- Yachting in Turkey: a comprehensive guide
Tired of conventional sailing destinations like Croatia , Greece or Italy ? Head to Turkey — the local charter companies are professional with a diverse range of boats, the marinas are modern but less expensive than in the Mediterranean, and due to stable weather conditions, the sailing season lasts from April until the end of the year. And when you drop anchor, you can explore the sights, sample the excellent cuisine or go snorkelling to discover the vibrant underwater life.
Most sailors agree that sailing conditions in Turkey are comparable to those in Greece. So you won't have to be concerned about encountering anything too out of the ordinary.
Turkey is a country that spans both Europe and Asia, with the larger 'Asian' part (historically Anatolia ) lying on the Asia Minor peninsula, bordered to the south by the Mediterranean Sea , to the west by the Aegean Sea , and to the north by the Black Sea . It is separated from the smaller European part, sometimes called East Thrace , by the Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus Strait and the Dardanelles. For sailors, this beautiful country offers over 500 islands and over 7,000 km of coastline to sail, anchor, swim or simply sunbathe on deck. The most popular destinations are the Aegean Riviera and the southern coast, especially Antalya . Because the Aegean Riviera lies virtually right above the Greek Dodecanese , you can also easily visit the islands of Rhodes, Kos,...
Weather and climate in Turkey
From May to November, the weather conditions are perfect for sailing which makes for a longer season than in the Mediterranean. Some sailors even head to Turkey in early December or early spring, but the most attractive months for sailing are October and November when the weather is stable, the sun is shining and the sea is still pleasant enough to take a dip. In spring and autumn, the temperature on the Aegean coast tends to be around 25 °C, with it being at least five degrees higher in the summer months.
A specific feature of the region are the north to northwesterly Meltemi winds which are largely in the southern part of the country. In season, the Meltemi is normally 2–4 degrees Beaufort and can be well utilised for sailing. Occasionally, however, it produces gusts of around 7 degrees Beaufort and that's not much fun.
In the open sea, the Meltemi causes unpleasant swells, so keep that in mind when you plan your route. Generally speaking, the M eltemi tends to be weaker in the morning and mid-morning , stronger in the afternoon and evening, and dies down at night with a night breeze occasionally taking its place. It's a good idea to allow for this in your daily schedule — set sail early in the morning and anchor in the afternoon to indulge in other activities, such as swimming, hiking, sightseeing, etc.

Sailing infrastructure and practices on the Turkish coast
The charter companies here work great and you don't have to worry about unprofessionalism or finding your boat in bad condition. One interesting characteristic of this region is that it offers an abundance of owner-operated boats to charter — this is no cause for concern either, as they are usually in good condition and meticulously maintained.
Bodrum Marina
From the modern marinas in Bodrum, you can easily reach Kos
Turkey's harbours and marinas are comparable in quality and service to those in Western Europe. The nicest and newest of them are located in the area between Istanbul and Antalya. We recommend the Bodrum Marina , where you'll find luxury yachts, gulet berths and maybe even be lucky enough to catch the start of a yacht regatta. Turgutreis Marina , 20 km from Bodrum, also has an excellent reputation. From Bodrum, you can easily sail to the Greek islands (Kos is just a stone's throw away). However, sailing to another country's waters does have its own specifics, which we'll talk about later.
Göcek in the Gulf of Fethiye: start point to the southern Turkish coast
Göcek in the Gulf of Fethiye makes the perfect starting point for the Turkish Riviera, where several excellent marinas are to be found. The region is known for its pleasant Mediterranean climate, mountainous landscape and amazing ancient monuments. Plus, the coast lined with countless bays and jagged coves simply invites exploration. If you head south, go around the coast to reach Antalya.
YACHTING.COM TIP: Caution! It is strictly forbidden to discharge your sewage tank (black water) into the waters of Turkey. By law, every boat here is obliged to empty the sewage tank at least once per stay at an official pump. At check-in, you should be given an electronic card called a "Blue Card" which monitors the amount of wastewater deposited ashore. Don't forget to use it as it is checked carefully and you risk a high fine.

Anchoring at harbours and bays in Turkey
As we have mentioned, Turkey's marinas are well-equipped but you'll always find the staff extremely helpful and accommodating, even at the smaller ones. "The harbours — both at the marinas and restaurants jetties — were a pleasant surprise. Everywhere people are there to help you and most of the time they are already waiting for you on a dinghy. When the crew didn't quite have the confidence, we often saw them take over the helm and drive to the spot themselves or use their dinghy to push the boat to the jetty where other helpers jumped on and got the whole boat perfectly moored". The locals don't ask for anything in return, but it's always nice to give them something or at least offer them a beer.
