The superyachts owned by tech moguls

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is set to join the exclusive club of yacht-owning tech tycoons as the rumoured owner of Oceanco's mighty 127m sailing yacht . Though it should come as no surprise - other big names in tech such as the late Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison and Paul Allen have been responsible for some of the biggest and most ground-breaking superyachts in the world...

The 127-metre Oceanco sailing yacht Koru, formerly Y721, was launched and reportedly delivered to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in April 2023. This three-masted schooner, meaning “new beginnings” in Maori, with an expected 33000 GT and a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, is the largest in the world and the longest built in the Netherlands at Oceanco. Knocking Lürssen's Eos , owned by Biller and Diane von Furstenburg, off the top spot, Koru harnesses design similarities with her black hull, white superstructure and classic lines. However, the intricate gold paintwork, scarlet bootstrap and elaborate figurehead on the bow particularly set her apart.

Larry Ellison

American business magnate Larry Ellison is the co-founder of the billion-dollar computer tech corporation Oracle. In 2004, he commissioned the 138-metre Lürssen superyacht Rising Sun (pictured), which stands today as the 15th largest yacht in the world. It was also the last yacht that ever came from the drawing boards of legendary designed Jon Bannenberg, sporting a military-esque profile with a lean destroyer-type hull and extensive use of structural glass . Rising Sun boasts 8,000m² of living space including a wine cellar and basketball court, with a crew of 45. One of her tenders, a catamaran, even carries the yacht’s 4x4 vehicle ashore.

Ellison later sold the yacht to media mogul David Geffen and has since hosted a parade of Hollywood's glitterati on board including Leonardo DiCaprio, Steven Spielberg, Bruce Springsteen and Oprah Winfrey – to name a few.

In 2011, Ellison appeared to downsize and took delivery of the 88-metre Feadship Musashi . Not unlike Rising Sun in its appearance, structural glass features heavily throughout with a central glass lift, surrounded by a stainless steel and glass staircase that passes through every deck.

More about this yacht

The late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is responsible for two of the most iconic superyachts in the world. At 126-metres in length, Octopus is perhaps his most famous. Built by Lürssen in 2003, this ice-classed superyacht was designed for extended cruising to the most remote locations on earth with a range of 12,500 nautical miles. Home to a helicopter garage, drive-in tender garage, six tenders, and a submarine, she packs a serious punch within her 9,932GT – not to mention the cinema, swimming pool, recording studio, basketball court and spa. At the end of 2019, she joined the market for the very first time , having completed an eight-month refit at Blohm+Voss, and remains the benchmark for exploration yachting.

Tatoosh is another honourable mention and was built by German shipyard Nobiskrug in 2000, three years prior to the delivery of Octopus . At 92-metres, she's smaller than her successor, but to describe Tatoosh as "small" would be a severe understatement. Highlights include a six-foot-deep swimming pool, a pair of helipads, a crew of 30, and a custom 12-metre Hinckley powerboat that she carries on her top deck. Tatoosh is also listed for sale following a refit earlier this year.

Yachts for charter

The 78-metre Feadship Venus was built for the late Apple boss and founder Steve Jobs. Built under the codename Project Aqua, Venus was launched to international fanfare in 2012, heralded for its extensive use of glass and pared-back design courtesy of Philippe Starck . Innovative features include a false top deck that conceals the communication and television receivers from view and a passarelle that, when opened, looks like the charging port of an iPhone. Venus ’s interior details have been closely guarded since its launch. Sadly, Jobs died a year before the yacht was delivered.

Charles Simonyi

Charles Simonyi led the team that built the first edition of the Microsoft Office software suite and was rumoured to have previously owned Lürssen’s iconic 71-metre SKAT .  Nearly two decades after her launch in 2002, she joined the market for the first time and now Simonyi is thought to have upgraded to the 89-metre Lürssen Norn . Both yachts, penned by Espen Onion, share similar design features. Standout features include an alfresco cinema and adapted depth pool floor with dance floor. Norn was delivered in May 2023.

