Yacht Club Venice, excellence and luxury in Venice

In the heart of the wonderful and superb city of Venice that the whole world envies and where the people have an almost symbiotic relationship with the sea that surrounds it, is located the Yacht Club Venezia , a name known to sportspeople and sailing enthusiasts all over the world .

Located in the historic building where once the “ Gallette ” was produced for the fleet of the Serenissima. Inside the Marina Sant’Elena, the only marina located in the historic centre of Venice , the Yacht Club Venezia was born from an idea of Mirko Sguario , who aims to bring the excellence of sailing and its significant following in the heart of the Serenissima. 

Sguario soon becomes an i mportant reference point in the organization of major events . His first event in 1993, the regatta for couples “HIM and HER”, proved to be a real triumph. It aimed to involve as many people of all ages, sailors or not, attracting both newcomers and owners, who used to use the boat only for pleasure, to the race circuit. “HIM and HER” became a success destined to grow and break every record , year after year until reaching the record number of 136 boats in the 2000 edition. 

His skills, knowledge and quality as an excellent organizer led him over the years to collect one success after another as for example the Cooking Cup . The Cup was born from an innovative concept that combined the race with the preparation of a dish in the galley onboard. And more as the Aquileone Race , the Sci-Vela , another premiere in the Veneto region that was expanded with the speciality of golf.

This is how “ Golf Vela Sciando ” was born, another success with hundreds of participants of all ages and with famous champions such as Bruno Alberti and Cristian Ghedina, who participated in the 2009 edition , also as testimonials of a humanitarian project.

Subsequently with the X-Yacht Adriatic Cup, Sguario brings t he most technological and performing boats to Venice . Experience and expertise led him to become a leading light in the racing world, so much so that in 2006 he was called to the direction of the International Boat Show in Venice to take care of the sports events.

Among the new challenges, Sguario wanted to bring vintage sails back to Venice, finding a great ally in the Consulate of the Principality of Monaco in Venice : this is how the Monaco Trophy was born, in its seventh edition in 2019 .

When Stefano Costantini inaugurated the Marina Sant’Elena in 2014, Mirko Sguario sensed the possibility of organizing a great regatta like never before seen in Venice. The Venice Hospitality Challenge was born, a race by invitation only for Maxi yachts, each one combined with a 5-star luxury Venetian hotel .

The Venice Hospitality Challenge is the only regatta in the world that takes place in an urban itinerary such as the F1 Grand Prix of Montecarlo. Every year, the Venice Hospitality Challenge sees internationally renowned boats and skippers battle to win the coveted Doge’s hat, specially made by historic Murano glassworks. 

Spectacularity is always in the first place: the race course takes place in front of “Piazza San Marco” and when the fleet arrives in “Canale della Giudecca” , which is less than 250 metres wide at its narrowest point, the public is always in suspense. Last year’s 6th edition of the Venice Hospitality Challenge saw no less than fourteen Maxi Yachts lined up on the starting line and victory went to Way of Life – The Gritti Palace , helmed by Slovenian skipper Gaspar Vincec . 

With events like this, Venice confirms itself as an extraordinary city , a world reference point that pushes to more and more complex challenges but that in the end, rewards with unforgettable emotions.

La Compagnia della Vela è un’Associazione Sportiva dilettantistica, senza fini di lucro, che ha lo scopo di promuovere e diffondere lo sport velico da regata e da diporto attraverso l’organizzazione di:

• Attività agonistica;
• Organizzazione di regate;
• Corsi Vela Optimist e RS Feva per bambini e ragazzi, livelli base, intermedio ed avanzato;
• Corsi Vela Altura per adulti sulle imbarcazioni della flotta sociale SB 20 con deriva con bulbo sollevabile;
• Corsi di vela a richiesta per aziende ed istituti scolastici anche di tipo residenziale.

Squadra agonistica

Dopo la Scuola Vela, gli allievi più appassionati allo sport della vela possono entrare a far parte della nostra squadra agonistica.

Oltre all’attività agonistica internazionale e nazionale, la CDV organizza una serie di appuntamenti annuali tra i quali si segnalano per la loro crescente notorietà e successo alcune regate e veleggiate.

La Scuola di Vela Federale ‘Paolo Giammarco’ grazie allo staff tecnico di primissimo livello organizza corsi di vela indirizzati a diverse fasce d’età.

La Scuola di Mare della Compagnia della Vela è una scuola di vela e di vita. Bambini e ragazzi condividono un’esperienza unica in mare e a terra convivendo, sotto la supervisione dei nostri istruttori, sull’isola di San Giorgio, un’oasi nel cuore di Venezia.

Lo yacht club venezia presenta il suo 2024.