When returning the boat on Friday or Saturday at the end of the charter, at some marinas, for example in Göcek, they even require you to radio ahead so they can send an assistant to your boat to moor it for you.
Mooring in the bays and coves is almost universally done at anchor or anchoring with a line to the shore. In some of them, there are mooring bollards or rings on the rock that you can use to tie up. What may come as a bit of an unpleasant surprise, however, is the great depth in the bays that can make dropping anchor problematic.
If you want to stop off for a short while, use the jetties at the restaurants because if you have a meal, you can moor there for free.

Sailing boats for charter in turkish marinas.
The range of boats in Turkey may not be as wide as it is in other destinations, such as Croatia, but there is something for every sailor — from beginner sailors to those who prefer a sportier sailing experience.
There are classic Bavaria cruisers , elegant Oceanis and comfortable Dufour boats. The beautiful First 50 also caught our eye . From our own personal experience, we highly recommend the Dufour 382 Grand Large (the Calypso ) , which is privately owned and in perfect condition. Also worth mentioning is the Sun Loft yacht, a monohull with an interior layout reminiscent of a catamaran — the Sun Loft 47 is a great choice.
A well-maintained boat is the foundation of a good holiday
Catamarans in Turkey
There are a large number of spacious Fountain Pajot catamarans on offer, such as the Fountain Pajot 45, the Bali cat space or less traditional brands such as the Lipari 41 , Belize 43 .
Motor boats
Of course, in addition to sail-powered boats, a range of motor boats can be rented in Turkey. For example, the Azimut 55 or Azimut 75 Flybridge will enable you to cruise the local seas at incredible speeds. Or indulge in some real luxury with the Maiora 24 superyacht.
Turkish gulets
Gulets are a Turkish speciality. These are ships that resemble pirate ships or ships from a bygone era . Most of them are original pieces that can't be found at sea anywhere else. So if you're looking for a nice wooden double or triple mast, give it a try. We recommend the Golden Princess , Santa Maria , Elifim 11 , Perla Del Mar or the Serenad .
The gulet Santa Maria is based in Bodrum Marina.
What is a must-see when sailing in Turkey
Where to head in Turkey? There are countless beautiful spots to discover but it's all about choosing the best ones for sailing, anchoring and having the best experience on land. Most charters depart in Göcek , Marmaris or Fethiye on the Turkish Riviera and they are all definitely well worth a visit.
A town considered by many sailors to be the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. See for yourself at the town's Kadinlar Plaji beach, in the historic streets, the pine forest or at one of the 6 marinas located here. Göcek is also surrounded by 12 beautiful islands to cruise.
Lying within an area of lush greenery, you'll find a fantastic marina in this city as well as a museum of ancient artefacts dating from 3000 BC. Modern Fethiye is located right in the heart of ancient Lycia, with a large number of rock tombs still preserved to this day. It is definitely worth a visit.
Lycian tombs in the ancient city of Kaunos, near Dalyan in the Turkish province of Mugla
Bodrum is a tourist hotspot, holding numerous regattas, with luxury yachts and gulets at anchor. In addition, the harbour has a beautiful old town — be sure to check out the magnificent Bodrum Castle and the local market.
Here you'll find vast picturesque sandy beaches that stretch for 5 kilometres. In the evening, you can witness a breathtaking sunset.
Originally a fishing village, Marmaris has gradually become a popular tourist resort. Its incredibly long coastal promenade (some 11 km) takes you past restaurants, bars, marinas and hotels. But if you'd like a bit more privacy, leave your boat in one of the smaller marinas that only take 5 to 7 boats — there are toilets, showers and refreshments there, and an atmosphere much more charming than that of the large marinas. Tranquillity can also be found on the nearby Bozburun peninsula, at the beaches of Icmeler or Kumlubük, or in the bays of Serce Limani or Bozuk Bükü. On your way from Marmaris to Fethiye, be sure to check out Ölüdeniz, supposedly Turkey's most beautiful beach.
Laguna Oludeniz — supposedly the most beautiful beach in Turkey
In Turkey's most famous tourist destination, you'll discover plenty of hotels, restaurants and clubs, as well as historical sights and gorgeous long beaches. As Antalya is also surrounded by mountains, the scenery is truly breathtaking.
The panorama of Antalya is really wonderful
Recommendations for trips inland
For travel lovers , we definitely recommend taking a trip inland. The most interesting places include the famous Pamukkale (incredible white travertine terraces formed by hot natural springs) or the burial mound from 62 BC — Mount Nemrut , a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Stone heads of the eagle, King Antiochus and the goddess Tyche at Mount Nemrut, Kahta, Turkey
Can you sail from Turkey to Greece?
Many sailors wonder whether it is actually possible to cross from Turkey to Greece by charter boat , particularly to the nearby islands of Kos and Rhodes.
