Finding Your Next Bimini Top for Boat: A Buyer’s Guide

Several questions may come to mind when choosing a Bimini top for your boat. Whether you’re a returning buyer or a beginner at sailing, all your queries will be answered in the following buyer’s guide.

Here are some things to consider before buying a bimini top for your boat:

The Material of the Bimini Top

Bimini tops are available in a variety of materials with some being better than the other. This is an essential consideration because the material and quality of the top will affect its longevity.

Here are your options when it comes to materials:

It is an expensive choice but worth the price because of its softness and strength. This material offers strong protection against harsh UV rays and won’t wear out or fade. If you clean it extensively, you’ll have to waterproof it again.

Vinyl-coated fabric makes for good Bimini tops because of its waterproofing capability. It resists water, driving it to the sides. While the fabric is not breathable, it compensates for this by being easy to clean and highly durable.

Solution-dyed polyester

This fabric stands out due to its attractive and rich color appearance. Since the material is resistant to UV rays, it’s effective against the sun. Additional qualities include but are not limited to water repellency, durability, and abrasion resistance. While known to be much stronger than acrylic, polyester’s only downside is that it tends to fade quicker than its competition.

Cotton duck

This is one of the most affordable Bimini tops available on the market. Considering that the material is less durable compared to the ones mentioned above on the list, you can expect its UV resistance properties to be less effective than acrylic.

Types of Bimini Top for Boats

There are two types of Bimini tops available on the market:

  • Off-the-shelf:  These are standard Bimini tops and are designed without keeping any specific boat in mind. Usually, they are available in a rectangular shape but in a limited color range.
  • OEM:  These tops use precise digital templates. Meant to tailor to the needs of specific boats, some boat manufacturers also provide Bimini tops to fit their boats.

Other Features to Consider in Bimini Tops for Boats

Easy storage.

When you’re not using your Bimini top, you can’t leave it out in the open. Since it’s recommended to store it somewhere, it’s best to look for ones that can fit easily into your storage space.

To start, look for a top that has storage boots. If you don’t buy one that comes with the boot, you’ll have to purchase it separately. Also, make sure to always clean the top before storing it somewhere to avoid a build-up of dirt and dust elements.

There is nothing as the right price of a Bimini top. Usually, the price is directly proportional to the quality. If you go with the cheap options, you will pay the price in longevity and you might have to get a new one just after a few weeks. To avoid this, make your budget justifies the features and quality of the Bimini top you’re purchasing.

People Also Asked

The first thought that comes to your mind may concern your Bimini top’s color. In a flawless world, that would work, but in terms of quality, darker materials aren’t as durable as lighter ones due to the higher amount of dyes. On the flip side, darker colors absorb more heat than light colors and are less visible.  For these same reasons, you must decide between quality and heat absorption when selecting the color of your Bimini top.

Experts recommend keeping the boat under 35 mph. Any higher than this, and you may risk your Bimini top detaching. If you want to go at a higher speed, you should implement thru-bolting.

Bimini tops get their name from their place of origin, the island of Bimini in the Bahamas.

Custom Boat Canvas, Bimini Tops, Bimini Enclosures, Hardtop Enclosures, Sailboat Dodgers, Navy/Convertible Tops and Boat Cushions

Who is harbor canvas company, llc.

My name is David and I'm the owner/operator of Harbor Canvas Company, LLC. I'm an avid and lifelong passionate boater professionally trained in custom marine canvas fabrication. My passion for marine canvas work started in 2006 with the restoration  of a 1967 Chris Craft and eventually evolved into the formation of Harbor Canvas Company in 2014. I specialize in, and focus on;

  • Custom Marine Canvas: bimini's and enclosures, sailboat dodgers, custom boat covers and hardtop enclosures, navy (convertible) tops and canvas service & repair.
  • Custom porch enclosures in both acrylic and screen.
  • Custom screen garage door enclosures.
  • Custom marine and outdoor cushions.
  • Canvas & acrylic Covid protection barriers.
  • Sun & sail shades.
  • Custom duck canvas bags including duffle, ditty, and tote bags.

"Custom marine canvas" means the canvas work is specifically designed for the details on your boat. And, just as importantly, for your needs and application. This insures a custom, clean fit, professional appearance and a quality that is rarely, if ever replicated by factory canvas products.

