Sailing gloves are one of the few pieces of gear to bridge the entire spectrum of racing, from Sunfish to TP52s to maxi racers—we all wear the same products to protect our hands. They’ve come a long way from the classic Trophy gloves of the 1970s. Synthetics have replaced leather, stitching is often done with Kevlar thread, and neoprene cuffs and mesh backs have become de rigueur for many.

Each brand has its own proprietary materials, often with exotic names, especially for the area that gets the heaviest use when handling lines—the palm. And there is some notable attention to detail, such as locking tabs to prevent the Velcro wristband from opening if snagged on a line, watch cut-outs and sectioned materials allowing better finger articulation. A handful of designs are specifically built for winter and summer conditions, meeting the needs of frostbite sailors as well as those in more tropical climes.

The true measure of a good pair of sailing gloves , however, is comfort, grip and durability. With comparable price points, if you want a straight-forward sailing glove, there’s plenty of choices. If you’re looking for some unique spins on the traditional glove, there are a few of those available as well. We chose to look at full-finger gloves, which for most models means all but the pointer finger and thumb are completely covered, although half-finger versions are available for many. All-Around Gloves

One of the first things you’ll notice about the Gill’s top-of-the-line glove is that all but the very back of each finger is wrapped in an aramid, leather-like fabric, which provides plenty of durability and protection. A lot of gloves transition immediately from the face of each finger to a lightweight fabric. Across the palm, Gill has a nice, grippy surface. Better still, it runs just around the palm for holding and hand protection when carrying a wrap of line around your hand. We liked the lack of seams on the fingertips, which provides a more comfortable fit and better dexterity. More economical than the Gill’s Pro model, the Championship Glove still has several of the features of its sibling. The working surface is similar to what’s on the Pro, and it, too, wraps only around the palm. A small tab of the material is also sewn on the face of the thumb. Breathable stretch fabric covers the back of the hand and the sides of each finger, except the insides of the second and third, marking a significant durability difference between this and the Pro. Harken’s Classic Glove is a straightforward, no-frills glove at a budget price. Palm reinforcement runs all the way up the inside of the fingers, and the back includes the same nylon spandex mesh as its more expensive sibling. Especially cool is a soft, simulated leather fabric with ventilation holes, that runs up the outside of each finger, adding to the glove’s durability. The first thing you’ll notice about the Harken Reflex Performance glove is the number of different materials. On the back is a nylon spandex mesh to keep the glove lightweight and your hands cooler, as well as rubber guard strips that run up the first two fingers and a convenient watch cut-out. The working side of the glove includes a padded palm guard placed right where you would wrap a line around you hand. Palm reinforcement runs halfway up each finger, leaving much thinner, smooth material at the finger tips, which increases tip sensitivity—great if you find yourself having to deal with manipulating small objects (think ring dings) or attend to instruments with your gloves on. Billed as a sailing “work glove,” the mustang EP3250 is certainly built that way. Constructed of 3mm neoprene, the glove is clearly made for cooler, but not cold, conditions. The palm is layered with PVC abrasion-resistant material, which extends up the fingers, ending just short of the finger tips, and is continuous except for the finger joints, making it easier to articulate the fingers. The question is whether or not those areas might be prone to early wear. That material wraps well around the side of the palm and the little finger, providing for increased durability. Mustang Traction Full-Finger

Here’s a unique idea—create a glove that not only does all the things a sailing glove is supposed to do but allows you finger-tip dexterity for fine-motor activities, such as manipulating navigational tools—think touch screens—or dealing with anything else that you can’t do with a glove on. It’s done by providing fold-back tips on the thumb, index and middle fingers. These are easy to open and slide back in place. By far the least expensive of the group, but still a surprisingly comfortable and well-built, no-frills glove. Zhik G2 Performance

Zhik’s top-of-the-line gloves include Kevlar stitching, padding extending from the palm up through the halfway point of the fingers and a design that places seams away from traditional pressure points. These are made for a snug fit, which might seem initially uncomfortable, but once you start using them you’ll appreciate how your hands seem locked into the gloves. The palm and finger padding are somewhat smooth compared to the synthetic leather used in other gloves, making them not quite as grippy. There are no seams on the fingertips, making for a comfortable fit. The top of the thumb opening is cut and not finished, which seems unusual, given that the open pointer finger opening is finished. We wonder how that will affect durability. Zhik recommends buying a size down from what you normally wear. However, when we tried a size large, which we normally wear, they fit fine. Zhik Gs Sticky

