The sovereign 20 is a 20.0ft masthead sloop designed by helsen/sovereign design group and built in fiberglass by sovereign yachts (custom fiberglass products) between 1982 and 1996..

The Sovereign 20 is a light sailboat which is a high performer. It is stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a racing boat.

Sovereign Yachts

(Many thanks to Henry Gomez for his in-depth research into the history of the Sovereign brand. A more detailed account can be found at the link above.) Custom Fiberglass Products of Florida, founded by Robbie Bowen, built the decks, liners, and hulls for Captiva Yachts and Sovereign Yachts. (Sovereign Yachts was founded by Doug Steeg.) When Sovereign Yachts closed in 1988, CFP assumed ownership of the molds, and built a few boats on their own but continued to use the Sovereign name. As a result, one Sovereign model may have have been sold under a number of different names. Many came from a single hull mold, with a deck, interior and rig that also changed from year to year. Summary of the chronology of the Sovereign Yacht building business: **Sovereign Yacht Co. 1978-1988.** Models : 7.0; 5.0 (scaled down 7.0); 17, 18 and Antares 17. The 7.0. 23’, 24’, Anteres 24 all came from the same hull design but had different decks. **Custom Fiberglass Products of Florida. 1988-1994** They were awared the Sovereign Yacht Co. molds. Introduced the Sovereign 20 and began building the Hen boats designed by Reuben Trane in 1992. After CFPF went out of business, Terry Chapman, reportedly a salesman for CFPF, optained the rights to the molds. However it wasn’t until 1996 he started Sovereign 96 but quickly struggled and was bought out that same year by Jim MacDougald who started Sovereign Americs, Inc **Sovereign America, Inc 1996-1998** Out of business. We're buying what our neighbor says is Sovereign 20 "pocket cruiser," complete with trailer and I can find nothing about the boat or the manufacturer through web searches. Anyone have information? Thanks.Bryan  

Then you are not looking very hard. I did a google search on "Sovereign 20' sailboat" and found a bit of information. Mostly I see a good bit of information on Sovereign 23's and there are some owners reviews on this website. http://www.sailboatowners.com/sbo/boatinfo.htm?fno=499.122It sounds like a stable, trailerable boat that may not point high upwind.Good luck with this.  

info Thanks for your reply. I also found the site you included and it may be more pertinent that I initally thought. I put a tape measure to the boat and it actually measures closer to 18 ft. than 20, so that guy's boat may be the same model. About the only thing I've been only to find concerning the manufacturer are some old ads for sale on e-bay. Thanks again. If anything else develops, I'll post it on the forum, perhaps with pictures.Bryan

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Sovereign 20 is 2.41, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.5 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Sovereign 20 is about 76 kg/cm, alternatively 425 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 76 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 425 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Dangerously high levels of E. coli bacteria overshadow rowing event on the Thames

Raw sewage spills into England's rivers doubled last year. Organizers of a famous rowing race on the River Thames have installed a disinfecting station at this weekend's finish line.

Now to London, which holds a famous race on the River Thames this weekend. Thousands of spectators will line the banks to watch the annual event. But there is more to worry about than who will win, as NPR's Lauren Frayer explains.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

ANDREW COTTER: And Oxford are coming down - throwing everything out this year. It's going to be a narrow victory for Cambridge.

LAUREN FRAYER, BYLINE: The University Boat Race is the biggest rowing event on the River Thames, pitting Oxford against Cambridge.

COTTER: And again, all smiles.

ANTONY REYNOLDS: A fantastic race.

FRAYER: The tradition is for the winning team to splash into the water at the finish line. But this year, they're being urged not to because of dangerously high levels of E. coli bacteria. This is not a fluke of nature.

(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "BBC SIX O'CLOCK NEWS")

CLIVE MYRIE: Sewage spills by water companies into rivers and seas in England.

FRAYER: Government data out this week show raw sewage spills doubled here last year. Charities have cropped up across the U.K., with names like Surfers Against Sewage. Oxford's rowing coach calls pollution in the Thames - where his team is competing this weekend - a national disgrace. Environmentalists say this began back in 1989...

MARGARET THATCHER: The water privatization, I believe, will go very successfully indeed.

FRAYER: ...When then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher started privatising the U.K.'s public utilities. The country's water companies are now owned in part by the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund, a Hong Kong billionaire and U.S. investors. Over the years, they've extracted tens of billions in dividends while skimping on improvements to Victorian-era sewage pipes. And in the case of Thames Water - the country's biggest water company, serving a quarter of U.K. households - they ran the company into the ground. Its chief executive, Chris Weston, told local TV that Thames Water is now broke and has to get money from somewhere. So...

(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "SKY NEWS")

CHRIS WESTON: The plans that we have put forward, which are very much in accordance with what customers are asking us to do, require an investment of around 20 billion pounds. And that would result in a bill rise of around 40%.

FRAYER: A 40% rise in customers' bills during the country's worst cost-of-living crisis since World War II. Feargal Sharkey is a former punk rock singer, who has become one of the U.K.'s most prominent clean water activists. And he is irate, telling the BBC...

(SOUNDBITE OF RADIO SHOW, "HARDTALK")

FEARGAL SHARKEY: We have already provided all of the funding to water companies for 33 years for them to build a properly functioning sewage system. The question we should be asking is, where's our money gone? What has happened to it? And when can we get a refund?

FRAYER: The country's biggest water utility may have to be nationalized in the coming weeks.

And this weekend, instead of a victory splash after their race in the River Thames, rowers are being asked to visit a disinfecting station at the finish line.
