Poros

Poros Yacht Charters

Explore poros on your luxury yacht charter in greece.

The result of two islands merging into one – Sphería and Kalávria, permanently fused together after the eruption of the Méthana volcano in 273 BC – Poros is adorned with vast areas of lush greenery, celestial beaches, and a vibrant, cosmopolitan ambiance; evident in its store-lined waterfront, grandiose mansions, elegant cobblestone streets and intimate, but popular restaurants and cafes.

Famous for its geographic treasures, the island of Poros is filled with rolling hills and mountainous terrain, and its coasts serve as a haven for some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, making it the perfect stop on a yacht charter in Greece .

Dotted with history throughout, Poros has Greek mythology and tradition at the core of its charm. In fact, its strategic location made it a significant location during the 1821 Greek Revolution, and in the early 19th century, it was even the site of the first Greek naval base.

Poros Yacht Charters – Things to Do & See

Poros yacht charters

Temple of Poseidon : Built around 520 BC, and a representation of typical Doric architecture, today, the Temple of Poseidon is the site of ancient ruins. An icon of Greek mythology, this haunt is believed to be the place where Demosthenes – an Athenian orator pursued by King Philip, of Macedonia – committed suicide by drinking poison, while begging for the temple’s “sanctuary” and protection.

Clock Tower : Situated at the elevated endpoint of winding, narrow streets, the historic clock tower – built in 1927 – boasts uninhibited, panoramic views of the entire island of Poros below. As the highest point on the island, this tower welcomes travelers to Poros; standing tall with its dignified and fortress-like shape.

Lemon Forest : Appropriately named for its plethora of more than 30,000 lemon and orange trees, Lemon Forest – a verdurous hilltop on the coast of Peloponnese – is just a short boat ride from the island of Poros. Accessible only by boat, this unique landmark offers one of the most stunning views of Poros, and is surrounded by pristine and historic islets: like Boúrtzi, with its Byzantine fortress; Modi, with its Mycenaean shipwreck; and Daskaleió, with its chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Love Bay : Verdant with towering pine trees, low enough to the ground that their plentiful needles grace the top of the emerald-green waters of the Saronic Gulf, Love Bay is a piece of true paradise. Covered in fine white pebbles, this beach area is the perfect place to go camping or take in Poros’ idyllic horizon views.

Top destinations

Only just an island, Poros is separated from the mainland of the Peloponnese by a 200m stretch of water a mere 58km from Athens – there’s a fast hydrofoil service which does the journey in an hour. As such it gets quite busy at the weekends as a getaway place for trendy Athenians. Midweek it’s rather more sleepy and traditional.

In fact you have two choices if you come here. On one side of the channel Poros town has a lively waterfront and the island itself has some picturesque villages and some beautiful sandy coves and tiny beaches set against lush vegetation, accessible by bus or little ferries from the port. Most are quite organised and set up for visitors although you can find more secluded ones if you want to escape with a picnic.

Alternatively you can stay on the mainland at Galatas which is more rustic than its island sister. You’ll find a great selection of bars and restaurants, most with nice views across to Poros island. There are several small beaches along the nearby coastline accessible by bus, taxi or water-taxi. But generally tourism here is not as well developed.

The great thing is that you can enjoy the best of both worlds as any number of small taxi boats cross between island and mainland 24 hours a day. It’s no more difficult than crossing a river – the good news is that nobody has built a bridge yet which would rather spoil the stunning vista.

Our recommendation: small offshore islands almost within touching distance of the mainland always have appeal and Poros is no exception. It’s totally charming and if you’re island hopping you really should stop off for an overnight and a swim. If on a road trip, Poros is a brilliant place to break your journey around the Peloponnese.

Flotilla holidays & yacht charters from Poros, Greece

Whatever type of sailing holiday or yacht charter you opt for, Poros is the ideal starting point. A quiet quay with local eating establishments, traditional fishermen as your neighbours, the occasional ferry and easy access to your chosen sailing area and Athens airport.

Spare yourself the nightmare of starting your sailing holiday from one of Athens’ noisy coastal ports such as Kalamaki or Lavrio. Enjoy the beginning and end of your sailing holiday by wandering the quayside restaurants & bars of Poros or shopping in the winding streets. You even save yourself the long beat back north to an Athens base against the Meltemi . In Poros, your sailing holiday starts the moment you step off the ferry.

Rod Heikell’s West Aegean pilot guide describes Poros by saying; “The approach to the town is one of the most attractive in Greece...” and goes on, “...it has something else other than the appearance of a little Greek Venice, it has a sensuality, a calm, and what can only be described as a conviviality...” . But Rod Heikell is not alone, Lawrence Durrell , described it as “the happiest place I have ever known” and in her “Greek Odyssey” television series, Joanna Lumley reveals how her love affair with Greece started with a chance visit to Poros; “It was just enchanting...the best holiday ever” . What better place to start and end your sailing holiday!

Whichever way you look at it, Poros is a great place to start and end your sailing holiday and well worth the extra hour of travel. Greek Sails are also the only yacht charter company in Poros, so if you are being offered a sailing holiday with a “Saronic fleet” and from a Poros base, it will be with us; there is no other yacht base here.

Greece - Poros

Densely forested Poros is a picture-perfect island in the Saronic Gulf boasting beautiful beaches, pastel-coloured neoclassical buildings and ancient ruins. A narrow strait, not much wider than your typical river, separates Poros from the mainland and Aegina and Hydra are just a short sail away.

Indeed, it was recently voted as one of the most beautiful islands in the world.

Call or contact your friendly Abberley charter broker here for assistance in planning an unforgettable yachting vacation in Poros and the Cyclades.

Poros – Top yacht charter destination

With Athens about an hour away, Poros is an ideal base from which to explore the city’s ancient offerings – and the pace of life here is much less hectic. Sailing down the narrow straits between Poros and the Peloponessos feels like sailing down a river or one of Venice’s canals. Boats are anchored in forested coves, swimmers splash about in the clear water and people sip drinks and tuck into food at the tavernas lining the shore. Poros town and Galati bustle with life and have some great artisanal shops and restaurants. And when you want some tranquillity, all you have to is wander down to your yacht and recline in luxury.