Most of us know about Atlas gloves—the type sold in gardening and hardware stores. Lightweight, very inexpensive and perfectly serviceable for at least handful of sailing days. Some suppliers of sailing gloves have taken note and are now producing their own versions of the Atlas glove—including Zhik. Their seamless nylon glove has a textured, grippy latex surface on the palm and insides of the fingers. The result is a very straightforward, comfortable and flexible glove. The only downside is that they only come in black, which might prove a little warm in mid-summer. Sold in three-packs, they retail for 19.99. https://www.zhik.com/

Cold Weather Gloves

Gill Three Seasons

This is basically a neoprene construction with the same reinforcement as the Gill Championship glove. The glove is slightly longer, proving a little more warmth to the wrist area while minimizing separation between the glove and the sleeve top. The neoprene is thick enough to work well for frostbiting, yet not so thick as to restrict movement or become overly hot when conditions warm. Like all of the colder-weather gloves we looked at, there’s not watch cut-out, so if you wear a wrist watch, plan to wear it over the glove sleeve. $35.95 https://www.gillmarine.com/

Rooster Combi

Here’s one we didn’t see coming—Rooster’s unique cold-weather approach to their already formidable line of gloves. The Combi Glove features an “AquaFleece” mitten that can be pulled up and over the fingers between races to keep them warmer by reducing wind chill. When it’s time to race, pull the mitten over the back of the hand, tuck it into a neat pouch located on the back of the glove, and you’re back to a more traditional cold-weather racing glove. Clever, indeed. The palm and insides of the fingers have a sticky grip surface, making it easy to hold on to lines. The glove extends further up the wrist than any of the other gloves we looked at, which is great for keeping your hands warm and helps avoid a gap between the glove and the sleeve end of your top. West Marine 3 Seasons

Similar in design aesthetics to the West Long Finger model and with slight changes to the reinforcement panels, the 3 Seasons glove is constructed with 2.5 mm neoprene, and all the fingers are fully covered. Because of the neoprene, it feels a little stiffer than the Long Finger, which should be no surprise, but not to the point where it’s difficult to close your hand. The neoprene should do a great job of keeping your hands warm in all but the coldest conditions. Again, a straightforward, no-frills glove for the price. $34.99. https://www.westmarine.com

Bruce Jacobs and Rachael Sprot, skippers at Adventure sailing company Rubicon3, put a selection of insulated waterproof winter sailing gloves through their paces over the autumn and winter.

Sailing gloves come in a wide variety of styles. Buying the best sailing gloves for you can be a difficult task and will depend on the conditions in which you intend on using them. Winter sailing gloves needs to be warm, even when it gets wet, and still allow you to conduct the majority of tasks on deck without needing to be taken off.

It’s perhaps one of the hardest items for manufacturers to get right – it’s one big compromise and we’ve never found the perfect winter sailing glove. Over the winter, we tried four more.

Gill Extreme

These gloves have loads of neoprene to keep your hands warm even when they get soaked. A long cuff keeps your wrist really warm and the PU grip on the palm worked well.

The trade off for all that warmth is that they are a bit slow to get on and off and quite bulky once on. Gill says there are plans to update the Extreme glove design this season.

Features: 1.5mm neoprene with good grip and insulation.

Verdict: A little impractical for our expeditions.

Gill Helmsman

Designed to be worn only when helming, these winter sailing gloves were good for those long nights when not much is happening on deck. They kept out the wind and rain well. The problem with a lined glove is that when the hand is wet, they are far too difficult to get back on.

Features: Waterproof, windproof and breathable with webbing and drawcord wrist adjustment.

Verdict: One for gentle conditions.

The neoprene in these winter sailing gloves means that even when they (inevitably) get wet, they keep your hands warm. The Maxigrip surface proved particularly good when handling intricate jobs and overall we were really impressed with this glove. Tough, flexible and easy to get on and off even when wet.

Verdict: Our favourite glove of the test.

