Luxury Mega Yacht TOPAZ

Launched in 2012, TOPAZ (147.25m, 483ft) is a custom-built luxury motor yacht constructed by Lürssen in Bremen, Germany, estimated to have cost £400 million to build – around US$527 million.

Topaz

TOPAZ is among the largest private luxury yachts in the world and is owned by billionaire Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and member of the Abu Dhabi Royal Family. He is also owner of the Manchester City football club.

TOPAZ has been designed to accommodate up to 62 guests in 26 cabins. She is also capable of carrying up to 79 crew.

The Tim Heywood-designed vessel features a steel displacement hull, an aluminium superstructure and consists of eight decks. The eight decks are connected by a lift that provides access to the helicopter and swimming platforms, and to a fully equipped gym with the latest in sports technology. It is equipped a swimming pool, two Jacuzzis, a conference room, movie theatre and two helipads.

TOPAZ boasts tender boats that can be reached from both sides of the ship, or through the stern, where there is a terrace and a large deck with stairs to provide access to the water as well as a variety of water toys stored in the hold: jet skis, inflatable boats, catamaran and a mini-submarine.

TOPAZ'S cruising speed is 22.9 knots and the maximum speed is estimated to be around 25.5 knots. The megayacht also has stabilizers to ensure comfort on board when the yacht at anchor, particularly in rough water.

Its manufacturers and designers have not disclosed details of its interior, given it's owned by a member of the Royal Family, however, it is known that Disdale was briefed to create an informal "beach house" style of décor.

Is the newly launched J Class yacht Topaz the fastest yet?

Holland Jachtbouw (HJB) has launched J8 , now named Topaz . The latest J Class yacht has been hotly anticipated and now brings the J Class Association fleet to a total of eight yachts on the water.

Known as Project J8 while in build, the 42.62 metre J Class yacht Topaz was launched from HJB’s shipyard in Zaandam, The Netherlands.

Designed inside and out by Andre Hoek , Topaz ’s hull design features a reduced wetted surface and higher keel aspect ratio to the longest waterline found on J Class yacht measuring nearly 27 metres. As a long waterline length is often tied to swifter performance, this raises the question: will the newly launched J Class yacht Topaz be the fastest in the J Class fleet?

She will be put to the test in the coming days as she undergoes sea trials and commissioning, overseen by project managers from HJB, Cornelsen and Partners and the Hoek Design office.

How she stacks up compared to the rest of the Js will only be discovered in J Class events in the years to come. Getting the chance to compete against other J Class yachts in an elite fleet is just one of the many reasons to buy a J Class yacht .

While it was the new owners and crew of Svea that took first blood, winning the first J Class race of the 2022 Superyacht Cup Palma today, it is Topaz which are the early overall leaders. Although they conceded the first race lead to Svea – the Swedish flagged team which has Bouwe Bekking as tactician – Topaz finished second after sailing a clean, tidy race. They then won the second race by a slender 30 seconds to lead the four-day long Bay of Palma showcase regatta by two points.

topaz sailing yacht owner

The first of the two windward leeward races were contested in a streaky 6-8kts of SW’ly breeze and smart starting and using the best wind pressure seemed key. Ranger claimed the pin end of the start line but were over early and had to recross. Topaz then held the key left side of the first beat and were able to lead Svea round the mark. On the downwind Topaz gybed off early and Svea took the lead to cross the finish line first, giving the new Swedish owners a pleasant, rewarding induction to the J Class.

And while the Svea core crew may not be exactly rookies, neither to grand prix sailing nor the J Class, a victory on their maiden race outing together was a fitting reward for the new owners and all the hard work that the crew have put in since the boat arrived from the USA and this last week of hard training drills with the exacting Bekking setting a high standard. “We are very happy, the owners are happy. It is a good day’s sailing with some good crew work,”  Bekking smiled. “ We are being very conservative, staying away and not fighting for the pin for example, trying to make easy approaches always on starboard. The whole thing for us in this event is sail clean and just get around the course. We did not ever set ourselves up to get into a situation. I think we have good pace and for the little bit of sailing we have done I think we are up to par with manoeuvres maybe even better than some it is all very promising.”

With the sea breeze building into double figures, Topaz then got the best timed, best positioned start on the second race. Ranger’s safer, more conservative choice starting in clear air at the boat end of the line – allowed them to jump out just ahead of Svea which at the same time had Topaz squeezing from below.

