The Hunter 420 is a 43.42ft b&r designed by Hunter Design Team and built in fiberglass by Hunter Marine (USA) between 1998 and 2004.

The Hunter 420 is a light sailboat which is a good performer. It is reasonably stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser. The fuel capacity is originally very small. There is a good water supply range.

This Hunter Passage 420 is a Rare Find.

LOCATION GULFPORT FLORIDA

Until purchased by the current owners in May of 2022, she lived her entire life as a Fresh Water boat on the Great Lakes.  She was also winterized and wrapped in the off season.

After taking delivery and updating many of her systems, the owners brought Sail la Vie down the river system and have shown her the Gulf of Mexico, the Florida Keys, Bahamas and the Caribbean where she is currently sailing.

This boat is very clean, well cared for and she is "Ready for More!"

Owners Note

Living aboard our Hunter 420 sailboat has been an experience that combines the essence of adventure with the comforts of home. Inside, the well designed living space, ample storage, and the large aft cabin make it feel like living in a house. The queen-sized bed with clearance on both sides offers a cozy retreat after a day of sailing. With the luxurious headroom we can even sit up in bed to read or watch movies at night and during rainy days on anchor. Having two cabins with their own heads has allowed us to both work remotely without interrupting each other or disturbing each other's zoom meetings.  

The outdoor deck space between the cockpit and the stern has served us for both solitude as well as for social gatherings. Mornings often find us there, drinking coffee while watching the sunrise, or practicing yoga. This large space also means that Sail La Vie is often chosen by our friend boats as the place to hold dinner gatherings and anchor drams. It also provides a lovely space for stargazing or sun tanning. 

With all these comforts, Sail La Vie is also a darn good sailing vessel. The sail plan is simple but effective, with a 100% Genoa and in-mast Furling Main. All lines are routed into the cockpit so we have rarely had to leave the cockpit while underway.  The feathering prop has been an eye-opener for us. Not only does it allow for about an extra knot of speed while feathered, but it also means that the boat has almost no prop walk. 

All these features have meant that the Hunter 420 Passage has been the perfect liveaboard and cruising boat for us, taking us from Lake Michigan to the Caribbean in comfort and safety. Sail La Vie is more than a boat, she is a home on the water, and a reminder of the limitless adventure that awaits when we dare to set sail.

The incredibly successful Passage 450 - and now the Passage 420 - have been designed and engineered to reflect the years of knowledge gained through the owners, focus groups, Consumer Satisfaction Surveys, a world-class dealer organization, and the continued dedication of Warren Luhrs and his Hunter Design Team. The Passage 420 mirrors the innovations that have evolved throughout the Hunter line. Special features such as the B & R rig, integrated cockpit arch, mast struts, and composite chainplates are all present on the 420. Center cockpits are not usually known for performing, but the Passage 420 surprisingly breaks the rules. Below, the innovation continues with a great salon complete with convertible dinette and opposing settee - both loaded with storage capability. The highly polished teak dining table complements the rich fabrics and durable Corian. Television, VCR, and AM-FM stereo with CD will keep the crew entertained while the chef prepares in the enormous galley. Side by side dual opening refrigerator and freezer, three burner gimbaled range with oven, microwave, and twin stainless sinks - not to mention a hidden trash receptacle - are included. The navigation station opposite the galley houses the controls to all the ship's systems and allows space for all navigational electronics as well. Comfort is important at Hunter, and the staterooms aboard the 420 are no exception. Aft, there is an island, queen-sized berth with an inner-spring mattress that is flanked by hanging wardrobes, and drawers large enough for long term liveaboards. Even a slide-out desk is included. The private en suite head features plenty of storage, beautiful Corian covered vanity, and a shower. Forward, the guest stateroom with its double berth and private head with shower will please family or friends. Spacious and comfortable, this stateroom also boasts immense storage and plenty of natural light and ventilation.

Hunter 420 Passage???

I was on a "Hunter 420 Passage" last weekend - It was stenciled on the side of the boat. When I go to Sailboat Data i find a "Hunter 420" listed at 43.5 LOA and a "Hunter 42 Passage" listed at 42 LOA. They each have quite different displacment/length ratios (which I refer to for my quick reference to what kind of boat I am looking at). When I go to the Hunter site listing of older models I do not find a Hunter 420 at all and nothing (that I could see) listed as a Passage. What gives?

Phil Herring

The 420 was built in the late 90's and morphed into the 426 around 2000. It's a completely different boat than the 42, which was built from around 1991 through 1998. The Passage and Legend designations you see on some of the boats should be ignored. It wasn't consistently applied and gets misused all the time. Originally, the Passage name applied to Hunter's center cockpit designs: the 42, and I think the 420 and 450 carried it, too, but then it was dropped. If you google images of Hunter 42 and Hunter 420 you'll see substantial differences.

But I am seeing three feet difference in the same Hunter 420 (not Hunter 420 -vs- Hunter 42- although the Hunter 42 is the only one I see in writing called a Passage - even though I was actually on one called a Hunter 420 Passage). Moving from confused to confounded. Next stop is certifiable.  

I think it's just an elongation game. In other words, IF I recall correctly, the 410 and 420 are actually the same hull, for example. I suspect the difference you are trying to figure out is length on deck vs. length overall. Since the anchor platform extends way out (see photos) it may be just a different measurement of the same basic boat. You will see minor differences in water line length, beam and LOA, but they are certainly not different hulls, rather they are differences in deck molds, displacement, etc. I think .. .

All 420s, 450s, 456s, and at least some 42s (which are all center cockpit Hunters) were delivered with the "Passage" decal on both sides of the hull (above the number). IMHO, the "Passage" 'moniker' was simply a marketing tool. As far as the discrepancy in measurements, I suspect that Rick's comments are the most reasonable explanation. why not go look?? There is no shortage of either model for sale across America- I suggest you go look at one of each- I did and the choice was really simple for me- I chose an older 42 and remain delighted with my choice! Let your eyes and your brain connect to your heart and I think you will find the choice is easy! You're definitely right about the inconsistencies of the LOA documentation. I have a 420 Passage (2003 model) and truly don't know my LOA. Never took the time to measure it, but I suppose I could...  

The easiest way to tell All of the Passage 42s had a backstay and the 420 does not since it is a true B&R Rig. They are both good boats!