Poros – Things to Do

Russian Bay, five kilometres from Poros town, is a spectacular place to drop anchor and explore the ruins of a 17th-century Russian dockyard, set right on the beach. Wander the cobbled streets of Poros town and pick up local fare such as fresh fish, local wines and exquisite hand-made weavings. Small and secluded Love Bay beach, set among trees and with clear emerald water, is another stunning place in which to drop anchor. For a larger, more organised beach, Askeli is a swimmer’s paradise.

Poros – Gourmet Experience

Taverna Poseidon is the epitome of a Greek fish tavern, serving huge portions of seafood and fresh salads, with spectacular marina views and traditional Greek dancing. Kanali Beach Bar and Restaurant has a fresh, all-white outside area right on the shore and a menu offering fresh seafood and excellent steaks. For one of the best moussakas on the island, try harbour-side Taverna Gia Mas in Poros, and to swap stories and dine on excellent seafood, the Yachting Café has a cosmopolitan ambience and wonderful marina views.

Poros – Nightlife

Poros has a lively nightlife during the summer months, with many cafes and bars on the seafront open until the wee hours. The beach bar at Love Bay is a beautiful spot for sundowners, as is Malibu Bar in Poros town, right next to the water. For the more energetic, Pirate Bar in Parikia old town is a vibrant, quirky spot filled with cosy alcoves and a great cocktail menu.

The island of Poros is situated 32 miles South of Piraeus in the southern part of the Saronic Gulf. Poros is separated from the mainland coast of Galatas and the Peloponnese by a 200 meter wide canal. The Island has approximately 4250 inhabitants.

Poros is rich in ancient history with a Museum and several archaeological sites around the island. Including the ruins of the Doric temple of Poseidon. Poros was the birthplace of King Theseus of Athens, son of Poseidon and mythological hero. With the help of Arianna he defeated the Minotaur in the labyrinth of Crete at the time of Minos.

Poros and Galatas are excellent starting points for Charter Holidays in the beautiful Saronic Golf. The island is covered with lush pine forests that descend to gorgeous beaches lapped by crystal clear waters, ideal for scuba diving, snorkeling and other water sports.

Poros is a good place to buy provisions and has an excellent Night Life with many Bars, Shops and Greek Taverns. Sailing Itineraries should include Hydra, the 'Saint-Tropez' of Greece, Spetses and Aegina, as well as stops on the Peloponnese east coast. If you have time visit the tiny villages of Leonidion, the mountain village of Yerakas, Ermoni and Nafplion.

Yacht Charter Poros

aegean yachting Poros

Poros is separated from the mountainous Peloponnese by a narrow sea channel, and its protected setting makes the main settlement of Poros Town seem like a cheery lakeside resort. Its pastel hued houses stack up the hillside to a clock tower and make a vibrant first impression.

Poros is made up of two land masses connected by a tiny isthmus. Sferia, which is occupied mainly by the town of Poros, and the much larger and mainly forested Kalavria, which has the island’s beaches and seasonal hotels scattered along its southern shore. Poros still maintains a sense of remoteness in its sparsely populated, forested interior. The Peloponnesian town of Galatas lies on the opposite shore, making Poros a useful base from which to explore the ancient sites of the Peloponnese.

Separated from the mainland by a 350-metre strait, Poros barely qualifies as an island at all. Popular with Brits and candinavians – more than any other Argo-Saronic island. There are in fact two islands, Sferia the town of Poros and the far larger Kalavria, separated from each other by a miniature canal, now silting up, spanned by a bridge. The town is a busy place, with constant traffic of shipping and people thus it is not the ideal place where you can fin peace.

The specific geographical coordinates of Poros island are 37°31’20.7″N 23°28’16.0″E in Aegean Sea. The total area is 49.600 square kilometres and Poros population according to the last census is about 4000 inhabitants.

Welcome to  Poros

“Saronic Bliss”

yacht charter poros greece

 A YACHT FRIENDLY SARONIC PARADISE

Directy opposite the Peloponnese, separated only by a small channel of sea, lies Poros, one of the most interesting islands of the Saronic gulf .  Poros was formed after the eruption of Methana resulting in two main areas, Spheria and Calabria. Today the main town of Poros occupies Spheria while Calabria is filled with hundreds of pine trees surrounding the famous clock tower of the island. This island is immensely green due to the color of the trees, which from the distance create an exquisite image of its hill connecting with the sea.

Considered by many to be the friendliest yacht destination in Greece as well as having a very rich naval history, dating back to the 18th and 19th century. In the past, Russia had created a shipyard to horde their fleet in order to support Greece during their wars against Turkey. The remains of this dockyard are still present today for visitors to see as well as a very pleasant beach available to enjoy.

Poros is a very hospitable island and has a reputation for treating guests exceptionally well with respect and politeness. Top class fish, affordable prices and extraordinary service are all things you will experience upon your visit. A highly efficient road network allows you to drive around easily and access most locations.

Not to mention all the fun to be had while on a  sailing yacht in nice calm weather, unique scenerary and incredible array of little bays available for mooring.  Poros is an island which will have you in absolute bliss!

3 TOP THINGS TO DO IN POROS

yacht charter poros greece

Built in 1922, the clock tower is one of the islands most iconic structures which can be seen from almost anywhere on the island. Standing tall in the center of the island, dominating the surrounding view. A walk from the waterfront to the tower might be more draining than you think, however once you arrive at the top surely the reward will be well worth it. The view is spectacular and an incredible breeze revitalizes and enchants you. This being the reason it is such a popular location for well-known photographers trying to capture the atmosphere and incredible views experienced here.

Don’t forget to take a photo of your sailing yacht while you are at the top! The best time to visit would be during the late afternoon or close to sunset, due to the high temperatures present during the day.

yacht charter poros greece

Being close to Athens, one can imagine everything is a little more sophisticated here. This has no effect whatsoever on the relaxed atmosphere and vibe of the island which welcomes you with its colorful gardens and neoclassical buildings. Walk in the main street and watch the yachts mooring along the way, stop and dine in one of the many restraunts available on the seafront (ask your skipper for the best option according to your preferences) and finally return back to town for a fun night out!

