Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production

There is big news, and there is Rolex big news, and in some ways, ne'er the twain shall meet. At Baselworld this year, Rolex debuted a first for the company: the very first, ever, Rolex delivered on a rubber strap. Now, for most companies this would have little effect on watch enthusiasts other than to evoke (very) tepid interest at best, and boredom at worst – but this is not an ordinary rubber strap, this is an official, designed-and-tested-and-thoroughly-obsessed-over-by-Rolex rubber strap. And thereby hangs a tale.

rolex yachtmaster medium

The Yachtmaster, as we have mentioned in some of our previous coverage , occupies a somewhat particular place in Rolex’s lineup of sports watches; it shares water-resistance and a turning bezel with the Submariner (the latter is water resistant to 300 m while the Yachtmaster standard model is water resistant to 100 m). It is certainly not a tool watch; the Yachtmaster is offered in either platinum and steel, or gold and steel (that’s Rolesium and Rolesor, lest we forget) and is either quietly or unequivocally luxurious depending on what size and metal you go for (Rolex makes the Yachtmaster in both 35 mm and 40 mm sizes).

The Yachtmaster’s history goes back to the first introduction of the watch in 1992, although the name, interestingly enough, appears on the dial of a prototype Yachtmaster Chronograph from the late 1960s (a watch so legendary I am actually forced to use the word; one of three known is in the collection of Mr. John Goldberger; we covered it – and a host of other remarkable ultra-rare watches from his collection – in a very memorable episode of Talking Watches ).

rolex yachtmaster medium

The term “Yachtmaster” is also, incidentally, used for a certificate of competency in yachting which is issued by the Royal Yachting Association, although we’re unaware of any specific association between the RYA and the Yachtmaster watch.

Now, this newest version of the Yachtmaster does take a few pages from the existing Yachtmaster playbook: 100-meter water resistance, a bidirectional turning bezel, and a dial and hands that echo the Submariner. There are also a couple of features that may make vintage Sub enthusiasts wonder if Rolex mightn’t have an exceedingly subtle sense of humor; the gilt coronet and “Rolex,” and the red lettering, both features which according to HODINKEE founder Ben Clymer would have, had they appeared on a Rolex dive watch, made it instantly the single most popular watch in the modern Rolex inventory. The case is rose gold – Rolex famously makes their own, called Everose, in their own foundry, with a bit of platinum mixed in to prevent discoloration – and the bezel, rather than being some other precious metal (as is the case in the “standard” Yachtmasters) is in black Cerachrom – a very technical-looking matte black that contrasts sharply with the gold case. Somehow, between the rose gold, the Cerachrom bezel, and the new Oysterflex bracelet this manages to be the most luxurious and at the same time most technical Yachtmaster yet (leaving aside the Yachtmaster II, which we recently reviewed right here , but that is a watch that marches to the beat of a different drummer entirely).

rolex yachtmaster medium

The two different versions of the Everose Yachtmaster (40 mm and 37 mm) sport different movements; the larger uses the caliber 3135 and the smaller, the newer 2236, which sports the “Syloxi” silicon balance spring (first used by Rolex in 2014).

rolex yachtmaster medium

The Oysterflex bracelet is, in a nutshell, quite a piece of work. One of the most endearing traits of Rolex as a company is that it tends to demonstrate what we can only describe as a laudable degree of corporate obsessive-compulsive disorder when it comes to research and development, and it does so, often, without making any sort of fanfare about it at all. In this case we do know a little bit about the Oysterflex, however – it is basically designed to have the hypoallergenic and comfort properties of a rubber strap and the durability and shape-retention properties of a bracelet.

