Learning to sail in Wales
Wales is a great place to learn to sail. Follow in the wake of Olympic sailors and learn the ropes off our coast and on our inland lakes - here's a list of great places to get you started.
Our 1680 miles of beautiful coast and lakes pooled in gorgeous hills are both good reasons to learn the ropes in Wales. Here are some wonderful places to start your sailing adventures - bring your own dinghy if you have enough experience or check out absolute beginners lessons with qualified instructors.
Olympic Gold medal winner Hannah Mills shares her thoughts on sailing in Cardiff Bay, the events that take place and the reasons she comes back to Wales to enjoy sailing.
Cardiff Sailing Centre
Cardiff Sailing Centre in Cardiff Bay caters for beginners, those with experience and everyone in between! If you’re new to sailing, you can get started with a two day Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Keelboat course, or try the RYA Dinghy level 1 course. For younger visitors, there’s also a three day youth dinghy sailing course – ideal for children aged 8 to 16.
Lisvane & Llanishen Reservoirs
Llanishen Reservoir has been brought back to its former glory with a huge restoration project fulfilled by Dwr Cymru Welsh Water. Opened in 2023, this stunning reservoir offers youth and adult sailing taster sessions with experienced qualified instructors. For those who want to expand their sailing skills, RYA Level 1, 2 and 3 sailing courses are offered throughout the year. The stunning Visitor Centre has panoramic views from the café, where there’s a delicious lunch menu to sample.

Llyn Tegid, Bala, Eryri (Snowdonia)
At a mile wide, Llyn Tegid in Bala is the largest natural lake in Wales and broad enough to pick up speed in prevailing south west winds. Four miles downwind is a lovely drift to enjoy the scenery of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park . You can take part in a number of activities, including sailing at Gwersyll yr Urdd Glan-Llyn .

Gwersyll yr Urdd Glan-Llyn
Milford haven, pembrokeshire, west wales.
Lord Nelson called it 'the finest port in Christendom'. We say the Milford Haven waterway and the Daugleddau Estuary is three sailing venues in one. Within, it provides sheltered water and 200 miles of coastline scalloped into bays and wooded creeks. At its mouth are complex wind and tidal conditions to tease experienced sailors. And in calm conditions a short sail around the corner reveals the spectacular cliffs of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path . Nearby Dale is great for beginners - it's a mile wide sheltered bay with flat waters to stretch your sea legs.
Llys-y-frân Lake
Learn to sail at Llys-y-frân in North Pembrokeshire. As a RYA accredited training centre, experienced instructors introduce the basics of learning to sail with a double hander or single hander on a five day practical course. Set in 350 acres of woodland, Llys-y-frân Lake offers a range of watesports and land activities, along with a newly opened campsite which sits alongside the modern visitor centre.

Cardigan Bay Watersports
New quay, ceredigion, mid wales.
No wonder New Quay has hosted the Cardigan Bay Regatta since 1870. Its headland hooks into Cardigan Bay, providing shelter from prevailing south west winds yet open sea within a mile – ideal conditions for beginners in simple dinghies on flat water as much as experienced sailors to hoist a spinnaker and blast over waves. Either might be joined by one of the only resident bottlenose dolphin pods in Britain. Cardigan Bay Watersports offer a range of activities, including sailing. There are sessions for beginners or more experienced sailors.

Land yachting
A great morning's land yachting, we'd definitely recommend it. We got thoroughly soaked and covered in sand but enjoyed it immensely. It's a bit like flying when the wind is on your side. Jonathan at Morfa Bay was really helpful about getting us booked in around winds and tides, and Gethin our instructor was very friendly and helpful. We'd go again (though we'd bring a change of clothes this time!)
Such a fab day! Really helpful and friendly staff. We were a party of 10 people and they made the day fun and accommodated our every needs. Would highly recommend visiting and we’re already planning our next trip. Leap of faith is a must!
Brilliant weekend with the family at Morfa Bay Adventure centre. Stayed in one of the lodges, spotlessly clean, excellent facilities and lovely, friendly and extremely accommodating staff. Great food options, our party was very well looked after. Took part in climbing, abseiling, high ropes and assault course - fabulous and encouraging instructors. Kids LOVED it! Can’t wait to come back.
I booked land yachting for my husband and I . The booking process was straight forward. It was a fun filled afternoon. Merddyn our instructor was friendly, knowledgable and joined in the activity with us. Will definately book again.
Excellent couple of hours. Great fun. 100% worth every penny! Great communication all the way through. Thanks Morfa Bay!
We stayed for four nights and explored the area. The cabins are spacious and clean with bedding and towels provided. There were also some supplies left for us in the fridge as well as tea, coffee, sugar etc. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We didn't do any of the activities but it's an attractive site and has facilities to keep children occupied.