Musto Performance Winter

Neoprene on the back of the hand and at the cuff does a pretty good job of keeping a wet hand warm, and the high grip palm was effective. Of all the winter sailing gloves on test, these were the most curved by design and this helped them to have excellent grip and flexibility.

The palms were also the toughest of the test and stood up to constant rope work very well.

Verdict: The ends of the fingers weren’t the warmest once the gloves were wet.

Practical sailor throws down the gauntlet in long-term test of gloves for colder weather..

Every ball player has a favorite glove. A deck shoe that sticks to wet gelcoat is highly prized. And when time comes to hoist the main, I reach for my favorite sailing gloves. They’ll come off again if the breeze is light and day is hot, but as soon as whitecaps appear, they go back on, delivering better grip and protecting aging tendons from bruising. Some sailors prefer the dexterity of bare hands and pride themselves on their calluses. Some say they can’t work with gloves on. But when the mercury drops and fingers become stiff, we all reach for gloves. And, of course, the best time to save money on cold-weather gloves is when spring is in the air.

I often hear “I can’t work in gloves.” I once felt that way. Then I spent years working in refineries, where gloves were required to prevent chemical exposures and burns. I climbed ice in sub-zero conditions, tying knots and clipping carabiners. As a result of practice, I can do most anything in gloves, short of the finest mechanical work, by choosing the right glove and thinking about how to do the job. Although I have my favorites, I can sail a boat perfectly well in any of the gloves in this review, handling lines and clipping tethers. I might have to pull them off to work a small soft shackle or loosen a jammed knot, but that is about it.

What We Tested

This season we looked at a variety of ski, dive, sailing, and industrial gloves. Practical Sailor reviewed winter gloves in April 2002 and November 2008, and many of those products are still available. We always encourage readers to pore over the PS archives. At the same time, there far too many new products keep up with.

Instead of diving into another exhaustive market review, we decided to build on what we have done before and the experience we have gained since, breaking gloves into functional categories, and at the same time, reviewing a few old and new products that have caught our eye and work for us.

Observations .

As our multi-season test program revealed, no glove serves all purposes. The best gloves for immersion (thick neoprene) are clumsy, uncomfortable, and don’t wear particularly well. Free-finger sailing gloves aren’t warm. Insulated ski gloves (and helm-specific gloves that resemble them) are comfortable at the wheel but clumsy and slow drying.

Waterproof shells are quick drying but the shell and liner combination can be cumbersome to quickly remove. Some gloves lack gauntlets, heavily coated gloves are stiff and clumsy, and thinner gloves are less durable. And sooner or later, even that mythical waterproof, breathable, dexterous glove will get wet, so you need spares.

Most likely, you’re going want multiple pairs, both for different tasks and to ensure that a pair is always dry. We keep several pairs of waterproof work gloves on the boat year round and add several pairs of ski gloves for the winter. Somebody is bound to get cold fingers.

Waterproof Element . Gloves that use a waterproof inserts instead of a waterproof shell are not as warm because the water penetrates some of the insulation. An insert is considerably cheaper and in the case of a work glove, better protected from penetration and wear. You can usually feel an insert as a crinkly layer when you pull the glove on. Depending on how it is attached to the shell, a separate liner can also shift when you remove a damp hand, making it difficult to put the glove back on. A three-layer Gore-Tex shell or coated glove is warmer.

T hree-Season Gloves. For racers and active sailors, this is the most useful category, even in the depths of winter. But they are not really winter gloves. Featuring a 2 mm neoprene body and finger and palm facings like those on summer sailing gloves, they’re perfect for dinghy sailors in cold water areas and shoulder seasons. Advantages are good grip and outstanding dexterity. The Achilles’ heel of this class is the lack of insulation in the palm and finger facings. They are not waterproof and as soon as the palm gets wet, they are only a little warmer than heavy-duty three finger summer sailing gloves. Heat packs help.

Coated Gloves

Winter gloves.

Available both in gauntlet (Vinylove 460) and double coated (Hydroflector 1786P) styles, coated gloves are 100-percent waterproof, grip well, are inexpensive, and reasonably durable. Because they do not breath, they will get clammy within a few hours, there’s no way around it.