Poros is quite lively at night and provides all types of alternatives to enjoy in the evening. For those not interested in fancy party nights, we encourage you to sample a cocktail at one of the many sea view bars or cafes. Taking full advantage of your yacht sailing vacation!

yacht charter poros greece

Our general and friendly advice for all our yacht sailing guests is to experience the essence of each location. Meaning that the true spirit and beauty of the islands can be found in the people, food, history and sights which is a much richer experience onboard a yacht.

Poros has nice flat surfaced roads which allow you to visit most places and take in the aromas of all the natural suroundings. Also, granting accessibility to amazing views and hidden gems scattered around the island.

There are many car and quad rentals available in order to spend half the day driving around getting acquainted with the locals, testing out less mainstream restraunts and possibly discovering some hidden surprises or beaches.

yacht charter poros greece

In my opinion, Poros is a wonderful island! It might not be the most traditional of the Saronic islands, however surely the most ideal when visiting by sailing yacht or catamaran. It is truly worth dropping anchor in "Love bay" and spending a night away from the harbor. Offering you the luxury to wake up in a protected bay, surrounded by beauty and taking a morning dive in crystal clear waters!

“Great family sailing experience in the Saronic gulf”

For our first week-long, family sailing-experience in Greece, we had rented a smaller boat ( Oceanic 37 ) from Yachtsailing.gr. with a skipper. As beginners, we were advised to sail in the Saronic gulf instead of the Cyclades, (which can be very windy), which turned out to be an excellent advice. We had a wonderful experience with the boat, the skipper, Panos, who was an excellent skipper and a very good person for us, and with everything concerning booking and arranging the trip. We would highly recommend this company and this trip for families, and we will surely go again.

Beaches worth visiting

Askeli beach.

Considered one of the most popular beaches but better to be visited if you are anchored in the bay. The reason being the large crowds and cars trying to access the beach. So the best way to enjoy the exceptional waters is privately on your yacht, not having to deal with the crowded seashore.

Russian bay

An excellent option to anchor, sit back and relax. Very well protected from the northern winds with exceptional scenary, loads of beautiful pine trees and beautiful serene waters. A truly picturesque bay with historical significance and interest.

As the name depicts this is a very romantic area with emerald waters sitting below hundreds of pine trees! Definitely one of the best beaches while sailing and looking for a revitalizing dive or swim.

Sites worth visiting

Visit the monastery of zoodochos pigi.

Situated near a small canyon surrounded by trees, only 4km from town is a lovely monestary, which was built in 1720. Probably the most significant religious sights on the island. During the Greek Libereation War of 1821 it was of substantial importance. Providing spiritual assistance to the freedom fighters, as well as social and financial aid. All this is said to have provided the support needed to win the war.

Visit the islet ‘Daskaleio’

There is no way you will miss “Daskaleio” as you sail towards the island of Poros. The small islet located in the center of the sea will mesmerize you with its presence. A small white church is located here and covers almost all the surrounding land which is not touching the sea.

Swim towards this unique location, once anchored right opposite.

Castle of Bourtzi

Built in a stragetic location, covering most of the land on a small islet, this area was used by the locals to supervise the vessels invading Poros from Hydra. Currently, it is only accessible by swimming or boat. So if you are interested, take a quick stop to visit the region.

Local tastes of Poros

Every morning the fishermen of Poros gather in the port to sell their catches from the previous evening. If one of our cooks is present onboard, we encourage asking them to select the type of fish you desire and have it prepared with our own unique recipes. Proving to be a perfect lunch alternative, away from the harbor and relaxing privately in beautiful surroundings.

Citrus fruits

With so many trees and natural scenery everywhere its hard to imagine Poros having a lack of fresh fruit available. Citrous fruits are indigenous to the island and present in juices served by many cafes and restaurants in town. There is also a wide selection of other delicious fruits available to pick from.

  • Average temperatures range from 26 ° C to 32 ° C  during summer
  • Bright and mainly sunny weather
  • Sheltered port on the western side of the island
  • Sheltered but smaller marina on the southern side of the island ‘Perdika’
  • Even when windy, the sea does not produce high waves seeing as it is sheltered by the surrounding  areas
  • Nice anchorages that can protect you from the wind, our captains would be responsible to advise you

This island, that seems like a well kept secret of the Greek seas, is a stop you must absolutely make during your yachting charter expedition!

Its blue and white houses –a trademark of Greek maritime architecture, the delicious cuisine, the history, people, and culture, will hold on to you as you will never forget its classical beauty and charm.

With a yachting charter expedition you can explore the island from every aspect and have the wonderful experience of your Greek summer vacation dreams.

The geomorphology of the island is quite common amongst the Argosaronic, filled with hills where lots pine trees grow. But Poros has a lot of hidden gems scattered across it that will surely amaze you.

Although barely an island from a technical aspect, the houses of Poros are painted white and blue in the likes of those located in the Cyclades while a lot of them are built at the very edge of the waterfront –their door being accessible only by boat if the sea level rises.

While walking at its outer parts you will soon come to realize that boats are anywhere where there is water: in front of taverns, houses, streets, or packed at harbors, the sight is honestly fascinating. But when we pay attention to the island’s natural beauty there is more to be discovered.

The well known classic Greek pebbled beaches that are simply unforgettable, are just the right place to spend your afternoon or evening.

Cost of living

Poros’ marina is located at the south-west side of the island and is the natural border of its picturesque capital.

At the harbor of Poros berthing is usually done by stern-to mooring either at the south or the north-west quay and its right-angled pontoon where caution is needed so as not to cross anchors with nearby boats!

Draught at the north-west quay ranges from 2.5m along the quay to 10m on the outer side of the pontoon. The bed here is muddy and provides generally good holding.

At the south quay of the harbor there is usually a lot of traffic caused by Ferries that mostly come from Piraeus, causing large swells so make sure your fenders are in the right position. Poros’ marina will provide you with a full range of services including water, electricity, port personnel, market and others. Docking costs at the port of Poros are around 8 eur.

