Dos And Don’ts Of Yacht Interior Refinishing

If you have an older yacht, or you’re interested in sprucing up your recent purchase, you may be thinking about refinishing the interior. That’s a great idea – restoring the interior of a yacht is a great way to make it a more comfortable environment, and could even increase its value, in some cases.

However, interior yacht refinishing is not simple, even if you are working with a professional marine carpentry services provider like Chi Yacht Refinishing. Here are our top “Dos” and “Don’ts” for yacht interior refinishing.

When Refinishing Your Yacht, DO:

  • Shop around different yacht refinishing companies – A yacht renovation and refinishing is an expensive project, and it will take some time. To make sure you choose the right company for your project, you should do some shopping around at different service providers.
  • Get a written statement of work, and a quote – After talking with a yacht interior refinishing service provider, ask if you can get a solid quote and statement of work that will be performed. This will help you determine how much you should be spending on your yacht, and is a helpful negotiating tool if you are interviewing multiple service providers.
  • Ask for photos of past projects and results – This is incredibly important. A yacht refinishing company should be willing to provide you with information about past projects, including cost, timeframes, photos, and even referrals from the customer.
  • Consult with an expert marine interior designer – Marine interiors are all about space efficiency, and have a variety of special considerations that must be taken into account. If you consult with a designer, you can create a comprehensive renovation plan that’s ideal for the size, shape, and style of your yacht.

When Refinishing Your Yacht, DON’T:

  • “Over-customize” your yacht – It may be tempting to custom-tailor everything in your yacht to your particular needs. However, this is not a good idea. If you choose options and features that are not popular with other boat owners, you may reduce the value of your boat – and have a hard time selling it if you ever decide to upgrade.
  • Skimp on material quality – The cost of renovating your yacht’s interior is very high, so we understand the urge to save money by choosing cheaper materials. However, this is a mistake. If you invest in high quality materials, your yacht will be beautiful for decades to come. Cut-rate materials, though, may begin to fail or become unsightly after just a few years.

Follow These Tips – And Restore Your Yacht’s Interior Like A Pro!

Yacht refinishing is not cheap, and the process is very complex. But it’s worth it – especially if you take this advice to restore your yacht’s interior! If you’re interested in interior yacht refinishing in Fort Lauderdale, get in touch with Chi Yacht Refinishing right away.

We employ only the best marine specialists – from marine carpenters, to tiling experts, designers, and more. Learn more on our website !

A Practical Approach to Cabin Sole Finish

You don't have to sacrifice beauty for safety belowdeck..

ultimate yacht refinishing

The challenge with finishing a veneer-and-plywood sole is finding a product that offers long-lasting protection for the wood and gives a secure footing when the cabin sole is wet. Varnishes suitable for protection and durability do not have intrinsically good nonskid characteristics.

Faced with this dilemma, we recommend using a satin-finish, one-part polyurethane varnish to protect the thin veneer and plywood, and adding some nonskid aggregate to the final coats to reduce the slippery-when-wet effect. If you don’t want to use the aggregate on the whole sole, at least add it in when finishing the areas at the base of the companionway and outside the head, where a sole is most likely to get wet.

For brush-on applications, PS editors have had good luck with Interlux’s polyurethane Goldspar Satin, Pettit’s Z-Spar Captains 2067 (clear) or 1015 (amber), and Epifanes High Gloss. The products also have scored well in past Practical Sailor varnish tests for weathering outdoors, so they should have an even longer life in a cabin.

Wood-finish makers echoed our recommendations, and advised that if you opt to go with a high-gloss varnish like the Epifanes High Gloss or Interlux Schooner , be sure to use a flattening agent with it, or, in the case of Epifanes, replace the two final coats with the company’s Rubbed Effect Interior Varnish . Having a satin or matte finish helps to minimize slipping.

According to Interlux, Cetol products can be used on soles, but in our opinion, the relatively soft coatings will not offer enough protection for veneer, and given the amount of traffic a cabin sole sees, they would not wear well.

For aggregate options, you have a few choices. We recommend using salt or crushed walnut shell powder with varnish, rather than the canned aggregate sold by marine paint makers and often used with deck paints. Others prefer pumice or finely ground sand. Both the walnut shell and salt methods are easy to touch up and re-apply.

You can find ground walnut shell powder at larger boat yards, paint supply companies, and Harbor Freight. To use it: After building up a uniform series of base coats (usually six to eight coats, with the first ones thinned some) and letting it cure, place strips of -inch masking tape over the centerline of the -inch holly strips, and then mix the powder in the final coat of varnish. This results in nonskid stripes that are near in color to the teak, with enough of the sole left glossy to add a warm feel to the cabin. If you plan to add this or any other nonskid material to a finish, be sure to run it by the varnish companys technical crew before applying it.

Adding salt to a varnish finish is a little different. First, build up a good protective base, and allow it to cure completely. Then, mask off the areas to be made nonskid, and lay on a heavy coat of the same finish. Heavily sprinkle it with coarse salt; we use a grinder held 2 to 3 feet above the surface. Start with a light coat, moving back and forth until a uniform coating is obtained. Once the coating dries, rinse away the salt crystals with fresh water. Because its water-soluble, the salt disappears, leaving a surface stippled with tiny indentation where the crystals once were. This offers traction without taking away from the finish.

If you have the luxury of applying the finish with the sole out of the boat, take the opportunity to build up a very good base for protection. The more coats you put on, the better the protection. Also, do a few test patches on scrap veneer with salt and with walnut powder to see which you prefer aesthetically.