However, the question is not a simple one and there is no definitive answer. In practice, of course, you can simply take the boat and sail it across the ocean, but not all charter companies allow this crossing. In fact, some boats only have insurance that covers one country and not international waters or abroad.
So, the most important thing is to find out in advance whether a particular boat can sail to Greece from Turkish ports . If this is something you'd like to do, simply tell our sales team when booking the boat and they will check and arrange everything with the charter company for you. When crossing, you must next ch eck your captain's license (whether it allows sailing in both areas) and especially your insurance. When you rent the boat, the charter company staff will then tell you on the spot the exact procedure for checking out and checking in when leaving and entering Greek/Turkish waters.
When you decide to sail from country to country, expect some time-consuming formalities. Since the 2014 migration crisis, controls have tightened slightly. Boats smuggling illegal refugees are not your primary concern, but on the other hand, you may encounter them in the part of Turkey closest to Greece.
Prices and currency in Turkey
In Turkey, payments are made in Turkish Lira (TRY) and we recommend exchanging money in advance as you can't rely on paying for everything by card during your holiday. Although the big supermarkets do accept cards, restaurants do not.
Prices here are generally lower than in Europe, both for food and for mooring in marinas. For example, you can pay up to 50% less for a marina than in other destinations, such as Croatia. You'll also save considerably on mooring fees, as most of the time anchoring in a bay is free of charge . However, alcoholic beverages are more expensive , about 25% more than European prices, and because Turkey is a Muslim country you can't get hold of it everywhere.
Shops have fixed prices, so there is no haggling. But you can utilise your bargaining skills at the market and bazaar — here haggling skills are a basic requirement and the Turks love it. If you don't haggle over the price at all, the locals will be deeply disappointed.
If you want to save money on food, eat at the street stalls. A delicious kebab will set you back less than 100 lira (under 4 euros). Fresh fruit and vegetables are worth buying at the markets, where they are at their freshest. In Fethiye, for example, fresh produce can be bought for a fraction of the price at the market, but it does sell out in the afternoon.
Getting to the Turkish coast
There are several airports in Turkey, but not all of them are located on the coast. There are direct flights almost daily from major cities to Istanbul or Antalya where you can transfer to get to Bodrum, Dalaman, Izmir or Ankara.
From the airport, you can easily get to the port by taxi (the most expensive option) or by bus (the cheapest). A great mid-range option is a dolmuş — a shared minibus which runs along a predetermined route.
Dolmuş in Marmaris.
YACHTING.COM TIP: It takes about 20– 25 minutes by car or bus to get from Dalaman airport to the port at Göcek, but it takes up to 3 hours to get to Marmaris port. From Bodrum airport, it's 40 minutes to Bodrum port and 2.5 hours to Marmaris port.
5 leisure activities while sailing the Turkish Riviera
1. windsurfing: around bodrum and antalya.
Windsurfing is popular here and the area around Bodrum and Antalya offers ideal conditions. It's possible to rent equipment and even if you are a beginner, you'll find plenty of schools with instructors.
Windsurfing in Bodrum
2. Recreational scuba diving off Gallipoli: the wrecks of warships
Although sport diving is forbidden in Turkey, recreational scuba diving isn't and you'll discover plenty of dive sites to admire the fauna and flora. As a result, there are a large number of diving schools . Off the Gallipoli peninsula, you'll discover underwater shipwrecks from World War II, and archaeological sites at Bodrum. But no matter where you go, you'll find an abundance of underwater life.
3. Fishing in coastal waters
Sailors who like fishing are in for a treat. The sea in Turkey is abundant in fish and you can land some really big ones. Fishing is recommended in the evening or early morning in deeper waters (30 metres or more). A secret trick of the local fishermen is to buy small shrimps in the market to use as bait. Alternatively, cut up a chicken breast, salt it and leave it in the sun for a few hours. This dries out the meat slightly and makes it tougher, so the big fish don't bite it off immediately — as they have to chew at it more, they're easier to catch on the hook.
YACHTING.COM TIP: Beware of fish with spines, they are usually poisonous. If any of the crew gets stung by one, it helps to soak the affected area in hot water, and it is always advisable to seek medical attention. Check out our article on the dangerous creatures that inhabitant the Greek seas to find out all about the 8 most poisonous you can encounter there .
4. Rafting on the Coruh River
Turkey has long, deep and wild rivers surrounded by beautiful countryside. Rafting is possible on the Manavgat, Dragon, Barhal and Coruh rivers. The latter is even ranked one of the ten best rivers for rafting in the world.
5. Golf in the Belek area
Feel like topping off a day's cruising with a round of golf ? Surprising as it may seem to some, there are actually a large number of golf courses around the coast. Highlights include the National Golf Club in Belek, Antalya . Interestingly, Istanbul Golf Club was one of the first golf courses in continental Europe.