Sergey Brin

Google co-founder Sergey Brin reportedly owns the high-speed SilverYachts superyacht named Dragonfly , after Google’s once-secret project to launch a censored search engine in China. Delivered in 2009, the 73.3-metre Dragonfly was hailed as the fastest, most fuel-efficient long-range cruising superyacht on the water with a transatlantic range at 22 knots and a fuel consumption of only 360 litres per hour at 18 knots, extending her range to 4,500 nautical miles. Dragonfly is said to have a dance floor and open-air movie theatre on board. The vessel was applauded for its contribution to the disaster relief effort in Vanuatu after Hurricane Pam devastated the island in 2015. The crew reportedly moved 62 metric tons of freshwater ashore, treated over 250 patients, facilitated three medical evacuations, and built shelters in multiple villages and cleared numerous helicopter landing zones for ongoing support.

Google’s billionaire co-founder Larry Page purchased the 60-metre explorer yacht conversion Senses from a New Zealand businessman Sir Douglas Myers back in 2011. The globe-trotting superyacht features interiors by Philippe Starck and can accommodate a total of 12 guests on board, with primary guests reaping the benefits of the master suite's gyro-stabilised bed. Senses also houses an exceptional toy box with three high-speed tenders, six wave runners, a jet board and a JetLev. According to the New Zealand Herald, Senses is currently undergoing a refit in Whangārei, New Zealand, after being sold to an unknown buyer in 2020.

Barry Diller

The world’s largest three-masted schooner – also the third largest sailing yacht in the world – is owned by fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg and her husband Barry Diller, chairman and senior executive of IAC/InterActiveCorp and Expedia Group. The 92.92-metre sailing yacht, named Eos , was built in Germany by Lürssen and delivered in 2006 with a trio of masts that stand 61-metres tall. The sailing yacht has hosted the couple's star-studded group of friends including Andy Cohen, Gayle King, Bradley Cooper, Harry Styles and Karlie Kloss. The interiors were designed by Francois Catroux, who Vanity Fair named as “the super-rich's favourite interior designer" in 2016.

Mark Zuckerburg

The 107-metre Kleven superyacht Andromeda was built for serial superyacht owner Graeme Hart and delivered under the name Ulysses . In 2017, a year after its launch, rumours began circulating that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg had purchased the rugged, six-deck explorer (although a Facebook spokesperson was quick to stamp out the rumours and released a statement denying the claims). Andromeda can carry 36 guests and is equipped with an impressive inventory of toys and tenders, including six motorbikes, two ATVs, a helicopter and an amphibious rib. Five years after her launch, Andromeda still ranks among the largest explorer yachts in the world .

Eric Schmidt

The former Google ceo Eric Schmidt backed out of the purchase of the abandoned 81.3-metre Oceanco Alfa Nero but has been said to have moved onto become the new owner of a 95-metre Lürssen. Kismet was sold in September 2023 to the billionaire as part of one of the biggest brokerage deal of the year. With the details shrouded in secrecy the yacht is now aptly known as Whisper . Espen Onio was responsible for her iconic exterior while inside was thanks to  Reymond Langton , achieving the original brief from the previous commissioning owner Shahid Khan of “caviar and champagne.” Standout details include the hi-tech, art deco saloon, a private observation platform and the Persian-inspired spa area.

The co-founder and former ceo of WhatsApp, Jan Koum, has been rumoured to own the 99.9-metre Feadship , Moonrise. The yacht’s clean and strong lines, penned by Chris Bottoms from Studio de Voogt , won the highly competitive class of best displacement motor yachts above 3,000 GT in the World Superyacht Awards 2021. Features include the helicopter landing deck and modern interiors by Remi Tessier . Accommodation is for up to 16 guests, and there are 32 crew members onboard Moonrise to attend to the guests' every need. The Ukrainian-American mogul is also said to own the accompanying support vessel Nebula.

Evan Speigel

The Silicone Valley ceo, Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel has been reportedly said to own the 94.8-metre Feadship Bliss. Delivered in 2021 the motor yacht penned by Feadship's Studio De Voogt Naval Architects has most recently been spotted cruising Auckland in September 2023. Spiegel is rumoured to be Feadship's younger client. Bliss can accommodate up to 18 guests across nine staterooms; however little else is known about the 2983 GT yacht.