At the core of the Oysterflex bracelet are metal inserts made of titanium and nickel, which are used to affix the bracelet to the clasp and watch case; over those is a sheathing of “high-performance black elastomer.” “Elastomer” is a portmanteau word, formed from “elastic” and “polymer” and is a general term for natural and synthetic rubbers. In addition to the materials complexity of the Oysterflex bracelet, it is also shaped in a rather unusual fashion – there are ridges molded into the the wristward face of the bracelet, which are intended to allow the bracelet when worn to better approximate the natural curvature of the wrist.

rolex yachtmaster medium

They might look a bit odd but in practice, the design works out quite wonderfully; this is easily the most downright comfortable and organic-feeling rubber strap I have ever worn, and like the entire watch manages to be both extremely technical in feel, and very luxurious at the same time; I doubt whether any company has ever taken so much trouble over the design of a strap (for all that Rolex prefers the term “bracelet” in describing the Oysterflex, habit dies hard and you’ll probably find yourself calling it a strap, just as we did). On the wrist, the two stabilizing ridges do exactly what they are supposed to: keep the watch from shifting, as heavier watches on rubber straps are wont to do, without requiring you to have the strap uncomfortably tight. The Everose Oysterlock clasp does a superb job mechanically and also looks fabulous into the bargain; the quality of finish on the clasp and case may not seem terribly elaborate at first, but it is as technically flawless as anything I have ever seen at any price, on any watch.

rolex yachtmaster medium

What we have here, in other words, is a very Rolex interpretation of luxury. Yes, this is a gold watch, and a gold Rolex, and wearing a gold Rolex always carries with it, shall we say, certain semiotic complexities. However there is also another side to the watch, and to the Rolex approach to luxury in general: the taking of such pains to produce technical perfection that technical perfection becomes a luxury in itself.

rolex yachtmaster medium

The Everose Rolex Yachtmaster, in Rolex Everose, with Everose Oysterclasp and Oysterflex bracelet, as shown, $22,000 in 37 mm, and $24,950 in 40 mm. For more info, check out Rolex.com.

Owner review: Rolex Yacht Master 16622

The forgotten rolex wildcard..

Rolex Yacht Master 16622

The 1980s was a time of innovation at Rolex, with a refresh of everything in the Rolex catalog and putting a more modern and premium look to the entire line up. Gone are the days of Matte Painted dials, and hand-wound movements of the Daytona but in with the new Glossy dials, White Gold Indices and Sapphire Crystals, similar to the Rolex Line-Up you see today. The 1980s brought change aesthetically and internally to the entire catalog, but while Rolex was in development of the then new Submariner 16610, the iconic design you know today was a redesign of the original?

In the 1980s, Rolex wanted to significantly update and modernize the Rolex Submariner and give a more modern take of the outgoing Submariner 16800 of the late 70s-mid 80s. Rolex experimented with several designs, trying to give a more modern look while keeping the essence and design aspects of a submariner. They were adamant about keeping the submariner DNA for the new redesign and were scared that when unveiled, the design may not appeal to the fans of the brand and the submariner. We are of course talking about one of the most iconic and recognisable watches of all time. The thing was, they really liked the new design, since its more sleek and modern than the outgoing 16800. At the end of the day the Submariner 16610 you know and love came out and was an instant hit and the rest was history. But what happened to the prototype design? The Rolex Yacht Master 16622 was born.

Rolex Yachtmaster 16622

In 1997, we saw the introduction of the Stainless steel Rolex Yacht Master 16622. The 16622 series came in two dial variations Blue and wait for it…..Platinum. You Read it right, they used a solid platinum dial and a platinum rotating bezel, unique only to the Yachtmaster Line. This was the first time Rolex has experimented with the mix of elements being steel and Platinum in a sports watch .

The Rolex Yacht Master 16622 was also the first new release to use super luminova instead of tritium. The Rolesium Yacht Master was seen as a very unique watch that was somewhat oddball in the world of watches because of its combination of materials and its flashy looks featuring the polished centre link bracelet.

If you wanted a more elegant sports watch that looks good on formal occasions and also in the sports club, then the yacht master is the watch for you. The platinum dial glistens under the light and looks simply stunning together with the red contrast “Yacht Master” text and red seconds hand.