Thick Neoprene Gloves

Like coated gloves, your hands will get clammy. On the other hand, your hands will stay warm, no matter how wet the conditions. They are also tops for immersion, so if you carry a wetsuit or drysuit for entering the water in frigid conditions, you need a pair of these to complete the outfit, along with boots and a neoprene dive hood.

What about MOB situations or working in icy bilge water? We’ve reported on drysuits and immersion suits, but often the first thing to go is grip. A swimmer is thrown a line, but he simply can’t grasp it. Just a few minutes in icy water can paralyze your fingers.

To test warmth, we went swimming in 32F water (in a drysuit, of course). We hardly felt the cold when wearing the Neosport, Zihk, or Hydroflector gloves. Thinner, three-season gloves provided reasonable protection and much better dexterity, at least for a while. The Vinylove was icy cold as soon as the water came in the gauntlet. You will lose grip strength with any glove if your forearms get cold.

1. The Zhik Super warm is indeed warm. It had good grip and resisted wear.

2. For chilly days, sailing gloves under a Gore-Tex and leather shell can be a winning combination. Just shed the big glove when you need finger dexterity.

3. Technical editor Drew Frye’s old favorite was a Mountain Hardware Windblocker climbing glove, made of fleece and Pittards leather climbing glove

4. Henderson wetsuit gloves allowed excellent dexterity, but got wet easily and were never warm.

Three-Season Gloves

Most of these came from dinghy racing, and we learned about them while beach cat sailing youth. Depending on how warm your hands stay and how actively you sail, they may be enough.

Musto Winter Glove

Relatively warm for this category (meaning not all that warm), they had a good fit at the fingertips, promoting good line handling. A thin layer of grip material on the palm and fingers began to fail within a few days, but this proved to be superficial and the underlying layer proved quite tough. We used them hard as our main glove through the winter, and plan to use them for many more seasons.

Bottom line: Recommended for active sailors.

Gill three-season

The most popular glove out there, we found the fingers a bit tight and too long, reducing warmth. This may well be a personal fit thing and they are clearly popular. They’ve proven reasonably durable in hard use, lasting many seasons.

Gore-Tex Over Shells

The advantages of a removable shell are that you have both the thin, dexterous under glove available for trimming sheets, tying knots, and working with instruments, and a wind and waterproof outer layer for while on watch or at the helm. Climbers and mountaineers appreciate the faster drying of such a system; insulated ski gloves become progressively more sodden each day, but liners and shells can dry in a few hours.

On the other hand, the fit between the shell and liner is critical; the shell likes to pull the liner off when you remove your hand unless it is secured at the wrist. Often a single glove is simpler to deal with. The liner also tends to get wet while in use without the shell, so when you put the liner back on, the combination is still wet.

We’re constantly mixing and matching the shell/liner combinations for different sports. On the boat, the liner is often a three-finger sailing glove; you preserve superior line handling, although the insulation is less.

We’ve also worn a variety of leather-faced fleece gloves and three-season sailing gloves as liners. The main requirements of a liner is that it is secured to the hand by a wrist band so that the shell can be quickly removed. Modern liners will have a conductive material on finger tips that will work with touch screens.

Patagonia Stretch Triolet

These have been in our rotation for 25 years, climbing ice in New Hampshire and the Tetons, and covering sailing gloves in the winter. After years of use, they leak a little, but somehow the Pittards leather palm and fingers have endured.

Bottom line: No longer available, we miss this design. Fortunately there are some (pricey) substitutes.

Our testers have a weakness for sailing all year, and the Chesapeake Bay makes a reasonable testing ground. We get a good 3-4 months of wintery weather, without so much ice that boats must be pulled. This was a multi-year project. We wore them cutting wood, riding bikes, climbing ice and in some cases, industrial settings. We even took them swimming in 32F water, to see how they will work elbow-deep in frigid bilge water, diving to clear a prop, or even in an overboard situation.

1. The Winter Hawk is warm and waterproof, but the linter gets sticky when wet, making it harder to don and doff.

2. Freezer gloves are good for handling docklines, but get soaked easily and don’t block the wind.

3. The fingers on Musto gloves were stiff initially, but eventually broke in and became our winter favorites.

Arc’teryx Beta AR Gore-Tex

Similar to the Stretch Triolet, these gloves served us well for three years. Constructed from three layers of Gore-Tex with a leather palm, these are also discontinued, through we still see them on eBay.