Velsheda, nearest the pin, were then able to work the left side, which yielded the expected early dividend. But while they ran out first across the finish line they dropped to second on corrected time to Topaz. Highlighting just how close the racing is, Velsheda in second were ten seconds up on Ranger on corrected time who in turn were ten seconds up on Svea which recorded first and fourth for the days races.

The first race may have gone to the ‘newcomers’ but the day belongs to Topaz, the team which chose not to race at March’s Saint Barth’s Bucket. Helm Peter Holmberg admitted to some nervousness not having lined up against the other Js for some time.

“We are really happy, naturally we are. But it could have been anyone’s day out there today. It was that close ,” said Holmberg. “ It is a complicated place to race but we got good starts. I give credit to Nacho Postigo (navigator) and Mike on the bow and the three of us talking together works for the starts. And Francesco de Angelis (tactician) and Nacho did a really nice job playing the bay.” Holmberg observes how close the fleet is. “ There is not much to give, the boats are all so close you can’t give anything away. My job today was getting the starts we wanted and then learning our boatspeed and our modes, that is the first time we have lined up with anyone for a while. We have some new headsails and they are a different shape with a new control system with some grunt. We are competitive upwind and downwind but in this pack if we did not get off the line like we did then I am not sure we would have been able to get back into them.”

The J Class continue to race as a stand-alone fleet over the next three days but follow a schedule of coastal courses on the Bay of Palma, a very different challenge to the contained action on the windward-leeward tracks of today.

About Topaz

After the success of Rainbow (2012), we were delighted to build another J Class sailing yacht. Topaz (previously called J8 ) was built based on the designs of Frank Cabot Paine. Paine (1890-1952) was born in Boston, as the son of three times defending challenger of the America’s Cup. Besides designing several impressive, large sailing yachts, he became well known by designing certain sailing yachts for a specific class. These were sailing yachts suitable for competitive racing in the J Class (23-26.5 metres) of the first regattas of the America’s Cup in the 1930s.

Even though the spectacular Topaz had been brought to life on paper as early as 1935, it was not until many years later that she was actually developed by the renowned architectural firm Hoek Design Naval Architects and delivered to her owner. Topaz was designed to sail as Super J in the America’s Cup and though she was built for competitive racing, she simultaneously offers all onboard facilities for comfortably cruising at its best. Hoek Design did an extensive research project, which showed that the hull lines of Topaz (J8) were very fast. The Topaz design had the lowest wet surface of all tested models and the highest keel aspect ratio of all J Class boats. After the research project, Topaz’s design was optimized to make her suitable for racing under the J Class Association handicap system. The mast position, stability, sail area and hull stiffness were also extensively researched and improved.

The aluminium hull was manufactured by Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw, who had built hulls for other J Class boats ( Lionheart and Rainbow ) as well. Special systems were integrated in the initial phase of construction and both weight and volume had to be kept to a minimum. In addition, Topaz is equipped with a hybrid drive system: one of the most advanced systems built to date. Her deck systems were designed for maximum efficiency, while also allowing Topaz to race with a smaller crew.

Topaz is one of the most beautiful sailing yachts that you have ever seen. But don’t let that fool you: above all, she’s a true racer, packed with engineering ingenuity to deliver the best possible racing performance.

The design has a double cockpit and double deckhouse layout, with the helm position in the middle of the boat, just in front of the aft deckhouse. During racing, the aft cockpit is the runner cockpit, the center cockpit serves as sail storage and the helm is located in the middle of the boat, between the aft deck house and the main cockpit. The primary and mainsheet winches are located close to the helmsman, providing short communication lines and facilitating trimming and steering without the use of headsets.

topaz sailing yacht owner

Completely in line with the spirit of the time in which the J Class sailing yachts were originally built, Topaz also features an Art Deco interior (designed by Hoek Design Naval Architects & Rhoades Young Design).

Topaz’s layout has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to eight sleeping guests in four cabins, including a master cabin and two twin cabins. She is also able to accommodate up to seven crew members on board to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience for her guests.

Topaz features a displacement aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. She was built to Lloyds Register classification society rules, and is MCA compliant.

Above all, she’s a true racer, packed with engineering ingenuity to deliver the best possible racing performance.

By Editorial Team   30 May 2014

Superyacht fan and A-List superstar Leonardo DiCaprio was one of a lucky few people in the world allowed to charter the 147m/482 TOPAZ in which he hosted a lavish party on board last month.