The Ladies 29mm and MidSize 35mm versions were also available and in my opinion, would be a stunning watch to pair with your significant other. One of the biggest drawbacks was the price, it was one of, if not the most expensive steel Rolex in the retail catalogue.

Rolex Yachtmaster 16622

The Rolex Yacht Master 16622 was updated in 2013 with the 116622. It included updates such as the more modern Rolex easy link clasp, an updated dial with thinner fonts and a smoother glossy look as opposed to the more metallic look of the old dial. The addition of super luminova instead of the old luminova also make the dial look different. Changes were also made to the bracelet with the end-links fitting much more nicely into the lugs.

Recently we have seen many things happen in the watch market . Rolex Sports Models have had a meteoric rise in value, the hype around every sports model in the Rolex range and truly there insane prices for some pieces in the Submariner ,GMT, Explorer and especially Daytona lines.

In my opinion the Rolex Yacht Master 16622 is a lot of watch for the money. You get precious metals, flashy looks, stunning dial, reliable movement, beautiful finishing and modern looks for around 8,000 USD or 400k pesos. All less than a new submariner !

Rolex Yacht Master 16622

  • One of the cheapest and best value Rolex sports models out there, or less than a new Submariner or the Submariner of its time, the yacht master is a great deal, especially if you want your first expensive piece. For collectors, this would fit collections perfectly, being a unique and elegant addition to your collection and your daily rotation.
  • The Yachtmaster has become iconic and has appeared on the wrist on many stars such as Brad Pitt, Hulk Hogan and most notably Bruce Willis.
  • Great wearability.
  • It's a Scratch Magnet, especially with the giant polished center links.
  • It's heavy, it has a good heft but it gets bothersome at times, due to its sheer weight caused by the platinum dial and bezel.
  • The size, some may find it bug due to the big bezel and smooth case, it appears bigger on some than the Submariner of the time.

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 40 in Oystersteel and Everose gold with an Oyster bracelet.

Bidirectional rotatable bezel, timing the distance.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background.

This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

Intense black dial

Exceptional legibility.

Like all Rolex Professional watches, the Yacht-Master 40 offers exceptional legibility in all circumstances, and especially in the dark, thanks to its Chromalight display.

The broad hands and hour markers in simple shapes – triangles, circles, rectangles – are filled with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting glow.

Everose Rolesor

A meeting of two metals.

Gold is coveted for its lustre and nobility. Steel reinforces strength and reliability. Together, they harmoniously combine the best of their properties.

A true Rolex signature, Rolesor has featured on Rolex models since the early 1930s, and was trademarked as a name in 1933. It is one of the prominent pillars of the Oyster collection.

The Oyster bracelet

Alchemy of form and function.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.

This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ROLEX YACHT-MASTER COLLECTION

Although the Yacht-Master collection was not introduced until 1992, the relationship between Rolex and the world of sailing dates to the late 1950s.

With the invention of the Oyster, the world’s first waterproof wristwatch case, Rolex had already built a reputation for making excellent waterproof watches since the 1920s. In 1958, Rolex entered a partnership with the prestigious New York Yacht Club, a social and boating club which sponsors an annual regatta.

By 1966, Rolex solidified its ties to the world of sailing when Francis Chichester – one of the world’s pioneering aviators and solo sailors – became the first person to sail around the globe, all while wearing a Rolex on his wrist. He sailed on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, from August 1966 to May 1967, taking him 29,600 miles around the world. What made his journey even more impressive is that he had limited access to tools in navigating his journey, having only a few nautical charts, a sextant, and a Rolex Oyster Perpetual to keep time.

Even with its proven success at making watches suited for sailing, Rolex never got around to creating a watch specifically for this category. The brand did make a prototype of the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on its dial, but they ultimately decided not to bring it to market. Only two known examples of the Cosmograph Yacht Master are known to exist, one of which was owned by singer Eric Clapton and sold at auction in 2003.