Are you tempted by Turkey? Then let's give it a try! I'll be happy to arrange a boat for you.

Marinas on the Marmara Coast Most marinas are first class with extensive technical support, repair and various services. Some of the finest marinas are Atakoy Marina, Kalamis and Yalova. However, the first class marinas require more expenses for overnight stay. Fewer expenses can be expected in small harbors, but still with quays with water and electricity.

Whether you’re after a journey into historic sites, a spot of tranquility, a touch of water sports, or simply some shopping, Turkey has something for everyone.
Turkey’s history stretches back over 5,000 years, and represents a unique blend of eastern and western cultures, boasting a rich archaeological legacy left over from classical civilizations and Islamic Middle East, with several locations of cultural significance now designated UNESCO Heritage sites.
Its strategic position between Europe and Asia has seen it act as both a conduit and barrier simultaneously between the two continents of Asia and Europe over the years. Over the centuries Turkey became more secular and Western-orientated, culminating in a reform of the Turkish language.
As a popular destinations for yacht charters in the East Mediterranean, there should be ample to choose from when it comes to crewed yachts for charter in Turkey. If you’re unsure about whether you want to book a gulet, motor or sailing yacht for your luxury getaway, there are a few things you should consider first.
Gulet Yacht Charters in Turkey
Making up the majority of the fleet in this country, a luxury gulet in Turkey can provide guests with an excellent crewed charter experience to explore secluded coves and ancient ruins in a more cost-effective manner, with a vast amount of deck space on board. Expect capped air condition times, specific hours of cruising included in the price and lower APA costs as you are mostly in bays, but expect higher fees for ports.
Motor Yacht Charters in Turkey
Guests can also select from a fleet of luxury motor yachts in Turkey, mostly located in Bodrum, Göcek , Fethiye , Marmaris , and Bozburun . Complete with larger interior volumes, more powerful engines as well as better amenities on offer, it's a sumptuous alternative to gulets. However, this is usually paired with higher charter costs.
Sailing yacht charters in Turkey
As for Turkey sailing yacht rentals with plenty available throughout summer. A combination of clement weather, clear skies and plenty of showstopping anchorages create great sailing conditions in the region.

- For luxury sailing and gulet yacht rentals in Turkey, prices can go from $21,013 to $147,091 weekly, plus expenses

related articles
The majority of yacht charters in Turkey commence in the country’s southwestern marinas thanks to the excellent provision of facilities, unparalleled scenery, and convenient location to both regional and international airports. Vibrant Bodrum , the picturesque fishing village of Göcek , or the enchanting Çeşme , Marmaris , Fethiye , or Antalya are all chartering favorites.
For a less obvious starting point, you could choose the tranquil bliss of the Bosphorus strait near Istanbul . However, keep in mind you will have fewer charter options available in this area.
sample itineraries
Bodrum and Marmaris are popular points to end a Turkey yacht charter, thanks to their excellent array of facilities and close proximity to international airports.
The Turkish Riviera (also charmingly known as the Turquoise Coast thanks to its vividly-colored waters) comprising southwestern destinations like Fethiye , Marmaris , and Bodrum, is by far the most popular area for chartering.
Fethiye Yacht Charters
Many begin a yacht charter in Fethiye , thanks to its convenient location to Marmaris and Bodrum in the north. Dominated by soaring cedar trees and pine-carpeted cliffs that tumble into clear blue waters, it's flecked with archaeological ruins and uninhabited islands, with plenty of bays to take toys for a spin. Fethiye yacht charters are also a great base for visiting one of Turkey’s most jaw-dropping beautiful beaches, Ölüdeniz (Blue Lagoon).
Göcek Yacht Charters
Göcek yacht rentals have been long adored by international jet setters. This fishing village located on a private bay is the entry to undiscovered coves and more than 12 islands of unmatched beauty. Boasting six well-equipped marinas (including two for superyachts) it’s brimming with cafes and tavernas. Before going off-shore, stop by for a traditional mezze platter or sip a cocktail as the sun's apricot glow falls on its shorefront promenades.
Marmaris Yacht Charters
A Marmaris yacht charter gives guests the best of both worlds. A superyacht haven, this buzzing town is a hub of activity: with a bustling grand bazaar, throngs of restaurants, bars, and shops lining cobblestone streets, and paragliders filling the skies above. But this is in dramatic contrast to the rest of the stunning Carian Coast which is within easy reach of Marmaris : secluded bays and quaint villages are dotted all along the Bozburun Peninsula .
