Trump supporters hold âemergency call to armsâ in Clearwater after assassination attempt
- Nina Moske Times staff
Dozens of Donald Trump supporters flocked to downtown Clearwater on Sunday for an âemergency call to armsâ flag-waving event after a failed assassination attempt on the former president and presumptive GOP presidential nominee.
âIt galvanized people,â Samuel Hutkin said Sunday afternoon as fellow Trump fans clad in red, white and blue crowded Court Street outside the courthouse.
âItâs like he shot at them,â Hutkin, 56, said of Trumpâs supporters. âItâs like he tried to extinguish us all.â
At a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, Trump left bloodied but âsafeâ after a bullet pierced his right ear. A former fire chief attending the rally was killed, and two others were critically injured.
The gunman fired multiple shots into the crowd from a nearby building before he was killed by the Secret Service, authorities said.
Trump on Sunday morning wrote in a social media post, âWe will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness.â
At the Clearwater rally, supporters wore hats and shirts decorated with Trumpâs name and face. They waved large American flags toward oncoming traffic. They clutched signs that read âFIGHT DEMOCRAT TYRANNYâ and âDrain the Swamp.â
A cacophony of car horns and âUSAâ chants rang through the surrounding streets.
Penny Atwell Jones of Clearwater organized the event, which she described on social media early Sunday as a âcall to arms emergency flag wave.â Jones, 81, who has held pro-Trump flag-waving events in the past, could not be reached for comment after the event.
âIt brought a lot of fear,â Hutkin said of the violence against Trump. âGod forbid if he was killed, youâre talking about a civil war possibility, and maybe thatâs what people wanted.â
Hutkin, president of the Clearwater Beach Association, said he has attended past flag-waving rallies and attends a Run for Their Lives event in support of Israeli hostages in Gaza every Sunday. He clutched an American flag in one hand and an Israeli flag in the other.
Hutkin said past presidents who have been assassinated or whose lives have been threatened âwere actually the best ones.â

Steve Simon of Clearwater brandished a Trump banner at the event.
âI want to make America great again, and I donât like assassination attempts on my candidate,â said Simon, who declined to give a reporter his age.
In the parking lot beside the event, bumper stickers denounced Biden and endorsed Trump. One read âBiden has dementia.â Another said, âTRUMP PENCE 2020âł with the former vice presidentâs name scratched out. A man walked around the crowded lot taking pictures of license plates.
Many at the rally declined to speak with the Tampa Bay Times. A woman walked from corner to corner shouting into a microphone, âThe liberal media are here! Donât speak to them!â
Jude Zentmeyer, 77, of Dunedin sported tennis shoes that read âDefund the media.â
Local and national leaders from across the political spectrum condemned Saturdayâs violence.
President Joe Biden said on X, formerly known as Twitter, âThereâs no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.â
Bidenâs campaign is grappling with how to manage the fallout as the president continues his reelection bid. Moments after the shooting, the campaign said it was pausing all outbound communications and pulling television advertisements.
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, a Democrat, said on X Saturday , âI am sickened by todayâs violence at a political rally in PA. I am praying for Donald Trump and his family, as well as any innocent victims. America is better than this.â