Almost three decades later in 1992, Rolex finally introduced the modern Yacht-Master - the brand’s first luxury sports watch built for the open seas. Whereas Rolex’s previous sports watches had utilitarian themes – the Submariner for diving, the Daytona for racing, and so on – the Yacht-Master was focused on aesthetics and luxury. To drive this home, the first ever Rolex Yacht-Master was forged in solid 18k yellow gold, from its bi-directional rotating bezel to its Oyster bracelet.

Over the next few decades, Rolex gradually expanded the Yacht-Master collection to include larger sizes, new metals such as steel, platinum, white gold, and Everose, and incorporated new materials like the Cerachrom ceramic bezel and the Oysterflex rubber bracelet. In its relatively short history, the Rolex Yacht-Master has become one of the most varied collections among Rolex sport watches.

Fifteen years after the launch of the Yacht-Master, Rolex introduced its bigger sibling, the Yacht-Master II. While the original Yacht-Master was luxury-oriented, the latter was a purpose-built watch especially designed to time regatta races.

The Yacht-Master II was unlike anything Rolex had launched before. Not only was it massive with its 44mm case, but it also had a bold, visually striking design that stood out among Rolex’s catalog of versatile timepieces.

On its debut, it also instantly became Rolex’s most complicated watch. To cater to its niche market, Rolex equipped the Yacht-Master II with innovative features like a regatta countdown timer (to accurately measure time until the start of a race), and a flyback and fly-forward functionality (to easily synchronize the time should the race officials have to restart the race).

The Rolex Yacht-Master II is only available in one size, a 44mm case with an Oyster bracelet, but is available in a variety of metal alloys.

The Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II continue to be part of Rolex’s catalog and serve as the embodiment of the brand’s relationship with the world of sailing.

KEY FEATURES OF THE ROLEX YACHT-MASTER

The Rolex Yacht-Master collection is composed of two families of watches: the original Yacht-Master, and the Yacht-Master II. While these two models have the same name, they are quite different from each other.

The Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992 as an ultra-luxurious sports watch for yachting and sailing enthusiasts. The nautical-inspired timepiece takes after the Rolex Submariner, but with greater emphasis on luxury materials and aesthetics.

The Yacht-Master II is a relatively new addition to the Rolex portfolio, introduced in 2007. Much larger that the Yacht-Master at 44mm, it is a purpose-built regatta watch equipped with a countdown timer for use in competitive sailing.

FEATURES OF THE ROLEX YACHTMASTER

Rolex Yacht-Master models come in an Oyster case with 100 meters of water resistance, a Triplock winding crown, and a bi-directional rotating bezel with raised 60-minute graduations and numerals. To make the watch easily readable, the dial features lume-filled round, baton, and triangular hour markers; luminous Mercedes-style hands, a date window at 3 o’clock, and a sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens for easier reading of the date.

Since the introduction of the first all-gold Rolex Yacht-Master model in 1992, Rolex has expanded the line in terms of materials, aesthetic details, and mechanical upgrades. Here are the options available within the collection.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER SIZES

The Yacht-Master line is one of the most varied Rolex collections due mainly to the number of sizes made available. The smaller sizes, particularly the Lady Yacht-Master models, have been discontinued, but are still available in the pre-owned market.

  • 29mm (discontinued)
  • 35mm (discontinued)

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER MATERIALS

The solid 18k yellow gold and two-tone models of the Yacht-Master have been discontinued and replaced with the Everose and White Gold versions. The 37 and 40mm sizes come in Everose, Everose Rolesor, and Rolesium metals, while the 42mm comes exclusively in White Gold.

