of their sun loungers by Bahama Beach. There’s easily enough to do to spend a whole day here.

11. Day Trip to Tarragona

salou tourist map

There are so many things to do in Salou that you can have heaps of fun on your holiday even if you never leave the town. But there are so many other beautiful places less than 20 minutes away that it would be a shame not to explore them!

The City of Tarragona is only 17km north up the coast from Salou which is a 20-minute drive or a 15-minute train journey. It’s a port city with sandy buildings and many of them date back to its history as a Roman colony.

You can even take a guided tour of all the sites connected to Tarragona’s Roman heritage. There’s the Roman amphitheatre which overlooks the coastline, a 1st-century chariot racing track, an old Roman aqueduct and a Roman Forum.

Honestly, there are so many ruins in the city you’ll walk right past them just strolling through the streets! And you have to visit the Roman Walls. You won’t believe how much of the old city wall is still standing after 2,000 years.

Of course, any Spanish city isn’t complete unless it has an absolutely spectacular cathedral. Tarragona Cathedral (or to use its full name, the Catedral Basílica Metropolitana i Primada de Santa Tecla de Tarragona) is magnificent. Its courtyard has a beautiful water feature and walking around all the beautiful orange trees will surely put you in a good mood.

Tarragona also has lots of little shops and boutiques and traditional Spanish restaurants. This part of Spain is famous for its seafood and rice dishes so you can’t go wrong with a plate of mussels or a big bowl of paella.

Tarragona Wine Region is essentially Cava Country. It would be rude to not ask for a glass of fizz to accompany your seafood, you are on holiday!

12. Capellans Beach

Capellans beach is not quite on the same scale as the Llevant and Ponent beaches but it’s not small enough to be a cove. Overlooked by residential apartments and a favourite amongst locals, Capellans is ideal for older couples and families with very young children.

Its smaller size means you don’t need to walk as far from your sun lounger to get to the local beach bar or swim in the sea. And it’s much easier to keep an eye on your kids playing in the sea while you’re sunbathing as there are fewer places for them to run off to.

You can also rent kayaks from this beach and there’s even a beach path for wheelchair users. How cool is that?! More beaches need to have paths so those with extra accessibility needs can dip their toes in the water too!

If you fancy going for a wander, the walkway up the cliffs next to Capellans offers beautiful views of the beach and the other coves along the coastline.

13. SesameAdventure

salou tourist map

You’ve had a Ferrari-themed amusement park and a Caribbean-themed water park as well as the main theme park. Surely that’s everywhere covered in PortAventura World? Oh no, not quite! SesameAdventure is part of PortAventura and caters to the littlest of little ones.

Not only that, SesameAdventure’s theme is a delightful mix of Sesame Street and Polynesia. Even more bizarrely, it fully pulls it off and a trip to this theme park is an absolute delight.

Roller coasters here are much slower, less scary and closer to the ground than the ones at the other parks. There are 3D rides that the whole family can enjoy and theatrical performances featuring Elmo, Bert, Ernie and the whole gang. Many of the rides, like Elmo’s Farm and the Enchanted Garden, have no height restrictions.

And if the character names are confusing, keep in mind that Sesame Street characters have different names in Spanish! Bert is Blas, Ernie is Epi and Big Bird is La Gallina Caponata. In fact, the show’s name in Spain is Barrio Sésamo so you can teach your kids some Spanish while you’re there!

14. Day Trip to Reus

salou tourist map

Reus is a great Salou day trip alternative to Tarragona. Or you could easily do both if you’re staying in Salou for longer than a week! It couldn’t be a more convenient place to drive to from your base in Salou.

It’s the capital of the Costa Dorada region but it’s very different to Salou and other resort towns along the coast. There are fewer tourists and it’s the architecture, galleries, museums, and gastronomic scene rather than beaches which makes Reus a worthwhile place to visit.

It really isn’t surprising that the architecture in Reus is so interesting because it happens to be the birthplace of Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí is famous for designing several structures around Barcelona and the wider Catalonia region like La Sagrada Familia. In Reus, you can check out the Gaudí museum and tourist centre to learn more about his life and work.

And if architecture is your cup of tea, take a stroll along the Reus Modernist Route. There are 23 buildings on this self-guided circular walk, starting and ending in Market Square. There are plaques outside the buildings explaining a bit about who designed them and their history.