A $45 million superyacht formerly owned by a Google co-founder is in Whangārei, undergoing a refit.

Senses, a 59-metre vessel weighing almost 1000 tonnes, is currently sitting in a slipway (boat ramp) at Ship Repair NZ's Port Rd site as it completes its seventh refit in New Zealand, believed to be its first in Whangārei.

According to the SuperYachtfan website, Google co-founder Larry Page bought the expedition vessel in 2011 from New Zealand multi-millionaire Sir Douglas Myers, the long-time chief executive of Lion Breweries and Lion Nathan who passed away in 2017.

The Northern Advocate understands Page, worth an estimated $90 billion, sold Senses last year to an unknown person.

The vessel, built in 1999, can accommodate 12 guests and a crew of 14. It has a range of 11,112 kilometres, has four high speed tenders and a helicopter landing platform. It was spotted in Nelson in 2015 and again in Auckland in 2016.

Senses had been in Whangārei since December 5 and would stay in the slipway and undergo mechanical, structural, interior and paint work until the end of March, when it would be shifted to Port Nikau for further work.

Foreign vessels are not permitted to arrive in New Zealand unless they have an exemption, according to the Maritime Border Order. The permission to grant these exemptions lies with Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield.

Among other circumstances, vessels may be granted an exemption if it is for a significant refit.

Senses' owner could not be on board during the refit and only those essential to the job could enter the vessel.

Senses' prior refits, managed by Integrated Marine Group Ltd, were believed to have been done in Auckland. However, it was decided to utilise Whangārei after increased competition in the Auckland market.

"We're finding now that, to a degree, we're getting squeezed out of Auckland and there are some very good facilities in Whangārei that we are pretty impressed with," Integrated Marine Group general manager Phil Redpath said.

"So far, we're pleased with the workforce and facilities [in Whangārei]."

Redpath was confident the vessel would be back in Whangārei waters for future refits if progress continued as expected.

Google Co-Founder Buys Luxury Mega-Yacht

January 10, 2011 / 6:08 PM EST / CBS News

Larry Ellison's got one. So does fellow tech gazillionaire Paul Allen. And, now, apparently so does Larry Page.

The New Zealand Herald is reporting that Google co-founder Larry Page has bought a luxury yacht from New Zealand businessman Douglas Myers for an undisclosed sum. The yacht, named Senses, was listed for sale for $60.5 million.

"Its stylish interiors are finished by famous French designer Philippe Starck and its split-level decks are home to sun-lounging areas, festooned with a multitude of deck chairs. There are sheltered indoor and outdoor dining areas, as well as a gym and on-deck jacuzzi. The yacht can accommodate 10 guests and 14 crew members. There are pleasure-boats of all sizes available for guests' use and the yacht can carry a helicopter with ease. "Senses has previously been available for charter in the Seychelles Islands for $343,000 a week, not including food, drink and gas."

LTA Research Pathfinder 1 Airship

Luxury blimps appear to be in the midst of a revival, but Sergey Brin wants to ensure they’re bigger and better than before.

The Google co-founder, now worth more than $90 billion, has been quietly working away on a massive new airship that will be the longest to hit the skies in almost a century.

LTA Research Pathfinder 1 Airship

LTA Research has enlisted Kilwell Fibrelab to create the airship’s lightweight frame.  LTA Research

Christened Pathfinder 1, the new airship is a far cry from the zeppelins of 100 years ago. It is expected to measure 400 feet from tip to tail, while a third iteration dubbed Pathfinder 3 will stretch about 600 feet. That means the proposed Pathfinder models will be the biggest airship built in the country since 1931 when Goodyear completed the 785-foot USS Macon and USS Akron for the US Navy.

In terms of construction, the Pathfinder’s “deep ring” internal structure will be made of Kilwell Fibrelab ’s lightweight polymer tubing that will be reinforced with carbon fiber. It’s this rigid framework that distinguishes the airship from a blimp. The sturdy skeleton will be wrapped in a hard-wearing outer covering that will make the balloon plenty durable.

Completed in 1931, the USS Akron measured 785-feet.

Completed in 1931, the USS Akron measured 785-feet.