Music and concerts, music and concerts | what to know if you’re headed to the minnesota yacht club festival, gwen stefani, alanis morissette and red hot chili peppers are headlining.
![Set-up continues for the Yacht Club Festival at Harriet Island in St. Paul on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. The two-day music festival starts Friday afternoon and features Gwen Stafani, Alanis Morissette and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, among others. For the first time in a dozen years, St. Paul’s Harriet Island Regional Park will host a major rock and pop music festival, dubbed the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival, on Friday and Saturday.
Headlined by Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morissette and Red Hot Chili Peppers, the festival (which despite its name has nothing to do with yacht rock) is promoted by C3 Presents, an Austin, Texas, company that’s also behind Austin City Limits Music Festival, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience and the modern-day Lollapalooza. C3 was the largest independent promoter in the world until Live Nation bought a controlling stake in the company in 2014.
Organizers expect to attract more than 30,000 concertgoers each day.
While the Irish Fair of Minnesota calls Harriet Island home each August, music festivals have had a rough go on the site. The original Lollapalooza (back when it was a traveling festival) landed on the site in 1991, 1992 and 1994, but flooding forced the fest to move to the late St. Paul Civic Center in 1993.
Live Nation attempted to establish a new annual event, the River’s Edge Music Festival, in 2012. Despite big-name headliners Tool and the Dave Matthews Band, the festival didn’t attract enough paying customers to convince the concert promoting giant to return for a second year.
Here’s what folks headed to the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival need to know:
As of Wednesday afternoon, tickets were still available at a number of price points, starting at $135 for one day general admission (or $255 for two days) all the way up to platinum tickets for $925 ($1,395 for two days), which include a number of perks including free food and drinks, front-of-stage viewing and access to an air-conditioned lounge. See minnesotayachtclubfestival.com for details.
Many of the general admission and general admission plus tickets are sold out, but there are verified resale tickets available, some at lower prices than face value.
Getting there
There are two entrances to the festival. The main entrance is at Harriet Island Boulevard and South Wabasha Street, while the west entrance is on West Water Street between Bidwell Street and Plato Boulevard.
There is no on-site parking at the festival, but its website lists numerous downtown St. Paul parking lots that are a 10- to 16-minute walk from the site. Several Metro Transit buses stop a half-mile from Harriet Island. The rideshare drop off is at 49 E. Fillmore Ave. The festival promises “ample bike parking” located near the two entrances.
What is allowed on site
Feel free to bring: Small clutch purses and fanny packs (6” x 9” or smaller) with no more than one pocket, all other bags must be clear and smaller than 12” x 6” x 12”, empty hydration packs and reusable water bottles, strollers, frisbees, binoculars, blankets, basic cameras (no detachable lenses or other accessories), sunscreen in non-aerosol containers (3.4 ounces or less), personal-sized hand sanitizer and factory sealed Naloxone/Narcan kits.
What isn’t allowed
Pretty much everything you would think, including outside food and beverage, coolers, aerosol containers, umbrellas, chairs, wagons, skateboards, drones, fireworks and illegal substances.
Concertgoers must wear securely fastened wristbands that are available at the box office. Wristbands can be activated online to add an emergency contact and to use for cashless transactions (with a pin number). Wristbands that are damaged, lost or stolen can be replaced by the original purchaser one time only for $20. Patrons can leave and reenter at will up until 7 p.m. each day.
There is a guest services tent that has earplugs and a lost and found. Free hydration stations are located throughout the site. Lockers are available to rent for $25 each day or $48.50 for both.

Doors open at 12:30 p.m. There are two stages, with staggered performances that do not overlap.
Friday’s schedule includes: Gully Boys (1-2 p.m.), Harbor and Home (2-2:40 p.m.), Morgan Wade (2:40-3:40), Michigander (3:40-4:40), Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (4:40-5:40), Durry (5:40-6:40), Gwen Stefani (6:45-8), The Head and the Heart (8-9) and Alanis Morissette (9-10:30).

Russia plotted to assassinate the CEO of a German arms firm making weapons for Ukraine as the Kremlin ramps up its covert campaign against the West
- Russia plotted to assassinate an executive of a German armaments firm, CNN reported.
- The reported target was Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov rejected the CNN report.
![yachtsman arms menu Insider Today](https://www.businessinsider.com/public/assets/BI/US/logos/newsletters/insider-today-logo.png)
US intelligence helped thwart a Russian plot to kill the CEO of a German arms firm that has made munitions and military equipment for Ukraine, according to reports.
Russia planned to kill Armin Papperger, the CEO of Rheinmetall , which has made artillery shells, tanks, and other military equipment for Ukraine during the country's battle against Russian forces, CNN reported, citing five US and Western officials familiar with the situation.
German security services were able to foil the plot by providing Papperger with extra security after receiving a tip-off from US intelligence, the report said.
Papperger was one of a number of defense industry executives that Russia had planned to kill, the unnamed sources said, the report added.
According to the German publication Der Spiegel, the main reason for the Russian plot was Rheinmetall's plan to create a tank factory in Ukraine while building up the local arms industry.
Related stories
"It is very hard for us to comment on reports by various news media that don't contain any serious arguments and are based on some anonymous sources," Peskov said, per Russia's Tass news agency . "All this is presented in the style of fake stories. One can't treat such reports seriously."
German politicians have reacted with shock and anger to the CNN report, with foreign minister Annalena Baerbock telling reporters at a NATO summit that Russia is "waging a hybrid war of aggression."
Analysts say that Russia is stepping up campaigns to destabilize the West using covert methods, including arson plots, interfering with airline GPS signals, and pushing disinformation.
"We're seeing sabotage, we're seeing assassination plots, we're seeing arson. We're seeing things that have a cost in human lives," a senior NATO official told reporters earlier this week, per CNN. "I believe very much that we're seeing a campaign of covert sabotage activities from Russia that have strategic consequences."
According to experts who spoke to Business Insider earlier this year, Russia is seeking to internally weaken NATO members as part of a plan to undermine support for Ukraine.