If you can only head inside one of the buildings on the route, make it Casa Navas. It’s an intricately decorated townhouse covered in colourful mosaics and stained glass windows.

Like Tarragona, Reus and the vineyards on the outskirts of the city produce many spirits and wines. Museu del Vermut in Reus is the largest vermouth museum in the world (don’t attempt to try all 6,000 varieties!) and is a great place to eat dinner too.

15. Llarga Beach

Because of Salou’s location on a jagged part of the Catalan coastline, it offers more beaches in one area than many other resort towns. It has long stretches, tiny coves and some smaller beaches in between.

Llarga beach is one of those. You won’t find any sun loungers here but you won’t have to share your slice of sand with anyone else. The cliffs curve around the beach which makes it feel like a safer place to swim. Plus, you’re surrounded by vegetation here instead of high-rise resorts which will make you feel like you’re on an island.

Because it’s smaller and in more of a residential area, it’s a little difficult to find parking so get there early. But it still has all the facilities you need to spend an entire beach day here.

16. Llenguadets Beach

Make it a double-header beach day by leaving your car parked at Llarga and walking around the cliffside boardwalk to Llenguadets beach. Better yet, you can swim around the cliffs as long as you are careful to avoid the rocks!

Llenguadets beach is a bonus cove that’s right next to Llarga. Honestly, it’s about a five-minute stroll away. Walk up to one of the many viewpoints near these two beaches if you want somewhere beautiful to watch the sunset in Salou.

17. Day Trip to Cambrils

salou tourist map

Reus and Tarragona are perfect day trips from Salou if you are travelling as a couple or family with very young or older kids. But if you have kids in primary school you might find there’s more for them to do in another resort town.

Luckily, Cambrils is 8km south of Salou and only a 15-minute drive away. You get a change of scenery and your kids will struggle to get bored with all the things there are to do in Cambrils. Win-win!

If your children prefer active adventures to theme parks, pay a visit to Jumpland Aventura Ecologica. Instead of roller coasters and rides, they have zip-lines, ropes courses and climbing walls. You could even hire bikes in Salou for the day and cycle to Cambrils because the Camí de Ronda coastal path and beach promenade connects Salou to Cambrils.

You’ll find the beaches in Cambrils much more relaxed than Salou and probably less busy. Their volleyball courts are makeshift and there are fewer sun loungers for hire. But the main beach, Forès beach, still has lots of restaurants, bars and shops along the seafront.

Slightly further south of the main town is where you’ll find the smaller, less crowded beaches. Just some of the ones you can visit are Cambrils, Llosa and Arcadia.

One of the best beaches near Cambrils is actually halfway to Salou. Vilafortuny beach is a vast, clean stretch of fine sand and is perfect to walk on as you are unlikely to have to wade through too many crowds. Because it has fewer swimmers and the water is less calm than other beaches in the area, it’s ideal for renting jet skis or trying out other water sports.

18. Carles Buïgas Nightlife

No, the Catalan architect Carles Buïgas who died in 1973 does not run a pub crawl. But the street in Salou that’s named after him, Carrer de Carles Buïgas, is where you should head if you want to experience the best of Salou’s nightlife.

It offers everything from bars, clubs, live music and even karaoke. And yes, if you love visiting English and Irish pubs during your summer holidays in Spain then this is where you’ll find them. Most even organise weekly pub quizzes too!

Those who love a dance should head to Kiss, the best nightclub on the strip. Keep in mind that there aren’t loads of nightclubs in Salou but demand for them is high. It’s not too uncool to head to the clubs early, especially when you’re more likely to get discounted or free entry and cheaper drinks!

19. Visit Salou’s Historic Buildings

It’s easy to forget that these modern resort towns existed long before tourism boomed along the Spanish coastline and have so much history. Salou is no different and has its fair share of fascinating monuments.

Take the old 19th-century Customs and Harbour Masters Office on Plaça Bonet. Salou used to be an important exporter of liquor in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. And while the new updated much of the building in the 20th century, it still has its horse trough and drinking fountain.

Today, Torre Vella might be an art gallery and one of the most important cultural things to do in Salou. But in the 16th century, it was a watchtower designed to spot any pirates approaching Salou’s shores. It also has some beautiful gardens with impressive sculptures.

