Viper F16 is a 16 ′ 4 ″ / 5 m catamaran sailboat designed by Greg Goodall and built by Australian High Performance Catamarans starting in 2010.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Spinnaker area: 17.5 m2 Intended to accomodate lighter crews, the VIPER fits into the Formula 16 and 104 racing categories and can be sailed single handed with spinnaker (uni rig) or double handed with twin trapeze, spinnaker and square top mainsail.

F16 Worlds 2024 confirmed for Gravedona, Italy

Although the F16 summerbreeze (Europeans) 2023 still needs to take place in French Centre Nautique de Bauduen at Lac de Sainte Croix,  from 16 to 20th of July, we are happy to announce the confirmation already of the 2024 event! So start planning!

In 2024 AVAL/CDV will be hosting the F16 Worlds from 21st till 26st of July.

F16 Summerbreeze 2023 confirmed to France!

We are happy to announce that the F16 Summerbreeze event has been confirmed to the French Centre Nautique de Bauduen at Lac de Sainte Croix.

Racing will take place from 16 to 20th of July.

More information will be confirmed later.

Thomas Koenig steps down as secretary

Dear F16 friends,

After being in engaged in the class for 7 years, first as President and lately as Secretary, Thomas Koenig steps down from his official function within the class.

Our worldwide community has grown over the years and worldwide racing was established. There are local races, Nationals, Continentals and Worlds and what is most important people do have fun sailing together. But all these things do not happen by accident. They happen because a bunch of engaged sailors manage the class successfully and today want to specially thanks Thomas for his engagement the last 7 years.

“ The F16 boats are among the mightiest beach catamarans on the planet and I enjoyed every minute as President and sailor. Those honorary appointments opened the door to a lot of friendships. But priorities change as life goes by and meanwhile there are other challenges and projects I will focus on. Ofcouse you will still see me on the F16 race course! ” – Thomas

At the same time we also want to launch a vacancy for Secretary of the F16 class and to join our great team to move the F16 class forward!

Summerbreeze 2021: organisational details

As the event will be close to paperless, we use an official digital notice board. Please find the relevant docs and notifications on:  Racing Rules of Sailing  .

There is an app available for Android and IOS, which has the notice board and can be used for hearing requests, protests and inquiries to the jury.

F16 Summerbreeze in Gravedona: registrations open

With the Notice Of Race now available and the registrations open the first international F16 event of 2021 is taking final shape.

Enjoy the waters of the Lake of Como from 16th till 22nd of July and subscribe now! Online registrations will help the organisation team to prepare in still challenging times.

Worlds and Europeans schedule swapped

With travel schedules being unclear, especially for sailors outside of EU the class has decided to change the Europeans and Worlds. We hope this will allow overseas sailors to participate in 2022 at the Worlds.

New tentative schedule: – From 19 till 23rd July 2021 the Europeans will take place at Lake of Como, Gravedona. – The Worlds will take place during the 133th Travemunde Woche in Travemunde, Germany: 22.-31.07.2022

The class and organizing club are on track for a succesfull Europeans coming July, the official registration will be announced soon if the travel situation in Europe becomes clear in the coming weeks.

Worlds and Europeans schedule known for 2021/2022

Being at confined at home seems to have it’s advantages as well! We are happy to announce that next to the venue for the 2021 Worlds in Gravedona, Italy, also the venue for the F16 Europeans in 2022 is confirmed in Travemunde, Germany!

Worlds in at Lake of Como, Gravedona: week of July 19th 2021. Europeans in during the 133th Travemunde Woche in Travemunde, Germany: 22.-31.07.2022

Keep in mind, we will look at the opportunity and feasibility to setup an informal F16 event from 19th to 24th of July 2020 if conditions allow.

In some countries signs of re-opening of the sailing waters are there, so have fun on the water soon, but most of all Stay Safe!

F16 worlds postponed

Dear F16 sailors,

Due to the current impact of the Corona virus, we have decided to postpone the F16 worlds to next year.

We have been in very close contact with the AVAL sailing club and based on the latest outcomes, it has been decided to postpone all the already scheduled events by 1 year. World in Como is thus rescheduled for the week of July 19th 2021. And Travemunde toward 2022.

Meanwhile, we will look at the opportunity and feasibility to setup an informal F16 event during the same period (from 19th to 24th of July) which will hopefully allow for people willing to travel to still meet with our fantastic crowd of sailors. Also within the usual time frame we will output the formal yearly reporting.
