Steam yachts of a century ago, from Jeff Cole’s collection

DODO

Dodo, Valhalla and Consuelo

Today’s gallery of photos are of steam yachts, and they belong to a collection that Jeff Cole acquired back when he was a teenager.

Except for Dodo  he says they are all private steam yachts, mostly photographed at Cowes , and wonders what what happened to them?

On some odd cuttings that came with the photos, GL Watson is mentioned as a popular designer, and Thames, South Coast, Irish and Clyde yards are mentioned as building this kind of craft.

Dodo on Windemere  appears in a supplement to The Yachtsman  no. 504 published in  December 1900. Photo by  Brunskill of Windemere .

Alberta , owned by His Majesty the King of the Belgians appears in a supplement to The Yachtsman , no. 415, March 1899. Photo by J De Muevyuck .

Valhalla  on hearing that she was third in an ocean race. Jeff thinks she may be a training ship. She appears in a supplement to  Yachting World , June 1905. Photo by Illustration Bureau .

Consuelo  appears in a supplement to The Yachtsman , no. 522, April 1901 Photo A. Debenham , Cowes . The warship in the background appears to have side-by-side funnels and two rigged masts. Aft, Jeff has identified what seems to be a gun extended at deckhouse level consistent with a barbette, and smaller traversing turrets below it, and so he thinks this is a Royal Sovereign Class ship .  HMS Royal Sovereign was flagship of the Channel Squadron round this time, so it could be her.

Ombra was owned by Baron Von Schroeder appears in a supplement to Yachting World , December 1902. The designer: GL Watson, the builder D&W Henderson . She’s described as a steel twin screw schooner, with a Thames measurement of : 267 tons, and 140 by 20.1 by 12.5ft. Photo Kirk & Sons , Cowes.

Vista was owned by Mr WS Hunter , and appears in a supplement to  Yachting World , May 1905. She was designed and built by  W White & Sons , and is described as a composite screw schooner of 95 tons Thames measurement, and 98.4 by 14.6 by 7.7ft. Photo by West of Southsea . She has a fleur de lis at the forepeak, what appears to be a Royal Yacht Club pennant on the mizzen, and a White Ensign on the jackstaff. Under the bowsprit a full rigged ship can be seen in the distance.

Mirage owned by the Marquis of Ormonde , of the Royal Yacht Squadron. She appears in a supplement to Yachting World no.5, Vol 1, 1894. The image is a Photomezzotype by The London Stereoscopic Co . from a photo by W Kirk of Cowes. Jeff remarks that it is one of the earliest photos in his collection – some of the others are too badly foxed or undated. Note two other sailing yachts moored behind.

Erin as she was when she set out to cross the Atlantic . The image is a Photomezzotype from the Yachting World , thinks Jeff. The shot dates from the mid-1890s, but there is no other information. The ‘lights’ are white dots added to the image by hand, as are the letters ‘ERIN’ between the masts.

La Belle Sauvage appears in a supplement to Yachting World , January 1902. The photo is by Beken of Cowes . 1902 was the year of the Coronation Regatta. Note all sails are stowed in covers and the tropical awnings have been rigged.

Sabrina , Thames measurement 513 tons. She appears in a supplement to Yachting World , August 1899. Photo by Kirk of Cowes.

Oimara, 202 tons,  as shown in a supplement to Yachting World , January 1903. Photo by Adamson , Rothesay . Jeff comments that there are canvas screens on the bridge, and that although she is under way she has gangplank rigged. Also notice the figurehead.

Shemara , pictured in a supplement to Yachting World , February 1900. Photo by Debenham , Cowes.

Vanduara , 450 tons, owned by Mr Stewart Clark. The photo comes from a supplement to Yachting World  October 1894. It is a badly foxed Photomezzotype, but shows a female figurehead, and, Jeff thinks, a small un-rigged keelboat yacht in davits aft on the staboard side.

Paulina from a supplement to Yachting World published in May 1900. Photo by Kirk & Sons , Cowes.