Land Yachting on the Beach at St Andrews
On your marks… Get set and sail! Head to St. Andrews for a two-hour land yachting session. If you’ve never experienced sailing on wheels, then get ready for tons of fun as you whiz up and down the beach only a few inches from the ground. This exhilarating experience is undoubtedly something you don’t want to miss out on while you’re in St. Andrews. The key thing to master is how to stop as there are no brakes. Slow down by turning into the wind or easing the sail.
Where can I go land yachting in Scotland?
‘Blown Away’ offers a range of activities, including land yachting, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and surfing. They also cater to larger hen, stag, or corporate parties who are looking for something different to add to their bucket list. The two-hour session costs £55 per person or £45 for those under 16.
Land Yachting Guide
- Sailing a land yacht is easier than sailing a boat. There are no waves or risk of capsizing or falling overboard.
- Remember the sail is your accelerator. If your need to stop or gain control let go of your mainsail.
- Land yachting is considered a safe sport in comparison to other action sports. Always wear a helmet.
St. Andrews, home to Scotland’s first university founded in 1413, is a great place for a day out and exploring. St. Andrews is most famously known as the “Home of Golf” and even if you don’t play you can watch golfers tee off on the Old Course. With lots of cafes and pubs to meet up in after a fun day at the beach, this is a great place to try this thrilling sport! West Sands Beach was the film location for the opening scene of Hugh Hudson’s, Academy Award-winning film, ‘Chariots of Fire’.
- Master the basic skills in as little as 15-20 minutes
- Receive a full demonstration of how to sail and then get out there to practice
- Pre-booking is required and bookings are subject to change depending on the weather
- Helmets are provided but please bring gloves and protective goggles

8 Interesting Things to Do in Laugharne Wales (plus Dylan Thomas’ Boathouse)
By: Author Angela Price
Posted on Last updated: February 23, 2024
Laugharne sits in Carmarthenshire and is a great place to visit if you are wondering what to do in West Wales.
With a magnificent castle, a charming town, and countryside and estuary walks, what’s not to like about Laugharne?
Add the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas’ boathouse and some quaint tea rooms to the mix, and you get an idea of what Laugharne offers the visitor.
From the A477, heritage signs for “Dylan Thomas’ Boathouse” will lead you along beautiful country roads and into Laugharne Town. You will find plenty of free parking – yes, free – right by the castle. This is where you can start exploring Laugharne’s heritage and cultural attractions.
We spent a day in Laugharne (pronounced Larne) during our week’s holiday in Pembrokeshire and loved it. I have shared some of the best things to do in Laugharne, which will help you plan your own day trip to this historic town.