Like the Macon and Akron before it, the Pathfinder models will run on lighter-than-air helium. It’s non-combustible and far safer than the dangerously flammable hydrogen that was used in the ill-fated, 804-foot Hindenburg . The all-electric propulsion system, meanwhile, will be powered initially by batteries but could run on hydrogen fuel cells in the future. The latter will see the airship produce zero emissions.

Again like the Macon and Akron , the Pathfinder will be built at the gigantic Akron Airdock. LTA is actually in the process of acquiring this 364,000-square-foot facility, as well as recruiting a crew for the new endeavor. The company says the airships will be primarily used to bring humanitarian aid (food and supplies) to remote areas that are difficult to access via traditional aircraft and vehicles.

From the garage to the Googleplex

The Google story begins in 1995 at Stanford University. Larry Page was considering Stanford for grad school and Sergey Brin, a student there, was assigned to show him around.

By some accounts, they disagreed about nearly everything during that first meeting, but by the following year they struck a partnership. Working from their dorm rooms, they built a search engine that used links to determine the importance of individual pages on the World Wide Web. They called this search engine Backrub.

Soon after, Backrub was renamed Google (phew). The name was a play on the mathematical expression for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros and aptly reflected Larry and Sergey's mission “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”

Over the next few years, Google caught the attention of not only the academic community, but Silicon Valley investors as well. In August 1998, Sun co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim wrote Larry and Sergey a check for $100,000, and Google Inc. was officially born. With this investment, the newly incorporated team made the upgrade from the dorms to their first office: a garage in suburban Menlo Park, California, owned by Susan Wojcicki (employee #16 and former CEO of YouTube). Clunky desktop computers, a ping pong table, and bright blue carpet set the scene for those early days and late nights. (The tradition of keeping things colorful continues to this day.)

Even in the beginning, things were unconventional: from Google’s initial server (made of Lego) to the first “Doodle” in 1998: a stick figure in the logo announcing to site visitors that the entire staff was playing hooky at the Burning Man Festival. “Don't be evil” captured the spirit of our intentionally unconventional methods. In the years that followed, the company expanded rapidly — hiring engineers, building a sales team, and introducing the first company dog, Yoshka . Google outgrew the garage and eventually moved to its current headquarters (a.k.a.“The Googleplex”) in Mountain View, California. The spirit of doing things differently made the move. So did Yoshka.

The relentless search for better answers continues to be at the core of everything we do. Today, Google makes hundreds of products used by billions of people across the globe, from YouTube and Android to Gmail and, of course, Google Search. Although we’ve ditched the Lego servers and added just a few more company dogs, our passion for building technology for everyone has stayed with us — from the dorm room, to the garage, and to this very day.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin may have only taken salaries of $1 during their time at Google, but they're still two of the richest people in the world.

Page and Brin are a bit less rich after the search engine's parent company reported lower than expected fourth-quarter revenue  on Monday. Page's net worth fell $1.9 billion , while Brin's dropped $1.8 billion , according to Forbes.

Both Page and Brin are among Alphabet's largest shareholders, valuing their combined fortune at $126.9 billion, according to the Forbes Billionaires List . In December, the billionaire pair announced they were stepping down from their posts atop Alphabet, writing that the company was "well-established" and "no longer need two CEOs and a president. "

Here's a look at how Page and Brin made and spend their fortunes.

Sergey Brin and Larry Page founded Google (now owned by parent company Alphabet) in 1998 in a garage in Menlo Park, California.

In a letter in December, the billionaire duo announced that they would be stepping back from their roles as CEO and president of Alphabet.

"We've never been ones to hold on to management roles when we think there's a better way to run the company," the letter reads. "And Alphabet no longer needs two CEOs and a President." Google CEO Sundar Pichai will be taking over as the CEO of Alphabet.

Page was born in 1973 to two computer science professors at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. Even at a young age, he enjoyed taking machines apart and trying to put them back together to understand how they functioned.

In 2005, Page bought a $7.2 million home in Old Palo Alto. The home, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built from 1931 to 1941 for Bay Area artist Pedro de Lemos.

In 2009, after Page bought the historic home, he started buying adjacent properties to construct an environmentally friendly estate. The 6,000-square-foot home has a roof garden with solar panels and four bedrooms.