Bodrum Yacht Charters
Why are Bodrum yacht rentals so popular? It's a vibrant coastal city humming with nightlife and home to a large glittering marina as well as the landmark St. Peter’s Castle. Unquestionably a glamorous beach hangout, hip restaurants and bars sheltered by palm trees frame the chic Yalikavak marina.
During a Bodrum yacht charter, be sure to anchor at nearby Türkbükü Bay for a taste of the “Saint-Tropez of Turkey" and dance under a canopy of stars. Cruise further afield and you’ll reach the olive-grove covered Datça Peninsula , as well as the Dalyan- Ekincik Bay, revered for its windsurfing opportunities.
Surrounded by the Mediterranean , Aegean , Marmara , and Black Seas , it should come as no surprise that Turkey is home to a vast array of world-class marinas perfect for gulet or yacht chartering. It should be noted that whilst the Black Sea is replete with deep valleys, verdant mountains, and crater lakes, it does not usually feature on a typical yacht itinerary. That’s largely down to its wetter and colder climate, leading to few well-developed marinas. As a result, it does not feature in our list below.
For yacht charters on Turkey's Mediterranean Coast:
- Kaş marina : recently developed and has slip capacity for 450 yachts.
- Setur Finike marina: situated in the stunning historic city of Finike, with a 320 slip capacity.
- Setur Antalya marina : renowned superyacht marina, slip capacity reaches 235 yachts.
For yacht charters on Turkey's Aegean Coast:
- Yalıkavak marina : award-winning with 620-slip capacity, catering to every possible yachting need.
- Çeşme marina: located in the illustrious port village steeped with history, it can accommodate 400 slips up to 80m.
- Skopea marina : regarded as the original superyacht marina, it accommodates up to 80 yachts, with 110m yachts tied to a jetty.
For yacht charters in Turkey's Marmara Region:
- Ataköy marina: just outside of Istanbul's city center and known for its nightlife. 700 moorings up to 40m.
- Istanbul marina : located in the heart of Turkey, with 720 moorings for yachts up to 60m.
- West Istanbul marina: highly acclaimed, it caters to 600 slips up to 95m.
The Turquoise Coast is unquestionably Turkey's anchorage paradise, studded with emerald islands with golden bays lapped by beautiful blue-green waters begging to be explored. Here is our pick of some of the best anchorages in Turkey:
- Cleopatra Bay (Manastir) : located a stone’s throw from the beautiful town of Fethiye, this glorious sequestered bay yields a bounty of emerald-clear waters atop ancient baths, perfect for anchoring and an afternoon kayak.
- Fethiye : This port city is known for its exquisite natural harbor, vast swathes of deep golden sand beaches and stunning blue waters. The area also boasts an array of ancient rock tombs dating back to 4th Century BC.
- Kalcan (Lycian Coast) : a gorgeous sheltered bay set within a charming fishing village against a backdrop of rugged mountainous scenery. Step ashore and explore this tranquil haven, which also boasts a plethora of excellent dining options.
- Kekova (Antalya province) : this beautiful small island near Kas is the ideal spot to drop anchor for the night, which also happens to be the site of a rather unique ancient sunken city. Although a popular hotspot for tourists during the day, if you aim to arrive around 5pm, you’ll have the place to yourselves.

Turkey Yacht Charter Q&A
For booking most yacht charters, a completed charter agreement and 50% of the charter fee is required upfront as a deposit to secure your chosen yacht. This is usually payable once the contract has been signed
Turkey is an increasingly popular superyacht destination, so yacht charter guests can rest assured that they will have boundless vessel options which will meet their budget criteria.
Whatever type of vessel you ultimately choose, one thing to keep track of are the additional costs not included in the yacht charter base rate. For example, VAT and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). This is usually 30% of the charter fee, and paid in advance. The APA covers expenses such as fuel, berthing, food and drinks, as well as any special requests.
However, gulet charters usually have lower APAs. For personalized advice please consult your yacht charter broker.
Not sure whether to pick a motor yacht, sailing yacht or gulet? Browse our site according to your chosen dates, number of guests, yacht type, features, and preferred onboard toys and we'll show you what's available and within your budget.
If you make a subsequent enquiry, a yacht charter broker will get in contact to provide you with a bespoke charter proposal.
Alternatively, get in touch with your yacht charter broker directly and they can research the best yacht for you in line with your requirements.
The vast majority of yacht charters commence in southwest Turkey, with the most popular superyacht locations being Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye, Göcek and Antalya.
Unlike many yacht charter destinations, you also have the option of a gulet charter in Turkey. It is well worth considering if it may be right for you. Benefits include lower APA costs and considerably wide decks onboard to lap up turquoise-tinged panoramas that surround you. However, capped fuel limits and air conditioning times are common to gulet yacht charters.