A staple value for every Greek island, including Poros, is of course their beaches. Poros’ beaches are absolutely spectacular, filled with treasures that await to be discovered.

Walking along the island’s shores while the sun is going down is a visual that surpasses everyone’s expectations. The clear waters, the colors of the sky at dusk as well as the dense pine trees everytwhere could only make you think you are fantasizing.

It is one of the most beautiful shores on the island and is surrounded by pine trees. The beach is organized around a beach bar but romantic walks across its line makes up for a beautiful and memorable experience on all its own.

But the beauty that Poros exerts comes in different forms. An incredible amount of beaches are filled with people and beach bars that are an absolutely perfect example of what summer is: people are brought together to celebrate and enjoy all that this season can offer them and the fun never stops!

Askeli beach & Panagitsa

One of the busiest of Poros and is filled with sun beds including a beach bar while Panagitsa is organized in almost the same way. They are both perfect for getting some drinks and for having a genuinely fun time with family and friends.

The Russian Bay

On the other hand the beach at the old Russian naval base , located at the Russian Bay , is more secluded and the perfect place to drop anchor and swim under the radar!

Only about 2 nautical miles west from the harbor of Poros , you’ll find the Russian Bay named after the Russian dockyard that was built on its shore after the Russo-Turkish war of 1877.

There, you can drop anchor and perhaps spend a quiet night either by the small isle of Daskalio with its chapel that decorates the entrance of the bay or by the shore, looking at the abandoned Russian naval base and the valley of pines that stretches beyond it!

The Bay of Vydi

Just 3 nautical miles west of the port of Poros you’ll find the beautiful bay of Vydi which offers great protection from northern winds. Drop your anchor there and enjoy the safety that this bay naturally offers while gazing at the beach of Vydi with its eucalyptus trees lined at the shore!

Neorion Bay

Another interesting place to drop anchor in Poros is the Neorion Bay located at the northwest of town. Although more crowded than other anchorages, this bay is also one of the most beautiful with rich verdure growing along the shore. There, you may also pass the time on activities with the water-sports center or enjoying good food at the local taverns.

For a yachting charter expedition the island of Poros is definitely a safe bet. Although busy and in the way of routes starting from Piraeus , at Poros you will have the opportunity to taste the freshest fish, visit magnificent sites, anchor in beautiful bays and swim in the unparalleled beauty of the Mediterranean beaches !

Don’t miss out on stopping by!

Settlements & Places

If you are in the mood for something more than just sailing across the waters of Poros there is a selection of places you can visit in order to get to know the island better.

Attractions

The clocks tower.

A signature sight of the island is the clock tower that is sitting at the very top of a hill and is the perfect place to hike up to and enjoy the unbelievably fantastic view of small boats sailing around the land on its crystal clear waters. Deciding to pack up and visit the clock tower is a well made decision and something anybody visiting Poros should do!

Monastery of Zoodochos Pighi

Located on a hill and overlooking the sea, is the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi . As many would agree the Monastery stands quietly in a charming and inviting way so everyone can appreciate its beauty. The pictures of the saints inside are beautifully hand-painted while the golden chandeliers and candles hanging from the roof are definitely something memorable.

Getting to know the orthodox religion and how the appreciation that Greek islanders are showing towards it is definitely a valuable experience.

Temple of Poseidon

Remnant of the ancient years of Greeks’ faith to the twelve gods of Olympus, the temple of Poseidon at Poros is a great site to visit if you want to get in touch with the ancient Greek culture and admire the imposing temples that ancient Greeks dedicated to their gods.

Walking across its ruins whilst watching the beautiful view will make a very blissful trip for anybody.

In addition

Except for all the historical sites and beaches that Poros offers, the island also has a very vivid out-life with bars, restaurants, taverns etc on almost every corner. The options are truly endless.

Local Delicacies

Fishing in Poros is a very common activity among locals who set out at dawn for their daily haul and later sell it by the docks.

Needless to say you’ll have the chance to taste some of the freshest fish there! Among all the foods that Poros serves here are some of the more traditional and known ones:

  • kalamaraki which is deep fried squid glazed with lemon
  • Saganaki , an appetizer, which is a flat square of feta cheese, fried and the glazed with lemon.
  • Souvlaki which is barbecued meat on a stick and pita gyro which is pita bread filled with meat shavings and various veggies that is then wrapped up in a cone.

In general, Poros is quite the budget friendly place and your wallet will mostly remain undamaged during your time there.

A ride with a taxi costs around 3 euros per kilometer, groceries are about 25 to 30 euros for a lush meal aboard and some essentials or if you prefer a meal at a tavern, it will cost you around 50 euros for two.

If your budget is still too restricted for that then do not fear since two traditional pitas with gyro (infamous worldwide!) and something to drink, cost about 7 euros only.

Greeks are fiercely proud of their heritage and culture. Marvelous regional traditions permeate mainland Greece and the Greek islands, ranging from religion to music, language to food and even wine, making a Greek yacht charter a truly thrilling experience.

Types of Yacht Charters in Greece

Superyacht Irimari underway in Greek waters

Greece has a very diverse yacht charter market, so you can be sure to find the perfect yacht for you and your charter party. There’s a wide variety of motor yachts for charter , as well as sailing yachts and traditional Turkish gulets.

However, be aware that all yachts wishing to begin or end a yacht charter in Greece must be in possession of a valid Greek charter license. Speak to a  yacht charter broker for more information.

If you’re unsure about the type of yacht you’d like to charter, here are some things to consider first.

Motor Yacht Charters in Greece

Charter yacht at anchor in a quiet cove in greece

For those looking to rent a motor yacht  in Greece, you’ll find a wide range to choose from.

The most common type of motor yacht you can hire in Greece is a yacht with a planing hull. Stylish, sporty and speedy, they’re great for zipping between islands quickly and ensuring you get the most out of your itinerary. If you’re looking to spend most of your time on land or splashing in the sea, a yacht with a planing hull is the top choice for you.