  • Yellow Gold (discontinued)
  • Yellow Rolesor (Steel and Yellow Gold - discontinued)
  • Everose Gold
  • Everose Rolesor (Steel and Everose Gold)
  • Rolesium (Oystersteel and platinum)

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER BEZELS

The bezel material used for the Yacht-Master depends on the metal or alloy used for the case.

  • Matte Cerachrom bezel – 18k Everose and white gold models
  • 18k Gold bezel – Rolesor steel and gold models
  • 950 Platinum – Rolesium steel and platinum models

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER BRACELETS

The Rolex Yacht-Master has only been equipped with the three-link Oyster bracelet and the Oysterflex bracelet, which combines rubber with an internal flexible metal blade. The Oysterflex can only be found on the solid 18k Everose and white gold models with matte ceramic bezels.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER MOVEMENTS

The Yacht-Master uses a time-and-date movement that changes depending on the size of the watch. Below are the movements used for each size.

  • 29mm - Caliber 2135; Caliber 2235
  • 35mm - Caliber 2135; Caliber 2235
  • 37mm - Caliber 2236
  • 40mm - Caliber 3135; Caliber 3235
  • 42mm - Caliber 3235

FEATURES OF THE ROLEX YACHTMASTER II

Rolex yacht-master ii design.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II is one of the brand’s largest watches. Each model comes with a 44mm Oyster case that is water resistant to 100 meters, a Triplock winding crown, a Ring Command Bezel, two chronograph pushers, and an Oyster bracelet.

It is also one of Rolex’s most complicated watches, as it features a regatta chronograph with a countdown that can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, allowing yacht racers to accurately time the start of a race. Furthermore, its Ring Command Bezel is more than just a decorative element – it operates in conjunction with the movement and is actually how the user can set the programmable countdown.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II MATERIALS

All Rolex Yacht-Master II models come in the same 44mm case size. Models are available in the following metals:

  • Yellow Gold
  • White Gold and Platinum
  • Everose Rolesor (stainless steel and Everose gold)
  • Oystersteel

The materials used for the bezel differ depending on the material of the case. Below are the available configurations.

  • Cerachrom Bezel – Yellow Gold, Everose Rolesor, Oystersteel
  • 950 Platinum – White Gold

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II DIALS

The Yacht-Master II dial is unlike anything seen on other Rolex models because of its niche complication. It features a countdown display which can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, and read using the red-tipped arrow hand. Below the hour and minute hands at the center is a running seconds sub-dial. There’s also a red central chronograph hand, which can fly back or fly-forward to its starting position while in motion. It also features 12 square lume-filled hour markers.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II MOVEMENTS

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with two of Rolex’s most advanced movements to date, which feature a programmable countdown timer with mechanical memory, and chronograph synchronization.

Earlier models were powered by the 4160, and later models were upgraded to the 4161. The latter is based on the Daytona’s Caliber 4130, which features the same blue Parachrom hairspring for better switch resistance, and offer a 72-hour power reserve.

  • Ref 116689 - Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161
  • Ref 116688 - Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161
  • Ref 116681 - Caliber 4160; Caliber 4161
  • Ref 116680 - Caliber 4161

POPULAR ROLEX YACHT-MASTER AND YACHT-MASTER II COMPARISON

Rolex Yacht-Master Everose 126655 and 268655

Both introduced in 2015, the ref 126655 and 268655 marked the first time that the Rolex Yacht-Master was presented in solid Everose gold and an Oysterflex bracelet.

These models have slight but important differences. The former comes in a 40mm case and the latter in a 37mm case. Moreover, they are powered by different movements.

The 40mm edition runs on the ever-reliable Caliber 3235 movement which is used by many of Rolex’s date watches, such as the Submariner and Datejust. The 37mm edition, meanwhile, uses the Caliber 2236 movement, which is found in ladies’ watches such as the Lady-Datejust. They run using different oscillators, with the 3235 using the Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and the 2236 using the Syloxi hairspring. Both are COSC-certified but the 3235 runs on a longer power reserve of 70 hours (vs 55 hours).

