Boat of the Week: Meet the Lightning-Fast, 7,400 HP Superyacht That Thinks It’s a Jet Ski

The 114-foot "moon goddess" started life as a tender to a 250-foot mothership. now she's a go-fast superyacht that is very much her own person., howard walker, howard walker's most recent stories.

Moon Goddess is a 114-foot superyacht that was Designed as a Tender

For most boat owners, the idea of a tender is a rubber dinghy dangling on the back deck of the yacht. When Mexican billionaire Carlos Peralta went looking for a tender for his newly built, 250-foot Royal Denship superyacht Princess Mariana , he decided to go for something just a little grander.

Like a 114-foot, 87-ton rocket ship with a total of 7,400 horsepower and top speed of 50 mph. Christened Moon Goddess , the boat was designed to do a lunch run from Cannes to Corsica in the summer, or Miami to Bimini in the winter, while the mothership stayed at anchor.

When Peralta, founder of Mexican telecom giant Groupo Iusacell SA, decided to take a break from yachting in 2010, he put both yachts up for sale. After Princess Mariana found a buyer in 2011—her final asking price was $98 million—Peralta kept Moon Goddess at the back of his sprawling Miami estate on the Indian River near Bal Harbour.

Moon Goddess is a Fast 114-Foot Tender

With a total of 7,400 horsepower, Moon Goddess has a blistering top speed of 50 mph. With its jet drives, the yacht can also go from full speed to full stop in less than two boat lengths.  Camper & Nicholsons

Initially offered in 2010 for $9 million, by 2015 the price had dropped to $6.15 million. Now the head-rotating super-tender with its oh-so-Florida seafoam green paintwork, is back on the market, and being offered through Camper and Nicholsons, for what seems like a fire-sale price of just $2 million. Especially considering that she had a major refit last year, with new teak decks, paint, and engine and generator overhauls.

Where the 114-footer really stands out is with its stunning, aircraft-style superstructure, its split, wrap-around windshield and curvy tumblehome. Just as the Moon Goddess name suggests, the roof features a huge retractable moon-roof that power-slides open to flood the cabin with light.

Moon Goddess Interior Designed by Francois Zuretti

Unlike the bright green exterior, the interior by Francois Zuretti was designed with neutral, classic tones and furniture.  Camper & Nicholsons

Skagen, Denmark -based Danish Yachts built the boat, using carbon fiber and Kevlar to make her I-beam stiff and, for her size, extremely lightweight. She was launched in 2006.

To give the yacht its sensational performance, Oeino specified a pair of thundering, German-made MTU 4000M90 turbo diesels that packed 7,400 horsepower.  Delivering all that mechanical muscle are twin Hamilton water jets linked to the engines via carbon fiber shafts.

“The volume of water moving through those jets is just incredible,” the yacht’s captain, John Greenwood, tells Robb Report . “At full throttle, the jets could fill an Olympic-size swimming pool in one minute.”

Moon Goddess Yacht Is With her Mothership

Moon Goddess is beside her original mothership, the 250-foot Princess Mariana , which was sold in 2011.  Camper & Nicholsons

Greenwood, who has been captaining and caretaking Moon Goddess for the past eight years, says maneuverability is what sets the boat apart. “She spins on a dime, even at 40 knots. And flat out she’ll do 43, cruise all day at 25 and has a range of around 400 nautical miles.”

The boat’s top secret is its emergency stopping power. Hitting reverse at 40 knots will have the water jets instantly re-directing their huge thrust. The result; a full stop in an incredible one-and-a-half boat lengths. “At times it feels like you’re driving some oversized jet-ski,” says Greenwood. “It banks into turns and has the same kind of nimbleness and ability to change direction. It’s uncanny,” he explains.

Inside, the design layout is the work of acclaimed French designer Francois Zuretti. He gave Moon Goddess the look and feel of an oversized day boat, with an indoor/outdoor teak-decked saloon with big sofas for lounging, and an easy-on-the-eye neutral color scheme.

Moon Goddess Has a Bright Green Paint Work That Makes Her Distinctive

The seafoam green exterior makes Moon Goddess one of the most photographed yachts in Miami.  Camper & Nicholsons

Below decks, there are three spacious cabins, including a full-width master suite. There is also a well-equipped galley, a dining area, a second saloon and crew accommodations for five. Her ear-bleeding 60-speaker audio system reportedly defies description.

“I think the boat is in the best condition right now that it’s ever been,” says Greenwood. “She’s ready to go. There’s no other design like this. It is definitely the most photographed boat in Miami.”

"People who charter a yacht tend to want as many experiences as they can in a short space of time. It’s essentially a vacation in compressed format, so the yacht needs to collaborate with you in that. You need lots of different places to eat on board, so every day offers something different. The yacht also needs to make getting ashore easy, for meals on the beach and excursions, so it feels like you never do the same thing twice." - Espen Øino

Moon Goddess

Moon Goddess is a 35m motor yacht of lightweight, composite construction built by Danish Yachts in 2006 to a design by the award-winning Espen Oeino.

Moon Goddess was custom built to DNV classification and MCA. The yacht has had just one owner since new and is offered for sale in very good condition.

Moon Goddess has a sporty exterior profile, which is perfectly matched to her 43-knot top speed. She is powered by two MTU 4000M90 3,698hp engines and has a range of 400nm at 25 knots.

The yacht was built for an experienced owner, and intended for family use. The layout of Moon Goddess has been carefully considered to allow for two salon lounges, large cabins and versatile living space.