Bottom line: Arc’teryx has sadly discontinued its shell models. The closest we could find were the MGS (below) and a fishing glove system, the Simms ProDry glove plus liner ( www.simmsfishing.com ), which we hope to review in a future report.

Outdoor Research Modular Glove System (MGS)

A soldier deployed in cold areas needs a warm glove for protection and to preserve dexterity, and must be able to quickly change to a thinner tactical combat glove, without wasting time.

Pioneered by U.S. military special forces, the glove system includes a Gore-Tex/leather shell, similar to the above-mentioned shells, which can be combined with variety of liners from summer weight to fully insulated. We’ve inspected these, but not tested them on the water. They’re ruggedly made but carry a steep price tag (about $360). Inserts run from $70 to $220.

Bottom line: Pricey and perhaps too fiddly, but Recommended for those that like to try new things. Also look at the Simms ProDry glove system.

In prior reviews, insulated ski-style gloves from Gill and other high end ski gloves have performed very well. We’ve worn all types, from high end to lesser, and so long as they are fundamentally waterproof and have a tough material on the palm and fingers, we’ve been pretty happy with them. We’d rather have multiple dry pairs of mid-level gloves than one pair upon which we stake all the marbles. Sooner or later, we take them off to do something or drop them in a puddle and they’re wet for the rest of the day.

Line handling can be a weakness. Even when the grip is first rate, they are clumsy for changing a line on a winch. We’ve worn gloves with touch screen compatible tips, but they’re too fat to really work. We get frustrated and take them off—thus the appeal of a touch-ready liner and shell system.

Bottom line: Nothing beats a pair of dry ski gloves for all-day winter comfort at the helm.

Work Gloves

There has been an explosion in mechanic’s gloves over the past 10 years. Most are focused on high dexterity or protection of hands from vibration or cuts, but insulated and waterproof versions are also available.

Majestic Waterproof Insulated

We’ve used uninsulated versions of this glove at work and around the yard for decades, and they have proven durable and dextrous, so we decided to give the waterproof winter version a try. They stayed waterproof for a season of hard use. The grip on rope is not as good as we would like, about like that of non-sticky sailing gloves. The real disappointment was that they were awkward to pull on and off once they got slightly damp; the liner stuck to the fingers, pulled out part way, and was annoying to push back in. $11.

Bottom line: We didn’t like them around the yard, even less so on the boat.

Puffy gloves are warm but you can’t do anything. I’ve used the greatest super-warm gloves ice climbing in the New Hampshire winter. Sub-zero temperatures and running water are a real test. They were warm, dry, impeccably made… and felt like boxing gloves. I could swing the ice axes fine, but tying knots and clipping carabiners was unacceptably clumsy when clinging to an axe with one hand and balancing on crampon points.

I quickly converted to leather-faced windblocker fleece gloves under the Patagonia Stretch Triolet shells described in this review. To that system I added disposable hand warmer packs on sub-zero days, which lasted 8-12 hours as long as they were kept in the oxygen-depleted environment of a Gore-Tex glove. (Note: they really do NOT work inside a knit glove or sailing glove. The glove does not retain the heat and they burn out in a few hours because of excessive oxygen availability.)

This combination provided superior dexterity and warm fingers during 10 days of climbing that were constantly below zero, and really cold in the mornings and on the summits.

Like sailing, I was constantly handling ropes, tying knots, and clipping carabiners, and with a few hundred feet of air under your feet, dexteritymatters. On warmer days (above zero) I would climb with just the liners and the heat packs. You can buy a lot of hand warmers for the price of the ultimate glove.

We’re not fond of hand warmers for jackets (one more layer provides more comfort) or shoes (they interfere with the fit and can become too hot).

For maximum warmth, hand warmers go on the palm.

Hand warmers can allow thinner gloves to work in colder temperatures so long as the glove is wind-proof.