Best Attractions to See in Laugharne
Laugharne castle.
The majestic castle in Laugharne stands on the banks of the Taf Estuary on Carmarthen Bay. It overlooks some of the most beautiful Welsh scenery.
Rolling hills, water trailing out along the estuary and glistening sandbanks all make for the most picturesque view.
Originally built in the 12th century as a Norman stronghold, the castle’s position along the River Taf made it a perfect defence point.
When it fell into disrepair, it was bought by a Tudor merchant and rebuilt as a mansion complete with Elizabethan gardens.
It also had connections to Dylan Thomas, who wrote: “Portrait of an Artist” in the castle’s summerhouse. The view of the Taf Estuary was an inspiration for his creative talents.
A great place to take photographs of the castle is from the car park. If you want to go inside the castle, you can view the towers and the summerhouse from closer proximity.
The entry fee is £4 (adult), and a small gift shop sells souvenirs and ice cream.
We are not wholly bad or good, who live our lives under Milk Wood. Dylan Thomas
Heritage Circular Walk – 5.5miles (moderate)
After crossing the bridge in the car park, the Heritage Walk starts at Laugharne Castle. The walk is part of the Wales Coast Path .
It passes Dylan Thomas’ Boathouse and writing shed along the “Dylan’s Walk” pathway. It continues along the path through woods and fields above the Taf Estuary.
A steep climb starting from the farmhouse (private) brings you out by a caravan park. Take a moment to enjoy the beautiful views before continuing along a narrow lane on the left-hand side.
This takes you to St Martin’s Church – the final resting place of Dylan Thomas and his wife, Caitlin. Follow the main road back to the castle, and you have completed the Laugharne heritage circular walk.
We enjoyed this walk but found the hill by the farmhouse quite challenging. It is a gravel path, and a hedgerow on either side makes it quite humid on a warm day. Take plenty of water with you on the walk.
Dylan Thomas’s Boathouse
One of the main reasons that visitors flock to Laugharne is to view Dylan Thomas’ boathouse , his home for the last four years of his life.
The author of the famous play “ Under Milk Wood ” wrote some of his best work in this idyllic location with views as far as the Gower Peninsula.
Inside the boathouse, you can see the family’s rooms, photographs, and information on his life and works. An audiovisual presentation portrays Dylan reading some of his work.
The boathouse has tea rooms for refreshments, including popular welsh cakes.
You can also peer inside Dylan Thomas’ writing shed on the pathway above the boathouse. We discovered it was once his garage before he transformed it!
a black-magical bedlam by the sea… timeless, beautiful, barmy – there is nowhere like it anywhere at all Dylan Thomas
Dylan’s Birthday Walk
Another beautiful walk you can do, in addition to the heritage circular route, is Dylan Thomas’ Birthday Walk.
In 1944, Dylan wrote ‘Poem in October’ about his birthday walk to the top of Sir John’s Hill. The uphill walk starts at the far end of the castle car park and is 2 miles long.
Enjoy the outstanding views of the Taf estuary, Dylan’s boathouse, the Gower Peninsula, Caldey Island and Tenby.
St Martin’s Church
If you are a Dylan Thomas devotee, this is the final resting place of Dylan and his wife, Caitlin. A simple white wooden cross marks Dylan’s grave.
Take a moment to wander around the graveyard while you are there. The crumbling tombs and tilted headstones are very atmospheric.
The church is on the main street into Laugharne and is entered via a 14th-century Lychgate. The church can also be accessed at the end of the circular heritage walk.
Though lovers be lost, love shall not; And death shall have no dominion. Dylan Thomas
Laugharne High Street
Laugharne is a small town with plenty of character. A few independent shops, a deli, tea rooms and several pubs offer visitors a good choice of places to eat and shop.
Walk from St Martin’s Church back to the car park and admire the traditional houses and the town hall clock tower. Keep an eye open for the bust of Dylan Thomas in a small garden near the car park.
Public conveniences (20p charge) are near the castle entrance.
Useful Information About Laugharne
Places to stay in laugharne.
Browns – The iconic boutique hotel and restaurant dating back to 1752 was Dylan Thomas’ favourite drinking spot. He used to give out the pub’s telephone number as his own he was there so often.
The Owl and The Pussycat – If you want sandwiches, cakes, and a good cuppa, I recommend you try the food here.
The Boat House Bed and Breakfast – some rooms with castle views.
Alternative Accommodation in Laugharne
Poetry is not the most important thing in life… I’d much rather lie in a hot bath reading Agatha Christie and sucking sweets. Dylan Thomas
Relax on Pendine Sands
After a day of exploring Laugharne Town, head to Pendine Sands, a 7-mile stretch of the Pembrokeshire coastline where land-speed records have been made.
The most famous record was set in 1924 by Sir Malcolm Campbell in his car, Blue Bird.

Lovely post Angie. What a sweet place. I've long been a fan of Dylan Thomas, and was actually in a stage production of Under Milk Wood many years ago. Why is there a strike-through over Under Milk Wood?