Yes, it is possible to visit Greece on a luxury Turkey yacht charter. However, additional VAT and fees may apply if venturing outside Turkish waters. It is also worth noting that for convenience, it can often be better to visit Turkey and then Greece or vice versa, rather than zig-zag between the two. That's because you will need to provide documentation every time you cross borders which can be time-consuming.
For precise details regarding fees and routes to Greece, consult your charter broker.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.
Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.
Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.
Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.
We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.

Sailing in Turkey - Geography
Turkey, the size of France and Germany together, is located between Europe, Asia and the Middle East. It’s coastline runs 5,176 miles (8,330 km) with the Black Sea to the north, the Aegean Sea to the west and the Mediterranean to the west, plus the Bosphorus, connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. The capital of Turkey, Istanbul (or known as Constantinople before), located right on the spot – dividing or connecting Europe and Asia, is a true wealth of the Byzantine Christian and Muslim (Ottoman) Turkish heritage. It is a delightful conglomerate of numerous tourist attraction: mosques and churches, palaces and castles, Turkish bathes and bazaars. Istanbul is a pure reflection of fast-changing nation. Contrasts between old and new, high-rise modernisation and lack of adequate essentials are merely shocking. But surprisingly this striking feature enchants even more travellers to this region. Origins of the Turks The Turkish people are descendants from the tribes of Central Asian nomads or the Turkmen.
The history of Turkey is as long as that of mankind. Known as Anatolia, or as Asia Minor before, this land has seen so many ups and downs of many great civilisations ( the Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines an Ottomans) that it is hard to squeeze it in any narration. In the middle of the 11th century, the tribe invaded Persia, and when Baghdad fell in 1055, the powerful Great Seljuk Sultanate was declared as the centre of the Islamic world. But in 1243 it was defeated by the Mongols. During 13 and 14th centuries many Christians converted to Islam, because the Mongols offered reduced taxation for Muslims. The Mongols ruled Anatolia till 1335, then Osman founded a dynasty known as the Ottomans and created one of the most powerful empires. By the mid of 1500s, the Ottoman sultan was the central figure of Muslim world. In the 1870s, reformist movement known as the Young Ottomans began to push for a constitutional monarchy. In 1912 and 1913 the empire lost most of its remaining European possessions in the Balkan War. By 1918 only the heartland of Anatolia remained of the Ottoman Empire. In 1923 the Turkish Republic was proclaimed with the First Constitution implemented. During World War II, Turkey pursued peaceful policy and remained neutral.
Most of Turkey’s population (76 million people) follows Islam. The most devoted pray 5 times a day in mosques, while some Turkish do not go to mosques at all. Approximately 130,000 are non-Muslims, including Greek and Armenian Orthodox.
The Turkish language uses the Latin alphabet. But their greatly animated body language can deliver as much a message as a speech itself. The traditional segregation of the sexes is very noticeable. You may often come across groups of men sitting around smoking, drinking endless cups of tea, playing cards or dominos. Numerous festivals, where food and drinks play a central role, demonstrate sincere hospitality and generosity. The age-old Turkish traditions demand absolute respect of elders and cherish their children as national treasures.
The outcome of this country’s long and sometimes violent past reflects itself in its art and architecture and also alters or introduces its traditions and customs. Many peoples, among them Jews, Russians, Armenians, Greek and others have played an important part in Turkey ‘s complex history. It can be seen in mosaics and frescoes, colourful tile work, city walls, fortress and biblical sights.
Customs and traditions.
The Turkish customs, passed from generation to generation, are well-preserved in contemporary life. The Islamic tradition to circumcise boys from the ages of seven and ten is a very lavish occasion. All men over the age of 20 are required to serve in the military forces, which is considered to be a crucial step to manhood. Wedding festivities, which take a lot of preparations of cooking, dressing and dancing are one of the most impressive rituals. Traditional dress as a colourful designed costume, always goes with decorative scarves (both for men and women), dyed with a plant extracts. The traditional crafts are mostly man-made: copper and brass ware; woodwork; hand-printed textiles; quilts, etc. For example, needle lace is an intricate floral design crocheted in silk.
Turkey is a large territory for variety of landscapes and geographical diversity: seascapes, soft beaches and rolling mountains along the Mediterranean coast and deep lush forests of the Black Sea, with vast bare areas in the eastern part. About one quarter of Turkey is covered with forest: pine, spruce and cedar, as well as deciduous trees. 80 % of the country is in active tectonic zone, and earthquakes are frequent. Cappadocia is a must see geological miracle. The hardened volcanic ash (the tuff) was weathered away, creating some majestic formations. Earlier in age even cities were constructed underground, because the softness of the tuff made it easy to build different dwellings underground.