As reported on the New York Daily News website, the 80’s-themed party which is thought to have been held in New York in mid-April with around 100 guests welcomed aboard including actor’s Jamie Foxx and Orlando Bloom.

A crew of more than 80 are said to have been on-hand to serve an undoubtedly impressive spread of fine food, champagne and cocktails whilst the VIP part-goers were entertained into the early hours. ‘Leo wore a velour pantsuit to the ’80s-themed party’, said one insider, adding that DiCaprio hired additional ‘deejays, decor, designers and extra security’ especially for the event.

The 2012-launched superyacht TOPAZ was built by Lürssen to a design by Tim Heywood and is currently ranked 5th amongst the largest superyachts in the world. A spectacular setting for any event, she has very occasionally been made available for rent by her UAE-based Owner to a hand-selected elite few but is not officially available on the global charter fleet.

DiCaprio is no stranger to superyachts, having shot a number of scenes for ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ on board the 44m/144’ MY LADY M and is regularly seen enjoying time on board charter yachts during prestigious events such as the Cannes Film Festival .

The largest superyacht officially marketed for charter is SERENE , the 133m Italian motor yacht built by Fincantieri, she can accommodate 24 charter guests in her 12 sumptuous staterooms.  Charter rates are from €3,750,000 per week plus expenses.

World’s coolest yacht: J Class Topaz

  • Elaine Bunting
  • February 3, 2022

We ask top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times. Former world No 1 match racer Pete Holmberg nominates J Class Topaz.

topaz sailing yacht owner

“I’ve climbed a lot of mountains so choosing the coolest is a tough one, but it has to be the J Class Topaz . I love what we are able to do, to bring it back and sail to a high level, combining history with modern technology.

“Figuring out how to manoeuvre this thing properly, accurately, and do it right, is the ultimate challenge. But we put it right in there; when we’re racing, we’re metres apart in these big things.”

Holmberg is the racing helmsman on Topaz, J8, one of the most recent of the J Class yachts. She was built to a Frank Paine design from 1935, optimised by Hoek Design, and launched in 2015. Under Holmberg and her race crew, performance and results have steadily been improving. She won over Velsheda at the Superyacht Cup in June.

Holmberg says the addictive thing about the Js is that they are a challenge to handle, being slow to respond and with a race crew of over 30, and they will punish any mistake.

Learn About Leonard DiCaprio's Yacht: Topaz

When you think about Leonardo DiCaprio, images of an eco-conscious crusader who is out to improve the health of the planet may first emerge. Recent rumors that Leo plans to attend the 2018 World Cup events in Brazil aboard a yacht seem a bit contradictory because of the pollution that these floating luxury hotels churn into the air and water.

While some have criticized him for indulging in a bit of heaven at the expense of the planet, if he wasn't doing it, somebody else would be. At least he's making an attempt to help the situation when he can. All of that aside, we were curious to find out more about Leonardo DiCaprio's Yacht, and here is what we discovered.

Leo doesn't own the yacht

DiCaprio hasn't actually purchased a yacht. Instead, he rented it from owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Mansour is a billionaire politician who is the current prime minister of the United Arab Emirates.

The mega yacht was custom built according to his grand and luxurious specifications and named the Topaz. Until recently, the interior of the yacht has remained a well-guarded secret. We've learned some juicy tidbits that we're happy to share.

Specifications of the Topaz

The super yacht measures a total of 453 feet in length with a cost of more than $200 million in USD to build and an estimated value of $678 million. This isn't the biggest yacht that Mr. DiCaprio has chartered, but it's likely to be one of the most luxurious.

The yacht is powered by four M90 diesel engines which generate approximately 48,000 horse power. The ship made its maiden launch in 2012 and according to sources, DiCaprio also rented it in 2014 just 2 years into its service run.

The Topaz is rumored to be one of the most extravagant yachts in the world . It offers smooth sailing with the installation of zero speed stabilizers. It comes fully outfitted with lifts that ferry guests comfortably among the eight deck levels to the host of amenities that are scattered throughout the massive vessel.

It is decked out in full luxury and comfort with a cinema, two hot tubs, air conditioning throughout, three swimming pools, a fitness hall, underwater lights, an ample sized conference room and a well hidden interior design that is left up to our imaginations.

Leonardo DiCaprio's guest list aboard the Topaz

Leo won't be making the trip alone. We've learned that he has a list of guests that will accompany him on thee yacht as he enjoys the football tournament in Brazil.