You’ll also find a superb selection of displacement and semi-displacement superyachts at your disposal (pictured above). These are typically larger and more stable at anchor, with more onboard space for facilities and amenities such as gyms, movie theaters and wellness suites. They’re ideal if you’re chartering with a large group, particularly one that includes children.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece

Luxury sailing yacht at anchor in Greece with water toys

Greece is a playground for sailing yacht rentals , with plenty of yachts available throughout summer. A combination of light winds, clear skies and plenty of anchorages create great sailing conditions across all the islands.

The most popular destinations for sailing charters are typically Corfu, Kefalonia , and the Sporades Islands . Other destinations are equally desirable, including the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands - but be aware that these areas typically encounter more winds. This means it might be more challenging to drop anchor, and you will have to consider spending more nights in port.

Gulet Yacht Charters in Greece

Gulet yacht at anchor in Greece

A gulet is a traditionally Turkish-built sailing yacht made out of wood. They are usually two or three-masted and are typically much larger than your average sailing yacht.   Luxury gulet yacht charters  in Greece are very appealing alternatives to both sailing and motor yacht charter. While they usually rely on their motor underway, they are very fuel-efficient and don't require a lot of fuel to get from point A to point B. They have displacement hulls which make them very stable and seaworthy, and typically offer lots of volume and open-plan living spaces.

Greek gulet yachts also tend to be cheaper than other types of charter as they sometimes offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and have a lot of expertise and valuable insight into the area.

But be aware- many gulets are Turkish-flagged, meaning they will need to hold a Greek charter license to start or finish a charter in Greece.

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in Greece?

The price of a Greece yacht charter vacation varies depending on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the age of the yacht, and the month in which you choose to charter.

  • A Greece motor yacht rental can range from $33,000 to $1.8m per week plus expenses
  • A sailing yacht charter in Greece averages from $27,200 to $559k weekly plus expenses

In Greece, VAT on a yacht charter is charged at 24% and is based on the value of the yacht. However, this figure can be reduced if the yacht meets specific criteria.

The three tax brackets are as follows;

  • VAT at full 24%: applies to charters that take place in Greek waters without exiting to non-EU or International waters (Staying within the six nautical miles limit)
  • VAT at 24%: with a deduction option for time spent outside of EU waters or in international waters.
  • Discounted at 50% (VAT 12%):for yachts that spend a minimum of 60 % of charter time/days outside of territorial waters. (Territorial waters are considered: six nautical miles from the mainland and six nautical miles from the territorial waters of an island). This also applies to yachts charters commencing outside EU territory and that remain outside for more than 60% of the chartered days and end their charter in Greece.

Greek Charter Licences Explained

When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?

Quiet cove in Greece

The best time for Greek yacht rentals is between July and August, but warm weather typically extends well into September and even May in certain destinations. The peak of the charter season is usually July, although August historically has the hottest temperatures.

Between June and August, you can expect highs of 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit (26 - 32 degrees Celsius) in Athens, with even hotter temperatures recorded further south.

Where Should I Begin My Greece Yacht Charter?

Aerial view of Piraeus, the busiest passenger port in Europe

By far the most common embarkation point for a  Greece yacht rental vacation is Athens . Around 90% of the Greek charter fleet has a homeport in Athens, and there are numerous luxury marinas that cater to superyachts.

However, for those looking to charter around the Ionian Islands in destinations like Corfu , Cephalonia and Zakynthos , you may wish to begin your charter closer to your desired destination.

It is possible to begin or end your charter elsewhere in Greece. However, you may have to consider the cost of repositioning as the fleet is mostly based out of Athens.

If you want to meet the yacht elsewhere – for example, Santorini, Mykonos –  you can expect to pay a hefty repositioning fee. It’s generally more economical to begin your Greek yacht charter in Athens and spend the day cruising to your desired start point, enjoying your yacht to the fullest, and soaking up the scenery as you travel underway.

Where to Find a Yacht Slip in Greece

Exploring secluded coves - luxury yacht charter vacation

Around the main yachting hubs of Greece, you’ll find plenty of marinas that cater to a variety of yachts of different sizes. However, be aware that Greece doesn’t have as many big marinas as destinations such as the South of France or Italy , and demand for slips can be very high in peak season.

  • Zea Marina:  located in Piraeus, Athens, which is the largest seaport in Greece and one of the largest harbors in all of Europe. It's a hive of activity, offering 670 slips up to 150m.
  • Athens Marina : revered marina, accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service.
  • Flisvos Marina: award-winning and perfect for starting and ending a charter. Located 6km from Athens city center, with a 303 slip capacity (up to 70m). Well-equipped facilities and high-end restaurants at your disposal when you dock here.
  • Kos Marina: close to the enchanting island's old harbor, this marina has a capacity for up to 250 slips with a maximum length of 80m. Provides an excellent array of facilities and dining options.
  • Rhodes Marina:  world-class marina complete with a stunning backdrop. Can accommodate a staggering 382 yachts with a maximum length of 120m.

Where to End a Greece Yacht Charter

Beginning or ending your yacht charter in Athens, one of the most exciting cities in the world, is a popular choice. Be sure to explore this historic destination in all its glory before you leave.

How to Book Your Yacht Charter in Greece

Planning your yacht charter with a Broker

Greece is one of the most popular charter destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, advanced booking (three to six months ahead) is absolutely essential in order to secure your dream yacht on your preferred dates in the perfect destination.

When it comes to Greece yacht rentals, many charterers are repeat clients; meaning they’ve already booked the yacht once, fallen in love with the yacht and its crew, and chosen to return again to explore a new destination. This means that competition for yachts is fierce and it’s even more crucial to kickstart the booking process early.

Don’t forget that your choice of yachts in Greece is comparatively smaller than Italy or the South of France since all yachts beginning or ending a charter yacht in Greece must have a Greek charter license.

That said, it is possible for a foreign-flagged yacht to charter in Greece so long as the charter begins and ends in international waters, such as Italy and Albania for yacht charters around the Ionian Islands or Turkey for charters around the Aegean islands.

Greece Yacht Charter Q&A

Most itineraries for yachts around Greece begin in Athens because around 90% of the charter fleet in Greece has a homeport in Athens. Therefore, the yachts are usually based in the country’s capital, and you will most likely have to pay a repositioning fee if you’d like to begin elsewhere in Greece.