Masia Catalana, not far from Capellans beach, is a faithful recreation of what a Catalan farmhouse would have looked like hundreds of years ago. They even keep animals like chickens, donkeys and goats onsite so that might be a fun attraction if you have small kids!

20. Eat the Local Catalan Cuisine

salou tourist map

Tapas, tortilla, paella… Everyone loves Spanish food, but it’s not all local to Catalonia. One of the top things to do in Salou on your summer holiday there is to taste as much Catalan cuisine as you can find.

Seafood, grilled vegetables and cured meats are at the heart of traditional dishes in this area. They love a charcuterie board with flavourful cured sausage, bread, tomato, cheese, olives and some kind of chip. Anything with aioli on it (a mixture of garlic and olive oil) is a winner in Catalonia and some even call it “Catalan mayonnaise” because locals eat it with everything.

White beans, aubergine, prawns, rice and anchovies are staples in Catalan dishes. And there’s lots of French influence too so it’s not surprising if you see restaurant menus in this area serving foie gras and duck confit.

But at the end of the day, you should still eat patatas bravas, churros and croquetas if that’s what you want. You’re on holiday! It’s your duty to eat as many delicious Spanish dishes as you can.

Other things to do in the area…

There are so many things to do in Salou but if you’re looking for more then here are some other things I loved doing in the area.

Paddle boarding near Salou was incredible. We paddled to some beautiful caves and got off our boards to explore. The water was calm and warm so even if you’re new to paddle boarding it’s a great activity to try!

Here’s a link to paddle board hire in Salou.

Visiting Cartoixa d’Escaladei, an old monastery and museum complex was incredible and if you have a car for your holiday to Salou then I highly recommend a visit. Not only was the monastery beautiful but the surrounding mountains and the drive through the countryside to get there is breathtaking!

If you’ll be visiting lots of historic attractions during your holiday then it might be worth getting the Catalonia Monument Pass .

Another incredible day out from Salou would be to visit Montserrat Monastery. There’s an amazing tour you can do from Salou and you also go to see the crypt of Gaudi.

While you’re in Salou you can also take a full day trip to Barcelona as it isn’t far away! Here’s a full day trip to Barcelona from Salou that includes free time in the city.

salou tourist map

If you’re a sucker for incredible scenery then you can’t miss a trip to Siurana, an incredible mountain village with the most amazing views. If you’ve got a car I recommend driving yourself but you can take a trip from Salou that includes a visit to other pretty villages.

Monday 1st of August 2022

Only go to Salou if you have a car so you can easily get to the nice places outside of Salou that are mentioned in this article - avoid Salou itself which we found to be grubby and the main area is not a place we would take young children again - very rough and drugs openly being taken/smoked. Main beach is extremely crowded in summer - not like the pretty pictures in the article. We stayed in the area for a week to go to port adventura. With hindsight, would stay in a different area and travel in just for port aventura or would have ensured we had a car so we could get out the area to go to the nice places like Reus/ Tarragona! Port Aventura also good and nicely presented - be prepared for long queues in summer but they do get shorter between 1-4pm if you can tolerate the heat. Caribe water park hugely overcrowded but they can do this as clear they are not expecting repeat customers. Little or no shade and long queues. Get there 10mins before water park opens so you can get somewhere to site with shade otherwise you will be on the concrete floor with no shade in the midday sun - expect not to get on anything but just to go in the big pools with the family then you will have a good time.

Salou Tourist Guide, Map, Photographs and Information, Costa Dorada Spain

Resorts in Spain. Figueretes Ibiza

Resorts in Spain.

Spanish resort tourist information & guide, page contents, salou description & photographs, spain.

Overview Salou is the main tourist resort of the Costa Dorada, and as such is much busier and less 'Spanish' than some of its neighbouring resorts. If you're looking for an entertaining holiday with plenty to do, and long sandy beaches to bathe and enjoy activities on though, Salou could be the perfect choice. There are nearby theme parks to visit, plenty of restaurants to cater for all tastes and lifeguards to help keep the fun safe on the beaches. And as Salou is only twenty minutes from Reus airpor t, the trip to the resort is easy and quick.