There were 21 of his friends, all of millionaire status mind you, invited to enjoy the amenities. It's been reported that DiCaprio and his pals hopped a jet and flew to Rio de Janeiro to arrive one day prior to kick off of the Brazil World cup.

The controversy the rental has stirred

While some are happy that Leo had a nice luxury vacation , others are upset about the seeming nose thumb to environmentalists who think his actions are careless.

There has been a degree of judgment and sentiments of disappointment to outright damnation sent his way. Activists point out that Leo's private jet that made thee 8000 mile trip left a hefty carbon footprint. This is besides the emissions put out from the luxury mega yacht. They're citing his actions as not being environmentally responsible.

Why the uproar?

The backlash has come after the fact that DiCaprio made a plea to viewers to work with one another to help fight climate change when he accepted his first ever Oscar award. DiCaprio's involvement in Hollywood environmentalism can't be denied.

He dedicates time to fly here and there to pick up awards for his contributions to help clean up the environment, but when he flies to and fro, his carbon footprint grows.

There has been a volley of insults and comments disapproving of Leo's actions, but isn't this how Hollywood environmentalism works? It's kinda tough to get to Brazil without flying or chartering a boat to take you there.

It's a drama that has been ongoing since Leo's plans were first revealed but it seems that he could at least score a few points for encouraging us all to make some kind of effort.

It's not easy being the center of attention and there are times when best intentions draw a backlash of negativism, despite the fact that most of us rely on some type of carbon emitting transportation resources.

Topaz is derived from an original Frank C Paine design and was launched in June 2015. Paine is known as the designer of JH3 Yankee which was ultimately beaten in the defender trials by the mighty Ranger by one single second, but went on to twice defeat Ranger in subsequent races.

After extensive research and testing, Hoek Design drew the lines for Topaz from an unbuilt 1935 Paine boat which was designed to take on the Super Js using the maximum waterline length at 88ft, one foot longer than any other J of the time. Paine’s design preference, under the rule, was to accept slightly less sail area in order to maximise waterline length.

On Topaz, Hoek aligned this with a high aspect – narrower and deeper – keel and low wetted surface area. This produced a hull which is fast in light airs and downwind.

Mast position, stability and sail areas were optimised to the J Class Association handicap system and the hull structure designed to accept maximum running backstay loads. Topaz is unique among the modern replica Js having a low bulwark around the deck edge which adds extra stiffness. And Topaz, Lionheart and Svea are all built with longitudinal framing which maximises fore and aft stiffness.

Besides being azure blue underwater, Topaz is recognisable in having a double cockpit, double deckhouse layout. The helm position is in front of the aft deckhouse and behind the main cockpit. This means all the key positions are relatively close to each other, and the primary winches as well as the mainsheet winches are close to the helm.

Topaz’s core crew have been together pretty much since the boat was launched. America’s Cup winner and Olympic silver medallist Peter Holmberg steers Topaz with Nacho Postigo as navigator and Italian Louis Vuitton Cup winner Francesco de Angelis is tactician . Germany’s renowned round the world and America’s Cup sailor Timmy Kroger is project manager.

Topaz in currently in Camden Harbor.  The current owners have been cruising her for 19 years and have come to the difficult decision to put her up for sale.  Having just recently raced her for the first time ever in the Camden Classics Cup, they were reminded how great of a sailing boat Topaz is and how easy it is to sail.

The center cockpit deck allows for aft and fore state rooms making her a very appealing sailboat for cruisers who regularly have guests.  The classic Robert Perry design built at the well regarded Ta Shing Yacht Building Co. is known for a safe and comfortable blue water sailor, as well as an easy and functional cruiser.

Specifications

  • displacement 28,000lbs
  • fuel capacity 2 X 80 gallons
  • water capacity 2 x 120 gallons
  • type Centercockpit
  • designed by Robert Perry
  • builder Ta Shing Yacht Builder
  • model Norseman 447
  • hull material Fiberglass
  • location Camden, Maine
  • boat engine Lehman Power 4D61
  • horsepower 61 HP

Construction

Norseman 447 hulls are single piece layups built in a female mold.  The monolithic form provides the greatest strength and integrity.  Orthophthalic resins are used throughout.  Knytex cloth is used in the outer layer of layup followed by alternating layers of mat and roving. The hull is cored with Airex foam followed by the inner laminate identical to the outer laminate.