A Greek yacht charter license is a special permit that allows yachts to begin and end a yacht charter in Greece. Not all yachts hold a Greek charter license, so you will need to speak to your charter broker for more information about starting and finishing a charter in Greek waters.

You could start a yacht charter in Mykonos, but you will most likely have to pay a hefty repositioning fee as most yachts have their homeport in Athens. To get the most out of your yacht charter, it’s usually best to begin in Athens and spend the night underway to reach Mykonos.

The most popular destinations for sailing vacations in Greece are the Ionian Islands. However, great sailing conditions exist across the country, and other popular hotspots include the Dodecanese Islands, the Sporades Islands and the Saronic Islands.

The standard Value Added Tax (VAT) is 24%, and it is calculated based on the value of the yacht. The VAT can be reduced in certain circumstances; read our guide above.

The Cyclades Islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos are great for exploring on a luxury yacht charter during summer. The best times to visit are between June and September when you can expect long days and warm sea temperatures. The beach clubs of Mykonos will be in full swing, and the island of Santorini will be alive with activity.

Understanding Yacht Chartering

Yacht chartering refers to the practice of renting a yacht for leisure or tourism purposes. It provides individuals with a unique opportunity to experience marine voyages without the financial commitment of owning a yacht. Depending on personal preferences, experience, and budget, one can choose from several types of yacht charters available.

Firstly, a ‘ Bareboat Charter ‘ offers the highest level of independence and is ideal for experienced sailors. It involves chartering the yacht alone, allowing the charterer full control over the vessel, route, and itinerary. It’s akin to a self-drive rental, but on the sea, and it requires the charterer to possess certain sailing competencies.

A ‘ Skippered Charter ‘, on the other hand, includes a professional skipper or captain as part of the charter package. This type is a balance between independence and guidance. The charterer retains control over the itinerary but doesn’t have to worry about maneuvering the yacht or navigating sea routes as the skipper takes on those responsibilities. Generally, hiring a skipper costs about 150-180€ per day , which is a worthwhile investment for those seeking a hassle-free experience. This type of charter suits those with limited sailing experience or those who prefer a more relaxed sailing vacation .

Lastly, a ‘ Crewed Charter ‘ offers the most luxurious yacht charter experience. In addition to a skipper, it includes a full crew comprising cooks, stewards, and other personnel who ensure a worry-free voyage. The crew attends to navigation, cooking, cleaning, and sometimes additional services like guided tours or watersports. This type of charter is perfect for those seeking a luxury holiday or those without any sailing experience .

In the context of Poros, yacht chartering has emerged as a popular activity due to the island’s strategic location. It serves as an excellent base to explore other Saronic islands, such as Hydra and Spetses , or the Peloponnese coast . Moreover, the calm waters of the Saronic Gulf make it a perfect area for novice sailors, while the diverse landscapes offer plenty of exploration opportunities for the more adventurous.

The significance of yacht chartering in Poros extends beyond tourism. It plays a crucial role in the island’s economy and the preservation of its maritime traditions. It contributes to local employment, strengthens the island’s connectivity with other regions, and promotes environmental stewardship through responsible tourism practices.

Whether you’re seeking a high-seas adventure, a serene escape, or a taste of the luxe life, yacht chartering in Poros can deliver an experience tailored to your desires. Understanding the types of charters and what they entail is the first step in planning your dream maritime journey.

Best Time to Charter a Yacht in Poros

One of the essential aspects to consider when planning a yacht charter in Poros is timing. The charm of the Saronic Gulf changes with the seasons, presenting unique experiences at different times of the year.

The sailing season in Greece typically starts in April and lasts till October, with the peak season being July and August. During these months, the weather is sunny and warm, with temperatures ranging between 25 to 35 degrees Celsius . The sea is also warm, perfect for swimming and watersports.

However, July and August can get quite busy, with a surge of tourists flocking to Poros and the surrounding islands. For those who prefer a quieter experience or are on a budget, June and September are excellent alternatives. The weather during these months is still pleasant, with fewer crowds, making it an ideal time to explore the Saronic Gulf at a leisurely pace.

For the more adventurous sailors, spring (April to June) and autumn (September and October) offer a unique charm. The weather during these months is a bit cooler and can be slightly unpredictable, adding an element of adventure to the sailing experience. These are also the best times to witness the rich biodiversity of the Saronic Gulf as many species of marine life are active during these transitional periods.

While winter sailing is less common due to cooler temperatures and rougher seas, it’s not unheard of. For experienced sailors seeking solitude and don’t mind the chill, winter charters can be a rewarding experience.

To sum up, the best time to charter a yacht in Poros largely depends on individual preferences regarding weather, crowd levels, pricing, and the type of sailing experience one seeks. Whether you choose the buzzing energy of the peak summer months or the tranquil charm of the shoulder season, yacht chartering in Poros promises a memorable journey.

Choosing the Right Yacht for Charter

Selecting the right yacht for your charter in Poros is crucial, as it significantly influences the overall experience of your voyage. The choice of yacht depends on several factors, including your budget, sailing skills, the size of your group, the duration of your trip, and your personal preferences for comfort and luxury.

Firstly, consider the type of charter you prefer, as we discussed in the previous section. If you are a seasoned sailor, you might prefer a bareboat charter. If you want some guidance, a skippered charter would suit you better, and for a fully serviced, luxury experience, you can opt for a crewed charter.

Next, determine the size and type of yacht that would best suit your needs. If you are chartering with a small group or a partner, a monohull sailboat might be sufficient. They are perfect for an intimate sailing experience and are relatively easy to handle, making them suitable for less experienced sailors.

For larger groups or families, a catamaran could be the ideal choice. Catamarans offer more space, stability, and comfort than monohull sailboats, with separate living areas, multiple cabins, and a large deck area perfect for lounging or dining.

For those seeking luxury and speed, a motor yacht could be the perfect fit. Motor yachts offer a higher level of comfort, with luxurious cabins, a professional crew, and the ability to cover long distances quickly. However, they also consume more fuel and are generally more expensive to charter.