Salou is the main holiday resort on Spain's sunny Costa Dorada. Sandwiched between the quaint, fishing harbour of Cambrils and the peaceful resort of La Pineda, Salou is a bright, vibrant town. Its main appeal lies in its easy going atmosphere. Add fantastic beaches, the theme park PortAventura and the close proximity of places such as Barcelona to the mix, and you've got the perfect recipe for a fun packed yet relaxing holiday.

Who should go? Salou really is a family resort , and is almost completely aimed at attracting British tourists. You're bound to meet other people to have a good time with, and entertaining teenagers and children should be simple with so many distractions for them to get involved in.

One of the world's most famous rollercoasters, the Dragon Khan, belongs to the nearby theme park PortAventura, and would be a great treat for teenagers or adventurous adults. There's even a chance to see Catalonia's wildlife at the Ebro Delta National Park, for those who'd like to make the trip.

Salou Beaches

Salou Beach

The Costa Dorada, or Golden Coast, is renowned for its long stretches of soft, sandy beaches. Salou's main beach, made up of fine, golden sand, is one of the best on the Costa Dorada, backed by a broad, flower decked, palm lined promenade, complete with fountains.

This long beach of fine grain golden sand is backed by the Miramar Promenade, Paseo de Miramar.

The beach has a gentle slope into the shallow blue crystaline waters of the Mediterranium sea, making it ideal for the kids.

Salou / Information / Transport

Tourist train of salou.

The Salou tourist train offers two different circular routes

A different way to get to know Salou and its main places of interest is the tourist train. It offers a single route that allows you to discover the most beautiful and emblematic corners, such as the Monument to Jaume I, the Ornamental Fountains, the Capitania, the Modernist Houses, the Monument al Pescador, the beginning of the Camino de Ronda or the Coast, the Masía Catalana , the City Park, the Torre Vella, the church of Santa María del Mar, from the 18th century. In addition, the train goes to PortAventura World. During Easter 2024, the tourist train operates only on March 25, 26 and 27 with 2 routes.  Prices and schedules are as indicated below for 2024.    The tour can start at any of the marked stops, and you can go all the way around until you reach the stop where you got off. The tour passes through some of the points of interest mentioned. Consult the route and timetables at the end. Prices: The prices of the Salou tourist train for 2024 are as follows: Adults (+14 years to 65 years): 6 euros Children (3 to 14 years): 4 euros Senior (+65 years): 4 euros People with disabilities (+ 33%, presenting certificate): 4 euros. No electric scooters Groups of people with disabilities : 2.5 euros per person. Every 10 people with disabilities, 1 free monitor Family ticket (2 adults and 1 child): 15 euros. Each extra child is 3 euros more. The tourist train offers personalized audio guides for adults and children, available in 5 languages: Catalan, Spanish, English, French and Russian. All tickets can be purchased directly on the tourist train (it accepts payment by card, which is the recommended system). You CANNOT get on and off the tourist train with the same ticket. The train has adapted ramps and space for wheelchairs (depending on availability). Baby or small child strollers must be folded and left in the basket provided for this purpose. Schedules: The Salou tourist train changes its schedules depending on the time of year. The detailed table of the schedules can be consulted in the attached image, as well as a map of the route. To know the specific times at the different stops, consult the attached pdf document. The prevailing schedule is always that of the stop, but it may vary. If you have questions, you can call 977 35 01 02 to confirm the schedules. A spectacular tour: The tourist train has stops at Masía Catalana, a construction originally conceived in 1974 and which today hosts, among others, the craft market during the summer months. Nearby is the City Park , a natural space. The Salou tourist train also allows you to discover the majesty of the Modernist houses on Paseo Jaume I or the church of Santa María del Mar, which dates back to the 18th century. Nearby we see the Captaincy building (1820), one of the main buildings of the Port of Salou.  Finally, and now in the main artery of the city, you can admire the Monument al Pescador - the work of Ramon Ferran -, as well as the Ornamental Fountains , an authentic spectacle of water, light and color. And the Monument al Rei Jaume I , a tribute to the Catalan monarch who set sail from Salou in the 13th century towards the conquest of Mallorca. The train reaches the beginning of the Camino de Ronda , and includes the 15th century Torre Vella on the route. Happy trip with the tourist train and enjoy Salou!