The interior of this unique motor yacht was designed by Francois Zuretti and features a contemporary style with clean lines and a neutral colour scheme. Exotic hardwoods run throughout, with custom cabinetry and furniture pieces. A state-of-the-art audio-visual entertainment system has been installed aboard Moon Goddess and this is operated via Control 4.

Moon Goddess has accommodation for six guests in three spacious suites, all located on the lower deck. The full-beam master suite is positioned forward, followed by a double cabin and a twin. There is separate accommodation for a complement of five crew.

One of Moon Goddess’ most notable features is her retractable ‘moon roof’. This allows the main deck salon to be opened up to the elements, creating a bright and expansive ambience.

The main deck is open to aft and here there’s comfortable lounge furniture and space to enjoy the sunshine. Steps lead down to the swim platform and the aft tender garage, which houses an 11ft AB tender that can seat four.

Fast yachts for sale: speed demons and dashing dayboats

Powerful, showy and thrilling, these boats are all about getting places – at speed. Perfect for short day cruises, weekends away or just opening the throttles at sea for the sheer joy of it. The era of austerity and rocketing fuel prices may have dampened the ardour of some for these speed demons, but with their sleek, sporty looks and unabashed power they still hold immense appeal. Moreover, these kind of yachts are often ground-breakers, whether it be hull design, build technology, new materials or fuel efficiency, so the fuel bill may not be as high as you fear.

And while top speeds can be impressive, they are more likely to be reserved for special occasions. More important for normal operation is performance at cruising power and range, so they really come into their own as dayboats and weekenders. Take your pick from this powerful pack, and start planning your Friday getaway…

Mistral 55 | 52 knots/47 knots

When a yacht takes the name of a strong wind, you can guess that her performance is going to be promising and this Pershing 115 does not disappoint, delivering a blistering 52 knots thanks to 12,500hp from twin Codag MTU engines and triple waterjets. She cruises at a no less impressive 47 knots, and comes with oodles of Italian style courtesy of Fulvio de Simoni , who was responsible for her naval architecture, styling and interior.

Mirage | 50 knots/45 knots

One of the fastest luxury yachts in the world, the 30 metre Mirage tops out at 50 knots thanks to her three 2,430 hp MTU engines coupled with Arneson drives. She is fleet of looks too with an immense glass windshield that flows back to the open deck space, a sleek black hull and low-riding superstructure, with a flybridge that melds into the yacht’s lines. Launched in 2010, she is the second Baia 100 to be built and accommodates up to 10 guests in suitably slick style.

Shooting Star | 48 knots-plus/40 knots

This 38 metre carbon flyer packs a punch with her 48 knot speed, but that’s only from the standard configuration of twin 16 cylinder MTU engines. With space for 20 cylinder engines, her innovative hull has been tank-tested all the way up to 65 knots. Combined with an ultra-light, pared-back Scandinavian style, acres of glass and tip-top technology, Shooting Star is one fast lady.

Daloli | 54 knots-plus/37 knots

Built by Heesen for the Sultan of Brunei in 1995, Daloli (ex- AA Absolute ) has some superlatives to her name. Her 16 cylinder MTU engines are boosted by triple waterjets and can push her to a no-holds-barred 54 knots, while at a cracking cruising speed of 37 knots she has a range of 1,000 nautical miles. Performance is matched by an ultra-modern interior, of course.

AB 116 | 50 knots/44 knots

Speed is obviously a priority when a yacht such built using the light, strong materials and technology developed for the aerospace industry, but it is not the sole raison d’etre of the AB 116 , for these innovations also eliminate vibrations, making the ride smooth even at 50 knots. Power comes from triple 2,400hp MTUs linked to water-jet drives.

Moon Goddess | 53 knots/44 knots

Styled by Espen Øino and built by Danish Yachts in 2006 for the owner of Princess Mariana , Moon Goddess  - now listed for sale with Burgess - was in many respects the predecessor of Shooting Star. The carbon fibre open sports yacht is light and manoeuvrable, with 16 cylinder MTU diesels driving twin water jets for speeds of up to 53 knots.

Ermis² | 55 knots/45 knots

The need for speed prescribed this unique New Zealand-built 37 metre superyacht’s power systems, design and construction – a whole new class of ultra-light technology. She was built specifically for getting to weekend destinations fast, and that means faster than a Force 10 wind at her 55 knot top speed. She also copes with any seas and with her extended ocean range of 2,300 nautical miles at 30 knots, the world could be your oyster almost every weekend. Ermis2 is now listed for sale with Ocean Independence.

One More Toy | 42 knots/35 knots

One of a kind, One More Toy is the only Pershing Pininfarina Limited Edition in the world, and with those Italian car designer credentials her styling is appropriately reminiscent of fast cars, right down to the Ferrari red leather interiors and Ferrari Grigio Silverstone paint job. With throttles open she tops 42 knots and cruises at a cracking 35.

And if you are looking for speed without fuel consumption, here’s a super sailer that would leave the average superyacht in its wake.

Swift | 30 knots under sail

The world’s fastest sailing catamaran – formerly known as Orange and more recently Gitana 13 – has been converted into a fast cruiser that is still capable of 30 knots under sail. She has set quite a precedent for gobbling up nautical miles – taking 43 days to sail New York to San Francisco, 11 days from San Francisco to Yokohama and 41 days from Hong Kong to London. Maybe a bit more than a weekender, but still an exhilarating ride without regard for the price of fuel.
