Broker’s Comments

TestaCuroraRace is a well upgraded example of the popular Cookson 50 racing yacht. With the canting keel and a relatively narrow water line, she is competitive in all conditions and wind angles.

She has the upgraded rig, taller than standard and increased canting angle on the keel.

The Canard is set up to twist slightly for ultimate upwind performance.

In her current owner ship she has also increased the draft of the keel to keep the righting moment the same, but decrease the displacement of the yacht, to give better performance in the light and downwind.

Further developments are to increase the bowsprit length slightly. The USP of the yacht is her constant optimization to be arguably the best Cookson 50. With a recent refit including a paint job, she also is looking the part.

Standing rigging is all in date, EC6 of course.

Owner’s Comments

The Cookson 50 is one of the most iconic ocean racing sailing yachts ever built. The design has its name on all of the world’s most prestigious trophies and will continue to do so. TestaCuoreRace is a rather fitting name for the yacht and she has seen a very thorough programme of maintenance and upgrades over the past 2 years, with a very strong sail wardrobe, upgraded canting angle and bulletproof hydraulics. A real turnkey option for the serious competitor for the world’s offshore circuit.

Design Specification

Designed by Farr Yacht Design, the Cookson 50 is a production boat made by Cookson’s yard. In respect to a standard boat, the interior has been modified to allow better sail handling – by cutting away the original kitchen positioned in the center of the boat and replacing it with a smaller one on the side. In addition, two hatch closures have been built to separate the lazarette from the living area, for safety reasons, in case of failure of the rudder.

Cookson 50 – TestaCuore

The Cookson 50 is one of the most iconic ocean racing yachts ever built. Her legendary design means that the Cookson 50 continues to top leader boards around the world. A concept put together by the kiwi boat builder Mick Cookson and the Farr office, the outcome achieved was a sleek, stylish race yacht that combines performance racing with an unusual level of comfort (compared to other 50 foot Grand Prix racing yachts). With a canting keel, twin carbon wheels, hydraulic winches (to do the heavy work for you) and a large sail plan, the Cookson 50 is sublimely fast, strong and easy to sail.

TestaCuore has seen a very thorough programme of maintenance and upgrades over the past 2 years, with a very strong sail wardrobe, upgraded canting angle and bulletproof hydraulics. A real turnkey option for the serious competitor for the world’s offshore circuit. She is currently being optimised with a new deeper keel (3,5 meters instead 3) and a lighter bulb (about 400 kg).

The Cookson 50 is a fantastic choice for serious racing teams, she is easy to power up and eats up the miles on the race course. The boats are strong yet still light enough to give adrenaline junkies a nice hit as they pop an A sail up and head off downwind.

How much should I tip the boat captain/crew?

The crew will work hard to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable time on board. If you have enjoyed your charter we would suggest a 10% is customary.

How do I confirm a yacht charter?

To confirm a charter we will send you a charter agreement for signature and invoice for a deposit. The owner will counter-sign the charter agreement and then your charter will be confirmed

What else will I need to pay for?

In addition to the charter fee you will pay an Advanced Charter Allowance (ACA) from which the cost for all food and drink for the duration of the charter, fuel, marina and any other additional expenses will be deducted.

What happens once I have booked?

Once you have booked a cruising charter we will be in touch to gather your charter preferences including dietary preferences, meal times and itinerary. We will liaise with the chef to arrange a proposed menu for the charter and put you in touch with the crew via Whatsapp chat.

What are high and low season dates for Caribbean cruising charters

High Season includes the Christmas and New Year period (approx 28th December – 7th January) and 2 weeks around Easter

Can I charter a yacht for a corporate event?

Yes, we offer corporate yacht charters that are perfect for team-building exercises and other corporate functions.

What insurance will I need?

The yacht is fully insured but you will need your own personal insurance that covers yacht racing

Do I need an owners rep/boat captain and what role will they have?

Most of our yachts have to come with a boat captain / owner’s representative; this person isn’t there to be the skipper and they can fit into your team wherever you need. There knowledge of the boat can help you get the best performance from the boat and minimise avoidable damage.

Eating out as a crew?

If you decide to venture out as a group and wish to include the permanent crew, please remember that what is your holiday is their job. If you would like to show your appreciation for all their hard work in making your holiday a success by asking them to join you for a night out, then please be kind enough to pay for their expenses.

What is racing yacht charter?

Racing yacht charter is a unique opportunity that allows you to charter a race prepared yacht with your team and participate in regattas around the world. We can cater for race charter opportunites from a group of friends wanting a fun regatta in the sun to a professional team looking for silverwear.