Neoprene Gloves

Made of wetsuit material, these often claim to be waterproof, but they eventually leak. However, like a wetsuit, it doesn’t really matter, since they are still warm when they are wet. In fact, if they don’t leak they will fill with sweat anyway, since there is zero breathability. The downsides are that if the materials is thick enough to insulate, bending the fingers is difficult, and like a wetsuit, if they are tight enough control water movement, they aren’t that comfortable for long periods. And you will get pruney if you wear them day-after-day.

Neosport Glove 5mm

A bit thicker than the Zhik Superwarm (5mm vs. 3mm) the Neosports are both slightly less dexterous and warmer. We wore these gloves for a six-hour drysuit test in 32F water, where they performed admirably, so they deliver all the warmth I will ever need.

I’ve worn them on numerous freezing rain kind of days, where they are the only thing that will absolutely keep you warm. On the down side, the palms and fingers have only a few rubber dots for grip and they don’t wear well when you are handling sheets. $24.

Bottom line: Recommended for immersion in cold water, but not durable enough for much sailing.

Zihk Super Warm

The Superwarm glove is a complete wrapping of 3mm neoprene, unlike most three-season gloves, which use synthetic leather on the palm and fingers.

To this they added a layer of high-grip textured polyurethane on the palm and fingers, something like the face of a ping-pong paddle, only better. It is glued and edge-sewn with Kevlar thread to the palms and fingers, providing considerable durability. The idea was to duplicate the warmth of dive gloves with a hard-wearing palm and fingers.

The warmth is there, but dexterity is reduced. Zihk suggests wearing another glove over them for heavy duty sheet handling, but that seemed unnecessary to us—the polyurethane facing is sturdy. Sizing runs small, even for neoprene gloves; consider going up a size. $59.

Bottom Line: Recommended for frostbiting and general use in cold, wet conditions.

Practically speaking, coated gloves are pretty much the only gloves that absolutely will not leak… until you get water in the cuff. Some people like them at the helm, and for long turns in rainy weather because they won’t leak. They are also handy for handling wet dock lines and anchor rode, if you want to save wear and tear on your fancy gloves. Coated gloves wear rapidly if ropes are allowed to slide under high load; you’re better off with thick leather when actively trimming sheets.

Showa Atlas Vinylove 460

A coated vinyl work glove with a thermal lining. Several coated glove manufacturers make similar insulated versions described as snow blower gloves. They are non-stretch and the fit is sloppy, so we find them awkward for anything but handing docklines or holding the helm. They can be slow to dry, but they’re warm and absolutely waterproof. $12.

Bottom line: Recommended. Every boat should have at least one pair.

Kinco HydroFlector 1786P

A double-coated insulated work glove, these quickly became our all-time favorite winter paddling gloves, and we’ve used many. We use them on wet days when our three-season gloves got too cold.

A thin coating on the backs makes them waterproof without stiffness. A second coating on the palm provides grip and durability. Fleece insulation makes them warm even with your hand in ice water, and a snug cuff keeps the water out in most conditions. The only time water got inside was in our icy water immersion test, and it took several minutes. Like a wetsuit glove, the water warmed after a while in place.

The grip is a little too good for sail handling; lines won’t slide through your fingers. But with practice, we could sail with them even in sporty conditions, trimming and tacking swiftly. They run quite large, so order one size smaller than usual for good dexterity.

Bottom line: Recommended. If you don’t like them on the boat you’ll like them for something.

Conclusions

We’ll never have one favorite for all seasons. There are just too many variables. We like three-finger sailing gloves down to 55F; I guess we’re warm blooded and active. We like the Musto Winter glove down to 40F; it’s a true three-season glove that actually kept our fingers warm while allowing fast rope handling. In both cases, they work because we dress warmly, which keeps our hands warm.

Except for frequent screen use, the shells were kind of a bust for sailing. They worked, but we’d rather just switch between sailing gloves and warmer gloves.

The double-coated gloves were a pleasant surprise. They’re just plain luxurious for cold weather paddling.

We’ll always keep some mid-range ski gloves on the boat so we always have a dry pair and something to offer guests who miscalculated the conditions. We like coated work gloves for handling wet docklines and anchor rode; they dry fast and save wear on fancy gloves.

Our favorite will always depend on the temperature, whether it is wet or dry, and the kind of sailing we’re doing—fast or slow.