Each canvas project is patterned on your boat and framing to insure the best possible look and fit. I also use a very meticulous method and unique design that's carried across in all  my canvas projects. You'll find similar design elements in all my Bimini Tops and Enclosures. There's even certain distinct elements noticeable in the Dodgers (both Traditional and California). Some of these design elements include concealed external zippers. This not only creates a very nice, clean custom look, but it also protects the zipper from the elements and UV exposure. I also use custom designed forward and aft visors, straight, by curve or flip trace depending on the tops needs. These visors are double material which give a much better look. It also makes the visors much more durable and able to hold a clean form.

All of the framing hardware is marine grade stainless steel. I don't use plastic fittings or aluminum tubing. The frames are custom designed by me and fabricated right in my shop. Again, this is the only way to produce that clean, custom look.

I use only quality, marine grade products including lifelong Solarfix UV thread and  Sunbrella  marine fabrics. The use of marine grade, UV resistant products is paramount when it comes to the marine canvas application. Some factory or off the shelf products keep their pricing low by offering lesser quality material. While this may save in the initial cost, it inevitability results in a much shorter lifespan, poorer quality cover, poorer fit and more money in the long run.

Where am I located?

I'm in the beautiful Thousand Islands region on Point Peninsula .

Custom-Made Hard Top Biminis

I was wondering if there is any information regarding the protocol for replacing canvas with a rigid Bimini/dodger on a small 36-foot catamaran. I could not find a review of solid Bimini replacements. We have strong stainless steel frames. They are fixed with metal struts with no flexible straps. I do want to be able to see the sails from the helm and bulkhead mount. I want to be able to take advantage of roll up clear plastic front and side curtains. Most summers my current set stays in the rolled up position. They have since shrunk enough that they can no longer be fully snapped.

I am looking for some material that is relatively light with strength. Is there any info on the polycarbonate tops such as the Hard to Top system ( www.hardtotop.com )? It seems to be light and strong, translucent. It comes in several panels to make up the necessary width. Is there any other material options that combine light weight and strength? The solid plastic systems seem to be very heavy per square foot.

Bill Hudson

Half Moon, Endeavour Cat 36

Because these are semi-custom jobs, we havent done a dedicated review of hard-top Bimini options, but this topic is definitely worth a closer look. Hard tops are so popular among warm-water cruising catamarans that they are standard on most of the boats you see today. Retrofitting one on an older boat, however, deserves some careful thought. Your concern about weight is on target. On a catamaran like yours, the weight of the top and the structure begins to add up quickly-as does cost.

Because the Hard to Top System can be incorporated into an existing Bimini frame, it would appear to be a cost effective option, but wed be concerned about longevity of any plastic, and the translucent nature of the material seems to defeat the purpose of a Bimini, which is to create shade.

A canvas Bimini offers many advantages over a rigid one, especially to offshore sailors. Importantly, you can fold it down or remove it in a gale, when the windage of a permanent hard top can affect the boats trim and balance. And Bimini tops almost always interfere with access to the mainsail. You can usually zip out a panel of a canvas Bimini, or remove it completely as needed.

A hard dodger (as opposed to a Bimini) is less intrusive. Weve seen several custom , lightweight designs with low profiles that provide four-season protection and look terrific. For many boats, a good compromise is a hard dodger top (usually custom made), with canvas sides and clear vinyl front panels. We recently compared three types of popular clear vinyl glazing: Strataglass, OSea , and Regalite (see PS January 2014, How do Different Vinyl Types Compare? ). And this month we look at the long-term results of our canvas test.

To get a better picture of the pros and cons of hard top versus a conventional canvas top, we will begin a survey of various custom shops that offer hard tops and dodgers and compare costs and materials. The more sensible hard Bimini tops that weve seen for catamarans incorporate lightweight cored panels and aircraft-grade anodized aluminum supports. Atlantic Towers in Bayville, New Jersey ( www.atlantictowers.com ) has a number of custom sailboat jobs to its credit. In Southwest Florida, we would recommend JTR Enterprises ( www.jtrmarine.com ), the family-run welding company in Gulfport that rigged the early Endeavours.