Do I need sailing experience to participate in a racing yacht charter?

Sailing experience requirements varies according to yacht and regatta of choice. Some yachts like a Volvo 65 require more sailing experience than joining the team on a 40′ racer cruiser. When arranging your charter with you we discuss any pre-requisite experience with you.

What is the duration of a racing yacht charter?

For most racing charters your schedule will include 2 training days prior to the event start date, for offshore races a third day for boat preparation will also be included.

What additional costs should I expect?

In addition to the charter fee you may pay a security deposit and an Advanced Charter Allowance (ACA) to cover charter related costs including race entry, berthing and other charter related costs.

Can you arrange accommodation?

Yes, we offer a regatta concierge service which means that in addition to arranging your race entry and berthing we can also recommend and book accommodation ashore, flights, transfers and restaurant bookings as well as much more.* * 10% service charge applies for regatta concierge services

Once you have booked a charter we will be in touch to gather crew information in order to handle the race entry on your behalf. As the regatta date approaches we will connect you with the Boat Captain via Whatsapp chat and provide useful information on both the event and on the location. We are available at any time via phone or email to answer any other questions or queries you may have.

What is the security deposit for?

The security deposit is to cover damage to the yacht, that is more than just general wear and tear that would be expected when racing. In the worst case scenario it will cover the excess should there be the need for a claim on the yacht’s insurance. However, it is also there to cover less serious damage that does not warrant an insurance claim like damages to sails. If there is no damage then we will refund the security deposit in the week following the charter. If there are any damages the value of these damages will be assessed and the balance of the security deposit refunded after these costs have been deducted.

Yacht description.

It is a rare opportunity to acquire a Cookson 50 in impeccable condition. This ocean racing yacht stands as an icon in its category, with a design that has left its mark on the world's most prestigious trophies, a legacy that is bound to endure. This Cookson 50 has undergone an extensive two-year program of maintenance and upgrades.

She features an exellent wardrobe, an upgraded canting angle, and bulletproof hydraulics.

In 2023, the yacht underwent a comprehensive refit, touching every aspect of its structure. From a complete repaint to the installation of new electrical systems, electronics, hydraulic systems, engine, and more.

Design Specification: Designed by Farr Yacht Design, the Cookson 50 is a production boat made by Cookson yard.

In respect to standard boat the interior has been modified to allow a better sailing handling by cutting away the original kitchen positioned in the center of the boat and replaced by a smaller one on the side. In addition, two hatches closure have been built to separate the lazarette from the living area for safety reason in case of failure of the rudder.

Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:

• Hull and deck are made in carbon fibre and foam sandwich, under vacuum with epoxy resin.
• Laminated in female mould.
• Side decks repainted in 2019

Keel, Rudder & Canard:

• The canting keel is made in high strength steel covered by a composite shell.
• The structure of the keel is original.
• The keel was replaced in 2022 with a deeper +50 cm.
• The Bulb has been lightened about 300 kg; now the boat is lighter (-300kg) and more straightening (+ 5%)
• A new Titanium Keel hydraulic ram has been replaced in 2017 and is now able to cant the keel 40° per side. From the original 32° per side.
• The rudder, and rudder stock are in carbon fibre, original.
• Rudder bearings have been checked in 2017, all gasket replaced.
• Carbon fiber Canard in front of the mast, original, able to be lifted and pivoting ±3° when in full down position
• Predisposition for emergency steering system: two CNC machined aluminum bracket installed on transom and a composite box. The canard shall be removed from forward location and installed on the aft box.
• Bowsprit fitted in 2016, completely in carbon fiber, with a unidirectional carbon bobstay and titanium pig nose. Extended 25cm. 2019.
• High modulus carbon two spreader mast produced by Hall Spar in 2014.
• Internal mast jack with pump
• Lateral shrouds in EC6 – 2018.
• D1 & Forestay Solid carbon Hall Spar 2014.
• Adjustable forestay with Cariboni hydraulic ram, fitted in 2017.
• Runners in PBO, Gottifredi 2018.

It is like a natural cycle by now. Every few years Mick Cookson decides that it's time he built himself a new boat, and after much doodling and invention, out pops something that is fast, fun to sail, and hopefully, commercially attractive.