All I am reading about Wales is moving it higher on my travel wish list! I can see why you would say that Laugharne ticks all the boxes. I would not know where to start if I only had one day to visit. The circular walk sounds lovely but at my pace it might take us awhile to capture all the views. And then we would not want to miss Dylan’s Birthday Walk for those views.
Interesting explorations and walks at Laugharne. I can see myself doing this, at a leisurely pace!
Oh how lovely! This indeed is exactly how I would like to spend a day - visiting a charming castle in the English countryside and then a small town for a delicious lunch. He said it best... a black-magical bedlam by the sea… timeless, beautiful, barmy – there is nowhere like it anywhere at all.

It is in Wales, not England, but you are right about it being a beautiful place to visit.

Land yachting
Back to Activities
What to expect
A land yacht is a usually three or four-wheeled vehicle for one or two people, with a mast and sail attached. By adjusting the sail to catch the wind, the land yacht is propelled forward, sometimes reaching up to 40mph. Because of the speed they can go and the wind they require, land yachting usually takes place at the beach or over large flat spaces, like airfields. Hopefully, it’ll be quite windy, so remember to wrap up warm with windproof layers. If you’re land yachting at the beach, you shouldn’t end up in the sea, but are best off wearing something waterproof anyway, to guard against spray and wet sand.
What you’ll learn
Low to the ground and carried along by gusty winds, a land yacht can be a thrilling piece of kit, even if it’s a bit scary to ride the first time. By steering the vehicle and adjusting the sail, you begin to build on skills you’ll need in other activities, such as go-karting and sailing. Land yachting is a great chance to try something new, as it’s an unusual combination of rather different skills and activities. It can be a good introduction to the kind of sail control required for small dinghy sailing.
The first mention of a vehicle similar to a land yacht is in China around 500AD. Since then, they’ve changed only a little in their design. You’re most likely to find land yachts racing along the beach, but there were even land yachts used to cross the great plains of America in the 1800s.
Handy hints
- Bring a camera . Don’t forget to capture the day with some pictures or videos of everyone zipping about in their land yachts.
- Layers . A warm or windproof layer is essential when driving a land yacht, especially if you’re at the blowy seaside. Even more so if some of your group have to wait, whilst others are having a go.
You must always:
- Complete a risk assessment
- Have the right ratios of number of adults to provide suitable supervision
- Set up an InTouch process
- Know what to do in an emergency
- Share information with parents and carers with an activity information form
- Get approval from your commissioner
Be safe outdoors:
- Check the weather forecast
Other activities:
- Where an activity is not covered by any other rules members must follow rule 9.1 and assess the risk , ensure that members can be kept safe and that all equipment is suitable for its use.
Joint activities with other organisations:
- This activity can be run jointly with Girlguiding .
- This activity can be run with other organisations .
This activity can be led by you or someone else in Scouts
You can go to a centre or use an activity leader who is not part of scouting:.
The provider must have public liability insurance.
Piloting a land yacht is quite a different experience to what you might get from other activities. Congratulations on giving it a go and trying something new! Land yachting is a hybrid activity that takes part of one mode of transport and combines it with another. What other examples of this can you think of? What new ones could you invent? How might helicopter football work? Do you think you could replace all cars with land yachts?
Trying something new, especially something that involves speed, takes courage. The group should celebrate everyone taking part and encourage one another to try more new adventures like this one.
Change the level of challenge
Some providers may have games for you to try, once you’re comfortable controlling the land yacht. These might include slalom or obstacle courses, or drawing in the sand with your tire tracks
Make it accessible
Land yachting can often be adapted so more people can give it a go. Many centres have facilities that cater for people with additional needs and experienced instructors to help everyone achieve their goals. Get in touch with your local provider to chat through the needs of people in your group. Make sure you give them plenty of notice.
All Scout activities should be inclusive and accessible.