The deck is composed of a single piece layup.  All hatches, portholes and windows are built into the mold.  The outer skin is composed of  a layer of orthophthalic polyester gelcoat, backed with alternate layers of fiberglass and mat in a matrix of orthophthalic polyester resin to an average thickness of 5/16″. Bonded to the out skin is a layer of end grain balsa core, averaging 3/4″ thickness.  The inner skin is built up in the same manner as the outer skin, using othophthalic polyester resin, without the use of any gelcoat layer.  It maintains an average thickness of 1/4′

Hull to Deck Joint:

The hull to deck joint is bonded with 3M 5200 as bedding and fastened with 1/4″- 20 bolts every few inches.  The teak toe rail is thrubolted adding additional mechanical fastening.

The teak decks are not structural.  They are glued and fastened to the outer fiberglass layer.  Two-part polysulfide compounds are used as the bedding between planks.

Bulkheads are constructed of marine plywood laminated into place by layers of mat and glass to provide structural rigidity and strength.  Where bulkheads meet the hull and deck a layer of Airex foam is laid in to prevent print thru of the bulkhead and to allow for some compression.  Mares tales fiberglass rope strands add extra strength in the layup of these joints

Chain plates:

Where chain plates pass through the deck, the Airex foam core has been eliminated.  A hole is cut through the deck which has slightly larger cross section that the chain plate.  This space is filled with 3M 5200 after insertion of the chain plate. On deck, a cover plate is screwed down to the deck, spreading the bedding compound for a good watertight bond.

Inside the boat, large anchoring ribs are laminated to the hull and deck in the same manner as the bulkhead.  The chain plates are attached to these ribs by thru-bolting 1/2″ stainless steel bolts through the chain plate and rib with large stainless steel backing plates opposite the chain plate and rib.  All chain plates are bonded to prevent electrolysis and provide some lightning protection.

Topaz has an Awlgrip blue paint job with a double red boot strip and a wide upper red cove stripe with a smaller gold cover strip underneath.  The transom is fitted with two opening ports, while port and starboard have three opening ports each.

Topaz has a center cockpit lay out.  She has a teak with a varnished teak toe rail and stainless steel stanchions mounted on deck with stainless steel wire life lines. Nice aft space for a couple chairs and equipped with Simpson Davits.

There are three scuppers on port and starboard mid ship. At the bow, stern and mid ship there are port and starboard chalks built in to the rail with accompanying cast aluminum cleats.

The bow has a double anchor roller mounted with an electric windlass

Additionally, the deck is fitted with two deck prisms on port and two on starboard.

Topaz has an Forespar one piece aluminum keel stepped mast.  It is a two spreader mast head sail design. Set up with lazy jacks for the main and back stay.  Roller furlering jib.

Kamaz FTL hauler registers NatCar brand

topaz sailing yacht owner

MOSCOW. Sept 4 (Interfax) - National Carrier JSC, the full truckload freight trucking company headed by former Globaltruck CEO Ilya Sattarov that Russian truck maker Kamaz founded this summer, applied to register the brand NatCar at the end of August, the registry of federal intellectual property service Rospatent showed.

The NatCar brand is also mentioned in the recruitment ads of National Carrier, which is actively looking for E-class drivers. It is offering working with this year's model Kamaz diesel trucks from the flagship K5 line and new dry goods (curtainsider) and refrigerated trailers.

National Carrier was founded on July 7 in Moscow with charter capital of 1 billion rubles, the Unified State Register of Legal Entities showed. The company registered two branches in early August, in Yekaterinburg and Elektrostal, Moscow Region. The company specializes in truck logistics and associated activities, including digitization processes.

A spokesman for National Carrier told Interfax earlier that the company plans to provide FTL trucking services using its own fleet, "as well as the resources of hired truckers." The company's fleet will initially consist of 400 semi-trailer trucks with a 50/50 ratio of curtainside to refrigerated trailers, and it plans to primarily operate on domestic routes, he said.

The company has preliminary agreements with major customers among marketplaces and retailers in the FMCG and DIY segments, the spokesman said. Strong demand for trucking services is expected toward the end of the year, so there is interest from customers, he said.

Kamaz marketing director Ashot Arutyunyan announced at the International Moscow Automotive Forum at the end of August that the truck maker was the principal investor in National Carrier. He did not comment on the new company's shareholder structure, but said it is a Kamaz startup.