Flora and Fauna
Turkey can surprise any naturalist with abundance of bird life (more than 440 species), larger mammals and diversity of plants. Some of this unspoiled countryside zones are declared as national parks. Each area presents different flora and fauna. The forests of the eastern provinces are habitat for bears, wolves or jackals. The Mediterranean coast grows roses, orchids, lilies, daffodils, etc. Wetlands are famous for water lilies and irises; while woodlands – peonies and jasmine.
Various range of mountains and coastal line of seaside correspondently influence climatic regions in Turkey. The Aegean and the Mediterranean will produce 84F (29C) in July and 48F (9C) in January. Winter is mostly a rainy season here. Annual precipitation in Antalya is 39 in, while the rainfall along the Black Sea is much heavier – 96 inches a year. The northeast has warm summers, but colder winters with temperatures of 16F (-9C). The central plateau has hot dry summers of 73F (23C) and chilly moist winters of 32F (0 C). The coastline of Turkey predictably delivers warm summers and mild winters, with mostly sunny days throughout the year. From May till the end of August it may be windy, but it never reaches its 25 Knots Mark. When going east the winds become weaker, thus more comfortable for sailing.
All national and regional holidays can be divided into 3 categories: Religious feasts celebrated by the Islamic people; festivities associated with events or people of historic significance; traditional festivals, usually tied with a seasonal theme. Turkey has four distinct seasons and different types of celebrations are spread accordingly. In spring there are Tulip Festival in April, Yunus Emre Culture and Art week in May, and Marmaris Race week or International Yachting Festival the 2nd week of May. In summer because of the high temperatures, there is nothing better than to be closer to the seaside. International swimming race is held near the Greek island of Meis. Kirkpinar Festival and Grease wrestling Championship is usually in the last week of June. Istanbul Music Festival is a well known event for opera, theatre and ballet lovers. Autumn is a harvesting season, no wonder there are so many festivals based on the crops: watermelon, grapes, etc. The still warm sea welcomes water sports enthusiasts. International Bodrum Cup Regatta is held in the third week of October, and limited only to few categories of wooden yachts. Race week (last week of October to first of Nov.) takes place in Marmaris and is supervised by the Turkish Sailing Federation. Second week of September will attract dance couples to six-day Tango Festival, also held in Marmaris. In winter the local museums and art galleries will give you a shelter from rain and snow. Although Christmas is ignored by the Turks, New Year’s Day is widely celebrated throughout Turkey. In the mid of January, it is worth visiting the ruined Roman theatre of Ephesus, where the Camel Wrestling Championship is held.
Conveniently surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea in the south, the Aegean Sea in the west and the Black Sea up north, it is no wonder that water sports, and especially sailing, are prevailing in this area. Besides, Turkey provides the longest sailing season in the Mediterranean. There are indeed a lot of advantages for sailors in this area. Secluded sandy bays and coves, lush forested hills, ruins of ancient dwellings – sometimes are hidden from explorers and can be discovered only by water. So, “12 Knots” will give you the opportunity to enjoy this paradise with bareboat or skippered yacht charter. Once you reach your destination - sunny weather, pristine beaches, balsamic waters – will create the most relaxing atmosphere for you. Turkey provides not only its picturesque scenery, but also upscale marinas, well- equipped with secure moorings and other useful facilities for yachts. They are well-located to make it easy to get provisions or meals at the restaurants.
One of the main yacht centres, located on the Bodrum peninsula, is a perfect spot for sailing or dinghy racing. The 15 century Castle, well visible from the harbour, houses a Museum of Underwater Archeology these days. Yalikavak, used to be a sponge-fishing port, is a good place to try local delicacies: sea beans and stuffed marrow flowers.
Marmaris, which used to be a quaint fishing village, set in a sheltered bay, is now a vibrant resort and can be easily compared to the Spanish Ibiza. Marmaris is another popular sailing and diving centre with Netsel Marina, as Turkey ‘s largest and most luxurious marinas, and several smaller ones as well. There is berthing for over 750 yachts up to 130 ft (40m) long. Marmaris is a safe anchorage with no underwater currents, sandbanks or rocks.
On the way from Bodrum to Marmaris you’ll come across Gocek, a small village with 5 well- equipped marinas. The public marinas have berth for above 350 boats with a further 200 berth available in a secluded private marina. The ruins of the Roman town of Lydae, with two mausoleums and a fort, can be visible at the tip of the peninsula.

ANKARA – Turkey's main opposition party retained its control over key cities and made huge gains elsewhere in Sunday's local elections, in a major upset to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had set his sights on retaking control of those urban areas.
With more than 90% of ballot boxes counted, incumbent Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, of the Republican People's Party, or CHP, was leading by a wide margin in Turkey's largest city and economic hub, according to the state-run Anadolu Agency. Mansur Yavas, the mayor of the capital, Ankara, retained his seat with a stunning 25-point difference over his challenger, the results indicated.