The duration of your trip and your intended itinerary will also influence your choice. For example, if you plan to explore far-off islands or hidden coves, you might prefer a yacht with a greater range and better seafaring capabilities.

Budget is another critical consideration. Remember that the cost of chartering a yacht goes beyond the rental fee. You also need to account for fuel , provisions , marina fees , and the crew’s tips (for crewed charters). Always ensure to clarify these details with the charter company before finalizing your booking.

Lastly, consider the yacht’s age and condition. Newer yachts often come with modern amenities and are less likely to have technical issues. However, older yachts can have their charm and are usually cheaper to charter.

Poros offers a wide range of yachts for charter, from small sailboats to luxury motor yachts. Whether you’re seeking a budget-friendly option for a quick weekend getaway or a lavish yacht for an extended cruise with all the frills, you’ll likely find a yacht that fits your requirements.

In conclusion, choosing the right yacht is about balancing your desires and practical considerations. By carefully considering your needs, conducting thorough research, and seeking advice from experienced charter companies, you can ensure that your yacht charter experience in Poros is truly unforgettable.

A leisurely sail around Hydra will reveal hidden coves and remote beaches, perfect for swimming or snorkeling.

2. Poros to Spetses (4-5 days)

This itinerary includes a longer sail to Spetses, an island known for its elegant mansions, pine forests, and historical significance in Greece’s fight for independence. Take time to visit the Museum of Bouboulina and the island’s many churches before finding a secluded beach for a picnic lunch.

3. Poros to Epidavros (1 week)

Remember, each of these itineraries can be customized to your preferences. You may choose to spend more time in one location or skip an island altogether based on your interests and the weather conditions. Consider your group’s preferences, your yacht’s capabilities, and local advice when planning your itinerary.

These itineraries offer a mix of relaxation, exploration, culture, and history, allowing you to experience the very best of what the Saronic Gulf has to offer. Whether you’re seeking secluded beaches, vibrant island life, historical sites, or simply the joy of sailing, there’s an itinerary perfect for you. Whichever route you choose, yacht chartering from Poros is guaranteed to provide unforgettable memories and unique experiences.

Safety and Legal Considerations

When planning a yacht charter in Poros , it’s crucial to take into account safety and legal considerations to ensure a smooth and trouble-free experience.

Safety should be your top priority. Ensure that the yacht is equipped with all necessary safety equipment, including life jackets, first aid kits, flares, and fire extinguishers. Check the yacht’s communication and navigation equipment as well, and ensure that they are in working order.

Before embarking on your journey, familiarize yourself with the yacht’s safety procedures and equipment usage. It’s advisable to have a safety briefing for all passengers at the start of the charter. Discuss emergency procedures, the location of safety equipment, and the use of the VHF radio.

Always keep an eye on the weather. Check the weather forecast regularly, and be prepared to adjust your itinerary if needed. Greek waters are generally calm, but weather conditions can change rapidly, especially in the afternoon when winds can pick up.

In terms of legal considerations, ensure that you have the appropriate licenses and qualifications if you’re planning a bareboat charter. Greek authorities require an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or an equivalent national certificate. For skippered or crewed charters, check that your skipper and crew have valid qualifications.

Remember to check visa requirements if you’re a non-EU citizen. Ensure that your passport is valid for the duration of your trip and has enough empty pages for entry and exit stamps.

Always respect marine regulations and practice responsible sailing. This includes avoiding protected marine areas, not anchoring on seagrass beds, and disposing of waste responsibly.

Insurance is another vital consideration. Check that the charter company has adequate insurance covering the yacht, crew, and passengers. It’s also a good idea to have personal travel insurance covering medical emergencies, cancellations, and personal belongings.

In conclusion, while yacht chartering in Poros is generally a safe and straightforward process, it’s important to be prepared. By paying attention to safety measures, adhering to legal requirements, and practicing responsible sailing, you can enjoy a memorable and worry-free yachting experience.

  • Flexible itinerary : While it’s good to have a plan, be prepared to adjust it based on weather conditions or new places of interest you discover along the way.
  • Pack light : Space on a yacht is limited. Pack only essential clothing, toiletries, and personal items. Opt for soft luggage that can be easily stored away.
  • Essentials : Don’t forget items like sunblock, hats, sunglasses, swimsuits, and a good book. Quick-drying towels are a great idea too.

During the Charter

  • Respect the boat : Treat the yacht as you would your own home. Any damage caused by neglect may result in charges from the charter company.
  • Conserve water : Freshwater can be limited on a yacht. Use water sparingly, especially when showering.
  • Provision wisely : Plan meals ahead and shop accordingly to minimize waste. Include snacks for in-between meals.

Sailing Etiquette and Environmental Considerations

  • Respect marine life : Avoid disturbing marine animals and never throw waste or plastic into the sea.
  • Moor responsibly : When mooring, avoid damaging the seabed. Use buoys where available or ensure your anchor lands on sandy ground.

At the End of Your Charter

  • Clean up : Before you return the yacht, tidy up and remove all personal belongings and trash. This can help you avoid any additional cleaning charges from the charter company.

Remember, the key to a successful yacht charter in Poros is planning, respect for the boat and environment, and a spirit of adventure. Following these tips and tricks can ensure a memorable and enjoyable sailing experience.

Chartering a yacht in Poros is more than just a holiday; it’s an unparalleled adventure into the heart of the Greek islands . Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a first-time charterer , the charming island of Poros offers the perfect starting point for a memorable journey. From exploring historical sites and vibrant island communities to lounging on secluded beaches and experiencing world-class Greek cuisine, the experiences are as diverse as they are captivating.

Understanding yacht chartering, choosing the right yacht and charter company, planning your itinerary, ensuring safety, and keeping in mind some useful tips can transform your charter into a hassle-free and truly unforgettable experience. The Saronic Gulf awaits with its endless blue skies, sparkling waters, and warm hospitality.

So, ready the sails and chart a course for an adventure of a lifetime. As you watch the sunset over the Aegean, with the wind in your sails and Poros fading into the horizon, you’ll understand why yacht chartering in this beautiful part of the world is an experience like no other.