Type: Full-fingered and Fingerless Gloves?

Hi Sherry. The Gill championship gloves have no elastic in the wrists, leaving adjustment (velcro straps) up to the person alone. Your gloves are there to protect your hands, and to keep them warm if you’re sailing in cold conditions. Gloves can also get in the way, especially if you’re tying or untying knots or performing other tasks requiring manual dexterity. To protect the hands while still retaining full use of the fingers we have a choice of gloves, from full-fingered to three-fingered to short-fingered, each leaving a bit more finger ready to work. 

What you need, and the type of material and features you select, will depend on your role in the crew and what you normally do onboard. If you aren’t sure what that’s going to be, many general-purpose gloves will do just fine. Don’t worry too much about getting it wrong: hand protection is always better than no hand protection! Read through all the things we think you should consider before buying your first (or tenth) pair of sailing  gloves and then make your decision and get back to sea!

All sailing gloves are designed for sailing, obviously, but they still serve different purposes. If you sail in warm weather, you’ll be primarily interested in protecting your hands from rope burn. If you sometimes sail in cold weather, you’ll want more coverage for warmth. If you regularly tie and untie knots, you’ll want to look at gloves that leave fingertips open (3-finger or ¾ / short style). Sailing gloves come in three basic configurations.

¾ or short finger gloves cover the hand and the base of the fingers but leave all fingertips open for maximum dexterity. They are favored by warm-weather sailors and those whose main need is palm protection.

3 finger gloves leave the tips of the thumb and first fingers open but cover the other 3 fingers completely. They provide more warmth and protection while still preserving dexterity in the thumb and first finger.

Full finger gloves cover the fingers completely, delivering maximum protection and warmth but sacrificing dexterity.

Some high end gloves use “pre-curved” fingers with extra padding designed to combine protection with flexibility.

PALM MATERIALS

The palm is the most critical part of a sailing glove. Palms need to be sticky enough to give good grip on wet lines, padded enough to protect the hands from rope burns and impact, and durable enough to survive heavy friction. 

Most manufacturers use synthetic leather compounds for their palms, often in double thickness. Some also wrap the palm pad around the edge of the hand, because many sailors run lines over the edges of their hands.

MESH INSERTS

Mesh inserts are placed in low-friction areas to preserve durability while allowing ventilation. They are mainly used in products intended for warm-weather sailing.

Users are sometimes surprised to find velcro closures on the inside of the wrist on sailing gloves, while most sport gloves have them on the back or outside of the wrist. This is to keep the closure from interfering with the visibility or controls of watches or wrist-mounted GPS units, which can be critically important in racing. For the same reason, many sailing gloves have a relatively short wrist and some use a cutout on the back of the wrist to allow space for a watch.

The back is arguably the least important part of a sailing glove, but it needs to stretch easily to assure free movement. Some manufacturers use hard rubber ridges for added protection on the backs of the hands.

If your gloves don’t provide the necessary grip and keep slipping off ropes or the wheel of the boat, then they are useless. Most sailors aren’t worried about a little tan that they acquire when out on the waves, but this is where the problem comes in. This is the reason why you need to choose gloves that provide proper UV protection. ‘Heavyweight vs. welterweight’: Pros react to Jake Paul knocking out Mike Perry, calling out Alex Pereira

Jake Paul did it again.

The influencer-turned-boxer continued his crusade against MMA veterans with a sixth-round knockout of Mike Perry on Saturday at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla. Perry remains inhumanly tough and continued to march forward despite eating a ton of punishment, but ultimately Paul’s size, speed, and ringcraft was too much for BKFC’s King of Violence to overcome. Afterward, Paul called out Mike Tyson — who he’s expected to fight on November 15 in Dallas — and UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira .

While Jake Paul is the best YouTube star to ever lace up a pair of boxing gloves, his opponent on Saturday, Mike Perry, is one of the best bare knuckle boxers to ever, um, not lace up a pair of gloves. What happens when the two face off on Saturday night in their eight-round fight (that features gloves)? The odds say Paul will win, but Perry thinks his bare knuckle experience will lead him to the upset. Here’s everything you need to know about Jake Paul vs. Mike Perry, including the odds, their records and a prediction on who will win.