In all, the CHP won the municipalities of 36 of Turkey's 81 provinces, according to Anadolu, making inroads into many strongholds of Erdogan's party. It gained 37% of the votes nationwide, compared to 36% for the president's party, marking the CHP's greatest electoral victory since Erdogan came to power two decades ago.
Erdogan acknowledged the electoral setback in a speech delivered from the balcony of the presidential palace, saying his party had suffered “a loss of altitude” across Turkey. The people delivered a “message” that his party will “analyse” by engaging in “courageous” self-criticism, he said.
“Unfortunately, nine months after our victory in the May 28 elections, we could not get the result we wanted in the local election test,” Erdogan added. “We will correct our mistakes and redress our shortcomings.”
He vowed to press ahead with an economic program introduced last year that aims to combat inflation.
The vote was seen as a barometer of Erdogan’s popularity as he sought to win back control of key urban areas he lost to the opposition in elections five years ago. The CHP's victory in Ankara and Istanbul in 2019 had shattered Erdogan's aura of invincibility.
The main battleground for the 70-year-old Turkish president was Istanbul , a city of 16 million people where he was born and raised and where he began his political career as mayor in 1994.
The result came as a boost for the opposition, which was left divided and demoralized after a defeat to Erdogan and his ruling Islamic-oriented Justice and Development Party, or AKP, in last year’s presidential and parliamentary elections.
“The voters decided to establish a new political order in Turkey,” CHP leader Ozgur Ozel told a crowd of jubilant supporters. “Today, the voters decided to change the 22-year-old picture in Turkey and open the door to a new political climate in our country.”
A large crowd, meanwhile, gathered outside Ankara City Hall to celebrate Yavas’ victory. “Ankara is proud of you!” supporters chanted.
Sinan Ulgen, director of the Istanbul-based Edam think tank, said “the surprising outcome" was due to voters wanting to punish the ruling party over the “depth of an economic malaise.” Skyrocketing inflation has left many Turkish households struggling to afford basic goods.
AKP supporters opted to stay away from the ballot stations or voted for other parties, Ulgen said.
“Turnout was relatively low compared to past elections,” he said. “There were cross-party shifts in the vote, which did not happen in the nationals elections because of stronger ideological attachments. This time around the economy prevailed over identity.”
Some 61 million people, including more than a million first-time voters, were eligible to cast ballots for all metropolitan municipalities, town and district mayorships as well as neighborhood administrations.
Turnout was around 76%, according to the state-run Anadolu Agency, compared to 87% last year.
Some 594,000 security personnel were on duty across the country to ensure the vote goes smoothly. Nevertheless, one person was killed and 11 others hurt in the city of Diyarbakir where a dispute over the election of a neighborhood administrator turned violent, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported. At least six people were also injured in fighting that erupted in the nearby province of Sanliurfa.
“According to the data we have obtained, it seems our citizens’ trust in us, their faith in us has paid off,” Imamoglu said.
Imamoglu won 50.6% of the votes in Istanbul, while AKP candidate Murat Kurum, a former urbanization and environment minister, received 40.5%, according to Anadolu. Opinion polls had pointed to a close race between the two.
Imamoglu, a popular figure touted as a possible future challenger to Erdogan, ran without the support of some of the parties that helped him to victory in 2019. Both the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party and the nationalist IYI Party fielded their own candidates in the race.
A six-party opposition alliance that was led by CHP disintegrated after it failed to oust Erdogan in last year's election, unable to capitalize on the economic crisis and the government’s initially poor response to last year's devastating earthquake that killed more than 53,000 people.
Ulgen said the result has thrust Imamoglu into the role of possible leader of the opposition to challenge Erdogan for the presidency in 2028.
“This outcome has certainly been a watershed for Imamoglu,” he said. "He will emerge as the natural candidate of the opposition for the next round of presidential elections.
A new religious-conservative party, the New Welfare Party, or YRP, appeared to have attracted votes from AKP supporters who have been disillusioned with the government's handling of the economy.
In Turkey's mainly Kurdish-populated southeast, the DEM Party was on course to win many of the municipalities but it's unclear whether it would be allowed to retain them. In previous years, Erdogan’s government removed elected pro-Kurdish mayors from office for alleged links to Kurdish militants and replaced them with state-appointed trustees.
Analysts said a strong showing for Erdogan’s party would have hardened his resolve to usher in a new constitution — one that would reflect his conservative values and allow him to rule beyond 2028 when his current term ends.
Erdogan, who has presided over Turkey for more than two decades — as prime minister since 2003 and president since 2014 — has been advocating for a new constitution that would put family values at the forefront.
Kiper reported from Bodrum, Turkey.