Yacht chartering is the practice of renting a yacht for leisurely travel or vacationing. In Poros, it involves selecting a suitable yacht from a charter company based on your preferences and budget. You can opt for a bareboat charter, where you skipper the boat yourself, provided you have the necessary qualifications, or you can go for a skippered or crewed charter, where the crew manages the yacht. You plan your itinerary and sail around the Saronic Gulf, exploring its beautiful islands at your own pace.

The best time to charter a yacht in Poros is typically between April and October, with the peak season being July and August. This period offers excellent weather and sailing conditions. However, the shoulder months of May, June, September, and October can provide a quieter, less crowded sailing experience.

Choosing the right yacht depends on several factors including your budget, number of passengers, level of comfort desired, and your sailing abilities. Consider the type of yacht (monohull, catamaran, motor yacht), the size, the onboard amenities, and the age of the yacht. Discuss your requirements with the charter company, and they will help you select the yacht that best fits your needs.

Some essential yacht charter itineraries from Poros include routes to Hydra, Spetses , Epidavros , and even Athens . These itineraries offer a mix of cultural exploration, historical sites, relaxation, and the joy of sailing.

When chartering a yacht, safety should be a priority. Ensure the yacht is equipped with necessary safety equipment and familiarize yourself with safety procedures. Legally, for bareboat charters, you should have the appropriate licenses and qualifications. Respect marine regulations, practice responsible sailing, and ensure you have the required visas (for non-EU citizens). Also, make sure the charter company has adequate insurance and consider having personal travel insurance.

Plan and book early, keep a flexible itinerary, and pack light, and only the essentials. Respect the boat, conserve water, and provision wisely. Respect marine life and moor responsibly. Clean up at the end of your charter. Remember, a successful yacht charter is about planning, respect, and having a spirit of adventure.

Greece Yacht Charters

Greece is a country in Southeast Europe, which is located in the Balkans. The country is embossed in four seas: the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Cretan Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea . Due to its advantageous location, Greece possesses one of the longest coastlines in the world. This outstanding feature makes the country an incredibly famous sailing destination. Beautiful golden beaches along the island, emerald transparent waters, pine forests in the mountains, and extremely pleasant weather will not leave any sailor indifferent. Deciding to charter a shining yacht, you make an investment in unforgettable memories and the desire to come back as a matter of course.

The reasons for which one must visit Greece are difficult to count as it has a lot to offer for everyone. Rich history, glorious past, impressive ancient buildings, delicious food and wine, an abundance of celebrations and festivals are waiting for you to explore the picturesque region. The pristine nature of Athens, Volos, Corfu, Kavala, and other Greek cities and perfect weather conditions create an ideal opportunity to rent a boat and melt into the pleasure.

Sailing Conditions in Greece

Being situated in Southeast Europe, Greece welcomes sailors from around the globe to feel all the benefits of the Mediterranean climate. Hot and dry summers with rare precipitation and clear skies provide a good opportunity for yacht rental without any fear of possible rains and extreme winds. The average temperature during the summer period never drops below 20 ºC even at night. It is impossible to miss such great weather and not to go far in the sea on your sailboat to enjoy the 30 ºC heat in the daytime. Greek winters are usually colder, especially in those areas that are close to mountains. But they are not lingering and not so cold to somehow disturb dedicated sailors. The sailing season usually starts in March and continues up to November, bringing different sailing conditions to the island.

Best Times for Vacation in Greece

Having an intention to make the most of your sailboat vacation in the breathtaking destination, it is necessary to get acquainted with the weather conditions of the desired period. As a rule, the peak season of sailing occurs in the summer months and up to the end of September . This time features extremely high air and water temperature and a huge number of sailors even in the remote marinas. By the way, Greek summers are an ideal time for those who are ready to forget about sleep and party the whole night. One of the most important things to consider is that in July, the northern wind Meltemi comes to the shore and creates many hazardous obstacles for sailing.

Spring and autumn wind speeds and summer conditions force you to choose this time period if you are looking for peace and quiet. There is no extreme heat and strong winds, as well as no abundance of people. You still can enjoy going bareboat without any unpleasant conditions and immerse yourself into the same active and loud festivals and celebrations.

Sailing Difficulty Level

Greece has already gained its high popularity as one of the world’s best sailing destinations . Because of its climate and location, the country represents great sailing options for beginners and professional sailors alike. The weather changes require sailors to explore the weather forecast beforehand to select the desired time for coming and know what to expect. The level of difficulty is mostly predetermined by the Meltemi wind of 6-8 force. Blowing from July to September may scary fresh sailors and even become a challenge for experienced professionals. If you are not highly skillful and just do not have enough confidence to manage the vessel by yourself, consider booking a boat in spring or autumn. The absence of powerful winds will not spoil your first sailing experience but contribute to positive impressions.

If you are still not ready to face the open water, 12 Knots is glad to provide you with the help of a qualified skipper and an opportunity to hire a crew . Being focused on the needs and desires of every sailor, we offer either a skipper to help to refresh the memories of handling a boat or a complete training process in our sailing school. Both options are delivered at their best quality and reasonable price.

Main Charter Bases

Greece is an incredibly important sailing destination for 12 Knots. Welcoming thousands of happy sailors every year, the country has a lot of well-equipped marinas and good mooring options. Depending on the desired part of the country, preferred city, and climate peculiarities, you may select a perfect one. The team of 12 Knots spreads their professional services on more than 30 bases along the coast. You may rent a yacht or boat at bases situated in the most famous Greek cities and islands:

  • Santorini  and many others

Boat Types for Charters

Having a great number of bases in possession, 12 Knots aims to provide sailors with powerful sailboats from leading manufacturers. Approximately 6,000 vessels are now available for charter in Greece. Sailing yachts, catamarans, powerboats, gulets, and houseboats are waiting for your booking. Do not hesitate and contact our team to become an owner of a white shining boat at a good cost. It is advisable to perform booking beforehand to avoid disappointment and misunderstanding.

Other Information about Greece Sailing

Before diving into the images of future perfect sailing vacations, every sailor should be aware of some essential information about the intended place.

  • Greece is the Euro zone; that’s why the official currency is Euro.