Rolex Yacht-Master Rolesor vs Rolesium

The Rolex Yacht-Master comes in a variety of mixed metals, namely Rolesor and Rolesium. “Rolesor” is a Rolex term that refers to the combination of stainless steel and gold while “Rolesium” refers to the combination of stainless steel and platinum.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 and 37mm sizes come in Everose Rolesor (Oystersteel and 18k Everose gold) and Rolesium (Oystersteel and 950 platinum) with Everose gold appearing on the bezel and center links, while platinum appears in a sandblasted finish on the bezel.

About Rolex Midsize Watches

Along with both men's and women's models, Rolex also produces a number of 'Midsize' watches that offer case diameters that sit between the classic gents and ladies sizes. Although most Rolex watches produced up until the 1940s have case sizes that would classify them as midsize models by today's standards, it was not until the 1950s that Rolex specifically began producing smaller sized versions of some of their best-selling designs.

Rolex Midsize watches will sometimes be referred to as ‘boys size’ models in older catalogs and marketing materials, and this term is also used to describe midsize watches from a variety of other brands. While Midsize Rolex watches offer slightly reduced case dimensions and often do not feature quite as many options as the standard-size models in the brand's catalog, all Rolex Midsize watches are built to the same legendary standards that serve as the foundation of Rolex's sterling reputation.

Midsize Rolex Watch History

Most of the full-size wristwatches that were produced during the early years of Rolex's history would be considered 'mid-size' by today's standards. However, these timepieces were never originally produced to be mid-size models and were simply standard men's models for the time. Their smaller case sizes are simply a reflection of consumer preferences at the time, rather than an intentional effort by Rolex to produce a more compact watch.

Following the success of the 1945 launch of the Datejust collection, Rolex began to introduce additional sizes of date-displaying wristwatches during the 1950s. This marked the official start of Rolex Midsize models as watches that were specifically produced to be smaller versions of existing models. Along with ladies watches that were significantly smaller, Rolex also introduced several mid-size models that were slightly smaller than their full-size counterparts, while still significantly larger than the Lady-Datejust watches.

Since the 1950s, Midsize Rolex watches have remained a constant part of the brand's catalog; however the definition of 'mid-size' has changed over the years. Historically, 36mm was the standard size for Rolex's various men's models. While many of the brand's sports watches offered larger case diameters, 36mm was the largest size available for many of Rolex’s most famous classic watches like the Datejust and Day-Date collections.

However, once Rolex released larger 40mm and 41mm versions of their classic watches, the traditional 36mm versions became classified as 'mid-size' models, while the 31mm versions technically became grouped into the 'small-size' category within the Rolex catalog. Most 36mm watches are still considered men's Rolex watches, but since they are no longer the largest size available within their respective collections, they are now found under the mid-size category within the Datejust collection section on the Rolex website. Today, Rolex Midsize watches can be found with case diameters ranging from 31mm to 36mm, with the 34mm and 36mm versions offering a number of different dial and bezel styles that will appeal equally to both men and women alike.

Additionally, it is also worth noting that while the majority of the Midsize Rolex watches are from the brands various classic collections, the Yacht-Master is the only Rolex sports watch to ever offer models with reduced case diameters. In the past, there were both Midsize and Lady Yacht-Master watches alongside the standard 40mm movel; however the ladies model has been discontinued, and the case diameter of the Midsize version has been increased from 35mm to 37mm for a slightly more contemporary look and feel.

Today, there are more Midsize Rolex watches in the brand's catalog than ever before, and they are becoming increasingly popular among female buyers. Historically, Rolex has always adhered to rather modest case proportions for its watches, but as modern consumer preferences have called for larger timepieces, Rolex has adapted, and now offers a wide variety of timepieces that are slightly more compact than the fill-size models, while still being significantly larger than the traditional Rolex women's watches.