His two most recent High Five yachts were the Cookson 39, which proved very competitive during the heyday of the IMS rule, and the Cookson 47, a development of Big Apple, which, with its sister ship Seahawk, won the 2000 Kenwood Cup in Hawaii. Both were from the drawing boards of Farr Yacht Design in Annapolis, MD

Now his sights are set on a 50-footer with a canting keel and trim tab arrangement. As with all his own projects, he has once again chosen Farr Yacht Design to develop the concept, which is aimed at plugging a hole in the market for an affordable, seriously quick, high-performance production  50-footer with a canting keel. "This all started out as a fixed keel yacht with a trim tab," says Mick, "We basically took the Transpac 52 concept of a lighting fast 52 foot racer, shrunk it to 50ft, and increased the freeboard so it had some internal volume and felt like a 50-footer rather than a One-Tonner. We wanted something that would be reasonable to live aboard offshore and that you could also use to entertain your friends at the dock."

Having recently completed the Farr Open 60, Virbac, winner of it's first regatta, the double handed Transat Jacque Vabres, which was technically very complex and therefore expensive to build, much of his thinking has gone into getting the benefits of a canting keel, but containing the cost.

Having started with the fixed keel, trim tab idea, Cookson's thoughts ranged across to the radical end of the spectrum to an all-out machine with canting keel, free-standing rotating wing mast and so on. Then, the pendulum swung back towards the middle and Cookson settled on a more conservative go-fast boat, built in carbon and foam core, with a swept-spreader rig - a "nice yacht".

One of Cookson's major goals with the project is to provide a yacht that can be raced or cruised fast and safely by small crews, double-handed or even single-handed when the desire arises. With the rise in popularity of this kind of racing the fixed keel option looked less attractive. Crew costs are one of the major limiting factors according to many owners today. This boat will have the ability to sail with significantly less crew than other boats its size.

For these reasons, the idea of a canting keel kept tempting his imagination and he decided to have another  look at it. The factors against it were largely expense - mainly because of the requirement for a low-drag high-tensile machined steel fin, plus some form of forward foil or foils to provide lateral resistance. "Even using less than optimum steel for the fin, you would be adding something like $NZ150, 000 to the price over a fixed keel version," says Cookson.

But, the search for alternatives continued - including much discussion inside and outside the yard. The outcome of all this ferment is a package of truly beautiful hull form with a displacement of 7-tonnes and a keel and trim tab that swings 35° both sides and no forward foils. Cookson stated that, "In over 30 years of boat building this is the fastest looking boat we've ever set frames up for" and Farr Yacht Design states that, "This will be, by far, the fastest reaching and running 50 footer we've ever designed." "The canting keel allows us to design a boat that is similar in weight for it's waterline to the TP52, yet maintain more stability due to the effects of canting ballast, giving us a highly stable yacht that will be lightning quick, sea kindly, and require fewer people to bring her to top performance."

Cost reduction is achieved through the lack of a third foil and limiting the swing to 35°, which reduces the ram travel. Eliminating forward foils reduces drag, which, in turn, allows for a larger-chord medium-tech fabricated steel fin arrangement, which would be much more affordable. The keel will cant via a hydraulic ram, while the trim tab will be highly geared and controlled with a small electric motor via a switch and angle indicator at the twin helm stations.

"When you really want to increase the righting moment of the boat is blast reaching. In those conditions, you are going so fast, you need very little lateral resistance and you can have the keel fully canted," says Cookson.

The logic seems compelling and the combination of Cookson Boat builders' extensive experience and Farr Yacht Design's expertise makes for a powerful supporting argument.

Cookson intends offering the boat in two incarnations, a race version and a racer cruiser version. The race version would have a bigger cockpit, smaller cabin arrangement, with an optional coffee grinder, and virtually nothing forward of the mast below, while the racer cruiser would have an owner's double cabin forward of the mast, bigger aft cabins and a correspondingly smaller cockpit.

The idea is that the racer versions would be held to a one-design format, a la the Farr 40 class. But, with a sensible handicap system, the racers and racer-cruisers could compete fairly against each other as well.

The target is to offer both versions in a basic sail-away configuration for $NZ1 million and Cookson says he already has strong interest from owners eager to move up to a yacht of this size with decent amenities, a sweet hull shape and the added technical interest of a canting keel and trim tab for sizzling performance.

About Time has been super consistent with her results, for the last two years she has raced in the CYCA Ocean Point series and come away with 2nd IRC Overall 2018/19 beating high end competitors like TP 52 Quest and Rogers 46 Smuggler. Then again in 2019/20 About Time scored another impressive 2nd IRC Overall. This was backed up with yet another 2nd IRC Div 2 Sydney Gold Coast race 2019 and a 3rd IRC Div 2 Hamilton Island race week 2018.

Earlier in her life under a previous name, About Time’s keel was modified to a fixed fin, and it was optimised further for performance in 2011 by Farr Yacht Design. She now has an IRC rating 23 points below her canting sisterships and often beats them across the line as well. Pretty good outcome I would suggest.