Two companies we are familiar with fabricate hard-tops and dodgers using thermoformed ABS plastic: Cruising Hardtops ( www.cruisinghardtops.com ) and Shipshape Canvas ( www.shipshape.canvas.com ). However, as you pointed out, these tops are heavier than comparable designs using cored panels.

Just about any region in the country is home to at least one custom welder/fabricator who can help you come up with design . The aim would be to keep weight minimal without breaking the bank. Wed invite any comments from owners who have retrofitted their boats with hard tops and have advice on this topic.

Canvas Care For Boat Covers And Bimini Tops

Treat your canvas right and it should last for years.

Cleaning boat canvas with water spray

Keeping your boat canvas clean and waterproofed will help protect your boat. Just make sure deep cleaning doesn't damage the canvas.

Keeping a boat shipshape might seem like a mostly aesthetic endeavor, but there is something to be said for the old expression "a clean boat is a happy boat." Conversely, an unclean boat can also be a "spiteful" boat. Most marine fasteners, fittings, and gadgets are designed to withstand the elements, but if left unchecked, an accumulation of dust, dirt, and standing water can end up compromising a lot more than a vessel's curb appeal. Many boaters turn to canvas covers and tops to protect their pride and joy from rain, dirt, and the occasional bird bombing.

While a canvas can spare you the misery of taking a rag to the avian poop deck, it demands its own share of TLC. Plus, if not cared for properly, canvas can lose its ability to repel water, meaning that instead of protecting your boat, you'll be subjecting it to a consistent trickle of guano-steeped rainwater. Luckily, keeping canvas surfaces clean and in good shape is easier than you may think.

Quick Cleanups

Cleaning canvas is easy, but it isn't foolproof. Going at it with a pressure washer or some household cleaning detergent might yield promising results, but doing so can actually damage the material. Your best bet is to start by gently removing loose dirt and bird droppings with a bench brush or a dry rag. It's a good idea to remove bird droppings or bug splatters as soon as you notice them as they can leave formidable stains if left to sit. In some cases, a slightly damp rag will be needed. But don't apply too much brute force or it can work dirt into the material.

Cleaning boat canvas with a soft brush

A soft brush may be all that's needed to brush off bird droppings or bug splatters.

To get rid of deeper stains, you'll have to employ some mild soap like Woolite or Dawn. Keep in mind that many detergents can break down the canvas's water- and UV-resistant coatings, so it's always a good idea to check the manufacturer's recommended cleaning solution. You can also find purpose-built canvas cleaners from companies like Starbrite.

Directions vary slightly between products, but in general, start by spraying down the canvas with fresh water. Pressure washer jets are powerful enough to damage canvas fibers, so using a regular garden hose is the best move. The goal here is to fully soak the material rather than try to remove dirt with water pressure. Make sure to thoroughly dampen seams where the canvas is doubled up. Then gently apply the soap with a soft bristle brush. After working it into the fabric, allow it to sit for several minutes to help break down the grime. Once it's had time to soak in, go at it again (gently) with the brush, then rinse the canvas thoroughly. You might have to repeat the process a few times to get ideal results.

Spraying Fabric Guard on bimini top

A good reproofer is easy to apply and will extend the life of your canvas. (Photo: 303 Products)

Reconditioning

Proper cleaning will help prolong the life of your canvas, but eventually, its protective coatings will deteriorate and it will need to be "reproofed." Canvas reproofers, like 303 Marine Fabric Guard, are solutions that restore water- and stain-resistant coatings, preventing mold growth and further staining or deterioration. Their application process is a little more demanding, but still pretty straightforward. Reproofers have to be applied after the canvas has been cleaned and allowed to dry, and many can't be exposed to direct sunlight during their curing process. That being said, all you'll need is a spray bottle of the stuff and a brush or roller for touching up hard-to-spray areas to get your canvas back in shape. Tip: Applying multiple light coats of reproofer tends to work better than applying one thick coat.

Buyers Guide: Choosing a Canvas Boat Bimini Top

Good As New

With proper care and maintenance, there's no reason that your canvas won't last a very long time. And even though canvas care might take a little elbow grease, it certainly beats buying a new cover or scraping gull guano off your multifunction display. The one downside? If you invest enough time into it, you might end up wanting a cover to protect your boat cover!