Originally, Paul was supposed to face Hall of Famer Mike Tyson tonight, but after Tyson recently dealt with ulcer issues, Paul tapped Perry to take his place.

It’s unclear how much of a threat Perry holds to Paul. But Perry has made quite a name for himself in combat sports. He was a decent but not great MMA fighter, but his stock rose when he began fighting for the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) promotion.

In the short time that BKFC has existed, Perry is its biggest superstar and perhaps the best fighter in that combat sports niche. How that experience will compare when he faces Paul in an actual boxing match with gloves is unclear. But the 32-year-old Perry is excited to see what happens.

“I worked so hard for this,” he told CBS Sports . “This is not just another day in the office for me. I thrive off of the pressure. I live for this. I have been getting paid millions of bucks fighting people. I have been doing this a long time so this money fight ain't nothing new to me. I need $20 million. I ain't got enough yet. I've got to check that off my box list and get my mansion and my yacht and bring my family on the boat every day.”

Apparently, Tyson is concerned with Paul’s chances of winning. If Paul were to lose, how would that affect his new date to meet Tyson in November? It certainly wouldn’t help the buildup, and even Paul admits that it could cost him the chance to get Tyson in the ring altogether.

“(Tyson) was concerned about me taking this fight,” Paul said, via USA Today . “He’s like, ‘What is Jake thinking? This guy Mike Perry is a killer.’ So, he had some concerns. But Tyson, my message to you is don’t worry. I’m going to put this guy to sleep. This is a Mike appetizer and you’re next.”

Either way, UFC analyst Dan Hardy said Paul should beware.

“It’s a recipe for disaster for Jake Paul,” Hardy told MMA Fighting . “I’m really genuinely surprised that he’s allowing Mike Perry to punch him, because Mike Perry is going to savor the opportunity . . .

“Mike Perry’s an animal. He’s an absolute barbarian, and he is made for striking sports. Anything where he doesn’t have to worry about someone trying to hold onto him and take him down and make it a slow night for him, he is perfect . . . Mike Perry is there to eat your face, and you’ve got to be prepared for that kind of intensity.”

Jake Paul vs. Mike Perry odds

Even though some in the MMA community think Perry will destroy Paul, the oddsmakers don’t share that view. Paul is the -500 betting favorite (bet $500 to win $100), while Perry is the +350 underdog (win $350 on a $100 wager. There’s some value in grabbing Paul to win by stoppage at -120, and if recent history is any indication, I wouldn’t mind taking Paul to win by KO/TKO in rounds 1-2 at +550. If you like Perry, maybe grab him to win by stoppage at +550.

After losing a close split decision to Tommy Fury last year, Paul (9-1, 6 KOs) has won three in a row in the past 11 months. And two of those victories came against professional boxers Andre August and Ryan Bourland, who had a combined 27-3-1 before facing Paul. Paul knocked out both of them in the first round makes the case that, yes, Paul should be a considered a legitimate boxer.

Perry (0-1) has almost no experience as a professional boxer who wears gloves in the ring. In his only fight, he was knocked out by Kenneth McNeil in 2015. But Perry has been successful in bare knuckle boxing, going 5-0 since February 2022. As an MMA fighter, he amassed a 14-8 record.

Jake Paul vs. Mike Perry prediction

My BKFC knowledge is minimal, so I don’t have a great feel for how dangerous Perry will be to Paul. But I know what Paul can do against a boxing neophyte—he basically destroys them. If Perry were a huge threat to Paul, I’m not sure Paul would have picked him as a Tyson replacement. So, I’ll go with Paul by stoppage in the second round.

UPDATE: Paul knocked down Perry in the first and second rounds, and he used a solid power jab and plenty of good body work to hurt him continuously throughout the rest of the fight. Though Perry was tough, he was nowhere close to Paul’s level, and in the sixth round, Paul knocked him down again after landing a number of clean shots. Perry rose before the count of 10, but he stumbled when the referee was examining him and the fight was stopped .

If you took Paul’s money line, you made a $20 profit on a $100 wager. If you grabbed him to win by stoppage, you earned $83 on a $100 bet. And if you were insightful enough to gamble on Paul to win by stoppage in the sixth round, you won $1,100.