“Visto il grande successo che abbiamo ottenuto lo scorso anno, abbiamo riconfermato tutti gli appuntamenti degli anni precedenti” spiega il presidente dello Yacht Club Venezia  Mirko Sguario , che prosegue:”Ad oggi siamo ancora al lavoro per un paio di progetti che potrebbero riuscire a vedere la luce nel corso del 2024. La cosa che mi rende più orgoglioso è che siamo riusciti a coinvolgere tutte le fasce di età, dai bambini fino ai nonni e devo dire che guardando in giro è davvero difficile trovare circoli che abbiano raggiunto il nostro livello in termini di organizzazione e qualità dell’evento”. 

A tenere a battesimo la nuova annata sportiva sarà la neve di Cortina d’Ampezzo, dove si terrà la prima manche della ‘ Sci Voga Trofeo Bortoli Assicurazioni ’. La combinata sarà realizzata in collaborazione con lo Yacht Club Cortina d’Ampezzo e la Remiera Castello presso la ski-area Faloria. 

La stagione dello Yacht Club Venezia proseguirà domenica 12 maggio con la seconda edizione del  Trofeo LILT , evento organizzato dallo Yacht Club Venezia e dalla Lega Italiana Lotta Tumori di Venezia che hanno voluto di estendere la collaborazione a tutti i circoli velici veneziani al fine di lanciare con più forza il messaggio che ‘ la prevenzione è vita! ’. La domenica successiva, 19 maggio, invece tutti i bambini delle scuole vela dei circoli lagunari verranno coinvolti nel parallelo ‘ Vela contro Vela ’, in entusiasmanti sfide all’interno del Marina Santelena. 

Il 1 giugno, in occasione del Salone Nautico l’epilogo della ‘ Sci Voga Trofeo Bortoli Assicurazioni ’, il rio delle Galeazze che ospiterà la gara a bordo delle Caorline decretando il vincitore di questa nuova edizione.  Sabato 29 e domenica 30 giugno l’appuntamento con l’evento che è entrato nel cuore di migliaia di veneziani e non solo: nel bacino di San Marco tornano infatti le vele d’epoca con l’undicesima edizione del ‘ Trofeo Principato di Monaco ’. 

Terminata la pausa estiva la stagione riprenderà sabato 7 e domenica 8 settembre con la ‘ IO & TE – Un uomo e una donna in vela ’. Settembre si chiuderà con la settima edizione del Trofeo del Nonno prima di lasciar spazio al gran finale – sabato 19 ottobre – con l’undicesima edizione della ‘ Venice Hospitality Challenge – Gran premio città di Venezia ’. L’evento è oramai entrato da anni all’interno del calendario dei più prestigiosi ed importanti eventi che si svolgono in città e vedrà sfidarsi eleganti maxi yacht a pochi metri dalle rive, nell’unica regata al mondo che si svolge interamente all’interno di un circuito cittadino. 

Come sempre lo Yacht Club Venezia porrà l’accento sul tema della sostenibilità ambientale rinnovando – insieme ai propri partner la sfida di realizzare gadget ecosostenibili con materiali ricavati dagli scarti in PET delle bottiglie di plastica.

After the fire: St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club focused on revitalizing this coming summer

PANAMA CITY — In November, the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club building on Bunkers Cove Road was destroyed in a fire. Ever since then, questions have circulated around the community: How did the fire start? Would the Yacht Club rebuild?

The Yacht Club was up and operational for business within weeks of the fire. The Yacht Club is still taking in new members, as well. Members have joined the club even after the fire.

”The Yacht Club is in better shape than people would have imagined,” said Michael Wynn, 2024 commodore. “The staff members that we have are family to us. We believe and give to them and they give back to us.”

Wynn explained that one club member had this to say after the fire: “The clubhouse was just a building; the Yacht Club is about the people.”

The Yacht Club has discussed expanding its sailing center to provide greater resources for the community. The club expects the plans and renderings for the new club facility will be unveiled this summer.

Some of the staff members have left the club since the incident and others have stayed.

“Our staff is smaller now since the fire,” said Wynn. “We have less services being offered at the moment, but many staffers who left the club for other jobs have offered to come back once the club becomes (fully) operational again.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown. There have been different ideas and theories on how the fire started, but there has not been a definitive answer. But there was no foul play, Wynn emphasized.

”Right now, we don’t have a final number on what it’s going to cost to rebuild,” said Wynn. “We have architects and plans on rebuilding. We have members of the community who are donating services to help cut the cost (of our rebuild).”

More information about the club will be released closer to the clubhouse reopening. Wynn said the rebuild will both honor the club's history and heritage and also add modern touches.

Wynn said the club's experience dealing with insurance after the fire has been good and the matter soon will be resolved. The experience was much better than the ones many people had after Hurricane Michael, he noted.

Wynn also is humbled and gratified by the outpouring of support and dedication from his fellow club leaders and all club members. He knew his one-year term as commodore, which began in January, would be full of challenges. But the club has rallied because the tradition and legacy mean so much.

"People care so deeply," he said.