Nirvana , owned by the Countess de Bearn , shown in a supplement to Yachting World  February 1904. Photo by Robertson of   Gourock . Jeff says there is a tricolor on the jackstaff, the figurehead seems a bird, and there is a crewman walking a boom rigged with a rope ladder to the dinghy.

Surf , 489 tons, as shown in a supplement the Yachting World , in November 1899. Photo by Debenham of Cowes.

Tuscarora shown in a supplement to Yachting World , February 1902. Photo Beken of    Cowes. There’s a rope ladder over stern, and boats appear to be being prepared for launching.

The steel screw steamer Titania  appeared in a supplement to Yachting World published in  April 1905. She was designed and built by  Day, Summers and Co and owned by  Mr S. Taylor Chadwick . She was of 138 tons Thames Measurement, and measured 116.5 by 16.1 by 10.1ft. The photo is by  Kirk of Cowes.

Researching the fate of these craft, Jeff found that the steam yacht Hiawatha – not pictured in this post – was acquired by the Royal Navy , which renamed her HMS Undine . She served at Sheerness and as flagship to the Commander-in-Chief of the Nore Fleet .

Thanks for the shots and information Jeff!

My congratulations to Jeff Cole who is finally back to share another splendid annotated collection. I assume these are photographed in British waters only, otherwise John Beavor-Webb designs would have made it into the collection. Watson and him were simply the best.

Great pictures. From the time whent yachting had style. Compare these with the yacht of the late Steve Jobs and then tell me something about style.

Thanks for the comments. My collection is to return ‘home’ to Great Britain soon, specifically to the care of the Thames Barge Trust I think. Enquiries to Gavin please for access to the images. But I still collect old nautical post cards, some of which are somewhere on Gavin’s site. Jeff

Beautiful ships, and the crews were might well have been enjoying Raggett’s nourishing stout at some stage, supplied by my great great grandfather R.H. Matthews on Cowes High St. …

I think the Valhalla was the boat of James Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford. Check the bottom of the page.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Lindsay,_26th_Earl_of_Crawford

Could it weigh 1490 tons?

There as a steamyacht called Valhalla that as owned by the millionaire French art collector Comte Boni de Castelanne. The boat as described as: ” a private yacht of 1,600 tons, manned by a hundred sailors and eight officers. He and his wife went to Norway on this boat of Paradise and then made a trip through the Mediterranean. At every port, Counts, Princesses, Grand Dukes and Duchesses were entertained on board. It was on the Valhalla, at Cowes, that Boni gave a regal fête to King Edward, then Prince of Wales. Four hundred tea roses brought from London adorned the portholes. Some time afterwards he astonished Paris with a ball where all the women were dressed like flowers.”

On board the SS Delphine, one of the last steam yachts in the world..

steam yacht zaza

Launched at the beginning of the last century, the SS Delphine is one of the last steam yachts to sail in its original configuration. Guided tour aboard a time machine.

Maxime Leriche

An authentic steam yacht

Built in the tradition of the great American steamers of the early 19th century, the SS Delphine was launched in 1921, on behalf of Horace Dodge, co-founder of the eponymous car manufacturer, who died four months before launching , having succumbed to the Spanish flu.

SS. Delphine, un yacht à vapeur

She is the only yacht of this era to have remained in her original configuration, with a steam-powered propulsion unit. The engine room of the SS Delphine is equipped with three Babcock and Wilcox boilers, which feed two quadruple expansion engines developing 1500hp each. Hence the two letters "SS" for "Steam Ship".

SS. Delphine, un yacht à vapeur

Shipwreck , Spanish flu and Yalta agreements

The SS Delphine had an eventful life. Following a fire , it was wrecked in New York harbor in 1926. Refloated and restored, she continued to sail on the Great Lakes until the beginning of the Second World War.

SS. Delphine, un yacht à vapeur

Like many other yachts at that time, she was requisitioned by the US Navy and converted into a warship. Renamed USS Dauntless, she was equipped with several guns and repainted in grey camouflage. Used as Admiral Ernest King's personal ship, it was on board that Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt prepared the Yalta Conference.