How Much Is A Midsize Rolex Watch?

Retail prices for Midsize Rolex watches start at $5,000 for the 31mm Oyster Perpetual in full stainless steel and increase from there depending on a variety of factors such as the specific model and the materials used in its construction. On the pre-owned market, prices for used Midsize Rolex watches start out at roughly $2,695 for older discontinued models and reach well into the tens of thousands of dollars for models crafted from precious metals and set with diamonds or other gemstones.

Rolex Midsize Prices

Given that Midsize Rolex watches exist across a wide variety of different collections, the price range for Rolex Midsize models is incredibly large. Certain Rolex Midsize watches are simple stainless steel models with time-only movements, while others feature calendar displays and are crafted from solid 18k gold or platinum and set with diamonds and other precious gemstones. Consequently, the price range for Midsize Rolex watches can span anywhere between a few thousand dollars and tens of thousands of dollars.

When purchased brand-new at retail, the least expensive Midsize Rolex watch is the 31mm Oyster Perpetual in full stainless steel, which costs $5,000. Consequently the most expensive Rolex Midsize model would be one of the diamond-encrusted Pearlmaster 34mm watches in solid 18k Everose pink gold. Even the most affordable versions of these models will all cost tens of thousands of dollars when purchased brand-new, and the most expensive models will not even have their retail prices listed on the official Rolex website, with ‘ price upon request’ being the only thing stated.

With that in mind, these ultra-luxurious Midsize Rolex watches can often be found at a significant savings on the pre-owned market. At retail, these models are some of the most expensive Rolex watches available, and while they will never be inexpensive due to the premium nature of their materials, second-hand prices typically do not come without the steep premiums that are charged at retail. For those looking for the ultimate luxurious Rolex Midsize watch, buying a Pearlmaster on the pre-owned market is the most cost-effective way of purchasing one.

Generally speaking, more modern Rolex Midsize watches will be more expensive than their older counterparts, and those crafted from precious metals will almost always cost more than full stainless steel or two-tone models. Even on the pre-owned market, the price range for used midsize models is incredibly large, which means that there is a Midsize Rolex watch for every possible wrist and budget.

Rolex Midsize Watch Models

Rolex midsize watch sizes.

Since the 'Midsize' designation applies to a number of different Rolex watches, the actual size of a Midsize Rolex can vary depending on the specific collection. Including both current-production and discontinued models, Rolex Midsize watches are available in the following sizes:

  • 31mm - Oyster Precision, Oyster Perpetual, Datejust, Date
  • 34mm - Oyster Precision, Oyster Perpetual, Date, Air-King,
  • 36mm - Oyster Precision, Oyster Perpetual, Datejust, Day-Date
  • 37mm - Yacht-Master

Rolex Midsize Datejust

The Datejust is Rolex's best-selling watch collection of all time, and as a result of its success, the collection is offered with a remarkably diverse range of options and variations. Rolex Midsize Datejust models include the 31mm Datejust 31 and the 36mm Datejust 36. However, the collection also technically includes the 34mm Rolex Date. Although the Date has a slightly different name compared to the Datejust, the functionality of the two watches is virtually identical, and Rolex now includes the Date 34 as part of the greater Datejust collection on its official website. Additionally, it is worth noting that Rolex recently began grouping the 31mm version of the Datejust into the ‘small size’ category, as there is now a 41mm version that has taken over the 'large size' position within the brand's catalog. With that in mind, Midsize Rolex Datejust watches are offered in a wide variety of different materials and also with a vast range of options in regards to the different dials, bezels, and bracelets that are fitted to them.

Rolex Midsize Oyster Perpetual

As Rolex's most simple and straightforward watch collection, the Oyster Perpetual represents the entry-point into Rolex ownership. Much like the Datejust, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual collection is available in a number of different sizes, including several Midsize options. Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches are produced with case sizes that range from 26mm to 39mm, with the 31mm, 34mm, and 36mm versions occupying the Midsize options. In the past, Midsize Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches were produced in both two-tone and solid gold configurations; however all current-production Oyster Perpetual watches are crafted entirely from stainless steel, regardless of case size.