We don't know much about what Page's home looks like on the inside, but we do know that sometimes his billionaire buddy Elon Musk, who doesn't own property in Silicon Valley, sleeps over.

"He'll e-mail and say, 'I don't know where to stay tonight. Can I come over?'" Page told Ashlee Vance for her book, "Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future." "I haven't given him a key or anything yet."

Brin has even swankier digs in New York City's tony West Village, where he's neighbors with celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker and Tiger Woods. He bought a 3,457-square-foot penthouse there for $8.5 million in 2008.

Page and Brin also travel to Sicily every year to host the super-exclusive Google Camp.

Google camp takes place at the verdura resort, which has a 200-foot infinity pool, a mile of private coastline on the mediterranean, and two 18-hole golf courses., page and brin could enjoy authentic cuisine at verdura's seven restaurants with google campers like snapchat ceo evan spiegel, george lucas, and pharrell., staying at verdura costs up to $2,000 for one night. that gets you a 1,600-square-foot villa with a private pool and dining area, two golf carts, and complimentary spa treatments upon arrival..

The two cofounders have also been known to spend their fortunes vacationing in Fiji.

While they were in Fiji in 2012, Brin and Page rode in Brin's superyacht: a 73-meter vessel called the Dragonfly. Brin reportedly bought it for $80 million in 2011. Previously, it was available for charter it for $773,000 per week.

Constructed in 2009, the Dragonfly was the world's fastest superyacht. It has an open-air cinema, Jacuzzi, and a dance floor. It can hold 18 guests and 16 crew members.

Meanwhile, page's own superyacht isn't anything to sneeze at. the 60-meter vessel accommodates up to 12, has six decks, open and shaded sun decks, a gym, and jacuzzi — as well as five waverunners..

Brin and Page also travel in style by air. They bought a Boeing 767-200 in 2005 — an unusual choice as executives usually prefer Gulfstream jets.

The former passenger jet carries 50 passengers. there are several seating areas, two staterooms with connecting bathrooms and showers, and a dining area., these guys don't just have a private plane — they also have an $82 million private airport. google began building its own private airport near the san jose airport in 2014..

Page would likely also give some money to his two children and his wife, Lucy Page Southworth. Southworth is a biomedical informatics researcher, and their children were born in 2009 and 2011. (Page is so private that we don't even know if the younger child is a boy or a girl. The older child is a boy.)

Brin also has two children with his former wife Anne Wojcicki, the cofounder and CEO of $1.5 billion personal genetics company 23andMe.

Brin's and Wojcicki's children don't exactly live in the lap of luxury that their parents' wild successes would indicate. As Wojcicki told The New York Times in 2017, she wants to protect her children from the "insanity" of the billionaire lifestyle — the kids do their own laundry, for instance.

The duo is among the most philanthropic billionaires in the US. From 2000 to 2017, Brin has donated $37.5 billion (6% of his fortune) and Page $38.5 billion (4%). In 2018 however, both Brin and Page gave 0% of their net worths to charity.

And Brin has been reportedly building an entire flying airship at a NASA research center near Mountain View, California. The project costs between $100 and $150 million — and is funded entirely by Brin.

The airship will measure more than 600 feet. Sources say Brin pictures the airship delivering goods and food on humanitarian missions, as well as being an "air yacht" for the billionaire's friends and family.

Brin also spends his money on a variety of thrill-seeking hobbies.

Brin is a lover of roller hockey, ultimate Frisbee, gymnastics, and high-flying trapeze. He has been spotted at advanced trapeze classes at the Circus Warehouse in New York City, which costs $1,760 per month.

Page has been known to kite board — sometimes with Richard Branson.

Brin pays 47 workers' salaries, who all work for him and his family — including ex-bankers who manage his philanthropy and finances, a fitness coordinator, a yacht captain, an archivist, and a photographer.

For these two 46-year-olds, the combined net worth of more than $126 billion is a far cry from their humble beginnings in the garage in Menlo Park where it all began.

On February 28, Axel Springer, Business Insider's parent company, joined 31 other media groups and filed a $2.3 billion suit against Google in Dutch court, alleging losses suffered due to the company's advertising practices.