After the war, the ship was bought by his widow, who renamed the boat after their daughter, Delphine.

SS. Delphine, un yacht à vapeur

A seductress who deserves all the attention

During the next 50 years, SS Delphine knew several owners. But the beauty did not get all the attention she deserved and her condition deteriorated for many years. Her current owner, the Belgian Jacques Bruynooghe, bought her in 1997 as a wreck . Her restoration at great expense (for an amount of around 40 million euros), was carried out in a Belgian naval during 6 years.

SS. Delphine, un yacht à vapeur

This long restoration has allowed Delphine to regain its original configuration, but now requires meticulous daily maintenance , especially for its steam engine, manufactured more than a century ago.

SS. Delphine, un yacht à vapeur

" At first glance, the engines seem very simple, especially without electronics, but when it comes to maintenance, it's another matter " according to Willem, the chief mechanic. " And when a part is defective, it is not easy to find it on the market: it must be custom-made by specialized yards! Consequently, this means that you have to be able to anticipate possible problems. This means being able to listen to the machine and to discern every little sign of weakness ".

SS. Delphine, un yacht à vapeur

A timeless charm

Its inverted bow, yellow chimney and the finesse of its lines give Delphine an atypical silhouette, well known on the Mediterranean coast. One of the main difficulties on a century-old yacht is to marry a claimed classicism with some modern equipment, essential for a charter activity.

SS. Delphine, un yacht à vapeur

Her venerable boilers develop only 3000 HP, far from the power race observed on modern yachts . But who cares! With a cruising speed of 13 knots, Delphine is far from being the fastest yacht, but she is undeniably the most charming.

My family of four was driving around Isla Mujeres on our golf cart and just happened upon this place. We thought we would have a drink and check it out. We ended up spending the whole day there. We did not want to leave. We happily relaxed at ZaZa all and had drinks and food. (Check the menu for pricing as some drinks can be expensive.) The kids (13 and 15) enjoyed the pool and kayaks; my husband and I were able to relax by the pool and beach. The bali bed was great (I loved that it had drink/arm rests) and the service was excellent. We will definitely plan on retuning the next time we are on the island.

Great quiet day if you’re looking to just lounge and have drinks and not overheat in the summer Cancun heat. Lots more shade than most other beach clubs

Great spot and great service, ask for Omar from New York…. Bilingual and funny guy. He made my day.

This place is legit. We had a really fun day with Omar. The day before we met Jorge. The place is crawling with great service, beautiful people, and wonderful cocktails. We will be planning our wedding here. Come and see this place—it’s simply amazing. Try the shrimp tacos and the mexcalita.

Fine Oil Painting of Steam Yacht "ZARA" Commissioned by the U.S. Navy 1917

divisor line

Steam Yacht “ZARA” Commissioned by U.S. Navy WW I

steam yacht zaza

Dimensions: Painting  18″ x 11 1/4″  –  Framed  24″ x 17 1/4″ x 1 1/4″

Zara, a 184 gross ton steam yacht, LOA 152″, 20Ft Beam, was built at Paisley, Scotland by Fleming & Ferguson in 1891. She was designed by G.L. Larson and purchased by the US Navy from private owner D. H. Friedman of New York,  in April 1917.   At that time she was placed in commission as USS Zara (SP-133). After not quite a year’s service in the Long Island Sound area, she was decommissioned in April 1918 and stricken from the Navy List soon thereafter. However, Zara remained in use as a guard vessel in western Long Island Sound and was not sold until September 1919.

We think the painting was commissioned by one of the private owners, possibly D.H. Moore of New York (given the flag with the “M” aloft) who owned the yacht in 1901.  The painting shows very fine draftsmanship and detail with several figures aboard as she was underway – perhaps on Long Island Sound.

Condition: The painting has been recently cleaned and reframed with a distressed wood veneer and gold liner. There are some very minor scratches and water drops on the canvas, but nothing that detracts from the painting.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to charter in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.