Take it further.
If you enjoyed wheeling about on a land yacht, have a go at go karting or a driving experience . If you enjoyed using wind power and admiring the sea views, why not try sailing?
Youth shaped guidance
Encourage anyone that has tried land yachting before to support those feeling nervous or unsure, and to share their skills with the group. They could help to introduce and explain the activity in a meeting before the visit.
Leaders and helpers should encourage young people to speak up and talk to their provider about what they’re most excited about and how they’d like to be challenged on the day.
RYA Courses
We provide an excellent programme of RYA courses ranging from Start Yachting right through to Yachtmaster preparation. The RYA requires that the ratio of students to one instructor is a maximum of five.
Click below for details…
Start Yachting
A short introduction to sailing for complete beginners
By the end of the course you will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework and be aware of safety on board.
Holders of the Start Yachting certificate can go on to complete the Competence Crew course in a reduced time of three days or two weekends.
Competent Crew
This course is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers
Experience living on board and really get to know the boat. Virtually all the course is hands on. You are the crew – without you the sails won’t go up and the boat won’t be steered.
By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day duties on board. You should also have visited some interesting places and had an enjoyable holiday.
Day Skipper
A course for aspiring skippers with some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing skills
Learn to skipper a short passage with the instructor on hand to give advice and encouragement and ensure your safety. Experience being in charge, taking credit when it all goes well and being responsible when it doesn’t.
Before this course, if you are not sure that you sailing is up to speed, a good way to learn is on an RYA Level 2 dinghy course. This will teach you to sail around a course and control the boat’s speed. Although not something we cater for, this course is widely available all over the UK and abroad.
If it’s help with navigation that you need, you should take our Day Skipper Combo course which combines both the practical and theory elements.
There are many charter companies that will allow you to charter a yacht after successfully completing this course, making it the gateway to your ambition of being in sole charge of a boat.
Coastal Skipper
Advanced skippering techniques for yachtsmen and women with considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation, wanting to undertake coastal passages by day and night
Like the Day Skipper course, this course consists of skippered passages in a variety of situations. Each trainee will skipper more challenging passages and learn more about passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations.
It is a satisfying but intensive week, with candidates often working towards a Certificate of Competence (the Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore exam).
If haven’t already completed the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased course beforehand then you can opt for our Coastal Skipper Combo course with combines both theory and practical elements.
Coastal Skippers should be able to undertake more difficult passages by day and night and handle the yacht in more demanding conditions. By the end of the course you should have the knowledge, if not the experience, to become a Yachtmaster.
Yachtmaster Preparation
An RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence is often the ultimate aim of aspiring skippers. It is a well known, highly respected qualification worldwide, proving your experience and competence as a skipper.
Unlike other courses in the cruising programme, there is no formal training to complete in order to become a Yachtmaster. Instead, provided that you have sufficient experience and seatime, you can put yourself forward for an exam to test your skills and knowledge. However, attending this preparation course will greatly increase your chances of passing the exam. During the week your skills will be assessed and any areas that need improvement identified.
The exam will include an assessment of your skippering skills, boat handling, general seamanship, navigation, safety awareness and knowledge of the IRPCS (collision regulations), meteorology and signals. Candidates will be set tasks to demonstrate their ability and may also be asked questions on any part of the syllabus for all practical and shorebased courses up to Yachtmaster Coastal level.
There are two levels of assessment available – Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore. There’s no difference in the content, just the required level of ability and previous experience.
You will have to book an Examiner at a convenient time and date to complete your assessment after the preparation course.
Please note: Before taking the exam you will already have to have completed the required mileage (see below), hold a VHF certificate, and have a valid first aid certificate of an acceptable type. This is an advanced level and if you have any questions then please get in contact, we would be glad to hear from you.
Yachtmaster Ocean Qualifying Passage
- 600M including at least 200M more than 50 miles from land or charted objects capable of being used for navigation.
- Duration of at least 96 hours.
- The candidate must have taken a full part in the planning and preparation of the passage, including: navigational plan, checking the material condition of the yacht and her equipment; storing with spare gear, fuel, water and victuals.
- Throughout the passage, the candidate must have acted in a responsible capacity, either in sole charge of a watch or as skipper.
- Candidates must have successfully navigated a yacht at sea by astro navigation. As a minimum this should include the planning, reduction, and plotting of a sun-run-meridian altitude or sun-run-sun sight and a compass check carried out using the bearing of the sun, moon, a star or planet.
With fair winds sailing from Caernarfon to La Coruña via 6° – 7° longitude is approximately 600M. At 6kn this may take as little as 100 hours. But experience of 10 crossings has taught this skipper that in less than ideal conditions allow 200 hours.
It is intended to make this voyage in August but in view of the essential requirement for an acceptable weather window an exact departure date is not advisable at this time.
Aspiring OYM candidates wishing to complete and log this passage submit a C.V. and expression of interest to this RYA Recognised Training Centre.