Rolex Midsize President

The 'Rolex President' nickname typically applies to the brand’s flagship Day-Date collection, and there has never been a Rolex Day-Date watch with a case-diameter smaller than 36mm. With the introduction of the larger Day-Date watches, the 36mm version became the Midsize option and additional dial and bezel styles were added to the line. However, in addition to the 36mm Day-Date President, there is also a 31mm Rolex Midsize President, which is actually a Datejust 31 crafted entirely from solid gold and fitted with Rolex’s iconic President bracelet. Although the Rolex Day-Date 36 could technically be considered a Midsize Rolex President, it is actually the 31mm solid gold Datejust on a President bracelet that is officially known as the Midsize President model.

Rolex Midsize Yacht-Master

While much of Rolex's legendary reputation was built upon its purpose-built sport and tool watches, the Yacht-Master collection is the only like of Rolex sports watches to offer a smaller version of the original model. At the present time, the Rolex Yacht-Master 37 is the Midsize Yacht-Master model within the brand's lineup; however in the past, Rolex offered both Midsize (35mm) and Lady Yacht-Master (29mm) models. While the classic 40mm model is technically the mid-size option within the current Rolex Yacht-Master lineup, as it sits in the middle between the 37mm and 42mm models, it is actually the 37mm version of the Yacht-Master that is officially classified as the 'mid-sized' model within the brand's current catalog.

Who Wears Rolex Midsize Watches?

Due to the numerous different sizes available, and the variety of different collections in which they can be found, Rolex Midsize watches can be spotted on the wrists of countless celebrities and other high-profile individuals.

Celebrities That Wear A Midsize Rolex

  • Ryan Gosling
  • Jennifer Aniston
  • Anthony Bourdain

Common Rolex Midsize Questions

What size is a rolex midsize watch.

Rolex currently produces watches with case sizes that range from 26mm to 44mm; however these days, it is generally accepted that those with case diameters between 31mm and 36mm fall into the "Midsize Rolex" category. With that in mind, 36mm has historically been the standard size for men's models and still is an incredibly popular size for men’s watches, while 31mm is now what Rolex would classify as a "small size" within the current Datejust collection on their official website. Additionally models such as the Rolex Yacht-Master 37 are classified as midsize watches simply because they are smaller versions of the standard model (40mm), despite their fairly average case diameters.

Does Rolex Still Make A Midsize?

Despite the definition of 'midsize' changing slightly over the years, Rolex does still make midsize watches by all definitions of the term. As of 2020, Rolex currently produces Midsize watches with 31mm, 34mm, 36mm, and 37mm case diameters, and these sizes are offered across 6 different collections within their catalog, including the Datejust, Day-Date, Oyster Perpetual, Date, and Pearlmaster,

What Are The Sizes Of Rolex Watches?

Rolex watches exist with case sizes that range from 24mm all the way up to 44mm, and some vintage ladies' cocktail watches can have cases that are even smaller. With that in mind, not all sizes are available for every Rolex watch collection, and many Rolex models are only manufactured in one size. Including discontinued models, Rolex's various self-winding watches can be found with the following case sizes: 24mm, 26mm, 28mm, 29mm, 31mm, 34mm, 35mm, 36mm, 37mm, 39mm, 40mm, 41mm, 42mm, and 44mm.

How Do You Measure A Rolex?

Typically, the size you will see listed for a Rolex watch refers to the diameter of its case. This measurement excludes any additional protrusions the watch case might have such as the lugs, winding crown, crown-guards, or chronograph pushers, To measure a Rolex watch, take either a ruler, tape measure, or set of calipers, and measure the diameter across the center of the case from one edge to another.

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.