Cabin soles are a challenge to re-do. Do a maintenance coat once every year or two to get longer life out of the finish and hopefully avoid a full takedown for many years.

I’m planning to replace the weathered teak and holly sole with a new one very soon. My approach will be to coat both sides and all edges with West System epoxy followed by three coats of varnish on the sole’s top. Any comments?

Whaf, no mention of Awlwood?

At our boatyard, we use Smith’s Clear Penetrating Epoxy as an initial sealer coat on the substrate before adding any type of finish varnish product. This stuff soaks into the wood, adding a layer of protection and when lightly sanded, allows for excellent adhesion to any of the aforementioned varnishes.

Nice job Son, can’t wait to see the finished shop.

Whatever is used; I still find it cracks. A boat moves

I have a worn sole that I am thinking of refinishing it. Are there any articles I can source from previous installments of Practical Sailor?

New Website Launched: Ultimate Yacht Refinishing

This month LMD launched a brand new website for France based company – Ultimate Yacht Refinishing.

Our client said “it’s got to look, trick” so that was what we set about doing.

The Previous Website

Homepage - previous UYR site

The previous website fulfilled a need, and did it fine for a while. A stock homepage, a services page, a gallery page and a simple contact page. The guys at Ultimate Yacht Refinishing (UYR) however knew that they needed something better, something more 21st century and something…’trick’.

We teamed up with local company DigitalMOP , who knew this client, the area and market all very well. Over a series of on-site meetings with Nigel from DigitalMOP , our own John from LMD and the guys from UYR, we established the key needs and goals the new website would need to uphold. The aim for the new site was to leverage some good stuff from the old site and add plenty of new features and best practice web development to make something on brand, high quality and future proof. The guys were also interested in reshaping their offerings and promote certain services that most potential customers and clients didn’t know UYR even did.

During the meetings we scamped up what the pages could end up looking like, taking all this into consideration. By the end of our initial visit we had a great idea of what to turn paper into webpages with, and a happy client feeling assured that his then web worries would soon be a distant past.

The New Website

Ultimate Yacht Refinishing - About page full length

  • Text effect on the hero image: with the help of the Fullwidth Header Extended plugin , we managed to create a nice effect to ease in the text on the hero image. This effect is found on most of the website pages.
  • Jump-to button: a nice little touch was to add this simple button which allows people to jump with a short transition to the next section. In turn, this triggers the Andy and Dirk images to transition in from the left and from the right respectively.
  • Social media bar: this is found on several pages and pushes the emphasis on the social media importance to this client. The guys at UYR are social media fans and post a lot of content up on their channels – why not take a look yourself.
  • Andy and Dirk images hover effects: with the help of the Image Intense plugin , we were able to add a nice hover effect on each of these images. Hovering shows what each of the specialisms the guys have; a nice clean way of showing content on request.
  • Counters for stats bar: this is a nice way to display key statistics to visitors. The feature counts the relevant stat upwards from zero over a few seconds to reveal the final number.
  • Full width slider: UYR’s clients include some of the most beautiful yachts this world has to offer. So we decided the best way to show just a little insight into their grandeur was to put each craft into it’s own full width slider and allow people the option to use the slider’s navigation arrows to move back and forth between them. Upon load, the key stat for each craft is shown, emerging softly from below. To finish things off, we added some true parallax for a great effect when scrolling down to the next section.
  • Facilities hover effects: like with Andy and Dirk hover effects above, we used the Image Intense to add a nice hover effect on each of these images. The effect is different on these just to mix things up a bit for the visitor, yet keeping an air of consistency with it. For the finishing touch, we added an array of slide-in effects to make things even more interesting for site visitors.
  • Values blurbs: just a simple load effect decision was taken here, as the values section is a little more serious and did not require undue distractions for the visitor.
  • Andy and Dirk contact pods: it was vital for potential clients to have a mechanism to be able to get in touch with the right UYR contact straight away, and to put a face to a role. This is why we added contact pods on almost all website pages, and gave visitors multiple ways to get in touch that would match their given preference. We added click-to-email and click-to-call, and a personal contact form for each of the guys.
  • CAPTCHA security: although it is vital for UYR to receive form based enquiries, we didn’t want to allow for spam or even just simple mistaken form content to get sent through; these guys don’t want to be bothered with this sort of thing. Adding a CAPTCHA feature minimises this risk and keeps the enquires that do come through as genuine.
  • Partners bar: we added a slim bar on every page to house UYR’s partners logos. They are quite discrete being grey-scale, until hovered over when they become slightly larger and in colour. Upon click, a visitor is taken to the partner website. This is a nice way to allow visitors the chance to find our more about how the magic at UYR is done.
  • Social media icons: further to adding the Jump-to button’s above, we added the social channels in the footer of every page too.

Want to see this page for yourself?

Because of LMD and DigitalMOP we now have a website to be truly proud of. Well done guys and thanks for the time and effort that you have put in to date.

Ultimate Yacht Refinishing

So there we have it. Another satisfied client who we intend to work with for many years to come on web and social matters.

Perhaps you have a similar problem with your business website; needs a makeover, doesn’t promote the right services anymore, and doesn’t do your good establish reputation any justice. Well, perhaps we can help you.

Why not contact us today for a quick chat about your needs and goals. In the meantime take a look for yourself at UYR’s new website to see if they have a service you are interested in.
